History The Cortez Mining District has a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862. More recently, Cortez Gold Mines had operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the US for treating higher grade, finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1.5 kt/d (1650 stpd) on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. In 1973, the mill was operated at 2 kt/d (2200 stpd) on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres, located 13 km (8 miles) west of Cortez, NV. In February 1976, the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operations. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs (Duncan and Smolik, 1977). The ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez were releached with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979. The surge in the price of gold in late 1979 sparked an interest to incorporate new techniques into treating lower grade and less oxidized carbonaceous ores at Cortez. In early 1980, heap leaching was started on low grade oxidized dump material left from the earlier Cortez mining operation. By June of 1980, testwork was completed on the London Extension Dump, a low grade, mildly carbonaceous dump at Gold Acres. It was decided to convert the mill at Cortez from the conventional cyanide leach CCD recovery plant to a carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery system. In May 1983, ore processing from the Horse Canyon deposit began. The Horse Canyon ore body contains both oxide and carbonaceous ores and is located 22.5 km (14 miles) from the Cortez mill. The Cortez CIL circuit was expanded to handle a blend of oxide and carbonaceous ores from Horse Canyon. Ore selection In the last quarter 1979, gold prices were increasing to a point where restarting the Cortez mill, idled since 1976, appeared imminent. Several previously explored geologic reserves at various stages of development were available as possible sources of feed for the mill. Initial metallurgical testing of dumps and tailings from earlier operations was completed, and previously uneconomic deposits were explored. It was decided to pursue sources of ore with the least lead time to production and those with the least capital cost requirements. A master plan was developed to bring the four profitable ore resources into production. Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993 (original title: Rock engineering system performance monitoring using neural networks.) Synthetic and analytical approaches to objective-based design of rock engineering projects are discussed. Rock masses are considered as complex dynamic systems with components that concurrently interact with each other and their environment. The existence of a rock engineering system canon (i.e. a set of systems governing rules) is proposed. Its possible components are highlighted and an application is demonstrated using a "rock mass automaton" designed to simulate dynamic heat distribution in rock. In the example given, the canon implements the basic result from probability theory applied to the thermodynamics of solids. Rock engineering system performance is reduced to the mapping of the output of a rockmass to varying input (design) options, within the state space of the systems model. The Kohonen Self-Organising Map provides an extremely useful analytical tool to reduce the hyper-dimensionality of rock engineering system behaviour. Further, the hyper-dimensional state vector is mapped "quasiconformally" such that the neural map tends to spatially organise similar input state vectors, facilitating interpretation of rock engineering system behaviour (performance monitoring). Work is reported on the development and validation of the automation as a basis for an internal representation of the rock mass bahaviour. The results are reported of simulations compensating for the uncertainty of the exact mechanisms operating within the rock mass, using additive noise with the input state vector in the training stages of the self-organising map implementation. Initial work on adopting Grossberg's Adaptive Resonance Theory neural network architecture for classification of rock engineering systems behaviour is also presented

