The convenience of mechanical arrangements for handling ingots, blooms, billets, bars, beams, etc., and feeding them to the rolls, is so universally recognized as to require no demonstration. In the rolling of heavy beams, such as are now coming into general use, such arrangements are practically essential, by reason of the difficulty and expense of the manual handling of the large masses of metal treated. I submit herewith the drawings of a rolling-mill feed-table, designed and patented by myself, which I think will be found simple in construction and operation, not likely to get . out of order, and efficient in performing the work for which it is intended. Fig. 1 is a sectional plan, taken on the line I I of Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line II II of Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on line III III of Figs. 1 and 2. As the details of the drawings are numbered throughout, and the same number always indicates the same part, I cannot more clearly describe the mechanism than by giving the following key to these numbers: Nos. 2 and 3 are the sets of rolls (here shown as three-high rolls, though that is not absolutely necessary). Nos. 4, 4 are the two feed-tables, one on each side of the rolls. The uide frames of the tables are made of parallel channel-bars. Nos. 6, 5 are the feed-rollers, journaled between the channel-bars and provided at their ends with beveled gear-wheels, 6, 6, which mesh with beveled pinions, 7, 7, on shafts, 8, 8, which latter are driven by elevated power-connections, to be mentioned presently. Previous to the war, this country depended on Europe for its supply of a number of alloys of great importance in the manufacture of electrical apparatus and equipment. When this source was cut off shortly after the beginning of hostilities and the small stocks in the United States were exhausted, either inferior substitutes had to be used or the manufacture of the apparatus suspended. Since electrical equipment was of primary importance in the prosecution of the war, the substitutes had to be used until the composition and processes of manufacture of the alloys could be determined. Included among these alloys was one generally known as manganin, which is composed chiefly of copper and manganese and which, beside having a low-temperature coefficient of resistance, has a low thermal electromotive force against copper. These qualities make it valuable for the manufacture of electrical instruments and machines in which it is used in the shape of wire, rod, and strip. As a result of these circumstances, an investigation was started to determine how manganin could be made on a commercial basis so that a product of uniform quality and the necessary electrical characteristics could be produced. The object was to procure an alloy with temperature coefficient of resistance not greater than 1 X 1X per " C. and a thermal e.m.f. against copper no greater than that of the imported material. It is characteristic of manganin that the temperature-resistance curve is not a straight line but has a peak, which varies in position with different samples; it is most desirable, however, to have it at a temperature of 25' C. if possible. The coefficients of manganin from all records available ranged from a large negative to a large positive value. The composition as reported by different authorities is given in Table I. Prof. Matthew A. Hunter, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, made up a number of small melts of manganin in a graphite crucible and the one that he reported as having the best cocfficient gave the following analysis: Copper, 83.6 per cent.; nickel 2.5 per cent.; manganese, 13.6 per cent.; iron, 0.3 per cent. An analysis of a sample of German manganin gave the following: Copper, 82.6 per cent.; nickel, 3.8 pcr cent.; manganese, 12.8 per cent.; iron 0.7 per cent.

