The effect of small copper additions on the mar-tensitic transformation behavior in Au-47.5 at. pct Cd was studied by measuring electrical resistivity as a function of temperature. The transformation behavior was found to change and transformation start (M,) temperatures for both the ß to ß' and ß to ß' transformations were depressed substantially by the addition of small amounts of copper. Both M, temperatures were lowered approximately 70°C per at. pct Cu. Copper also had the effect of narrowing the transformation hysteresis region (resistivity us temperature), and for the alloy Au-47.5 Cd-1.5 Cu there was little or no hysteresis; in this alloy, the reverse transfmmation upon heating apparently occurs below the thermodynamic equilibrium temperature, To. THE ß phase in the Au-Cd system occurs at the electron/atom ratio 3/2, and is similar to other ß phases in alloys based on copper, silver, or gold. It is of the CsCl type, in which a considerable degree of long-range order persists to the melting temperature.' The phase boundaries of the ß phase are not known precisely below 300° C, but at room tem- perature the phase exists from approximately 46 to 52* at. pct Cd.2 At low temperatures, the ß phase transforms in a diffusionless (martensitic) manner. Alloys having a composition near 47.5 pct Cd transform upon slow cooling to an orthorhombic3 phase, ß', at - 60°C. Alloys having a composition near 49.0 pct Cd, transform at - 30°C into a phase, ß", which has been recently identified as trigonal.4 Alloys having compositions near 48.5 pct Cd will transform into both the 0' and 0" phases over a range of temperatures. The Gaudin-Meloyl equation for the size distribution of fragments resulting from single fracture is where y is the mass fraction of material smaller than size x, and x, and r are parameters to be determined from the experimental data. In physical terms, r is associated with the number of active flaws in a particle of characteristic dimension xo . The special attribute of this equation is its emphasis on the coarse size region of a distribution. There are various procedures2-5 for obtaining the parameters in Eq. 1, but a simple graphical method is awaited. This situation contrasts sharply with that in the cases of the familiar Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann and Rosin-Rammler equations.6 The purpose of this note is to present a method based on a procedure7 which has been successful in several other applications.8-13

A methoD of calculating productivity factors for oil, gas, and water systems in the steady state is presented as an illustration of the quantitative application of the fundamental data on the flow properties of heterogeneous fluid systems. While the numerical results of the calculations cannot be applied directly to field conditions, because they are based on permea-bility data for unconsolidated sands and involve specific assumptions regarding the nature of the reservoir fluids, the methods of analysis and interpretation should havc significance in considering certain specific field situations when the necessary field and laboratory data become available. Moreover, it is felt that even under the idealized conditions to which the numerical calculations refer they should serve to give at least the orders of magnitude of the effects of gas-oil ratio and connate water on observed productivity factors. Within the indicated limitations, the computations imply that the foregoing factors can explain only a part of the apparent discrepancy between the homogeneous fluid productivity factors and those obtained recently in field measurements on the West Coast. It has, of course, already led to a, much clearer general understanding of the mechanics of oil production. However, examples of the quantitative application of the results of such laboratory studies are few in the literature. part of the explanation for this fact lies undoubtedly in the lack of sufficient laboratory data relating to practical fluids and sand systems such as would occur ill actual oil reservoirs. However, unless it can be shown that if such data were obtained quantitative applications could be made, serious doubt may be cast upon the desirability of carrying on further extensive experimental research work on fluid flow. The purpose of this paper is to present one approach to the problem of quantitative application of laboratory data to practical field problems. Because the published