The Beckman Air Comparison Pycnometer is as accurate as the specific gravity bottle for the determination of the volume of fine powders, or particles, up to 50 c.c. in volume. The determination using the air comparison pycnometer is performed in a much shorter time.A graph of density versus iron content for samples from four different iron ore deposits shows that iron contents can be obtained to within 4 per cent iron. Field geologists should be able to obtain quick and relatively accurate iron contents of ore samples using the air comparison pycnometer at these deposits.INTRODUCTIONA Beckman Model 930 Air Comparison Pycnometer was purchased to decrease the time required for the determination of the volume of stones and powders. The liquid displacement method was used previously and the time required per determination varied from a few minutes for stones to half an hour, or more for fine powders. With the air comparison pycnometer, the determination takes approximately 2 min and can be quickly checked for accuracy by a further determination. One of the fundamental issues having a great influence on the safety of operations performed in underground mines is the support of workings which should assure their stability in a given geological setting and mining-technical conditions during the life of their use. The process of designing and planning support for roadways may use analytical and empirical, as well as numerical methods. In view of the rapid increase in the data processing capacity of computers and the development of more and more enhanced software for numerical modeling, it seems to be advantageous to use numerical methods in searching for design solutions ? especially in the case of non-typical mining and geological conditions and in cases that need to take into consideration a great number of factors. The assessment of rock mass quality is of basic significance in designing mine supports. Fractures, dividing the rock mass into blocks, have an essential influence on the stability of the rock mass and underground construction. This paper presents examples of the fundamental underground investigations on the rock mass conducted by the Department of Extraction Technologies and Mining Supports of the Central Mining Institute in Poland, such as: penetrometric tests, introscopic examination, laboratory testing of rock samples and ground penetrating radar. Moreover, this contribution also presents examples of applications of three-dimensional numerical modeling for the purposes of stress-strain analysis of the rock mass around mine workings and computer-aided support design by means of FLAC3D (developed by Itasca) and Cosmos/M (developed by Structural Research and Analysis Corporation).

Controlling the level of impurities in copper refinery electrolytes is essential to achieving acceptable cathode purity. Purge of electrolyte is not an entirely satisfactory solution since the cost of neutralization, waste disposal, and replacement acid can be appreciable. The APU® process utilizes ion exchange resin to sorb sulphuric acid while rejecting metal salt impurities. Extensively employed for recovery of waste pickling and anodizing acids since 1977, the system is now being used at several refineries for removal of contaminants such as antimony, bismuth, iron, and nickel. The purified acid, which is recovered from the resin by water elution, is recycled back to the refinery tank-house, while the metals are typically recovered from the de-acidified by-product solution by precipitation.

The paper describes the adopted technologies and performance controls related to a special geotechnical engineering solution provided within the scope of the Galataport Project, in Istanbul, Turkey. The scheme is the one applied to the new quay of Salipazari, which is a combination of retaining structure and ground improvement, formed by a combi-wall, a reinforced concrete diaphragm wall and a soil improvement by deep soil mixing (Turbojet). The paper highlights the importance of employing cutting-edge technologies within the foundation engineering field and state-of-the-art electronic control devices, in parallel with the essential human expertise, in order to obtain the desired results in this high profile Project. The results of the in-situ and laboratory tests carried out on the improved soil are also presented. Main discussed points are: • History of Galataport and main Project details. • Design principle and soil condition for the new quay of Salipazari. • Difficulties encountered during execution of DSM. • Preliminary field trial tests conducted to establish the operational parameters, with relevant in-situ and laboratory tests executed. • Preliminary tests on material used for DSM (seawater and CEM IV SR). • Electronic equipment mounted on the rig, which allows the automatic execution of DSM columns. • Final QA/QC tests conducted to verify the performance of DSM, mainly consisting in: coring with relevant laboratory tests on samples (UCS + Es), seismic refraction tomography and seismic cross hole tomography. Correlations between UCS and Es, and between Es and Edyn are also presented. • A cross section of the executed treatment could be inspected on site during excavation. Photos and considerations are also presented.