The heat of solution at infinite dilution of selenium in bismuth, the heat of mixing of selenium and bismuth, and the limit of solubility of selenium in bis~rzuth have been determined at 573, 623; and 663°K by metal solution calorimetry. The heat of forrrzation of the compound Bi2Se at these temperatures has been determined from the heat effects associated with the precipitation of the compound from a saturated solution oj selenium and bismuth. The published information on the thermodynamic properties of the system Bi-Se is limited. The heat of solution at infinite dilution of selenium in bismuth at 623°K has been measured.' The heat of formation at 273 K1 and room temperature2 and the heat capacity at 80 K3 of the compound Bi2Se3 have been reported. An estimate of the heat of formation of the compound BiSe at room temperature has been published.2 Information on the phase relations in the system Bi-Se is available.' In the investigation reported here the following quantities have been determined at 573", 623", and 663°K: 1) the heat of solution at infinite dilution of selenium in bismuth, 2) the heat of mixing of selenium and bismuth in bismuth-rich solutions, 3) the limit of solubility of selenium in bismuth, and 4) the heat of formation of the compound BizSe. These quantities were determined by the addition of selenium to bismuth-rich solutions in a metal solution calorimeter. The determination of the heat of formation at the tem- perature of the calorimeter bath involved the precipitation of the compound from a saturated solution in the calorimeter. 5,6 This method differs from that commonly used which requires the addition of the compound and of a mechanical mixture of its components and yields the heat of formation at the temperature from which the additions are made (273 K EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND CALCULATIONS The solution calorimeter has been described in detail.' Pure bismuth (99.999+ pct) was used as the bath at the start of a run. The calorimeter was calibrated with small amounts of bismuth added from 273°K; the differences of the heat contents of bismuth at 273°K and the temperatures of the baths are listed in Table I. After the calibration, additions of hexagonal selenium (99.999+ pct) were made. Loss of selenium by evaporation was negligible. No unusual experimental difficulties were encountered.9 The differences in the heat contents10 of selenium at 273°K and the temperature of the bath, listed in Table I, were subtracted from the measured heat effects to give the "adjusted heat effects". A second-order approximation to the exact solution of the diffusivity equation corresponding to the pressure build-up of a well producing at a variable rate is derived. This approximation is applicable when the well's shut-in time is larger than the total time elapsed since the well was first produced. The resulting equations are compact in form and easy to use. Thus, the need for Horner's' theoretically precise but rather laborious solution to the above problem is eliminated. In addition, these equations apply where the use of Horner's widely known approximate method is questionable. From a practical point of view, the reported method is best suited for analysis of drill-stem tests and short production tests conducted on new wells. INTRODUCTION The utility of drill-stem and short production tests in reservoir studies has long been recognized by the reservoir engineer. If interpreted correctly they could lead to a wealth of information upon which may depend the success or failure of reservoirs' analyses. Initial reservoir pressure and the average flow capacity are two quantities that are normally sought from a drill-stem and/or a short production test analysis. Pressures are the most valuable and useful data in reservoir engineering. Directly or indirectly, they enter into all phases of reservoir engineering calculations. Therefore, their accurate determination is of utmost importance. The flow capacity kh of the reservoir is indicative of its commercial capability. In addition, it can indicate the presence of a darnaged zone around the wellbore and, thus, the necessity for remedial measures. Of the several methods used to analyze drill-stem and short production tests, Horner's' method is by and large the most common. It applies to an infinite reservoir and or a limited reservoir where the effect of production has not been felt by the boundary. Horner's method makes use of the so-called "point-source" solution of the diffusivity equation. The point-source solution is approximated by a logarithmic function and the superposition theorem is utilized to give the familiar pressure build-up equation where is the shut-in time, q is in reservoir barrels per day and the rest of the symbols conform with AIME nomenclature. Eq. 1 was derived for a well which produced at a constant rate q from time zero to time t and was then shut in. In actuality, such a constant rate of production does not normally obtain. Therefore, a correction must be applied to Eq. 1 to account for the varying rates of production. Horner suggested two methods. The first, which results in a theoretically accurate solution, is rather lengthy and laborious and, thus, it is not suited for routine analysis. The second which has been termed a "good working approximation" is the one used by the majority of the reservoir engineers. In the second method, Eq. 1 is modified by simply introducing a corrected time t, and writing where q is the last established production rate prior to shut-in, and t, is obtained by dividing the total cumulative production by the last established rate. Horner's original paper does not give any indication that this method of correction is based on any theoretical justification. In addition, there is a question as to what constitutes the last established rate. In case of a drill-stem test some engineers use the average rate obtained by dividing the total fluid produced by the total flow time, while others calculate the average rate by dividing the total fluid produced by the last flow-period time. Obviously, different results obtain for the different flow