results on the basic experiments with three-phase fluid systems in porous media are limited entirely to uncon-solidated sands, the numerical applications made here will not pertain directly to any actual field situation. However, they should serve to illustrate what could be done with fundamental laboratory data if they were extended to cover the field of consolidated sands. From this point of view, it is hoped it will serve to encourage further laboratory research on this problem. The particular application to be treated here relates to the calculation of the productivity factors for oil-gas-water systems in the steady state. The effects of hydrogen and vacuum shtering treatments on the physical and mechanical properties of arc plasma-sprayed tungsten were inuestigated. Temperatures examined ranged from 3000" to 4000°F in vacuum and 2000" to 3000°F in hydrogen for both single and duplex sintering cycles. Densities of 92 pct of theoretical density were obtained when a long-time hydrogen treatment at 2000°Fpreceded sintering in vacuum at 4000°F for 4 hr. This cycle also produced the highest ualues for modulus of rupture and bend angle. The results of this investigation point out the desirability of using a low-temperature long-time hydrogen treatment prior to a high-temperature vacuum sinter for arc plasma-sprayed tungsten. ADVANCES in the development of arc plasma-generating equipment have provided a high-temperature heat source that makes the fabrication of tungsten shapes possible by a metallizing process. Tungsten in the as-sprayed condition is very brittle. It has a density between 80 and 85 pct of theoretical density, a lamellar structure with elongated pores, and a high interstitial impurity content. To improve these properties, sintering treatments can be applied to the as-sprayed material, similar to those used for the densification of compacted tungsten powder. However, in view of the differences in the density and microstructure of as-sprayed tungsten as compared with compacted tungsten, responses to sintering were expected to be different. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The tungsten powder used in this investigation had a particle size varying from 3 to 13 p with an average diameter of 8p. The impurity level was less than 0.1 pct. The arc plasma spraying was done with an F-40 Thermal Dynamics Corp. plasma jet. Spraying was performed in air and thus required cooling of the substrate by an air blast in order to minimize oxidation. The spraying parameters employed in the fabrication of all specimens are listed below: Power input, kw 12 Arc-gas flow, cfh 95N2 + 5H2 Powder feed rate, g per min 33 Powder carrier gas flow, cfh ION, Spray distance, in. 3 Traverse rate, in. per min 30 Mandrel speed, rpm 100 Nozzle orifice, in. 7/32 These values of the spraying parameters correspond to optimum conditions ascertained in a previous study. Sintering was conducted at 3000°, 3500, and 4000°F in vacuum (< 0.1 Hg), and at 2000 and 3000°F in hydrogen. Duplex sintering treatments investigated are listed in Table I together with the designations that will be used for reference throughout this paper. The samples were fabricated by spraying onto a copper mandrel which was removed prior to sintering. The specimens used for the sintering analyses had the shape of small hollow truncated cones 1 in. high with an inside diameter varying from 0.500 to 0.125 in. and a wall thickness of 1/8 in. Specimens for bend testing were taken from hollow hexagonal prisms 1-1/2 in. high with a 1-in. diam across the flats and a wall thickness of 1/8 in. The bend-test specimens were ground to the dimensions 0.085 by 0.350 by 1-1/2 in. Prior to bend testing 0.0025 in. of stock was removed from each surface by electro-polishing. Density measurements were made by the water-displacement method. In addition, a porosimeter was used to determine the amount of interconnected porosity for representative samples. Strength and ductility were determined from recorded values in transverse bending using a cross head speed of 0.020 in. per min. The load was applied at the midpoint of a 1-in. span. The deflection data reported herein refer only to the plastic portion of the total deflection. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The as-sprayed samples had a density corresponding to 83 pct (l pct) of the theoretical density of tungsten. Fig. 1 shows a representative as-sprayed tungsten structure.

