Perry. vice-president of the Turner Construction Co. and prominent civil engineer of New York City as its new Chairman. He succeeds C. F. Scott, who becomes Chairman of its Committee on Professional Recognition. S. L. Tyler, Secretary of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, succeeds A. B. Parsons as ECPD Secretary. R. E. Doherty is Vice-chairman. C. E. Davies remains as Assistant Secretary, as do R. L. Sackett as Chairman of the Committee on Student Selection and Guidance, O. W. Eshhach as Chairman of the Committee on Engineering Training, and Karl T. Compton as Chairman of the Committee on Engineering Schools.

The Carol concentrator of the Iron Ore Company of Canada was completed in 1962 and through expansions .has become one of the largest iron ore beneficiation plants in the world with a new feed capacity of 147,000 It (149,350 mt) per day. The Carol ore contains specular hematite and magnetite having a bulk density of 166 lb/cu ft (2660 kg/m3) It is crushed to 7 in. (178 mm) for feeding to autogenous mills for subsequent concentration by Humphrey’s s spirals. Mine ore is loaded into 150 It (152 mt) trucks by 10 cu yd (7.65 m3) shovels and then, at a transfer station, is loaded into side-dump rail cars of 100 It (101.6 mt) capacity. Each train is composed of twenty cars and operates completely automatically as it hauls the ore to the primary crushing station, dumps its loads, and returns to the loading station, a 11.5 mile (18.5 km) round trip. The primary crushing station is composed of two 60 in. by 89 in. gyratories installed in 1962 and 1972. Neither crusher has a grizzly ahead of it. Rail cars are dumped into 300 It (305 mt) pockets which contain splitters for spider protection. What few oversize boulders which do not go through the crushers are drilled and blasted. Liners in the dump pocket and the crushed ore pokcet under the crusher are manganese steel. Both crushers are direct driven by 700 hp (5 15 kw) motors, and the hardness of the ore causes them to pull almost their full power. Crushed ore drops into a 160 It (163 mt) pocket equipped with radioactive level control units for low-intermediate, and high level indications. The low level unit stops and starts the apron feeder, the intermediate unit controls the feeder speed, and a high-level reading stops the car dumping. Apron feeders are 72 in. (1. 82 m) wide and are variable speed from 12 to 52 fpm (3. 7 to 15. 8 mpm). They discharge to 60 in. (1.52 m) wide takeaway belts. Crushing capacity, nominal and maximum for each crusher, is 4, 000 ltph (4. 064 mtph) and 4,600 ltph (4,674 mtph). The crusher eccentric is removed by a conventional cart which travels on removable rails. Mainshaft removal and maintenance is done by 65 and 75/10 ton cranes. Mainshaft replacement requires eight hours, a usual time, but concave replacement requires only sixteen hours, a result of a fine maintenance organization. Mantle relining is done at grade next to a repair track. Zinc is used for backing both mantles and concaves. Both the electrical rooms and the dust collectors are located below grade,

