Ever since opening, the M25 motorway to the west of London has carried a rapidly increasing volume of traffic. The section of M25 between the junctions with the M3 and M4 motorways, which is in the near vicinity of Heathrow airport, is the most heavily trafficked section. Piling and ground treatment was required for motorway widening works over this route, which is 7 miles long. The foundation works were undertaken next to the live motorway and beneath the flightpath for aircraft landing and taking off at the airport. The paper describes the foundation construction techniques used, and the how the methods were affected by the live motorway and the height restrictions imposed by the airport. A unique method of piled retaining wall construction is also described.

Amid some of the worst economic conditions that the mining industry has been faced with in more than a decade, the mood among the large crowd at the 114th Annual Northwest Mining Association?s annual meeting was surprisingly upbeat. More than 2,200 attendees showed up at John Asuaga?s Golden Nugget Casino in Reno, NV for the conference held Dec. 1-5. And more than 200 companies exhibited in 240 spaces, including SME and the Minerals Information Institute. The number of attendees and exhibitors were the most for the conference in more than 10 years. The conference was held in Reno/Sparks for just the second time in its illustrious history but began under the cloud of global financial turmoil. Prior to, and during the conference, the industry news headlines were grim, to say the least. An alarming number of mine plans and expansions had been put on hold; hundreds of miners across the United States had been or were in the process of being laid off; commodity prices were falling and some of the biggest mergers in the industry fell through while miners around the world put the brakes on to take a wait-and-see approach. It was a painful time for many, but the downsizing actions taken by many mining companies was exactly what needed to happen, according to Industry Outlook Luncheon featured speaker Frederick Sturm. He is the executive vice president and chief investment strategist and member of Mackenzie?s Investment team. He has earned a reputation as one of Canada?s leading investors in natural-based companies and he also manages the Ivy Global Natural Resource Fund in the United States Sturm said that the mining industry has fallen hard and that he expects it to bounce back quickly, before falling hard again. In these tough times, he said, the companies that have pulled back on production early are doing the right thing in the long run.

Blasting conducted in the USA using the new Electronic Initiation System developed by Altech has shown that an accurate delay system will benefit the customer. Results from test work clearly showed that improved fragmentation was effected and blast vibration was at least similar to that currently found at the test venue with improvements possible.

Amodified load transfer method computing the displacement, axial compression, skin resistance, toe resistance, and other static bearing behaviours of piles, is propoesd in this paper. Through deriving a new concrete computational method with simple integration, many complex factors, such as different soil properties of each layer in layered soil, variation of soil parameters with the changes of the depth, different elastic moduli of piles under different loads, and even different areas in the same pile, can all be easily considered. This method fits in with many types of piles, including friction and point bearing piles, precast and cast-in-situ piles. Observation of static loading test on pile is given, and the computed values from the modified load transfer method are found to agree with practical measured results.

THE object of this note is to report briefly certain results of investigations on the Fe-In phase diagram. BISRA-high purity H-iron and 99.9 pct pure indium were used to prepare the alloys. The experimental techniques consisted of thermal analysis, optical metallography, and X-ray diffraction. A phase diagram based on the present results as well as those reported earlier by the author' is shown in Fig. 1. It is seen that the liquidus points fall on a smooth line which meets the monotectic isotherm at 1470°C. The liquidus extends up to 3.4 at. pct In. The phase boundary separating the two liquidus L1 and L2 is shown dotted. The experimental solidus meets the monotectic isotherm at -0.9 at. pct In. The 6/6 + L2 boundary drops steeply to the 6 + La/y + L2 boundary at -1350°C. In this region, it is impossible to detect satisfactory thermal arrests because of the steep phase boundary. The present diagram shows that indium lowers the temperature of the d/y transforma-tion and raises the temperature of the y/a transfor-mation. The y +d region is found to be very narrow. Indium gives rise to a restricted y field when alloyed with iron. The width of this field is between 0.4 and 0.5 at. pct In. Details of the alloys containing 40 and 50 at. pct In have already been reported by the author' and the transformation temperatures of these alloys are included in Fig. 1. It appeared from optical metallography and X-ray diffraction that the room temperature solubility of indium in a iron is less than 0.28 at. pct since alloys of 0.28 at. pct In and above, slow cooled to room temperature, contained dark etching second phase particles situated both in the matrix and grain boundaries of the a-grains, see Figs. 2 and 3. These particles were identified to be unalloyed indium by X-ray diffraction. The lattice parameter of the a phase reached a maximum of 2.8672A at the indium level of -0.28 at. pct. The present diagram, Fig. 1, is in substantial agreement with that of Stadelmaier and Fiedler' except for certain differences in detail. For example, they found the monotectic composition and temperature to be 7.0 at. pct In and 1443oC, respectively, while the present work indicates them to be 3.4 at. pct In and 1470°C. The 6 + L2/y + L2 transformation is indicated in the present work to occur at -1350°C, whereas Stadelmaier and Fiedler find this to occur at -1320°C. They also claim that the width of the y field is 0.2 at. pct In while the present work shows the width to be between 0.4 and 0.5 at. pct In. 1) Indium, when alloyed with iron, gives rise to a restricted y field, the width being >0.5 at. pct In.

