Booster fans, large underground fans, can increase the volumetric efficiency of ventilation systems by helping to balance the pressure and quantity distribution throughout a mine, reducing leakage and reducing the total power requirement. However, in ventilation systems that use booster fans there is a potential for system recirculation, the leakage of return air to intake air, and also for localized recirculation near the fan through the bulkhead and airlock doors. Air that is recirculated locally decreases the system efficiency because the quantity of air flow through the fan increases without increasing the airflow throughout the system. To understand the detailed flow characteristics of a ventilation system with a booster fan, two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were developed using the software Ansys-FLUENT. Though two-dimensional models do not represent the full complexity of the flow dynamics, they do provide a good representation of the flow characteristics and they allow for a qualitative analysis of how the flow dynamics are affected by the system characteristics. The CFD models were used to evaluate how the number of booster fans, the booster fan placement, the location and geometry of the fan installation and the construction of the airlock system affect the flow characteristics and the localized efficiency of the ventilation system.

The goal of biodynamic models is to simulate the vibration behaviour of the human body. In combination with experimental studies biodynamical models can be a powerful tool for the analysis of the effects of vibration exposure on health [1] and comfort. This paper gives an overview of the state of the art of biodynamic whole-body vibration models of humans, addressing both numerical models and hardware dummies. Method Two approaches are distinguished, the phenomenological and the anatomical, as illustrated in Figure 1. [ ] Phenomenological models aim to reproduce the vibration behaviour of humans with respect to particular physical quantities, chiefly the driving-point impedance at the interface to the seat, and partly with respect to other transfer functions. Discrete systems of masses, springs, and dampers with several degrees of freedom whose topology and parameters are determined by structure- and parameter identification methods are used in the sense that the functions derived from measurements are reproduced as well as possible. This paper provides an evaluation of this methodology and defines its range of application as well as its limits.

The last 12 months has seen the construction of the first Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM excavated tunnel in New Zealand on the Project Hobson sewer storage tunnel for Watercare Services Limited, with the concurrent excavation of the second EPB tunnel on the Rosedale Outfall project for North Shore City Council. Together these tunnels involve a total length of 6km and follow an 8 year pause in TBM activity in Auckland. TBM performance on these two projects is thus of significant interest as there are four major tunneling projects totaling over NZ$8B being planned for Auckland, in similar ground conditions. Auckland?s bedrock is a weak sandstone/siltstone (East Coast Bays Formation), subject to infilled paleovalleys. The geology in the region has been significantly influenced by volcanic activity; 49 volcanoes are present within 20km of the city centre. The paper describes the design and construction challenges for the projects, including TBM performance, ?sticky spoil? management, and risks associated with basalt lava flows and two paleovalleys. Watercare?s Project Hobson also saw the successful implementation of a Geotechnical Baseline Report?one of the first uses of this type of document in Australasia. Rosedale Outfall is designed for high internal water pressures with varying hydraulic flows, with the risk of exfiltration explicitly addressed.

Late Cenozoic ore deposits æPrecious and base metal-richÆ and æSn-Ag-polymetallicÆ ofNorthern Puna are associated either with Middle Miocene dacitic volcanic-dome complexes or with Upper Miocene dacitic-andesitic volcanic centres.   Ore mineralogies and their related volcanism are discussed. A strong link is observed between the Cenozoic Metallogenetic Province of Northern Puna and the Southern Bolivia Tin and polymetallic provinces.

