"The article highlights the new procedure of choosing special methods of disintegration for very complicated rare ores. Especially, there is a complex approach to criteria of comparing different types of crashing machines. Criteria are as follows: degree of crashing, degree of grinding, degree of slime creation and the new creations criteria for selection. The procedure is tested on tantalium and zelestinium ore. A new methods was shown the preference impact crashing machine MD-7 for zelestinium ore. In product of crashing 0,050 mm size are 9.4 %, 0,005 mm size – 2.5 %.This is gut result, and show the best indexes of slime creation. The check of the proposed new methods was done when comparing the crushing of tantalium ores of the Otboynoe deposit in cone inertial and centrifugal impact crushers and roller press. A research was conducted different crashing machines under laboratory and semi-industrial conditions. Different operation modes of crushers were also checked. The comparison of the crushing selectivity criterion and degree of crashing showed that the centrifugal impact crusher (CC) and roller press (RP) has the lower indexes than the cone inertial crusher (CIC). Degrees of crashing for different crashing machines are:centrifugal impact crusher – 10.1;roller press – 10.8;cone inertial crusher – 14.2. The crusher CC the selection criterion is 0,632 units, RP – 0.730, where as for the crusher CIC – 0.848 units. The best crushing mode for the crusher CIC-300? is as follows: turning angle of debalance is 0°, peripheral speed of a cone rotation – 1420 r.p.m, specific energy consumption- 4.99 kW*t/t. Crusher CIC-300? is the best for tantalium ores of the Otboynoe deposit. The new methodic are verification.INTRODUCTION Rare metal concentration circuits are complex, energy-intensive, and costly. The reasons for this include the multimetal nature of the rare metal ores, their volatile material composition and low grade. That is why careful selection of ore preparation circuits is of great importance for minimizing the energy inputs and maximizing the liberation of the valuable minerals. Recent research (Khopunov, 2011, Gazaleeva, 2015) has demonstrated that the most efficient comminution processes available to the mineral processing industry are selective disintegration, crushing and grinding, allowing to liberate the mineral particles along the cleavage in the comminution process. These methods are indispensable for the processing of finely disseminated refractory ores prone to slime formation. Many rare metal ores found in Russia are of this type."

This study evaluated spinal loads associated with lifting and hanging heavy mining cable in a variety of postures. This electrical cable can weigh up to 10 kg per metre and is often lifted in restricted spaces in underground coal mines. Seven male subjects performed eight cable lifting and hanging tasks, while trunk kinematic data and trunk muscle electromyograms (EMGs) were obtained. The eight tasks were combinations of four postures (standing, stooping kneeling on one knee, or kneeling on both knees) and two levels of cable load (0 N or 100 N load added to the existing cable weight). An EMG-assisted model was used to calculate forces and moments acting on the lumbar spine. A two-way split-plot ANOVA showed that increased load (p<0.05) and changes in lifting posture (p<0.05) independently affected trunk muscle recruitment and spinal loading. The increase in cable load resulted in higher EMG activity of all trunk muscles and increased axial and lateral bending moments on the spine (p < 0.05). Changes in posture caused more selective adjustments in muscle recruitment and affected the sagittal plane moment (p < 0.05). Despite the more selective nature of trunk EMG changes due to posture, the magnitude of changes in spinal loading was often quite dramatic. However, average compression values exceeded 3400 N for all cable lifting tasks.

Under an extremely aggressive schedule, final design of 13.5 km (8.4 miles) miles of 8.2 m (27 ft) diameter deep rock tunnel, 322 ML/day (85 million gallons / day)submersible pumping station and associated facilities were accomplished ahead of a federal court mandated consent decree schedule. Challenges overcome by the project team in enabling timely completion of the construction documents will be presented. Discussion includes evolution of final design, consideration of future O&M requirements, and risks identified for construction and operations, together with measures to manage and proactively prepare for such risks.