rates used. Because of this, a simple method to the varying-rate case was developed which is theoretically sound and which defines clearly the flow rate and its associated time to be used in the calculations. The final equation arrived at is where q* and t* are a modified rate and time, respectively, and can be easily calculated. In addition, it is shown theoretically that Horner's approximate method, if used for a variable-rate case, gives the correct pressure but would not be expected to give the correct flow capacity. This paper presents the results of a complete reservoir studv designed to determine a sound economic program for the conservation of oil and gas in the Pickton field, Hopkins County, Texas. The Pickton field produces from the Bacon Lime with all indications of the study being that production is predominately by dissolved-gas drive. Calculations of the total ultimate recovery to be expected under primary operations indicated only 16.7 per cent of the oil originally in place would be recovered. This unusually low recovery is due to the type of drive operating and the extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and shrinkage. Results are presented for six plans of returning gas to the reservoir, evaluated to determine (1) comparative recoveries and economics of (a) returning gas at a constant rate by supplementing Pickton gas with extraneous gas during the early portion of the operation, and (b) conventional gas-return operations without using extraneous gas, and (2) the optimum size of compressor plant for each type of pressure maintenance. The over-all economic program considers, for either type pressure maintenance operation. a gasoline plant to process the unusually rich casinghead gas. Since pressure maintenance will disturb equities, pooling of royalties is in the case of Pickton a prerequisite to conservation of oil by this type of operation, both from an economic and legal standpoint. In the event pooling of royalties cannot be achieved, the study considers a gasoline plant to operate under a modified primary production operation which will make the conservation of gas possible. INTRODUCTION The Pickton field, located in Hopkins County, Texas. was discovered in November, 1944. by the completion of Humble's C. D. Nichols 1, in the Bacon lime of the Lower Glen Rose formation, through perforations from 7,888 to 7.896 feet. The well initially produced 50.2 API gravity oil with a gas-oil ratio of 1,350 cubic feet per barrel. Subsurface samples of the reservoir fluid obtained soon after completion of the discovery well showed that the Pickton crude is unique in that it has an extremely high dissolved gas-oil ratio and is subject to very severe shrinkage. Calculations of the future behavior of the Pickton reservoir indicated that ultimate oil recovery by primary operations would be 3,269,000 barrels, representing only 16.7 per cent of the oil in place (19,577,000 stock-tank barrels), and that recovery could be substantially increased by returning the produced gas. The cumulative production of 1,382,694 barrels on November 1: 1947, amounted to 42.3 per cent of the estimated ultimate oil recovery from primary operations. The purpose of this study is to determine and evaluate the optimum program for conservation of oil and gas in the Pick-ton field, including the desirability of conducting gas-return operations and of installing a gasoline plant. In recent years considerable effort has been expended in the search for new ways of drilling into the earth's crust and for improvements of existing methods. A number of novel techniques have been explored such as explosive, flame, electric arc, abrasive jet, chemical, and various percussion-type dri1ls.l Some of the new methods are useful in isolated situations, but rotary drilling continues to be the most versatile and generally economical method for rock drilling. An understanding of rock failure during drilling can lead to improved rotary drilling techniques and to the development of new methods. Experiments 2-4 have shown that rock strength and ductility increase with increasing pressure; therefore, meaningful experimental investigations should be carried out under conditions similar to those encountered at the depths to which oil wells are drilled. The action of a roller-cone bit is not pure rolling in all cases but frequently involves gouging and scraping action. However, vertical penetration of a horizontal rock surface by a single punch has served as a first approximation of the rock/bit tooth interaction during drilling.5,6 In these experiments semi-infinite smooth rock surfaces are indented by steel tools with configurations having various degrees of dullness. Both static and dynamic tests have been investigated; however, static loading provides a good approximation of the loading rates occurring during rotary drilling. As a more realistic approximation to actual drilling conditions, chip generation must also be considered. Recently, studies have been made of indexing or chipping from a bit tooth to a previously formed crater.7-9 The purpose of the present investigation is to study indexed penetrations in greater detail. Fig. 1-A illustrates the general problem. Pittman and Cheatham 10,11 have used plastic limit analysis to study the idealized plane-strain indexing problem for a material having a linear Coulomb-

(written dlscussion ?) .-It is interesting to observe how closely Mr. Hansen agrees with other investigators to the effect that the art of electrolytic zinc has left the realm of mystery. In his introduction, lie has said practically what Thomas French said in his paper "The Future of Electrolytic Zinc. "1 The successful electrolysis of zinc from sulphate solutions has not been an easy matter, and it is only within recent years that the difficult problem of depositing high-grade zinc has been satisfactorily: accomplished on a commercial basis. The principal requisite is. that the electrolyte shall be quite free from certain impurities. The methods by which freedom from these impurities is assured are now very well understood, and with experienced superintendents there is little difficulty in obtaining a high efficiency in that part of the process. When certain underlying principles are recognized, the difficulty encountered in dealing with the filtration of the acid and slimy solutions also largely disappears, although it has been a very serious one to the uninitiated. In the dissolving of the zinc from the roasted ore, there is nothing which any competent chemical' engineer cannot undertake, and any other operations connected with the electrolytic process are either of little or no difficulty, or are common to the retort process. Mr. Hansen also agrees with R. G. Hall's statement in " Some Economic Factors in the Production of Electrolytic Zinc:"2

