OPEN-PIT mining of coal is relatively a recent innovation; men still active in the industry can trace its development. Re- viewing the growth of operations from the original horse-drawn scrapers, through the various stages of power equipment to the huge strip- ping shovels of today, one also notes changes in the methods of what the coal man calls preparation at the face. We really should not call it face preparation because, in contrast to underground mining, a face does not exist in strip mining. Further, preparation of the coal for market at the loading point has already, in but a few years, become largely of historic interest only and modern mines as well as old mines recently modernized rely almost entirely on separate and elaborate preparation plants to produce marketable coal. An empirical study of the nature of the embrittle-ment which occurs in martensitic and semiaustenitic precipitation hardening stainless steels upon exposure at temperatures of from about 550" to 875°F has been undertaken. This work was aimed at determining cazusation and means of controlling this phenomenon. A commercial copper bearing precipitation hardening alloy was used as a basic material for study. The effect of heat treatment variables was studied as was the effect of variations in analysis. It is concluded from the evidence that martensitic and semiaustenitic precipitation hardening stainless steels are subject to 885°F ernbrittlement similar to that observed in the straight chromium stainless steels. A characteristic of precipitation hardening stainless steels which has limited their use in certain applications is that they embrittle when held at temperatures in the range of from about 550" to 900°F. This is true to a more or less degree in all currently available alloys, either the basically martensitic type or the semiaustenitic type. The rate of embrittlement varies markedly with exposure temperature, being low at 550" to 600°F and in-creasing as the temperature increases. In spite of this embrittlement, these alloys with their unique combination of high mechanical strength, reasonable toughness, and good corrosion resistance are used in many hundreds of applications. Nevertheless, there are potential applications where the embrittle-ment described is a limiting factor. The purpose of this investigation was to study the embrittlement of these alloys and to find a way to control or eliminate it. GUIDELINES USED IN PRESENT WORK The work reported in this paper is based on a study of 17-4 PH*, a very widely used alloy. It has been used *Trademark of Armco Steel Corp., licensor. in pressurized water and boiling water atomic reactors operating at about 550°F for a number of years. As the life of such equipment is extended or operating temperatures are raised, the possibility of embrit-tlement becomes of increasing concern to materials engineers. Much investigation work was done with respect to the use of 17-4 PH at 550°F. K. C. Antony' states "Such estimation" (of an activation energy for the diffusion of chromium in iron) "would indicate W. This statement is modified however by the recognition of the accelerating tendencies of applied stress and internal stress as well as the possible effect of irradiation. In this investigation of 17-4 PH, the H 1100 (1900°F-1 hr oil quench or air cool + 1100°F-4 hr-air cool) condition was used, partly because this condition is normally used in atomic reactors. As shown later, the precipitation hardening temperature has no real bearing on the rate of embrittlement. An exposure temperature of 800°F was selected since embrittlement at 800°F is rapid, permitting development of relative data in time periods of 400 to 500 hr. For those not familiar, a nominal present day analysis of 17-4 PH is: C Mn P S SiCrNiCuCbN 0.04 0.30 0.015 0.015 0.60 16.00 4.30 3.25 0.23 0.030 TYPICAL BEHAVIOR OF 17-4 PH Figs. 1 and 2 show the behavior of a commercial heat of 17-4 PH under the conditions defined. Characteristically, 800°F exposure causes a rapid drop in Charpy V-notch impact strength. Tensile and yield strengths gradually increase and a gradual loss of elongation and reduction of area occur, accompanied by an increase in hardness. Notched tensile strength increases to 125 hr exposure and then sharply decreases after exposure for 500 hr. The notched vs un-notched tensile ratio remains virtually constant to exposure for 125 hr (1.67 to 1.56) but drops to 1.15 after 500 hr. Tensile ductility is not alarmingly affected even after much longer exposure times than these. For example, samples aged at 1100°F for 1 hr exposed at 800°F for 4000 hr showed a drop in elonga-tion of from 13 to 11 pct and in reduction of area of from 58 to 37 pct. DURING the last half century a great amount, of ingenuity and energy