Barite, or barytes as it is sometimes called, belongs to one of the lesser groups of nonmetallic minerals, of which 15 to 20 varieties are mined in California in amounts varying in value from a few hundred to almost half a million dollars annually. Commercial production of barite in California, according to the records of the State Mining Bureau (now Division of Mines), began in the year 1910 with shipments totaling 860 tons, valued at $5640 f.0.b. rail shipping point. With the exception of the years 1924 and 1925, when no shipments were made, the output has varied, reaching a maximum of 17,993 tons, worth $90,617, in 1927. The 1928 output was 13,406 tons, worth $55,888 f.0.b. rail shipping point, bringing the state total to the end of 1928 to 59,972 tons, valued at $313,930. Consumption of BaRitE in United States Crude barite sold or used by producers in the United States for the year 1927 amounted to 248,219 tons, valued at $1,594,423, according to the U. S. Bureau of Mines.l In addition, there was imported, principally from Germany, a total of 70,274 tons, valued at $253,284. Manufactured products from these tonnages combined were distributed in 1927 (the latest year for which figures are at present available) as follows: ground barite, 57,658 tons; lithopone, 174,083 tons; barium chemicals (including carbonate, 4,960 tons; chloride, 3,541 tons; binoxide and sulfate or blanc Jixe combined, 13,354 tons). Missouri accounts for nearly 50 per cent of the domestic crude barite, followed by Georgia and Tennessee, with lesser amounts from Arizona, California, Nevada, South Carolina, and Virginia. Falls of roof account for over 50% of the fatalities that occur in coal mines in the US. Thus, roof control is one of the more important phases of underground mining. In reality, the control of roof influences the system of mining and is a major determinant of the width and spacing of working places, operations at the mining face, ventilation control, and surface subsidence. Frequently, the control of roof is the largest single cost item. Roof control is a never-ending task, not only at the working face and throughout sections where men are working, but along haulways and air- ways that must be maintained for the life of the mine. This is because roof, even the hest of roof, slowly deteriorates, so it must be frequently examined, with corrective support applied when needed. As coal is excavated, stresses are set up in the roof because the previous equilibrium is upset, resulting in pressures that cause fractures and slight movements that are frequently hard to detect. Unless the immediate roof, in the excavated area, is given support by artificial means, it might fall or there might be a succession of falls, varying from a thin scale to several feet, depending on the nature of the top. Exceptions to this are those rare mines, or sections of mines, with hard, strong, nonweathering roof that requires no support. GENERAL CLASSIFICATION OF ROOF There are two broad types of roof as far as support is concerned: the immediate roof above the coal and the main roof. Artificial support for mining purposes is only concerned with the immediate roof as nothing except large blocks of solid coal, or massive concrete, will support the main roof. The immediate roof is generally a few feet thick but call vary from inches to 6.1 m (20 ft) or more. Introduction The procedures used to design slopes in rock have only been developed over the past 10 years. Therefore, continued review and assessment of field experience by the publication of case studies is necessary to determine the accuracy of the theory and the application of the design techniques being used. Where failures have occurred, mine management should insist that the slides be 'back analyzed' to determine the shear strength parameters at failure. These values should be used for any pit design as they reflect site conditions more accurately than any other procedure. The previous papers have dealt with the basic concepts and factors that influence stability. To illustrate the application of these concepts in the study of practical stability problems, six ease studies have been selected for review. The examples include failure of tailings dams due to an earthquake, failure and redesign of a slope in overburden, review of failures of rock slopes, calculation of the amount of seepage into a pit and influence of the groundwater on stability, and the design of slopes for a proposed 2,500 ft. deep open pit mine. All but the first example are drawn from the authors personal experience. EXAMPLE 1 Failure of Tailings Dams Due to an Earthquake On March 28. 1965 a serious earthquake occurred in Chile with the epicenter located near the town of La Liqua, about 80 miles north of Santiago. The earthquake had a rating of 7 to 7.25 on the Richter scale. A record of the acceleration was taken at Santiago where a maximum horizontal acceleration of 0.18 g. was recorded. Many small mines are located in this region. Each of the mines provided impoundment storage for tailings with one to three dykes. As a result of the earthquake, most of the dams failed. The most serious failure involved two dams at El Cobre where more than 2,700,000 cu. yd. of tailings flowed into the valley, travelled over 7 miles in a few minutes, destroyed part of the town of El Cobre and killed more than 200 people. The Chilean government commissioned an investigation into the failures. A summary of the findings was published by Dobry and Alvare7 in 1967 (1). I would like to take a moment