THAT neither the Reconstruction Finance Corp. nor its subsidiary, the Metals Reserve Corp., are in competition with private enterprise was stressed by Charles B. Henderson in an informal talk before the N. Y. Section, A.I.M.E., on Sept. 23. Among other things, the speaker stated that the R.F.C., since its establishment, had authorized loans of $12,000,000, of which over $8,775,000 has actually been distributed. Of this amount, over $6,600,000 has been repaid. None of this money was appropriated by Congress, the sole assistance from that body being the initial authorization of $500,000,000 capital stock.

THE Institute assembled on Tuesday evening, October 24th, in the hall of the Franklin Institute, Mr. Frank Firmstone, Vice-President, in the chair. Mr.. J. Price Wetherill, of Tremont, Pa., read a paper on An Outline of Anthracite Coal Mining in Schuylkill County, Pa. The paper was discussed by Messrs. Coxe, Rothwell, Heinrich, Harden, and Symons. The second session was held on Thursday evening. Mr. A. L. Holley, Chairman of the International Committee, appointed by the Institute to consider the nomenclature of iron and steel, offered the following report of the committee, signed by all the members: WHEREAS, The recent production of soft, cast, malleable compounds of iron by the Bessemer, the Siemens-Martin, and the crucible steel processes appears to demand a new nomenclature of iron compounds, for the following reasons : 1st. The term "steel," by which these soft products are commercially and professionally designated in England and in the United States, does not completely distinguish them from previously existing "steel" which would harden and temper. 2d. A nomenclature recognized in all languages seems desirable, as well for commercial as for scientific purposes, especially as lawsuits, already commenced, depend on the meaning of the term "steel." 3d. Although homogeneity, due to fusion, is usually recognized, and is by this committee recognized as the most definite characteristic of both bard and soft steel, this quality may be equally well expressed in other terms, thus leaving the old term, "steel," to define the malleable compounds of iron, which will harden and temper. Therefore, resolved, That this committee recommends the following nomenclature : 1. That all malleable compounds of iron with its ordinary ingredients, which are aggregated from pasty masses, or from piles, or from any forms of iron not in a fluid state, and which will not sensibly harden and temper, and which generally resemble what is called " wrought iron," shall be called WELD IRON (German, Sehweisseisen; French, fer soudé) 2. That such compounds, when they will from any cause harden and temper, and which resemble what is now called "puddled steel," shall be called WELD STEEL (German, Schweiss stahl; French, acier soudé).

About thirty miles north of the city of Belleville (which is situated on a branch of Lake Ontario), and in the township of Marmora, Ontario, there is found a belt of gold-bearing quartz veins, which present geological mineralogical, and economic features of great interest to the profession. The district in which these veins are found is characterized as a rolling country, with low rounded hills of syenitic granite, overlain on the flanks of the hills by Silurian limestones, which lie in nearly horizontal beds, and in some places are so fine in texture as to afford lithographic stone of a fair quality. The gold-bearing veins run north and south through this belt of syenitic granite, and are quartz-filled true fissures, with micaceous or talcoid slates forming the walfs of and horses in the veins. The oxidation of Ni-3 to 25 wt pd Al alloys has been studied in 0. 1 atm of oxygen at temperatures between 900° and 1300°C. These alloys have been found to oxidize by three different mechanisms which depend on the temperature of- oxidation and the alloy composition. Two of the three mechanisms do not permit a continuous layer of Al,0, to be formed on the alloy surface and the oxidation rates are greater than that for pure nickel. The third mechanism results in the formation of an external A1203 scale and lke oxidation rates are about three orders of magnitude smaller than those for pure nickel. The minimum amount of aluminum required for the formation of external scales of A L,0, has been determined. NICKEL-base alloys are currently the main source of materials for use at elevated temperatures in gas turbine engines. These alloys are usually coated to obtain oxidation resistance. Coatings on nickel-base alloys are frequently formed by reaction of the alloy with aluminum whereby alloyed nickel aluminides are formed. The alloyed nickel aluminides provide protection to the nickel base alloy because external scales of A1203 (alumina) are formed during oxidation and mass transport through A120, is slow in comparison to mass transport through most other oxides. In view of the protective properties of A1203, it is important to know how much aluminum is required in these alloys in order to form external scales of AlzO,. The present paper is concerned with the oxidation kinetics and the oxidation mechanisms of Ni-A1 alloys and the minimum amount of aluminum required in these alloys for the formation of external scales of Alz03. