Simulation models were developed at the Julius kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre to provide accurate estimates of power consumption for a wide range of equipment. With the models, a range of circuits and operating conditions can be compared by simulation for a particular ore type. Accurate models of classification allow for the interaction between classifier efficiency and target product size (e.g., P80 or percent passing 150 /an) to be considered. This paper considers a range of circuit types and overall energy efficiency in the context of case studies where different circuit types were treating similar ore types.

Introduction Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55 % are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper's goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with Si02 between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with Si02 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2 from 0.8 to 0.95 during production. Experimental tests on pilot scale Thhis work began in January 1986 in the pilot plant (pot grate, Fig. 1) at Samarco. Its goal was to obtain preliminary data that would indicate the bybility of the project. It also formed a solid base to extend the studies in tests on an industrial scale of production for blast-furnace pellets. The pot grate is a test furnace composed of a gas burner, a combustion chamber and a grate, connected by hot air ducts. The burner is fed by a mixture of LPG and air. It reaches high temperatures through oxygen injection. The combustion chamber heats the air that comes from the turbocompressor. This hot air flows through the ducts to the grate on which the pellet samples are fired. During updraft drying, downdraft drying, preheating, firing and afterfiring, the upward and downward direction of the air flow can be controlled by valves driven by pneumatic cylinders. The pot grate indurator was fully automated in August 1989. Positive and negative pressures measurements resulting from gas passing through the pellet layer, as well as temperature readings, are recorded in graphs in relation to time for all tests. The tests depend on the various steps carried out in sequence that can influence the results of the tests. Therefore, some criteria were adopted to restrict the number of variables in the process. This was done to facilitate the results of the analysis. The pellets were composed of concentrate, bentonite, hydrated calcitic lime and metallurgical coal, all regularly used in the pellet plant. The material balance of the pellets mix was determined from the chemical analysis of the components. Table 1 shows the chemical characteristics of the concentrate and the additives used in the pilot plant and industrial tests. The basicity has a marked influence on the metallurgical properties of the pellets produced by Samarco with a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8%. However, for pellets with low silica (about 2%), it was necessary to study the variation in the parameters of quality in a wide range of basicities to deliniate with precision a scope of work. A large variety of low-silica blast-furnace pellets were produced at the pilot plant with binary basicity varying between 0.8 and 0.95. After chemical analysis, those pellets were separated into five groups of different binary basicity (0.8, 0.84, 0.87, 0.90 and 0.95). Each was then split, one part for metallurgical tests in the laboratory at Samarco and another to be evaluated in a laboratory for metallurgical tests in Germany. Minerals have many uses in paint systems. These roles include use as primary and extender pigments, sheen control, film durability enhancement, and rheology control. These and other uses of minerals in paints, and the effects of mineral quality variations on coatings performance are discussed. As coatings performance requirements become more demanding, tighter consistency of important mineral properties, such as particle size distribution and purity, is becoming increasingly vital. Future directions of mineral use to meet projected environmental restrictions and performance demands on coatings, including the use of advanced minerals technologies, are examined.

Phosphoric acid is a major raw material for the production of ammonium phosphate (AP) that is used as an intermediate in fertilizer production. Impurities within commercial grade wet process phosphoric acid are important in producing a fertilizer granule with good handling properties. The impurities identified as being important are; iron (III), aluminium and fluorine-containing compounds. Results show that the viscosity of the AP slurry produced increases by increasing the amount of impurity in the acid. Bench scale tests have been successfully replicated on a plant scale leading to a better understanding of the composition of impurity levels within phosphoric acid required to produce a high quality, free flowing, hard, spherical and non-caking granular fertilizer.