to consider our polystyrene-silica replica technique, which was developed at the Dow Chemical Co. and which was mentioned in the paper just given by Mr. Thielsch. He stated that he feared that our replica technique would cause difficulty due to deformation of the metal as a result of the application of pressure during the molding process. We at the Dow have never had any reason to suspect that any deformation of the metal was occurring during the molding process. Our procedure has been to heat the polystyrene to a temperature of 160°C. before applying any pressure, at which temperature the polystyrene is a viscous liquid. By so doing the pressure of the polystyrene against the metal is essentially hydraulic and is therefore applied equally in all directions, which we feel should not cause deformation. Our work using this replica technique has brought forth several indications that deformation of the specimen is negligible. These indications are: I. AN increased demand for brown iron ore in the Birmingham district during the past 18 months has caused renewed activity both in prospecting and mining these ores. In recent years the production in Alabama has ranged from 41,559 tons in 1932 to 639,351 tons in 1928. During the last 9 years about 83 per cent of the total brown ore produced in the United States has come from Alabama (Tables 1 and 2). PROSPECTING Two methods of prospecting are used in this district: (1) test pits, (2) churn-drilling. Usually there is certain quite definite information on an area to be prospected; some of the indications are float ore such as small gravel or small and large boulders known as "dornicks" scattered over the surface, and ore exposed by erosion in gulleys and ravines, which have cut or eroded through the overburden. Often these natural erosions furnish an indication of the thickness of the ore and to some extent of the area of the ore body.

The reprocessing of advanced fuels such as carbides, oxides, and cermets, containing up to 30pct pu has been studied. Dissolution of uranium carbides in nitric acid produces appreciable quantities of mellitic acid which has undesirable effects in subsequent stages of the process. Mixed oxides containing up to about 40 pct Pu in solid solution with UO, are soluble in nitric acid and a leaching type process in nitric acid for a stainless steel/UO,. PuO, fuel containing 30 pct Pu appears to be feasible. It offers considerable economic advantages THE reprocessing of the U-Cr alloy core of the Dounreay Fast Reactor was described by Buck and others at the Second Geneva conference.' This paper described the flowsheet and plant for processing a relatively simple fuel of good dissolution charac- over total dissolution routes. Of the several characteristics of a coal that influence its suitability for use in a given piece of burning equipment, the clinkering and slagging characteristics of the ash of the coal are highly important. They determine the maximum rate at which the coal may be burned on a stoker or in pulverized form without difficulty from damage to metal parts, from erosion of refractory walls, or from stoppage of gas passages by accumulation on the tubes. They also determine the minimum rate at which a slag-tap furnace may be operated without difficulty in removal of the ash in fluid form. Need for a Better Criterion In common with other producers and users of coal, the Northern Illinois Coal Corporation has long used the available methods for the measurement of the clinkering characteristics of coal ash, chemical composition and fusion temperature of the ash, as criteria for the selection of coal that would suit the particular requirements of its customers. These two available criteria have greatly helped in the problem of selection but it is unnecessary to dwell upon the fact that they are not completely adequate for the purpose. The composition of the ash and its clinkering tendency vary widely over the company's mining area. In a certain period, some years ago, an unusual amount of severe clinkering of the ash of coal shipped made extremely acute the need for a better criterion of the clinkering that might be expected. It was also desirable that the criterion result from a reasonably rapid method, so that the clinkering characteristics of the coal would be known before shipment. Complaints on the severe clinkering of the ash came from only a fraction of the output of the mine but the occurrence of the clinkering seemed quite unpredictable. Attempts to relate the chemical composition of the ash and the fusion temperatures to the clinkering were unsuccessful. Coal from the area of the mine in which the fusion temperature of the ash was the lowest gave the least trouble from clinker-ing. Chemical analysis of the ash from that section giving the most trouble showed high contents of iron and low contents of silica, but frequently these were not greatly different from those of coals that gave little trouble from clinker. Aside from the clinkering difficulty, the coal was quite satisfactory. The ash content was normal and high rates of burning could be obtained, but again and again such severe clinkering would occur that the furnace would be shut down because of the accumulation of clinker. Examination of the clinker from the customers' plants showed that the clinkers that adhered to the grates and fouled the fuel beds were hard, flat, dense, and usually dark in color. Coal that was satisfactory gave clinkers that were softer, bulky rather than flat, of low density, and usually lighter in color.

