The use of alkyl acid phosphates and their alkali salts as collectors for the uranium minerals brannerite and uranothorite was investigated. In particular a detailed flotation study was carried out using isooctyl acid phosphate as a promoter. Tests were conducted on an Elliot Lake ore analyzing 0.11% U 3 O 8, chiefly as brannerite, and approximately 9% pyrite. Pyrite was floated with conventional reagents; the flotation of brannerite from the sulfide tails was studied to determine the optimum pH and pulp density to employ with isooctyl phosphate. 4 uranium recovery of over 90% was possible with a selectivity index of 8.95 when these tails were floated at 17% solids and a pH of 1.7. The effect of various modifying agents was also investigated. Aluminum sulfate, lactic acid and sodium silicate improved the selectivity of collection yielding selectivity indices of 9.5 to 11.5. Ferric chloride was found to be a depressant for brannerite. A Bancroft ore which analyzed 0.13% U308, and contained uranothorite was also amenable to flotation using isooctyl acid phosphate. The composite uranium concentrate obtained assayed 0.41% U308 at a recovery of 95.3% and a ratio of concentration of 3.24. Previous investigations1,2 on the flotation of brannerite, pitchblende, uraninite and/or uranothorite from various Canadian ores showed that fatty acids, including oleic acid and tall oils, petroleum sulfo-nates and alkyl acid phosphates, were suitable collectors for these uranium minerals. Additional work carried out by the Mines Branch in Ottawa on brannerite ores from the Elliot Lake area3 used the tall oil Acintol FA-1, or FA-2, as a collector. A recovery of 92% of the uranium in a concentrate which contained about 55% of the weight and assayed 0.2% U3O8 was obtained from a feed of 0.1% U308 in this latter instance. Eigeles et a1.4 carried out flotation on pitchblende ores and found that the most promising results were obtained with alkyl acid phosphates and their alkali salts as collectors. Within the homologous series of alkyl phosphates, the best flotation characteristics were displayed by isooctyl phosphates. Further, isooctyl phosphate derivatives were much less sensitive to hardness forming salts than oleic acid, enabling all flotation tests to be made with tap water. This paper describes tests employing alkyl acid phosphates for the flotation of ores containing brannerite and uranothorite. The flotation work described herein was conducted in conjunction with the development of a leaching process for Elliot Lake, Ontario, brannerite ores. In this process pyrite in the ore was concentrated by flotation and roasted, providing sulfur dioxide which was used to produce sulfuric acid in situ in a liquid-solid extraction process. A 40% conversion to sulfuric acid was indicated at a leaching temperature of 80°C; this resulted in the extraction of 93% of the total uranium after a contact period of 6 hr. A rotary kiln was used as a leaching vessel. Preconcentration by flotation was studied in conjunction with the above process to reduce the bulk of solids for leaching and, consequently, capital expenditure. The materials and methods used in this study will be described initially. Then the results will be presented in two sections, the first dealing with the brannerite ore, and the second with the uranothorite. Finally an economic analysis of the results on the brannerite material will be made. MATERIALS AND METHODS The two ore samples examined were from uranium-producing mines. One was a brannerite ore, a uraniferous quartz pebble conglomerate from the Elliot Lake area, which contained 0.11% U3O8, 4.3% S and 4.5% total Fe. Mineralogical studies of similar samples indicated the presence of quartz, microcline, sericite, pyrite and minor quantities of rutile, pyrrho-tite and zircon. The other ore was from a biotite-rich pegmatite in the Bancroft area; feldspar, quartz and biotite formed the major gangue components. PRIOR to 1909 that mountain of porphyry, known as. Sacramento Hill, had remained hardly touched but had always aroused suspicions as to the presence of ore within.. During that year, exploratory work was started by underground methods; drifting and raising continued until 1913. It was proved that a mineralized zone existed, the limits of which had not been