In the early 1960's the Company, then named the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company, was drilling the Continental ore body located near Fierro, New Mexico. Reserves of underground ore of sufficient quantity were indicated to build a mill. At the same time some ore from the Continental No. 1 mine was being milled at the Company's Bullfrog Mill, formerly a lead-zinc mill. The copper ore in comparison to the lead-zinc ores was very hard, abrasive, and heavy. These factors pointed out the possibility and attractiveness of autogenous grinding. While prior to this some study had been given to autogenous grinding, no large scale tests had been made. Such a program was carried out and from the pilot plant data the following was established: 1. Grinding of the ore by autogenous means could be accomplished. 2. This could be done in one stage; however, not at a satisfactory tonnage throughput rate. Thus, the use of a secondary unit has been employed. 3. Grinding in the secondary unit could be done by pebbles generated in the primary unit. This resulted in the scheme whereby the ore would be ground 100% autogenously. 4. Liberation of the copper minerals was excellent so that good recovery at a satisfactory concentrate grade would be obtainable.

Lack of visibility from large, open-pit haulage truck cabs has become a serious safety problem. Anaconda conducted a research program to develop a low cost system to alert haulage truck operators to small vehicles present in blind areas. Several systems were developed and tested. As open-pit haulage truck size has increased, so has the size of the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and cars are concealed within these blind areas and become safety hazards. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 136 t (150-ton) haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. In these "no visibility" areas many small vehicles have been crushed by large haulage trucks at various mine sites. In most instances, the occupants escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed. But injuries and death have occurred. In most cases, the accidents were attributed to negligence or carelessness by the small vehicle driver. The limited visibility problem still exists, though, and a solution is needed. Initial Solution The usual plane mirror on the driver's side and the convex mirror on the right front of the haulage truck allow only limited rear visibility. The typical, right side convex mirror is generally small and difficult to locate at a glance. This convex mirror also presents an image that distorts distance perception. These mirrors are of¬ten broken and immediate replacement not demanded or made. The US Bureau of Mines, in a contract with M.B. Associates, San Ramon, CA, developed an improved visibility system. It consisted of a larger, left view mirror and unique, blind area viewer. The large 230 x 690 mm (9 x 27 in.) left mirror has a small convex spot mirror near the bottom. The entire unit can be quickly replaced if broken. The large size provides a full view of driver orientation features such as the rear tire and the top of the load bed. The right 300 x 410 mm (12 x 16 in.) mirror has a convex surface and is quite rugged. The 510 mm (20 in.) spherical radius presents the operator with some distance distortion, but objects in its view are easily seen. The "blind area viewer" consists of a modified fresnel lens that allows the driver to "look around the corner." Installation of three of these lenses on the front of each haulage truck is rec¬ommended for adequate blind area coverage. This system significantly increases an operator's field of view and allows viewing of objects within about 3 m (9.8 ft of the truck. Many open-pit mines are nor mounting on smaller vehicles a long whip with a flag and lamp or both. This increases vehicle visibility to haulage truck operators. The whip is permanently attached to the mine vehicle. It can also be magnetically attached to transient vehicles. The whip system. though, is inadequate for visibility in the critical rear and right front blind areas. Alternate Solutions All of these visibility aids as¬sume an attentive driver. In addi¬tion, areas such as the rear blinc, area are not covered. Based on the inadequacy of existing visibility systems, Anaconda made a com mitment to further the truck de¬tection technology. The best ap¬proach was considered to be ar active system. It would notify the haulage truck operator that an en¬croaching vehicle is present. Sev¬eral systems were considered, in¬cluding ultrasonics and elec¬tromagnetics. For the ultrasonic system, com mercial and in-house design were looked at. Designing an( building transducers with the spe cific beam shape to match the haulage truck blind spots re¬quired a major technological breakthrough. False alarms ap¬peared difficult to prevent en¬tirely. They were caused by pass¬ing, trailing, or leading vehicles a., well as nonthreatening objects. Froth flotation was employed to beneficiate a lean-grade siliceous rock-phosphate ore containing fluorapatite, the phosphate-bearing mineral. The main gangue minerals were quartz, iron oxides and aluminum oxides. After the rougher stage, four cleaning stages were required to upgrade the ore. The liberation size of the phosphate mineral was below 200 mesh, The reagent scheme consisted of commercial-grade sodium silicate and sodium oleate. The effect of reagent dosages, number of cleaning stages and pulp density on the efficiences of separation were studied systematically. A flowsheet was proposed for the processing of low-grade siliceous phosphate ore containing 12.1% P2O5, 55.36% SiO2 and 15.45% CaO. The flowsheet provided a useable phosphate concentrate containing 34.18% P2O5 and 14.20% SiO2 with a P2O5 recovery of 70.4% (the weight yield was 25.0%).