"Significant strides have been made during the past decade to integrate the traditionally separate administrative functions of financial management, materials management and maintenance management.In 1983, Key Lake Mining Corporation (KLMC) brought on-stream one of the most technologically advanced mining operations in North America. There was a requirement to support this new facility with state-of-the-art management information systems.This paper will discuss the development and evolution of the corporation's computerized information systems with specific emphasis on the utilization of computer systems to assist maintenance personnel in performing their work activities:Note: In August of 1989, the administration and operation of the Key Lake Mine was assumed by CAMECO - A Canadian Mining and Energy Corporation.IntroductionThe Key Lake Mining Corporation was incorporated in 1979 and operates a $500 million uranium mining and milling complex located in northern Saskatchewan.The feasibility study and environmental impact statements for the Key Lake Mine were submitted in 1979and in August of 1981, following a public inquiry, approval to proceed with construction was granted. Ore processing commenced in October of 1983 and during 1984 a total of 10.4 million pounds of uranium oxide (U3O8) was produced. In 1987, an annual production of 13.5 million pounds was achieved clearly establishing Key Lake Mining Corporation as the world's leading producer of uranium oxide. Current ore resources are expected to extend production of the Key Lake facility into the year 2000."

The kinetics of reduction of copper (cuprous) sulphide with CO-CO2-He gas mixtures, using an excess of CaO(s) as a sulphur-scavenging substance were investigated in the temperature range 855° - 950°C by a thermogravimetric method. Several gas compositions were employed at each temperature. Potential carbon deposition was overcome by preheating the reducing gas mixture. The phase-composition and the morphology of partially reactedsamples were analysed by a SEMlEDAX unit. The reduction rates showed strong dependence on the bulk gas compositions (CO, CO2) and, in most cases, the rate declined with rising temperature. The rate-controlling step appears to be the diffusion of CO2 gaseous species through the micropores of the CaS(s) - product layer which builds up around the CaOcore.

This paper describes a method of conducting rapid lateral loading tests of deep foundations in which the load is applied to the foundation with a time duration of less than one second. For purposes of this paper the loading is applied using a pyrotechnic loading system commonly referred to as Statnamic. However, the method should apply to any lateral loading system which produces a force time history with a loading duration of 20 msec to 1 second. The test provides a measure of the dynamic and static response of the soil/foundation system and must be evaluated as a dynamic loading. Interpretation of the test includes a simple single degree of freedom (SDOF) model which can account for the inertial effects of foundation mass, system damping, and static foundation stiffness. The results of the test measurements are compared with four case histories in which comparative static load test data are available, including pile group foundations and large diameter drilled shaft foundations.