In 1981, North American Degerstrom Contracting began gold mining on the Little Rocky Mountain Range, near Zortman, MT. In the past four years, the price of gold has fluctuated from a high of $16/g ($500 per oz) to a low of $9.60/g ($300 per oz). With that kind of a moving target, profitability presents a management challenge. Based in Spokane, WA, Degerstrom employs 85 people at the mine. It is one of the largest heap leach operations in the nation. Last year, 8 Mt (9 million st) of low-grade ore was moved to the leach pads in a two-shift, five-day operation. The current pit being worked produces 218 kt/m (240,000 stpm) of leaching ore. Ore fragmentation critical The gold bearing ore has no defined patterns or seams. It is an igneous intrusion resulting from volcanic activity. It occurs spontaneously throughout the range. To recover the gold, areas are staked out and core samples are taken and analyzed. These data determine if the ore is rich enough to mine. Once mining begins, an average of 150 holes are drilled and blasted on a two-day rotation. Five Ingersoll-Rand T4s drill on a 4- x 4.5-m (14- x 15-ft) spacing to a 7.6-m (25-ft) depth. "When we first came to this site, we drilled on a 3.6- x 3.6-m (12- x 12-ft) pattern," said Paul Baker, superintendent for N.A. Degerstrom Contracting. "We did some experimenting using a high density emulsion in the bottom of the hole and filling the rest with regular Anfo." The high density emulsion saved the company on overall drilling and blasting costs since the holes could be spaced on a wider pattern and still achieve the high degree of fragmentation needed for leaching. Blasting is important because the gold lays in the natural strata of the rock. Also, the ore is not crushed before it goes to the leach pads. So complete fragmentation is critical. Terrain dictates loading/hauling system The shot ore is worked in 6 m (20 ft) benches by two Caterpillar 245 front shovels equipped with 3 m3 (4 cu yd) buckets, a 992C wheel loader with a 12.6-m3 (16.5-cu yd) bucket, and a 988E high lift fed by a D9H. A Caterpillar D10 tractor trap dozes to the loader. According to Baker, the 6 m (20 ft) bench is an efficient lift for the front shovel and the wheel loader. In tight quarters or in a pocket of ore, Degerstrom uses the 245s. For high production areas, the wheel loader is used. The hauling fleet includes 28 Cat 773 off highway trucks. The 45 t (50 st) trucks are seven pass loaded by the 245s with a 25-second cycle time per bucket load. The 992C loads the trucks in two passes in less than 30 seconds. The cycle time is four to five minutes for a 1.2-km (4000-ft) haul on grades that average 10%. Grades, in some places, exceed 16%. "We use the 773s because they have a low weight-to-horsepower ratio - that&apos;s what you need in steep country," Baker said. The trucks haul the shot ore to the leach pad. Currently, Degerstrom is working a pad that has a capacity for 5 Mt (5.5 million st) of ore. Building the leach pads The base of the pads resemble a large drainage basin. They take about one month to construct. A 0.3-m (1-ft) layer of impervious bentonite clay is hauled in and leveled by a Cat D9H tractor. A 30-mm (1.2-in.) PVC liner is then laid in place on top of the clay base. It, in turn, is covered with tailings from an old on-site mill. Degerstrom uses the tailings to protect the liner from tears when the ore is dumped. The ore is leveled and built up in 9 m (30 ft) lifts by the D9H. The tractor rips the top layer. Then, a network of plastic irrigation pipe is put in place to distribute a cyanide solution over the surface. The leaching solution percolates through the ore and dissolves the gold. The solution drains from the pads and is pumped to a 22.7-ML (6-million gal) pregnant solution holding pond. The liquid then goes through two separate filtration units. One unit removes entrained solids and the other side adds a zinc dust to precipitate the gold. This is collected on filters. The affluent then returns to a solution holding pond for redistribution through the pipeline network. Typically, 80% of the pad&apos;s potential recovery takes place in the first 30 days of leaching. The process stops when the ambient temperature falls below the cyanide&apos;s freezing level. And each pad has a leach cycle of four to five years before recovery values decline to a point where further leaching becomes uneconomical. At Zortman, it takes 9 t (10 st) of ore to produce 31 g (1 oz) of gold. It is therefore critical to keep total production costs down and efficiency high.

