A NIOSH study on occupational deaths between 1980 and 1989 indicated that in the United States, mining had the highest average annual fatality rate (3 1.9 per 100,000 workers) of any other major industry. Since "lack of training" was often cited as the primary cause of accidents, NIOSH has been investigating new methods for effective training. One such method is the use of low- cost, desktop computers to simulate a virtual mining environment. Computer-based training offers several advantages over conventional training because the computer programs provide a three- dimensional environment that allows the trainee to practice using evacuation routes, encounter mining hazards, and view mining operations without being exposed to any real danger. One major focus of the project is mine escapeway multiuser training using desktop virtual reality programs. Researchers have imported mine maps into the software for the purpose of practicing actual evacuation routes and procedures. Various scenarios for evacuation can be practiced in a three-dimensional computer simulation of the mine in a disaster situation, complete with smoke, fire, and other dangers. Depending on the trainee's job description (i.e., foreman, shift boss, beltman, etc.), certain tasks need to be performed in addition to navigating primary and/or secondary escape routes. Each scenario allows for individual or team-based training and provides a means to educate mine workers in hazard recognition and hazard avoidance. Using this program, mine workers can practice evacuating various mine layouts without the danger and expense associated with escapeway training in an actual underground mine. Each scenario can be changed to test the trainee's reaction in a variety of circumstances and run many times so the trainee can practice concepts. This training experience will help reinforce the knowledge acquired during more conventional classroom instruction, and the inherent flexibility of the program allows training materials to be tailored to meet the specific requirements of individual mines.

Eminent Domain is the power of the government or municipality to take property for public use without the consent or acceptance of the owner. Typically the agency taking the property will make an offer on the property, hoping that the owner will immediately accept and allow work to begin. If a mutual resolution regarding the property value cannot be reached, however, the municipality will condemn the premises and institute a condemnation action in a court of law, which is when the problems begin. The power of the government to take the subject property is limited by the Federal and State constitutional duty to pay "just compensation" for the property.

In 1962 a computerized data processing system was first installed and programmed for the grading of direct-shipping iron ore from the Sept-Iles terminal of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. Over the years several changes and improvements have been incorporated into this system. It is the purpose of this paper to describe its present operation and features. Sept-Iles is located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, 500 miles north east of Montreal. The direct-shipping ore is received by railroad from Schefferville, 320 miles to the north in the Knob Lake Iron Range of New Quebec and Labrador. The shipping season extends from mid-March to December. The maximum tonnage handled in this period being 13,045,000 long tons in 1959. Crude ore receipts for 1974 amounted to 6,568,000 tons of direct-shipping and 4,700,000 tons of plant feed material from Schefferville. This was augmented by 4,447,000 tons of concentrate and 7,572,000 tons of pellets from Labrador City 200 miles north of Sept-Iles. The direct-shipping ore has come from as many as ten mines, and grade variations, even-within the same mines, have been sufficient to require blending for uniform, acceptable cargos. Shipments of low phosphorous, non bessemer and manganiforous iron ore are made, to Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan with grade variations to meet customers requirements.

The Subtropolis Mine is a room-and-pillar mine extracting the Vanport Limestone near Petersburg, OH. In February 2018, mine management began implementing a new mine layout to better control the negative effects of excessive levels of horizontal stress. Almost immediately, the conditions in the headings improved. Conversely, and as expected, stress-related damage was concentrated within crosscuts. Over the last 18 months, the mine operator has diligently experimented with different techniques/methods to lessen the impact of the instabilities in the outby crosscuts. The range of controls used by the mine operator include angled crosscuts, crosscut offsets, increased distance between crosscuts, arched crosscuts, cable-bolted crosscuts, altered blasting pattern, and windows. A window is used to resist roof deformation by leaving a strong brow of roof rock within the crosscuts.

Over the past five years, the two-fold growth in Canada's coal industry "Figure, 1" results primarily from the coking coal market to Japan and, to a lesser degree, by the increasing use of sub-bituminous and lignite coal for power generation in the Prairie Provinces. This expansion will continue, but production of coal for domestic thermal generation of electricity will grow at a faster rate than coking coal exports "Figure, 2". Half of the 20 million tons of thermal coal used for electrical power generation in Canada during 1974 were imported by Ontario Hydro from U.S. coal companies in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Ontario Hydro's Nanticoke station on Lake Erie which will consume 7.5 million tons of coal in 1977 when fully operative, as well as other future planned projects, could cause Ontario Hydro's coal consumption to rise from 10 million tons today to 20 to 25 million tons by 1985

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated leaching of chalcopyrite with sulfuric acid-oxygen under conditions anticipated during in situ leaching. A central composite experimental design was chosen to study oxygen pressures of 150, 300, and 450 psi, leach temperatures of 35?, 65°, and 95° C, oxygen-to-chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5, leach times of 8, 16, and 24 hours, initial acid strengths of 0.6, 1.2, and 1.8 g H2SO4/g chalcopyrite and pyrite to chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0, 1, and 2. The leaching kinetics were consistent with the shrinking core model. A quadratic response surface model was used to determine linear and interaction effects of the design factors on rate constants from Arrhenius correlations.