T has been proposed1 on the basis of slip and flow I- that the ideal deformation texture of cold rolled face-centered cubic metals is (110) [112]. As pointed out recently by Brick,' this theory does not account for the difference between the pole figures for cold rolled copper and 70-30 alpha brass, which develop strikingly different spreads from the ideal orientations. It does suggest that the pole figures might be similar for these two metals if they are rolled sufficiently. This has been found to be the case for cold drawn wire.' Experimental Procedure: Four inch sections of cast cakes of copper and 70-30 alpha brass were obtained through the courtesy of the Bridgeport Brass Co. Pieces from these cakes were cold straight rolled 99.993 pct reduction in thickness with the assistance of the Remington Arms Co., Bridgeport, Conn., and by the use of pack rolling. Pole figures were made using the X ray camera and techniques described by Brick.' These pole figures were not significantly different from those previously published for the same materials rolled 98 pct. Eight thicknesses of this strip were then pack rolled. This material failed completely and extensively in tension as shown in fig. 1, developing wavy transverse fractures and bulges. No further work could be done on these samples. Summary: Within the range of this experiment, no attainable amount of cold rolling would cause the pole figures of cold rolled copper and 70-30 brass to become similar, in spite of the fact that such a similarity is predicted by theory.' "The Williams Gold Mine is located in the Hemlo camp of Northwestern Ontario and is one of Canada’s largest gold producers with annual gold production of 400,000 ounces. The operation is owned and operated as a 50:50 joint venture between Teck Cominco Limited and Barrick Gold Corporation.In July 2002, the decision was made to introduce paste backfill produced from mill tailings as the primary backfilling method in the mine and to decommission the existing cemented rock fill system. This required a fast track design to be completed for both a surface paste backfill plant and an underground paste distribution system followed by an intensive construction phase through the fall and winter of 2002/2003. The paste system was commissioned on schedule in late April 2003 and was in full production within 4 weeks of the initial start up. Overall, the project duration was only 42 weeks from initial project release to commissioning and it was completed $2 million under the budget of $14 million.This paper presents an overview of the lab testwork and process flowsheet design, process control methodology and describes the construction and commissioning phases of the project. Preliminary paste plant performance and operating cost data is also presented.IntroductionThe Williams Gold Mine is located in Northwestern Ontario adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway in the Hemlo Gold Camp as shown in figure 1. The mine currently produces approximately 400,000 ounces of gold annually and is owned and operated as a 50:50 joint venture between Teck Cominco and Barrick.The deposit was discovered as part of the Hemlo gold discovery in 1981 which led to the development of three mining operations within a 2 kilometre radius. The neighboring operations are the Golden Giant Mine, currently owned and operated by Newmont Gold, and the David Bell Mine, currently owned and operated by the same joint venture which is running Williams. David Bell ore is blended and milled in the Williams concentrator."

After forty years of exploration and development, the heavy mineral sand deposits of the Murray Basin are on the eve of substantial exploitation by Iluka Resources Limited, Southern Titanium NL and RZM/Cable/Bemax, whom plan to initiate mining and processing operations in 2005. A trial mining and processing operation was undertaken on the Wemen North strandline deposit in 2001-2003 by Murray Basin Titanium, a joint venture of Sons of Gwalia and RZM/Cable, which brought to light a number of mining and processing problems which have since been the subject of extensive studies and process development work. The mineralogy of these weathered strandline deposits is complex by industry standards due to the variety of the heavy minerals present, coatings on the mineral grains and the extensive weathering and alteration which has taken place during the past 50 million years. This paper provides an overview of the complex mineralogy that, in turn, dictates the processes that can be used to recover the valuable heavy minerals. The Murray Basin encompasses some 300,000 km2 and has been a depositional basin, often land locked, since the start of the Cenezoic Era. The economic heavy minerals include ilmenite, altered ilmenite, leucoxene of highly variable composition, rutile, and zircon. There are also other heavy minerals present such as cassiterite, chromite, and monazite in quantities that pose both problems and opportunities. The clay content and overburden thickness also play a major role in the selection of the deposits to be mined. Project Services Consultants (PSC) has undertaken the preparation of this paper as part of its ongoing participation in the mineral sands industry and in particular the project development activities in the Murray Basin region currently being undertaken by Iluka Resources. PSC has been involved with the mineral sands business for several years with senior staff having in excess of 30 years global industry experience. The Permian-Triassic Bowen Basin and the Jurassic-Cretaceous Surat Basin evolved in a backarc tectonic setting behind an active convergent plate margin in eastern Gondwana. Several extensional (Early Permian; Eocene) and contractional (mid-Permian; Early Triassic; Middle-Late Triassic; early Late Cretaceous) intraplate deformational events are recognised in the basins. These can be correlated with similar events in the New England Orogen that was being deformed in the Late Permian-Late Triassic as a foreland thrust belt. The intraplate deformations were probably the consequence of plate interactions, including the accretion of terranes, at the ancient active plate margin, remnants of which now occur in New Zealand.

