Remediation of contaminated soil represents a significant market for application of Deep Soil Mixing (DSM). Eighty-one percent of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Program’s site remedies have involved contaminated soil. Contaminated soil is frequently treated by In-situ Solidification/Stabilization (ISS). ISS treatment of contaminated soil involves mixing binding agents into soil using DSM techniques. DSM is a core business for many DFI members. Members may improve and broaden their services to clients by learning about the recent ISS treatment of contaminated soil at a Superfund site. ISS treatment is part of the EPA-selected remedy for a Superfund Site in the metro New York City area. The property has seen heavy industrial use for more than a century. Soil at the site is contaminated with a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including coal tars and heavy metals, principally arsenic and lead. Beginning in 2017 and continuing through 2018, approximately 150,000 cubic yards (115,000 cubic meters) of soil will be treated by ISS at the case study site. Portland cement and slag cement are mixed into the soil by DSM techniques using GPS guided excavators to immobilize the hazardous constituents within the treated soil. ISS treatment by DSM will contribute to redevelopment of this valuable property. This paper will describe ISS constructability and performance, case study grout mix design with geotechnical results for strength and permeability, and deep soil mixing techniques. INTRODUCTION In-situ solidification and stabilization (ISS) is a deep soil mixing (DSM) technique applied in the environmental remediation field to physically encapsulate, or chemically bind, contaminates of concern such that the impacts to human health and the environment are mitigated. Common remediation applications of ISS include mixing cementitious reagents into contaminated soils to form a monolithic mass with desired performance characteristics, and the installation of vertical subsurface walls designed to control groundwater movement. A key characteristic of ISS is that the contaminated soils are treated in their existing location at the project site and then are left in place after treatment. Typical performance characteristics of the ISS treated soils include improved unconfined compressive strength (UCS), reduced hydraulic conductivity (HC), and reduced leaching potential of soil contaminants. Increased shear resistance of the treated soil may also be a performance requirement where seismic loading is a concern.

INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km (4.4 miles) of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Shank-Ohbayashi has two of the tunnelling contracts on this initial phase: A-171 and A-146. Contract A-171, the Wilshire/Alvarado Line, involves tunnel construction beneath 7th Street from the 7th/Flower Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. The project consists of the excavation and lining of 3000 m (9900 ft) of twin-bore, 6.7 m (22 ft) excavated diameter, 5.5 m (18 ft) finished diameter subway tunnels. Contract A-146, the 5th/Hill to 7th/Flower Tunnels, comprises 1220 m (4000 L.F.) of twin-bore tunnel identical in cross section to the tunnels in Contract A-171. The majority of the excavation on Contract A-171 is beneath city streets in a weak siltstone/claystone bedrock with cover varying between 10 m and 25 m (32 ft and 82 ft) to the street surface. Approaching the 7th/Flower Station some fine-grained alluvium is encountered. The tunnels on both contracts are excavated with an open face digger equipped shield. On Contract A-146 the tunnel alignment is a 305 m radius curve of approximately 550 m (1800 L.F.) length underneath several multi-storied buildings of various construction. Excavation is still ongoing on Contract A-146. The contractor's choice for initial tunnel support on both contracts is a system of precast concrete segments similar to what the contractor had used on 7 miles of tunnel in Phoenix, Arizona, for the Arizona Department of Highways.

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) become law April 5, 1644, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this program bulletins were published on a pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and oil shale.5 The Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because coal gasification is prerequisite to Hither the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable, collection of technical information in this form will be valuable. The material is presented in three parts, as follows: I. United States Patents. II. United Kingdom, Australian, Canadian, and South African Patents. III. Belgium, French, German, Italian, and Swedish Patents. The domestic patents for this bulletin were collected between 1963 and 1955. Some of the Foreign Patents were collected at the same time and a few of them later in 1961. Part I was published in 1960; Part II was published in 1962.