Development of a process for winning copper from pelletized chalcocite concentrate without matte smelting and converting is underway at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center, Bureau of Mines. The new route from concentrate to metal includes 2-stage fluid-bed treatment; pelletized concentrate (33 percent Cu, 7 percent S) is first desulfurized (to about 0.5 percent S) in an oxidizing atmosphere, and in the second stage the calcine is metallized by reduction with hydrogen. Thereafter, the reduced product plus 10 percent CaO is routed to a smelting furnace to separate metallic copper from the gangue. Recovery and the Cu content of the product at this point are in the 97-98 percent range. The metal must be refined to remove sulfur and iron to make wirebar copper. An important feature of the process is the pelletizing of the fine concentrate into mini-pellets prior to fluid-bed treatment, which has permitted shorter reaction time, decreased dusting, and facilitated subsequent processing.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the leaching of phosphate values from Florida phosphatic clay wastes using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the leaching agent and methanol as the solvent. Acid-alcohol leaching studies were done using research-grade apatite to investigate potential causes of flow extractions. It was found that a barrier layer formed on the surface of the apatite. Initial discovery of the barrier layer was made by analyzing pure apatite samples before and after leaching using an optical microscope. Subsequent Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analyses proved the coating was calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4•1/2H2O) and that unreacted apatite existed beneath the coating. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs depict the CaSO4• 1 /2H20 morphology as long slender crystals adhering to the apatite surface. It was also shown that grinding the leached tailings and leaching again in the H2SO4-methanol system resulted in additional phosphate extraction.

Metallurgical processing of gold ores in positive water balance environments has been facing decreasing discharge concentrations in permits and additional requirements to pass acute toxicity testing before discharges will be allowed to native fisheries. In response to the challenge to meet 0.005 mg/L free cyanide guidance for discharges to fresh water fisheries, the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) International Cyanide Task Group has undertaken an interlaboratory study for the free cyanide method in the metallurgical processing cyanide detoxified reverse osmosis effluent to determine if the quantitation limit for the method could be lowered from the current 0.009 mg/L free cyanide (1) to less than the 0.005 mg/L guidance concentration. Results of the testing are presented below.

"INTRODUCTION The so called Porto Maravilha Project consists of the re-urbanization of a 500 ha area in the Rio de Janeiro port region. Several changes in local infrastructure are being implemented, including a significant change in the road system, with the demolition of the former “Via Perimetral” viaduct and construction of 4 new tunnels: • Saúde tunnel - 35 m long (Waimberg et al, 2014); • “Binária tunnel” - 1012 m long; • “Via Expressa” twin tunnels - 1850 m long each way. The tunnels were excavated almost completely in rock using conventional drill and blast methodology and only some short stretches in weathered rock, associated to faults zones, residual soils and marine sediments close to the tunnel portals. During excavation of access shaft and “Via Expressa” and “Binária” tunnels significant ground settlements as well as settlements of buildings founded both on shallow and deep foundations were measured. These values could not be associated to conventional tunneling induced settlement troughs. This paper focuses on the “Via Expressa” tunnels, presenting a brief description of the project as a whole, its geological and geotechnical background, monitoring results, and a discussion of possible causes of the measured settlements. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Porto Maravilha Project is an integrated multidisciplinary action on behalf of the Rio de Janeiro city council with support from the State and Federal Governments. In addition to creating new conditions for working, housing, transport, culture and leisure for the resident population, it also promotes expressive economic development in the region (Portonovo, 2015). Porto Maravilha Project is carrying out actions for the recovery of the region’s historical heritage, as well as promoting the population´s social and economic development. One of the main benefits of the Porto Maravilha Project is the construction of the new traffic system in the port area, consisting of the Express and Binário roadways. The new project, which will replace the current Perimetral Rodrigues Alves viaduct system, will increase traffic flow capacity by 27%."

SUMMARY In August 1986, TRANSMANCHE LINK, a joint venture comprising the 10 companies who initially promoted the project, signed a contract with EUROTUNNEL for the design, construction and commissioning of the TRANSMANCHE fixed link for an amount of 4,5 billion dollars. On the French side, the work consists of digging three, 19km. long tunnels, of which almost 16 kms. are under the sea, up to the meeting point with the Tunnel works carried out by the British.. The tunnels are bored through chalk by 5 tunnelling machines, starting from one intermediate point at Sangatte near the coast: - Landward, they are drilled trough permeable strata of white and grey chalk. - Seaward, mainly through relatively impermeable chalk marl, but with the presence of water in faulted zones, or in grey chalk.