has been devoted to the invention of appliances for the recovery of valuable minerals from very fine sands and-slimes. The reason for this is that in almost every, dressing plant the greatest losses of values, considered relatively as well as absolutely, occur in the treatment of slimes. The natural aim of mill operators to minimize these losses has in recent years received another impetus,, from the fact that the gradually diminishing occurrence of high-grade ores makes a more intense recovery of values from existing resources absolutely necessary for profitable operation. The results of such attempts are found in the appearance of a great number of machines and appliances which make it profitable to-day to rework old dumps, containing the tailings of older processes. A constantly growing difficulty of obtaining skilled labor and the increase in wages made it prohibitory to employ those types of machines which required much attention, and in the middle of the nineteenth century the various concentrating tables of the percussion type, which automatically discharge their products, began to take the .place of the intermittent tables, on which, when the bed had reached a certain thickness, operation had to be stopped in order to allow the skimming by hand of the separate layers formed on the table. In the course of. years, two general types of machines evolved for the treatment of fine sands and slimes :- The so-called concentrators and vanners, on the one hand, and the huddles and round tables on . the other.1 For the profitable treatment of the very finest slimes, round tables have as a last resort proved more satisfactory and economical than other machines.

The paper of Gifkins and Snowden considers the interesting but difficult problem of determining the stress dependence of secondary (steady-state) creep at low stresses. These authors have concluded that at stresses below 250 psi (2 x 107 dynes per sq cm) the secondary creep rate of lead is proportional to the stress (viscous creep) and is not proportional to the stress raised to about a fifth power. The experimental data considered by them were obtained on tests conducted at room temperature and at 50°C. The lowest stress employed was 50 psi (3.5 X 106 dynes per sq cm). The authors pointed out the main difficulty in determining the stress dependence of creep at low stresses. The creep tests must be run for very long lengths of time. However they made no estimates of when an experimental creep rate determination must be rejected because it does not represent a true steady-state or minimum creep rate. In order to be certain that a creep curve is within the steady-state region, the total creep strain should be of the order of 0.1 to 0.2. For a creep test of a year's duration this requirement implies that a secondary creep rate smaller than about 10-3 per hr cannot be measured reliably. The corresponding creep rate for a 10-year test is 10-6 per hr. The creep rates of the tests that were considered by the authors to prove the existence of viscous creep were of the order of or less than 10-6 per hr. One can conclude reasonably that this data does not prove unambiguously that large strain steady-state creep rate of lead is proportional to the stress in the stress range of 50 to 250 psi (3.5 x 106 to 2 X 107 dynes per sq cm). Another technique can be used to obtain the stress dependence at low stress levels. The creep rate is a very sensitive function of temperature. The creep rate can be increased by very large amounts merely by increasing the temperature. We carried out steady-state creep tests on lead single crystals25 at temperatures up to 320°C. We were able to obtain creep rate data down to stresses as low as 35 psi (2.5 x 10' dynes per sq cm). Our smallest creep rate was 8 x 10-5 per hr. Thus we obtained large strain, steady-state creep rates to even lower stresses than were considered by Gifkins and Snowden. No evidence was seen for viscous creep. The creep rate was proportional to the stress raised to about a 4.5 power down to the lowest stresses. Since there is no reason to believe that changing the temperature should change the stress dependence of steady-state creep, we feel that large strain viscous creep does not occur in the stress range quoted by the authors for lead single crystals or large-grain polycrystalline samples of lead. This conclusion does not imply that viscous creep may nat occur in a lower stress range or in the same stress range for fine grain material or at creep strains very much smaller than 0.1. Snowden We thank Dr. Weertman for his discussion and although, as we hope to show, we do not agree with his reservations, we do concur in stressing the importance of ensuring that creep rates are reliably obtained. Dr. Weertman appears to be content to accept n = 1 for low stresses with fine-grained material but not for single crystals. We believe our results show that the former result cannot be accepted without also accepting the latter. We will also show that the probable errors in our minimum creep rates are insufficient to alter our conclusions, that the criterion proposed by Dr. Weertman is arbitrarily restrictive and his alternative experimental approach possibly invalid. 