Many remnants of gold exploitation in the Middle Ages were found in the Lower Silesia region. The oldest evidence of such activity was found in the neighborhood of Zloty Stok and comes from the 7th century. Mining of precious and non-precious metal ores has a great relevance in the late Middle Ages when advanced metallurgic technologies were mastered, that allowed to obtain gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc and arsenic from complex ores occurring in the oldest middle part of Sudetes. Historically it concerned the area of the Swidnica Principality and Klodzko County. Experience obtained in Freiberg, which is located close to the Lower Silesia, was used in the development of mining. A high level of mining and metallurgic technology was obtained in the 15th century that caused significant increase of production of the metals mentioned above. Unfortunately, the good time of Lower Silesian mining lasted only up to the 18th century; the notion of preservation of cultural heritage was unknown at that time. The Lower Silesian medieval mines were not in such a fortunate situation as the ?Wieliczka? and ?Bochnia? mines, which are operating to present-day, and which made preservation of the most interesting headings and objects possible. All these objects are now available for visitors. However, in the case of the middle Sudetes it seems that it is often sufficient to localize old shafts and headings on the basis of careful observations and old maps and carry out some earthwork to uncover medieval headings and objects of underground mining activity. They are often preserved in amazingly good state; this also pertains to mining devices. Another issue is of course the permanent preservation of that heritage and its possible availability for re-searchers and tourists. Some success has been achieved in that field (Zloty Stok Gold Mine is a good example), but also problems were encountered in many cases. The Lower Silesian Coal Basin, which has not been exploited for 10 years is an evidence that there is not a holistic conception of mining heritage renovation. Many attractive mining objects disappeared irrecoverably from the mountainous landscape of the Middle Sudetes despite common consciousness of their significance for cultural development of Silesia and other regions.

With the advent of the environmental "green" movement of the 1960s, eventually leading to Earth Day 1970, Congress responded by passage of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), 1970. NEPA gave impetus to a flood of federal acts and laws in the subsequent three decades. Many of those protecting man's environment, health, and well-being also affect mining. For purposes of this chapter, a current mineral law summarization lends itself to a division into two parts: viz., Part I, General Mining Law, and Part II, Enviromining Law. The word enviromining has been coined by the author and is defined and used herein as those federal and state statutes and regulations that were created to provide protection and preservation of man's environment, health, safety, and welfare, and they have particular application to and affect on mining activities. They are listed and treated under Enviromining Laws in Part II. Mining, as a basic industry to provide the essential minerals for mankind's necessities and well-being, truly reflects the mining industry's slogan, "If it can't be grown, it must be mined." Without the basic minerals and rocks won from the earth by mining and mineral processing for their valuable physical properties or chemical constituents, man would soon be forced to revert to the cave-dwelling age. Unfortunately, for man to survive in the "manner of life to which he has become accustomed," he is caught between the demands of cleaning up his deteriorating environment and a continued supply of his basic requirements and amenities for daily living supplied by mining of the earth's minerals. He must have "clean living" at the same time with "good living;" neither is expendable. A very high pricetag accompanies this essential and critical choice which must be paid by society. The United States is internationally recognized as the world leader in environmental matters. Many countries are following suit, principally the other Anglo nations. Because US law is founded and based on English law, on occasion, Anglo-American law is referred to and cited as authority in litigation anywhere in the Anglo-American world of jurisprudence. For this reason, and because mining and the industry is international in nature and operations, some British Commonwealth cases will appear in various topics. If the case is of interest to the reader, further inquiry at a law library may be made through use of the case's style and citation given. "Style" refers to the name of the litigating parties. "Citation" refers to the law publication in which the case and decision may be found, as well as the jurisdiction and court of decision. Citation of cases from the United States and British Commonwealth nations is explained under Case Citation Explanation. Space and time limit exhaustive treatment of subjects and covering all geographic and jurisdictional areas. This chapter is intended as a broad outline and is based on the author's master's thesis at the University of Missouri-Rolla, 1992. Current extensions of the European railway network require long TBM drives in the diameter range of 10 m under critical and varying rock conditions. In view of that and in particular for a 7 km long high-speed railway tunnel in Spain to be started in mid-2003 a new design for a hard rock Double Shield TBM has been developed by SELI (Italy) and Jäger (Austria) in collaboration with Mitsubishi (Japan)and Robbins (USA). Due to the new design and operational features that new type of TBM has been named Universal Double Shield TBM with a further extended area of application. Special attention has been given to outstanding torque and thrust capacities combined with the shortest possible length of an innovative shield arrangement, different advance modes in various ground conditions and further developed exploration and treatment facilities.

PPC (Public Power Corporation) operates a new power plant at the South-West part of Crete. Recently the extension of the Power Plant started. ATHENA SA the main contractor of the project assigned to EXORIXI SA the implementation of a blast vibration monitoring program and prevention-evaluation of risks caused by construction blastings inside or very close to the operating part of the power station. The blasting parameters and characteristic elements that had been evaluated, the measures that had been taken and materialized, the overall risk management and the results of the whole program are presented in this paper.

Permanent ventilation controls such as stoppings, overcasts, and undercasts for use in coal mines are required to meet MSHA’s safety standards for fire endurance and flexural strength. Due to technological advances in materials and their design for use as ventilation controls, an engineering program was established to evaluate newer or “nontraditional” ventilation controls. The program is intended to assist manufacturers, enforcement personnel and mine operators in determining if “nontraditional” ventilation controls, for example plastic membrane construction and lightweight block, meet the prescribed safety standards. The program is presented with a description of required tests and examples of products evaluated.