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde, majority owned by Phelps Dodge produces 200M lbs per year of LME Grade A copper from low cost leaching of secondary sulfides and SXEW processing. Central to the success of Cerro Verde has been the continuous improvement of leaching practices which currently yield over 80% recovery of the contained copper in the ore. This recovery has been achieved by careful attention to operational practices and leaching process fundamentals. This paper details the development of the concept of “Lixiviant Request Rate” where by solution is applied at an optimal rate for the grade, mineralogy, and the point in the leach cycle. Also paramount to the success of Request Rate technology has been the development of irrigation practices such as drip irrigation and irrigation grid design. These developments have ultimately resulted in improved copper production, decreased sulfuric acid and water consumption, decreased pumping cost, and more consistent PLS grades.

"Florida, the State that supplied 82 per cent of the phosphate rock sold in the United. States in 19284, has two producing areas - the hard-rock and the land pebble districts. Production of the hard-rock field, decreasing importance in recent years, is now confined to mines near Dunnellon, in Marion and. Citrus Counties. The land-pebble district, with a production of almost 80 per coat of the nation's requirements, is located, in Polk and Hillsborough Counties. In the land-pebble area the phosphate deposits - probably Pliocene in age, derived by marine action from underlying, older, phosphate-bearing formations - consist of beds of phosphate matrix, covered by practically barren sands and clays. The overburden, ranging in thickness up to 45 feet, is removed by hydraulic methods or by drag-line excavators. The matrix, ordinarily less than 25 feet in thickness, is mined by hydraulicking and is pumped to adjacent washing plants for beneficiation. The dried product of the washing plants is the Florida pebble rock that is sold in foreign as well as domestic markets.The beneficiation of phosphate ores in the land-pebble district of Florida has been largely limited in the past to the recovery of the coarser pebbles. By washing and screening the crude matrix a separation is effected at about 20 mesh (0.033 inch). The coarser material is the phosphate-rock product of the plant and the finer material is discarded. The amenability of the washer- rejects to treatment by other processes is being investigated. Of methods that may have some application to the treatment of the low-grade phosphatic sands that comprise the greater portion of the washer-rejects, gravity concentration has received some study.Laboratory experiments to determine the amenability of phosphate sands to gravity methods of concentration were first performed in October, 1927. Later, in the winter of 1928-1929, a further series of teats was made,. In these later tests phosphatic sands were concentrated by hydraulic classification, and. also by hydraulic classification followed by tabling. In these experiments concentrates with an analysis above the minimum grade of commercial phosphate rock (66 per cent bone phosphate of lime - B.P.L.) obtained. The recovery of the phosphate varied but was promising enough to warrant further study. A more comprehensive investigation was therefore outlined. This paper presents the results obtained from an investigation, of classification and tabling of phosphatic sands recently completed by the United States Bureau of Mines Su cooperation with certain Florida phosphate companies, the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, and the University of Alabama."

