A thermochemical model is developed to study the two-stage smelting reduction process for ironmaking without post-combustion. Steady-state multi-material and heat balance equations are solved simultaneously to study the effect of metallisation, slag basicity, coal rank and heat loss on consumption rates of coal, ore, flux and oxygen and production rate of slag to produce hot metal of a given composition, tapped at a given temperature. The model is applied to the commercial data for a COREX-plant producing a wide range of hot metal compositions, tapped at different temperatures. The computed rates of coal, slag, flux, ore and oxygen were found to be close to the reported ones, but an exact match could not be obtained. It is found that a four per cent change in metallisation brings changes the coal rate by five per cent, flux rate by six per cent, slag rate by eight per cent and oxygen rate by 13 per cent, while a ten per cent change in basicity changes the coal rate by ten per cent, flux rate by 13 per cent and oxygen rate by 22 per cent. Further, it is found that an increase in metallisation decreases the coal rate and export gas. At a given per cent metallisation, the coal rate and the export gas are lowest for anthracite compared to all other types of coal.

This paper is in two parts. The first covers the evolution of dredging leading to the development of the æNZ typeÆ large dredge and the second, current alluvial gold recovery practice in NZ. NZ was the first country in the world to adapt the bucket-ladder dredge to alluvial gold recovery. Between 1857 and 1907, gold worth (at today's NZ price of about NZ$600/ounce*) over $11 billion was exported û from a country with well under one million people at that time. Over 200 small dredges operated, mostly on the Clutha River, around the turn of the century, however by 1940, only 20 or so large machines remained, and the last of these, the 4000 ton 'Kanieri' ceased operations three years ago. Recently recognition of the superior digging power of the hydraulic backhoe and reintroduction of the simple 'trommel and riffleÆ plant with about 80 m3 /hour capacity has led to a proliferation of static and floating plants, there being at least 50 currently in operation on the West Coast and in Otago. There are signs however, that the process of evolution of such small unsophisticated plants into larger, more efficient units has begun again. * At the time of writing (October 1984) NZ$l. 00 = US 50ó. This report summarizes Bureau of Mines experiments in purifying sulfate leach liquors, which were prepared from low-tenor beryl concentrates by modifying the Degussa process. The leach liquor was prepared from a beryl concentrate containing 2.7 percent BeO by (1) sintering the beryl concentrate with limestone in a rotary kiln at about 1,150° C. and by (2) treating the sinter first with sulfuric acid and then with water to form and extract beryllium sulfate. About 80 percent of the beryllium was dissolved. The resulting leach liquor contained 2.4 grams of BeO, 20 grams of Al203, and 6 grams of Fe203 per liter. The laboratory solution contained much more aluminum and iron than a solution derived from treating 10 percent BeO concentrate, which is the standard raw material used by industry. Tests were made to determine the behavior of the solution toward alum purification and limestone neutralization both of which were employed industrially in conventional Degussa procedure.

Declining metal prices over the last few years have reduced the number of new metallurgical plants being built and limited opportunities for introducing new processes. However, technological advances are still being made. With increasing economic pressures, the emphasis is now on reducing unit costs by making equipment larger and through use of technologies with lower operating costs. This trend can be seen in the increasing size of grinding mills and flotation cells used in recent plant designs and in the adoption of HPGR crushing as an alternative to SAG milling. Few new technologies achieve widespread introduction until there are clear economic or operational drivers. These might currently include: ò          increasingly stringent environmental standards; ò          availability of exotic materials for equipment construction; ò          increasingly sophisticated instrumentation and control systems; ò          the need to treat increasingly refractory oretypes; and ò          the length of supply routes to many new plants. As a result of these drivers, a number of new and revitalised technologies will get increasing prominence in the design of new operations, such as: ò          use of ultrafine milling equipment such as MIM's Isamill for treatment of refractory gold ore concentrates; ò          use of thiourea as an alternative for cyanide in sensitive locations; ò          novel hydrometallurgical routes for treating base metal ores in remote locations; ò          paste thickening for tailings deposition; and intensive cyanidation of gravity concentrate