RESOLUTION ADOPTED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AT ITS MEETING ON APRIL 17, 1936 Recognizing the fact that the problems of the committee named by the Board to prepare the " official ticket" for officers and Directors of the Institute are various and difficult; and desiring to assist this committee by setting forth some of the principles that should guide the committee and some of the qualifications that should be required of candidates, the following instructions are formulated and the Secretary is directed to publish them in MINING AND METALLURGY concurrently with the publication of the names of each newly appointed Nominating Committee and to send a copy to each member of the Committee. NOMINATIONS TO BE MADE Each year the Nominating Committee is to select "official" candidates for eight places, as follows: (1) President and Director (2) Vice-President and Director (3) Vice-President and Director (4) Director (5) Director (6) Director (7) Director (8) Director GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION The Bylaws provide that "the Nominating Committee shall, so far as practicable, distribute representation on the Board geographically." Pursuant to this provision, the United States, Canada and Mexico have been divided into fifteen districts, as shown on the official map.* Districts 1, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12,13,14, and 15 are assigned one Directorship each; District 2, three Directorships; District 3, eight Directorships; District 4, two Directorships; and Districts 7, 8, and 9, two Directorships between them. It will be the duty of the Nominating Committee to make selections that will give effect to this allocation of Directorships. There is nothing to prevent a Director being named to succeed himself. Attention is called to the: fact that many Institute members now resident in New York formerly lived in the West, South, or North and still have intimate business connections that compel them to visit various parts of the country periodically. Such men are particularly valuable as Directors and their nomination and election tends to minimize the objection that a large number of Directors reside in New York.

p-n junctions to detect and measure the energy of single quanta of electromagnetic radiation are described. Useful energy range is from 1 kev to several Meu. Achieved energy resolution varies from 30 pct at 6 keu to 0.12 pct at 2 Mev. Parameters affecting the perfornzance of the present detectors and desired of a new material are discussed. DURING the last 6 years semiconductor detectors have been used extensively to detect and to measure the energy of charged particles. These detectors are made from reverse-biased p-n junctions. Electron-hole pairs are created in the depletion region of the junction, Fig. 1. The carriers are separated by the electric field and give rise to a pulse of current in the external circuit. This current pulse is proportional to the number of carriers and hence to the energy deposited in the depletion region by the ionizing event. More recently the discovery of the lithium drift process, first in silicon&apos; and then in germanium,2 has extended the use of semiconductor detectors to the detection and the energy measurement of single quanta of electromagnetic radiation. These detectors now have a useful measurement range extending from the soft X-ray region, about 6 kev, to the hard y ray region of several Mev. Surface-contoured avalanche diodes can be used to extend this range down to 1 kev. There is however a desire for other materials suited to higher operating temperatures, and particularly for those materials with high y ray stopping power. The most important advantage of the semiconductor detector over gaseous and scintillation detectors is the average energy, E, required to form an electron-hole pair. Fig. 2 shows the quantum efficiency for germanium as a function of photon energy.3 At the band-gap energy, 0.7 ev, an electron-hole pair is generated by the absorption of the photon and the quantum efficiency is unity. The quantum efficiency remains constant at unity between 0.7 and 3 ev. It then increases as additional electron-hole pairs are formed by secondary ionization of the initial photoelectron. The rate of increase is about 1 electron-hole pair per 3 ev (actually 2.9 ev for germanium and 3.6 ev for silicon). This figure is constant irrespective of the particle type (electron, proton, a particle, heavy ion) and energy. In an ionizing event an incident particle of energy E will create N = E/e ion pairs. PREVIOUS investigations on the effect of stress changes on the high-temperature creep and fracture behavior of metals have been confined mainly to the testing of complex alloys.172 Most of these alloys are structurally unstable during creep because of such effects as recrystallization, overaging, and so forth, so that the results are of limited application. The only pure metals on which observations have been made appear to be lead3,4 and aluminum5 tested under conditions which allow rapid recovery to take place. The present work describes the effect of a single stress change on the creep and fracture properties of a metal in which recovery is very slow. A Ni 0.1 at. pct Pd alloy was used so that grain growth and recrystallization did not occur during creep testing. Specimens of this material were heat-treated to give a uniform grain size of 10 grains per mm. Creep tests were carried out at 500°C using Denison T.47 machines; details of the creep-testing procedure have been given elsewhere.&apos; All specimens were tested at a constant initial stress of 5 tpsi which gives, in an uninterrupted test, a minimum creep rate of ~10-3 pct per rnin and a life of -7000 min. Specimens were loaded under these standard conditions and after 1500 min, when secondary creep was well-established, the stress was changed to either 8, 7, 6, 4, 2, or 0 tpsi for a period of 180 min. After this time the original load was reapplied and the tests continued to fracture. The results are shown in Fig. 1. No detectable creep occurred during the period of reduced load, even at 4 tpsi, and on reverting to 5 tpsi the creep rate returned to its original value immediately. Increasing the stress to 8, 7, or 6 tpsi resulted in an instantaneous extension followed by a period of transient creep leading to a new steady creep rate. On returning from these higher stresses, the resulting creep rate at 5 tpsi was very low compared with the original value. Furthermore, the higher the stress during the stress change, the lower was the final creep rate. It is significant that the rupture life is comparatively unaffected by any of these stress changes.