The vat leaching operation at the Yerington Mine was started in October, 1953. The original plant facilities consisted of primary and secondary crushing, eight leaching vats, precipitation launders, sulfuric acid plant and the necessary maintenance, warehouse and administrative facilities. By 1961, 35,000,000 tons of oxide ore had been removed from the mine exposing the underlying sulfide ore body. A 5,000 ton per day concentrator was constructed and put into operation to treat the sulfide ore in November, 1961. The original crushing plants were used for both oxide and sulfide ores. By adding a third crushing shift for six days per week, the treated ore was increased from 12,000 to 17,000 tons per day. To balance the oxide and sulfide ore reserves, the concentrator was expanded to 13,500 tons per day in 1967. Again, no additional crushing facilities were added. It was anticipated that the treatment rate of oxide ore would be reduced from 12,000 to 9,000 tons per day. Instead, the addition of two crushing shifts per week, and improved operating procedures, increased the treated ore to 26,500 tons per day, 13,000 tons to the vat leaching and 13,500 tons to the concentrator.

"The objective of the study conducted by the authors is to determine what media size(s) addition will maximize any given plant ball mill’s grinding efficiency (Fig. 1). The functional performance parameters “mill grinding rate through the size of interest,” and “cumulative mill grinding rates” from both plant and smallscale tests are applied to this task. A plant media sizing methodology, and industrial case studies, are provided.BackgroundA previous article (“Ball mill classification system optimization through functional performance modeling,” Nov. 17, McIvor et al., 2017, Mining Engineering) described circuit classification system efficiency (CSE), equal to the percentage of coarse (plus circuit P80 target size) material in the ball mill. It can be measured and then increased through pump and cyclone adjustments. By so transferring the application of ball mill power from fine (minus P80 product size) to coarse material, circuit efficiency is increased and overgrinding is decreased.The other factor that determines overall circuit efficiency is how well the power that is applied to the coarse material grinds it. This is affected by design and operating variables like the media sizing and mill percent solids. From circuit functional performance (McIvor et al., 1990):Circuit production rate of new fine material (t/h) = Power applied to coarse material (kW) x Mill grinding rate of coarse material (t/kWh) (1)The power applied to coarse material is the total mill power multiplied by the CSE. Therefore:Circuit production rate of new fine material (t/h) = Total mill power (kW) x CSE (%) x Mill grinding rate of coarse material (t/kWh) (2) Production rate, mill power and CSE can be measured during a plant circuit survey. The mill grinding rate of coarse material is then calculated. At the circuit target P80 size, this is the mill grinding rate (of coarse material) through the size of interest. The objective is to maximize this rate. The mill grinding efficiency can also be calculated by taking the ratio of the mill grinding rate over the material’s grindability as measured in the lab. Mill percent solids optimization has thusly been achieved (McIvor et al., 2000). For media sizing, maximizing the mill grinding rate on a given ore is equivalent to maximizing the mill grinding efficiency. Ores of different grindability will be part of the discussion."