Rare earth ferrosilicide is a versatile alloy mainly used to control the detrimental effects of sulfur in steel and to modify graphite structures in cast iron. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum conditions to make rare earth ferrosilicon alloy using a preconcentrate produced from a bastnasite type of ore present in the Beylikahir-Eskisehir region of Turkey. This concentrate contained 23.5%REO, 41.37% CaF2, 10.69% BaSO4, 8.50% CaCO3, 4.18%Fe2O3, 2.83% Al2O3, 2.74% SiO2, 1.20% P2O5 and small amount of other oxides. The initial metallothermic reduction of this concentrate using ferrosilicon and aluminum in a graphite crucible placed in a muffle furnace gave very low recoveries due to the difficulties encountered in adjusting the slag composition, temperature and amount of additives. Therefore, two batches of rare earth oxide concentrate containing 61.1% and 81.7% cerium oxide, respectively, that were procured from a Turkish glass producer, were used to optimize with respect to temperature, duration, slag-making additives and amount of reducers. In these experiments, smelting and reduction was done in an induction furnace with graphite crucible, and, ferrosilicon and aluminum were added after melting the charge. As a result, there was no difficulty in obtaining a rare earth ferrosilicon alloy containing 35-55% RE, 5-25% Fe and 20-40% Si, with about 80% metal recovery. When the optimum conditions were applied to the preconcentrate, alloys of similar compositions were obtained with 70-80% recovery. Experiments were also done with mixtures of preconcentrate and rich concentrate, and, recoveries as high as 95% were obtained. Only in this case, to increase the recovery, mixtures had to be charged to the empty graphite crucible after heating the crucible to the required temperature.

Increased competition in today’s global economy has put mineral industry under excessive pressure to effectively manage production assets to generate business wealth. Capital intensive industry (CII) organizations are seeking ways to manage skill resources, internal processes, and organizational networks with a view to reduce the cost of ownership of assets and increase efficiency of operations and service. The emerging concept of Enterprise Asset Management(EAM) is a collection of business processes that allow CII with right focus on return on investment on assets, to make right decisions on planning, acquisition, maintenance, operation, rehabilitation, and disposal of assets. Information technology (IT) can drive significant returns if the infrastructure covers seamlessly all business processes and all systems, like geographic information system, maintenance management, investment management, laboratory information management, and supervisory control and data acquisition system. The simple approach to IT in the past with disconnected silos of technology, information, and business processes cannot deliver the expected benefits under the modern business environment. Identification of business and application component is a prerequisite for the development of an asset management system that links effectively disciplined processes having characteristics of agility, speed, and integration. This paper discusses various issues and outlines the steps for developing an asset management roadmap in an organizsation. It also presents major business and application components of the system. A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

Quality control is essential for augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles (also known as continuous flight auger (CFA) piles outside the United States) and drilled displacement (DD) piles since the pile is constructed below the ground surface out of the direct sight of the personnel constructing and inspecting the pile. ACIP piles are being successfully constructed to support high-rise structures, hospitals, arenas and stadiums, mass transit systems, and power and industrial facilities. The use of DD pile technology is also gaining ground in the United States, typically utilizing proprietary systems such as Omega (currently utilized by Richard Goettle Inc., and LG Barcus and Sons, Inc.), Berkel, and DeWal (currently utilized by Morris-Shea). Different types of ACIP/DD pile installation equipment are shown in Figures 1 and 2. ACIP piles are installed into granular and cohesive soils, and soft rock to lengths currently approaching 130 ft (39.5 m), with diameters up to 24 to 36 inches (610 to 915 mm), and sustaining design loads approaching 900 kips (4000 kN). Current DD pile installation equipment in the United States is capable of installing up to 79-ft-long (24 m) piles with diameters ranging from 12 to 18 inches (305 mm to 460 mm).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an alkaline oxidative pretreatment to increase the recovery of gold from refractory sulfide ores containing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) and/or pyrite (FeS2). Pretreatment of a low grade ore containing 0.4% FeAsS, 3.5% FeS2, and 2.74g/mt Au with 1.2m NaOH, 40 psig o2, 100° C, and 4 hr in a 2-L autoclave resulted in 94 to 96% sulfide oxidation. cyanidation of the pretreated residue resulted in 88% Au extraction compared to <20% Au extraction for untreated ore. Cyanide consumption was 0.25 kg NaCN per metric ton of ore. A flowsheet for treating sulfidic low-grade gold ore is proposed.

