Traditional techniques for the experimental determination of toxic fumes produced by the detonation of high explosives are not applicable to blasting agents. To detonate properly, blasting agents require confinement, a significant booster, charge diameters of 3 inches (7.5 cm) or greater, and charge lengths greater than two-times the charge diameter. Without these conditions, blasting agents will not detonate at full order, leading to a misrepresentation of the gaseous products. A facility for detonating large, confined charges in a controlled volume has been constructed at the Pittsburgh Research Center’s Experimental Mine. The facility consists of a portion of mine entry (once used for full-scale mine explosion research and demonstrations) enclosed between two explosion proof bulkheads. Total volume of the chamber is 9,666 ft (274 m). The chamber is equipped with an air circulating system and is3 3vented using the mine's airflow. Up to 10-pound (4.5-kg) charges can be detonated in the chamber using a variety of confinements. For a typical test, the blasting agent is confined in a 4-inch (10-cm) schedule 80 steel pipe and initiated by a 3-inch (7.5-cm) diameter, 1-inch (2.5-cm) thick Pentolite booster. This combination of confinement and initiation yields a detonation velocity of about 4,000 m/sec for ANFO. This velocity is in line with that measured for blasting in the field. Twenty four 2-inch thick steel plates are suspended around the pipe bomb to stop shrapnel that would otherwise seriously damage the chamber. Following detonation of an explosive in the chamber, a circulating fan is run for about 10 minutes to uniformly mix the chamber atmosphere. Fumes samples are taken out of the chamber through 1/4-inch (0.6-cm) Teflon or polyethylene2tubes for analysis. The fumes are analyzed using bubblers or Vacutainers to collect samples for analysis by the analytical chemistry lab. The technique described here has been employed to determine the fumes produced by the detonation of a variety of ANFO formulations and commercial explosives. This technique may be developed as a standard test to measure fumes produced by blasting agents or may be used to provide data with which to develop a computer model that will reliably predict the expected fumes production based on chemical composition.

"Minera Escondida operates two open pits on a porphyry copper district, southeast of Antofagasta, Chile. During 2005, ore will be delivered exclusively from one pit to two concentrators, while from 2006 both pits will provide ore to these plants. Annual testing programmes on drillhole samples, have allowed for the construction of hardness block models since 2000. These models have delivered two main hardness descriptors, the Bond work index and the SAG power index. These parameters and plant operational specifications have been used as input information to forecast, the expected throughput and ball mill product size (P80) for each block of ore. Two forecasting techniques have been used, an in house model, strongly dependant of bond work index and MinnovEx´s CEET2, dependant of Bond work index and Sag power index and other parameters. Model performance has been evaluated from reconciliating on a monthly basis, the forecasted throughputs against a recalculated plant throughput which accounts for losses in tonnage not caused by ore hardness but instead by unscheduled plant operation problems. The model performance for 2003 was ± 2% yearly and ± 5% quarterly, well within the expected ± 3% and ± 10%. Development of aggregate resources for use in structural concrete has been encouraged in Japan to support infrastructure improvement and national land conservation. Natural aggregate is a valuable resource necessary for sound economic development, and its importance is growing. After completion of aggregate mining projects, planting and afforestation are implemented. But sandy soil in excavation sites is not optimum for the growth of vegetation, and many years are needed before forests are restored. Planting techniques should be improved to support efficient reforestation in a shorter period of time. For this purpose, problems hampering growth of vegetation must to be solved through application of physical and physicochemical techniques to ensure that the environment and the ecosystem will be conserved in project sites.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Geological concepts are employed routinely in porphyry copper exploration at the area selection, prospect appraisal and deposit definition stages. Regional, district-scale, deposit-scale and laboratory-based concepts can all play a role, with the resulting porphyry copper models providing templates for the integration of geochemical and geophysical responses and interpretations. Of the 19 concepts and parameters selected for brief discussion, those relating to subdivision of porphyry intrusions, understanding of diverse and commonly complex alteration-mineralisation patterns and lithocap characterisation are undoubtedly the most influential in exploration. Several of them are of particular importance because of their role in promoting grade development. Additional belt-, district- and deposit-scale features are currently little used but hold promise, whereas others have less practical value but help in underpinning the evolving porphyry copper genetic model.CITATION:Sillitoe, R H, 2015. The study evaluates the hydrological behaviour of exposed and covered waste rock dumps. The objectives were to determine the major factors influencing unsaturated flow in waste rock dumps and covers, and to improve the in-situ, laboratory and numerical modeling characterization methods. Using material properties obtained from in-situ and laboratory tests, waste rock dumps of different configurations, with and without covers, were modeled. It was found that a properly designed “Store, divert and release” (SDR) cover allows most of the water to be diverted downslope and discharged outside of the waste rock dumps. The SDR cover seems to work efficiently even in extreme storm events. The numerical modeling results show that the unsaturated hydraulic properties (e.g. air entry value and water entry value) of the materials largely control the infiltration of water into waste rock dumps.