Based on field observations and physical modeling of simulated materials, the dynamic equilibrium principle on the whole interaction process between the surrounding rocks and support of large deformation roadways in coal mines has been developed. It explains the methods of forming the bolted strata and its changing load capacity with deformation. It also points out the factors and conditions for forming the bolted strata as follows: (1) many entries in coal mines are subject to large deformation. During their service life, it goes through the following process, elastic > plastic > fiacture > broken > loosening, etc. During this dynamic process, the mechanisms of supporting structure are changing and therefore the interaction between support and rocks experiences a process of dynamic equilibrium. Furthermore, the required supporting force for stabilizing the surrounding rocks shows overall decreasing trend; (2) the bolted strata is a special supporting structure consisting of bolt, rock skin protection devices and rock strata within the bolted horizon. As deformation increases, the supporting structure of the broken strata within the bolted horizon experiences a process of periodic change, from equilibrium > not equilibrium > equilibrium. Corresponding to this change, the supporting capacity of the bolted strata also fluctuates and gradually decreases; (3) under the bolted strata, the stability of a large deformation roadway is dynamic and step-wise; and (4) the formation of bolted strata, especially bolted broken strata depends on the existence of compressive force. Supporting the bolted strata is not constrained by the quality of the surrounding rocks. It has broad range of application.

Sag Mills are becoming bigger in size almost every year. Concentrator plants are also becoming larger with more SAG and Ball Mills units with Gearless Mill drives installed in one plant. In contradiction to this development, concentrator plants are being built in increasingly remote areas, where the power supply and network conditions are not necessarily covering the needs for the operation of such plants. This paper describes sources of harmonic distortions and possible approaches to solve this problem. It also illustrates the permissible tolerances in terms of commutation of power electronics, based on already realized installations. Furthermore it explains how, and with which measures, harmonic currents created by non-linear loads with SAG and Ball Mill drives can be handled, and how harmonic standards can be fulfilled accordingly. Finally, this paper gives an overview about the technical impact of a strong versus weak network, and the economic relationship between them.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the performance of portable power cables under transient conditions. This research had a twofold purpose: (1) to define the thermal characteristics of electrically overloaded trailing cables, and (2) to conceptualize electrical protection for cables that allows maximum cable efficiency without diminishing electrical safety in underground mines. Several tasks were under- taken in support of these goals during the 3-year research effort. Overload tests ranging from 2 to 12 times rated ampacity were conducted in the Bureau's Mine Electrical Laboratory. Two thermal models of energized type G-GC trailing cables were constructed, one based on thermodynamic theory and the other using empirical data from previous Bureau load tests. The empirical model was then incorporated into an interactive computer program that can assist designers and approvers of mining machines in selecting the appropriate size trailing cable. This program can be the basis for a cable protection system that ensures that cables are not the source of fires, ignitions, burns, or explosions underground.

In April 1997, Kiewit/Parsons Brinckerhoff (K/PB) completed the 7,600-m (25,000-ft) primary access tunnel for the Yucca Mountain, NV proposed high-level nuclear waste site. K/PB then began boring an exploratory east-west cross drift tunnel at the site. The 2,681-m (8,796-linear ft)East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was excavated through volcanic tuffs having zones of incompetent rock using a rebuilt Robbins 5-m (16.4-ft)hard-rock tunnel boring machine(TBM) with a special arrangement of supporting equipment. This portion of the Yucca Mountain project was completed in eight months.