determined; so, because of the lower costs of exploratory work and the greater desirability of vertical sections, it was decided to prove the extent of the ore zone by churn drills. Drilling continued until the year 1917, when it seemed almost certain that the horizontal limits of the orebodies had been determined. Ore continued in depth in one direction beyond a point where it was economical to explore by churn drilling; this extension is still being developed by underground methods. The irregularities of the boundaries of the ore zones, together with the variable grades of ore encountered, made it necessary to drill on the corners of 100-ft. squares. Two ore zones were proved, known as the East and West Orebodies. The Sacramento Hill porphyry stock intruded into the Dividend fault. The fault ran roughly east and west with a dip to the south, having pre-Cambrian schists on the north against Paleozoic limestone on, the south. This intrusion was accompanied by a silica breccia on the south periphery, along the limestone contact side. The ore lay in the silica breccia and in the porphyry, some distance from the breccia. No ore was found in the heart of the porphyry mass on the north side, along the schist contact. The West Orebody is elliptic in shape, having a major axis of 1200 ft. (366 m.) and a minor axis of 800 ft. (244 m.); these diminish with depth until, at 300. ft., the axes are 500 ft. and 300 ft., respectively. THE high-alumina clays of Missouri are interesting for several reasons. They are the only sedimentary deposits in North America of first grade (over 70 pct A1,0,) diaspore and boehmite sufficiently large to be mined commercially. Mineralogically, they are composed of diaspore and boehmite in intimate coexistence, but gibbsite, the common hydrated alumina mineral in bauxite and laterite, is absent, or is exceedingly scanty if present.* Therefore, the Missouri high-alumina clays do not represent typical laterization. The physical chemistry leading to their mineral genesis, and the geolbgical setting for their formation, present important problems for scientific study. The origin of the Missouri high-alumina clays has been discussed in earlier reports by Allen1 (1935) and McQueen 8, 9 (1929, 1943). These investigations were made under difficult conditions, however, because no diaspore deposit had been opened where a Paleozoic (Pennsylvanian) rock cover lay undisturbed over the high-alumina clay. The relationship of the clay to only the underlying rocks could actually be observed. Lacking the guidance of critical postdepositional geologic evidence, undue and erroneous emphasis was placed on the postdepositional leaching of the deposits in the theories on the origin of diaspore and boehmite from clay (hydrous aluminosilicates) . With new geologic evidence at hand, a clearer picture can be made for the origin of the Missouri high-alumina deposits. In this paper the geology of a diaspore deposit whose original Paleozoic cover had not been eroded will be described and interpreted genetically. The close relationship of boehmite and diaspore (also with kaolinite and a chloritic mineral), will be established. A theory of origin for the high-alumina clays, consistent with the new data, will be postulated.

NOWHERE can there be found a more misleading statement than the old one that "Iron can be manufactured cheaper in the South." During the past decade ironmakers and users of iron have heard varied and sundry stories of the wonderful resources of the Birmingham district, including abundant ore and coal fields, cheap labor, a wonderful climate and similar industrial Utopian statements. Birmingham represents the major portion of the iron business in the South, acid as Birmingham fares so goes the iron business of the South. The intent of this paper is to shed some light on the actual conditions surrounding ironmaking in the South, especially in the Birmingham, or North Alabama, district. By a presentation of facts it is desired to point out that the "cheap iron" of the industrial South is a thing of the past, primarily because of increased labor cost and because labor is radically different in performance to what it was years ago. Also, because most of the raw materials needed in ironmaking that would be classed better than inferior are gone.