The permeability and flow capacity in unsaturated media is investigated by the Bureau of Mines for application to in situ copper leach mining at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine site. Moisture retention properties are derived and combined with scanning electron microprobe data to characterize the mineralogy, texture, pore size, distribution, and permeability of the host rock. Finite element modeling is used to derive a saturated permeability, ambient degree of saturation, and assess various injection-recovery schemes. Recommended design modifications for optimization of solution distribution and maximum recovery from the rock matrix requires either (1) the injection pressures on the order of 1500 psi and recovery wells operating in a suction mode, or (2) performing permeability enhancement, through rubblization. By producing a maximum block diameter of 4 m, injection pressures can be reduced to 500 psi with improved recovery and containment of solutions.

In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. The mine and mill are situated between 2.2 and 2.6 km (7,217 and 8,530 ft) in elevation. The project is located in an isolated area. Potassium, is one of the three basic plant nutrients along with nitrogen and phosphorus. There is no substitute for potassium compounds in agriculture; they are essential to maintain and expand food production. Potash is found throughout the world in both soluble and insoluble forms. It is only the soluble forms that are economically attractive to process, primarily chlorides and sulfates, with potassium chloride by far the most important potash salt. Sylvinite ore, a mechanical mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), is a natural mineral of potassium. This ore is found in commercial quantities in the Permian sin region near Carlsbad, New Mexico. Vast tonnages of high-grade de, low-clay-content ores have been mined and concentrated during the past 40 years; however, these deposits are rapidly being depleted leaving high-clay, low-grade ore reserves of over 135 million tons. These ores, containing 13 to 22 percent K20 and 3 to 8 percent clay slimes; cannot be effectively processed by current commercial flotation methods. The present concentration processes for potash minerals in Carlsbad relate mainly to ores containing 1 percent or less of clay-slimes with a K20 content of 20 to 25 percent to yield products to meet the requirements of the agriculture market, namely, 95 percent KC1 equivalent to 60 percent K20. Discoveries of potash ore in Saskatchewan, Canada, have shifted the emphasis on expansion outside the United States. Presently, the American companies are looking to Canada for future growth, expenditures, and expansion. Four of the seven companies operating near Carlsbad are produces of Canadian potash despite the large investment sons required for shaft sinking and milling installations.

The Plant. The annual production of the Pyhasalmi mine is 900 000 tons of copper- zinc-pyrite ore containing approximately 0.7 % Cu, 2.5 % Zn and 30 % S. During 1976...1981 altered surface ore, 850 000 tons in all, was also treated at the concentrator. The surface ore was crushed and ground in a separate plant and was then fed into the copper or zinc flotation or was flotated in its own circuit, depending on the degree of alteration and the content of copper and zinc in the ore. The surface ore was exhausted in October 1981. Flotation comprises three consecutive flotation circuits; copper, zinc and pyrite circuit. The zinc circuit includes an open circuit roughing and scavenging. The scavenger concentrate and cleaner tailing are pumped to the middlings flotation. Rougher concentrates of the open circuit and the middlings flotation are pumped to cleaning which includes four stages. Figure 1 describes the flowsheet of the zinc circuit.

Throughout the 1980's the tem Mine-Wide Monitoring System has had various meanings for manufacturers of these systems and underground mine operators alike. System suppliers had visions of grandeur in the early 80's as they envisioned each mine, that has more than a single section, installing a computer based monitoring system to provide surveillance, control and documentation of the entire mining operation, including everything from a single heat detector to the weekly payroll. In a few cases this may have become reality but the truth is these systems have quietly become a steady but unspectacular workbase for the modern mining industry of the 1990's. As it exists today the total market for underground monitoring systems may not exceed $10 million annually. Suppliers have lowered their expectations of the dollar value of this particular market. Some were entering a new market because of experience with computer based data acquisition systems. Others had been active in the mining industry for years with more traditional equipment (communication systems, methane monitors, safety equipment, etc.) and decided to become involved with Mine-Wide Monitoring Systems.

Volcanogenic base metal ores contain about 0.5 to 7 g/T Au, commonly as an intermetallic compound with Ag and/or Hg, and to a small extent • "invisible gold" in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Au-bearing phase (electrum, Au-Ag-Hg alloy, etc.) generally occurs as fracture fillings in pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, and rarely • minute inclusions in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Au-bearing phase in fractures generally occurs • small grains, and is frequently associated with galena, tetrahedrite and other late minerals. The gold is readily liberated from fractures and recovered by flotation in Ca concentrates. Copper concentrates usually recover around 60% of the gold when the ore grade is around 3 g/t. Higher recoveries are obtained for higher ore grades, and lower recoveries for lower grade ores. Lead and zinc circuits act as scavengers for gold, and recover all the exposed gold attached to small particles. Only unliberated gold, "invisible gold" and very minute gold grains attached to large particles are lost to tailings.