The Canadian mining industry is one of the strongest in the world. Not only does the country produce a sizable amount of minerals and metals, Canada plays host to hundreds of global mining companies, large and small. The country, for the most part, recognizes the importance of natural resource development, particularly mining, to its economic well being. Like any country, though, there are federal and provincial regulations on the books that the industry takes issue with. But there are also certain economic incentive programs in place to encourage exploration and mine investment. And, unlike the industry and the United States government, the Canadian government and mining industry appear to have a reasonable working relationship.

Copper-chromium mixed oxides are widely used as catalyst for organic chemicals industry, NOx and CO oxidation, solid propellant etc. In the present investigation, one such spent Cu-Cr catalyst has been tested for recovering copper and chromium values through hydrometallurgical route. The spent catalyst used in this study contains about 42% Cu and 36% Cr. Phase analysis through XRD indicates that major phases are copper chromium oxide (CuCrO2) and copper chromate (CuCr2O4) while minor phase is copper oxide (Cu64O). SEM images show that high energy ball milling changes surface morphology significantly ? more regular shaped grains in unmilled samples changed to fine agglomerates. Surface area also changes significantly due to milling. Preliminary leaching experiments with NH3 and H2SO4 media using unmilled samples indicate that both the media are suitable for selective extraction of copper. About 55% copper recovery is achieved in 2 h using 1.2 M NH3 + 0.2M (NH4)2SO4 solution at 100°C. Increasing NH3 concentration or temperature does not improve the recovery significantly. Under the above conditions chromium, dissolution is insignificant (max. 2.24%). XRD analysis of the residue indicates that copper chromate fraction (CuCr2O4), which is a spinel structure, remains mostly intact. In sulphuric acid media at ambient temperature, 47% copper recovery is achieved with 7.5% (v/v) H2SO4 and maximum of 57% with the increase in acid concentration to 20%. However, 67% recovery is achieved by increasing the leaching temperature to 150°C. High energy ball milled samples show improved leaching efficiency. Under the leaching conditions of 7% H2SO4 (v/v), 2% pulp density, 80°C an unmilled sample yields 47% Cu recovery whereas 3h and 5h milled samples yield 65% and 90% Cu recovery respectively in 2h leaching time. Influence of temperature is also more pronounced in milled sample leaching in comparison to unmilled sample. Water leaching of alkali (NaOH) roasted milled sample carried out at 750°C for 2 h with 100% NaOH (w/w) resulted in 80% Cr recovery as compared to 37% Cr recovery using unmilled sample under the same conditions. Oxides of sulphur are corrosive and are produced when sulphur-containing fuels are burned. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a colourless gas with a characteristic, irritating, pungent odour. Exposure routes to the human body are mainly through inhalation and skin and/or eye contact. Symptoms of exposure to SO2 may include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; rhinorrhea (discharge of thin nasal mucous); choking; cough; and reflex bronchoconstriction. To protect employees against the ill health effects of SO2 exposure, they are often required to make use of respiratory protection whenever entering areas were the SO2 levels exceed the statutory limits. The use of respiratory protective equipment should always be a last resort and should be considered only after other control measures have failed to reduce occupational exposure levels to below the occupational exposure limit or whilst other control measures are being investigated or implemented. Whenever the use of respiratory protection equipment is considered, it should always be used as part of a comprehensive respiratory protection plan. It is also extremely important that all potentially exposed persons are adequately and comprehensively informed and trained.

El Complejo Pasco —ubicado en la Cordillera Oriental de los Andes de la sierra central del Perú, en el distrito de San Francisco de Asís, provincia y departamento de Pasco— está constituido por las unidades subterráneas de Atacocha y Porvenir, la operación a tajo abierto Glory Hole y tres proyectos brownfield ubicados en la periferia de la concesión. Tanto Atacocha como Porvenir son depósitos tipo skarn, con mineralización distal de Zn y Pb(+/-Au) y proximal de Zn+/-Cu, asociados a cuerpos hipoabisales de composición cuarzoandesítica y andesítica. Estudios y exploraciones recientes muestran otros tipos de sistemas mineralizados, como brechas tectónicas con reactivación hidrotermal tardía, un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia en vetas, cuerpos irregulares, entre otros, y un sistema tipo pórfido. La Falla Milpo-Atacocha, de rumbo N-S, juega un rol importante, ya que los intrusivos (Stock Milpo y Santa Bárbara) que generan la mineralización del tipo skarn están controlados por esta falla. Existe otro tipo de mineralización, asociado al sistema NW-SE (Falla 13): un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia. Este trabajo pretende mostrar los últimos avances en las interpretaciones metalogenéticas, producto de un intenso programa de exploración (aproximadamente 80,000 m. DDH / 2018) y de un programa de recategorización de recursos (a través de 60,000 m. DDH), que permitirá hacer posible una operación sostenible de 12 años.