A. G. Crocker and M. Bevis (Battersea College of Technology)— Richman and Richman and conard17 have recently published the very interesting results of their studies on the plastic deformation of Fe-Ni-C martensites and of an Fe-5 wt pct Be alloy. Other work on the range of Fe-Be alloys containing between 16 and 27 at. pct Be has also been reported by Richman." One of the fascinating features of this work is that the materials investigated deform primarily by means of twinning and that several twinning modes are operative in addition to the well-established (112 ) mode of bcc materials The composition planes of these unusual twins were determined using a single-surface analysis and reported as (0131, "{045)" or "{089)", and "{2,3,10)" or "(127)". (It is now thought1' that the "{0,1,13)" habit reported for the Fe-Ni-C alloys'' is more likely to be near "{127)". Although the full twinning elements of these unusual twinning modes could not be determined directly from the experimental results, the authors attempt to deduce the elements by considering twin intersectionslQ and by using the projection technique of Jaswon and Dove.' The basic assumption of their approach is that the (013) habits are truly rational planes but that the other habits are irrational and merely approximated to by the indices quoted above. They thus deduce that the twinning mode describing the (013) habit is either Type I or compound and that the modes describing the other habits are Type 11. This deduction must however be false as all twinning modes in cubic structures obeying the classical orientation relationships of deformation twinning must be compound. Type-I and Type-I1 modes can occur in all of the other crystal systems (indeed in the triclinic system compound modes are not allowed), but in the cubic system only compound modes can arise. This fact, which does not appear to be well-known, fol- lows immediately from the relations between the four twinning elements defining a twinning mode. Thus for a Type-I mode which is uniquely defined by the rational twinning elements K1 = hi and tj2 = vi (i = 1, 2, 3), the Kz qd 771 elements are given by: where the summation convention of the tensor calculus has been adopted. For cubic materials the metrics cij Iand cij reduce to the unit tensors 6ij and 6ij so that we have It is clear from these equations that both ki and ui must take on integral values; i.e., Kz, and ql must be rational, if hi and vi are integers, i.e., if K1 and 77~ are rational. Thus for cubic materials a Type-I mode must degenerate into a compound mode and the same result also arises for Type-II modes. The apparently irrational habits observed by the authors can thus not be explained in terms of Type-I1 twinning if the classical laws of deformation twinning are to be obeyed. In 1891-92 1 was entrusted with the geological survey of part of the large area lying between the Marquette and Menominee iron-ranges in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and extending from the Republic trough on the north, through portions of the valleys of the Michigamme and Fence rivers, to and including the intermediate Felch mountain range on the south. Until a few years back the larger part of this area has been very difficult of access, and much of it is difficult still. The rock-surface is for the most part covered with swamp, forest and glacial deposits of various kinds, and therefore has not invited geological study. For these reasons the district, as a whole, with the exception of the Felch mountain range, remained almost unknown from a geological standpoint until our work in 1892. Our main object was to map the pre-Cambrian rocks, particularly the iron-bearing formations of Algonkian or Huronian age, and to obtain as much information as possible with reference to their sequence and structure, In carrying out this purpose, the use of simple magnetic instruments was found to be of the greatest assistance, and indeed indispensable. In this paper the results of our experience in tracing magnetic rocks by means of the disturbances produced in these instruments, have been brought together in systematic form, with such references to the particular area as are necessary in order to illustrate general principles, with the hope that they will prove useful to other workers in the same region, or in other regions where similar conditions may be encountered. This paper describes the result of a series of experiments run in the laboratory of the School of Mines, Columbia University, during the winter of 1927-28. It shows that the several operating adjustments of a pneumatic table produce effects in the action of a given coal that may be grouped into two classes, viz.: stroke length, speed and rocker-arm angle, which affect longitudinal travel; air supply and table slope (transverse and longitudinal), which determine transverse travel. The magnitude of the effect of the different adjustments varies. Some of the adjustments affect stratification of the bed, both as respects size and specific gravity of the bed components, as well as direction of travel. Operation of a pneumatic table is