Let's start at the beginning, Mr. Turner. Where and when were you born? In Lansing, Mich., on July 31, 1880. And what was your education? I went to the University of Michigan, where I got an A.B. degree in 1902; then to the Michigan College of Mines at Houghton, graduating from there in 1904 with a B.S. and an E.M. What was your first job in the mining industry, Mr. Turner, and what were you paid? In the summer of 1902, 1 was a field assistant for the U. S. Geological Survey in southwestern Idaho and southeastern Oregon, working under Israel C. Russell, professor of geology at the University of Michigan, who incidentally, had just returned from an expedition to study the effects of the eruption of Mt. Pelee, on Martinique. I was paid $60 a month and found; in addition to doing geologic and hydrographic work, I cooked many of the meals for a party of four, and wrangled four horses. I slept for four months under the stars, without a tent.

Process control limitations have led to suboptimal performance of the crushing section of Sishen MineÆs Jig Plant. The performance of the PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller implemented during commissioning was hampered by the relatively small buffer capacity between the crushers and screens. The inability to maintain the tertiary crushing chamber under full choke conditions lead to inefficient crushing and reduced crusher product cubicity.Model predictive control (MPC) was implemented in the tertiary crusher plant in May 2012 and resulted in a throughput improvement of six per cent in its first month. The controller was further optimised and indicated a throughput improvement of 16 per cent during on/off testing in July 2012. The throughput improvement is attributable to the finer crusher product resulting from operating the crusher under full choke conditions and controlled feed rate to the tertiary crusher plant screens. The next step is to couple the model predictive controller, automated gap control system and an economic optimiser to ensure maximised throughput and value from the resource.CITATION:Leeka, E K, 2013. A program of stress change and roadway deformation monitoring was undertaken to measure the forward abutment load distribution about a retreating longwall panel at Dartbrook Mine. The results of this monitoring allow roadway conditions observed at various stages of mining to be ranked according to the estimated vertical stress they have experienced. This ranking also provides a means to predict and visualise future roadway conditions at various stages of mining. This paper presents the results of the monitoring and describes the approach developed to predict future roadway conditions. The monitoring results show the vertical stress distribution associated with the front abutment from a longwall goal decreases exponentially away from the goaf edge. The vertical stress distribution peaks at the goaf edge at 5 to 6 MPa stress increase and decreases to 1 MPa within 50 m becoming imperceptible beyond 100 m By scaling this measured distribution to reflect the loading environment, the vertical stress can be estimated for different overburden depths and different stages of mining. Photographs of roadway conditions at particular vertical stress levels provide a way to visualise roadway conditions at various stages of mining in the future

A joint effort by the Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)3was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), held up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSR's in the fifth phase of testing from mid-1993to early 1996. The SCSR's were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator (BMS) at PRC. These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform satisfactorily.

The contemporary seismic response analysis of structures using a finite element analysis code requires six elastic spring constants to address the six degrees of freedom ground/foundation contribution to the response of a structure to earthquake shaking. However, the ground response is nothing but linear. Thus, it is critical to address the effect of the nonlinear ground response to the performance of structures under strong earthquakes. This study specifically addresses the effect of pile foundation on building vibration using finite element analyses. The effect of single pile was first investigated and the load was applied at the pile head using the single-degree-of-freedom load at a time, including three translational loads in the x, y and z directions and three moment loads about the three respective axes. In this study, the coupling effects between two or more different loads were not investigated. A load is increased monotonically to investigate the nonlinear behavior of pile under various loads. The Mohr-Coulomb model was used to represent concrete. To explore the effect of soil models on the nonlinear spring functions, the following constitutive models of soils were used: linear elastic, Mohr-Coulomb model, Cap model, modified Cam-Clay model, and Duncan-Chang hyperbolic model.

Train services through the Channel Tunnel linking Britain and France where scheduled to be fully restored in February 2009 following several months of repairs after a major fire in the tunnel on Sept. 11, 2008. A lorry caught fire on a shuttle train carrying heavy goods vehicles bound for France through the 50-km- (31-mile-) long northern tunnel. The fire, that spread to other vehicles, raged for about 16 hours. The extreme temperatures of up to 1,000º C (1,832° F) caused extensive damage to about 600 m (2,000 ft) of the 7.6-m- (25-ft-) diameter tunnel?s concrete lining, approximately 11 km (7 miles) in from the French entrance. The Channel Tunnel operator, Eurotunnel, awarded the repair con-tract, estimated to be between ?50 to 60 million, to a consortium of Freyssinet, Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires (ETF) and Vinci Energies. Freyssinet was appointed to look after the civil engineering works, while ETF would be responsible for track and overhead wire restoration and Vinci Energies responsible for other equipment. The technique of hydrodemolition, which uses high-pressure water jets to remove concrete from various structures, was specified as the method to remove the fire damaged concrete. Freyssinet subcontracted the concrete removal to the specialist hydrodemolition and industrial cleaning contractor Philip Lasserat.