Fundamental data on the rate of diffusion of boron in austenite and solubility of boron in the a and y phases of iron and steel have been obtained from deboronizing experiments and provide partial explanations for some of the phenomena observed in boron steels. The rate of diffusion of boron is about the same as carbon in austenite. The solubility of boron in austenite at normal heat-treating temperatures is less than 0.001 pct. A partial tentative Fe-B phase diagram in the important low boron concentration ranges and an equation representing the diffusion of boron in austenite are presented. A LTHOUGH a search of the literature revealed ALTHOUGHthat boron diffusion had not been studied quantitatively and systematically prior to 1948, a few qualitative observations which were made by following the diffusion of boron into iron packed in ferro-boron1-3 suggest that boron obeys normal diffusion laws and that the rate of diffusion increases with increasing temperature. The claim of Cornelius and Bollenrath1 that boron does not appear to influence the rate of carbon diffusion has recently been substantiated by Wells, Batz, and Mehl.4 Calculations based on data from the paper by Campbell and Fayv indicated that the diffusion coefficient (D) for boron in iron at 900°C is approximately 3x10 sq cm per sec; a value of 2x10-7 sq cm per sec at 1038°C has been reported by Digges et al in connection with decarburizing experiments on a commercial boron steel containing 0.43 pct C. During the period 1948 to 1950 several diffusivity constant (D) values for the diffusion of boron in the y phase of iron and steel and a number of solubility values for boron in both a and y phases were reported. It was concluded tentatively as a result of Metals Research Laboratory studies that D values for boron in y and a phases are about the same as for carbon in the comparable phasesa and that carbon up to 0.4 pct did not affect the rate of diffusion of boron in y iron above 1000°C within the limits of experimental error. Whether saturation of the y or a phases with carbon would significantly affect rates of diffusion of boron through them was then and still remains in doubt. The best estimate of Q (activation energy) was reported to be about 25,000 cal, somewhat lower than that for carbon in y iron. The solubility of boron in y iron at 1000°C was thought to be higher than 0.004 pct B but not as high as a more recent analysis of available data shows it to be. The solubility of boron in a iron at 700°C was reported to be 0.0004 pct B, but it would not have surprised the authors if the true solubility value is actually lower than this. Breaks in diffusion curves which were not understood when first obtained prior to 1950 have now been recognized as indicating solubility limits, and these are included in the present paper. Experimental Procedure Two methods were employed in an effort to determine diffusion coefficients (D) for boron in austenite. Early experiments involved the use of welded couples prepared in accordance with the procedure of Wells and Mehl,' but when the results of these experiments proved to be unsatisfactory for calculating D values, studies were continued by means of deboronizing experiments. In both cases, boron analyses following the diffusion anneal were carried out spectrographically and all D values were computed using the Grube solution of Fick's law. The precision of the spectrographic method used proved to be about equal to that reported by Corliss and Scribner" —average deviation from the mean about 5 pct of the amount present when the boron content is 0.003 pct. Concentration-penetration curves obtained from spectrographic analyses of welded couples generally indicated that practically no boron was transported across the weld interface during the diffusion anneal. (Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) SOME statements have already been made to the Institute in reference to the cost of other departments of the above-named works, and some details have been given in tabular form.* For the purpose of the present paper it may be sufficient to say that this converting works is made up of three buildings, a cupolahouse, an engine-house, and a converting-house. The machinery and fixtures comprise two blowing-engines, two pressure-pumps, two five-ton converters, five hydraulic cranes, three pig-iron cupolas, four spiegel cupolas, two lifts for the cupolas, together with the usual arrangements of smaller parts. Every effort was made in the construction to combine efficiency of operation with durability, and the general course of the operation of the works during two and a half years seems to warrant the belief that the large outlay has been fully justified. • In the accompanying tabular statement all items on vouchers less than ten dollars, and all freight items have been omitted. * See Transactions of the. Higher coal quality is being recognized in potentially lowering the cost of power as measured at the bus bar. Assessment of potential coal supplies for most power plants is now going beyond buying at the lowest delivered fuel cost. It is now taking into consideration other factors, such as handling, storage, pulverization cost, boiler fouling, post combustion cleanup, and waste disposal costs. New measurements of quality are being considered now by those producing and those consuming the fuel by assessing numerous variables in the total fuel cycle to achieve the lowest possible power costs.

