The oxide fraction of industrial zinc ash was characterized in terms of chemical and phase composition, leaching behavior in sulfuric acid solutions, and leaching thermal effect. The waste product contained about 68 percent zinc (Zn), 7 percent chlorine (Cl), 2 percent aluminum (Al) and less than 1 percent other metals, such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si). It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc and zinc hydroxide chloride. The dissolution of metals from the zinc ash was determined for solid-to-liquid ratios ranging from 100 to 500 kg/m3, acid concentrations of 10 and 20 percent, and temperatures of 20 and 40 °C. Hatches Creek has been inactive since 1961, but with better metal prices, interest in the field is reviving.The mixed gravity concentrates which were unsalable in 1951 have been experimentally separated into salable wolfram, scheelite, and bismuth-gold concentrates, and a flow sheet incorporating magneticseparation and flotation has been developed.

Bolnore Village in Haywards Heath, Sussex, England, is a large development covering 8 to 10 hectares and expected to provide 1500 homes in five phases to assist in the continuing demand for new homes in the London area. Part of the development required housing on a relatively shallow slope found to have deep seated failure planes which are fairly prevalent in this part of Sussex. Locally the slope angle was around 20 degrees but more typically the gradient was 6 to 7 degrees. There were significant concerns about slope stability and bearing capacity due to pre-existing shear surfaces and the complex geotechnical profile. There was some evidence of instability in the form of residual shear surfaces and tension cracks. The development required terracing the site with retaining structures up to 5 meters in height, formation of access roads and foundations of new houses. The developer Crest Nicholson adopted a collaborative approach with consulting engineers Powell Tolner and specialist geotechnical contractor Keller Ground Engineering. The solution consisted of a novel combination of contiguous bored piling, ground anchors, and both block work and timbacrib retaining walls to ensure the geotechnical issues were adequately addressed within the time and cost constraints set by the team. In situ leaching tests with thiourea as the lixiviant were caried out in two worked-out stopes at the No. 6 shaft at Rand Leases Gold Mining Company. Dissolution rates of 0,9 and 0,7 9 of gold per week per 100 m2 of footwal area were achieved. A major disadvantage of the method seems to be the slow rate of dissolution of the gold, which is probably caused by poor contact and slow mass transfer between the lixiviant and the gold surfaces. Under full-scale application, the loss of lixiviant by leakage could also be a very important factor. Furthermore, the oxidation products of thiourea may 'poison' the activated carbon that is used for the recovery of the gold. The method may therefore be economically viable only in stopes that contain high values of residual gold.

