Asking the question, “What do the world’s leading corporations and cutting-edge practitioners of sustainability put forth to guide a given mine site for planning and action toward ‘sustainability’?”, this paper explores the spectrum of methodologies and mindsets in available literature, then constructs an example for the large near-closure facility at Kennecott Utah Copper. Values, opportunities and constraints spring from physical, unutilized byproducts, from critical ecosystems and wildlife populations, from location relative to those ecosystems and proximate communities, and from the political will to perform adequate feasibility investigations. Patience, determination and thoroughness are imperative. Identifying most productive and, simultaneously, most protective and restorative, practical methods to approach ‘sustainability’ has become a central mission of industry and business, worldwide. A survey of recent international initiatives finds no single approach that establishes either a readily adaptable methodology or an appropriate set of ‘attention’ points, or agenda, to guide individual mining operations at specific locations toward the elusive but essential goal of ‘sustainable’ mining. Untying this convoluted knot of contending factors requires willingness to recognize and work within ecological constraints for community long-term needs. Occasionally, the task requires the sword of Alexander the Great. Through integration that is unflinchingly honest ethically, culturally, economically, ecologically and scientifically, fully cognizant of place and community at whatever scales are of greatest significance, and integrative of both problem-response and opportunity, we may envision a mineral extraction and beneficiation future that achieves the best, most nearly sustainable, results possible. Industrial ecology (IE), with its clear emphasis on community, ecosystems, and sustainable economic stimulation, presents a sufficiently broad and adaptable discipline to facilitate planning and management toward sustainable mining. The creation of sustainable jobs encapsulates IE’s analogy to the niche survival strategies of organisms in nature. Open to common-sense recognition of faults and opportunities at appropriate scales, IE is less a discipline or prescribed methodology than a mindset, willing to be rigorously scientific when science is imperative, but also willing to exercise “art” when creativity or community engagement are needed. IE is also capable of future-looking compassion for peoples and nature. Looking beyond what has occurred to date, the case of Kennecott Utah Copper provides ample illustration of possibilities for community economic development, environmental management, and significant initiatives beneficial at regional and planetary scales, to become recognizable as deserving of the label, ‘sustainable.’ Through what this researcher terms “whole mine, whole region, whole planet” thinking, strategies become visible and subject to serious consideration, presenting a path to best possible accomplishment in mining. Constituting a maximal broadening of mining’s “traditional” scope, the integrative approach proposed here is the ‘paradigm shift’ being made by many other industries around the world. In aggregate, these steps are the only hope for avoidance of environmental, social and economic risks that threaten to curtail resource development and impair mining companies’ ‘social license to operate.’

The Porgera Joint Venture commenced production during September 1990. A small tonnage underground mine extracts high grade gold ore using small scale stopes. Conventional drill and blast methods are used for development and production mining. Ground support is effected with Splitset anchors, grouted rebar bolts and grouted cable bolts. Splitsets and grouted rebar can be installed by mechanised means. Vertical crater retreat, slot and massfire, and modified VCR stoping tech- niques are used at Porgera. Stopes are backfilled with a relatively strong cemented rockf ill. Future stope sequences require recovery of pillars beside and under filled stopes.

Where pasture production is the intended land use of the areas to be reclaimed, the creation of a suitable growing +medium is a major objective. To achieve this land reclaimers require a sound understanding of the proposed mining plan and a knowledge of the physical, biological and chemical properties of materials intended for resurfacing disturbed areas. Where the original soil is not being replaced in its natural state, research is usually required to determine an alternative growing medium. Results from field research conducted on waste material from the Waihi Gold mine are reported with emphasis on the significance of soil depth in relation to pasture production in this environment.  Problems in extrapolating field research to large scale operations are also considered.   Essentially the requirements for successful pasture production, on surrogate growing medium, are akin to conventional approaches used in New Zealand in the development of unimproved agricultural land. High inputs of fertiliser are initially needed, especially where volcanic soil is used, and careful management of pastures and soils is required to minimise soil erosion and create a sustainable system. In the first three to five years of pasture production, grazing use of the land requires to be dictated by pasture availability and soil conditions and not by animal feed requirements. The use of light stock (young dairy or sheep) is recommended.   Successful land restoration requires a team approach by a range of cooperative specialists including engineers, soil scientists, farm managers, agricultural contractors, landscape architects and environmental officers.