"From the perspective of metallurgical processing, gold ores can be classified into free-milling and refractory ores. Their extractive metallurgy are largely driven by mineralogical factors such as: gold particle size, association with other minerals, coatings and rimmings, presence of cyanicides, oxygen consumers and preg-robbers, presence of refractory gold minerals and locking of submicroscopic gold in sulfide mineral structure etc. Gold process mineralogy helps address issues and problems related to gold ore processing. It provides useful information on process selection, flowsheet development, recovery improvement and reagent consumption optimization. By combining classic mineralogical techniques, modern instrumental analysis and diagnostic metallurgy, the mineralogist is able to balance the various types of gold occurrence in an ore. This paper will provide a broad review of gold process mineralogy and the techniques available, and use case studies to describe how they can be used together, to provide the complete picture of gold process mineralogy in an ore. Examples will be used where applicable.INTRODUCTIONSince the early 1980’s, a great deal of work has been done in the characterization of gold ores, particularly refractory ores (Gasparrini, 1983; Wang, 1984; Hausen, 1985; Haines, 1986; Henley, 1989; Chryssoulis et al., 1990; Wang et al., 1992, 1994; Kojonen, 1999; Simon et al., 1999; Hong et al., 2000; Pals et al, 2003). Process mineralogy has come into its own as a respected inter-discipline in the fields of mineralogy and metallurgy – a subject that occupies an important place in both research and industry. As the free-milling gold ores are being depleted and more refractory ores are being discovered and processed, gold process mineralogy receives more and more attention from both the mineralogist and metallurgist as it helps to solve various problems encountered during gold ore processing. Steadily rising gold prices are also stimulating the need for gold process mineralogy due to the increasing demand for and production of the yellow metal. At SGS Lakefield Research, gold process mineralogy studies are conducted routinely on all types of gold ores and mill products to assist in a wide variety of metallurgical projects. The Reclamation Program for the Northern Zone of the Indus Plains in West Pakistan involves the construction of 30,000 irrigation wells to serve 20 million acres with an annual pumpage of nearly 40 million acre-ft. Detailed hydrologic studies indicated that mild steel would be satisfactory for casing; however, within two years after construction, about 10% of the wells began to fail due to encrustation and corrosion of the casing. A search to find a noncor-rosive substitute for the steel casing disclosed that only fiberglass-reinforced plastic pipe satisfied all requirements. The results of initial use of fiberglass have been highly satisfactory and have resulted in a lower over-all well cost. Advances in technology pomise further reduction in prices and improvement in performance. The northern zone of the Indus Basin comprises a vast area of essentially level land in West Pakistan which is irrigated by means of a complex system of canals that distribute more water to more land than any other irrigation system in the world. In spite of the development of this extensive irrigation system, production of food and fiber has not met the requirements of the country. The major reasons that crop production has not reached anticipated levels are the lack of adequate irrigation supplies and effective subsurface drainage. As a result, yields per acre are among the lowest in the world for areas where irrigation is practiced, and many thousands of acres of valuable crop land have been removed from production or seriously affected by salinity and waterlogging. To rectify the problems of irrigation supply and drainage the Government of Pakistan has undertaken a program of Salinity Control and Reclamation which is being administered by the Water and Power Development Authority. The Authority retained Tipton and Kalmbach, Inc., of Denver, Colo., as engineers for the program in the northern zone of the Indus Basin. This program consists of the construction of about 30,000 irrigation wells to provide drainage for waterlogged lands and full irrigation supplies, including leaching requirements, for all cultivated lands. Bulk materials handling systems are extensively used in the mining and minerals industry, where a fairly high incidence of structural failure is experienced, notwithstanding design compliance with appropriate standards. A number of case studies are explored to demonstrate how insufficient controls or protection systems have contributed to structural failures on mobile bulk handling equipment. The importance of design integration across engineering disciplines is highlighted. The revision of ISO 5049-1 (1994) is proposed to provide specific rules and guidelines pertaining to machine protection systems. It is further recommended that the structural design engineer of the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) fulfils a more prominent role during the final acceptance and handover of mobile bulk handling equipment, with specific reference to protection systems.