Specific energy is defined as the amount of work required to break a unit volume of rock and is used to predict the performance of mechanical miners. It is obtained from full-scale rock cutting experiments, which require large block samples, experienced personnel and expensive equipment found in only a few research centres in the world. Estimation of the optimum specific energy, at which a given geological formation is excavated at optimum cutting geometry in the most energy efficient manner, from mechanical rock properties to predict the performance/efficiency of roadheaders is the basic aim of this study. The mechanical rock property tests require only core samples, which are easier to obtain and to test. In this context, full-scale rock cutting tests are performed on 23 different rock, mineral and ore samples including sandstone, claystone, tuffite, chromite, trona and copper collected from some operating mines in Turkey. The optimum specific energy values are obtained for each sample. Physical and mechanical property tests are performed on the core samples obtained from the same samples to determine uniaxial compressive strength, indirect (Brazilian) tensile strength, static and dynamic elasticity moduli, Schmidt hammer rebound values, density, and Cerchar abrasivity index. The relationships between the optimum specific energy and the mechanical rock properties are analysed using statistical methods. The results indicate strong relationships between the optimum specific energy and the mechanical rock properties. The strongest relationships are found by using uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength. The performance models developed in this study are in good agreement with the empirical models previously developed for roadheaders and can be used reliably for prediction purposes. LOCATION AND HISTORY The Lakeshore Copper property is located on the Papago Indian Reservation approximately 30 miles South of Casa Grande, Arizona. This major porphyry type deposit was discovered by El Paso Natural Gas Company in 1966. Following an extensive diamond drilling program, El Paso invited several mining companies, including Hecla, to examine the property with a view towards participation. Hecla's examination, and the attendant feasibility studies, led to agreements, which were finalized in September 1969, whereby Hecla would acquire a 50% interest in the property, and would act as operator. The Lakeshore deposit covers an area approximately 3,000 feet in width by 6,000 feet in length. It consists of an upper zone of disseminated copper oxides, averaging approximately 100' in thickness overlying a zone of disseminated copper sulfides up to 1,000 feet thick. Near the base of the disseminated ore is a blanket like zone of high grade copper sulfides, referred to as the tactite ore body. The mine is being developed to produce approximately 6,500 tons per day of oxide ore and 9,000 tons per day of sulfide ore. This represents a total daily production rate of 15,500 tons per day, which will be achieved by underground mining methods using rubbertired dieselpowered mining equipment. DEVELOPMENT LAYOUT The mine is being developed by two parallel 15° decline tunnels. The declines were collared 5,000 feet southeast of the ore body, and are being driven in a northwestery direction, to pass beneath the tactite ore zone. The "conductivity ", Kr, of a spherical void in a linear temperature gradient due to radiation is calculated by integration of the general expression for diffuse radiation between two gray surfaces of arbitrary orientation. The spherical geometry allows an exact evaluation of the phenomenon without resorting to up-proximate expressions for the radiant heat flux. The resulting expression for Kr is three quarters of the approximate value obtained by Loeb. IN the determination of the thermal conductivity of porous materials such as sintered UO2 and ThO2 fuel pellets, the magnitude of the thermal conductivity in the pores due to radiative heat transfer across the pore, Kr, may be important in assessing the total conductivity of the pellets. Loeb' has calculated Kr for various pore geometries by approximating the net flux of heat between two surfaces of temperature difference AT as 4eT~AT and obtained: K,=4yoet3odp [1] where a is the Stefan-Boltzmann constant, E is the emissivity of the radiating surface, To is the average absolute temperature of the region across which radiation occurs, dp is the largest dimension of the gap in the direction of heat flow, and y is a geometric factor. That is: y = 1 for laminar pores and cylindrical pores with axes parallel to the heat flow direction, y = 2/3 for