N EARLY 1300 members and guests crowded the halls of the Engineering Societies Building during the winter meeting of the Institute just closed, and more than 600 attended the banquet. In variety of program, quality of papers, interest in discussion, and brilliance of social features, the meeting maintained the high reputation of the past. Nothing elaborate in the way of excursions was attempted, experience having proved that February weather in New York is much too uncertain to warrant extensive field trips. A sight-seeing journey up the Hudson to the Bear Mountain bridge was, however, made despite the snows of the week before and the week after. The annual business meeting, while attended by a minority of the members in the building, was marked by the display of keen interest in the work and called out several interesting discussions. The excellent reports of the committees that had organized their work and directed it along definite lines, emphasized the need of funds with which to support assistants or Fellows who shall correlate and put to the highest use the facilities of the Institute in research along technical lines. This thought was developed at the banquet by the retiring president, J. V. W. Reynders, and it is expected that the Directors will take early steps to collect a fund for this purpose. The number of the individual sessions was too great and the papers and discussions too numerous to permit mention here of all the features of inter- est. A general review only follows. The papers and detailed discussions will be printed and sent to members as promptly as possible.

The remarkable phenomena exhibited by the aluminum alloy known as duralumin were discovered during the years 1903-1911 by A. Wilm1,2 and have been described by him and by others. 3 4 5 6 The unusual feature of this alloy is the fact, as was shown by Wilm, that it can be hardened quite appreciably by quenching from temperatures below its melting point followed by aging at ordinary temperatures, which consists merely f allowing the material to stand at these temperatures. The hardness is not produced by the quenching alone but increases during the period of aging, which may be from one to three days. Cohn3, 5 gives data showing the increase of hardness of duralumin during aging, after quenching in water from about 450° C. Upon annealing, the alloy so hardened by aging is softened exactly as is hardened steel. The composition of this alloy usually varies within the following limits: Copper, 3 to 4.5 per cent.; magnesium, 0.4 to 1.0 per cent.; manganese, 0 to 0.7 per cent.; aluminum, balance; iron (as impurities), 0.4 to 1 per cent.; silicon, 0.3 to 0.6 per cent. Its density is about 2.85. It is used only in the forged or rolled condition. This alloy has been produced for some years commercially and is in demand for the fabrication of parts for which both lightness and strength are required, such as for aircraft. Its tensile strength will average 50,000 to 60,000 lb. per. sq. in. (3515 to 4218, kg. per sq. cm.) after appropriate heat treatment, such as that described by Wilm.