INTRODUCTION In this paper we present preliminary results of a research program in site characterization methodology. We are interested in under- standing the response of discontinuous rock to mechanical, hydrologic, and thermal loadings. To carry out such a study we selected a field site with simple geology, uniform distribution of lithologies, and easily verifiable boundary conditions on temperature, fluid flow and stresses. The spatial distribution of fractures at the site was established and tests were conducted to determine the temperature field, hydrology, rock-mass properties, and in situ stresses. As part of the study selected borehole instruments were compared to assess their performance and reliability. SITE GEOLOGY The study area is in the eastern part of South Table Mountain, a mesa near Golden, Colo. The exposed cap rock is a single lava flow of uniform thickness (6-7 m) that rests on the clastic sediments of the Denver Formation (Van Horn, 1976). The surface of the cap rock (N. 75º E., 3º S.) is topographically featureless and slopes south- southeast; drainage is predominantly downdip and punctuated by occasional contact springs. The age of the lava flow is 64-65 m.y., or early Paleocene. Paleo- botanic evidence confirms the upper part of the Denver Formation as Paleocene (Van Horn, 1976). "Rapid-rock" analyses of core samples from the lava flow at three depths (0.2, 3.3, and 5.8 m) suggest a uniform chemical composition throughout with an increase in the Fe2O3/ FeO ratio (1.05 to 1.60) with increasing depth, reflecting the existence of a perched water table in the lava flow, To identify the rock

Some of the physical, chemical, and electrical processes for conversion of saline water to potable or industrial water are economically surveyed from an engineering viewpoint. Since all these processes require energy for drive and equipment for containment, the correlative economic factors are developed which indicate directive influences in the choice of particular regional processes. The supply of natural waters and its distance also affect decision. Any one process will probably not prove dominant in the field because auxiliary considerations such as the saline water source; types and continuing availability of fuel; electric power use or recovery; area economic status and advancement; and the political pressures of population, group demands, and land use tend equivocally to obscure capital and operation cost decisions. Basic engineering considerations, data, and economic factors are presented to assist in the direction of these decisions. An exploding world population, increasing industrialization, advancing standards of living, and the desire of less-privileged nations for betterment focus attention sharply on a major problem: water. *19 Up to now, in retrospect, people have had it relatively easy in the handling of this problem. All the better dams in the most advantageous sites, the better aquifers, the shortest aqueducts have been built. In another phase of the problem, concern is evident that wastes cannot indefinitely be disposed of merely by keeping them dilute and discharging them promiscuously. 7-9 And, perhaps, as past civilizations have done,l5 water, watersheds, streams, and irrigation may have been mismanaged or, at the least, not adequately studied.3,5,36,37 In this last is perhaps the core of the problem. As Gross states, "Ignorance and too often, indifference are contributing factors. Archaeology and theology both furnish ample testimony to the existence of rich lands where deserts now stand; it was man who ravaged his land. Unless education is a companion to water development, development might as well be forgotten. But without water, there is no beginning."13 The U.S. is showing increasing concern about its water for predictions are that by 1980 the daily withdrawals will be 494 billion gal, a figure nearly equal to the dependable supply.Is This is based on a conservative projected population of 230 million. The major categories of withdrawals are: To make available this per capita average of 2150 gal per day will require an expenditure of $219 billion over the next 20 years. The U.S. is not alone in this concern. The United Nations shows as arid zones of the world: all of Africa north of the equator and south