Displacement of soil and groundwater during helical pile installation can produce excess pore water pressures (PWP) in fine-grained soils. Pore water pressure reduces effective stress in the soil immediately adjacent to the helical pile shaft and near the helical piles. Previous studies have shown generation of PWP may affect the capacity to torque ratios of the helical bearing elements. Large diameter helical piles that generate much of their torque and capacity from shaft adhesion are affected by PWP and therefore exhibit significant pile "freeze" after installation. Computer modeling is used herein to evaluate PWP immediately adjacent to helical pile shafts during installation in various soil types. The models show the degree and distance from the shaft that is influenced by PWP during installation and the amount of time required for the PWP to dissipate. Pile freeze has been measured on several project sites by re‐torque measurements. These re-torque data are compared with computer modeling and correlations between saturated hydraulic conductivity and dissipation time are presented and discussed. INTRODUCTION Helical piles are full-displacement piles, meaning installation does not produce drill spoil. Soil is displaced laterally as the pile progresses into the ground. This displacement of soil causes an increase in PWP, which reduces adhesion between the pile and the soil. For helical piles with small-diameter shafts, adhesion contributes little to the overall capacity and torque of the pile, so PWP changes are not typically considered in determining pile capacity. In modern construction, the use of larger diameter helical piles has become very common. For large-diameter helical piles, changes in PWP immediately adjacent the shaft can be quite large during installation. Increased pore water pressure and reduced adhesion can have a temporary effect on pile capacity and installation torque.

This paper briefly describes the excavation procedure of a powerhouse, comprising of its incremental excavation, reinforcement measures, and the installed monitoring system. During the first phase of excavation, the data obtained from monitoring of the behavior of Mudstone layers were used to recommend extra support measures. These data are also used to design the support of the powerhouse during its extension phase. The hydration kinetics of MgO, namely magnesia or magnesium oxide, obtained by calcination of magnesite MgCO3 or synthetic MgCO3·3H2O has been studied. Nesquehonite (MgCO3·3H2O) was prepared by the reaction of MgCl2 with Na2CO3 in a mixed-suspension mixed-product removal (MSMPR) crystallizer at 40 °C. Three magnesium oxide samples were obtained by calcination of magnesite MgCO3 or synthetic MgCO3·3H2O in muffle furnace at 900, 1100 and 1300 °C for 3 h, respectively. The hydration experiments of MgO samples were investigated at 25, 35 and 45 °C for 24 h in a stirred batch reactor. The hydration results indicate that the rate and extent of hydration of magnesia decreased remarkably with hydration temperature and increased with decreasing calcination temperature at a constant hydration temperature. The whole hydration reaction of magnesia was supposed to experience the promotive period and declining period. An empirical kinetic model ( k t p -?ln(1-??) ??) and a modification of the classical shrinking core model for diffusion control ( k t b d -?-?3 2 ????1 [1 (1 ??) ] ) have been applied to fit the experimental data of hydration in two stages, respectively. The values of kinetic parameters ( p k and d k ) were obtained by regression analysis and the activation energy of the sample at 900 °C was estimated to be 34.23 kJ/mol. The comparison between MgO from calcination of synthetic MgCO3·3H2O and a commercial MgO used in silicon steel production was carried out, indicating that special silicon steel grade MgO can be obtained by calcination of MgCO3·3H2O below 900 °C.

La segunda fase, integra todos los sistemas de supervisión y control de planta con los sistemas de seguimiento “online” de Mantenimiento (fase 1), desarrollando un solo sistema de tratamiento y análisis de información de planta; y la tercera fase comprende la instalación y el desarrollo de aplicaciones basadas en tecnologías Cliente/Servidor con base SQL, que finalmente proporcionan la información y los medios para realizar consultas que optimizan el seguimiento y toma de decisiones relacionado al mantenimiento preventivo/predictivo.