The Gatineau shaft described in this paper was an excavation of about 38 m diameter and 21 m depth constructed in Gatineau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River just north of Ottawa, Ontario. A large sewage lift pumping station-was to be constructed in this excavation. Subcontractor for the shaft excavation and initial support was Beaver Underground Structures Ltd., of Dorval, Quebec. Mr. William C. Cox of Beaver conceived the idea for the support system used in this excavation, and was responsible for the construction activities. Initial analysis and design concepts for the lining system were developed by Mr. Ronald E. Heuer. Detailed lining design and construction monitoring were the responsibility of Mr. Jean-Michel Loignon. Geologic conditions indicated by two borings within the shaft area are illustrated in Fig. 1. The shaft excavation would be in the sensitive Leda silty clay. The clay is of stiff to very stiff consistency, with an insitu vane shear strength averaging about 115 KPa (2400 psf) and a reported low value of about 87 KPa (1820 psf). Low strength values were from the middle of the clay layer, with higher strengths at the top and bottom. Average shear strength at the level of the base of the excavation was about 137 KPa (2860 psf). Remolded vane shear strength averaged about 20 KPa (420 psf), with a reported low of 13 KPa (270 psf). Based upon average strength values, the clay sensitivity is 5.8. The clay has an average water content of 53% (range 43 to 66%), which is near its liquid limit (average 56%). The clay unit weight is about 1760 kg/m3 (110 pcf). Underlying the shaft site at shallow depth is limestone bedrock within which the piezometric head is approximately equal to the original ground surface elevation. For shaft support, a -cast-in-place concrete wafer system was considered, but was discarded because of time restrictions imposed by concrete placement and curing. The Monterey Coal Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Carter Oil Company of Houston, Texas, recently awarded a contract to build the Monterey No. 1 Preparation Plant, which will be located near Carlinville, Illinois, to the McNally Pittsburg Manufacturing Corporation. The preparation plant will be one of the most modern jig preparation plants in the State of Illinois. Illinois No. 6 coal will be delivered by a 48" slope belt having 35-degree carrying idlers, operating at 650 FPM and operating on an incline of nearly 17 degrees. The slope belt is driven by two 450 BP motors and will deliver the mined coal at the rate of 1800 TPH to a stationary step-type ' screen having six-inch openings. The overproduct from the stationary screen will discharge into a 10' x 24' McNally Rotary Breaker and the underproduct will bypass the rotary breaker. The rotary breaker is equipped with heavy manganese screens with 6 ½" diameter openings. The sized 6" x 0 coal from the stationary step screen and the rotary breaker will be discharged by gravity to a 4%" raw coal incline storage belt. The 48" raw coal storage belt will deliver the 6" x 0 sized coal at the rate of 1800 T?H to an 8000 ton concrete raw coal silo, 70 feet in diameter and 1x7 feet high. The 6" x 0 sized coal will be drawn from the concrete storage silo by seven (7) 36" wide reciprocating plate feeders. Five feeders are to have constant speed drives at a rated capacity of 145 TPH each. Two (2) feeders will have remote con- trolled variable speed drives, to provide a varying feed.

Although gold's market price dropped considerably from 1980's all time high, exploration for the precious metal remained a particularly bright spot last year, especially in the western US. For example, in Nevada-the nation's largest gold producer-further exploratory drilling at Louisiana Land & Explorations Co.'s deposit at Round Mountain and Newmont Mining Corp.'s find near Carlin resulted in sharp boosts in estimated reserves at both sites. Louisiana Land said its deposit is well on the way to being one of the largest gold reserves in the US. Based on further drilling, Newmont said its Gold Quarry property near Carlin could now produce 4.7-6.2 t/a (150,000-200,000 oz/ year). Reserves at Newmont's two properties near Carlin and a third property in southeast California are reportedly at least 218 t (7 million oz), up from the previously announced 128 t (4.1 million oz). Gold exploration activities were brisk in many other states, including a noticeable effort to explore and reopen dormant properties. Although the return on investments didn't appear as favorable last year as they did in 1980, the gold price was apparently sufficient to spur healthy exploration activity. Outside precious metals, market conditions, and subsequent exploration activity, appeared much more bleak. In the molybdenum market, for example, prices continued to slide, and Amax Inc. tightened its exploration budget. (Amax supplies 60% of the domestic market and 45% of the world demand for molybdenum.) The company spent 16% less on exploration during the first six months in 1981, compared to the same period in 1980. Copper and many other base metal producers appeared in similar straits throughout the year. Uranium exploration activities continued to suffer last year also due to depressed market conditions. Among others, Gulf Minerals Resources and Amoco Minerals Co. suspended uranium exploration activities in the West. Despite current unfavorable conditions, some companies continue uranium searches, confident that market conditions will rebound. On a brighter note, interest in exploring for some industrial and strategic minerals appeared on the upswing last year. Minerals used for oil and gas drilling, such as barite and special sands, were especially noteworthy. In geophysical activity, significant developments were achieved for electromagnetic techniques in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Geophysical logging activity declined due to decreased uranium exploration, and computer hardware continued to impact the way mining geophysical data are being acquired. Many presentations and papers were given last year to help exploration geochemists develop new techniques to locate concealed ore bodies. Among techniques described were statistical and computer modeling for enhancing anomalies over blind deposits.

