Recent work on grain growth in high purity aluminum and in a solid solution type alloy of aluminum and magnesium1 showed that the isothermal increase of the average grain diameter D with time follows the equation D = K(tg + A)2 Eq 1 Here tg is that portion of the total annealing time 1, which is available for grain growth, that is the annealing time less the time necessary for complete recrystallization. The parameters A and n depend only on the temperature. A has the dimension of time, and is usually of the same order of magnitude as the time for recrystallization: R. In some instances R may be substituted for A in Eq I. This is the case for example at long periods of annealing or at high temperatures, where both A and R become small in comparison with t. In such instances Eq I is simplified to D = K, tn Eq 2 For high purity aluminum the exponent n increases in the ratio of about I to 5 in. the temperature range of 350' to 6w°C. 70-30 brass has been long known to exhibit grain growth of the continuous type, such as occurs in pure metals. For this reason, it was of interest to determine whether grain growth in brass also follows Eq I and 2 as it does in aluminum. Isotherma1 grain growth data for 70-30 brass were published in recent years by R. S. French2 and by H. L. Walker.' Fig I shows a log D vs. log t plot of French's data, together with the 500, 600 and 700°C data by Walker for 42.8 pct reduction by rolling. In such a log D vs. log t plot Eq 2 corresponds to a straight line with a slope of n. As seen in Fig I, the data of French and the 600°C data of Walker can be represented by straight lines. However, the 500 and 7c0°C data of Walker give curved lines and the average slope of his 500°C line is very different from the slope of the line representing French's data for the same temperature. Furthermore the curvature of the 700°C line suggests a tendency for grain growth to stop after 8 hr. If confirmed, this would constitute a definite deviation from Eq 2, not explainable on the basis of the specimen thickness effect found in high purity aluminum.' Walker's specimens were 0.125 in., or 3.18 mm thick, while the deviation occurs at a grain size of approximately 0.4 mm. A further point of divergence arose recently, when J. E. Burke suggested4 on the basis of Walker's data, that, instead of Eq 2, grain growth in 70-30 brass follows the equation D - D, = K . tgn Eq 3 Here D, is the grain size as recrystallized at the temperature in question. Although it was possible to show5 that, for pure aluminum, for which isothermal grain growth has been carefully investigated, Eq 3 is incompatible with the experimental facts, the situation remained somewhat obscure with respect to 70-30 brass. "This paper reviews the Falconbridge- SMRQ’s Raglan project in northern Quebec and the process that was used in developing its current long-term mine plan. Challenges were many and not only limited to the longevity of the project, numerous ore deposits (both underground and open pit), and a 40 km property strike length. As a result of its remote northern location, other factors such as progressive reclamation, leachable mine waste, water treatment, and waste management were also part of the plan. A combination of modern planning tools were used to formulate the plan including DataMine, Mine 2-4D, AutoMod Simulation, and an Excel-based financial spreadsheet to bring the total plan together. The focus of the paper is to show the complexity of modern mine planning and associated economic modelling of mine processes. IntroductionThe Raglan project is located 1660 km directly north of Quebec at the northern tip of the Quebec Peninsula in Nunavik. The main property is 40 km in length stretching from the Donaldson airport area at the eastern edge of the property to East Lake at the western edge. The Deception Bay port is 90 km north of the main complex/mill situated at Katinniq which lies approximately in the middle of the property (Fig. 1). The mine processes 1 000 000 tpy of ore from both open pit and underground sources. The mill is forecasted this year to produce more than 150 000 t of concentrate grading more than 18% nickel. All personnel and critical cargo are transported to the site via a company-leased 737 jet from Rouyn-Noranda where the main administration office is located. The majority of cargo is shipped to the site via Deception Bay from Quebec and on the return trip, nickel concentrate is shipped back. From Quebec, the nickel concentrate is sent by rail to the Falconbridge smelter in Sudbury and on the reverse rail haul, nickel matte from the smelter is sent to Norway via Quebec."