1) A principal result of our Fig. 1(a) is that n = 1 for polycrystalline specimens at room temperature and 50°C for stresses below -250 psi. There was evidence that crystal slip and grain boundary sliding contributed approximately equaily to the overall strain in this low-stress regime. This implies that either a) grain boundary sliding controls slip within the grains or b) both grain boundary sliding and crystal slip independently occur according to mechanisms which give n = 1. Alternative a does not seem acceptable, so we were forced to consider b. This led us to reexamine work on bicrystals by Strutt and Gifkins and plot curves Fig. l(b). Previously Strutt et al. (loc. cit.), had merged these points with others using the Zener-Holloman parameter and thus, we now believe, had been led to overlook the behavior where n = 1. Curves C and D in Fig. l(b) did appear to confirm the hypotheses that n = 1 for crystal slip at these low stresses and the sliding curve F was similarly of the expected form. It was comparatively easy to find a quantitative theory to account for n = 1 for sliding and the similarity of curves C and D to curve F (all obtained from the same set of specimens) led us to feel that the single-crystal curves were valid. 2) We believe the secondary creep rates for both the polycrystalline and single-crystal specimens to be in error by factors c2. In Fig. 6 creep curves for polycrystalline specimens of lead(1) and lead(II) are reproduced as curves a and b, respectively, and curve c is for a single crystal at 100 psi. It is clear that, although the attainment of secondary creep rate takes 2 years for a and 150 days for b, thereafter the curve is linear for periods of 7 and -1 year, respectively. The single crystal has a linear portion commencing after 20 and extending to 90 days. Test work conducted in the 6.4 and 10.5 m (21 and 34 ft) Aerofall mills at the Iron Ore Co. of Canada Carol project showed that conventionally used "deflector" type liners, which form the basic principle of Aerofall Mill grinding, did not necessarily provide the best grinding performance. A new design, using low profile liners incorporating radial ribs of proper height, actually improved the mill throughput 9-20% without sacrificing grinding efficiency. In addition, the new design reduced liner weight and scrap losses, resulting in a 25% reduction in liner consumption. It provided better protection to the mill shell and reduced the overall maintenance cost for the mills.

In the limestone area of Tintic and other mining districts of the Great Basin region of Utah, it has been observed that surface-outcrops of ore occur but seldom, and are mainly confilled to points of relatively low elevation, where the veins cross some basin or ravine. Nowhere does a considerable body of ore outcrop on the tops or high up on the slopes of the hills. Mining operations, on the other hand, have shown that large and continuous ore-deposits frequently occur in depth in the limestone, beneath large masses of barren rock. Such orebodies, when followed upward in the lodes, are found to terminate at well-defined levels, without reaching the surface. Yet the minerals-bearing fissures themselves extend above the top of the ore, being often traceable, though barren of all valuable minerals, for hundreds of feet above the stopes in the mines, and even observable in outcrops at the surface. This abrupt cessation of the ore at a uniform horizon does not appear to be connected with any change in the countryrock adjacent to the lodes. The strata above and below this horizon seem to be in every way equally favorable to ore-deposition. Explorations above it have developed an open-fissured country, barren not only of ore, but also of indications that minerals bearing gold, silver, lead or copper were ever deposited in the strata at that elevation. The height reached by the ore, while usually constant throughout the length of a given lode, may vary in particular sections, from the operation of local causes. The chemical reaction occurring in collection of nonmetallic minerals with amine-type collectors was early postulated by students of flotation phenomena to be metathesis between the mineral and the collector, involving exchange between the amine-bearing (aminium) ion and the cation of the mineral, and