Amorphous silica deposits have been identified at Tikitere and Taheke near Rotorua. Two areas at Tikitere have been surface sampled and drilled to establish a resource of amorphous silica in excess of one million tonnes. A pilot plant was established to develop a process to manufacture a high quality super pozzolanic material. This development process took two years before a commercial product was introduced to the construction industry in 1996. The amorphous silica product, marketed as Microsilica 600, is used as a pozzolanic material to produce high quality strong and durable concrete, sprayed tunnel linings, mortars and grouts. Microsilica 600 has been used locally and exported to 11 countries.

Paper presented at the UK minerals industry conference held in Leeds, UK, 3-5 April 1995. A description is given of the approach that has been taken to the design of the 550 000 000 t superquarry with a planned life of 60 years that is proposed for development. The quarry has been designed to replicate a corrie and a sea loch and will include excavated slopes more than 570 m high. The main geological and physical controls on the layout and the choice of development method are outlined. The operation phasing is presented and the geotechnical constraints on slope design and the feasibility of alternative quarry limits are discussed. Environmental considerations have been dominant in planning and the quarry has been specifically designed for closure

"Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) performed comparative testing of six hollow cone water sprays from three manufacturers: static swirl chamber sprays from Spraying Systems (BD-3, BD-5) and Steinen-Hahn (SH-3, SH-5), and movable swirl chamber sprays from Repair King (RK-3, RK-5). Water flow testing was completed at three operating pressures (60, 80, and 100 psig) where both sets of sprays (3-series and 5-series) produced similar water flows, deviating less than 8% from the average water flow rate at each pressure. Airflow induction testing was completed at 80 psig using a hot wire anemometer to take air velocity measurements upstream of the spray nozzles. Respirable dust capture efficiency testing was completed in a 14.5-m3 (512-ft3) closed system dust chamber at 80 psig. The dust capture efficiency ranged from 7.2% to 9.9% for the 3-series nozzles, and from 5.3% to 7.1% for the 5-series nozzles. Sprays were also analyzed using a Cloud Aerosol and Precipitation Spectrometer (CAPS), which uses light scattering to count and size the airborne water droplets from each spray. In both cases, Spraying Systems sprays produced the largest mean droplet size, followed by Steinen-Hahn and Repair King sprays, respectively. INTRODUCTION Coal mine worker overexposure to respirable coal dust continues to be a problem in underground coal mining operations in the United States. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) now requires coal mine worker respirable dust exposure to be no more than 1.5 mg/m3 average over the actual working shift (CFR 30-70.100, 2016). Potential overexposure to respirable dust by continuous miner, roof bolter, and shuttle car operators may be prevented if proper safety and health practices are implemented as detailed in the mine’s ventilation plan (CFR 30-75.371, 2016). Water sprays are a necessary component of an underground coal mine ventilation plan. They are important on the continuous mining unit for moving air and removing respirable coal dust from the breathable airstream. MSHA requires underground coal mines to include the number, types, location, orientation, operating pressure, and flow rate of operating water sprays in their mine ventilation plans (CFR 30-75.371, 2016). Water sprays can become clogged, requiring the sprays to be properly checked, maintained, and replaced in order to continue meeting the ventilation requirements described in the mine ventilation plan.In an effort to eliminate the problems with spray clogging, Repair King has developed self-cleaning movable swirl chamber hollow cone water sprays (RK-3, RK-5). The spray’s movable swirl chamber is designed to only open when water pressure is applied to the spray nozzle, preventing the nozzle from clogging. Anti-clogging sprays could improve mine production by reducing the amount of time spent servicing clogged sprays. Also, these sprays could improve health and safety of miners since they would continue to suppress and capture dust and continue to move airflow at the face, while a clogged spray loses this ability until it is cleaned or replaced manually. The objective of this research was to assess the comparability of the Repair King sprays with the most commonly used sprays in underground coal mines using performance criteria. An assessment of the sprays self-cleaning or anti-clogging capability was not conducted."