of the 20&apos;s parallel; all of the Arabian peninsula; all of the middle east and Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, northern and central India; a great band about 1000 miles wide along the 40&apos;~ parallel from the Caspian Sea east across Russia through China to the Pacific Ocean; all of Australia except the coastal plain; the Caribbean Islands; the western nations of South America; and the western third of the United States and of Mexico. With one quarter of the earth&apos;s 57,500,000 sq miles of land thus suffering from lack of good water, increasing attention goes to the treatment of brackish and sea waters. The U.S. has been a leader in this field4,12, 16123,24 through its Office of Saline Water in the Dept. of Interior because even now some of its cities and regions are short of potable water. 11j&apos;7,M Industrial water is also of vital concern as a result of ever higher industrialization1,14122 Other nations, among them JaPan, Israel,13188 Germany, Union of South Africa, Australia, Netherlands, France, Yugoslavia, Russia, and groups such as the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC)&apos; are also diligent. The objective is low cost water, which means that both technology and economics have prominent roles in saline water conversion processes. air-lift and equipped with tapered tubing of proper design, we would have a gas input consumption of about 2500 cu. ft. per bbl., which at 3 to 4c. per 1000 cu. ft. would be 7 1/2 to l0c, per bbl., and there would be very infrequent loss of production due to stoppages. It has been demonstrated that with efficient design of air-gas lift, the production of wells can be increased much beyond that obtained with the former type of air-lift employed; also that small wells can be operated by air-lift with tapered tubing at a cost that places this method in competition with beam pumps in many fields. The next step in conservation that the writer expects to have an opportunity to demonstrate is that of restoring the pressure in a pool and producing by air-gas lift all of the oil possible to lift economically. This combined operation is probably the method toward which we shall eventually be working in recovering the maximum quantity of oil from pools where the oil is recovered through bore holes. General Discussion on the Air-gas Lift H. P. Porter, Tulsa, 0kla.—The papers presented at this meeting contain a great amount of valuable information. Wonderful progress has been shown in the development of air and gas-lifts. There has been nearly everything brought out that touches upon the subject. The real point that is lacking is exact knowledge of the velocity with in the flow column which will produce the best effect—that is the thing we must know more about. Velocity in Gas-lift Flow In other lines of industry the matter of velocity of fluids in pipe lines has been well analyzed and there are known laws by which to calculate velocity of flow; for instance, in irrigation work large pumps are designed with intake pipos to employ an intake velocity of 4 ft. per scc. By reduced cross-sect&apos;ion the velocity is increased rapidly as it enters the pump and the discharge rate is at 12 ft. per src., which in turn is reduced in the discharge column to 4 ft. per sec. Crushed coal, grain and granular material is found to be best conveyed by air when a pneumatic conveyor is employed at 100 ft. per sec. As in the design of a pumping plant or a pneumatic conveyor, the velocity at the lower end of the column in the flowing well must be controlled within certain limits for best results. Mr. Griswold, I believe, stated that they had velocity as low as 15 it. per scc. and from that up to 78 ft. per sec. Mr. Pierce and Mr. Lewis showed an ideal flow column showing how the velocity increased as the fluid was carried up the column, hut did not give any figures as to the velocity. It would be well to take that sort of a diagram to establish an ideal velocity at the lower or intake end, and then calculate the velocity from expansion of the gas as it goes up. It may be that the, ideal intake velocity would vary, depending on the depth of the well, the quantity of liquid to be handled or the pressure which it may be desired to hold. The subject is one that might be worth much research.

