This paper examines the application of gelatin mixture models to the study of factors such as gravity effects, tectonic and residual stresses, anisotropy, physical nonlinearity, time-dependent behavior of the rock mass and connectedness of the geologic space. The calibration technique of gelatin mixtures, proposed by Richards and Mark in 1966, is applied to the particular problem considered. Similitude relationships between model and prototype are discussed with reference to the constitutive equations describing the physical behavior of the rock mass. The interaction between two openings in a linearly elastic medium, under conditions of plane strain, is used as an illustrative example, with the view of describing the history of stress and deformation changes on the rock medium and lining around a slusher drift while undercuts are made in block caving.

"With up to 2,300 m (7,545 ft) of rock on top of it, the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which is scheduled to go into regular operation in December 2016 in the Swiss Alps, is not only the world’s longest, but also the deepest railway tunnel ever built. Accordingly, the temperatures in the tunnel are very high, with the surrounding rock expected to reach 45° C (113° F) once the tunnel is fully operational. Since unrestricted rail operations are only permitted in temperatures of 40° C (104° F) or less, the heat has to be controlled with suitable equipment. Large fans developed and built especially for this application by TLT-Turbo GmbH provide fresh air for regular operations as well as during maintenance and repair work. Separate fans ensure that the emergency exits are properly ventilated in case of fire. In addition to coming up with a technical solution that could handle the special challenges of this project, the engineers and planners had to develop detailed preliminary plans as well as a sophisticated logistics and installation concept.The Gotthard Base Tunnel consists of two 57-km (35-mile) long tubes, one in each direction. Including all connecting and access tunnels, the entire underground system measures 152 km (95 miles). At Faido and Sedrun, at approximately 16 and 36 km (9 and 23 miles) respectively, two multifunction stations were built that cut each of the two tubes into three sections of roughly equal length. Here, trains can make emergency stops and change tracks, if necessary. This is also where eight large axial fans made by TLT were installed that exchange the air, i.e. they extract a certain amount of heated air and inject the same amount of cool fresh air a few hundred meters further down the train tracks. In addition to the four exhaust and four supply fans, 24 so-called jet fans were installed along with associated components like silencers, shut-off dampers, drives and lubrication systems from TLT.In addition to exchanging the air, these fans are used to enable maintenance and repair operations in the tunnel. Current plans call for blocking each tunnel tube for one night per week in order to perform preventive maintenance work, thus enhancing the tunnel’s overall functionality and availability. During these hours, many people will be in the tunnel who require fresh air. “One of the major criteria for winning this bid was the fans’ ability to quickly switch between a wide-range of modes. TLT fans are among the best in the world in this regard,” said Andreas Kuhn, TLT’s project manager for the Gotthard Base Tunnel, about the selection of his company’s fans for this project."

From the Brightwater Conveyance System in Seattle to the Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel in Vancouver, BC, the design and construction of deep-lying tunnels in the Pacific Northwest often require the incorporation of deep portal shafts. Alluvium overlying marine and glacial deposits combined with the high regional seismicity is the common geologic setting. The latest example illustrating the development of shaft design for this scenario is the 40-m-deep shafts of the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant New Outfall System. The main components of the shafts include the initial lining, providing the excavation support system to be used for launching and receiving a 5-m-diameter TBM; and the final lining, designed to withstand all static and seismic loads and to remain viable for the intended design life. This paper presents design and construction considerations for these shafts against the background of and lessons learned from past project experiences.