fundamentally different from that of a wet table in that the former exerts, through the air supplied, a force on the particles upward away from the deck which is lacking on the wet table while, on the other hand, it lacks the positive control over cross travel that is supplied by the wash and feed water. Apparatus The pneumatic table used is shown in Fig. 1. Deck A is 20 by 12 in. and consists of nainsook supported on slats that register with the riffles. Fig. 2 is a photomicrograph of the nainsook used. It shows that the cotton threads average about 0.13 mm. dia. and the apertures about 0.17 mm. The deck carries 12 riffles consisting of wooden strips, 3/16 in. wide and 1/4 in. high, laid parallel to the feed side of the table. The riffles terminate along a line starting on the feed side at a point 11 in, from the mechanism end and running to the corner formed by the coal side and slate end. Taper starts from a line that runs parallel to their terminal line through the junction of the upper riffle with the mechanism end. The height at the terminal line is about 1/32 in. The deck with its supporting slats is carried on a framework consisting of rails A, sloping end rails B, and adjustable metal strips C, which latter permit variation in transverse slope. This frame is enclosed at the edges by means of heavy canvas, indicated in the sketch by wavy lines, which makes a flexible conduit between the deck and the stationary air chamber,

The term "clay" is somewhat ambiguous un¬less specifically defined, because it is used in three ways: (1) as a diverse group of fine-¬grained minerals, (2) as a rock term, and (3) as a particle-size term. Actually, most persons using the term "clay" realize that it has several meanings, and in most instances they define it. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define be¬cause of the wide variety of materials that com¬pose it; therefore, the definition must be gen¬eral. Clay is a natural earthy, fine-grained ma¬terial composed largely of a group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. These minerals are hydrous silicates composed mainly of silica, alumina, and water. Several of these minerals also contain appreciable quantities of iron, alkalies, and alkaline earths. Many defini¬tions state that a clay is plastic when wet. Most clay materials do have this property, but some clays are not plastic; for example, halloysite and flint clay. As a particle-size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum-size particles in the clay-size grade are defined differently on various grade scales, Soil investigators and mineralogists gen¬erally use 2 micrometers as the maximum size, whereas the widely used scale by Wentworth (1922) defines clay as material finer than ap¬proximately 4 micrometers. Some authorities find it convenient to use the term "clay" for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material (Grim, 1968). When used this way, the term includes clay, shale, or ar¬gillite, and some argillaceous soils. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, the term is generally un¬derstood by those who use it. Clay is an abun¬dant natural raw material, and it has an amaz¬ing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. Clays rank among the leading industrial min¬erals in both tonnages produced and total value. Their importance is indicated in Table 1, which lists the 1970, 1971, and 1972 production and values according to the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Ampian, 1972). Adequate reliable statistical data on which to summarize world production of clay are un¬available; this paragraph outlines the world re¬quirements for clay only in a very general way. According to one estimate, the world bentonite production in 1972 was 3.5 million tons (Anon., 1973a), but in the authors' opinion it was prob¬ably at least 5 million tons. The total fuller's earth produced was at least 1.5 million tons and may have been as much as 2 million tons. The total world kaolin production in 1972 was more than 10 million tons. Approximately 7 million tons of this total was produced in only two regions-the Georgia-South Carolina kaolin belt in the United States and the Cornwall re¬gion, United Kingdom. The world's 1972 out¬put of ball clay, which is also produced pri¬marily in the United States and the United Kingdom, was approximately 1.5 million tons or perhaps a little more. The total world fire clay production in 1972 was probably about one and one-half to two times and the miscellaneous clay production three times the United States production. As industrial minerals, clays are a complex group that consists of several mineral commodi¬ties, each having somewhat different mineral¬ogy, geologic occurrence, technology, and uses. The nature of fracture in unnotched tensile and notched tensile sheet and round specimens and V -notched and precracked Charpy-type sheet specimens of both wrought stress -relieved and re-crystallized molybdenum was investigated over the temperature range of -78° to 300°C. The sharp rise in fracture stress, for unnotched tensile samples, as the temperature is