The Carlin gold deposit is located in northeastern Nevada about thirty-five miles by road from the town of Elko. Following the staking of six square miles &apos;of ground, a drilling program outlined a fine ore body mineable by open pitting. The resulting mine turned out to be the largest open-pit gold operation in the world, until the Rosario Pueblo Viejo operation was started in 1975. Because of the high profitability forecast at the then $35 gold price, construction of a 2000 stpd mill was commenced on a crash program and was completed for Newmont Mining Corporation by Bechtel Corporation in ten months. Production was started in early 1965. The gold mineralization occurs in marine-type sediments, chiefly silt- stones and limey shales, and the ore characteristics make for a difficult materials-handling problem. At 5% to 6% moisture the ore is dusty during crushing, but even a light rain or snowfall virtually turns the material into a slurry. Crushing this sticky ore below 314 in. (19 mm) in the dry season and 1 in. (25.4 m) during the winter is extremely difficult and leads to problems with conveyors, chutes, and fine ore storage. The initial flowsheet for Carlin&apos;s crushing plant used a 5 ft by 22 ft (1.52 m by 6. 7 m) vibrating feeder -grizzly under the 60 -ton dump pocket for feeding the 42 in. by 48 in. (1067 mm by 1220 mm) single toggle jaw crusher and a 5 ½ ft (1.52 m) standard cone crusher in closed circuit with a 6 ft by 12 ft (1.83 m by 3.66 m) vibrating double - deck screen. Because continual packing of fines in the vibrating feeder pan would cause frequent plant shut-downs to remove the fines with jack hammers, the decision was made to replace the vibrating unit with an apron feeder and stationary grizzly ahead of the jaw crusher. A dribble belt was also installed under the apron feeder. This installation has greatly improved the feeding of the pit run ore to the .primary jaw crusher. Mining at Carlin is done by a 5 yd shovel and 7 ½ and 10 yd front-end loaders, and ore transport is by several sizes of trucks from 30 to 75 tons capacity. These pit haulage trucks dump onto stockpiles adjacent to the primary crusher. Ore is then fed to the dump hopper by front- end loaders only when the crushing plant is operating. This extra handling procedure is necessary because plant delays caused by problems with wet ore in the secondary crusher resulted in the ore setting up or packing in the dump pocket. However, as the work done in the ball mill is not by kilo-watthours per se or balls per se but by kilowatthour-balls, it is possible that the kilowatthourballs in the mill before the ll-ton addition had a different amperage, voltage or robustage than those in the mill after the addition and that the overall outcome was that equal work was done before and after the addition. The authors can keep the efficiency that they got with the 45 pct volume 1-in. ball charge and get additional capacity by putting more kilowatthourballs to work in the form of the addition of 11 tons of 2-in. balls to the present ball charge, and subsequent makeup additions by weight of 20 pct 2-in. balls and 80 pct 1-in. balls. The Ce-H system was investigated in the temperature range, 573° to 1023°K, and the pressure range, 10-3 to 630 Torr, as a function of &apos;composition up to 72 at. pct H. Families of isothermal arid isopleth curves were plotted from the pressure-terr~perature-composition relationships. From these curves the solubility relationships were determined for the system. The isopleths are analytically represented by equilibrium dissociation pressure equations. The relative partial molal enthalpzes and entropies of solution of hydvogen in the systerrz were calculated fronz the dissociation pressure equulions and are tabulated. The integral free energies, enthalpies, and entropies of mixing in the Ce-H system were determined from the relative partial quantities and are also tabulated. The standard free energy, enthelpy, and entvopy of reaction of the dihydride phase at kcal per kcal per mole H2, and ?S° = -34. 