This chapter describes the nature and occurrence of the principal clay minerals that are used as ceramic raw materials, explains how these raw materials are used to produce finished goods, and summarizes positive and negative trends that will affect future demand for raw materials and products in the ceramic industry. The term ceramics was derived from the ancient Greek keramikos (a clay jar). A ceramic product is a material that has been fired to at least 468.3°C (Mitchell, 1983). In addition to being one of our earliest manufacturing and construction materials, ceramic products are among the earliest records of civilization. The enduring significance of ceramics is shown by the fact that, even today, the manufacture of whitewares, brick and related red-fired wares, refractories, and engineered ceramics continues to be a major sector of the US economy. A wide range of materials can be made into ceramic products, although relatively few earth materials make up most of the ceramics in today's markets (Table 1). Most ceramic products are made from clay or a related material. The long history of clay use in the ceramics industry stems from its variable and sometimes unique physical and chemical properties, as well as its ubiquitous occurrence and relatively low cost. Clay is important to ceramics because of its plasticity, moldability and filterability, chemical content, color. refractoriness, solubility. corrosion resistance, electrical properties, and other properties that result from the essentially two dimensional morphology of the individual clay mineral platelets. Because of their basic relationships to the chemical and physical properties of clays, the chemical and mineralogical content have been the subject of continuous studies over the past few decades. Advances in knowledge about the chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of clays are responsible for most of the advances in processing. The need to remove off-colored contaminants, minerals with low melting points, and soluble salts has resulted in beneficiation by wet processing methods such as water washing. Water washing is restricted to kaolins, although low cost methods of water washing have been extended more recently to ball clays in Europe. High intensity magnetic filtration and flotation technologies have noticeably improved the quality of kaolins and broadly expanded their use in the ceramics industry. In addition to products for construction (e.g., brick, tile, sewer pipe, field drain pipe, cement, fiberglass, roof granules, and paint) and manufacturing (e.g., refractories, kiln furniture, sanitary ware, pottery, and dinnerware), clays are used in calcined form as ceramic fillers, carriers, extenders, and grogs. Ceramics suppliers are under economic pressure in several of these product areas. Manufacture of refractories in America has declined as steel production has decreased. The Schaffer linear kimberlite complex and Aultman kimberlite diatremes comprise a major part of the State Line kimberlite district of Colorado and Wyoming, which encompasses approximately 200 sq mi (500 km2). The district is located along the eastern flank of the northern Front Range and is underlain prin- cipally by Precambrian granites (approx. 1.4 b.y.) which have been intruded into an older (approx. 1.75 b.y.) metamorphic complex. The kimberlite occurrences are Devonian in age and are related to older Precambrian linear structures. The Schaffer kimberlite complex is a dike or fissure system with enlargements or blows developed at the intersections of cross faults; the two Aultman occurrences are diatremes. Kimberlite within the Schaffer complex is predominately grey to green phlogopite-calcite kimberlite breccia and tuffisitic breccia. Carbonate is abundant in some phases. Inclusions of host granite are common and locally abundant. Upper mantle peridotite, pyroxenite, and eclogite and lower crustal granulite xenoliths are present at many localities. Four phases of tuffisitic kimberlite breccia occur in the Aultman diatremes. These breccias are characterized by high carbonate and serpentine contents. Xenoliths of upper crustal granite, lower crustal granulite, and upper mantle assemblages are abundant locally. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rock xenoliths are also abundant in the Aultman diatremes but are absent in kimberlite of the Schaffer complex. From 1979 through September 1982, Cominco American, Inc., conducted geologic mapping, petrographic studies, geophysical surveys, geochemical surveys, and auger drilling in the Schaffer-Aultman project area as part of an extensive evaluation program of kimberlite occurrences. Forty bulk samples (approx. 8,000 metric tons) were excavated from the occurrences and then were processed for diamonds at Cominco American's heavy media separation and diamond recovery test plant at Fort Collins, Colorado. Indicated grades from the Schaffer and Aultman kimberlites range from approximately 0.5-1.0 carat per 100 metric tons and as such, the occurrences do not appear to approach economic viability at this time.

Dynatec Mining Limited contracted to sink a 1500 metre (4960 ft.) concrete lined shaft for Falconbridge Nickel Mines in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The shaft is 6.3 metres (20.5 ft) in diameter inside the concrete lining and is equipped with steel furnishings. Dynatec used the owner supplied 4.6 metre (15 ft.) diameter double-drum hoist to sink the shaft with 12.5 tonne buckets for muck removal and 4 cubic metre concrete buckets for concrete placement. One of the unique features of the shaft sinking operation is the use of a four-boom electric hydraulic drill jumbo permanently mounted in the shaft sinking stage. This paper will describe the performance obtained with the electric hydraulic drilling equipment and the high capacity muck removal and concreting equipment.

This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. In a study using butyl diglyme as an organic extractant, essen­tially complete extraction of gold from chloride leach solution was achieved. The extraction kinetics are so fast that the process could be completed in 30 seconds. Except for iron, co-extraction of other ionic species was insignificant. Co-extracted iron species were successfully scrubbed from the loaded organic using 10% HCl solution. High grade, >99.9%, gold was recov­ered from the loaded organic using 5% oxalic acid solution as the stripping agent at a temperature of 70°C to 80°C. Over 99% of the organic-loaded gold was stripped from the organic phase. The butyl diglyme extractant is being tested on a variety of gold-bearing feedstocks. Presented here are results obtained from two gravity concentrates.