formation at the mineral surface of an oriented film of the amine salt of the mineral anion. Qualitative evidence of exchange has been obtained on several occasions at Columbia. Thus 1000 C.C. of a solution containing 495 mg of laurylamine hydrochloride was shaken 17 min. with 100 grams of barite and ground in a porcelain mill to pass a 200-mesh screen; the mixture was then set aside for 48 hr. Filtrate therefrom analyzed 476 mg. per liter of laurylamine hydrochloride. There was no substantial loss of chloride ion (78.4 mg. per liter in the original; 74 in the filtrate). No successful analyses were concluded for barium ion. Earlier, confessedly rough work with scheelite indicated a solution gain in Ca++ equivalent to about one-half the aminium ion lost. Real quantitative roof of the exchange, in the form of an established stoichiometric balance, is unknown to the authors. The data of the present paper, however, obtained from experiments designed on the basis of the exchange hypothesis, constitute strong evidence of its truth, and at the same time point the way to economic utilization of the expensive nitrogen-bearing collectors in concentration of the low-priced nonmetallic minerals. The basic postulate underlying the experiments performed was that, if the collecting reaction is of the type R+ + Y- + MX = RX + M+ + Y- where R = aminium ion, Y = the anion of the amine salt, and M and X are, respectively, the cation and anion of the mineral, the reaction should obey qualitatively the implications of the mass-action and solubility-product laws. This is to say that coating and collection should be aided by the addition to the solution of either ion (R+ or X-) of the collector-coating compound, and hindered by the addition of either of the ions M+ or y-. Experimental work comprised determination of (,) the relative solubilities of the laurylammonium salts of a variety of nonmetallic-mineral anions; and (21 the contact angles' of various minerals in solutions containing different concentrations of the postulated controlling ions. ALTHOUGH data on the exact tonnage of recoverable coal silt are not known, the quantity produced in 1943 was estimated to be over five million tons for the anthracite region of Pennsylvania alone. Since that time the recovery of the No. 5 buck- wheat size previously included in silt estimates has increased greatly thus reducing the total silt tonnage. As a compensating factor, however, the methods of recovering silt previously escaping into the rivers and streams have been markedly improved so that the net figure may not have changed materially. Comparable estimates for bituminous coal are lacking, but undoubtedly the silt represents a significant tonnage. With the trend toward increased wet cleaning of the smaller sizes of bituminous coal, it is to be expected that even greater quantities of silt will be available in the future. The raw silt from anthracite collieries usually contains a high mineral matter content, but technological developments in fine coal cleaning have been making rapid advances and it appears probable that more extensive use of these methods will be employed in the near future. Bituminous coal silt in many instances contains a similar high mineral matter content. As with anthracite silt, however, the cleaning of this material, where necessary, appears both technologically and economically feasible. With a view to upgrading the size and value of silt, considerable laboratory and pilot plant work has been conducted by a number of organizations on what is commonly known as pelletization. Actually the process is one of extrusion in which the moist silt is extruded from a die in the form of rods, which usually break into relatively short lengths-a few inches long-as they fall from the die. Fig I is a photograph of some extruded 3/8-in. diam pellets and of the anthracite silt from which they were produced. This technique of producing larger sized material from fines is by no means new, having been used extensively by the industrial carbon and clay industries for years.' The application of the process to coal silt appears, however, to be relatively new. The first major program of investigation dates back only to July 1945, when a group of engineers representing the Anthracite Institute, The Pennsylvania State College and the J. F. Pritchard and Co. conducted preliminary tests on the extrusion of anthracite silt at the Floridin Co. plant at Warren, Pa. Since that time these three organizations-individually, together, and in co- operation with other interested groups- have actively pursued work on various phases of the problem. Much of the early history and details of the laboratory and pilot plant work by the Anthracite Institute, has been reported by Mulcey and Eckerd.2 It is the purpose of this paper to report additional information on the process, especially with respect to the factors influencing the quality and use properties of the product, and the current develop