Until about three years ago, Asarco's copper business consisted predomi¬nantly of custom smelting of ores and concentrates produced by other mining companies. Since then, the company has been transforming itself into a fully integrated producer in copper mining, smelting, and refining. In doing this, Asarco has lowered its costs and restructured its operations and finances. Now, Asarco hopes to complete this process by spending $260 million over the next three years, to expand and modernize its copper facilities and boost production by some 40%. The capital spending program includes: • $130 million at the Ray mine about 113 km (70 miles) north of Tucson, AZ, to expand mining capacity and install an in-pit ore crusher, mill, and concentrator; • $100 million, to expand the mining capacity at the Mission Complex located south of Tucson, AZ, and refurbish the adjacent, idle Pima mill and concentrator. (Asarco had earlier exercised an option to purchase the Pima mill for about $6 million); and • $30 million, to modernize the copper smelter in El Paso, TX, with a new flash smelting process. The new program is in addition to a recently completed first-phase expansion of the Mission mine, mill, and concentrator. This $13 million debottlenecking of existing operations in¬creased production capacity by 46% or 24.5 kt/a (27,000 stpy), to 79 kt/a (87,000 stpy) of copper in concentrates. In addition, a previously an¬nounced $12 million expansion program at the Ray mine is scheduled for completion in early 1990. It will expand mill capacity, to offset the anticipated effects of increasing ore hardness as the pit deepens. Ray produces 68 kt/a (75,000 stpy) of copper in concen¬trates and an additional 36 kt/a (40,000 stpy) of electrowon copper. By 1992, when Asarco's expanded and modernized copper facilities are operating at capacity, the company's mine output will have increased by 67 kt/a (74,000 stpy), to 263 kt/a (290,000 stpy) of contained copper. That will be enough to provide all of the feed required for Asarco's two copper smelters - by then, both of them modern, state-of-the-art facilities. Asarco's expansion and modernization program will further reduce costs and provide added assurance that the company's copper business will be profitable at the bottom of the cycle, according to Chairman Richard de J. Osborne The Ray mine portion of the new program will include construction at the mine of a new mill and concentrator, with a capacity of 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd) of ore. These new semiautogenous grinding mills and large capacity flotation cells will augment the present 27.2 kt/d (30,000 stpd) concentrator located 29 km (18 miles) away, in Hayden, AZ. A 29 km (18 mile) pipeline will be built to carry tailings in slurry form from the new Ray mill to the present tailings pond. Concentrates from the new facility will be shipped by rail to Asarco's Hayden copper smelter. Ray's present 27.2 kt/d (30,000 stpd) crusher, adjacent to the open-pit, will be replaced by a 54.4 kt/d (60,000 stpd), portable in-pit crusher and conveying system. This will reduce the more expensive ore haulage by truck. The Ray project is scheduled for completion by 1992. It will increase the mine's annual output of copper in concentrates by an additional 33.5 kt/a (37,000 st), to 102 kt (112,000 st). And the project could mean an additional 400 jobs at the 730 employee Ray operation. Work at the Mission Complex involves reactivation of the Pima mill and concentrator and expansion of mine output sufficient to provide ore to both the Pima mill and the present Mission mill. This article reviews the production trends of industrial minerals since 2000 for Texas, the leading U.S. producing state of industrial minerals with a total value of $5.2 billion in 2017, equivalent to 6.9 percent of all U.S. minerals value. Most current Texas industrial-mineral value comes from the production of cement, crushed stone, industrial sand, and construction sand and gravel. Construction material consumption is concentrated in the 25 metropolitan areas of the state, with production of industrial minerals in nearby counties. With Texas’ population projected to reach 50 million by 2050, continuing in-state development and production of industrial minerals will be required to meet in-state and regional demand. Texas’ most rapidly growing production of industrial minerals is industrial sand to supply proppants for multiple unconventional petroleum plays. Texas’ favorable geology and economic factors provide opportunities for the identification and development of new industrial-mineral production sites. Repurposing of former industrial-mineral production sites for post-production development likely will increase as efficient land use evolves. Understanding the geologic, economic and societal framework of industrial-mineral resources will facilitate more informed decisions about the complex issues that the region will face, including effects of sea-level rise on coastal infrastructure.