increased above the brittleness transition temperature (Tb), is found to be a result of an increase in flow stress due to plastic constraint and an increased strain rate which results from the onset of necking at Tb . Quasi-brittle fracture in notched tensile samples is found to occur when the tensile stress at the elastic-plastic interface, beneath the root of the notch, reaches a maximum critical value, which is independent of test temperature over the range from —78° to 25°C, but dependent on microstructure. In the temperature range between 150° and 300°C, unnotched tensile and notched tensile samples alike are found to fracture by a ductile fibrous tearing process which is discontinuous in nature, as a result of the competition between the processes of tearing, through continued plastic flow, and local work hardening. Results from the V-notched and fatigue-cracked Charpy-type impact tests demonstrate that crack initiation is the governing factor in the low-temperature (-78° to 25°C) fracture process for molybdenum. In recent years, there has been considerable interest, and a commensurate number of investigations, concerning the duc tile-to-brittle transition in refractory metals. There has not developed, however, a satisfactory explanation for the uniaxial tensile fracture-stress transition which accompanies the well-known ductility transition. This matter therefore warranted investigation. In a similar manner, the increased importance of notched tensile strength values in evaluating materials and in design criteria requires a better understanding of the factors which control the fracture behavior of notched tensile samples. In a previous investigation1 of the nature of initial yielding and fracture in notched sheet molybdenum at room temperature, it was suggested that plastic constraint was the controlling factor in governing the fracture behavior of notched samples. The final portion of this investigation was concerned with the fracture toughness of molybdenum. Of particular interest was the comparison of effective surface energies for fracture in V-notched samples with fatigue-cracked, Charpy-type samples in order to ascertain the relative importance of the initiation and propagation phases of the fracture process. MATERIALS AND TEST PROCEDURE Sheet tensile, notched tensile, and V-notched Charpy specimens were prepared from 50-mil, stress-relieved molybdenum sheet.* Half of these specimens were vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1200°C and 7.5 x l0-5 Torr and furnace-cooled to produce a relatively uniform grain size of 0.30 mm diameter. Round notched and unnotched tensile specimens were prepared from warm-rolled and swaged 5/8-in.-diam bar.* These specimens were vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1350°C and 5 x lom5 Torr and furnace-cooled to produce a grain diameter of 0.11 mm. Material analyses in ppm were: C N O H Sheet 290 10 4 1 Bar 50 30 30 2 The unnotched tensile sheet specimens had a 1/4-in. gage width and a 1-in. gage length. The unnotched tensile round specimens had a 9/32-in. gage diameter and a 1-1/4-in. gage length. The sheet and round notch tensile specimens are shown in Fig. 1. All of the notched tensile specimens tested were tandem-notched in order to study the location and mode of fracture initiation. The tandem-notched specimens were carefully machined so that the largest variation in notch depth on a single specimen was 0.001 in. Thus, when fracture occurs, the extent of plastic deformation that exists in the un-fractured notch section is that which exists just prior to fracture. All of the tandem-notched sheet specimens were electrolytic ally polished and chemically etched prior to testing. The V-notched Charpy-type specimens machined from the 50-mil sheet material had the standard dimensions of 2.125 in. long, 0.394 in. deep, and a 0.010-in. root radius. The unnotched tensile and notched tensile tests were conducted over the temperature range of -78° to 300°C, in a 10,000-lb Instron Universal Testing Machine, at a constant crosshead speed of 0.020 in. per min. SIZING is the process of separating mixed particles into groups of particles all of the same size, or into groups in which all particles L range between certain definite maximum and minimum sizes. In coal preparation, sizing is generally accomplished by passing the coal over screens. Separation by differential settling in air or water currents has been adapted to the special field of separating very fine sizes, and these processes are in commercial use to a relatively small extent in the coal industry. Separation with screens is a very old industrial practice. Agricola 1 described the use of screens for ore treatment in the middle ages. In the literature of the British coal industry references were made to the screening of coal as early as 1589, but the practice of extensive sizing for the market did not become general until the last half of the nineteenth century. In America, the practice of sizing developed first in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, beginning with the use of rakes2 in the mine working places to recover