A kinetic study of the carbon deposition reaction was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad investigation of metallurgical reactions in the iron ore blast furnace. The disproportionation of carbon monoxide on iron pellets was investigated at carbon monoxide pressures between 0.5 and 2 atmospheres (absolute) and temperatures from 400° to 1,075° C. Gas flow in the range from 0.25 to 0.85 standard liter per minute was found to have little effect on the reaction velocity. The addition of nitrogen and helium to caron monoxide exerted only a dilution effect on the rate of carbon deposition. However, an addition of 1 percent hydrogen increased the rate about 100 times. Small amounts of carbon dioxide in the inlet gas exerted little effect on the rate of carbon deposition. The maximum rate for carbon deposition in the first 2 hours occurred at 550° C. The apparent molar activation energies at various stages of the reaction were found to vary from 13 kcal initially to 36 kcal during the latter stages of the reaction. The reaction rate behavior was tentatively explained by an adsorption step followed by the diffusion of iron through a shell of inactive iron carbide.

With the proving of a mineable orebody at Orlando in May 1961, Peko Mines N.L. was faced with the decision of whether to mill the ore on site or to haul it 25 miles to central facilities at Peko. Orlando was a relatively small orebody, so that it was decided to haul, although no reliable assessment of possible ore haulage costs was available.The necessity for a good haul road was recognised from the beginning and a 17 mile, 12 ft wide, single seal bitumen road was constructed, to link the mine to the Stuart Highway and Peko. The initial selection of 20 ton capacity diesel-powered end-tipping ore carts was made, with the best information available at the time.Since then some 130,000 tons of ore have been carted over a period of 3 years, and this paper presents the experiences of this haulage operation and the lessons learned.A second mine has just been brought into operation at Ivanhoe, 19 miles from Peko. For this haul it was decided to use an ore haulage vehicle of the side tipping road train type, which would cart some 70 tons, or more than three times the load of the vehicles initially selected.Only about 5,000 tons had been hauled at the date of this paper, but preliminary figures indicate a cost 01 1· 65d./ton-mile as against 2·47d. for the smaller vehicles.It would appear that the road haulage of ore from small outlying mines to a central plant can be highly economical, if certain basic rules concerning haul roads and vehicle selection are followed. This paper does not try to determine the maximum tonnages and haul distances which would finally make road hauling uneconomical...