spherical pores, y = /4 for cylindrical pores with axes perpendicular to heat flow direction. It was the purpose of this work to obtain an exact expression for K, in spherical pores by integration of the general expression for the net heat transfer between two incremental areas on the surface of a spherical pore. This procedure yields a value of Kr 3/4 of that obtained by Loeb. I) CALCULATION OF Kr Fig. 1 illustrates the general geometry which defines the problem. The total emissive power for a gray body is given by: E = EoT4 [2] where E is the radiated energy per unit area of the radiation surface per unit time, T is the absolute temperature, o is the Stefan-Boltzmann constant (o = 5.67 X lo- '' watt per sq cm-"K1), and E is the emissivity of the surface. Although Eq. [2] gives the exact expression for the total emissive power of any gray body, all practical problems involve the net exchange of thermal radiation between a body and surrounding bodies. The two major considerations in the solution of such problems are a) shape and relative position of the surfaces and b) the emissivities of the surfaces. In this work it shall be assumed that all incremental areas on a pore have the same emissivity and, further, that little or no reflection occurs (i.e., the radiation hitting a surface is either absorbed or transmitted). Thus, the solution of the stated problem requires only that consideration a be satisfied. Consider two incremental surface areas dA 1 and dA2 of the same material in a general orientation to one another. Let dAl be at temperature TI and dAz be at T2. "The self-heating facility developed at the Noranda Technology Centre [Rosenblum and coworkers, 2001; 1995] has now been established in the Department of Mining, Metals and Materials Engineering at McGill University. A research program into mechanisms has been initiated (with support now from four industrial partners under Camiro). The first investigation is into the role of pyrrhotite (Po), the most commonly suspected mineral to trigger self-heating. Following a standard experimental protocol, self-heating was assessed on samples of Po mixed with sand as an inert material. With increasing Po content, self heating progressively increased but, interestingly, the samples visually appeared less and less oxidized. A high Po content, it was hypothesized, may give a more reducing environment favouring formation of H2S. The presence of this gas could be significant as it has a high exothermic heat of reaction with oxygen. The system was modified to test the hypothesis by including copper pieces and copper sulphate to react with (and therefore reveal) the gas as copper sulphide. Evidence is presented in support of H2S production, which to our knowledge has not been shown before and introduces a potentially important avenue of investigation into self-heating mechanisms.INTRODUCTIONSelf-heating of sulphide minerals poses potential environmental and safety hazards in mining of ores, and storage and transport of concentrates. While some conditions are known to be critical, the reactions remain poorly understood making self-heating difficult to predict and control.A major advance in measurement was introduced by Rosenblum and co-workers [Rosenblum et al., 2001; Rosenblum and Spira 1995]. A self-heating assessment method was developed and applied to various sulphide-bearing materials The method is based upon automated calorimetric cells with data acquisition, now available to McGill researchers and which have been used for the study reported here."

The closing of the gap in the European waterway- net is one of the big and challenging traffic projects following the German reunification. The water canals in the North German plain connect the Rhine river, the border between Germany and France, with the Oder, the German border river to Poland. As early as in the 30's of the 19th century the planning and construction of a ship- lift and a canal bridge started, in order to close this last big gap in the system between the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe- Havel Canal near Magdeburg. This main waterway connects the West of Germany, known for its coal mines and steel mills, with the capital Berlin, and from there it goes on into Poland. The building activities started in 1934 but came to a complete stop in 1942 because of the war. The communist government in East Germany was not interested in continuing this huge project, including the ship lock Rothensee, the canal bridge crossing the river Elbe, the former border river between West and East Germany, and the lock Hohenwarthe due to lack of political backing along with low construction capacity.