Tip post-grouting of bored pile (drilled shaft) foundations refers to a method where cementitious grout is injected beneath the tip of a shaft to improve the overall performance of the constructed foundation. This technique, when performed satisfactorily and in the appropriate ground conditions, enhances axial load-displacement performance by improving the mobilization of pile’s resistance. Potential benefits associated with tip post-grouting include reduced settlement under loading, better alignment of load transfer curves, and improved ground beneath the base of the bored pile. However, to be able to realize the benefits attributed to this method, the design, construction, of both the bored pile and the post-grouting system must meet a minimum level for quality assurance. The various factors affecting the successful installation and performance of a bored pile (e.g., workmanship, base cleanliness, borehole integrity, and concrete placement) have been discussed by numerous practitioners and researchers in the available technical literature. For a conventional (i.e., ungrouted) bored pile, acceptance is based on a combination of visual inspection, material testing, and the results of integrity and/or performance testing of the constructed pile. A properly executed tip post-grouting program can be a relatively comprehensive and complex process, which is typically evaluated throughout the construction process based on the results of prior projects and/or on test pile(s) at the particular site. For tip post- grouting programs, verification procedures and acceptance criteria should be established during and incorporated into the design process to ensure design intent and objectives are achieved. Project specifications should be produced to ensure performance requirements are achieved. This paper will present and discuss factors affecting the successful execution of tip post-grouting, including grouting criteria, instrumentation, reliability and uncertainty with the method and outcome, and verification and acceptance. INTRODUCTION Constructing bored piles (drilled shafts) is increasingly more challenging given the lack of ideal site locations, tight project site confines, difficult or restricted access, greater demands on drilling equipment, and close proximity to adjacent structures. To evaluate the feasibility of bored piles as an appropriate foundation system, a myriad of factors is evaluated during design, including site conditions and constraints, budgeting and scheduling, reliability and risk exposure, presence of and depth to adequate load bearing soils/rock, and the magnitude of the imposed loading. Moreover, updated design codes increased load demand per element, and improved material strengths have led to more complex foundation designs, larger foundation elements, and significant increases in load magnitude. Monopile (monoshaft) foundations have been utilized where one large bored pile is used in lieu of a group of piles connected via a pile cap. In addition, to accommodate the design criteria, site conditions, and imposed loading, the geometry of the bored piles being designed and installed have been as large as 13 feet (4 m) or greater in diameter and to depths in excess of 260 feet (80 m).

J.--It requires a good deal of timber to operate, especially the caving systems. An important function in mine operations now seems to be forestry and to operate a timber tract in order to insure a supply of timber. By depleting the timber resources of your section, you only increase your costs later when timber must be brought in from the Pacific Coast or the East. Our experience has been that any square-set method of timbering is the most expensive. Timbering for stoping systems, top slicing if you will, although it uses a large volume of time does not require as expensive timbering as the square-set method; also it does not require as long a life for-the timber, so that such wood as birch and maple, which have strength but not long life under the fungus conditions in the mine, may be used. All the drifts in the orebody are thoroughly timbered, and it has required a lot of timber. If we had it to do over, we would spend a lot more money in the development of rock drifts; as a matter of fact, we must ultimately come to that any way.

Rate laws for the hydrogen reduction of metal ions are typically of the form: [r = -d[M(II)]/dt = k[M(II)]xPy2H] where k is an apparent rate constant, [M(II)] and PH2 represent dissolved metal concentration and hydrogen pressure respectively, while x = 0 - 1 and y = 0.5 - 2. Half-order dependences have been reported for some M(II)/H2 systems; however, no satisfactory explanations have been offered. In an effort to bridge this gap in our understanding, the published precipitation rate data (for M(II) = Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II)) are reviewed (with emphasis on the reported reaction orders) and compared with the corresponding but limited electrochemical polarization data. Based on the available literature on the electrochemical kinetics of the M/M(II) and H2/H+ systems it is demonstrated theoretically that, under certain conditions (e.g., in the presence of electron-conducting solids), the rate of the M(II)/H2 reaction can be expressed as: [-d[M2+]/dt = k[M2+]2/1P2/12H] It is concluded that electrochemical processes probably play an important role in the hydrogen reduction of metal ions, especially for systems that involve heterogeneous catalysis.