Various styles of gold mineralisation pose problems during sampling because of their complex gold grade distribution and presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation forms the basis of resource estimates. The design of a sampling and assaying protocol must be based on a thorough understanding of the mineralisation in question, which should include consideration of gold particle size and mass distribution. The proportion of coarse gold within samples has a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assaying. Choice of preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if sampling errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, often understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and LeachWELL. Proper application of the Theory of Sampling reduces errors during collection, preparation and assaying. A quality control/quality assurance program must be implemented and critically assessed. A case study from the Ballarat mine is presented, which is characterised by substantial quantities of coarse-gold hosted in quartz veins. Diamond core drilling is the key input into resource delineation. A number of different sampling and assay options have been trialled over the recent project history. The current sampling protocol utilises whole drill core, using LeachWELL assays after logging and photography.CITATION:Dominy, S C, 2017. "Very low strength alluvial peat soil was found under two old drainage galleries with just 4.3m cover above a twin tunnel due to be excavated by a 10.6m diameter EPB Shield for São Paulo Metro’s Line 5. Alignment was required to strengthen soil and drive the TBM through safely without damaging the galleries. The design included six levels of self-drilling forepoling with lengths up to 15m, using 100 mm-diameter SCH160 metal tubing and injection bulbs with estimated 0.20m diameter. Two 6m-diameter circular shafts were excavated along the shield-tunnel axis, one each side of the galleries, and forepoling fanned out under gallery foundations. Given the peculiar soil and confined working space, more data were needed for correct drilling geometry. Ground mass treatment was successfully designed and executed and galleries were fitted with instruments to enable the shield’s advance. DESCRIPTION São Paulo Metro’s Line 5 (aka Lilas or purple line) is adding 11 stations along an 11.5km extension and three EPB TBMs are being used simultaneously (three EPBs on the same job for the first time in Brazil) with one of them excavating a large cross- section twin-track tunnel. Currently the largest work-in-progress for São Paulo Metro, this project has been divided into seven lots and 9km are already operational. This study refers to Lot 6 where the 10.6m - diameter EPB shield excavation is only 4.3m below two galleries running through a 10m layer of very soft peat soil in an old alluvial riverside region ringed by major roads. After recent filling, this area (Parque das Bicicletas) was used for recreation, although temporarily it has become a construction site. This paper will describe the original basic design; precautions in relation to the structural condition of the galleries after inspection; the problem of absence of data for their foundations; subsoil bore tests; evolution of the engineering design for the galleries and conditioning and reinforcing the soft soil below the galleries to ensure safe advance of the EPB shield, and finally the successful outcome of the solution used."

Over the last decade, Fenway Park has undergone annual improvements to modernize the facility for players and fans. These renovations include the Monster Seats, the Right Field Roof expansion, a new pavilion behind home plate, expansion of the Red Sox clubhouse, additional roof seating, and concourse improvements. Retrofitting the historic ballpark to bring it up to current standards required installation of foundations to support the new structural loads for each of the alteration projects. This required evaluation of existing conditions, and in many cases augmentation of the foundations at existing columns to accommodate the structural changes to the park. New foundations, generally consisting of drilled-in micropiles, were installed in numerous configurations and conditions. Since 2003, a total of 215 drilled-in micropiles have been installed to augment various columns around the park. The micropiles range in capacity between 40 and 70 tons and are installed through Fill and Organic Soils and embedded into the dense Glaciofluvial Sand and Gravel layer. Issues and learning related to the foundation augmentation include schedule constraints (work is typically conducted during the off-season and schedule is very aggressive), encountering old/abandoned utilities or foundations, ventilation of equipment, and management of spoils during micropile installation.

Dr David Greenwood opened the first technical session of the conference by highlighting the diverse nature of the papers in this session but drawing attention to the common theme that each solved a particular problem. PAPER 1.1 Tony Elliott introduced his paper on deep mix-in-place soil/cement stabilisation by stressing its simplicity. The engineering solution adopted at Elland was detailed in his paper and had formed the key to success of the project. The process itself is not widely used or known in the UK, although it has the potential to achieve significant benefits, subject to proper engineering control being exercised. It was explained that although the concept was not new, development of the technique for soil modification was relatively recent. The alternatives to mechanical mixing are injection, which is very dependent on soil type, site geometry, etc, and jet grouting; both processes are soil-responsive, and not easily monitored or programmed, difficulties which can largely be overcome by mixing. To achieve this at depths to say 30m requires high-powered, high torque machines and has resulted in significant equipment development.