A general description of the geology of the Southern Coalfield is given. The relationship between the Illawarra Coal Measures, the overlying Triassic and the underlying Upper Marine Series, of Permian age as are the Coal Measures, is briefly explained and thestratigraphy of each is described. The eight coal seams are then treated in slightly more detail as to their thickness, quality, areas of distribution and best occurrences.In the last few years each of the authors has been concerned with one phase or other of the stTucture of the field in detail or in mining operations with the result that it is now possible to name a number of monoclines, anticlines, domes and synclines defined in detail. A minor quantitative study has been made of faults and dykes with regard to form, direction intensity and inter-relationship. It seems probable that with the further collection of data a more detailed study in these matters will be of considerable value to the economy of mining in the Southern Coalfield.

This presentation will describe the underground excavation at the Bad Creek Pump Storage project. It consists of approximately 3,650 m of various size tunnels ranging from 4.2 m to 9.0 m finished diameter, a powerhouse cavern 45 m high by 135 m long by 22.5 m wide, and 422 m of 9 m diameter shaft. A total of 350,000 m of rock will be excavated, hauled, and placed in a submerged wier. Temporary rock support consisting of shotcrete and/or rockbolts is installed as required.

"Biological leaching can be used to enhance the recovery of gold and silver from refractory ores, concentrates and tailings. The method liberates precious metals associated with sulphide minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite making them amenable to cyanidation. The chemistry and features of biological preoxidation leaching is discussed. A summary of the results obtained on various ores, concentrates and tailings is presented.INTRODUCTIONRefractory precious metal ores in which gold and silver are finely disseminated in sulphide minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite are becoming more important to the mining industry. This is due both to a depletion of simpler, free-milling ores and to a significant increase in the price of gold in recent years. Whereas many ores can be directly cyanided with gold solubilizations over 90% obtained, the refractory ores respond poorly to direct cyanidation and require decomposition of the precious metal-bearing sulphide minerals to increase recoveries.Decomposition of sulphides by oxidation prior to cyanidation can be carried out by several means. The oldest method is roasting which removes unwanted ore constituents by high temperature oxidation and volatilization. In Canada, for example, roasting is used at Giant Yellowknife (Connell and Cross, 1981). Another method gaining increasing acceptance is pressure hydrometallurgy which uses aqueous oxidation conducted at high temperature and pressure. Homestake Mining Company have recently completed construction of a plant incorporating pressure oxidation at their Mclaughlin property in California (Guinivire, 1984)."