The upper amphibolite-grade mctasediments of thc rinaroo area, North Queensland, form part of a regional aurcole to the large Tinaroo Batholith and are the stratigraphic equivalents of the Hodgkinson Formation of gencrally low metamorphic grade. There is no evidence of any lithological unconformity.The higher grade metasediments have a more complex deformation history than is typical for thc surrounding region and this may bc due to one or a combination of two factors; an additional strain componcnt associated wilh the intrusion of Ihe Tinaroo Batholith, or a more marked finite strain response to the overall regional stress field within hotter. more ductile rocks.Four deformational events can be characterized within Ihc Tinaroo Area. Close to Ihe Tinaroo Batholith D1 and D2, arc so strongly developed that they disrupl the continuily of Ihe original Iithological layering. In the aureole region, D1 is strongly overprinted and its original fabric intensity is obscured, but both D2 and D3 display a mappable decrease in intensity away from the granite margin. These three deformations occurred during Carboniferous or early Permian time. D4 is later and only patchily developed.The broad, moderate pressure metamorphic aureole surrounding the Tinaroo Batholith is a typical of the CairnsCooktown group of Permo-Carboniferous granitoids. which usually develop narrow, lower pressure contact aureoles. Two periods of metamorphism are distinguishable. The first reached peak temperatures somewhat greater than 520&#176;C, the second temperatures around 620-630&#176; C immediately adjacent to the granite contact.Several cale-silicate lenses containing scattered scheelite mineralization occur within the area. Scheelite appears to have crystallized at the same time as the cale-silicate minerals, its appearance coinciding with the intrusion of the Tinaroo Batholith. Unlike many &quot;skarn-type&quot; scheelite deposits, the scheelite-bearing cale-silicates are Fe-poor, with no positive correlation between total Fe and W.

"INTRODUCTION Santiago de Chile is a 7 million inhabitant city which has a 103 Km long subway network operated since 1975 by Metro S.A. This network is used on a daily basis by 2.3 million people. In 2012 Metro S.A. started the biggest enlargement of the network in its history, through the design and construction of the new Line 3 (21.7 Km) and Line 6 (16.5 Km). The detailed engineering contract for civil underground works of Line 6 (L6) was awarded to the Consortium integrated by ZAÑARTU Ingenieros Consultores and GEOCONTROL S.A., in which Geocontrol was in charge of the design of 11 stations and 14.5 Km of tunnel. L6 crosses L3 in Ñuble and Ñuñoa Station, L2 at Franklin Station and ends, intersecting L1, at Los Leones Station as shown in Figure 1. LOS LEONES STATION DESIGN Location and Characteristics Los Leones Station is placed at the North end of the L6, next to the same named station of the L1 and it has four construction units, as is shown in Figure 2: I. Access Shaft (49 m x 47 m). II. Access Gallery (34 m long). III. Station Tunnel (120 m long). IV. Connection Gallery with L1 (104 m long). A singular feature of Los Leones is that the western section of the station tunnel, built from the access gallery, is located below an underground parking lot which is located in Providencia Avenue, as shown in Figure 3. It is important to highlight that the distance between the vault of Los Leones Station Tunnel and the foundations of the underground parking lot is only 6 m."

The Hoyle Pond underground mine is located in the Porcupine Gold Camp, 18 km east of downtown Timmins. Since the initiation of production in 1985, the operation has produced in excess of 1.9 million ounces of gold at a grade of 15 grams per tonne. Currently, Hoyle Pond ranks 8th in total ounce production for all past and present producing mines in the camp, with the highest head grade of any of the significant past, or present producing mines in Timmins. Cut and fill, shrinkage, longhole and panel mining methods are employed to excavate the narrow gold bearing structures. Using illustrative examples, this paper provides an overview of factors, such as geologic setting, rock mechanics challenges and mine infrastructure, which influence mine design at Hoyle Pond.