INTRODUCTION Direct reduction of iron ores has unquestionably become established as an important step in the worldwide steelmaking industry. The history of this development has been long and fraught with difficulty. In 1800, Champlain suggested the direct reduction concept using carbon and a shallow hearth vessel. Roughly 100 years later, Jones attempted a commercial process using carbon and producer gas in a rotary kiln. During the early years of this century, numerous attempts were made to start commercial direct reduction plants using such processes as Hoganas, Wiberg, Krupp-Renn, and others. Most of these were short lived, being abandoned due to a variety of technical and economical factors. Today, however, a new generation of direct reduction processes has emerged. We enter 1977 with at least 40 commercial plants in operation using 15 processes in 14 countries. These plants have combined total annual capacity of roughly 10 million tonnes of direct reduced product. Many articles have been written, and projections made, concerning the future growth potential for direct reduction. As is al- ways the case with projections, the numbers vary, but the outlook does not. Anyone who participated in the years of effort that have gone into this field of endeavor should be excited and justly rewarded by noting the shape of the curve in Figure 1.

MUCH work has been done dealing with the effect of mechanical stress on electrode potential in an electrochemical system. The contradictory nature of the experimental results indicates the complexity of the problem although thermodynamic considerations show that a simple relationshir, should exist. In those systems where a gas was the electromotive active substance satisfactory agreement between theory and practice has been found. Des Coudres' found this to be so even when the active substance of the electrode, in this case mercury, was in the liquid state. In contrast, attempts to correlate theory and experiment for the solid state have met with a very limited success. The early workers in this field, Andrews,2 Walker and Dill3 used iron, certainly one of the most reactive of metals. Others have made use of less active metals such as copper and nickel. Recently Fryxell and Nachtrieb4 investigated the electrochemical behavior of gold and silver under both tensile and compressive stresses and concluded that it was doubtful whether true stress potentials could ever be measured. Much of the lack of success to measure the thermodynamic stress potential can be ascribed to the presence or formation of a complex film on the metal surface in contact with the electrolyte. Further, the theoretical stress potential is very small and therefore difficult to measure directly. Thus the calculated emf between a 24 B & S gage cold-drawn copper wire stressed with a weight of 1 kg and an unstressed portion of the same wire is only 2.60 X 10"7 volts. This is very small compared to that which can be produced by chemical reactions at the metal electrolyte interface which in turn can be so large as to mask completely the stress potential. Hence in this type of measurement all chemical side effects must be eliminated or reduced as much as possible. It was for this reason that the system copper-sodium chloride solution was selected for study. INSTRUMENTATION In the many preliminary experiments conducted, two major difficulties were encountered. The first was to measure the small electro-potentials to be expected and the second to obtain a suitable electrode surface. The conventional potentiometric method was found to be unsatisfactory for measuring the small emf expected. However, by using an L & N No. 2290 galvanometer having a resistance of 915 ohms consistent measurements were possible. The reference electrode was always the unstressed one made from the same sample of wire. The steady current flow was approximately 10-8 amp. Lewis and Randell5 have stated that for currents of the order of 10-8, if there is no sensible polarization, the measured emf may be taken as a reversible one. To check the galvanomenter readings an alternative method was devised to measure the potential difference between the wires. This involved a Liston-Falb d-c breaker amplifier model 10, an L & N k-2 potentiometer and a moving-coil galvanometer having a sensitivity greater than 0.1 µv (microvolt) per mm. To increase further the output voltage of the amplifier a d-c amplifier, model B. L.-932 was introduced into the circuit. This amplifier was in turn connected to a Brush recorder which had been calibrated previously by the test signals from the Liston-Falb instrument. These test voltages employed took into account the impedance of the input current. Unfortunately, this method had too low a sensitivity for measurement below 10 µv. Above this value the voltage agreed reasonably well with those obtained directly by the simple galvanometer method. The main advantage of the amplifier setup was that one did not have to wait until no deflection occurred on the galvanometer in the circuit when first exposing the wires to the solu-