A typical three-phase submerged-arc furnace for production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon has arc currents ~100 kA, phase voltages ~100 V and total furnace power ~10 - 60 MW. The arcs burn in gas filled cavities or "craters", where the main atomic components of the plasma mixture are silicon, oxygen and carbon. Two quite different simulation models for high-current AC arcs have been developed: the simple Channel Arc Model (CAM), and the more sophisticated Magneto-Fluid-Dynamic Model (MFD). These models have been described extensively and results reported at INFACON-8 and INFACON-9, respectively. The coupling between the arcs and the AC power source is described by a complete three-phase Electric Circuit Model. Recent numerical modelling studies of industrial AC arcs show that the boundary conditions at the cathode and anode are critical for the simulation results. A novel Cathode/Anode Sub-Model for high-current AC arcs that treats both cathode and anode indicates a completely different cathode behaviour than previously assumed. A cathode spot which serves a high-current electric arc is shown to be dominated by the energy impact from the arc. This leads to lower cathode fall voltage than obtained from previously developed models. The anode fall voltage is negative, as the main function of the potential barrier is to repel plasma electrons. The cathode spot is diffuse in the sense that the arc in fact contracts away from the cathode. Simulation results are compared to measurements on both industrial furnaces and smaller scale pilot furnaces. An important conclusion, supported by our arc studies, is that the arc length in silicon metal and ferrosilicon furnaces does not exceed 15 cm and the arc may burn anywhere on the electrode, not necessarily beneath the electrode tip.

The conditions of a stability of metallurgical films on a surface of solid on the basis of classical regularities of a thermodynamics are considered. For specific conditions of metallurgical processes the basic equations relevant to non-metallic inclusions (product of steel killing) migration and transfer through the interface boundary of metal-slag are obtained. The basic criteria equations of conditions of stability of metallurgical dispersed systems are developed in view of films formation. The probable thermodynamics reason of wetting due to formation of stable films are discussed. The experimental measurement of thin and thick films elastic resistance for metallurgical systems are carried out and the results are discussed. The presence of a wetting thick film increases stability of dispersed systems (facilitates an inverse implication of non-metallic inclusion in a melt) due to a barrier effect of wetting films. The quantitative evaluations of non-metal inclusion stability for steel in contact with any metallurgical slag are carried out. The results are in accordance with technological experience. A detailed study of the capital investment and production cost for copper electrowinning plants shows that significant savings in both can be achieved by increasing the current density. From the economic analysis it is determined that the optimum current density which will result in lowest capital investment and lowest operating cost is between 60 A/sq. ft. and 70 A/sq. ft., or at least three times as high as the Conventionally employed current density. The specific investment, expressed as $/ton-year, is found to be a function of both the current density and plant capacity and has a minimum value at the optimum current density. Empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the capital investment and operating cost for plants of any production capacity operating at any current density.

Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. These included an improvement in Australia's labor difficulties, the return of Polish coal to Western European markets, and lower oil prices. In 1982, US port facilities were improved and expanded, and more efficient methods for scheduling foreign vessels were implemented. As a result, high volume coal shipments to US ports were routinely loaded and dispatched unhampered by bottlenecks that plagued East Coast ports in 1981. The NC State University Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) and Waste Reduction Partners (WRP) of the Land of Sky Regional Council joined efforts in 2000 to initiate a technically sound and practical program for the management of high-volume coal combustion by-products (CCBs) in North Carolina. The accumulation of CCBs from coal burning boilers throughout the state of North Carolina posed a substantial storage problem, and the area was overripe for an effective management program, which would be environmentally sustainable. In particular, the public utility generators had filled storage ponds on their properties, and the storage overload had grown to critical proportions. Much the same situation existed for paper mill biosolids, which were stored on site in landfill cells along with daily output of CCBs from the mill boilers. A conversion process via the patented pyro-process12 (US Patent No. 5,342,442) to produce synthetic light weight aggregates (LWA) from CCBs and paper mill sludge was conceived to process large quantities of both these waste materials. MRL and WRP initiated and formed a consortium that brought together academia, private industry and state agencies to evaluate the production of LWA by the pyro-process. The industry partners included representatives from the power companies, industrial ash generators, expediters for coal ash products, as well as concrete block manufacturers. It was important to welcome interested parties from not only the western North Carolina area and other parts of the state but also from neighboring states including Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia. Membership of this consortium evolved during the intervening years to include the following participants and supporters: Progress Energy Carolinas; Duke Energy; Santee Cooper; Full Circle Solutions; Land-of-Sky Regional Council; NC Department of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance; Ecusta Business Development Center; Blue Ridge Paper Products; Jackson Paper and Manufacturing Company; Miller Perlite; Appalachian Products; General Shale Brick; Metromont Materials; Small Business Technology Development Center of the University of North Carolina system and North Carolina State University The initial development program conducted at the Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) was to formulate an acceptable LWA product, which fulfilled user specifications for light weight concrete block and structural concrete application. Support work and program coordination efforts were furnished by retired technical volunteers in WRP. The work advanced steadily, using proven technologies well established in the mineral industry, to generate a very satisfactory LWA. The consortium then concluded that a more comprehensive CCB conversion program would have more appeal for full scale manufacture and commercialization, if a variety of products from CCB separation were generated. This product assortment would include bottom ash, low carbon fly ash, recovered carbon of high purity, as well as the synthetic LWA. The bottom ash would serve the concrete block market, the fly ash was in demand for ready-mix concrete, and the high carbon product could be pelletized and used as a fuel for reburn or by the steel industry, and the LWA was a sought-after component for light weight concrete applications. After scouting all these potential markets and finding them to be viable, the consortium then inaugurated an integrated pilot plant program for the CCB separation and conversion. The plan was organized in three (3) parts: (1) Phase I ? bench scale evaluation studies (2) Phase II continuous pilot plant evaluation and (3) Phase III ? conceptual commercial plant design including marketing efforts and attraction of business entrepreneurs to build a full scale manufacturing plant. Phase II would serve to validate the process in a continuous mode and produce substantial quantities of products for preliminary marketing efforts and for demonstration-of-use purposes. The consortium agreed to the name, CAROLINA ASH PRODUCTS, (CAP), for the integrated pilot plant program. The products generated might be designated with the CAP label as: bottom ash would be named CAP Granules, low carbon fly ash would become CAP Ash, recovered high carbon product would be CAP Carbon, and LWA would have the name CAP Stone. Phase II of the program processed 20 tons (18 t) of ponded ash from Progress Energy storage at a rate of 600 lb (271 kg) of raw ash per hour with favorable results. PRELIMINARY STUDIES Prior to committing laboratory research and development effort as well as support and coordination activities to this program, it was necessary to determine (1) the level of need for a freshly launched CCB reutilization program in this state and (2) what degree of versatility was necessary for such a process. State agency records and a survey of recent boiler operations indicated that in the state of North Carolina at least 77 facilities manage CCBs from their boiler operations. Despite continuing development efforts in more eastern parts of the state, the use of CCBs for commercial applications has not increased to a level which alleviates the need to store vast quantities in private monofills on the generator?s property. More than 1.25 million tons (1.13 million t) of CCBs are landfilled in NC annually, with 300,000 tons (271,985 t) per year generated in western NC alone. Many different boiler types, which span both very old units and those that are modern and efficient, were to be found. These included stoker-fired units, pulverized coal boilers, slag-tap furnaces, and fluidized bed combustion boilers covering a range of sizes. Any systems designed to separate CCB components from all these sources and convert them to useful secondary products would need broad processing latitude and flexibility. Up to the present there has been a paucity of research done in the western part of the state to find productive alternatives to storage in landfills. With tipping fees in our largest landfill now approaching $40 per ton ($44 per t) and escalating transportation fees (about $200 per truckload up to 40 tons, traveling a distance of 25 miles), the problem has become urgent both economically and ecologically. A well-designed, integrated wet process for CCB separation into value-added products had much potential to be less expensive than landfilling as well as to provide saleable materials with acceptable profit margins. These preliminary investigations also revealed that other major waste streams, in particular paper mill sludge and municipal and animal waste biosolids were important candidates for priority attention. Since these biosolids could furnish the organic component of a synthetic LWA product, they could be consumed as part of the same program. This added interest value to a growing list of partners to support and participate in the program.

The Ilo Refinery was commissioned in 1975, with a cathode production capacity of 150,000 tpy. In 1994, Southern Perú Copper Corporation (SPCC) purchased the Refinery from Minero Perú SA. Subsequently, in November 1999, Grupo Mexico acquired control of Southern Perú. The anode production facility is located at the Ilo Refinery. A number of effective operating and quality control practices have been developed that have improved anode quality, as well as increasing anode production capacity to 350,000 tpy. These, and other optimization actions have allowed for a current density increase from 213 A/m2 to 275 A/m2, while maintaining current efficiency at 98% and sustaining the high quality of the cathode. The paper will outline the scope of operational practices in the Anode Plant and provide some discussion on the Ilo Smelter modernization project, and the resulting impact on the existing anode plant.

You probably haven't all had the opportunity of reading it, but you very soon will. I found it interesting to note that the results predicted were surpassed in the operation of the plant to date. The actual results obtained are significantly good, I think. Any process which, in this country, increases production and decreases costs, is to be welcomed, particularly when it is so necessary for South Africa almost to bend over backwards to utilise every avenue available in order to increase the scope of the production for overseas' markets, of her metallurgical and mineral potential. In lighter vein-and there is no reason why we should always be so serious-I am glad to see that, in a scientific journal like this, such words as the American word 'crud' which I have been picked out about so often, because my grandchildren use it, is now given an aura of respectability. Thank you very much, Mr Meyburgh, for an interesting paper. We have a long list of contributors, and I am not going to waste any more time. At present the source of virgin iron for steel produced in New Zealand is titanomagnetite extracted from titaniferous beachsands. Some of these beachsand deposits contain extractable quantities of ilmenite as well as titanomagnetite and both minerals represent challenging sources of vanadium and titanium products in addition to iron. This study looks at some theoretical aspects of smelting these ores directly with coal rather than with electric power, and takes into consideration the properties of the raw materials, the thermodynamics of possible process routes and the background of the economics involved.