The US economy continued to grow steadily in 1988, reaching an annual rate of $5 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion = 1012). The value of domestically processed mineral-based materi¬als rose 20% to $300 billion (US billion 109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 40% to more than $10 billion, industrial minerals rose 6%' to $20 billion, and recycled scrap more than doubled to $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were 95 cents and $1.68 for copper, 52 cents, and $1.30 for aluminum, 34 cents and 42 cents for lead, and 43 cents and 75 cents for zinc. A number of mining and metal companies experienced significantly increased profitability. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. About 246 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production remained at the 1987 level of 7.1 million units. Truck and bus production, however, rose 7% to 4.1 million units. New housing starts fell 7% to 1.5 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. By year-end, imports of crude and refined petroleum exceeded domestic crude oil production. Such imports cost $42 billion. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials were valued at $44 billion and exports at $35 billion. The US and Canada-the world's two largest trading partners-consummated a historic free trade agreement. In February, President Reagan transferred responsibility for stockpiling strategic and critical materials to the Secretary of Defense. And, in July, the GSA group that bought, stored, rotated, and sold stockpiled materials was transferred to the Defense Department's Defense Logistics Agency. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing attention to chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve, was amended to include provisions for averting harm to national security from foreign takeovers. The DPAct, in effect through September 1989, is now up for further extension. Under the Act, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. During the year, consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American Defense Industrial Base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 5% to 870 Mt (960 million st). Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 57% of US electricity. Exports included 56 Mt (62 million st) of metallur- gical coal and 29 Mt (32 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $4 billion. Domestic petroleum produc¬tion fell 2% to 574 hm3 (3.6 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, was unchanged at 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals Raw steel production-a major con¬sumer of many minerals-rose 14% to 92 Mt (102 million st). Domestic iron ore production rose 25% to 59 Mt (65 million st), about 96% pelletized. Net imports rose 37% to 16 Mt (18 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity of 102 Mt (112 million st) was unchanged. THE stage is set for the 1930 Annual Meeting. It will take place in the Engineering Societies Building. Feb. 17, 18, 19 and 20, and an unusual pro- gram of technical papers, symposia, lectures and addresses, interspersed with luncheons, dinners, excursions and worthwhile entertainment for the four days has been arranged. The curtain rises on Monday morning and the first act is by the entire company-registration. Then the meeting hits its stride, for there are ten technical sessions on Monday, and the range of subjects includes most of the Institute membership. The Committee on Coal and Coal Products, which is about to become the Coal Division, presents a symposium of a dozen or more papers on Coal Classification, concluding its afternoon session with several papers on general subjects. At its luncheon between sessions, C. E. Bockus, president of the National Coal Association, will be the honored guest. Papers of theoretical character will be discussed at the morning session of the Committee on Geophysical Prospecting; at its afternoon session there will be presented summaries of results obtained at various properties by methods described at previous meetings of this group and permanently recorded in "Geophysical Prospecting," published by the Institute early in 1929. Members of the Petroleum Division should not overlook the paper by Theodor Zuschlag, on this Committee's program. It is entitled, "Oil Structure Mapping by the Sundberg Method." Members of the Iron and Steel and Institute of Metals divisions will find it profitable to attend the session on Engineering Education on Monday afternoon. E. A. Holbrook has arranged a program of ten-minute talks on Metallurgical Education which are designed to get down to "brass tacks." and the practical man may, in discussion, contribute as well as learn. At 5 p. m. Thomas T. Read will lecture+ at Columbia University, on "Recent Progress in Economics of the Mineral Industries."

"Column flotation circuit engineering has matured to a good level of understanding regarding testing, scale-up and design. Some of the factors important to the process of implementing columns are addressed in this paper, highlighting the following issues• operating bias and the maximum achievable solids carrying rate for a column application.• internal circulating loads of full scale and pilot plant flotation columns• short-circuiting oflarge scale columns and the impact on separation selectivity• the number of stages in a column circuit and the impact on selectivity.The paper uses several case studies, from pilot plant to full scale implementation, to illustrate these design issues.1. IntroductionTen years ago, in 1984, there were very few column flotation installations world wide and the largest columns were about I . 5 to 2 m diameter or square. During the following decade there have been in the heighbourhood of 80 column installations that have been successful and profitable, as both retrofits and green-fields plants. Now, columns as large as 3 to 4 m are not uncommon. Examples of installations with many large columns include Escondida, with ten columns each at 4 m square, and P T Freeport Indonesia, with 21 columns: nine 3 m diameter columns, four 2.4 m diameter columns and, starting up in April I 995, eight 3.6 m diameter columns.During this growth period there have also been column installations that can be considered as failures. In the majority of these cases, the reason for their failure has been an insufficient installed capacity for applications where there is a high weight recovery of solids to the froth product These include zinc cleaning, copper cleaning and iron ore flotation (silica flotation from a feed that is 15 to 30 %Si02) An application with high weight recovery to the froth product makes column scale-up and circuit design more complicated. This is particularly so if a high degree of selectivity is also required while attaining a high weight recovery, which can happen with iron ore flotation in columns."