The choice of a nonferrous metal or alloy for a given Application is frequently predicated upon a consideration of properties other than merely the capacity to withstand stress. When ability to withstand stress is the dominant engineering requisite of the material to be used, economic considerations seldom lead to the choice of nonferrous metals and alloys. In most instances where a nonferrous metal is used it is because of some special quality of either corrosion resistance, electrical properties, thermal properties, antifriction, or fabrication advantage that commends its application. The mechanical properties, as a rule, present an incidental engineering consideration entirely secondary to the special quality deciding its use. Indeed, great ingenuity has often been exhibited by engineers and metallurgists in overcoming the mechanical shortcomings of a nonferrous base material. in order to take advantage of some outstanding property. . With this thought in mind, we might better appreciate some of the problems in stress design. encountered with nonferrous metals and alloys pertinent to a symposium on their creep characteristics. Our considerations must necessarily be far from complete because of the broad range of materials in the nonferrous category for which creep properties assume a technical interest. Creep deformation of these metals can be subject for study at temperatures ranging from ambient to incandescent, depending upon which one is under consideration. Whereas the steel metallurgist thinks of creep as an essentially high-temperature engineering consideration, the same is not necessarily true in the field at hand. The diversity of the creep problems in the nonferrous field is perhaps accountable to some extent for its virginity as a symposium subject. Each research has necessarily been sponsored by some organization or group interested either in promoting the use of a certain nonferrous base or in obtaining data toward the solution of a mechanical difficulty encountered in applying a material indispensable for its special attributes. Perhaps as many techniques of creep testing have been used as there are base metals implied under "nonferrous." Some of the creep problems that have occasioned researches are associated with steam-pressure vessels such as tubes, drums, castings, and forgings of copper-base and nickel-base alloys, cable sheathings of lead and lead-base alloys, electrical transmission lines of copper and aluminum, engine parts die-cast from alloys based on zinc, aluminum, copper— soldered and brazed joints-—as well as numerous duties at extremely high temperatures met with alloys based on cobalt, nickel, tungsten, molybdenum, platinum, and other precious or semiprecious metals. Postwar technology will have the benefit of much creep research on nonferrous metals, which for reasons of security cannot be discussed on this occasion. A progress report on the oil-shale and shale-oil processing research program at the U. s. Bureau of Mines Oil-Shale Demonstration Plant. Legislation providing for the program and aims are briefly noted. The remoteness and rugged nature of the terrain at the plant site are important factors in construction and operations. Large-scale units now in operation are the crushing plant and two 40-ton N-T-U retorts. These are described in detail. Under construction are several retorting pilot plants and a 200 bbl per day refinery. The refineiy incorporates several types of thermal operation, three-stage low-temperature acid treating, doctor sweetening and rerunning. Data are presented on typical N-T-U retort runs. Yields of 90 to loo pct of assay are realized on 30 gal to the ton shale with a retort cycle time of 18 hr. Data also are presented showing a comparison of a Mid-Continent petroleum and N-T-U shale oil. This comparison indicates that shale oil has a high pour point, low API gravity, and contains about 0.8 pct sulphur and 2 pct nitrogen. The naphtha fraction contains 3 pct tar acids, 9 pct tar bases and jo pct olefins. The problems involved in refining shale oil into usable products are discussed in detail. Introduction The Bureau of Mines oil-shale program now under way at Rifle, Colo., was begun in July 1944 under the provisions of the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act, which was passed in the spring of that year under the sponsorship of Senator Joseph C. O'Ma-honey of Wyoming and Congressman Jennings Randolph of West Virginia, aided by Michael W. Straus, former Assistant Secretary of the Interior, and others. The oil-shale plant