Most laboratory sealant studies were carried out in 2.0 inch I.D. Plexiglas tubes of 9.0 inches height containing 4.0 to 4.5 inches reconstructed soil from an 0-8 or 8-16 inch soil horizon at the Lanse site. (When soil was used from the Kato site, the top soil horizon was approximately 0-4 inches. The 4-8 inch horizon was somewhat comparable to the Lanse 8-16 inch horizon.) A 20 mesh Saran or steel screen was placed over the rubber stopper with a bottom drain to a 100 ml measuring cylinder. In some earlier experiments a 1/2 inch bed of 1/4 inch pea-gravel was then added, but in later experiments this was eliminated as it showed no particular utility. Field soil samples collected by a shovel were stored in sealed containers and sieved through a 4 mesh screen just before use. (Moisture content was typically about 25% for A horizon soil and about 20% for B horizon soil.) The sieved soil minus roots was then added in increments of about 1 1/4 inches. Compaction was effected by dropping a weighted ramrod (1-7/8 inches O.D,) five times from a height of two inches. If about twenty tamps were used or if the soil columns were rapped vigorously while water-logged, compaction was high with no detectable percolation. Freezing such samples would then usually cause very slow percolation, e.g. 1-2 ml/day. Using this as a standard procedure, percolation flows were usually stablized after two to three days to rates of about 100 to 200 ml/hour. Percolate was recycled carefully to minimize disturbance of the soil surface. When percolation flows were about 100 to 200 ml/hour, various additives (sealants) were introduced to the moist column in two to three increments to maintain a slight head. Additive concentrations were usually 2-1/2% with some at 5% in earlier experiments. Typical use of 40 ml of 2-1/2% additive corresponds to 4400 lbs/acre. When no more additive was present as supernatent liquid, water washes of about 15 ml were then used several times followed by special additives as needed. More water washes were then used to maintain a head of about 1/2 inch. Percolate was collected in 100 ml cylinders to measure percolation rates in ml/hr. Turbid percolate was evaporated to determine amount of eluted latex. Percolate was sometimes checked for pH by Pan-pH Indicator Paper9,10 reading in 0.5 units. Surface tension measurements were sometimes made by a DuNouy tensiometer10 in experiments using a surfactant for pretreatment.

On June 4, Kennecott Utah Copper (KUC)marked the centennial of the founding of the original company. Bill Champion is president and chief executive officer of KUC. He said, “What has happened during the past 100 years far surpassed even the most optimistic visions of men like Daniel C. Jackling and Robert Gemmell when they promoted the concept of mass production techniques for a low-grade deposit of copper ore. At that time, it was a totally new way of doing things and the mining leaders of that day scoffed at the idea. They said it would never work,” Champion said. The company will celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime occasion with a few special projects, mainly for the benefit of our employees, said Louie Cononelos, director of government and public affairs for KUC. The company has designed and minted a commemorative copper coin that reflects early steam shovel and locomotive operations on one side, and today’s modern electric shovels and huge haulage trucks on the other side. “The history of the company stems from the ores of the Bingham Canyon Mine. That coin has been encased as part of a10-panel brochure that captures the company’s 100 year history,” he said. KUC also developed special centennial banners and comparable framed posters that were displayed throughout its operations and at selected community locations that have enjoyed a long-time partnership and special relationship with the company. Some of the plants also designed their own centennial hardhat decals.

Life as a mining/mineral professional doesn’t leave much time for perusing 20-page technical papers. Yet, being technologically savvy is part and parcel of a successful career in this industry. What’s an intelligent, well-informed person to do?

THE most important part of the routine survey work on a mine is the keeping up-to-date of plans and sections showing progress of stoping and development work, and the direction of the latter for the purpose of making necessary connections. Except in specialcircumstances, e.g., major horizoittal development, the exactitude required in this work is not extreme, and a method of survey in keeping with the demands of the work itself is all tbat is required.For example, no one would consider measuring the walls of a stope to a fraction of an inch; such extreme accuracy would be wasted.The stope walls being irregular, a mean is usually taken, and for ordinary purposes a survey with a limiting error of six inches is quite satisfactory for the purpose of plotting either stoping or development.It is the author's aim in this paper to describe the method in use at the North Broken Hill Oompany's British mine. This method, while being sufficiently accurate for the purpose in view, possesses the very great advantages of speed and simplicity of operation,with a minimum of necessary equipment. This latter is a very important item where several surveys on different levels have to be carried out on the one day.Let it be understood, however, that the use of this method does not dispense with the theodolite, but simply serves as a convenient adjunct to obtain details and to extend the accurate theodolite survey up rises and down winzes, and through ladderways orwinzes into stopes, where the use of a theodolite, if not actually impossible, is often exceedingly inconvenient. This is particularly so on the British mine, where a large proportion of the ore is won from narrow and complex-dipping lodes, and where vertical ore...