"To develop an alternative metallurgical process for phosphorus removal in the production of solar-grade silicon (SOG-Si), slag treatment of metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si) was conducted, followed by acid leaching. Phosphorus-doped silicon alloy or MG-Si containing certain amounts of phosphorus and calcium was reacted at 1723 K and 1773 K with CaO--CaF2 of several compositions. Phosphorus removal from the molten silicon into the slag phase was confirmed by reduction to phosphide ions, P3-, and phosphate ions, P3-. These ions were separately determined using a wet chemical analysis method developed by ourselves. The highest phosphorus distribution ratio obtained was 2. 7 after reaction for 18 h with 17.5 mass% CaO--CaF2 slag. We then conducted acid leaching of the silicon and achieved removal of a large fraction (over 90 % ) of the phosphorus, which was much higher than that obtained by ordinary oxidizing slag treatment.IntroductionIn recent years, the production of solar cells has been increasing rapidly. Because of this, the demand for solar-grade silicon (SOG-Si) has also been growing rapidly. The development of lower-cost mass production processes is therefore needed to provide silicon feedstock. Phosphorus is one of the impurities in metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si). Because of its large segregation coefficient (kp = 0.35) [l ], it is difficult to remove phosphorus using a solidification refining process. Vacuum melting is considered to be a promising method for removing phosphorous from MG-Si [2], but the issues of high cost and large energy consumption have still to be resolved.Slag treatment is often used to remove impurity elements by oxidizing reactions during general oxidation refining processes. The advent of the space age and its promise of interplanetary flight has prompted new ideas for propulsion systems that will allow maximum energy with minimum fuel weight. The use of cesium as the source of energy for such rocket flights has been found desirable. Theoretical efficiency of a rocket fuel is measured in terms of specific impulse, defined as the number of pounds of thrust per pound of propellant consumed per second. Specific impulse is usually expressed in seconds (the number of seconds for which one pound of fuel would produce one pound of thrust) although it is really a measure of total energy, not of power. The most sophisticated chemical fuels have a specific impulse of 300 to 400 sec; liquid hydrogen heated by nuclear reactor has a specific impulse of 1000 to 1200 sec. Specific impulses as high as 20,000 sec, however, are theoretically attainable with the ion rocket, in which free cesium ions are accelerated across a voltage drop and ejected at high velocity.' Characteristics of the system have been sketched by Boden.2 The desirable properties of an ion propellant are: 1) low ionization potential, 2) low boiling point, and 3) high atomic weight. Alkali metals best fulfill these requirements, and Table I indicates the superiority of cesium. The use of heavy complex ions such as UCl3 is ruled out by their instability and other disadvantages.' Despite its enormous superiority in specific impulse, the ion rocket is inherently low-powered, capable of very small acceleration. Application of ion propulsion will be limited to large rockets and spaceships on missions requiring powered flight for weeks or months and employing a separate chemical propulsion system for escape from the earth's atmosphere where power requirements are large but of brief duration. For example, Kraemer and Larson3 considered the case of an unmanned 25,000-lb pay-load placed in a 300-mile orbit by chemical rockets, proceeding thence by ion propulsion to the vicinity of Mars, where it would go into orbit once again. Calculations provide for 8500 lb of cesium for such a voyage. The question of whether such quantities of cesium will be readily available to the space program does not appear to have been considered by geologists and mining engineers. Present Production and Uses Literature on industrial applications of cesium is scanty. The metal is used in scintillation counters, photocells, infra-red detection devices, and as a "getter" in low-voltage vacuum tubes. Production is sporadic and total figures are not published, but the annual consumption is measured in pounds rather than in tons. The few pollucite deposits known, small as they are, can easily supply the present limited demand for gram or pound lots of cesium. Until recently the price of cesium was $2 to $4 per gram, but according to Chemical Engineering, cesium salts are now available at $13 to $27.50 per lb. Geochemical Distribution As a large alkali ion, the cesium ion accompanies potassium in geological processes and tends to be concentrated in the latest crystallizing fractions of potassium minerals in much the same manner as rubidium. Most of the cesium in igneous rocks, therefore, is in the micas and potash feldspars of granites, and especially in granitic pegmatites. The cesium content rises markedly in the micas of the late by-drothermal replacement stage in complex pegmatite~.' Typically, cesium is only 0.5 to 0.01 times as abundant as rubidium in potassium minerals. Rb', with a radius of 1.47 A, is close enough in size to K' (1.33 A) so that rubidium forms no minerals of its own. Cs+ is so large (1.67 A) that only small concentrations can be taken up in potassium minerals; when cesium is present in solution in larger concentration it forms the mineral pollucite, Cs3-Na2A17Si17O48.3H2O, which is known only in pegmatites. In this study, effects of the inert constituents, such as ash, and the effect of blending coals with differing rank and composition on the plasticity of coal blends were investigated. The reference coal originated from the Zonguldak region, in the north-west part of Turkey. Firstly, the effect of coal ash on the plasticity of Zonguldak coal was determined. Secondly, the relationship between the plastic properties of the individual coals and those of the blended coals were identified. Some important relations were found, related to the characteristics of the individual coals. Ultimately, the manner in which the plasticity of Zonguldak coal was affected by blending with low volatile coals was investigated. Keywords: coal blending, coal plasticity, coke, fluidity, rank.