Under the impetus of new demands caused by the war, the oil and gas industries of Kansas established new records during the year 1942. In all, 1513 test wells were drilled, which is somewhat of a drop from the figure of 2113 for 1941. The 1513 tests yielded 800 new oil wells, 85 new gas wells, and 628 dry holes. Thus there was an increase in two categories, the gas wells and the dry holes. Considering that last year only 592 dry holes were completed out of a much larger total, the figure of 628 dry holes causes some concern among local operators. The increase in unsuccessful tests illustrates once more the fact that each year it is becoming harder to find the remaining oil pools. When the figures are broken down, it appears that western Kansas accounted for 1177 tests, of which 689 were oil wells, 33 gas wells, and 455 dry holes. The total potential daily initial production uncovered by the successful wells amounted to 753,178 bbl. of oil and 619,734,000 cu. it. of gas. The figures for new initial production indicate a substantial drop from last year's figure of 1,691,000 bbl., and the figures on gas are slightly higher. In 1941 the new gas as based on a daily potential was 508,000,-000 cu. ft. In eastern Kansas, 336 wells were drilled. Among these in were oil wells, accounting for a daily initial potential production of 16,199 bbl. The new gas wells numbered 52 and added 253,725,000 cu. ft. per day to the gas potential production of the state. The remaining tests, 173 in number, were dry. It is interesting and perhaps significant that about half (630) of the wells drilled in western Kansas were drilled by the independent operators. Among the large companies, the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 163 wells; the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co., 52; the Skelly Oil Co., 39; the Continental Oil Co., 48; and the Shell Petroleum Co., 21 wells. In eastern Kansas the independent operators drilled 297 out of the total of 336 wells. Among the major oil companies the Cities Service Oil Co. drilled 19; the Phillips Petroleum Co. 7; and the Sinclair-Prairie Oil Co., 6 wells. The figures based on relative percentages of dry holes to successful oil or gas wells are revealing. In western Kansas almost one half of all wells drilled by the independent operators were dry holes. The major oil companies drilled approximately 547 wells in western Kansas, of which 379 were successful in finding either oil or gas. It thus appears that the major companies fared better than the independents. In eastern Kansas the major companies drilled 39 wells, of which 29 were successful in finding commercial quantities of oil or of gas. No less than 329 wildcat test holes were put down in western Kansas and 105 in eastern Kansas, or 434 in all, during 1942. Considerably more than half of these were drilled by independent operators; 223 in western and 99 in eastern Kansas. An exploratory hole 56 mile or more from production is regarded as a wildcat well in Kansas. On a percentage basis, about 80 per cent of wildcat wells were failures. In spite of many investigations of the occlusion of hydrogen in iron, the nature of the process and the reasons for the accompanying effects upon the metal are still open questions. This is in large part due to three causes: (1) the difficulty of obtaining iron of adequate purity as starting material; (2) the occurrence of allotropic transformations, which complicate the effects; and (3) the fact that the body-centered cubic modification does not lend itself readily to crystallographic investigation. The present paper attempts a critical review and correlation of the somewhat scattered and disconnected existing observations, and an experimental determination of the extent to which the conclusions that appear to follow from these are applicable to iron of really high purity, studied under well-defined conditions. Review Although only a comparatively few investigations have so far been made on the pure system iron-hydrogen, there is a much larger volume of literature which throws some light on the problem but falls short of a place in the systematic investigations, either because no attempt was made to measure equilibrium conditions or because the metal used was not iron or the gas not pure hydrogen. Such results have been variously dismissed in the past as of no importance, or as too complicated to try to explain; or they have been explained in terms of any of a dozen or more pictures, each of which is contradicted by data from other sources. The present importance of these data thus arises from their very mass and diversity, which present a picture of occlusion as a phenomenon whose variability cannot be ignored. We have attempted to organize the literature into groups comprising similar experiments or data leading to similar conclusions, thus of necessity sacrificing accuracy of historical order. Lattice Occlusion.