coarse coal. This mining procedure left the fines in the mine. Preparation outside the mine started with the installation of stationary cast-iron plates with 4 to 6-in. square holes. The run-of-mine coal was dumped upon the platforms, the large pieces of rock were picked out by hand, and the large lumps of coal were broken with hammers. The term "breaker," which still applies to the anthracite-preparation plant, originated with this practice, but the term is no longer descriptive of the entire function of the plant. Measurements of the latent heat of transformation from a to 0 titanium were made using a pulse-heating technique. Rapid heating was accomplished electrically by discharging a low-inductance capci-tor hank through a thin-strip specimen. Both high-purity titanium and titanium containing 2700 ppm of 0 were studied. An electrical-resistivity technique and a plot of energy input us temperature rise were used to monitor the phase change. It was concluded that: 1) the latent heat of transformation is 800 i 48 cal per mole; 2) phase change occurred in less than 200 sec; and 3) the percentage phase change that occurs is linearly a function of the energy available for phase change. In addition, this experiment provides a simple and inexpensive method for determining specific heat of electrical conductors over large temperature ranges. The chief advantages of this technique over past pulse-heating experiments are: 1) static measurements of capacitor-bank voltage capacitance and specimen resistance can be made quickly and accurately to determine the energy supplied to the specimen; 2) the specimen is heated so rapidly (10 µ sec) that there is no appreciable heat loss during the heating. THE purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of the capacitor bank as a tool for basic experimental investigations and to determine the rapid phase-change kinetics of titanium. The capacitor provides a number of unique properties: 1) rapid heating rates in the order of l09oC per sec can be obtained; heating rates as slow as l04oC per sec are available by merely adding a given amount of inductance to the circuit; 2) the energy input can be precisely determined and can be varied from several joules to millions of joules, depending on the bank capacitance and voltage; 3) the specimen can be heated uniformly through the thickness and length or non-uniformly, as desired; 4) the apparatus is simple and inexpensive and can be easily altered; 5) the form of the specimen can be wires, sheets, foils, rods, and cylinders; 6) there is great precision in the timing of events; 7) this technique may be readily used in conjunction with rapid cooling.

The Alligator Ridge Project is owned jointly by Amselco Minerals Inc. and Occidental Minerals, with Amselco being the operator. It is the latest of Nevada' s gold heap leaching operations , having gone into operation in October of 1980 after a design and construction period of only seven and one-half months. Alligator Ridge is located about 77 km (48 miles) northwest of Ely, Nevada. Three separate but adjacent ore bodies will be mined: Vantage I, II and III. The first lies virtually at the surface and is totally oxidized; the second is somewhat deeper and contains some carbonaceous material; and the third is at the lowest horizon and contains substantial carbonaceous ore. The ore is a Carlin- type siltstone which has been silicified, especially at depth, and contains finely disseminated free gold. Exploration drilling on Alligator Ridge resulted in the defining of an ore reserve of about 4.54 million mt (5 million st) averaging 4. 12 g Au per mt (0. 12 oz Au per st). A pilot heap leaching program was run during 1979. Because of the high content of fine material in portions of the ore body, one test heap of 5,000 tons was leached, after being crushed to 19 mm (314 in.), in the conventional manner using cyanide and caustic while a second heap of 2,500 tons of ore was agglomerated with cement before leaching. Results of this work were reported at the 1980 American Mining Congress meeting by Paul Chamberlin (see Bibliography). The test work clearly indicated the superior leaching qualities of the agglomerated ore, and the plant was designed on this basis. Run-of-mine ore is crushed in an open-air crushing plant using a jaw crusher followed by two cone crushers, one standard and one shorthead. Provision was made to bypass the shorthead when the ore is wet from rain or snow. Crushed ore at 19 mm (314 in.) size is mixed with cyanide solution and cement, with the ratio of the latter to the ore being 2 to 5 kg per mt (4 to 10 lb per st). The resulting moisture content is about 870, and the fines are effectively bound to the coarse particles so that migration of the fines in the heap does not take place during leaching. For agglomeration, Amselco uses a rotating drum 2. 75 m 0 by 6 m long (9 ft 6 by 20 ft). For the same agglomeration, Candelaria uses three "grasshopper" conveyors, with introduction of caustic- cyanide solution at the conveyor transfer points. Provision was made for future addition of cement slurry at these same points.