Crush pillars have been incorporated into a mechanized, low-profile trackless system at South Deep Gold Mine. These pillars had to be designed to fail near the face and to ensure that pillar failure is contained within the pillar, to avoid bursting and the risk of high loads being generated during a seismic event, respectively. PoweRite backfill bags were recommended to maintain the integrity of the pillars; except in the main access drives, where the sidewalls were to be supported on 5.6 mm diameter weldmesh and yielding anchors. The results of a trial site investigation exceeded expectations, showing a residual pillar strength of about 37 MPa for a newly formed pillar and 8 MPa for a pillar subjected to seismicity and a closure of more than 300 mm. The introduction of these pillars has improved the rock mass conditions because of the active nature of the support, compared to the previous passive backfill method. Importantly, the pillars have increased mining efficiencies and improved face availability. A potential cost saving to the mine of R140.9 million could be realized over a period of 10 years.

This chapter summarizes data on crude mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Common-wealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States, and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. Except for the mineral fuel commodities, the detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. In October 1977, responsibility for the collection of data on mineral fuels-coal, petroleum, natural gas, and natural gas liquids-was transferred to the newly created Department of Energy. Although chapters covering these commodities will no longer appear in Volume I of the Minerals Yearbook, quantity and value data have been included in most of these summary tables to maintain statistical consistency in State and national value of overall crude mineral output. This shift in responsibility has also resulted in changes to the composition of the "Nonmetals" and "Mineral Fuels" groups in table 1 and table 2. The commodities-asphalt and related bitumens (natural), carbon dioxide (natural), helium, and peat-have been removed from the "Mineral Fuels" group, and are now included under the "Nonmetals" group. There has been no change in the components of the "Metals" group.

N L Industries, Inc., MacIntyre Development produces ilmenite and magnetite concentrates from its own open pit operation at Tahawus in New York's Adirondack Mountain region. The ilmenite concentrate is used within the company for the production of titanium dioxide pigments and the magnetite concentrate is sold to heavy media processors. Current production is from South Extension mine, loading by by six-yard Marion electric shovels into 85 ton Lectra Haul trucks. Bench heights are 44' and are drilled with a Robbins Rotary 9 7/8" diameter hole on 25' spacing for a yearly production of 3.4 million total tons of rock. The ore deposit occurs in veins dipping on the average at 40 degrees to the west. The ore body, which is divided into three zones, outcrops at surface and continues to depths of 800'. Zone 1 is a high grade band of thickness 150-200' with an Fe/Tio2 ratio of 2. Below this band is Zone 2, a low grade band of thickness 50-100' with an Fe/Tio2 ratio of 2 and beneath that seperated by a band of anorthosite is Zone 3, a high grade band of irregular thickness 50-450' with an Fe/Tio2 ratio of 1.6.