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS When a Ni-A1 alloy is heated in oxygen at elevated temperatures, the following reactions can take place on the surface of the alloy where the oxide phases are assumed to be virtually pure: These oxide phases are in the form of nuclei scattered over the surface of the alloy and, in view of their rapid formation, they need not be in equilibrium with the alloy. As the oxidation process continues, equilibrium between the alloy surface and the oxide phases is approached and the stability of the oxide nuclei is determined by the composition of the alloy at the alloy/oxide interface because of the following reactions: 3NiA1204 + 2A1 (alloy) = 4AlzO3 + 3Ni (alloy) [41 4Ni0 + 2Al (alloy) = NiA120, + 3Ni (alloy) [ 5 1 Application of the mass-action law to Eqs. [4J and [5J yields the following equilibrium conditions for these reactions: where aA1 and aNi are the activities of aluminum and nickel, are the standard free energies of formation of NiO, A1203, and NA1204, respectively, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature. If the composition of the alloy at the alloy/oxide interface is such that (akl/ahi) is greater than the equilibrium values defined by Eqs. [6] and [7], then Reactions (41 and [5] will go to the right as written. Conversely, if the alloy composition is such that the activity ratio (aLl,/aki) at the alloy/oxide interface is less than the equilibrium values, then Reactions [4] and [5] will proceed to the left. The equilibrium activity ratios in Eqs. [6] and 171 can be calculated since values for the standard free energies of formation of the oxide phases are available. Standard free energies of formation for NiO and A1203 have been tabulated by Elliott and ~leiser.' The standard free energy of formation for NiA1204 can be obtained from the data of Tretjakow and Schmalzried.' The results of these calculations are tabulated in Table I. Table I shows that the following inequality is valid over the temperature interval 900" to 1300°C: (Reaction [5]) (Reaction [4]) « 1and therefore the aluminum activity for these compositions can be taken as equal to the square root of the activity ratios (i.e., aNi = 1). EARLY in 1946 the Shen-Penn Production Co., a subsidiary of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Co., was organized to operate the Shenandoah Stripping, one of the largest open-pit anthracite mines in the world. This mine is located in the Western Middle Field near Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, Pa., and involves the removal of approximately 60,400,000 cu yd of overburden to permit the recovery of 9,200,000 gross tons of rough cleaned coal from an area 8000 ft long and 2700 ft wide, with a maximum depth of 400 ft. Operations began in August 1946, and within the next few years 31,811,000 cu yd of overburden and 2,994,000 gross tons of rough cleaned coal had been removed. During the early days of open-pit mining operations, steam was the primary motive power. However, as the size of the equipment increased, so did the problems of fuel, water, labor, and maintenance. Because of its efficiency and convenience, electric power rapidly replaced steam. Later the modern diesel engine was developed, and today practically all stripping equipment is either electric, diesel-electric, or diesel-powered. In locations where electric power is not readily available or where operations are scattered over a large area, diesel power is favored. At Shenandoah operations are highly concentrated in a relatively small area, and this fact, coupled with the availability of ample electric energy, indicated the selection of electric-powered equipment. Since this was a new company, it was necessary to purchase every item, from the smallest tools to stripping shovels. Although the organization period was hampered by the postwar scarcity of materials, an excellent opportunity was afforded to set up a thoroughly modern plant. This paper will describe the power facilities, with particular emphasis on the more unusual features. The substation is a major item in a power distribution system, and a simple arrangement utilizing high quality equipment is an excellent investment. With this in mind, a 3000-kva unit type substation was selected and installed. This unit is made up of three sections, which are assembled simply by bolting together the various sections and connecting the power leads, see Fig. 1. The transformer proper, rated at 3000 kva, is oil-filled and nitrogen-sealed, having a 66,000-v Delta primary and 4160-v Wye secondary with a grounded neutral and 46-ohm ground resistor. The function of this resistor will be described later. Electrical energy is purchased from a public utility and is delivered to the main substation at 66,000 v over one or the other of two incoming lines. These lines terminate on a high voltage switching section on which high voltage fuses and Thyrite lightning arresters are installed. The outgoing feeder switching unit is made up of the following: 1-An auxiliary compartment consisting of potential and current transformers with necessary terminal blocks for connecting to power company metering equipment. 