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the mining industry has the highest average annual fatality rate (31.9 per 100,000 workers) among all major American industry. To address this, a major research program to reduce hazard exposure of miners with computer-assisted mining equipment was initiated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.1 One application involves the manual process of extracting and hauling coal where operators, in the tight confines of a mine, can be struck or caught by mobile machinery. The approach to remedy this problem uses a guidance system on the haulage equipment so that it follows the machine that extracts coal. This, in essence, involves sensor-based docking of the machines. Sensors that can survive the hostile mine environment of dust, methane gas, and water, play the key role. Computer analysis of the mining machine's movements and empirical machine characterizations were conducted to establish operating requirements and spatial limitations to ensure proper loading of coal into the haulage equipment. These data served in the selection of a sensing system. Various technologies such as scanning laser systems and ultrasonic sensors have frequently been used in other applications but were found unacceptable. However, a near infrared (IR) sensor employing active targets met the requirements. The sensor has a nominal 75° conical field-of-view and a range from 0.1 to 18.0 m. For the single target mode, nominal range accuracy was 4.3% at a distance of 3.56 m. Correction algorithms were generated reducing the error to 0.6%. Airborne dust testing showed less than 0.8% accuracy (worst case) degradation at levels exceeding (by a factor of 7.5) concentrations permitted by Federal law. The sensor can track multiple active targets providing five degrees-of-freedom (DOF) measurements. Using four targets, the nominal range accuracy was 0.4% without correction algorithms. A guidance system for the haulage system to follow the mining machine does not exist commer¬cially. Such a system can reduce fatalities and injuries by current haulage mining equipment, and is a viable alternative to current haulage control.

Keywords: Recycling, Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite, Ionic Liquids, BMIC Recycling of aluminum metal matrix composites (MMC) via electrolysis in ionic liquids at near room temperature was investigated. The electrolytic melt comprised of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIC) and anhydrous AlCl3. Impure aluminum composite (Duralcan MMC Al-380, 20 vol % SiC) was electrochemically dissolved at the anode and pure aluminum (>98%) was deposited on a copper cathode. The deposits were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractrometer, and mass spectrometer. The influence of various process parameters such as concentration of electrolyte, and applied cell voltage on the recycling process was studied. The recycling process yielded current densities in the range of 200-500 A/m2, and cathode current efficiency of about 85%. The results indicated that impurities such as Cu, Si, Ni, Fe, Mg, Mn, and SiC particles were removed as anode residue. Energy consumption of about 3.7-6.3 kWh/kg-Al was obtained at a cell voltage of 1.0-2.0 V and cell temperature of 100 ± 5°C. Low energy consumption and no emission of pollutants are the two main advantages of this process compared to present recycling processes.