"Water availability is one of the principal parameters in determining the feasibility of mining projects in arid and semi-arid regions. The volumetric water footprint (VWF) of a conceptual model of a copper flotation plant was found to be 2.45 kL/t Cu ore, compared with an actual measurement reported in the literature of 2.72 kL/t Cu ore. The flowsheet considered included mineral processing stages such as crushing, screening, grinding, classification, separation, flotation, thickening and filtration. The effect of a number of variables on the VWF was evaluated, including solid/liquid ratio, feed mass flowrate, ore loss, water loss, moisture content of ore, ore grade and water recycling. The use of seawater with recycling provided the most environmental and economic advantage among several scenarios evaluated. The study assumed a price of $1/kL freshwater, $4/kL for transport over a 200 km distance at 2,000 m altitude and $4/kL for water treatment. The water related cost of the desalinated seawater use scenario was A$493/t Cu concentrate, while the water related costs of fresh water and blended water scenarios were A$308/t and A$268/t Cu concentrate, respectively. The water related cost (fresh water scenario) accounted for 44% to 49% of the entire mining and processing costs that included drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, grinding and concentrating. The total overall cost was A$435/t Cu concentrate for the seawater with recycling, compared to A$451/t Cu concentrate for the fresh water with recycling case.INTRODUCTIONReducing the water footprint (WFP) by utilising alternative water sources has been a focus of mining projects due to increasing concerns about water scarcity and growing energy costs. The global mining industry can expect to experience fresh water shortages in the future, and saline or hyper-saline water may be the only available water source to process minerals in arid regions. Extensive studies on alternative water sources (e.g. seawater, desalinated seawater, blended water) and the reuse of process water have recently been conducted (Moreno, Aral, Cuevas, Monardes, Adaro, Norgate & Bruckard, 2011; Aral, Mead, Cuevas, Davey & Bruckard, 2010). Such studies provide sustainable and economic strategies for mines and concentrators in the arid or semi-arid regions of the world such as in Chile, Peru, Indonesia, and Portugal. More work, however, is needed to confirm water consumption data for different base metal flowsheets and use this data to develop water models that can lead to reduced WFPs and more sustainable water usage in the mining industry."

The stabilization of austenite in Fe-Ni alloys against martensitic transformation after reversion has been attributed' to the lattice imperfections remaining from previous transformation. More recently, however, such stabilization has been associatedzy3 with compositional changes which occur in martensite during slow heating. Dislocation arrangements in deformed austenitic stainless steels strongly influence transformation to martensite on quenching.4 Therefore, it is of interest to observe the transformation behavior of stainless steel after reversion, especially since previous studies have been confined to Fe-Ni alloys. The transformation-product morphology also differs in the two iron-alloy systems;6 plate martensite forms in the latter while stainless steel transforms to lath-type martensite. Samples of Fe-16 wt pct Cr-12 wt pct Ni (maximum C + N = 0.005 wt pct, 0 = 0.02 wt pct), prepared by vacuum melting and casting from high-purity components, were annealed at 900°C for 24 hr, after cold rolling to produce a 40-p grain diameter. The M, temperature of this alloy is -80°C and samples are fully austenitic after annealing. The amount of martensite present after quenching, annealing, and requenching was determined magnetically, to within 0.01 wt pct, using a vibrating specimen magnetometer. Nearly 14 pct of martensite forms during the initial quench in 1 min at -196°C. Two-min and 2-hr anneals were done in air and in evacuated quartz capsules, respectively. All specimens were electro-polished before making the magnetic measurements.

In the Summer of 2011, emergency repairs to the Jefferson Memorial North Plaza and Seawall were completed. These repairs were necessitated by settlement and lateral movement of the seawall and North Plaza which prompted the National Park Service (NPS) to initiate an investigation as to the possible causes of the movement, and commission a design for its mitigation. Information gathered from extensive instrumentation on site led to the design of a movement mitigation scheme that included demolition of the Ashlar Seawall and reconstruction of a new seawall. The new seawall foundation is an A-Wall consisting of vertical caissons and battered pipe piles connected to the seawall itself. The scheme provides resistance to future vertical and lateral movement of the North Plaza and the new seawall. Repair to the seawall and plaza began in December 2009, and was completed in August 2011. This paper discusses the mechanisms believed to be responsible for settlement and lateral movement, summarizes the procedure followed for design of the mitigation, and describes the construction methods and some challenges faced during the repair.

In the proposed criterion for coal a distinction is made between brittle and "psuedo-ductile" failure. This criterion is the basis for the development of new equations for coal pillar strength, including a transition from brittle fracture to pseudo-ductile yielding. In addition the equations obtained allow the critical minimum pillar dimensions to be calculated to avoid "catastrophic" and "ultimate failure".The validity of these formulae can be tested by comparing their results with pillar case histories derived from the literature.