is only a part of the Office of Synthetic Liquid Fuels, Bureau of Mines, which has under way projects to develop synthetic liquid fuels from coal and other solid materials at Pittsburgh and Bruceton, Pa., Morgantown, W. Va., Louisiana, Mo., as well as the Petroleum and Oil-Shale Experiment Station at Laramie, Wyo., and the oil-shale demonstration plant at Rifle. The oil-shale program is entirely experimental. It is not intended that oil will be produced in great quantities. Production will be limited to the volume obtained from plant-scale experimental operations, which will be kept to the minimum size needed to develop techniques and processes and to demonstrate costs. After the passage of the enabling act in the summer of 1944 a survey of the oil-shale resources of the Nation was made to determine the most suitable general area in which to establish the demonstration plant. Pressing of powdered metal parts is best done in the direction of the shortest extension of the piece, to avoid too great a loss of pressing force through internal iriction. As long as curved surfaces, re-cessej, or offsets occur only parallel to this shortest axis of pressure, no special difficulties arise: the cross sections, perpendicular to the pressure, do not vary, nor does the shape of the parts change during compression except for a gradually reduced thickness (Fig. IA). The problem becomes more dificult, however, when the curved surfaces or recesses are perpendicular to the shortest axis of the part (Fig. IB) Two processes for molding uniformly dense parts with complicated shapes from powdered metals are described in detail in this paper. Both can be employed successfully by those trained in the art. The first refers to curved parts; the second is especially adapted to parts having one or more recesses or steps. Both methods, as set forth here, are applied under the condition that presents the more difficult problem. For clarity, before description of the two practical methods, the variable factors in molding powdered metal parts will be reviewed, then an idealized procedure will be considered briefly. Variable Factors in Molding Powdered Metal Parts Compression Ratio Compression ratio is defined as the proportion of the final relative density of the compact to the apparent density of the powder. For iron powder of an apparent density of 3.0, for example, a compression ratio of 2 1/2:1 would be required to produce a compressed compact of 7.5 density; whereas for another iron powder having an apparent density of only 1.5, a compression ratio of 5:1 would be required to produce the same density. The lower the powder's apparent density, the greater must be the compression ratio for pressing compacts of high density.

INCLUSIONS of nonmetallic matter have long been recognized as objectionable in steel. A complete theory of the effect of inclusions, which is consistent with that held today, was outlined in Howe's early work on the metallurgy of iron and steel. This, by analogy with wrought iron, assumes that the observed difference in properties between specimens with and across the direction of rolling is due to slag enclosures. The fact that wrought iron shatters in ballistic test is taken as an indica-tion of the effect of inclusions on the resistance to shock. Since that time, the development of the metallurgical microscope has shown the discrete nonmetallic inclusions in the iron matrix. Better resolution has, brought out the great number of inclusions, and the availability of good microscopes in steel mills and laboratories has constantly drawn more attention to these inclusions. This recent emphasis on inclusions has resulted in studies as to their nature, mode of formation and methods of elimination, such as the work of Wohrman, Dickenson, Herty, and Schenk. In addition to the published works; many investigations which have not been published' have been carried out by private laboratories and have resulted in the application of specifications intended to limit inclusions in many qualities of steel. Nevertheless, a clear understanding of the quantitative effect of inclusions on the physical properties of steel has been lacking. It is the specific purpose of this study to determine the quantitative effect of inclusions on the physical properties of steel that determine its behavior under dynamic stress. The study has shown that a quantitative relation between counted inclusions and impact strength does exist in normalized steels, but 'that factors other than readily visible inclusions are equally important. Furthermore, the present commercial rating of inclusions is unreliable with respect to counted inclusions or dynamic tests, and this study indicates that the tensile-impact test is more reliable as a measure of quality.