1 cal per deg mole H2, respectively. The equilibrium dissociation pressure equation in the two-phase region is: UNTIL recently very little was known of the detailed solubility and thermodynamic relationships of the Ce-H system. Two previous investigations1,2 are noteworthy. However, significant discrepancies and omissions exist on analyzing them. The work of Mulford and Holley1 on cerium did not clearly delineate the boundaries of the two-phase region, Cess - CeH2-x. The plateau partial pressures were not thoroughly defined and were considerably displaced in pressure compared to those from the work of Warf and Korst.2 These latter authors concentrated their studies primarily from 823° to 1023°K in the pressure range of 1 to 760 Torr. No data were determined to outline the regions of primary solid solubility and the hydride phase. Also the establishment of the plateau partial pressures was rather limited in scope. In neither work was a treatment conducted of the relative partial molal enthalpies and entropies of solution of hydrogen in the single-phase regions and the integral thermodynamic quantities of mixing throughout the system. Therefore, it was the objective of this research to determine the complete equilibrium solubility relationships and thermodynamic data for the system by pressure-temperature-composition studies. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The cerium metal for this study was donated by the Reno Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines. Total impurity content was 0.13 pct with only 60 ppm O. The metal was checked metallographically and contained only minor amounts of second phase compared to cerium from other sources. Specimen preparation was done in a dry box flushed with argon gas. The surface of a small rectangular piece of cerium (about 0.2 g) was filed with a clean, mill file. Final weighing was done in a tared enclosed vial containing argon gas. The specimen was then loaded quickly into the reaction chamber which was purged several times with high-purity hydrogen gas and then allowed to pump to about 10-6 Torr. The furnace was heated to the reaction temperature and the run started. The equipment used to conduct the hydriding was a Sievert&apos;s-type apparatus. Basically it consisted of a source for pure hydrogen, a precision gas-measuring burette, a heated reaction chamber, a McLeod gage, and a mercury manometer. Pure hydrogen was supplied by the thermal decomposition of uranium hydride. The 100-ml precision gas burette was graduated to 0.1-ml divisions and was used to measure the quantity of gas and admit it to the chamber. The reaction chamber was a quartz tube. Prior to each run, the cerium specimen was wrapped in a tungsten foil capsule to prevent reaction of the cerium with the quartz. Control of the temperature was achieved within ±1°K. Pressures in the manometer range were measured to ±0.5 Torr and in the McLeod range (10-3 to 5 Torr) to ±3 pct. The compositions of hydrogen in cerium were calculated in terms of hydrogen to cerium atomic ratio. These compositions were estimated to be ±0.01 H/Ce ratio. The technique used to study the equilibrium pressure-temperature-composition relationships of the Ce-H system was to develop experimentally a family of isothermal curves of composition vs pressure. The range of pressure through which each isotherm was developed was from 10-9 to about 630 Torr in the temperature interval, 573° to 1023°K. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The hydriding characteristics of cerium are iso-morphous with those of the elements of the light-rare-earth group (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, and neodymium) wherein the region from the dihydride to trihydride is continuously single phase.&apos; The structure of this phase is fcc.3 The heavy rare earths form a trihydride,2 which is hcp, separated by a two-phase region from the fcc dihydride phase. The Ce-H system is represented by the family of experimental isotherms in Fig. 1. Due to the small scale required to draw the curves, the experimental points are omitted; however, a total of 240 experimental data points were taken to prepare these curves. The solubility relationships can be deduced therefrom. Three distinct regions of partial pressure and composition can be seen. Xanthates have been used as collectors of sulfide minerals in the concentration of ores by flotation for over a decade, yet much remains to be done to elucidate the underlying reasons for the remarkable effectiveness of these compounds in this connection. Briefly stated, the known facts concerning the effect of these reagents on the floatability of minerals are as follows: 1. Xanthates are without effect on silicates, silica, and generally on minerals currently regarded as "gangues." 2. Xanthates in very small amount increase enormously the floatability of sulfides of copper, lead, silver, iron and mercury. 3. If zinc sulfides are first &apos;(activated," as by treatment with a copper salt, they are readily floated by xanthates; otherwise not. 4. Elemental copper, silver and gold have their floatabilities increased by xanthates. 