DURING the last ten years, in the effort to save manpower and costs, methods of drilling and blasting in Sweden have changed and developed in a revolutionary manner. These developments have been accompanied by extensive alterations in methods of tunneling and in mining technique. Since the end of the 1940's there has been a 100 pct change-over in Sweden to the use of tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Both investigations and practical results have shown clearly that a tungsten carbide chisel bit fastened directly on the drill steel is the most economical for Swedish conditions. This applies to drill steel up to the longest size it is practical to handle. In terms of drilling footage, durability of the drill steel and the tungsten carbide bit is generally the same. In this respect, therefore, a detachable bit offers no advantage over integral steel. Transportation of integral steel to the grinding plant, instead of detachable bits only, involves heavier work, but this is counteracted by placing grinding plants closer together or by grinding at the working place itself. The drilling rate with integral steel is higher, the trouble of changing bits is avoided, and the difficulties which always arise with joints are eliminated. At present steel dimensions are usually 7/8 in. with a shank 41/4 in. long, whereas the international standard shank was formerly 31/4 in. The longer shank renders possible a better guide control of the steel and consequently longer life for the rotation chuck and the water-flushing pipe. After extensive experiments and investigations, agreement has been reached in Sweden on certain series of standards, shown in Table I. Other steel dimensions are, of course, available for special purposes. The standard drill-steel set begins with a 34-mm diam and has a length interval of 2 2/3 ft. On the other hand, for ordinary drifting it has been proved more economical to use greater length intervals on the steel, so only one steel change is required for a 61/2-ft round. "Crystalline scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O) has been pointed out as the most stable compound to immobilize arsenic for disposal due to its good stability performance according to EPA’s TCLP test. However, in anaerobic conditions, arsenic releasing is increased to undesired levels due to scorodite reductive break down, in eh <100 mV at 5.5< pH <7 which causes contamination of groundwater. In this work, the concept of encapsulation by controlled deposition of mineral coatings immune to pH or redox potential variations is presented. Aluminum and calcium phosphates were evaluated as coatings and the release of arsenic from scorodite previously coated with phosphates was substantially decreased when compared to the VALUES (obtained from crude scorodite, both in oxic and anoxic conditions. INTRODUCTIONThe widely acknowledged hazardous properties of arsenic as a soil and natural water contaminant and its adverse health effects when present in drinking water have led to very strict environmental regulations (Mandal & Suzuki, 2002) aiming at the drastic reduction of the presence of arsenic in the effluents of the mining and metallurgical industries.In Canada, the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations (Government of Canada, 2002) dictate that the maximum monthly mean concentration in tailings for arsenic must be lower than 0.5 mg/L. At the same time the new Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) standard for drinking water foresees concentrations of arsenic less than 0.01 mg/L, which means that the leachability limit for the industrial waste is set at 1 mg/L arsenic (EPA, 1994; Le Berre et. al, 2007). One of the preoccupations of the mining and metallurgical industries is directed to the elimination of arsenic presence in all its effluents, especially since arsenic is commonly found in many ores mainly in the form of oxides and sulphides. After processing of arsenic-containing ores and concentrates, arsenic can be present either in solid residues and tailings, liquid effluents or in flue dusts. Several of these forms of arsenic waste materials are soluble and therefore may cause the contamination of ground water, if disposed of without further treatment."

IN concentrating mills, where several millerals are recovered for realisation in more than one product, various systems are used to express the relative economic value of the work done, and, in the hope that it may prove of use to other operators, the writer will describe a system which, in his opinion, is more complete than any other that he has seen published.The controlling factor in all mill work must be based on the economic result represented by the greatest margin possible between the realizable value of the products and the cost of obtaining same.From a mill-man&apos;s point of view these are affected by the following factors:1. Metal contents of ore.2. Grade of products.3. Recoveries.4. Working costs.The grade of ore milled is usually outside the mill-man&apos;s control, but this may exercise a considerable influence on the grade of his products, metal recoveries, and revenue per ton of ore. Higher grades or recoveries may be obtained by using a more expensive process, or by additional grinding or reagents, and the economic comparison can only be arrived at by obtaining an analysis showing the monetary value of each variation within the possible limits.In the system to be described, the value of unit variations of metal contents of the ore, grade of products and recoveries are calculated in terms of a monetary unit per ton of ore with the returning charges ruling, and any suitable metal prices.