LKAB operates two underground iron ore mines located in the northern part of Sweden, both using sublevel caving (SLC) as the mining method. Knowledge of the mechanisms of gravity flow is important since it affects both ore recovery and waste dilution. This paper describes results from a large-scale field test carried out at the Kiruna mine with a focus on gravity flow. It is part of Work Package 2 in the I2Mine project financed by the EU. A total of ten rings were blasted. Smart Markers based on radio frequency identification technology were used to monitor the gravity flow. An accurate delineation of the isolated extraction zone requires reliable detection of all recovered Smart Markers and precise knowledge of the 3D position of the markers within the burden. It was therefore necessary to carry out borehole deviation measurements (collar, alignment and trajectory). The blast performance was monitored by high-speed filming, near-field vibration monitoring and velocity of detonation measurements. Three-dimensional stereo images were taken from the drawpoint and the loaded bucket after each mucking cycle. Based upon that, fragmentation was assessed both in 2D and 3D. Furthermore, volumetric differences were determined at the drawpoint, which reflects the mobility of loaded material. For draw control, the Fe content is estimated by measuring weight and assuming a full bucket. The measured volume of rock in each bucket further improves this estimate. Possible flow disturbances occurring at the drawpoint were revealed by video recording. Two-dimensional laser scanning was carried out during mucking to track the position of the bucket and estimate the position and slope of the muck pile.The results from this test clearly show that the gravity flow in the large-scale sublevel cave in Kiruna mine is often of disturbed character. Standard draw occurred only in three rings and shallow draw in the remaining seven rings. In five cases, shallow draw developed towards standard draw, but occurred at rather late stages during extraction (70–125 per cent). The maximum width of the draw varied between 10 m and 13 m except for one ring (6 m). The draw reaches the cave rather early (5–25 per cent extraction) in shallow draw situations and much later (about 50 per cent) during standard draw. Waste originates from above in most cases, while more significant portions often occur at about 20–45 per cent extraction.All the results from this extensive field test are not yet fully analysed, and further field tests are planned. "The number of investigations reported during the past year indicates that control of the health hazard due to abnormal air conditions is still a matter of serious consideration in the mining, metallurgical, and allied industries.Australia. - In an investigation into the health and working conditions of employees in the mining industry of Tasmania and Victoria3, it was found that although pulmonary tuberculosis may occur early in life, silicosis is e disease of slow evolution and does not appear frequently under the ace of 40. A period of at least ten years in the industry was found necessary to produce silicosis, and in no case was the disease found in those who had not worked underground. A very high incidence of silicosis was found in all fields among those who had worked underground 20 years and longer. There was some evidence that silicosis complicated by tuberculosis may occur earlier than uncomplicated silicosis.England. - In a paper presented before the Section on Occupational Diseases of the British Medical Association, Dr. E. L. Middleton, the medical inspector of factories, called attention4 to the occurrence of silicosis in various industries throughout the country.punitive on some quite harmless industries. Thus Middleton says: ""Where the amount of dust is small the action of the phagocytes is likely to be effective, but where it is great . . ."" What dosage is indicated by ""small"" and ""great"" in this connexion? If the meaning of ""small"" were known, would it be correct to go on to say, as he does, ""each successive dose of silica produces a summation of effects""? Then, again, would it be fair to say ""a comparatively brief period of exposure may be the only determining factor""? What, in minutes, hours, or days per week, per month,' or year, is intended by ""a comparatively brief period""? ""Intermittency of the process"" is another expression used in summing up the reasons for and against a standardization of air purity by a gravimetric process or enumeration of the particles; the arguments against such a standardization are, by Middleton, considered strong, but they are by no means convincing to us. A standard has been accepted in respect of the amount of lead in milligrams per 10 cubic metres of air; Dr. Ronald Lane showed in another paper read that adherence to this makes the occurrence of poisoning highly improbable. Mavrogordato has placed on record figures of silica dust at different stages of the improvements in the workings of the Rand mines, and such a control is in constant operation in them today.We emphasize these points because apparently the Government has taken the unusual course of legislating first and postponing inquiry to a later date, as in the ""Various Industries (Silicosis) Scheme, 1939."" The insurance companies also have a considerable interest in the matter of compensation for the silicosis risk. Where exposure - as in the refractories industries, the grinding industries, sandstone industry, and pottery industry - is day in and day out, they rightly demand a premium far higher than for any other disease scheduled under the Workmen's Compensation Act - 5 per cent on the wages bill. row every industrial employer, such as the paint and varnish manufacturer, who has a sack of crushed silica in his store .room, from which he extracts once a week enough to make a paste With spirit and add to his other ingredients in order to give them the necessary ""bite,"" becomes involved, and may have to abandon the use of the material or pay 8 per cent on his wages bill for an absolutely negligible risk.. "Introduction""Pebble milling"" is a term used to describe secondary grinding done with rock pebbles rather than steel balls or other steel or metal shapes. This paper discusses pebble milling with particular attention being paid to uranium grinding circuits.Pebble milling is typically employed:a. where the cost of steel balls becomes exorbitant, as may be the case in an isolated area.b. where the extra steel added from steel ball consumption may be detrimental to further processing.c. where the over-all economics favour the use of pebbles rather than ball.Pebble milling differs from autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding in that a sized product has been removed from some part of the primary comminution circuit, and it is this sized product which is added as grinding media to the pebble milling stage. The pebbles do not necessarily have to be produced from the ore- ""foreign"" pebbles can be used. Also, pebble milling generally refers to grinding from a fine size, below about 6 mesh (3360 micron), with relatively small media, that is, secondary grinding. In South Africa, however, primary pebble mills are sometimes used to grind crusher house product, and thus function in place of rod mills. Pebbles for this service are large and heavy as they must weigh as much as balls used in similar service.The first large applications of pebble milling were in South Africa(n. ""Tube milling"" with pebbles started in 1904. The tube mill was simply a tumbling mill with a length to diameter ratio over two. A ""typical"" early tube mill was 5.5 ft. (1.7 m) in diameter and 16 ft. (4.9 m) in length. Diameters increased steadily. King(n mentions 8-ft. (2.4 m) units in his 1949 book. By 1961, the largest units discussed by Jackson('' were 12ft. (3. 7 m) in diameter."