"Refuge alternatives (RAs) are required in underground coal mines to support life post-disaster. RAs are mandated by MSHA to maintain an apparent temperature (AT) at or below 95°F (35°C) while providing a safe and livable shelter for a minimum of 96 hours. Because strata composition and mine temperatures will affect the final AT within an occupied RA, NIOSH researchers have collaborated with five underground coal mines across the US to characterize the effects of geographic location and seasonal temperature fluctuations on mine air temperature, relative humidity, and mine strata temperatures. The data collected indicates that some mines will experience greater temperature fluctuations than others, based on geographic location. The mine which demonstrated the greatest temperature differential over the course of the year resulted in a mine air temperature that ranged from 53.4°F (11.9°C) to 84.2°F (29.0°C) and a rib surface temperature that ranged from 55.4°F (13.0°C) to 82.8°F (28.2°C). This data suggests that the location and seasonal peak temperature can significantly affect the mine strata temperature, which could lead to a fully occupied RA exceeding the 95°F (35°C) AT limit over the course of 96 hours. The data reported in this paper could be used to examine the heat buildup inside an RA for actual mine conditions. Thermal simulations could be implemented to evaluate maximum occupancy ratings based on actual mine temperatures and strata compositions. INTRODUCTION In the event of a mine disaster, miners’ primary focus is to escape. Should their attempt be futile, they can enter a refuge alternative (RA) to await rescue. In 2008, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandated that underground coal mines implement RAs within 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of the working face and spaced within one-hour travel distances in outby areas where persons work such that persons in outby areas are never more than than a 30-minute travel distance from an RA or safe exit. These RAs are required to provide a safe and habitable shelter for a minimum of 96 hours and to prevent the apparent temperature (AT) from exceeding 95°F (35°C) [1]. There is concern throughout the industry that in some cases the internal ambient of occupied RAs may exceed the 95°F (35°C) AT limit due to the potentially hot mine atmosphere as well as the metabolic heat generated by RA occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted tests in its Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) and its Experimental Mine (EM) to investigate heat buildup in RAs. It was found that the number of occupants in an RA may need to be reduced based on the ambient mine temperature, which varies from mine to mine [2]. Further testing and analyses were completed to evaluate the mechanisms (conduction, convection, radiation) by which heat is transferred from an RA to the mine surroundings. Additionally, the effects of varying mine strata compositions on the heat buildup inside an RA were studied [3]. The mine strata temperatures will increase due to heat transfer from within an RA. Depending on the mine strata composition, some mines may be more thermally conductive than others. For example, sandstone is much more conductive than shale or coal (i.e. it disippates heat at a quicker rate). All things being equal, the air temperature inside of an RA after 96 hours will be higher for a mine with strata that has low thermal conductivity compared to a mine with high thermal conductivity."

Various techniques used in the removal of metal ions from effluent streams have been reviewed. These techniques include recovery of metals by biological treatment, chelating agents, adsorption, ion- exchange and chemical precipitation. The main thrust of this paper however, is concerned with the removal of cadmium and zinc ions from the solution by adsorption utilizing liquid fluidized beds. The bed particles used were silica of 150x200 mesh. The range of the concentration of these ions studied was 10-3 to 10-5 M. Important variables examined included flow rate, concentration of metal ions and amount of bed particles. A mathematical model describing the concentration profile of metal ions in the axial direction in liquid fluidized beds has been developed. The equation of continuity was solved numerically and the results were used to predict the recovery of metal ions in fluidized beds.

Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource and serves as the primary fuel for the U.S. electric-power industry. However, its continued and expanded use is often challenged by the nature and amount of its associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, and trace elements. The moderate- to high-sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern today as potentially more stringent regulations requiring further reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions are being considered. The most prevalent method currently employed to control SO2 emissions from coal-burning facilities is post-combustion flue-gas desulfurization. However, physical coal cleaning (a.k.a. beneficiation, preparation) methods can also be effective in removing sulfur and ash impurities from coal prior to combustion. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about 50-mm (2-inch) topsize, and then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine size fractions. Crushing liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including the portion of inorganic sulfur (pyritic) not chemically bound to the coal matrix. The percentage of impurities liberated generally increases as the coal particle size is reduced. Coarse- and intermediate-sized coal particles are typically subjected to specific gravity-based cleaning methods, while fine-sized (less than 0.5-mm) coal particles are beneficiated using froth flotation, a technique based on surface property differences. Greater cleaning potential exists at finer sizes because of increased liberation of impurities, but this potential is not fully realized because of inefficiencies associated with fine particle separation using state-of-the-art coal cleaning technologies.

This semantically ambiguous title purports to describe an examination of the question of automation and its effect on the industrial worker. More explicit titles might be "Painless Automation" or "Mechanization without a Sting" or, if I may steal a few phrases from the title of a recent interview Pith John L. Lewis, "More Machines, Fewer Men -- Is the Union Happy About It?" Automation has become the biggest ?scare word? for many industrial workers and their unions since "wage stabilization.? "To many a union orator," reports TIME of January 4, "automation is the sinister business of eliminating jobs." TIME might better have phrased this description by saying that many unions regard automation as the attempt to eliminate not jobs, but workers, The recent steel dispute was hung up for so long primarily because of the problems evolved of increased job efficiency through automation and job changes. Everywhere today there is heard the cry of our need for maintaining full employment within the context of an expanding economy echoing against the sheer reality of automation's displacement of thousands of workers through a rapid acceleration of productivity.

Atkinson's resistance square law is the cornerstone equation for traditional expression of energy losses in mine ventilation engineering. But the nomenclature for the various forms of energy losses are often confused for one another, misapplied or misinterpreted. These forms of energy were re-examined from thermodynamic and fluid-dynamic perspectives. Resultant expressions showed that both incompressible and compressible flow regimes in underground mines can easily be accommodated. Given the well-known three major energy forms, which are equivalent to one another but numerically unequal, corresponding equations to Atkinson's (pressure loss) for headloss and workloss were derived. The thermodynamic weight relational resistance ([w] s2/m5) associated with energy per unit weight (headloss) was dimensionalized for the first time. Also, normalized Atkinson-like equations for headlosses and worklosses were derived to ease direct computations in mine ventilation practice.

Coal-derived flue gases contain CO2/SO2 and these contaminants preferably have to be captured by cheap sorbents. This remediation approach is from the standpoint of addressing issues such as global warming, acid rain and development of Advanced Power Generation Systems and to realize the economic gain as well. Conventional and existing dry scrubbing technologies use regenerable sorbents which are pollutant specific and require expensive stabilizers in order to attain versatility. This paper discusses the use a novel class of sorbents prepared from the heavy metal contaminated Berkeley Pit water (Butte, Montana) by a proprietary process developed at The University of Nevada, Reno. These sorbents are activated mixed spinel ferrite (MxFe,_X04)' Preliminary experimental results show that the sorbents have good desulfurization and CO2 decomposition capacities. The decomposition effectiveness of these mixed spinel ferrites was studied at 300°C and compared against the synthetic magnetite obtained from ferrous sulfate solution in our laboratory. The results indicated that the mixed spinel ferrite had good affinity for the adsorption and decomposition. The CO2 decomposition data of both sorbents fitted the first order reaction kinetics. Even though the surface area of the magnetite was higher than that of mixed spinel ferrite, the CO2 decomposition rate of the mixed spinel ferrite was estimated to be 2.5 times higher than that of magnetite under identical conditions. The carbon analysis deposited on the sample indicated that the CO2 was 100% decomposed into carbon and other carbon! hydrogen compounds by the mixed spinel ferrite whereas the conversion was 43% by the magnetite. In terms of specific adsorption of carbon, ferrite was 3-5 times more efficient than magnetite.