J.-I am so thoroughly convinced of the growing importance of underground work in the production of limestone that I had the author make a detailed study of limestone mining for the Bureau of Mines and prepare a report on the principles of limestone mining. Many limestone operators, long accustomed to open¬pit work, are being forced to mining. About 6 months ago I thought there were twenty-five or thirty underground limestone operations in the United States but the author has been finding new ones until his list now runs nearer sixty. Some of these are very extensive; one at least has 4 ½ miles of underground workings. There is an ever-expanding field for the engineer in the operation of limestone mines and quarries. Some of the larger companies realize the need of skilled engineering advice, but many of the companies regard the engineer as an unnecessary expense. Although almost every metal mine, even those handling only a few hundred tons of ore per month, employs a mining engineer, many limestone operations ten times as large employ no mining engineers. This paper provides a history of the challenges that were experienced while treating both the clayey oxide gold ores and the supergene copper-gold ores at the Boddington Gold Mine during the period 1989 to 2001. However the bigger challenge was to find a process flow sheet that would allow the economic treatment of the large low-grade competent gold-copper resource that underlies the oxide and supergene gold resource. Metallurgical test work and engineering studies on this resource started in the mid 1990s and culminated in the approval in 2006 of the 35 Mtpa Boddington Expansion Project to treat this material. The process flow sheet provides the basis of an energy efficient comminution circuit that includes high pressure grinding rolls and a treatment circuit with gravity separation, flash and conventional flotation to produce a precious metal low-grade copper concentrate followed by cyanide leaching of the rougher-scavenger and cleaner tailings streams. The treatment circuit allows maximum removal of copper minerals prior to cyanide leaching and so provides an environmentally responsible tailings disposal circuit.

The effects of potassium ethyl xanthate collector and potassium dichromate used as a depressor on a PbS mineral were studied by high frequency impedance technique. Measurements of complex permittivity, at 100 MHz suggested that is possible to obtain from isotherm adsorption the adequate industrial collector concentration being this in the range of lE-3 to 5E-3M of KEX. The e' values (320-420) in the PbS-KEX system was increased as the KEX concentration was lowered). In the other hand the PbS- K2Cr2O7 system showed higher values of e' (420-510) as the K2Cr2O7 concentration was increased. The PbS-KEX-K2Cr2O7 system was evaluated.

The MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel project includes three main work shafts, excavated primarily in rock. Shaft L is 9.8 m (32 ft) diameter and 124.1 m (407 ft)deep. Shaft E is 7.0 by 12.8 m (23 by 42 ft) and 91.4 m (300 ft) deep. Shaft 5A is 7.9m (26 ft) diameter and 72.5 m (238 ft) deep. Construction methods are compared and contrasted. Lessons learned involve a differing site condition in soil overburden, contractor-proposed modifications, and remedial slurry wall work. Other aspects discussed include noise and vibration control, groundwater inflow, water treatment, muck handling and contract administration issues.