This Bureau of Mines publication presents an overview of mine electrical power systems research currently being conducted by the Bureau. The papers, given at a Technology Transfer Seminar, emphasize the increasing importance of research related to the safety considerations of underground coal mine electrical systems. Selected topics are included that summarize results of research in the areas of electrical shock prevention, explosion-proof enclosures and load centers, discriminating circuit breakers, and trailing cables. Other topics discussed at the seminar are published as separate sections of the Bureau of Mines Hand- book "Application Notes--Mine Electrical Power Systems."

In this paper, the authors give a brief overview of the current practice guidelines and tools for the seismic design of sheet pile quay walls, emphasizing how the design guidelines are lacking when the existing structure performance evaluation is required to meet performance-based criteria. Relying on recent experience they explain how the existing practices can be amended to focus more on performance evaluation as opposed to design. An example is given of an old sheet pile quay wall analyzed and evaluated for its performance according the recent performance criteria devised for Californian Marine Oil Terminals.

THE township of Costerfield is situated in the parish of Costerfield, county of Dalhousie, and lies 6 miles east of Heathcote and 30 miles south-east of Bendigo. It is separated from Heathcote by the Mt. Ida Range, which forms the western boundary of the Silurian formation. It is situated at the head-waters of Tin-pot Creek, a small southerly tributary of the Deegay Ponds Creek, which flows east to the Goulburn River.The field was discovered in 1860 by two prospectors, Coster and Field, who were guided there by a shepherd, M Nicol Coster and Field had already discovered an antimony lode about three miles nearer Heathcote, when M Nicol offered to guide them to the larger outcrop. The main Costerfield reef at that time projected above the surface, and was white through oxidation, though the bluey sulphide showed on fracture. No alluvial gold of any consequence was obtained at Costerfield, but a little was obtained, at Redcastle, 7 miles to the north, and in some of the gullies to the east.Following its discovery there came a period of prosperity to Costerfield, while the mining operations were confined to the oxidized zone. The early success of mining at Costerfield was due to the gold values, and it is probable that the oxidized zone was secondarily enriched. The earliest available record of values is a crushing of Coster and Co. on the Antimony reef (now known as the Costerfield reef), when 200 tons from a depth of 70 ft. averaged 4 oz. per ton in July, 1861. At this time a crushing mill had not yet been erected at Costerfield, and the ore was carted and treated at Redcastle. The massive antimony ore, consisting of mixed oxides and sulphides, was separated by hand-picking as "marketable ore," and the remainder crushed for gold. A higher average is recorded from South Costerfield in September, 1861, when a 15' cwt. parcel...

A simplified, three-dimensional, time-dependent, mechanistic model of the overburden-coal seam-floor interaction has been developed and validated at two Illinois coal mines. The model based on the thin plate theory can involve any complex layout of mine workings, time-dependent sequence of extraction and, rheological properties of immediate floor strata. The model output data consist of spatially distributed surface subsidence and its slope and curvature, as well as load acting on pillars in one or more panels. A comparison of calculated and monitored surface subsidence or in-mine convergence measurements has proven the model's effectiveness for surface subsidence and load transfer prediction.

A model for interstitial solid solutions has been considered in which a repulsive Potential exists between interstitial atoms in the solvent lattice. It has been shown that this model is consistent with the thermodynamic Properties of certain interstitial solid solutions. The model is then applied to the calculation of the variation of the diffusivity of carbon in au-tenite with composition. Although the energy levels at the saddle point, and thus the absolute values of dif-fusivity, cannot be calculated, it is shown that by taking the repulsive interactions between the diffusing atoms into account the functional form of the dependence of diffusivity on solute concentration can be derived. ThE composition dependence of the diffusivity, D, of carbon in austenite at a given temperature is well-known.'-3 smith3 tried to reconcile the observed composition dependence of D at 1000°C with the previously observed4 composition dependence of carbon activity using equations for D derived by arken5 and Fisher, Hollomon, and Turnbull,6 but was unsuccessful. In this paper we shall modify the approach of Fisher et al. by considering the "blocking" model7 for interstitial solid solutions, based on concept due to Speiser and Spretnak,' in which a repulsive potential exists between interstitial solute atoms in the solvent lattice, causing a certain number of interstitial sites to be "blocked" from occupancy by further solute atoms. We shall thus be able to describe the intimate relationship between the composition dependence of carbon diffusivity, a kinetic phenomenon, and the composition dependence of carbon activity in austenite. THEORY Consider for convenience one-dimensional interstitial diffusion in an fcc lattice in the [loo] direction. Fig. 1. The blocking model states that a nearest-neighbor octahedral site of a given solute atom has a probability, f, of being inaccessible to other solute atoms. The number of available sites for diffusion on a given plane will, therefore, depend on f, which is constant, and Nu, the number of solute atoms on that plane. "The problem of recovering potash from the mineral polyhalite (K2SO4.MgSO4.2CaSO4.2H2O), occurring in large quantities in the salt beds of Texas and New Mexico, has been under investigation at the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines continuously since 1928. Most of the results previously obtained have been published in technical journals and in a series of Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.The experiments described in the present report were performed to ascertain whether a continuous countercurrent extraction of calcined polyhalite by hot water would yield satisfactory recoveries and concentrations of sium sulphate in the top liquor. Previous investigation by Storch 4 had shown that the rate of solution of uncalcined polyhalite was too slow to be of value in an industrial process, and Storch and Clarke 5 had demonstrated that calcination of the polyhalite greatly, accelerated the rate of solution in hot water, allowing most of the potassium sulphate to be readily extracted."