In a recent study1 of the deformation of metastable beta copper-zinc and beta copper-tin crystals, it was established that the parallel markings that appear on the surface of these crystals after slight deformation represent lattice transformations. Stereographic analysis showed that in beta copper-tin, the poles of these markings deviated one or two degrees from poles of the form {133}. In beta copper-zinc the plane delineated by the markings corresponded to no one crystallographic plane of the matrix lattice; the marking poles deviated from 5° to 11° from poles of the form (110), and were displaced only a few degrees from (110) zones. Inasmuch as the new transition lattices produced as the result of the deformation are different for each alloy, it was thought at first that the habits of the markings might be the result of a cooperation between matrix lattice and transformed lattice. (Both matrix lattices arc body-centered cubic.) Such a cooperative effect is thought to obtain in the formation of Widmanstätten figures, for it is well known that the matrix lattice alone does not determine the habit assumed by a segregate phase. On the other hand, it is not inconceivable that the dissimilarity in marking habit might be due to differences in deformation characteristics of beta brass and beta bronze. Barrett and co-workers2 have shown that slip-line habits in pure iron are markedly different from those in high-silicon ferrite; and although it has been repeatedly demonstrated that plates of a segregate phase do not necessarily form on the slip planes of the matrix lattice, deformation characteristics may be more intimately allied with plate formation when a transformation is made to occur as a result of plastic deformation. However, there is the fact that the orientation of markings in metastable beta copper-zinc is the same whether the markings be produced by quenching, deformation, or liquid-air cooling; likewise, quenching and deformation markings in metastable beta copper-tin are oriented in the same way with respect to the beta matrix. MANY of you who are interested in the manufacture of iron and steel, have no doubt heard of the "Wheeler process for combining iron and steel." Mr. Wheeler has formed a company, styled the "Combination Trust Company," whose business is to grant licenses for the use of this patent process in producing what he calls "iron-clad steel." It has been proposed to apply it in the manufacture of car or wagon axles, also to shafting, having steel cores or centres covered with iron; to tubes of steel with an inner and outer skin of iron ; to structural purposes, such as girders and beams; bridge and tie-bolts, where the strength of the iron and the rigidity of the steel would be desirable. In answer to a request from Mr. Wheeler, permission was accorded him to make some experiments at the rolling mill of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, at Reading, Pennsylvania, with a view to manufacturing some steel-headed rails. In making this kind of a rail two difficulties are encountered. If the iron is brought to the requisite heat to weld properly, the steel is likely to be burned ; if the steel is cared for, to prevent burning, the several layers of iron are not brought up to the proper welding heat. Mr. Wheeler claimed that the steel slab covered with iron which be furnished for the head of the rail could not be injured by any heat to which it might be subjected in the ordinary course of heating the rail-pile. He claimed, also, that by this method the porosity, which he thought was characteristic of all solid rails of Bessemer steel, would be overcome. Four steel slabs were furnished for this experiment, being Bessemer steel of .61 carbon, made at the Edgar Thomson Steel Works, and covered with iron in one of the Pittsburgh mills. The slabs were in section seven inches wide by three inches thick, and the iron covering was one-eighth to three-sixteenths inch thick. Each slab was placed on a pile of iron made up in the ordinary way for a rail fifty-six pounds per yard and thirty feet long. The heating was under the personal direction of Mr. Wheeler, and

ALTHOUGH gold is one of the rarer metals, it is widely distributed; it is found on all of the continents and in each of the grand metallogenic provinces of the earth. It is prominent particularly in the shield areas of the earth; these areas have produced a large part of the world's lode gold and in most of them gold lodes are more important than the lodes of other metals. The Scandinavian shield is the only one that has not produced much gold. Nearly all of the world's gold has been derived from lodes and from sands and gravels where gold placers formed by the destruction of lodes. The gold derived from magmatic segregations, from pegmatites and from contact metamorphic deposits is quite subordinate to that derived from auriferous lodes. The lodes include all veins and related deposits that are formed by hot waters that move along fissures or other openings and that deposit vein matter in the fissures and by replacement of the country rocks along the fissures. All of the shield areas of the earth are characterized by large areas of granitic rocks including granitic gneisses, granodiorites and other acid intrusives which here are included in the general term "granite." The granites are intruded into schists, ancient lavas and other rocks which here are designated as the "invaded" rocks. The granites are parts of what once were great batholiths: that is, they are the remaining portions of great deep-seated bodies that slope outward, have very irregular roofs and so far as known have no floors but extend downward to great though unknown depths. Some of them are scores or hundreds of miles across and contain islands or "roof pendants" of the invaded rocks at places where the roofs of the batholiths were low-that is, where erosion has not yet completely unroofed the batholiths.