Centrifugal force has been used for centuries for separating liquids but machines for doing this are a comparatively recent development. The use of these machines is being extended into many industries but this paper is confined to their use in the oil industry. The centrifugal machine is found at the well where "cut oil" is dehydrated for acceptance by pipe lines; and in the refinery and byproduct plant. In fact, wherever finely divided suspended particles should be removed from an oil, there is a possible use for a centrifugal machine, if the particles have, or can be made to have, a specific gravity different from that of the oil. Centrifugal machines are also used for cleaning fuel and lubricating oils and dehydrating transformer oils. Applications and Results When oil comes from the well mixed with water, it is spoken of as cut oil. Settling often does not remove sufficient water for the oil to be accepted by pipe lines, thus necessitating chemical or other treatment. Centrifuging alone, or following chemical treatment, effectively prepares such oil for pipe lines, as is shown by the following data: WateR, Etc. Wat~R. Etc. In an earlier paper1, the author described a method of interpreting earth-resistivity curves, based on the theoretical investigation of a single horizontal underlying stratum. If the four-electrode system of Wenner is employed, the resistivity in a homogeneous soil is given by the formula where a is the electrode separation and R is the resistance of the earth between the two inner electrodes. If the earth is not perfectly homogeneous, the application of this formula gives an apparent specific resistance varying with the electrode separation. In the special case of the single horizontal underlying stratum, there is a surface layer of thickness h and resistivity p1 and a lower layer, extending to infinity, of resistivity pz. It has been shown by Lancaster-Jones2 that the apparent resistivity obtained by an application of equation 1 is related to the true resistivities, the depth h and the electrode separation a by an expression of the formhere pa is the apparent resistivity and F is a function (actually an infinite series), of the ratio h/a, and a reflection coefficient k = (p2 — p1)/(p2 + p1). For given values of h/a and k, the right-hand side of equation 2 can be calculated, and curves drawn showing the relationship between pa/p1, h/a and k. Such a set of curves for the case when p1 > p2 is given in Fig. 1. When pl is less than pz it is more convenient to use conductivity instead of resistivity. Hence, if oa = the apparent conductivity = lip, and a1 = the conductivity of the upper layer = l/pl, it follows that GeophyGical prospecting by earth-resistivity methods is frequently applied to investigation of structural problems in geology. Fig. 1 indicates a scheme of the general arrangement used in these methods of measurements. The battery (or generator) E is connected with two "current electrodes" I1 and I2. The current of intensity J, supplied by this battery, passes through the earth between these elcc- trodes. A potential difference U will be measured between two other electrodes V1 and Vz, called "potential electrodes." The sand and gravel industry is the largest nonfuel mineral industry in the nation. In 1981, the production of sand and gravel totaled 755 million tons valued at $2.3 billion. California, which leads the nation with more than 110 million tons, together with Alaska, Texas, Michigan, and Ohio, account for 36% of the total production in the nation (Table 1). In commercial usage, sand applies to rock or mineral fragments ranging in size from particles retained on a No. 200 sieve (0.074 mm openings) to those passing a No. 4 sieve (4.76 mm openings). Gravel consists of rock or mineral fragments larger than 4.76 mm, ranging up to 88.9 mm (3 ½ -in.) maximum size. The construction industry consumes 97% of the sand and gravel produced; the remainder is sand used for specialized products such as glass (see the chapter on "Silica and Silicon"). Utilization The building industry uses sand and gravel chiefly as aggregate in portland cement concrete, mortar, and plaster; the paving industry uses sand and gravel in both asphaltic mixtures and portland cement concrete. Aggregate is commonly designated as the inert fragmental material which is bound into a conglomerate mass by a cementing material such as portland cement, asphalt, or gypsum plaster. Portland Cement Concrete Aggregates Portland cement concrete consists of sand and gravel surrounded and held together by hardened portland cement paste. Concrete mixes commonly contain 15-20% water, 7-14% cement, and 66-78% aggregate. Sand and gravel used as concrete aggregate have to meet many requirements (Goldman, 1956). Premature deterioration of concrete has been traced in many instances to the use of unsuitable aggregates. Asphaltic Aggregate Asphaltic mixtures used predominantly for paving consist of combinations of sand, gravel, and mineral filler (material finer than 0.003 in.), uniformly coated and mixed with asphalt produced in the refining of petroleum. Except for the addition of mineral filler, sand and gravel used as asphaltic aggregate must meet the same general physical requirements as materials used for portland cement concrete aggregate. General Requirements of Aggregates Construction aggregate has many requirements that are difficult to meet if only unprocessed material from natural deposits is used. The power plant of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. is located near Tyrone, N. M., at 5,950 ft, elevation. It is interesting because it uses the largest stationary Diesel engines in the United States. The general layout of the plant is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The building is of steel-frame construction with hollow-tile walls and corrugated-iron roof; the floor is concrete and all windows have steel frames, making a fireproof building. The building is made to accommodate one more electric generator unit, which is being installed; also two 4,000-cu. ft. air compressors direct-connected to three-cylinder engines with the same size cylinders as the electric units. The power plant consists of two 815-kva., 60-cycle, three-phase, 6,600-volt, 180-r.p.m. generators, direct-connected to five-cylinder, two-cycle Diesel engines; the necessary circulating pumps for cooling water, cooling towers and oil storage tanks. A portion of the power is used in the same building as the generating units to run one of two 200-kw. rotary converters delivering 260-volt direct current, and a 2,500-cu. ft. air compressor, delivering air at 95 1b.-pressure, direct-connected to a 400-hp., 6,600-volt, three-phase synchronous motor. The remainder of the power is used to run a 1,500-ton concentrating mill 3 1/2 miles from the power house, various hoists, pumps and motors about the mines and the lighting and water-works of the town of Tyrone. The direct current is used for electric traction in the mine, also to run hoists and motors that were installed before the new power plant was built. Due to the large hoists that take starting peaks of 250 kw. and the 10-ton electric locomotive that takes at times 150 kw., the load is extremely variable, as shown in Fig. 3. THE WORK OF THE DRILLER and of the oil geologist is seriously handicapped by the impossibility of actually seeing what is going on inside a borehole as it is being drilled. Visual information of the position and condition of the casing, and of the characters and attitudes of strata passed through would be of inestimable benefit. The best substitute for putting a periscope down a hole is the taking of photographs of its interior at points where information is desired. An apparatus for this purpose has been constructed by Dr. Thomas Reinhold, of Heemstede, Holland, and one instrument of his design has been put into practical use by the Geological Survey of The Netherlands in searching for water. To the best of our knowledge, this instrument has not been applied to oilfield problems, although the possibility has been mentioned in the one or two brief notices of the camera which have appeared in the literature.' The purpose of presenting this description of the instrument, with some examples of its work, is to suggest that it might be adapted to serve a variety of useful purposes in American oilfields, and with the hope that discussion will bring out any modifications necessary to make the apparatus more valuable to drillers and geologists.