5. Sulfides of elements that are not typically metallic—e.g., stibnite, realgar, molybdenit—are not made to float markedly better by treatment with xanthates. 6. Oxidized minerals of lead and copper are floated if treated with large amounts of xanthates, but not so if treated with amounts of the same order of magnitude as required for sulfide flotation. Oxidized zinc minerals are not floated unless xanthates having unusually long hydrocarbon chains (e.g., eight carbon atoms or more) are used. Iron oxides and carbonate are not floated by xanthates. From a flotation standpoint the most striking feature about xanthates is the very small amount required to accomplish startling changes in the behavior of some minerals. The amounts used in practice to effect excellent concentration are frequently of the order of 0.05 lb, of agent per ton of ore; that is, of the order of one part of agent per forty thousand parts of ore. Changes in amount of agent of the order of 0.01 lb. per ton of ore (or 0.002 lb. per ton of pulp, on a 4:l basis) have marked effects on the metallurgical results obtained. Yet these changes represent a variation of but one part per million parts of pulp.

IN addition to the usual methods of manufacturing steel, a number of special processes have been the subject of considerable experimentation-and use in manufacturing practice. A number of these methods have been of a type in which a rapid refining action has been secured through the intimate mixture of fluid slag with fluid metal. The persistence with which more rapid methods are sought is indicated by the current interest in the Aston&apos; method for producing wrought iron and in the Perrin2 process for dephosphorizing and deoxidizing steel. In the Perrin process, in particular, the mixing action is extremely vigorous and the reactions proceed with surprising speed.

In this paper the effect of natural ventilation pressures is considered a part of the mine resistance and it is shown that their effect on the mine resistance is not the same as the total natural ventilation pressure of the shafts if the mine has several levels. It is shown that increasing the fan pressure causes the division of the air to approach the condition that would obtain if there were no natural ventilation pressure present. It is shown that if an appreciable difference in pressure is maintained between the beginning and end of a group of splits, the value of the integrated effect of the natural ventilation pressures on the individual splits does not change substantially with moderate changes of this pressure. A method is outlined for determining the resistance factor of the mine and the value of the effect of natural ventilation with the fan operating; also a method for determining this factor when circulation is caused by natural ventilation alone. Natural Ventilation Pressure Natural ventilation pressure (N.V.P.) is caused by the difference in weight of the air in two similar columns between two horizontal planes, and the difference in weight is caused principally by the difference in temperature of the two columns. The fan pressure causes some variation in density, but, since it is usually small and affects both columns, its effect is relatively unimportant. It has been suggested that "N.V.P." be called "stack effect"; but, since the term N.V.P. was used in a previous Institute paper,&apos; applied in exactly the same manner, the term will be used. Frictional Resistance The frictional resistance to flow in a mine without natural ventilation may be expressed as RQ2 where R is a constant for a given air density and Q is the rate of flow. This frictional resistance plus the effect of velocity changes will be called the F pressure (F.P.) and a curve of F.P. against Q, the F characteristic of the mine. If a pressure is applied to a mine by a fan, the air flow so adjusts itself that the drop in pressure through any path from entrance to exit of mine, due to frictional resistances and velocity changes, is the same as that in any other path. The mine resistance varies as the square of the quantity. The air distribution without N.V.P. will be called "normal." Natural Ventilation Present When N.V.P. is irregularly distributed in a mine, it is more convenient in analysis to consider the N.V.P. as a part of the duct resistance. If it is so considered the resistance no longer varies as the square of the quantity, and if N.V.P. exists between levels the distribution of the air is no longer normal. The total N.V.P. of the mine is the pressure caused by the full length of the shafts. If a mine has several levels, N.V.P. exists