Despite a recession that's crippling many US industries, and a UMW strike that wasn't supposed to happen, 1981 was a fairly good year for the coal industry. The big news was record-high exports. Queues of colliers waited for weeks at Hampton Roads, VA, and Baltimore, MD, to load coal destined for Europe and the Far East. Private industry and city governments began scrambling for a share of the export boom, and port developments were planned in nearly every coastal state. Coal exports jumped from about 82 Mt (90 million st) in 1980 to a record 83 Mt (92 million st) in 1981, according to the National Coal Association. NCA projects exports to remain at this level 1982. The following statistics illustrate industry performance in other areas: • Demand by domestic utilities and overseas customers was so strong that total US consumption reached 760 Mt (838 million st) in 1981. DOE predicts another record year in 1982, with consumption forecast at 804 Mt (886 million st). • 1981 production of 730 Mt (805 million st) was just slightly below the record high of 748 Mt (824 million st) in 1980, "a remarkable figure considering that UMW production was shut off for 72 days during 1981," says NCA President Carl Bagge. Production in 1982 should set a new record, 800 Mt (880 million st). • Eastern coal production fell 7.4%, while western production-largely unaffected by the UMW strike-rose almost 10%. NCA says eastern output will rise almost 12% to 538 Mt (593 million st) in 1982, and western production will increase by 6.6% to 266 Mt (293 million st). • Production per manhour is improving. After the strike, weekly production hit the 16 Mt (18 million st) mark and has approached the 18 Mt (20 million st) per week level. •Coal's share of the US electric generation market increased from 51% in 1980 to 53% in 1981. Electric utilities are coal's biggest customer, and their financial situation is precarious. Inflation has thwarted necessary expansion plans, while shifting environmental regulations have played havoc with construction costs. Utilities increased power sales by only 2.5% in 1981; NCA predicts that utility coal use will increase 4% in 1982. The Association's long-range forecast indicates that growth in electricity demand in the immediate future will be much lower than in the 1960s and 70s. Administration Impact Industry optimism following the election of Ronald Reagan and a Republican-dominated Senate didn't survive the year. One bright spot was the appointment of James Watt as Interior Secretary, and his promises to review surface mining regulations and resume leasing. The administration, however, has declined to support federal eminent domain for slurry pipelines and expects port users to foot most of the bill for expansions and improvements. The reforestation potential of bauxite mining spoils by seeding was examined on this research work. The experimental plot was established on the location Strofi Koukouvista 5, Ghiona Mountain. The experiment consists of 3 species (Pinus nigra, Robinia pseudoacacia, and Spartium junceum) with 4 sowing treatments and 2 sowing seasons (autumn and spring). The treatments were: (1) broadcasting; (2) broadcasting and soil cultivation; (3) broadcasting with straw mulching and straw binding with asphalt emulsion; (4) broadcasting with soil cultivation, straw mulching and straw binding with asphalt emulsion. Third year results show that spring is better than autumn as a sowing season. Only the Spartium junceum species were found to germinate and survive in autumn. The results are better for all the species on the spring seeding. The most effective treatments for Robinia pseudoacacia and Pinus nigra are 3 and 4 while for the Spartium junceum even simple broadcasting shows good results although the best ones are achieved with treatments 2, 3 and 4. The paper?s findings show that reforestation by sowing could be effective for some species but further experimentation with other species is recommended. Concerning Robinia pseudoacacia, testing of different seed preparation treatments is needed in order to maximize the germination of seeds.

Refractory gold ore pretreatment processes continue to receive much attention. This paper compares the relative economics of treating ores by oxygen pressure oxidation, roasting and bacterial oxidation with or without preconcentration by froth flotation. Capital and operating cost estimates for each method of pretreatment were prepared and these estimated costs and ore sulfide grades then are used to compare the process economics. The study indicates that the most significant item affecting the economics is the amenability of the ore to flotation. The cost benefits of flotation are $10-13 per tonne ore processed (2%-4% s=, 10:1 ratio of concentration). In most cases bacterial oxidation has the lowest overall cost, especially if less than complete oxidation of the sulfides will give acceptable recovery, however bacterial oxidation has yet to be practiced on a large scale. In all situations pressure oxidation shows the highest cost. However, the cost differences between the treatments are small, less than $7 per tonne.