In presenting this paper to the Institute I beg to mention, first, the results which I have obtained and the apparatus which I have employed, and to follow this with a brief description of the steps by which I hare perfected this process. My present mode of testing is as follows: I obtain, either from the furnace or from the finished product in any stage in which it may chance to be, a small test-piece, usually about 3/4 of an inch square by 3 1/2 inches in length. I place this test-piece upon the poles of an ordinary electro-magnet, for about one minute, and thus magnetize it to its extreme limit. I then place it upon an indicator (which I will shortly describe), on which indicator there is already placed a piece of steel of similar form which has been magnetized in the same manner, the percentage of carbon of this second piece being definitely known. I then, by means of a scale, which forms part of the indicator, marked in degrees of carbonization, read the exact percentage of carbon contained in the piece under examination. My apparatus consists of an ordinary electro-magnet, connected with a suitable battery of moderate power, by which I magnetize the pieces as before described, and of an indicator which consists of a magnetic needle suitably mounted or suspended, so that it is free to deviate a few degrees only from the zero point, and having a rest, which is used to check the vibrations when in use, and to support its weight when not in use. At a right angle to the natural position of the needle I have a scale about 3 feet long, the zero point of which coincides with the natural position of the needle. This scale is marked in each direction from the zero point in degrees of carbonization. IT is now generally recognized that the gravitational method of geophysical surveying is a valuable aid in elucidating the geological structure of the subsoil and enables the practical geologist to deduce the presence of useful deposits. The particular suitability of the torsion balance to the location of large and important subterranean structures has given rise to a wide application of this method by many of the important oil companies in their search for future supplies, and so intense have been these efforts that little has been heard of the method in other connections, with the exception of occasional references to its application in the location of hidden deposits of metallic ores, salt and lignite, and a number of accounts of its use in the elucidation of geological structures. Its success in the location of salt domes is well known, and establishes it as one of the most important of the geophysical methods, especially for the indirect location of oil. In the British Isles, however, no large occurrence of oil is likely to be revealed, and here the practical application of the gravitational method has been restricted almost entirely to the search for ores. This type of survey possesses well marked characteristics, and presents a gravitational problem that has necessitated the development of a special and probably unusual plan of campaign, full details of which it is hoped will shortly be published. The problems and difficulties encountered in this work are of necessity fundamentally related to those met with in the search for oil by means of the torsion balance, but they also possess several special and distinctive features which undoubtedly differentiate them from the obstacles confronting the oil prospector, and which call for special consideration and treatment.