The Lafitte field, the largest oil reserve in South Louisiana, is in Jefferson Parish, some 25 miles due south of the City of New Orleans. The discovery well, The Texas Company's No. I, Louisiana Land and Exploration Co., in the southeast corner of sec. 19, T. 17 S., R. 24 E., was completed on May 15, 1935. The initial production of this well was 960 bbl. of 34.9º A.P.I, gravity oil per day, through 1/4-in. choke, with a tubing pressure of 1600 lb. per sq. in. Producing depth was 9558 to 9572 ft., the total depth being 9572 feet. The development of the field has been at the rate of three to eight new producing wells per year. Up to Jan. I, 1944, 60 producing wells and three dry holes had been drilled, while two of the original producing wells had been abandoned, Although the field is not unitized, The Texas Company was the sole operator in the field until the Lafitte Oil Co. completed its NO. I Jefferson Parish, near the center of the west line of the NW/4 sec. 20, T. I7 S., R. 24 E., on July 27, 1941. No additional wells have been drilled by the Lafitte Oil Company. Drilling and WeLl-completion Practices All drilling operations have been conducted with the steam-driven rotary equipment mounted on submersible barges. A canal is dug to the well location and the drilling unit is floated into position. The seacocks are then opened and the barge settles to the bottom. After the well is completed, seacocks are closed and water is pumped out of the barge. This procedure permits the barge, with drilling equipment still in place, to be floated and moved off the location. The conventional open-hole and the gun-perforation method of completing wells has been used in this field. Where possible, the initial completion is from the deepest 'sand and recompletions are made progressively up the hole, by plugging back with cement to the upper sand and gun-perforating opposite the new sand. The oil string usually is 7 5/8 in., 26 to 34-lb. casing. Three wells have been completed using 9 5/8-in. 44-lb casing set below 10.000 feet. Fig. I shows the completion and recom-pletion practices on one well in the field. This figure also shows the relative locations of the different producing sands as shown on the electric well log. Structure The structure is an elongated dome, cut by two north-south faults, which divides the field into three segments. The west segment is the highest structurally and contains most of the recoverable oil and gas. The center segment is less important and the east segment is of little value. "Commonly used anchor monitoring systems are mainly based on the use of anchor force meters. However, experience shows that the reliability of the display of force meters lowers over time. Other measurement and test methods like for example fibre bragg grating method require a comparison with an unloaded optical fibre and give only selective information about the bearing behavior. Moreover the obtained information has to be interpreted. In the following article, first measuring results of an anchor monitoring system based on measurements with optical fibre are presented. The new monitoring system is based on the Rayleigh technology and was used to test the load bearing behavior of the anchor grout body as well as for the evaluation of the grout body condition in concrete-damaging groundwater.INTRODUCTIONThe first fibre optic sensors came onto the market about three decades ago. Initially used as special solutions only in selected cases, now they have found use in almost all areas of technology, especially in areas, where electrical sensor systems reach their limits. The first application examples of spatially resolved fibre-optic sensors in the field of geotechnics have been in existence since the mid-1990s, in projects such as the assessment of the of radioactive repository location sites (Hurtig et al. 1994), for the monitoring of landfill sealing systems (Hurtig et al. 1995) or within the framework of the rehabilitation of mountain farming landscapes (Schreck et al. 1998).The company's first own works in the field of glass fibre measurement technology have been in existence since 1993. The first carried out projects were a monitoring at the Edertalsperre (Dietz et al. 2001), a monitoring with glass fibre tendon at a flood bridge in Carinthia as well as monitoring within the framework of the Storebælt crossing. In all cases, the structure was permanently monitored by means of individual-point measurements. Since 1993 various fibre-optic sensor solutions for geotechnical applications have been introduced to the market (Voet, Glötzl 1996, Hurtig et al. 1994)."

Aspects of blast vibrations, damage mechanisms and the influence of rock quality on damage severity are reviewed and results presented from a monitoring programme in which the rock mass rating for six tunnels was determined. The peak particle velocity induced in the tunnels during open-pit blasting was measured and the tunnels were inspected visually for fresh damage after each blast. The results suggest that the quality of rock in which an excavation is situated has an influence on the level of ground vibration to which it can be subjected without sustaining damage. This means that the use of a single limiting value of peak particle velocity, as in the blast damage criteria for residential structures, is not ideal and may result in damage to excavations in poorer-quality rock masses

Development of the Canadian North, a subject of growing national interest, must in part await the development of better forms of trans-port. The estimated 500,000 square miles of muskeg terrain in the north combined with the" scarcity of roads make essential the early development of special purpose muskeg vehicles. Good progress has been made in the last eleven years in classifying muskeg and some progress has been made in determining its mechanical properties. Limited travel is now possible through the use of special purpose tracked vehicles which have been built without adequate design data. A program to provide data which can be used to optimize muskeg vehicle designs began in 1957. The results of the second phase of this pro-gram are presented in this report. It is shown that vehicle performance in muskeg is directly related to the mechanical properties of the muskeg. Further, it is shown that good de-sign practice for tracked vehicles expected to operate in snow, sand, soft clays and loams is also good practice for muskeg vehicles. All indications are that muskeg mechanics is properly a part of conventional soil mechanics.

A review of thermodynamic information and models of slags, including associated software when available, is presented. The pertinence and accuracy of these models is discussed by comparison of their predictions for various slag thermodynamic properties with the available experimental data. Practical industrial applications will be illustrated by a literature review of the dephosphorization process of ferromanganese alloys and by the description of Ti behavior during silico-manganese alloys production. This latter example will show how the thermodynamic models have been used to propose a flotation treatment at low temperature to enhance TiC removal.