U. S. Steel's Oak Grove Mine experienced several top hinge failures on their caving shields. It was determined that all the caving shields needed to be replaced with new caving shields before more thilures occurred. The cost and amount of time needed for several scenarios of caving shield change outs were compared. This paper discusses how Oak Grove Mine decided to and did change 126 caving shields in six specially designed jig stations underground during a longwall move using their own UMWA employees.

"High demand for metals is driving the exploitation of lower grade and more complex orebodies. These projects are often the initiatives of junior mining companies with limited financial resources. In addition, existing operations seek to enhance revenue from their existing metal recovery operations, through the production of value-added by-product metals and chemicals. Typically, hydrometallurgical circuits, often with novel chemistry, are required to exploit these new ores, to produce the multiplicity of products that will make a marginal project economical, or to increase the product range of an existing operation. Often, the mineral processing engineer is given the task of coordinating the development of a back-end hydrometallurgical flowsheet for their mineral processing project. This paper discusses the objectives that companies have when they commission the operation of a hydrometallurgical pilot plant. The paper goes on to enumerate some of the principal differences between mineral processing and hydrometallurgical pilot plants and the effect these have on the design, operability and potential pilot plant outcomes. Important factors include working with chemically reactive solutions and pulps, elevated temperatures operation, changing rheological properties of slurries, the complexity of integrated circuit flowsheets with long hold-up times and multiple recycle streams, and the need in some cases for extreme attention to purity and cleanliness. Examples will be drawn from the extensive experience base of SGS Minerals Services at the Lakefield site, in piloting both mineral processing and hydrometallurgical process flowsheets.INTRODUCTIONWe are currently experiencing a period of strong growth in the demand for metals. This in turn is turning the spotlight on a great many smaller mining companies and mining promotion ventures trying to tap into the rising metal demand. Some of these companies want to develop their properties and recover metals while others want to develop to the point that a major company will take an interest, or in some cases buy them out completely.With the heightened interest in metals, many orebodies that have been known about for years are being reconsidered for exploitation. Often, the reason they have not been developed to date is because of difficult metallurgy and marginal grades leading to marginal economic viability. In both cases the key that unlocks the resources is often the application of a novel metallurgical flowsheet, often a hydrometallurgical flowsheet."

The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. It is shown that a differential colorimetric technique can be used as a routine method for the estimation of titanium in beach sands, and their ore dressing products. The method will tolerate the presence of most of the other elements usually found in beach sands. The accuracy is shown to be within the limits of ±0ò31 per cent for concentrates containing more than 95 per cent titanium dioxide and ±1 per cent for tailings containing 0ò2 per cent titanium dioxide. The method is described for use with a Hilger "Spekker" absorptiometer.

The Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) (a French Government-sponsored geological and mining agency), through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the BRGM have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment, some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consideration of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of 'mineral-geochemistry', and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