The Mather Mine property is composed of a 5.2 sq km (2 sq mile) area within the Cities of Ishpeming and Negaunee which are located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Production in this mine started in 1943; it ran continuously until its closing in 1979, having produced slightly over 55 million tons of iron ore. This mine was a joint venture between several steel companies and The Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company (CCI), with CCI being the fee holder and operator. For the first 17 years of operation, the ore was shipped in its natural state directly from the mine to the steel mill. By 1960, iron ore pellets were on the market and they proved so superior to the natural soft Mather ore that the latter became difficult to sell except for the coarser portions. It was decided to develop a pelletizing process for the Mather ore, and this was accomplished by 1965 when the first Mather pellets were produced. From this date, all but the coarse fraction of the Mather ore was shipped as pellets. The geological setting is that of a large east-west trending synclinorium which plunges to the west. The lowest member of this trough-like structure is, for the most part, a quartzite-like graywacke, the upper 20 m of which grades into a softer, fine grained slate. Lying conformably on this graywacke footwall member is an iron- formation member which is over 1,300 m in thickness. This iron-formation is cow posed of thin alternate bands of iron oxides and chert and is intruded by a number of diorite sills - some up to 122 rn (400 ft) in thickness. The north limb of this synclinorium dips at approximately 45' and bottoms out at about 1,000 m from surface in the central part of the mine. There are two sets of faults, many of which are intruded by diorite dikes, which trend east-west and southeast-northwest. Displacements are varied, reaching a maximum displacement of 243 m (800 ft). The ore is found lying directly on the slatey footwall and its position is largely controlled by the faults and dikes, with the bulk of the ore being on the upper side of these structures. The ore is composed of soft earthy hematite and martite with vertical thicknesses up to 122 m (400 ft) although the average thickness would be closer to 46 m (150 ft). The ore averaged 60% iron and 7% silica on a dried analysis. The Mather Mine is located on the north limb of the syncline and was worked from two shafts, the deepest of which. was 1,09 7 m. These two shafts are about 2 km apart and serviced a total of 8 working levels between them during the life of the mine. The level spacing was about 61 m (200 ft). The main haulageways were driven parallel to the ore/footwall contact in the hard cow petent graywacke wherever possible. On the lower levels, deeper into the footwall, naked development was common. This material graded into roof bolting ground towards the upper stratigraphic portion. As drifting progressed further into the upper stratigraphic portion of the footwall, progressively stronger steel sets had to be used. From the main haulageway, cross-cuts were turned into the orebody on 61 m (200 ft) centers and extended as far as needed to recover the ore available to that particular cross-cut. The main haulageways and cross-cuts were driven 3 m (10 ft) high, 3 m (10 ft) wide at the top and 4.6 m (15 ft) wide at the bottom. This configuration would accomodate a set composed of a 2.7 m (9 ft) cap on top of two 2.7 m (9 ft) legs angled out at 18'. A sill plate was used under each leg to prevent its sinking into the ore below. The type of steel used was dependent on the expected weight to be experienced. Sets were placed on 1.63 m (5 ft 4 in.) centers; however, in extremely heavy areas, it was sometimes necessary to install sets on 0.8 m (2 ft 8 in.) centers. On the top two levels (5th and 6th), the ore was considerably hard-er and was mined by sub-level stoping and long hole drilling. Very light steel sets were used in the main haulageways and cross-cuts and timber was used in the production drifts. Some con- crete production drifts were installed on 6th level, but proved to be uneconomical. However, as mining reached greater depths, the ore became softer and more massive, reaching its maximum vertical heights on 11th and 12th levels. Turf grown in mixtures of sintered fly ash and soil benefited from increased water-infiltration rates, greater total pore space, and higher moisture availability, The result was an improved turf stand with increased grass yield and root density.

The approach has been applied with success to the restoration of chalk workings in southern England, and research and trials relating to restoration blasting and the replication of limestone dale landforms have been undertaken. An essential prerequisite for application of the technique is rigorous geomorphological analysis of the locality to ensure that final quarry landforms are consistent with the local geomorphological and landscape setting. It is always important to ensure compatibility of the final landform with the intended after-use, and to achieve this it is also essential that such restoration schemes have a sound geotechnical basis. A disadvantage of the approach is that final slopes tend to be flatter, especially in weaker strata where natural slopes are not steep; the implications for reserves may be unacceptable, particularly in quarry extensions

"This paper provides guidelines on performing mass and energy balance modelling involving coal and coal derivatives. Usually, the inputs to a pyrometallurgical process would be specified in terms of elements and compounds. Reliable thermochemical data is more widely available for species involving uniquely defined, relatively smaller molecules. However, in the case of coal, the molecules are extremely large and not uniquely defined. Consequently, modelling processes involving coal and its derivatives involve several potential pitfalls. These are outlined in the present paper.It was found that coal proximate analysis should not be regarded as absolute; it could vary with several parameters, including heating rate. For modelling, the use of ultimate analyses should be considered a preferable option to proximate analyses, where ‘fixed carbon’ and ‘volatiles’ are not defined in terms of chemical composition. Significant errors could be incurred if the larger molecules are neglected during calculation of the calorific value (CV) of coal gas (the gas liberated when coal is heated in the absence of oxygen).For elemental analysis determination, the oxygen content (which is calculated by balance) should be checked to ensure it is within the expected range. For representation of sulphur in coal, one should avoid doublecounting due to SO3 in the ash analysis.Potentially, oxygen in coal could be represented as O2, H2O, CO, or CO2.However, use of some of these species without considering the experimentally determined gross CV leads to significant errors in the energy balance. If coal enthalpy is calculated from elemental analyses without correction, representation of coal oxygen as H2O(l) gives reasonable accuracy. Coal volatiles could be represented by a complex mixture of compounds, even using different oxygen-containing species than these four, provided the enthalpy is corrected.It is recommended that an ‘enthalpy correction value’ be incorporated in energy balances involving combustion, devolatilization, or conversion of coal and coal derivatives, e.g. coke, char, or tar. That would imply that proximate analysis, elemental analysis, as well as the gross CV would be required for all solid or liquid coal-derived substances being modelled. No other correction due to carbon being present in a form other than graphite should be used, as that would imply double-counting some effects."