TIIE electron microscope techniques and their application to magnesium alloys that are to be discussed in this paper are the result of research at The Dow Chemical Co. over the past three years. The view- point underlying the work is not wholly metallurgical, but has evolved through a variety of problems related to the physics and chemistry of surfaces. It can be said that the interest and stimulus were closely associated with a desire to employ effectively the electron microscope in research concerning the properties of solids as related to their physical structure. Only a portion of this work will be described here, and, consequently, many points of interest and debate are of necessity either only briefly recognized or are completely omitted. As has been pointed out by Desch,1 a great deal of the knowledge of the structure of metals has been obtained through microscopic studies of the surfaces of metallic specimens prepared in a particular manner. This information, when added to that obtained by means of thermal, electrical, X-ray, dilatometric and other methods, has been of great value both from a theoretical and a practical view- point. With the introduction of new instruments such as the electron diffraction camera and the electron microscope, it would be expected that still more information could be obtained. These two instruments have in many instances been very effective when directed toward the investigation of metallic surfaces, provided the proper methods of surface preparation were employed. Experience shows that the problems of surface preparation greatly limit the general application of these instruments to metallographic studies. It was found necessary to discard the standard metallographic procedures in applying the electron microscope to magnesium alloys and to work out new methods, which were required to satisfy certain conditions. These methods are unique to magnesium only in the specific chemical reactions occurring during etching. The presentation of the methods and results will be ordered as follows: I. Mechanical inclusion, electrophoretic deposition, and adsorption were studied as mechanisms for code-position of aluminas present in copper-plating electrolytes as an insoluble disperse phase. Mechanical inclusion was not a significant factor. That codeposi-tzon of aluminas by an electrophoretic mechanism was unlikely was substantiated by measurements of the potential of the aluminas. The alumina content of the deposits was studied as a function of the pH of the bath. These tests in conjunction with sedimentation studies demonstrated the absence of an isoelectric point for the alutninas over the pH range examined. Thiourea in the electrolyte (a substance known to be adsorbed on a copper cathode during electrodeposition) affected the amount of alumina in the electrodeposit. However, no adsorption of thiourea on aluminas in aqueous dispersions was detected. If it were possible to produce a dispersion-hardened alloy of copper and alumina by electrodeposition, an alloy possessing both strength and high conductivity at elevated temperatures might be anticipated. Investigation of the mechanism of codeposition of aluminas with copper was undertaken with the hope that knowledge of the mechanism would aid in the development of such an alloy. The word "codeposit" here does not necessarily imply an electrolytic phenomenon but rather that the materials codepositing, the various aluminas, are transported to and embedded in the electrodeposited copper by some means. Mechanical inclusion in electrodeposition implies a mechanism of codeposition which is wholly mechanical in nature; the only forces acting on a particle are gravity and contact forces. Such a particle is presumed to be electrically inert and incapable of any electrical interaction with electrodes in an electrolytic plating bath. Processes for matrices containing a codeposited phase by electrodeposition from a bath containing a disperse insoluble phase frequently state that code-position is caused by mechanical inclusion.10,2,12 If settling, i.e., gravity, be the controlling mechanism for codeposition of aluminas, then assumptions may be made that 1) the content of alumina in the electrodeposit should be enhanced by increasing the particle size, 2) the geometry of the system, that is, the disposition of the cathode surfaces relative to the di- rection of the falling particles, should affect the alumina content of the electrodeposit, 3) in geometrically identical systems the chemical composition of the electrolyte employed should exercise no effect on the alumina content of the deposit, that is, the alumina content should be the same in all cathode deposits irrespective of bath composition. A bent cathode19 evaluates the clarity of filter effluent in electroplating baths by comparing the roughness of the deposit on the vertical surface with that on the horizontal surface. Two difficulties are inherent in this technique: 1) the current density on the horizontal portion of the cathode would be substantially greater than that on the vertical surface; 2) should the deposit obtained be rough, projections on the vertical face could act as horizontal planes and vitiate the relationship between the vertical and horizontal surfaces. Bath composition should have no substantial effect on the alumina content of the deposit. Two different electrolytic baths were employed. They possessed variant specific conductances and substantially different pH ranges. The experimental tanks were rectangular Pyrex battery jars 6 in. wide by 3 1/4 in. long by 9 3/4 in. deep. The cathodes were stainless steel 316 sheet of 0.030 in. thickness, cut to 7.5 by 1.75 in. and bent at right angles to form an L-shaped cathode whose horizontal surfaces measured 1.75 by 3.0 in. All edges and vertical surfaces were masked with Scotch Elec-troplaters Tape No. 470. The anodes were electrolytic cathode copper 9 in. high by 2.25 in. wide by 0.5 in. thick. To eliminate inordinately high current densities on the projecting edge of the cathode, the anode was masked 1 in. above and below the projected line of intersection of the cathode with the anode. The exposed area of the anode was equal to that of the cathode, providing both with equal average current densities. The agitator in the cell was of Pyrex glass and positioned so its center line was equidistant from cathode and anode, and a plane passed horizontally through the center of the blade would be located equidistant from the bottom of the cathode and the bottom of the deposition tank. The assembled apparatus is depicted in Fig. 1. Hatched areas on anode and cathode represent the area of the electrodes wrapped with electroplaters tape. MATERIALS The chemicals were copper sulfate—CuSO4 • 5H2O— technical powder (Fisher Scientific Co.). Spectro-graphic analysis showed substantial freedom from antimony, arsenic, and iron. Traces of nickel were present.