"Adoption of the International Cyanide Management Code, regulatory requirements and community concerns have increased the need to implement suitable cyanide destruction processes at gold operations to meet ever more stringent discharge limits. As standards set for the allowable concentrations of cyanide, cyanide compounds and other contaminants may vary from country to country, jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and even from site to site, there is no “one size fits all” technological solution. Currently the most common cyanide destruction processes used in industry are sulfur dioxide/oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and Caro’s acid. Regardless of the process used, cyanide destruction plants must be reliable and achieve permit guidelines at all times. The selection of the most appropriate cyanide destruction process for an operation depends on several factors, including permit discharge requirements, tailings chemistry, location, site-specific climatic conditions and size of the operation. Only after considering all these factors together can the most effective approach be selected to achieve the permit guidelines economically and technically feasible. Finally performing the correct test work program is the most important step to ensure that the correct process design criteria can be determined to accurately calculate capital and operating costs.IntroductionThe adoption of the International Cyanide Management Code in 2005, stricter regulatory requirements and community concerns prompted by environmental incidents involving cyanide have increased the need to implement cyanide destruction processes at gold and silver operations.Process solutions associated with the extraction of gold and silver contain several forms of cyanide. The most toxic form of cyanide is free cyanide, which can be present as a dissociated cyanide anion (CN-) or gaseous or aqueous HCN. Weak or moderately stable cyanide complexes such as those of zinc, copper and nickel are classified as weak acid dissociable (CNWAD). Although less toxic than free cyanide, weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes are considered “ecologically sensitive” forms of cyanide and are regulated in most jurisdictions. In practice, reported WAD cyanide values are comprised of both free cyanide and weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes. Cyanide complexes with gold, mercury, cobalt and iron are referred to as strong acid dissociable complexes (CNSAD) and are much more stable even under mildly acidic conditions. Another term commonly used in cyanide chemistry is total cyanide, which represents all cyanide compounds present in solution, with the exception of cobalt complexes. Total cyanide levels in solutions are in most cases higher than WAD cyanide values and the difference between the two usually indicates the presence of iron-cyanide compounds. Typically, in Canada CNTOTAL levels cannot exceed 1 mg/L in solutions."

ALTHOUGH it has been a matter of about one hundred years since the idea of the internal-combustion engine entered the mind of the inventor, the practical application of its use was not attained till 1860, when Lenoir produced an engine similar to the ordinary highpressure steam engine, with the valves arranged to admit the explosive mixture and the discharge of the exhaust gases. In this case no attempt was made to compress the gas before ignition, as it was then considered that the explosion under these conditions had a detrimental effect, inasmuch as it would act as a sudden blow to the working parts. Indeed, he went so far as to inject steam and water sprays to reduce the explosion.Under these conditions the consumption of gas was exceedingly high-about 106 cub. ft. of coal gas per b.h.p. per hour but the mechanical effect showed that the engine ran in every respect as smoothly and quietly as in best steam-engine practice.The extravagant consumption of this engine was clearly pointed out at the time by Gustav Schmidt in a paper before the German Society of Engineers, wherein he states :-&quot; The results would be far more favourable if compression pumps, worked from the engine, compressed the cold air and cold gas to three atmospheres before entrance into the cylinder. By this means a greater expansion and transformation of heat is possible.&quot;

Laser surface alloying was used to develop copper and molybdenum aluminides by injecting premixed copper and molybdenum powder particles into a laser-generated melt pool on an aluminium substrate. Different laser processing parameters were used to produce the composite thin layers on the substrate material. The microstructure and phase constituents of the composite layer were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Experimental results show that the matrix structure of the metal matrix composite layer consists of ?-CuAl2and MoAl5. Surface hardness was increased by a factor of 3.

TVI Resource Development (Phils) Inc. Canatuan mine is a polymetallic ore deposit located in the Province of Zamboanga del Norte on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The deposit consisted of an oxidized capping of gossan overlying a Besshi type volcanogenic massive sulphide lens which is near surface and flat lying. Construction and development of a sulphide processing plant began in early 2007 and commissioned in November 2008. During the initial stages of sulphide operation, high copper (Cu)-low zinc (Zn) ore was fed to the plant. Marketable copper concentrate at 91-95% recovery was produced utilizing a high-pH bulk sulphide rougher flotation and 2 cleaning stages. Because of increased levels of Zn of the ore body, a Cu/Zn separation circuit was initiated in early 2010 following an intensive laboratory test work program. This Cu/Zn separation circuit was necessitated because of the copper ion pre-activation of the sphalerite that lead to the zinc being readily recovered to the copper rougher concentrate. In-situ activation of zinc (in the pit and stockpiles) was caused by the leaching of secondary copper minerals in the ore (particularly from the dominant copper species, chalcocite and covellite). This problem required the development of metallurgically complex and intensive reagent regime to effectively depress the activated sphalerite. As well, the immediate reactivation of zinc after it has been depressed, at the onset of Cu/Zn separation flotation, added additional metallurgical complexity to the process. Subsequent to the Cu/Zn separation circuit, an unconventional, yet proven effective, simultaneous cyanide detoxification-zinc flotation circuit was set-up to recover the zinc. Laboratory test work results realized Cu-Zn recovery differential from a Cu/Zn separation circuit of over 40-45%. This performance has been achieved in the plant, at 72% Cu overall recovery. With the gradual improvements on-going with zinc circuit capacity and effective zinc separation being achieved, zinc recovery has currently reached 40%.