2-Another auxiliary compartment containing a control transformer, battery, and battery charger for the furnishing of power for tripping and reclosing of power circuit breakers. The assemblies in these auxiliary compartments are mounted on carriages that can be rolled in and out with ease. Potential transformers are readily accessible for inspection and fuse replacement. When withdrawn from the operating position they are completely de-energized and grounded. 3-Two feeder breaker compartments, each with a 1200-amp, 5000-v, solenoid-operated magneblast air circuit breaker, voltmeter, ammeter, overcurrent relays, and a ground relay. These power circuit breakers can be quickly and safely withdrawn or repaired. A built-in isolating mechanism is used for lowering the breaker to a transfer truck for repair or inspection or as a means of disconnecting the breaker from the source of power as an added precaution when working on power lines. The proration of oil produced in the field frequently is based partially or entirely upon the gas-oil ratio of wells. The measurement of the gas-oil ratio is one of the more important field tests in regulatory and pro-ration work, and the test always should be conducted according to standardized methods and procedure. Obviously, the gas-oil ratio and the volume of gas produced by a well depend upon many factors but should be independent of the method of measurement and of the devices used to measure gas and oil. Consequently, the volume of gas accompanying a barrel of oil produced by a well may be measured by any reliable and accurate device or instrument. Frequently either a critical flow prover or an orifice well tester is used for this purpose, and for a particular well the same rate of flow of gas should be obtained regardless of whether a critical flow prover or an orifice well tester is employed in the test. In Texas, when using either instrument, either Capacity Table 1 or 5' is employed in making the necessary computations. If the tables are used, a discrepancy always is found whenever the two instruments are compared by extrapolation to the same conditions of flow. Clearly, Tables 1 and 5 must be at fault in some respects. The orifice well tester and the Bureau of Mines type of critical flow prover are essentially the same instrument; both devices utilize a square-edged orifice 1/8 in. in di-ameter as the primary element, and both freely discharge gas to the atmosphere. Tables for the orifice well tester' have been published in the ranges of 0 to 15 in, of water and 0 to 40 in. of mercury (Hg) differential in pressure. Coefficients for the critical flow prover have been published for differentials in pressure greater than 75 psia. An extrapolation of either differs from the other set of data as much as 18 per cent at some points. No immediately obvious reasons for the discrepancy was found, and data available from the literature were insufficient to effect reconciliation. Consequently, a series of experiments was performed to check the available data and to determine discharge coefficients for the two devices in an overlapping range of differential pressure. The correlating equation used in preparation of tables such as Tables 1 and 5' is the so-called hydraulic equation, Q = C1 vh .....(1) The tables cover orifice sizes from 1/8 through 1 1/4 in. A second set of tables, for use with greater differentials in pressure, apply only to the 3/4, 1, and 1 1/4-in. orifice plates over a pressure range of 0 to 40 in. of Hg. The correlating equation used in preparation of the tables is Q = C2 vH(29.32 + 0.3H)/G . (2) Each of these equations is valid only for the range to which it has been applied, and neither equation is valid for extrapolation. Theoretical equations for flow through an orifice are based upon assumptions of fractionless flow and an emergent jet the size of the orifice. A multiplier, C,, called the discharge coefficient, is inserted into the theoretical expression to compensate for both frictional losses and the contraction of the jet experienced in the plane of the orifice. Buckingham3 shows that C, should vary with the ratio of upstream to downstream pressure for flow of a compressible fluid at any average linear velocity through the orifice less than the velocity of sound. Work published by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics4 indicates that the variation continues into the so-called critical flow region until the vena contracta coincides with the plane of the orifice. The NACA work, however, does not indicate a leveling off of the coefficient. The work of the Bureau of Mines5 for the critical flow prover was based on differential pressures greater than 75 psi and indicates that the discharge coefficient, Cd, is constant in this region at a value of about 0.86.