A review is presented of the furnace cooling system design and operating developments since the initial furnace start-up in January 2001 of the Chambishi DC-arc furnace to produce ferrocobalt alloy. The furnace operating conditions present a number of challenges to the furnace designers and operators, in particular, to provide a sustainable lining that can withstand the highly corrosive siliceous slag (roughly 50% SiO2). This is exacerbated by the dual requirement of operating this slag in a relatively highly superheated state (?T ?400°C when tapped at 1550°C) to ensure that the ferroalloy can be tapped (estimated 1370°C alloy liquidus temperature) prior to atomization. The core design challenge occurs at the alloy-slag interface, where a single refractory type cannot simultaneously meet the dual requirement of both adequate alloy and slag corrosion compatibility. Progression by the fourth furnace campaign to involve a retrofit of the bath sidewall to HATCH high-intensity, water-cooled, copper Waffle coolers and tap blocks is described. This involves operation of the entire slag bath, the slag-alloy interface and a portion of the alloy within a more chemically compatible refractory/slag (and possibly at times even an alloy) freeze-lining. Due to the high furnace power density employed (up to 500 kW/m2 hearth area), coupled with the large slag superheat needed, the resulting imposed peak bath sidewall heat fluxes are substantial, especially in the alloy (typically averaging 170 kW/m2), and on occasion have exceeded 1000 kW/m2. The performance of the HATCH Copper Waffle coolers under such aggressive process pyrometallurgical conditions is described. Aspects of the design and especially operating strategies to effect sustained production at up to 38 MW power input are also discussed.

The estimation of the spatial variation of the b-value of the Gutenberg- Richter relationship is important for both the general interpretation of the mechanism of rock mass response and seismic hazard assessment. The interpretation of b-value as a parameter of rock mass response is discussed in this paper. The methods applied to evaluate the spatial variation of b-value and the algorithm for obtaining the magnitude of completeness and b-value for subsets of data are presented with some verification analyses. The algorithms presented enable the automation of a spatial evaluation of b-value.

Navachab Mine experiences difficulties with pit wall stability in certain areas of the mine. The main reason for the instability is the fact that the geology comprises many joints and faults. Blasting, without impacting negatively on the stability of the pit walls, poses a major challenge.

"Grout backfill strategy for a particular subsurface concrete tunnel (~4.9km long, 3.5m in diameter, carrying 20” gas pipeline) was based on achieving 1:100 slope of the fill in order to progressively fill the tunnel, in a series of 350m section. Grout rheology, particularly its non-Newtonian and thixotropic behavior, determines the final fill slope for given backfill strategy. The objective of this study was to simulate the two-phase grout mix backfill process using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and determine the slope of the fill to validate and optimize the backfill strategy. Three dimensional CFD study showed that for a 500m long tunnel section with a single injection point of grout, given its rheology, it will likely keep flowing without filling the 500m section height wise. Design optimization for filling was carried out using two dimensional studies to make the backfill process “slope independent” by incorporating a 2.5m high bulkhead at ~1,000m. INTRODUCTION As part of a gas field development a 20” onshore gas pipeline is required from the landfall site to the processing terminal some 8km inland. At the landfall site the gas pipeline is routed in a ~5km underground tunnel underneath a bay. For operational reasons and planning consents as well as to mitigate environmental impact based on an environmental impact study, once the gas pipeline and the associated services and spares have been installed, the subsurface gas tunnel will be fully grouted. There will be no permanent access to the tunnel after construction is completed and the site compounds have been reinstated once works are complete. One of the key requirements is that “full grouting of the tunnel” is desired. The grouting material used is a non-Newtonian and thixotropic fluid mixture of bentonite, cement, plasticizer, retarder/stabilizer and water. The tunnel is filled progressively in 350m sections using a combination of existing and new pipework assuming the grout rheology will yield a fill slope of 1:100 in a 350m section. The proposed grouting system used one pump at the grouting compound to pump the grout into the tunnel using the existing tunneling pipework. For the longer runs a second booster pump was used in series to pump the grout to its final discharge location. The filling process is controlled via a system of flow meters, pressure transmitters and a tunnel CCTV system."

El presente texto describe la reología de la Pulpa a nivel de química de superficie y así sugerir las alternativas a los problemas que impiden poder operar en forma continua y su capacidad de diseño la Planta de Flotación Diferencial de Cobre – Molibdeno. Asimismo, es necesario definir una solución a escala de laboratorio, la cual debe ser validada con pruebas industriales e implementarla en planta. La estrategia debe garantizar la continuidad de la operación de la Planta de flotación de Molibdeno con cualquier tipo de mineral y que no presente compactación la pulpa. Finalmente, se devbe agarantizar el procesamiento de toda la producción de la planta de cobre en la planta de flotación diferencial de cobre molibdeno.