Shallow water covers for preventing acid production in tailings are based on the principle of minimizing oxygen availability. Resuspension of material from the tailings bed may result in increased oxidation and metal releases since dissolved oxygen is at near saturation levels in the water cover. Resuspension can be caused by waves and currents strong enough to mobilize the surface of the tailings bed. Tailings resuspension was measured with sediment traps in the Upper Cell of the Heath Steele site near Mirarnichi, New Brunswick Canada. Although significant amounts of resuspended tailings were collected in all traps, analysis of resuspended solids and bed tailings suggests that for the observed wind conditions resuspension did not occur at locations where the water cover depth was greater or equal to 1.0 m. Currents were likely responsible for the transport of resuspended tailings from shallower areas to locations where the water cover was deeper than 1.0 m.

The apatite deposits in east-central Bahia, Brazil, are about 50 km east of Serra do Jacobina, between lat. 11° and 12° S. and long. 39°40' and 40° W. Apatite was found and examined at 15 localities in a mineralized belt that strikes about N.25° - 30 W. over a distance of about 100 km, but the size of the deposits has not yet been determined. Rocks of the region consist of a sequence of Precambrian migmatites and quartz feldspar paragneisses containing units of pyroxene-rich rocks, lenses of sillimanite-bearing quartzite, amphibolite zones, and calc-silicate marble lenses. Pegmatites and granites of probable anatectic origin (anatexite) are abundant. Faults are numerous. Clastic sediments of Tertiary and Quaternary ages cover most of the area; thus, outcrops of the Precambrian rocks are sparse. Trenches and pits have exposed mineralized zones as much as 10 m wide at some localities within the region. A layer of apatite at least 1 ½ m thick is exposed in a trench at Lagoa do Mel. At Rio do Peixe, vertical shafts have penetrated a mineralized zone, to a depth of as much as 13 m, of which about 25 percent is apatite. Apatite is massive or forms minute crystals, stringers, and disseminated grains in alkalic host rocks. At Apolinario, euhedral crystals of apatite are as much as 50 cm long and 30 cm in diameter. Associated minerals include vermiculite, biotite, scapolite, opal, chalcedony, epidote, montmorillonite, chlorite, kaolinite, sericite, magnetite, and limonite. Apatite is everywhere intimately associated with pyroxene-rich rocks, alkalic syenite pegmatites, and alkalic granite pegmatites. At Panelas-Retiro, apatite is associated with pegmatites, crystalline calcite (vein calcite), vermiculite, and pyroxene-bearing rocks. Analyses of samples show that the apatite is radioactive and rare-earth-bearing. Traces of vanadium and titanium were detected by spectroscopic analysis. The apatite was probably derived from phosphatic zones in the original Precambrian sedimentary rocks and has been crystallized and some mobilized by high-temperature regional metamorphism (higher amphibolite facies) into veins, pegmatites, and along certain preferred beds and fractures. Radiometric and geophysical surveys, in addition to conventional geological investigations, are planned to further investigate the nature and economic potential of the deposits.

California, with less than 7,000,000 people in 1940, and over 19,000,000 in 1966. In 5 1/2 years, (1960-65) the southerly 14 counties of California, which together comprise one-half the land area of our state, had an increase in population greater than Colorado, or Arkansas, or Oregon, or any one of 19 other states.