Pronounced isothermal martensite formation at room temperature was measured dilatometrically in a steel containing 0.01 pct C, 24.9 pct Ni, 0.26 pctAl, 2.58 pct Ti and 0.25 pct Cb. It is shown that martensite will form isothermally if stabilization of the austenite-martensite transformation is eliminated by removal of carbon. The decarburization of two iron-nickel alloys allows isothermal transformation to martensite to occur at temperatures above their athermal Ms temperatures. In an Fe-22.4 pct Ni alloy, at the 0.008 pct C level, the Ms temperature during air cooling is 85°F higher than that during- water quenching-. At the 0.15 pct C level this difference is reduced to only 5°F. The introduction of carbon causes stabilization during air cooling which lowers the Ms temperature virtually to the same level as determined during mate?. quenching. Thus in the 0.15 pct C alloy, the Ms temperature is almost independent of cooling rate. It is suggested that rival theories of martensite formation should be reexamined in alloys of sufficiently low carbon and nitrogen content to eliminate the complication of stabilization. The Ms temperature of a steel containing 0.01 pct C, 24.9 pct Ni, 0.26 pct Al, 1.58 pct Ti and 0.15 pct Cb, solution treated at 1500°F and air cooled as 1/8-in. diam specimens, was found to be 57 °F. 1 However, when held for several hours at room temperature the steel hardened slightly and became appreciably ferromagnetic. Isothermal transformation to martensite was first revealed by Kurdjumov and Maksimova2 in an iron-base alloy containing 0.6 pct C, 6.0 pct Mn and 2 pct Cu. Most of the other studies of isothermal martensite have also been confined to highly alloyed steels which transform at subzero temperatures; for instance, DasGupta and Lement, 3 Cech and Hollomon, 4 Machlin and Cohen,5 Shih, Averbach, and Cohen.6 Averbach and cohen7 noted a rapidly decaying volume increase at room temperature in a steel containing 1 pct C, 1.5 pct Cr and 0.2 pct V. cina8 and Marshall, Perry, and Harpster9 have described the isothermal transformation to martensite at room and subzero temperature in stainless steels. Kurdjumov10 has recently reviewed the subject, noting that the isothermal formation of martensite can be observed only in the temperature range somewhat below Ms or below -50°C. The isothermal formation of martensite may be characterized as follows: 1) It occurs in steels of widely different compositions, the main prerequisite being a low transformation temperature. 2) The transformation occurs by the formation of new plates and not by the growth of old ones. 3) The isothermal transformation is suppresed by stabilization during slow cooling or holding at temperatures near room temperature. However, the factors governing this mode of transformation are still not fully understood. The formation of martensite isothermally suggests an activated process. The early theories of martensite formation did, in fact, utilize classical nucleation concepts. Kurdjumov 11 first proposed the presence of thermally activated nuclei of different sizes and compositions which would grow if they reached critical size during cooling. This treatment was enlarged and developed quantitatively by Fisher, Holloman, and Turnbull12,13 and was later reviewed by the latter two authors.14 Fisher15 associates Ms with a nucleation rate of one per cc per sec. At slightly higher temperatures the nucleation rate is so low that isothermal formation of martensite is not observed in reasonable times. At slightly lower temperatures the nucleation rate is so high that it could not be suppressed by rapid cooling. By judicious use of parameters Fisher 16 was able to obtain good agreement between classical nucleation theory and the incubation times of martensite formation.4 However the application of these principles to martensite formation in iron-nickel alloys15 predicts that an alloy containing about 30 pct (31 at. pet) Ni would not transform. The presence of an Ms temperature at -223° C in an alloy containing 34.1 pct (33 at. pct) Ni led Kaufman and cohen17 to reject the hypothesis of homogeneous nucleation in favor of the reaction path theory originally proposed by Cohen, Machlin and Paranjpe.18 This theory conveniently explains the formation of martensite athermally but becomes labored when dealing with isothermal formation. Kaufman and cohen19 did explain the isothermal activation of embryos by assuming it to be a result of the expansion of their boundary dislocation loops but this treatment predicts an upper temperature limit of isothermal martensite formation.