THE outstanding fact in connection with dust disease in the United States at present is the growing recognition of its seriousness by state officials and by the more progressive operators of mining, metallurgical and allied industrial plants. The same may perhaps be said of labor in some of its better organized centers, but the average independent non-union workman continues, as of yore, to suffer the toll of disability and even of death from dust inhalation without realization of the source of his ill-being. Progress in the betterment of the handling of sufferers from dust disease and of the conditions creating dust hazards in mining and allied industries is pursuing a course similar to that of the now widespread campaign against accidents, in which the risk is more obvious, more severe, and was naturally recognized. sooner. The coming on of dust disease is generally relatively slow and its immediate effects not infre-quently masked by or attributed to other diseases. Marked exceptions to this general rule have occurred in districts where the dust is particularly pernicious, such as the Rand and Joplin; yet such exceptions, unhappy in themselves, opened the eyes of medical men, and of those in other localities charged with the responsibility for the welfare of industry, to the much more widespread if less spectacular hazard existing from the inhalation of dust in all rock-excavating operations and all industrial operations creating inorganic dust, whether it be crushing and grinding, sand-blast-ing, granite-cutting, or what not. Advancement to date in the United States in prevention and treat-ment has been slow, yet the record shows that quantitative methods for determining the degree of hazard and means for decreasing it were being developed as far back as 25 years ago; and that more rapid progress may be looked for from now on. In 1908, in this country, F. L Hoffman?(1) discussed the mortality from consumption in dusty trades, especially brass foundries; and in 1913 E. R. Hayhurst(2) described the effects of inhalation

Measurements of the 103 yield stress of ordered and disordered poly crystalline Cu ,Au were related to the ordered antiphase domain size determined by resistivity measurements. For undeformed material, a yield stress maximum wa obtained at a critical domain diameter of about 40A. Plastic deformation resulted in a marked increase in the yield stress and electrical resistivity of the ordered alloy compared to the disordered, the strain hardening rate increasing regularly with initial antiphase domain size. Order hardening was accompanied by a sharp reduction in size of the initially large domains. It has been observed that the yield stress of ordered and partially ordered Cu3Au alloy varies sensitively with antiphase domain size aid degree of order.ly2 In addition, ordering of the lattice leads to a marked increase in the strain hardening rate (order hardening) as compared to the rate for the disordered alloy. In the present investigation, changes in the electrical resistivity and yield stress of ordered polycrystalline Cudu with varying initial domain diameters were measured after tensile plastic deformation in order to examine the effect of cold work on the antiphase domain size. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Au-Cu alloy of 99.99 pct purity analyzing 50.85 wt pct Au-balance copper was obtained from the Handy-Harmon Co., N. Y., in the form of 0.061 in. diam drawn wire. Wire specimens 3 in. in length were given the following annealing treatment in nitrogen: 500" for 72 hr, 820" for 15 hr, and 450" for 5 hr, followed by a water quench. The annealing sequence resulted in a completely disordered structure with a grain size of about 0.2 mm. The disordered specimens were then reannealed at 360' in nitrogen for periods varying from 10 min to 150 hr followed by quenching to produce ordered structures with varying domain sizes. The degree of ordering and variation of domain size was followed by electrical resistivity measurements made at room temperature using a low resistance precision Kelvin double bridge apparatus. The specimen resistance was determined over a length of 4.0 cm between two brass knife-edge contacts while the specimen was immersed in an oil bath to minimize temperature variations. In addition, the current flow in the circuit was minimized by a current pulse technique in balancing the bridge in order to avoid heating the specimen. Using a sensitive galvanometer to detect the bridge null, the accuracy of the resistance measurement Wire specimens were plastically strained in tension with an Instron tensile unit at strain rates in the range 5 x 10"5 sec-' to 2 x 10"4 sec-'. Stress and extension data were fed into the Instron chart drive amplifier to obtain the actual stress-elongation curve from which the yield stress at 10"3 strain was determined. The maximum resolution of the apparatus was approximately 50 psi stress and 3 x 104 strain. At various plastic strain levels, deformation was interrupted and the electrical resistivity determined after removing the stress. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 1) Yield Strength of Ordered Cudu. In order to determine the effect of the ordered antiphase domains on the initial yield stress, specimens were prepared with varying domain sizes ranging from zero for 5 completely disordered structure to about lo5A for a completely ordered structure by suitable annealing treatment. Domain sizes were estimated by comparing room temperature electrical resistivity data with the original data of Jones and sykes3 as modified by rdle.' In agreement with previous work, the resistivity varied sensitively with domain diameter and degree of order, decreasing from approximately 11.6 x l0- ohm-cm for the disordered structure to about 5.9 x l0- ohm-cm for ordered domains above 10"3 cm in diameter.