For reasons of hydraulic design and constructability, water supply tunnel systems are often located relatively deep, in competent rock. Where the rock lies below a thick cover of water bearing soils, artificial ground freezing offers a low risk, cost-effective method of constructing access shafts. Several examples, in Kansas City, MO and in Brooklyn and Queens, NY, illustrate the use of freezing to provide structural support and ground water exclusion. In the case histories presented, the shafts range from 6m to 12m (20 to 40 ft) in diameter and soils vary from clays to boulder beds with depths in excess of 73m (240 ft) to competent bedrock. Where tunnels for infrastructure are designed to be driven in rock, vertical access may encounter a considerable thickness of overburden soils with groundwater. In such cases, shaft sinking problems are analogous to those confronted by mining engineers over 100 years ago. At that time, newly developed refrigeration machines were set to freeze the ground water and stabilize running sands. Although modern technology has refined our efforts, the basic features of the ground freezing to be described here are the same as those used in the last century. Vertical holes drilled on a circle surrounding the shaft site are equipped with leak-free steelpipes through which a refrigerated brine is circulated. In this manner, a frozen cylinder, seated in rock, is formed when the earth freezes between adjacent pipes. Shaft excavations take place inside a self-supporting, ground-water excluding structure. For mines, no better method of sinking production shafts through deepwater-bearing ground has yet been established. Indeed, major deposits of coal, potash, and salt would have remained inaccessible to this day were it not for the continued use of artificial ground freezing. If mine shaft freezing became relatively commonplace, early applications to civil engineering were few. Mussche and Waddington (1946) mention only five projects between 1892 and 1935; three of these relate to subway or vehicular tunnels in Paris, Antwerp, and (the most extensive) at five locations of the Moscow Metropolitan Railway development. High purity, high brightness limestone deposits in the San Bernardino Mountains and Mojave Desert region occur in upper Paleozoic carbonate rocks which are part of an upper Precambrian and Paleozoic sequence that unconformably overlies crystalline basement. The Paleozoic strata are divided into formations and members, and correlated with strata of the inner Cordilleran miogeocline. The region has been affected by multiple Mesozoic intrusive, contact, and regional metamorphic events. Structure is complex, and includes polyphase Mesozoic folding and thrusting, and complex Cenozoic structures. The area continues to be seismically active. High brightness (white), high purity crystalline limestone deposits are uncommon because their formation is dependent on several geologic processes which include; 1) depositional environment, 2) contact and or regional metamorphism, 3) folding and faulting, 4) uplift and erosion, and 5) preservation through geologic time. The complex geologic history of the San Bernardino Mountains and Mojave Desert region has allowed the formation of several large high brightness, high purity limestone deposits which are currently being mined or will be mined in the future. Specialty Minerals, Inc. (formerly Ptizer), Pluess-Staufer (California), Inc. and Partins Limestone, Inc. produce high brightness, high purity limestone from several quarries in the San Bernardino Mountains. These active mines combined with undeveloped deposits controlled by Pluess-Staufer in the San Bernardino Mountains, New York Mountains, and Bristol Mountains in the Mojave area, contain proven and or indicated reserves sufficient to sustain production through the 21st century Detailed geologic mapping, intimate knowledge of stratigraphy, recognition of complex structures, sampling, drilling and assay data, are proven tools in the discovery and delineation of high brightness, high purity limestone deposits in the San Bernardino Mountains and Mojave Desert region of southern California.

During 1983, 42.2% of the 686.0 (624.3 Mt) million tons of coal reported, 289.6 (263.5 Mt) million tons were mechanically cleaned, of which 107 (97.4 Mt) million tons were cleaned by dense media (magnetite and sand) processes.' The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes increased from 7 to 38% between 1938 and 1983. The Electric Power Research Institute estimates that 150 million tons (137 Mt) of coal were cleaned by heavy-media processes in 1986, and that this number may increase to 265 million tons (241 Mt) by 1990.2 Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes that clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density intermediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes generally offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes: • Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of raw coal whose specific gravity is near the specific gravity of separation. • Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled within + 0.005 sp gr units. • Ability to handle a wide range of coal sizes. • Ability to change specific gravity of separation to meet varying market requirements. • Ability to handle fluctuations in feed, in terms of both quantity and quality. Unfortunately, dense medium processes can have the following disadvantages: • Relatively high capital costs caused primarily by the need for equipment to collect and recycle the medium. Relatively high operating costs caused primarily by operation of medium recycle equipment and loss of medium.

Laboratory testing for flotation circuit design is carried out on a routine basis in a large number of lab- oratories throughout the world. Usually a sample of ore, assumed to be characteristic of the material to be processed in a future plant, having a mass of the order of a few kilograms, is ground in a batch ball or rod mill, in the presence of water and some re- agents (for pH control, etc. .. ); after dilution to the adequate solid concentration, the resulting slurry is transferred into a laboratory batch flotation machine, having a volume which can vary from 0.5 to 8 10 -3m3. Various types of machines are in common use, manufactured by the same companies that market industrial size flotation machines. The operation of flotation in the laboratory is carried out by an experienced technician, who uses parameters such as impeller rotation speed, air flowrate addition, froth height, froth removal rate, in conjonction with reagent addition sequence, to "test" the ore. After flotation, the froth products ("concentrates"), and the solids remaining in the cell are filtered, dried, and analyzed for the various elements of interest. For flotation circuit design, a kinetic test is usually carried out, in which the froth products obtained at various times are collected to assess the time response of the ore in the laboratory machine with the combination of reagents used. Although this description is rather sketchy, it enables to outline some of the major difficulties in using laboratory data for flotation circuit design: 1. ore sample representatively 2. feed preparation procedure (laboratory compared to industrial scale) 3. laboratory procedures (type of ma- chine, type of operation, experimental errors. . . ) 4. flotation machine scale-up 5. flotation kinetic scale-up 6. flotation circuit design using laboratory data These various points will be discussed in the present paper, in order to stress the problem areas as well as possible solutions. Natural cold seepages are characterized as rapid upward transports of methane from deeper parts of geological structures to the seafloor. Thermogenic and/or biogenic methane generated in deep sediments moves up to seafloor, and major part of methane is consumed in anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and hydrogen sulfide is created in anaerobic sulfate reduction by consortium of microorganisms. Then the hydrogen sulfide is utilized by chemosynthetic communities near the seafloor, such as Acharax, Calyptogena, Bathymodiolus, and the mat-forming bacteria Beggiatoa (Fig. 1). When the supply of methane is large or rapid, remaining methane escapes from seafloor, and it is aerobically oxidized in seawater. A mass balance ecosystem model of chemosynthetic community around natural cold seepages in sediment layer and on seafloor has been created and improved by the authors (Yamazaki et al., 2005; Takeuchi et al., 2007). The model is constructed from 3 main processes as schematically shown in Fig. 2: (1) Methane supply process; (2) Ecosystem process; (3) Water column process. The part of chemosynthetic communities is in the ecosystem process. A numerical model CANDI (Carbon And Nutrient Diagenesis) was developed by Boudreau (1996) to simulate the biogeochemical processes such as organic matter, oxidant, nutrient, bi-product, and pH diagenesis in aquatic surface sediments. Then, the improved version named C. CANDI was developed (Luff and Wallmann, 2003; Luff et al., 2004). The authors created the same type carbon and nutrient diagenesis process model with calcium carbonate formation like C. CANDI (Yamazaki et al., 2005), and have added the sulfur oxidizing and immobilization processes (Takeuchi et al., 2007). The sulfur oxidizing and immobilization processes are connected with the carbon and nutrient diagenesis process model.