IN 1897 I published a proposed explanation t for the variation in color and specific gravity of Pennsylvania oils. A resume of this subject was also presented at the First International Petroleum Congress, in Paris, in 1900. Since that time much experimental work bearing upon this explanation has been carried on by myself, in the United States Geological Survey, and under my direction, by Dr. J. Elliott Gilpin, Marshall P. Cram, and 0. E. Bransky, at the Johns Hopkins University. The experimental results thus accumulated seem to throw considerable additional light upon the variations in color and specific gravity of petroleum, as found in different parts of the world, and also upon the variations in chemical composition. Therefore, it seems as if a, summary of the evidence thus obtained might be of value to those members of the Institute who are interested in the examination of oil-fields. The summary is here presented for that purpose. The phenomenon has often been observed in many oil-fields that oils of different color, specific gravity, and chemical composition may be found within short distances of each other. A conspicuous example of this is the occurrence at Jennings, Welsh, and Anse la Butte, La., of petroleum chemically somewhat similar to Russian petroleum; that is, characterized by the presence of naphthenes. Previous studies of plastic deformation of metals have emphasized the important role of bending and constraints during strain under relatively pure stresses.1"5 Some new phenomena such as early conjugate slip6 and polygonization7 are intimately concerned with the relief of bending stresses, the former by slip and the latter by a process analogous to re-crystallization. However, few analyses of the bending deformation of single crystals were found in the literature, and those8,9 are sufficiently previous to the modern interpretations of slip to invite further investigation in this area. The transverse bending mode of testing, using the two-point loading method, was selected because the center portion of the specimen may be considered as under a theoretically pure bending stress with a uniform bending moment. Considerable attention was given to both the lattice distortion and flow characteristics of the crystals during deformation. Experimental Proeedare A specimen under the action of equal and opposite couples at both ends is said to undergo pure bending. The shear and moment diagrams of a specimen under the two-point loading method of transverse bending are shown in Fig 1. The moment over the middle-third of the span is equal to PL/6, and the vertical shear is zero. Fig 2 (A) illustrates the stress distribution in the elastic range on a plane across the middle of the specimen. It can be seen that the normal stress has a maximum value at the extreme surfaces on the tension and compression sides, and decreases proportionately to zero as it approaches the neutral plane. However, when the plastic range is reached, the stress distribution is no longer a straight line relation, but changes in a manner which can be best illustrated as shown in Fig 2(B). The following calculation and stress analysis are mainly in accordance with the works reported by Timoshenkol0 and Kochendörfer.9 From the simple beam formula, the maximum normal stress will occur at the surface of the specimen. For a round specimen with a radius r and for a rectangular specimen with a height 2h and width 2b, the maximum normal stress, Sp, will be given by the following formulas: For round specimen: 2PL Sp = 3pr3 [1] For rectangular specimen: Sn = 8bh2 [2] Since it is reasonable to consider that slip takes place under the same conditions as in uniaxial loading, the resolved shear stress S?, along the operative slip direction will be as follows: For round specimen: 2PL sin x cos ? Sp = 3pr3 sin x cos ? [3] For rectangular specimen: PL S8 = 8bh2 sin x cos ? [4] where X is the angle between the specimen axis and the slip direction and X, the angle between the specimen axis and the major axis of the glide ellipse. It was also reported by Kochenclorfer9 that the critical bending moment, that is, the bending moment exerted on the specimen to initiate slip, should be higher than the value given by the equations stated above. It is known that stoichiometric NiTi transforms to a structure of lower symmetry near room temperature. The present investigation deals primarily with the changes in the electrical and magnetic properties which occur at the transformation. The effects of composition and various heat treatments on electrical properties are also discussed. In recent investigations by Purdy and Parr,' Wang et a1.,2 Dautovich and Purdy,~ Dautovich et a1.,4 and the authors, ~,' NiTi has been observed to undergo a martensitic phase transformation from the ordered CsCl (B2) structure to one of lower symmetry. The crystal structure of the low-temperature modification is still not completely worked out. This transformation occurs near room temperature for the stoichiometric composition. The thermodynamic, elastic, crystallographic, and microstructural characteristics of this transformation for some compositions have been previously reported.'-= In the present investigation, the changes in the electrical transport properties and magnetic susceptibility of NiTi when it undergoes the martensitic phase transformation have been measured. The approximate composition range covered is 48 to 52 pct Ti.