Prominent among the ore minerals at Mt. Ellison, in the Brock's Creek district, Northern Territory, are a number of copper-bismuth sulphides wittichenite, aikinite, emplectite, in association with nativebismuth, chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, sphalerite and linnaeite.Linnaeite and aikinite formed first and were followed by native bismuth. Wittichenite was later and substantially replaces earlier minerals. Replacement of aikinite by wittichenite has produced secondaryor reaction bismuth.INTRODUCTIONThe Brock's Creek district of the Northern Territory lies to the south east of Darwin and has been the locale of intermittent mining of small but rich deposits of diverse ore type. Gold, tin, and copper ores were recovered especially between 1890 and 1910 with minor exploitation up to the present time. Copper ores were of prior importance, the main production coming from supergene enriched deposits of chalcocite.The mines are situated in strongly folded Precambrian strata comprising slates, sandstones, volcanics and amphibolites with replaced haematitic rocks (Sullivan, 1953). The strata in the Brock's Creek area immediately north of the Darwin-Birdum railway line are domed around a roughly circular granitic mass some 5 miles in diameter. The Mount Ellison mine is located near the N.E. margin of the granite in metamorphosed basic country rock.Study of a series of polished sections from Mt. Ellison revealed the presence of linnaeite, chalcopyrite, bornite, aikinite, wittichenite, emplectite, bismuth, sphalerite, and chalcocite. With the exception of sphalerite and emplectite each of these minerals is prominently developed and intimately intergrown with the other constituents.

Concerns regarding the uncertainty of stope dilution at MMG Dugald River Underground Mine led to a trial stoping program to acquire full-scale comprehensive geotechnical information and to test the validity of the geotechnical and mining parameters. Given that stope production drilling and blasting is a key parameter that influences dilution a detailed stope blast vibration project was implemented. The stoping trial consisted of 19 stopes, a combination of both sublevel open stoping and longitudinal and transverse stopes, of which five were monitored for blast vibrations.The blast vibration project utilised 20 triaxial geophones and five triaxial accelerometers installed in the hanging wall of five monitored stopes. For each stope fired, full blast waveforms were recorded along with detailed information of the blast design. Analysis of the blast vibrations used the Holmberg-Persson approach, with potential damage determined by the relative (Holmberg-Persson) K values.The project identified the benefit of parallel, breakthrough slot holes in reducing blast vibration damage. The results show that radial rings toeing or stabbing into the stope wall lead to higher vibrational energy yield which contributed to increased overbreak. Hanging wall overbreak, by comparison, with parallel, breakthrough blastholes with 1 m standoff, combined with lower density explosive charging (0.8 EP) and increased delays limited blast vibration damage. A number of ring burdens from 1.4 m to 2.5 m were monitored with no difference in terms of energy yield being identified. Changes to the stope drill and blast design are suggested to better control the large blast vibrations and recommendations from this project have been implemented into future mine design and planning.CITATION:Hassell, R, Villaescusa, E, de Vries, R and Player, J, 2015. It is delightful to read a technical paper like that of J. E. Johnson, The Effect of High Carbon on the Quality of Charcoal-Iron, presented in October, 1912, at the Cleveland meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.' The clear, simple, and straightforward manner in which he describes his experiments and results makes you feel as if you had been, so to speak, at his elbow during the course of his investigations, while his method of procedure is so rational that you can fairly anticipate each step in the logical sequence of the tests performed. The following notes suggested by Mr. Johnson's paper are presented here in the hope that they may help, if only a mite, towards the final solution of a problem of considerable scientific and industrial importance. Physical Properties of Cast-Iron us. Its Ultimate Composition. Mr. Johnson writes that " an investigation along the lines of consumption showed that different irons have different characters totally independent of their analyses," and he declares that " the presence or absence of these elements [meaning carbon, phosphorus, silicon, and manganese] alone will not account for all, scarcely for a half, of the facts which have long been known." He further tells us that some foundries have " proved, by the most irrefutable tests, that they could take a certain iron of a given analysis and produce certain results," while with " another iron of the same analysis they could not produce these results at all." I feel confident that every experienced and thinking metallurgist will readily believe Mr. Johnson's statements and will share his views in regard to the hopelessness of inferring the