"Ore mineralogy and texture are primary variables controlling mill recovery efficiency in flotation plants. However, tracking daily variations of key mineralogical characteristics such as species-by-species liberation is not possible with current on stream analysers and assay lab techniques. In addition, traditional plant mineralogical analysis limited by long data turn-around times from central analysis laboratories typically provides only a time-averaged view of mill performance, e.g. by means of monthly composite feed, con or tailings analysis.This paper presents the results of a development and first field test of an on-site Automated Mineralogy solution (MLA or QEMSCAN) with the specific goal of monitoring recovery variation, ore quality and flotation performance on a mineral species-by-species and day-by-day basis, from up to twelve million direct particle observations per month. The trial was performed at a Pb/Zn-Ag operation in the US from November 2012 to April 2013. The focus of the study was three-fold: to validate the robustness of equipment and operational procedures for daily use by mine site technicians at a remote mine site to develop a methodology to boil down hundred-thousands of Automated Mineralogy particle data from size-by-size con and tailings samples to a couple of numbers meaningful to chief metallurgists to monitor recovery trend changes and correlate these to changes in the feed properties and/or flotation efficiency.The study focused primarily on the Pb/Ag rougher-concentrator circuit. Ten polished blocks of two and three size fractions of con and tailings were prepared by mine site technicians during a daily twelve hour shift. Eight hours of daily measurement time by the instrument revealed an estimate of the dayÆs recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance for Freibergite (Ag-species) and Galena (Pb-species), within 36 hours from initial sampling. Data quality was assessed by means of calculated versus measured assay reconciliation. Cumulative sum curves of recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance reveal trend changes with a frequency of 1 to 4 weeks. These were correlated to cumulative sum curves of e.g. locked and slimed particle classes of the mineral species of interest, attempting to identify a possible root cause of recovery performance trend changes. After a five year period representing the strongest resource and commodity rally ever experienced, we are now faced with a subdued recovery following the global financial crisis. This renewed economic growth will be steady but eventually attain levels that reignite export demand out of China and other emerging nations, which are now reliant on increasing domestic demand to support their economies. This backdrop of weaker share prices and less available investment capital creates a greater imperative for company management to ensure that its share price is fully valued. The mining geologist plays an important role in achieving this outcome through direct estimation of asset value (resources) but also in strongly communicating the æupsideÆ value opportunity in both mine site and adjacent brownfields exploration and an efficient and technically sound mining operation. The contribution of mining geologists to assist in conducting analyst site visits should not be underestimated, particularly with reduced analyst coverage of the resources sector and some simplification in company analysis through ranking companies on Reserve and Resource positions.

"On a développé un procédé qui donne une fonte (2,3% C, 0,07% V) du V2O5 (99%) et un rutile synthétique (94% TiO2) à partir d'un minerai, dont les réserves au Québec sont importantes. Le procédé comprend les opérations suivantes: 1) la concentration magnétique du minerai (30% Fe, 9% TiO2 et 0,65% V2O5) pour produire un concentré (65% Fe, 7% TiO2 et 1,6% V2O5); 2) le smeltage du concentré aggloméré dans un four à arc, sans fondant, pour produire une fonte et une scorie (30% FeO, 40% TiO2 et 8,0% V2O5) qui contient plus de 95% du vanadium et du titane présents dans le concentré; 3) le grillage alcalin (37% Na2CO3) de la scorie suivi d'une lixiviation à l'eau et de la précipitation de l'hexavanadate d'ammonium à partir du filtrat; 4) la lixiviation du résidu par l'acide sulfurique pur ou usagé pour produire un rutile synthétique. Un estimé préliminaire de la valeur économique du projet laisse croire à sa rentabilité à la condition que l'investissement pour le smeltage soit inférieur à environ 400$/tonne de fer.IntroductionLes gisements de magnétites titanifères sont nombreux dans le monde. Ils consistent en une magnétite étroitement liée a l'ilménite, La teneur trop élevée en TiO2 empêche l'exploitation de ces gisements pour la production de fer. Cependant, dans certains cas, la magnétite a une teneur intéressante en vanadium qui peut rendre l'exploitation de ces gisements rentable. Aujourd'hui, les magnétites titanifères constituent la plus importante source de production de vanadium. On estime qu'environ 70% du vanadium produit provient de ces sources."