RECENT papers by Williams, Sherwood, and Boothby,1 Seybolt et al.2 Heikes; and Roberts4 attest to the increasing importance of the hexagonal ferromagnetic compound MnBi. Since the magnetic properties of MnBi crystals are highly anisotropic, it is useful and necessary to have appropriate aids for determining their orientations—a (00.1) standard stereographic projection and a corresponding table of crystallographic angles for this structure. The tables of crystallographic angles for the hexagonal system available in the literature5 are computed for c/a ratios greater than that of MnBi and cannot satisfactorily be used to find the crystallographic angles of MnBi. A table of angles between the crystallographic planes (HK.L) and (hk.1) was calculated for MnBi from the formula0 F=are cos Hh+Kk+ 1/2(Hk+hK) + 3/4 (a/c)2Ll/v(H2 + K2 + HK + 3/4 (a/c)2L2) (h2+ k2+hk + 3/4 (a/c)2l2) on an IBM Type 650 Magnetic Drum Data Processing machine. The lattice constants used are listed in Table I and are those determined by Willis and Rooksby7 at 20°C. More recently published values obtained by both X-ray and neutron diffraction"' show no difference from these significant to the calculation. From the crystallographic angles between the basal plane (00.1) and the general plane (hk.1) in Table I, an (00.1) standard stereographic projection was made for MnBi which is shown in Fig. 1. "The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of ascorbic (C6H8O6) / oxalic (C2H2O4) acid as a reductant for the simultaneous recovery of zinc and manganese from a spent and mixed zinc-carbon and alkaline battery powder in sulphuric acid leaching. The effects of sulfuric acid concentration, ascorbic/oxalic acid dosages, reaction temperature and leaching time on the zinc and manganese dissolutions were investigated according to 2k full factorial experimental design; then, a simple optimization study was carried out for the best reductant. The optimum reductive acid leaching conditions were determined at 3 hours leaching time, 70°C leaching temperature, 0.5M sulfuric acid concentration, 13 g/L ascorbic acid dosage, 1/20 g/mL solid/liquid ratio and 200 rpm stirring speed. Under these conditions, the dissolution efficiencies were 99.9% for Zn and 99.3% for Mn. When our results were compared with the previous results, our findings were better than previous studies.In addition, the manganese dissolution kinetics was undertaken, and the activation energy was found to be 7.04 kJ/mol. Selective precipitations of Zn and Mn from acid solutions were carried out using NaOH and KOH. Using 3M NaOH as precipitating agent at room temperature and at pH 8; 95.4% of Zn and at pH 10; 93.7% of Mn were precipitated from the leaching solution. Under the same conditions, using 3 M KOH at pH 8; 91.6% of Zn and at pH 10, 96.4% of Mn were precipitated. Based on the experimental results obtained, an appropriate flow sheet was proposed to recover zinc and manganese."

While the Kansas River Tunnel is a relatively short, small diameter tunnel, the shaft excavation methods implemented were long and large on innovation and use of reverse circulation drilling equipment. ATS Drilling, L.P. used mechanical excavation techniques for both soil and rock segments of the 42.7 m (140 feet) and 38.1 m (125 feet) deep shafts that were 2.9 m (9.5 feet) and 4.1m (13.5 feet) diameter, respectively.

"Rare-earth transition-metal (R-TM) alloys show superior permanent magnetic properties in the bulk, but the synthesis and application ofR-TM nanoparticles remains a challenge due to the requirement of high-temperature annealing above about 800 °C for alloy formation and subsequent crystalline ordering. Here we report a single-step method to produce highly ordered R-TM nanoparticles such as YCO5 and SmCO5, without high-temperature thermal annealing by employing a cluster-deposition system, and we investigate their structural and magnetic properties. Nanoparticles of size = 10 nm are monodispersed (s /d ~ 0.15) and have Hc values at T = 300 K of 8.0 and 4.5 kOe for YC05 and SmC05, respectively. Alignment of the easy axes is performed via a field applied to the clusters before deposition. These processing steps are highly desirable to create and assemble R-TM nanoparticle composites for future permanentmagnet applications.IntroductionMagnetic nanoparticles with high magnetocrystalline anisotropies (Ki > 1 MJ/m3) are required for permanent-magnet, recording-media, and other significant applications [1-3]. In this regard, bulk rare-earth transition metal alloys (R-TM) especially RC05 (R = Y and Sm) crystallized in the hexagonal CaCu5-type structure have shown a large Ki = 5 MJ/m3 (YC05) and 22 MJ/m3 (SmCo5) along with an appreciable saturation-magnetic polarization (Js, > 10 kG) and high curie temperatures (Tc > 1000 K) [2]. The challenges in controlling the size, sizedistribution, phase purity and crystalline ordering, however, limit the research on RCo5 nanoparticles [4,5]. The conventional arc-melting technique requires high-temperature annealing for alloy formation and subsequent crystalline ordering, which causes excess growth and thus results in nanocrystalline powders of particles sizes larger than 30 nm [6, 7]. Low-temperature wet-chemical techniques yield SmC05 nanoparticles of sizes smaller than 20 nm [5], but the control of phase purity is challenging due to the presence of surfactants and formation of other secondary phases [8]."