Y.-In the historical part of the development of the caving system discussed by Mr. Blackner, I notice the absence of one man's name, Charles Henroten. Mr. Henroten used the caving system in South Africa in the. Kimberly mines, and realized from his work there that ground would cave when properly prepared. I think it is due him that his name should be mentioned in connection with an exposition of this system in America.

The writer has carried on experimental work for several years with respect to the simultaneous dissolution of gold by cyanide and the adsorption of the dissolved gold on activated charcoal in ore pulps, followed by the recovery of the charcoal by flotation. The results of this experimental work have been sufficiently encouraging to suggest a new process based on the principle of simultaneous dissolution and adsorption of gold, applicable to certain ores and tailings that cannot be treated to advantage by countercurrent decantation or filtration. Applications for patents have been filed and The Dorr Company, Inc. has the exclusive right to license the use of the process. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a process, state its possible advantages and immediate field, and give some results obtained on a laboratory scale. Early Experimental Work In the early stages of the experimental work attempts were made to precipitate soluble gold from cyanide solutions with zinc and aluminum in ore pulps followed by flotation of the precipitated gold, but since the results were not promising enough to continue with these precipitants attention was directed to carbon. The first experiments with carbon comprised the addition of cyanide and alkali to the ore pulp, the addition of carbon at or near the end of the dissolving period, and the recovery of the carbon by flotation. With this method of procedure the assumption was made that carbon functioned as a precipitant of gold from cyanide solutions and as such should be added as are other precipitants, including zinc and aluminum; namely, at the end of the dissolution period. The assumption was then made that carbon functioned as an adsorbent, and that if such assumption proved to be correct, it could be added with success to the ore pulp at the time of adding the cyanide. The first experiment along this line was successful in that the feasibility of the dissolution of gold by cyanide and the simultaneous extraction of the dissolved gold by carbon in ore pulps was demonstrated, at least with respect to such treatment on a laboratory scale.

In view of the great interest shown in the oil possibilities of Kentucky, one is impressed with the paucity of reliable literature on the oil fields of the state. A few brief reports by the Federal and State Geological Surveys are about the only reliable data available. When the estimated production figures, for 1918, are published by the U. S. Geological Survey, they will show a revival of the oil industry in the Blue Grass State during the past half decade. There will also be an increase in the production for 1919 and 1920, at least. Although as an oil-producing state Kentucky is small, compared with some of the other oil states, the present production and the area of undrilled proved territory is large enough to classify it as one of the important oil states of the Union. This paper will be confined to the Irvine District and the immediately adjoining areas which have been prospected with varying success. The Corniferous limestone or Irvine sand is the oil-producing formation in the area discussed. In my divisional nomenclature, the Irvine District includes the Irvine field, which extends from the town of Irvine eastward toward Campton; the Big Sinking area, which joins and lies to the south of the eastern part of the Irvine field; the Beattyville area, which lies to the north and northeast of the town of that name and joins the Big Sinking area; and the Ross Creek pool, which lies to the southwest of the big production and across the Kentucky River. Except for the Ross Creek pool, the main producing area is bounded on the east by the L. & E. R. R. and on the west and south by the Irvine Branch of the L. & N. R. R. Winchester and Lexington form the gateways and Torrent on the east, Irvine on the west, and Beattyville on the south are the principle entrances to the main fields. Evelyn, on the L. & N. R. R., south of Irvine, is the point of entrance to the Ross Creek area. Geology The geology of the Irvine District is very simple. The rock formations with which the oil man should acquaint himself lie between the lower measures of the Pennsylvanian sandstones and shales and the Devonian or Corniferous limestone, or Irvine formation. Only a very brief description of these formations will be given, as they have been described fully by E. W. Shaw.'