Recovery of uranium from wet-process phosphoric acid is a newly developed source of uranium. Many processes have been developed but the OPAP (octylphenyl acid phosphate) process is still the valuable one because the OPAP reagent compound has the high extraction ,power and cheap cost. The OPAP process was already studied by murthy(1) in 1970 and its complete process flow sheet was first fulfilled by F.T. Hurst(2) in 1974. WCFC(3) (western Co-op Fertilizer Ltd.) in cooperation with ESI (Earth Science Inc.) set up the OPAP uranium recovery pilot plant in Canada in 1978. We have studied the OPAP process since 1974 and first improved the OPAP extractant by proper adjustment of the DOPAP/MOPAP mole ratio with CH3OH-H20 method, resulting in shortening the phase separation time and avoiding the precipitation occurrence in our process. Second, we utilize the reduction and oxidation occurring by DC power supply on either side of the membrane to achieve the extraction and stripping at the same time. An improved OPAP process in which high recovery yield of uranium and acid uncontaminated by iron has been developed in our laboratory.

The spatial distribution of airborne dusts, deposition of dust in the airway, as well as the effect of airflow velocity and particle density on dust behavior in mine airways were studied in a set of experiments performed in a mine airway under controlled conditions. Considerable deposition of dust near the source was indicated. Pronounced effects due to velocity were observed in ambient dust concentration and deposition along the mine airway, both in the respirable and the total size ranges. Cross-sectional concentration measurements indicate an increase in concentration from the roof to the floor. The average cross-sectional concentration is about 75% of the concentration in the center of the airway.

A mine fire or roof collapse may necessitate the reversal of main fans to isolate the fire or provide an escapeway. Hence, to assist the mine operator in estimating the flow and pressure during reversal, Engineers International, Inc. conducted a laboratory and field study of the reverse performance characteristics of main mine fans. Laboratory tests were performed using a 96-inch (2.4 m) diameter vane axial fan to establish the forward and reverse performance characteristics under controlled conditions. Subsequently, a field test was conducted in a Colorado oil shale mine during which two 79-inch (2 m) diameter fans were reversed. The data obtained indicate that reverse performance characteristics are dependent upon the blade angle and the hub to tip ratio. The quantity in the reverse mode ranged from 30 to 65% less than in the forward mode, and the static pressure was directly proportional to the square of the quantity.

Since gold was first discovered in Colorado in the late 1850s' mining has been a major part of the state's economic history, according to Stanley Dempsey, chairman and chief executive officer of Denver- based Royal Gold Inc. While the mining industry has seen some lean times throughout the past century, it has always bounced back. Today, dozens of major gold companies are headquartered in the Denver area. The state's coal mines produced record amounts during 1996. And even some of Colorado's uranium mines are resuming production. Dempsey joined other speakers in addressing the state of Colorado's mining industry during the Colorado Mining Association's (CMA) National Western Mining Conference. Some 800 people attended the CMA meeting, held Feb. 2-5 in Denver. The meeting was the association's 100th since it was incorporated in 1897.