INTRODUCTION The subway line B of Toulouse (France) has been realized with three different tunnel boring machines (TBM) techniques: Contracts 2 and 5 are excavated with earth-pressure balanced TBM, Contract 4 with a slurry shield TBM, and Contract 3 with a compressed-air TBM. The first three machines are around 7.7 m in diameter, while the last one is 5.3 m. Moreover, a small part of the line (50 m) has been excavated by a conventional method. The tunnels run through the Toulouse molasses, composed of hard sandy clay with pockets and lenses of dense sand. Geotechnical investigations have shown that in these formations, K0 is greater than 1, around 1.8 at a depth of 25 m (Serratrice,2005) and that geotechnical characteristics are homogenous on the whole layout (? =22 kN/m3, Su = 300 kPa, c' = 30 kPa, F' = 32°). The water table is found between 2 and4 m below ground level. As geology, stratigraphy and tunnel cover (between 10 and 20 m) are almost identical, a comparison of movements induced by the excavation by each of the four excavation techniques is possible. This paper presents the soil mass movement measures in the case of the conventional excavation method and in the case of TBM sections. It shows how tunneling parameters may explain the different surface movements observed during excavation. For the sake of simplicity, only the results of Contract 2 (earth pressure balanced TBM)will be presented. "The aim of this study was to develop a hydromellurgical processing for removal of arsenic from high-arsenic copper sulfide ores and concentrates, providing increase in copper recovery. In this study, three different enargite ore samples containing 28.2–46.7% copper, 1.9–15.0% arsenic and 10.6–27.5% iron were used to determine optimum conditions for the extraction of copper and removal of arsenic. High pressure oxidative leaching process was preformed using various leaching reagents such as sulfuric acid (H2SO4), ferric sulfate (Fe2(SO4)3), hydrochloric acid (HCl), ferric chloride (FeCl3), sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions and distilled water (DW), respectively, under the fixed conditions which were selected to be as follows: NaCl concentration, 0.34 M; concentrations of other leaching reagents, 0.1 M; particle size, -45 ?m; pulp density, 100 g/L; agitation speed, 750 rpm; leaching temperature, 160 ?C; leaching time, 60 min and total pressure (oxygen gas and vapor pressure) into an autoclave, 1 MPa. Results show that under the leaching conditions, more than 90% of copper leaching was achieved with lower than 2% arsenic content as a consequence of the formation of arsenic precipitates in a solution of Fe2(SO4)3–NaCl. It was determined that copper, arsenic and iron concentrations in the pregnant leach solution were 42 g/L, 0.3 g/L and 0.3 g/L, respectively. As a result, it can be concluded that the Fe2(SO4)3 solution in the presence of NaCl or FeCl3 are more efficient leaching media compared to other leaching agents under the high pressure oxidation conditions, because of their high copper recovery and lower arsenic level in the pregnant leach solution.INTRODUCTION Generally, copper is usually produced from copper sulfide ores by a combination of several processes which are flotation and smelting followed by refining [1-3]. Arsenic content in copper sulfide ores tends to increase due to the depletion of high grade copper deposits, hence conventional mineral processing and metallurgical processes cannot effectively treat these ores containing high levels of arsenic to obtain consistently high purity copper concentrates. Because high levels of arsenic in copper ores/flotation concentrates reduces the value of concentrates due to the restriction of smelting process and causes it to be a source of environmental pollution [4-6]. From this point of view, the known way of prevention against high-arsenic copper sulfide concentrates in further metallurgical treatments is to develop economically and environmentally competitive technologies for removal of arsenic impurity from copper sulfide ores before treating the ores/flotation concentrates by the pyrometallurgical routes."

Small scale gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been observed to use very low flow rates of water in sluice boxes. In a series of laboratory experiments carried out to determine whether this approach was unsatisfactory or not for their situation, indications were obtained that it had some advantages in the recovery of fine gold but at the cost of considerable throughput. The separation mechanisms operating in such a system are analysed.

The use of continuous flight auger piles has increased significantly in the U.K. to such an extent that it is now the most widely used method of constructing small diameter bored piles. This paper describes the improvements in equipment, techniques and particularly monitoring that have led to this growth. A review of the equipment in use describes how purpose built self erecting machines have been generally adopted. Improvements in ancilliary equipment are described. Concrete has almost completely replaced grout and techniques have been developed to extend the length of reinforcement that can be placed. Leading specialist contractors have developed instrumentation to monitor the construction of the pile (in terms of time, depth, torque, concrete pressure and flow) and keep a record for checking. A further significant development of this monitoring by means of sensors at various levels in the auger stem is described. The results obtained from this monitoring are reviewed and future developments discussed.

Federal mine safety regulations prohibit the recirculation of face air In a gassy Class III metal-non metal mine. Tg Soda Ash, Inc, operates a 2.0M ton/yr (2.2 million st/yr) underground gassy Class III trona mine In southwest Wyoming, currently liberating approximately 5,700 m3/day (200,000 ft3/day) of methane. Because of the low methane emissions and the incombustibllity of trona, it was decided that Tg would be an excellent environment to test recirculation at a U. S. gassy mine, for possible future use by Industry. A research program was begun with the cooperation of MSHA, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Utah, and Tg. Initial testing centered around re-using shop air under¬ground. Next, conduct a continuous miner section recirculation test to see how the face contamination was affected by 305m (1,000 ft) and 610m (2,000 ft) recirculation distances. A district test followed to examine the effects of the critical parameter - respirable dust. Finally, a long-term program to study respirable trona dust transportation and deposition in mine airways to plan for district fan siting and effects on face air dust levels.