Solutions to the diffusion equation for a line source located anywhere in a region bounded by a circular discontinuity are presented. Such solutions follow automatically from the Green&apos;s function presented by Jaeger.4 Petroleum industry applications of this problem would include transient compressible fluid flow in porous media bounded by a discontinuity. Since several recent papers have treated the subject in less general form, it would appear that many workers in this area of the petroleum industry are not aware of Jaeger&apos;s work. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM In several trearments1,2,3 of the transient flow of compressible fluids in porous media it was convenient to consider a region to be bounded by a circular discontinuity. In such a region (Fig. I), the properties in Region 1, r < a, are constant but different from the properties in Region 2, r > a. Hurst, l using the Laplace transform, obtained solutions for a line source located in the center of such a porous medium. The purpose of this work is to point out that a much earlier paper by Jaeger4 presents the solution for a line source located anywhere inside the discontinuity. The assumption is made that a line source may be used to approximate a well. In the following material it is convenient to use the terms source and well as being equivalent; however, the reader should remember the distinction in applications. AN increased demand for brown iron ore in the Birmingham district during the past 18 months has caused renewed activity both in prospecting and mining these ores. In recent years the production in Alabama has ranged from 41,559 tons in 1932 to 639,351 tons in 1928. During the last 9 years about 83 per cent of the total brown ore produced in the United States has come from Alabama (Tables 1 and 2). PROSPECTING Two methods of prospecting are used in this district: (1) test pits, (2) churn-drilling. Usually there is certain quite definite information on an area to be prospected; some of the indications are float ore suck as small gravel or small and large boulders known as "dornicks” scattered over the surface, and ore exposed by erosion in gulleys and ravines, which have cut or eroded through the overburden. Often these natural erosions furnish an indication of the thickness of the ore and to some extent of the area of the ore body. Deposits of brown ore are very irregular both in thickness and extent. Deposits are often lens-shaped or long narrow leads, some of which may be parallel and separated from one another by sand, clay or gravel. The bottom-the footwall-is also very irregular. This footwall is usually lime clay-disintegrated limestone, locally called "white horse," which usually is found at a depth of 6 in. to 20 ft. overlying the limestone. At some places sand and gravel is found under the ore instead of clay. No ore is found under the lime clay, although often the ore has sunk or slumped and is found in the upper portion of this clay, as at some of the Sloss workings at Russellville. The origin of these ores has been discussed by Major E. C. Eckel and Dr. E. F. Burchard in U. S. Geological Survey Bulletin 400, and recently the latter has done further work on ores in the Russellville district, of which reports undoubtedly will be published.

The Institute of Metals and Iron and Steel divisions of the Institute are then to meet jointly at the Hotel Statler, and the American Society for Steel Treating, the American Welding Society, the Society of Automotive Engineers and the Iron and Steel Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers present carefully planned programs at their respective sessions. The National Metal Exposition will be held on Commonwealth Pier.

The meeting of the Institute of Metals Division was held in Phila-delphia from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, inclusive. On Monday evening preceding the meeting, a dinner was held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel at which many of the former officers of the Division and of the present officers and execu-tive committee were present. The subject of a membership committee was discussed and a motion to appoint such a committee with powers to go over the membership list for the selection of divisional members and to institute plans for additional members was passed. Mr. H. E. Howe and Dr. Johnston of the National Research Council attended the meeting and presented their plans for an Alloys Research Association. Many opinions were voiced as to the practicability of such a scheme and Mr. Howe expressed himself in appreciation of the cooperative thought and efforts given him. On Tuesday morning the Institute of Metals Division joined sessions with the American Foundrymen&apos;s Association and listened to the opening addresses. In the afternoon a boat ride was taken on the Delaware River, visiting the plants of the Cramp Ship and Engine Building Co. and the shipyard of the Emergency Fleet Corpn. at Hog Island. The launching of the boat christened "Afoundria" at 5 p.m. was witnessed by members of the party. The opening technical session was held on Tuesday evening at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel at 8 o&apos;clock. The next session was held at the Ritz-Carlton at 10 o&apos;clock on Wednesday morning and the final session at the same time and place on Thursday morning. The sessions were well attended and the discussion was good. The highly technical nature of some of the papers on the program was of special note. Taken as a whole the meeting was one of the most successful ever held. The follow-ing papers were presented:

Six months out of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut down a multi-million dollar plant besieged with -40°F temperatures and a 40 mph wind. It takes only one man-door improperly latched to feeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later, the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Some important things must be remembered in plant design for cold and remote areas. For one thing, everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore be kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas, on the other hand, must be adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles, for instance, have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50°F, you won&apos;t be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze UP.