—Throughout this discussion, the term "lattice occlusion" will be used to denote the formation of a simple solid solution of a gas in a metal lattice, usually of interstitial distribution. INTRODUCTION BELT conveyors generally are conceded to be the most economical method yet devised for the transportation of large quantities of bulk materials within plants. Belts are coming into greater use for transportation over long distances and are replacing other forms of long-haul conveyance. It is not the intent of the writer to comment on the design of belt conveyors, but to offer some suggestions for improvement in the operation of conveying belts, based on many years experience with belts in several stonecrushing plants. It is the contention of this writer that opportunities for improvement not fully realized by most operators exist in many plants and that a study of the individual conveyors can result in lower unit belt costs. GENERAL RELIABILITY It is the fool-proof nature and general reliability of the belt conveyor that is responsible for its neglect. Even when abused, a belt will carry large tonnages and last a long time, often outlasting the personnel responsible for its care. Some operators look upon the purchase of a new belt as an expensive outlay every so many years, rather than a constant and steady cost amounting in belt wear alone to several dollars every operating day. This belt wear for all conveyors in one stone-crushing plant known by the writer costs 1 1/2 cents per ton or $12 to $15 per hour, based on the present cost of belt replacements. The fact that these replacement costs are double those of prewar quality emphasizes the necessity of improving the conditions that make belts wear out. Some of those conditions are the responsibility of the conveyor designer, and if a serious original error has been made, this handicap cannot be overcome by the operator. If the belt is too narrow, too steep, or too fast for good loading, the operator finds that he has an inherently expensive belt. The other factors that decrease the life of a belt are more or less under his control. The two factors of most importance are the loading conditions and the alignment. Most of the cover wear and carcass cutting occurs at the loading point and if the alignment is not good under all conditions, edge wear or damage may result, Fig I. LOADING THE BELT It is difficult to load a belt in an ideal manner; that is, to flow the material on the moving belt at a steady rate, without impact, without turbulence, and with a velocity equal to and in the same direction as the belt. In measuvements of the solubility of nitrogen in fer-rilic Fe-P alloys, tile nitrogen solubility is found to be Less in pIrospliorus-bearing alloys than in pure iron. The reduction in solubility is about 20 pct in a 1.0 wt pct P alloy at 1300°C and about 30 pct in a 0.23 wt pct P alloy at 440°C. Diffusion coefficient measurements at 1150 and 585°C show that phosphorus also decreases the nitrogen diffusivity in iron. In previous work on the Fe-P-N system, phosphorus was found to reduce the nitrogen solubility in liquid iron slightly.&apos; Indirect evidence for similar behavior in a Fe at low temperature was obtained by Dickenscheid and Brauner.&apos; These authors found that phosphorus reduces the height of the internal-friction peak due to dissolved nitrogen. The results of Dickenscheid and Brauner were confirmed by J. C. Swartz of this Laboratory in a single internal-friction experiment using the same specimen stock as in the solubility measurements described below. In the present investigation, the solubility of nitrogen in a fer rite-stabilized Fe-1.0 wt pct P alloy was measured in the temperature range from 800" to 1300°C. Additional experiments were performed in the temperature range from 440° to 585°C, using an Fe-0.23 wt pct P alloy and NH3-H2 gas mixtures. EXPERIMENTAL The experiments were performed in a vertical tube furnace wound with platinum wire. For experimental temperatures of 800°C and above, a mixture of 5 pct Hz in N2 was used as the reacting gas. The gas mixture was prepurified from oxygen by passage over platinized asbestos at 450°C, and subsequently over anhydrone to remove water. Flow rates of the gases were measured with capillary flow meters. The temperature was measured before and after each experiment with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple. The specimens used for the high-temperature solubility measurements were in the form of rectangular plates, 0.534 by 1.6 by 3.8 cm. The specimens were cleaned in trichloroethylene and annealed for 2 hr in hydrogen at the beginning of each experiment. In measuring the nitrogen solubility, the specimens were held in the reacting gas until equilibrated, then cooled in a water-cooled copper block at the bottom of the furnace. The time needed for equilibration at 1150°C was determined by measuring the average nitrogen content of the 1.0 pct P alloy as a function of reaction time. As will be described, the nitrogen diffusivity in the alloy at 1150°C is only slightly less than its calculated diffusivity in pure iron. At temperatures other than 1150°C, the reaction time used in measuring the nitrogen solubility was about twice the calculated equilibration time for pure iron at the same temperature. With a few exceptions, the procedure for the low-temperature solubility measurements was the same as that described above. The compositions of the NH3-H2 gas mixtures were determined by collecting gas samples from the gas train and analyzing them for NH3 by titration with HC1. The specimen thicknesses were less than those used for the high-temperature experiments, eg., 0.124 and 0.051 cm for measurements at 585° and 440°C, respectively. Nitrogen concentrations were obtained by chemical analysis, using the Kjeldahl method. The Fe-P alloys were made by adding ferrophos-phorus to electrolytic Plastiron (Type 104 A). Commercial ferrophosphorus, containing 3 pct Mn and 0.35 pct Si as the major impurities, was first purified by melting under an FeO slag. In a separate heat, the electrolytic iron was melted and vacuum-carbon-deoxidized prior to making the ferrophosphorus addition. The principal impurities and their concentrations in weight percent in the 1.0 pct P alloy are as follows: Mn, 0.01; Si, <0.01; C, 0.01; 0, 0.003; and N, 0.0012.