The kinetics of loading of gold from bromide solution onto an anion exchange resin, PAZ-4, were investigated in a batch stirred reactor. The initial loading rate was described mathematically by a first-order reaction rate equation. The effect of agitation speed, temperature, resin particle size, resin concentration, initial concentration of gold and bromine in solution on the rate was investigated. The model described fairly accurately the loading process in terms of the variables investigated. The rate constant for the initial loading ranged from 0.5 to 1.3 x10-3 sec-1 and the half-time was 9.3 to 56 minutes. The initial rate constant increased with increasing temperature with an activation energy of 15.7 kJ/mole (3.8 kcal/mole). The rate constant was directly proportional to the concentration of the resin in solution. The subsequent reduction reaction was also modeled by the first-order rate equation and the apparent rate constant was estimated to be 3.0 x 10-6 sec-1 with a half-time of about 44 hours.

This paper briefly describes the shaft, including sinking, steel sets and their installation, shaft equipment and winders.INTRODUCTIONThe New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. Service Shaft is a vertical concrete-lined circular shaft, 20 ft. in diameter with -steel sets spaced at 12-ft. centres. The diameter of 20 ft. was established as the minimum that would enable the shaft both to house the proposed hoisting and service equipment and to satisfy ventilation requirements as a downcast airway. The 12-ft. set spacing was based on South African practice in similar types of shafts.The shaft extends from the surface to 28 ft. below No. 22 Level, a total depth of 3,194 ft. Sinking was commenced in September 1946, and equipping completed in January 1955. Initially the shaft was sunk and concrete-lined to a depth of 52 ft., using a stiff-legged crane and clam-shell grab for mucking. Operations were suspended at this depth to allow the installation of the steel sinking head-frame, winders and ancillary equipment.Sinking and concreting were recommenced after four months and continued to a depth of 1,035 ft. 6 in., where the shaft connected with a pilot opening. The concrete lining was poured as sinking progressed and was piped from the surface to this depth, after which all concrete was lowered in buckets and discharged through a distributor suspended in the shaft. A cycle of stripping to the pilot opening and concreting was continued until the shaft reached No. 22 Level. From this level the remaining 28 ft. was sunk full size. All plats were cut and concreted as sinking progressed.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research to evaluate explosion blast effects on mine ventilation stoppings at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). After mine explosion accidents, MSHA conducts investigations to determine the cause(s) as a means to mitigate or eliminate future occurrences. As part of these post-explosion investigations, the condition of underground stoppings, including the debris from damaged stoppings, are documented as evidence of the strength and the direction of the explosion forces. The LLEM data showed that a total pressure of 52 kPa (7.6 psi) destroyed the solid concrete block stopping, ~36 kPa (~5.2 psi) destroyed the hollow-core concrete block stopping, and 9 kPa (1.3 psi) destroyed the steel panel stopping. These results will assist investigators in determining the explosion forces that destroy or damage stoppings during actual coal mine explosions.

Trends in Test Filtration to Respond to Decreasing Sample Size There has been a steady decline in the quantity of samples available for testwork when developing new mining processes due to the maturing mining technology and the increasing costs of pilot testing. Larox, a supplier of filtration equipment and its co-operation partner Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) have been actively developing new equipment, testing methodologies and tools to plan test campaigns with the objective of being able to determine the optimum filtration technology and the parameters for sizing full scale equipment with a minimum sample size. With smaller sample sizes, the test scale diminishes from pilot scale to bench scale, and the small equipment size has implications for scale-up. Redesigning the equipment to simulate full scale equipment rather than to match filtration theory has led to some interesting developments. Comparisons between bench scale equipment and production units help identify the limitations of bench scale testing. The nature of filtration is such that it is unreliable to estimate filterability theoretically, and different testing methodologies have been investigated to be able to test the feasibility of filtration from samples as small as few grams. While not optimising the filtration technology, these methodologies provide an adequate level of accuracy for scoping studies. Together with improvements in equipment, a software tool has been developed to reduce the number of tests necessary to optimise filtration technology and parameters for sizing.

Sequential excavation of the Beacon Hill Station has been accomplished in highly complex and inter-layered sand, silt, and clay soils with multiple perched groundwater tables. Successful excavation has required the installation of a deep dewatering well system used to depressurize sand layers above and within the excavated tunnel faces. In addition, the presence of sand layers in the crown of the Platform Tunnels required jet grouting at depths of up to 49m (160-ft). This paper discusses the design intent, construction, and effectiveness of the dewatering system and the selective jet grouting of sand horizons and shaft break outs for the successful construction of the deepest SEM station excavation ever completed in the United States.