The present work has been done in an endeavor to correlate and complete the data on the constitution of alloys of zinc with other common metals, dealing exclusively, however, with the zinc-rich alloys in which the zinc content is between 90 and 100 per cent. This investigation has included the systems lead-zinc, cadmium-zinc, iron-zinc, copper-zinc, aluminum-zinc, nickel-zinc, manganese-zinc, cobalt-zinc, tin-zinc, and magnesium-zinc. The important ternary system zinc-lead-cadmium and the zinc corners of other ternary systems have been investigated in connection with this work but will not be dealt with here. Zinc does not form a single homogenous zinc-rich solid solution over any considerable range of concentration with any of the metals mentioned. A limited range of solid solubility is said, by previous investigators, to occur in several cases and certain effects on the properties of zinc are attributed (with varying degrees of consistency among different writers) to the presence of certain other metals dissolved in zinc. The increasing use of rolled zinc and the possibilities offered by zinc as a casting alloy in certain fields have made it essential to determine precisely these equilibrium relationships. In carrying out this investigation reliance was placed chiefly on two methods, conductivity measurements and microscopic analysis. The first method proved valuable in determining the existence and extent of solid solubility. The second method stands alone as a means of determining structural characteristics and supplements the first method in the measurement of solid solubility. The scleroscopic hardness of all conductivity specimens was measured partly for its value from the point of view of mechanical properties and partly as a check on the conductivity curves in indicating the limits of solid solubility. No hardness curves are included in this paper, for in no case were they important in arriving at the constitution of any system. THOUGH at an earlier period brief studies had been made by the Lehigh Navigation Coal Company Inc., it was not until 1924 that J. B. Warriner, then general manager, called for a comprehensive study of timber treatment, treating solutions, and related operations. Because of the impossibility of procuring accurate costs and other pertinent treating data, the American Wood Preserving Co. agreed to treat a car of mine timber at the Port Reading plant of the Reading Railroad. Fig. I shows the treating data collected at the treating plant on this timber, which was installed in two of the Lehigh mines in 1925. In the latter part of 1925, a survey of the tunnels and gangways of the company's Panther Valley mines was made to determine the proportion of gangways or tunnels timbered, cause of timber failures, approximate life of the average wood set and the approximate percentage of treated timber that it would be profitable for the company to use. Results of this survey appear in Table I. Because of the high percentage of timber that gave evidence of failure by rot, as noted in Table I, and a further study of the life of the sections where timbering was necessary, it was deemed advisable to fill 25 per cent of the yearly gangway timber requirement with treated timber. Quantities and Treatments OF Treated Timber Purchased In the early days of the program, none of the large treating companies would accept orders for small quantities of treated timber and the company was compelled to state the quantity of timber it would require at each operation in each month of the year. Table 2 is an example of the tabulation given to the various treating companies to assist them in making a yearly bid on the minimum quantity of timber required by the company during the year 1931. A bill of timber was calculated for each car, the weight of which would be between the minimum and maximum weight permitted for railroad-car loading. The treating company was paid for timber upon delivery at the operation specified.