This Bureau of Mines report describes a technique for determining the confining pressures that must be provided for stabilizing underground openings in incompetent rock. The technique is adapted for use with a nonlinear finite-element computer code, NONSAP, to obtain stabilization pressures for linear or nonlinear stress distributions in the rock media around the excavation. This analysis permits a point-wise calculation of active rock pressures that depend on the values of shear stress and strength along the excavation surface. The approach is applied to the solution of several sample problems. The results show that both the magnitude and the distribution of stabilizing confining pressures are significantly influenced by rock and joint strengths, joint orientation, and biaxial nature of the load field.

"By compiling geological, structural, geophysical, and geochemical information into a 3D geological model, we evaluated the orogenic gold potential in the vicinity of a hidden segment of an important Archean fault zone, the Cadillac-Larder Lake fault (CLLF) in the region of Rouyn-Noranda. The segment of CLLF in the present study is partly covered by Proterozoic sedimentary rocks. Because more than 2000 t Au have been extracted along the CLLF to date, our objective is to evaluate the gold potential at depth along a poorly known segment of this fault. A 3D geological model (50 km × 9 km × 1.5 km) including the covered segment was built through the compilation and homogenization of available geological data and the construction of 23 cross sections. The geology under the Proterozoic cover was evaluated using geophysical inversions, drill holes (42 in total), and surrounding geology. All available assays were filtered and upscaled to a 250 m × 250 m × 250 m regular cell grid to determine and quantify spatial relationships between geological features and mineralized occurrences using the weights of evidence method. Structural features, such as E-W-trending faults and fault intersections, and certain lithologies with a high primary porosity such as volcanoclastic rocks of the Blake River Group and Timiskaming sedimentary rocks, proved to be very prospective, yielding favourable factors with a weight of evidence index W+ > 0.24. These salient features were then assigned a combination index for ultimately evaluating the orogenic gold potential under the sedimentary cover. The zones resulting in an optimization of exploration targeting were attributed the highest probability, representing ~1% of the initial volume. La compilation des données géologiques, géophysiques, structurales, et géochimiques et leur intégration au sein d’un modèle géologique 3D a permis d’évaluer le potentiel aurifère dans les environs d’une importante zone de faille archéenne sous couverture protérozoïque. Cette méthodologie a été développée en utilisant le cas de la Faille Cadillac-Larder Lake (FCLL) dans la région de Rouyn-Noranda. Puisque plus de 2000 t d’Or ont été extrait à proximité de la FCLL, l’objectifs des travaux est l’évaluation du potentiel aurifère en profondeur de ce segment. Les teneurs aurifères dans le secteur ont été filtrées et ajusté à une grille régulière de 250 m × 250 m × 250 m afin d’évaluer et de quantifier les relations spatiales existantes entre certaines entités géologiques et les emplacements minéralisés en utilisant la méthode du poids de la preuve. Les failles de direction Est-Ouest, les intersections de failles ainsi que certaines lithologies possédant une porosité primaire importantes comme les certains tuf du Groupe de Blake River et les sédiments du Timiskaming se sont montrés très prospectifs avec des valeurs de W+ > 0.24. Ces entités géologiques ont ensuite été utilisées par le biais d’un indice de combinaison pour évaluer le potentiel en or de type orogénique sous le couvert sédimentaire. Cette méthodologie permet une optimisation des campagnes d’exploration puisque les zones pour lesquelles la probabilité de minéralisations a été évaluée à la plus haute valeur représentent 1% du volume initial."