"Within the mining industry paste backfill technology has evolved over the last two decades. This technology aims at producing safe and cost effective backfill of high strength. When used as cemented backfill underground the usual practice in the mining operations was to consider the backfill as a component under the production engineer responsibility. With its growing use in various site conditions some problems were encountered. Over time the mechanical characteristics of paste backfill could deteriorate. Investigations on these problems brought an increased understanding of paste backfill chemistry. Effectively, paste backfill is produced with tailings slurry having sometimes very complex chemistry and mineralogy. The bonding agents can be sensitive to the chemistry of these slurries. Today, a new understanding of the complex chemical reactions involved in cementing paste backfill is derived from concrete research literature. Cemented paste backfill is a manufactured product and as thus all steps involved in its making must be looked at. Both the processing engineers and mining engineers need to be involved. The proposed paper will go over the various developments and new understanding gained over the years on paste backfill chemistry. The authors had the opportunity to work with various Canadian mines that implemented paste backfill in their operations. Chemical alterations case study will serve to illustrate the importance of a good understanding of cement and paste chemistry. The authors will then conclude on research orientations needed to bring a more efficient use of paste backfill technology. The crucial role of the processing engineers in the paste backfill manufacturing will be discussed.INTRODUCTIONPaste backfill is usually prepared from a mixture of solids and water containing at least 15% particles smaller than 20 microns with the addition of binders for mechanical strength. Historically, tailings had been classified to extract the fines and only the coarse part was placed underground as sand slurry. Paste fill was researched in the last three decades to enable mining operations to use all the tailings, including fines, in backfill. The outcome of the early studies showed that paste fill provides high strength but due to preparation complexities and transportation problems is expensive. A greater understanding of the transportation mechanisms and advances in dewatering technology in recent years has resulted in more practical use of paste backfill."

No iron ore deposits were reported before 1961 from the Hamersley Ranges, Western Australia, although low-grade bedded iron formations, associated with ferruginous jaspers and cherts, were known to occur in the local Nullagine Series of Precambrian age.In January-March 1961 preliminary investigations in the area drained by the Turner River, Duck Creek and Serpentine Creek revealed the presence of over 1000 million tons of dense botryoidal or pisolitic limonite, forming flat-lying orebodies with 50-57 per cent iron.Large bedded hematitic orebodies were also discovered in the same area in August-October 1961. These have a porous, biscuity texture and an iron content of 60-61 per cent. They occur at a welldefined stratigraphic level (Brockman Iron Formation), normally in synclines where they have been upgraded by circulating meteoric waters during an old cycle erosion.In 1962 systematic geological studies and mapping, together with sampling and scout drilling, indicated larger reserves of biscuity hematitic ore and led to the discovery of massive hematite deposits at Mt. Tom Price. These were extensively drilled in 1963, proving the persistence of' high-grade mineralisation to a depth of 200 ft and over.To date the total indicated reserves of the Hamersley deposits, within the area held by Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, are of the order of 4960 million tons and thus rank among the more important of the world. The reserves are composed of 600 million tons of bedded dense hematite ore with 64-66 per cent iron, 2900 million tons of bedded biscuity hematite-limonite with 60-61 per cent iron, 1360 million tons of limonite (goethite) ranging in grade from 50 to 57 per cent, and 100 million tons of canga (conglomerate) iron ore containing 53-63 per cent iron. In all cases harmful impurities are comparatively low.