* *All compositions are given in atomic percent._____________________ EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS 1) Sample Preparation. The NiTi alloys were prepared from iodide titanium (>99.92 pct Ti) and vacuum-premelted carbonyl nickel (>99.95 pct Ni) by repeated arc melting under gettered argon and casting in a water-cooled copper mold. After the cast buttons were hot-forged at 800" to 950°C, the oxidized surface was removed by grinding and etching. Samples were cut from the worked polycrystalline buttons. After fabrication, the samples were annealed 1 hr at 900°C and water-quenched. The composition of the alloys was assumed to be the same as in the initial feed. This assumption was supported by material balance checks on 100-g arc-melted buttons which demonstrated quantitative recovery to within k0.02 pct. The oxygen content of the alloys was '150 ppma (weight) and the carbon content was 30 to 50 ppm. 2) Electrical Resistivity and Hall Effect. The electrical resistivity was measured over the composition range 48 to 52 pct Ti for temperatures varying from 4.2"K to 900°C. The high-temperature and many of the low-temperature experiments were carried out using conventional 4-probe dc techniques.7 The Hall coefficient and ac resistivity were measured at 20 cps using the apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 1. The equipment is basically an ac potentiometer: The resistive or Hall voltage of the sample is balanced by a comparison voltage provided by a dividing network across a standard series resistance. The off-balance signal is amplified by a Tektronix 122 amplifier and detected by a Princeton Applied Research (PAR) phase-sensitive detector. The precision of the resistivity and Hall coefficient measurements is i0.1 and i3 pct, respectively. The uncertainty in the data is increased by i2 pct from the precision limits because of uncertainty in dimensions and possible end effects. ANTHRACITE was first mined in the Wyoming Valley and sold as an article of commerce in 1808. As some preparation has always been necessary to make it ready to burn, the preparation of anthracite must date back over a hundred years. Two vital factors have determined to a large extent the degree and method of anthracite preparation. These are, first, the character of the beds worked and the methods by which they were mined and, second, the equipment used and practices followed in the burning of the coal. It is not the intention here to go deeply into these phases of preparation as a paper of no mean length could be prepared on the history of either. Rather, the intention here is to point out the main considerations and to show the influence they have exerted on the preparation of anthracite. MINING METHODS AND THEIR RELATION TO PREPARATION In the beginning f the nineteenth century, the coal beds were virgin with the possible exception of some outcroppings that had been worked, to a slight extent, by the Indians. It is known that the American aborigines had a knowledge of the use of this fuel, because when the Wyoming Valley was purchased from them, in 1754, they mentioned the fact that, by selling the land, they would lose their coal.

In September last I had my attention called by Mr. R. G. Leckie to a deposit of nickel in the township of Orford, province of Quebec. In many ways it has proved to be a subject of great interest. As this ore is, as far as I can learn, entirely new in mineralogy and metallurgy, it has seemed to me that it would be a matter of interest to the Institute to have laid before it, in a short paper, the peculiarities I have met with in studying it. This deposit of nickel was first described by Dr. T. The aging characteristics of an Fe-11 at. pct Mo alloy have been studied by means of light metallography together with density, Young&apos;s modulus, and hardness measurements. The results were consistent with the precipitation of a single intermetallic compound during aging; overaging was slow relative to that in other iron-based binary alloys. The solution treatment temperature had a small effect on the rate of hardening whereas deformation prior to aging had a marked effect on both the rate of hardening and the peak hardness. The density data indicate that the compound precipitated is Fe3MO2 and not the Laves phase Fe2Mo. Analysis of the modulus and density results gave values for the time exponent for precipitate growth of approximately 1.0 and 1.5 for the alloy aged with and without prior deformation, respectively. DETAILED studies of precipitation hardening in bcc matrices have been confined largely to the effects of carbides and nitrides. In view of this and the growing technological interest in intermetallic compound strengthening, e.g., in maraging steels, a study of precipitation in iron-based alloys with a low interstitial content has been undertaken. This paper is concerned with the aging behavior of an Fe-11 at. pct Mo alloy; the mechanical behavior of the alloy will be reported later. The early work of sykes on Fe-Mo alloys showed that precipitation of the intermetallic compound was accompanied by an increase in hardness and a decrease in volume of the material. More recent surveys of the strengthening associated with precipitation have been made3-5 and, in particular, Elsen and wassermann4 showed that deformation prior to aging increased the rate of hardening. These latter workers also followed the precipitation process by means of