Major problems associated predicting soil-structure interaction behavior are based on the fact that soil is neither homogeneous nor elastic and soil properties are spatially variable. There also exist significant coupling problems between the behavior of the structure and geologic media. When designing foundation or other geotechnical structures, the load transfer between the soil and structure takes place at the contact surface. This surface is called the interface. The behaviors of interface play an important role in the load-deformation response of soil-structure interaction systems. The purpose of this study is to develop improved model for simulation of saturated sand-steel pile interface behavior based on a general concept, called the disturbed state concept (DSC), which can characterize the behavior of saturated soils under dynamic loads. In this study, the Disturbed State Concept (DSC) constitutive model is calibrated and modified for steel pile-saturated sand interface and interaction by using the continuous hardening model for relative intact (Rl) state and the critical state model for the fully adjusted (FA) part in the saturated sand material. The general formulation for implementation has been developed. Then, the DSC model with modification for interface and saturated sand is implemented in finite element program based on the generalized Biot&apos;s theory. The interface tests under one-way monotonic and two-way cyclic loading and cyclic triaxial tests are executed for defining the parameters for interface and surrounding soils. Based on these parameters, steel pile-saturated sand interface and interaction are numerically simulated using the finite element program modified in this study. The DSC predictions show improved agreement with the observed results from laboratory test.

The Velvet gold orebody (153 Koz Au) is located near the Kanowna Belle gold deposit in the Boorara Domain of the Kalgoorlie Terrane, a subdivision of the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Superterrane (Swager et al, 1990). Gold mineralisation at Velvet is hosted within an intrusion of intermediate composition that broadly follows a sub vertical hanging wall splay of the Fitzroy Shear Zone.Velvet was discovered in 2003 during an underground exploration drilling program targeting potential strike extensions to the Kanowna Belle deposit. Diamond drill hole KDU1595 returned a downhole intercept of 36 m grading 4.6 ppm Au approximately 500 m west of the deposit and at a vertical depth of 700 m below surface in the immediate hanging wall of the primary Kanowna Belle host structure, the Fitzroy Shear Zone. Subsequent drilling completed following the initial discovery, from both surface and underground collar positions, failed to replicate this result.In 2014, KDU1595 was resurveyed gyroscopically and the mineralised intercept correctly located. Additional drilling was undertaken to follow-up the repositioned discovery hole. Challenges included poor drilling angles through the Fitzroy Shear Zone, excessive deviation during drilling and the unknown geometry of the target. Navigational drilling helped to successfully penetrate the Fitzroy Shear Zone and in April 2015, drill hole KDU3234 returned a significant downhole intercept of 45 m grading 5.6 ppm Au.Additional drilling success resulted in a decision to develop a 600 m drive to serve as a dual-purpose access for further exploration and mining. This was a potential risk considering that the orebody geometry was unknown and all significant drilling results were clustered within a 50 m &#215; 50 m panel. Development commenced in June 2015 and the first ore cut taken in April 2016. Geological mapping and structural interpretation, together with multi-element and spectral analysis of drill samples has enabled several other target areas to be identified for exploration. The Velvet mining area is critical to continued production at Kanowna Belle. This paper presents the compressibility of tropical peat reinforced with cylindrical cement column. When a cement column installed vertically in peat, its compressibility was reduced because of the hardened skeleton matrix formed by cement particles bonding with adjacent soil particles in the presence of pore water. The effects of diameter, number of columns and cement proportions in cement columns on the compressibility have been investigated in this study. The results indicated that compressibility index Cc and Ca decreased with the increase in diameter of the cement column. Specimens with 45 mm and 60 mm diameter of cement column were cured for 28 days, after which they were subjected to Rowe Cell Consolidation test. Based on the results obtained, it shows that cement columns can successfully reduce the compressibility of tropical peat.