dilatometry, electrical resistivity, and lattice parameter measurements. Their results confirmed that there is a decrease in volume on aging. Except for the work of Hornbogen on an Fe-20 at. pct Mo alloy, neither clustering nor the precipitation of a nonequilibrium phase has been observed in Fe-Mo alloys. Studies of alloys of lower molybdenum content475 indicate that the equilibrium intermetallic compound is precipitated during aging. However, there is some doubt concerning the nature of the equilibrium precipitate phase. According to the phase diagram constructed by Hansen,8 the phase should be precipitated. This phase has a rhombohedra1 crystal structure which is characterized by the formula Fe706,&apos; although the composition of the molybdenum-rich boundary corresponds approximately to Fe3Mo2. The version of the diagram proposed by Sinha, Buckley, and Hume-Rother indicates that the A phase, a Laves phase Fe2Mo, should be precipitated. Their observation of a Laves phase supports the earlier findings of Bechtoldt and Vacher,13 although, in a recent study of the system by means of diffusion couples, Rawlings and Newey did not detect the phase. The work presented here describes the effect of solution-treatment temperature, aging temperature, and prior deformation on the aging characteristics of the alloy as revealed by light metallography together with hardness, density, and Young&apos;s modulus measurements. In addition the density data are used in an attempt to determine the compound precipitated during aging. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A 29-kg ingot of the alloy was cast at R.A.R.D.E., Fort Halstead, from deoxidized, Japanese electrolytic iron and sintered molybdenum. The ingot was homogenized for 6 hr at 1473°K and then worked, with intermediate anneals, into 6- and 16-mm-diam rods and 6-mm plate. Chemical analysis of the alloy gave, wt pct: Mo, 17.5 (11 at. pct); C, 0.003; Si, 0.002; S, 0.005; P, <0.002; and02, 0.0098. Solution treatments were carried out under a dynamic argon atmosphere in a vertical, "crusilite" element, furnace which had a facility for rapid quenching into iced water. Except for the study of the effect of solution treatment temperature, all specimens were solution-treated at 1573" * 2°K for 1 hr. Salt baths were used for the aging treatments. Specimens for hardness, density, and Young&apos;s modulus measurements were produced, after heat treatment, from the stock rod or bar using a precision silicon carbide slitting wheel. As described later, the quenching treatment produced local plastic strain in the stock material; consequently, care was taken to ensure that the specimens were not prepared from these regions. Those specimens used in the studies of the effects of prior deformation on the aging behavior were strained in compression in a Denison universal testing machine. Specimens for light metallographic observations were mechanically polished on successively finer grades of diamond paste down to and then etched in either alcoholic ferric chloride or in a 2 pct nital solution. Vickers diamond pyramid hardness data were obtained using a 30-kg load. At least five impressions were averaged for each determination. Density measurements were made using a displacement technique in which each specimen was weighed in air and in dibromoethane at 296°K. The specimens were cylindrical and weighed 3 to 4 g; all weighings were made on a balance reading to 1 x 10"5 g. For each specimen the mean value of five weighings was used to calculate the density. The density of the dibromoethane was determined using the displacement procedure and a standard nickel specimen. The error in an absolute density value was estimated to be HI.01 pct. MODERN advances in practically all lines of industrial development have occurred in such rapid succession, and have been accepted so readily as accomplished facts, that a retrospect surprises us, by showing how comparatively few of the acknowledged factors of improved conditions may be considered as old. While these advances have not been confined to any country, they have been more pronounced in some than in others, and nowhere more so than in the United States, the population of which, having multiplied nearly three-fold between 1870 and 1910, demanded a proportionately greater increase in materials, supplies, and manufactured products. It therefore appears desirable to discuss mainly conditions in the United States, as concrete evidence of industrial progress throughout the world. Looking backward for but three generations, we may trace the introduction and development of canal- and steamboat-navigation; railroad-transportation; artificial illumination beyond that furnished by candles and lard-oil; quick communication by mail, and subsequently by telegraph or telephone; the manufacture of iron, beyond forms of small dimensions; the production and utilization of steel in large quantities; the economic use of mineral fuel, oil and gas, etc. The practical coincidence of the fortieth anniversary and the 100th technical meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, offers temptation to recall and compare the conditions of mining and metallurgy in or about the years 1871 and 1911. A complete resume would cover phenomenal changes in mining-methods and equipment by which the output of individual exploitation has grown from scores to hundreds and even thousands of units in equal time-intervals.