Phase One of Copenhagen Metro opened on October 19th, 2002 and is already a great success. 11 stations are open and Phase Two with 6 additional stations will open during 2003. Phases One and Two include 21 km dual track, whereof 10 km is in tunnel. 17 stations (six deep, three shallow, and eight above ground) will service passengers with trains running at 90 seconds intervals. This paper will discuss the various aspects of the Metro, where construction methods include TBM bored, NATM, Cut & Cover, Secant Piles and Diaphragm Walls.

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, long-wall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air to control respirable dust and methane gas. As a result, air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high-velocities, especially during shield advance as dust falls from the shield canopy directly into theair stream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation by shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH in a wind tunnel designed to study dust entrainment in high-velocity airstreams. Dust was introduced into the tunnel to determine dust concentration as it relates to entrainment, dilution, air velocity, and particle adhesion. Airborne dust samples were obtained by iso-kinetic sampling using BGI cyclones to quantify respirable dust concentration at the various air velocities. Laboratory tests were con-ducted at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 10.1 m/s (400 to 2000 fpm),and significant differences in airborne respirable dust levels were measured. This research is being conducted to provide fundamental information on the entrainment characteristics of respirable dust at high air velocities, which will subsequently lead to solutions for shield dust control. A discussion of the test procedures and results are presented.

During subsidence, the ground surface may settle, change slope, change curvature, go into tension, and/or go into compression. In response to these ground movements, buildings and buried utilities in the subsidence area may settle, tilt, bend, distort, and sustain extension, compression and/or torsion. In order to develop measures to protect existing structures and utilities, or to design new structures and utilities to withstand potential movements in areas of subsidence, it is necessary to understand the interaction between the ground and the building or buried the utility. This paper reviews subsidence-induced ground movements, how these ground movements are transmitted to and accommodated by buildings and buried pipelines, and how these structures may alter ground movements relative to free field subsidence-induced ground movements.

Introduction The US coal mining industry is in the midst of a serious economic crisis. To overcome increased operating costs, operators must take advantage of technological advancements in mining systems and equipment. A relatively new concept available to underground operators is that of extending the cutting depth for continuous mining machines (continuous miners). This system is referred to as deep-cut mining, and may be described as mining cuts to depths greater than the standard 6 m (20 ft). Productivity is increased through the reduction in continuous miner tram time since the machine stays longer in each working face. To successfully implement a deep-cut mining system, three problems must be overcome: Exposing personnel to unsupported roof, methane removal, and controlling respirable dust. Remote control cutting The solution to the unsupported roof problem is remote control. Recent advances in remote operation, especially in radio remote controls, have resulted in what is generally accepted as a safe and reliable tool. By installing remote control on the continuous miner, the operator and helper can now be stationed in a supported area. This allows for improved visibility while cutting coal. With this in mind, the limiting factor now becomes the position of the haulage equipment operator. North River No. 1 uses Joy 21SC shuttle cars and Jeffrey 4110 diesel ramcars. These cars are pulled against the bumper of the continuous miner. Thirteen meters (43 ft) can be cut with the shuttle car and 14 m (45 ft) with the Ramcar before the operator of the car is inby permanent supports. By loading away from the bumper, about 1.5 m (5 ft) can be added, bringing total cut depths up to 14.5 and 15 m (48 and 50 ft), respectively. Methane removal The second problem involves methane removal, and the line curtain-to-face distance. In other words, how to maintain the line curtain to allow sufficient ventilation to remove methane and not expose workers to unsupported roof. The solution, in most cases, is to use a blowing-type ventilation system. Unlike the exhausting system that, to be effective, must be installed within 3 m (10 ft) of the working face, the blowing system can be effective at greater distances from the face. Numerous studies have documented the advantages of a blowing-type ventilation system over an exhausting system. Furthermore, a blowing system can be significantly improved by in¬creasing the velocity of the air delivered without increasing the volume of air. With this greater ventilation efficiency, it is possible to secure ventilation plan approval from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for a greater curtain set-back distance. This eliminates the need for personnel to travel inby permanent supports to extend the face brattice. The distance from the face MSHA will approve, however, is on a mine-by-mine basis. MSHA will evaluate the particular mine's face methane liberation rates, along with the specific proposals regarding face ventilation volumes and velocities. Dust control The third problem is controlling respirable dust. This is actually a result of the solution to the second problem. In the blowing system, while mining on the slab cut, both the continuous miner and haulage units are located on the dusty side of the line curtain (Fig. 1). In the early 1970s, underground operators virtually abandoned this system, in order to comply with the 2 mg/m3 (0.87 gr per cu ft) federal dust standards. Roof deterioration in weak moisture-sensitive rock leads to roof falls in coal mines. An observation site was set up in intake air at an underground coal mine in central Ohio to evaluate the time-dependent deterioration of moisture-sensitive roof rock. By periodically collecting and weighing the rock falling from the roof, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was able to quantify the deterioration of the moisture-sensitive shale roof. The measurements showed that more roof rock is falling in the dry winter months. Movements in an intersection were monitored in order to determine if deformation correlated with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. The rate of intersection roof-to-floor convergence was found to be cyclical and related to seasonal changes, with more convergence during the months of April through September. At the study site intersection, the roof beam did not show deflection indicating movement most likely due to mine floor deformation. The bolt load also increased in the warmer months before shedding load, possibly due to rock failure. Temperature and relative humidity sensors, placed in holes in the roof show that mine air does not mix with the air in the holes. Consistent saturation levels of relative humidity were measured in the holes and it appears that high levels of moisture may have migrated into the bolt holes from roof shales. A roof sealant applied to a portion of the test roof appears to be preserving the roof and reducing the amount of rock fall into the entry, while the screened area virtually eliminated rock falling from the roof.

Man is a short time resident of the planet Earth. He does not have the memory to fully comprehend just what is going on. His span of knowledge can be related to the life of the world to see that this is the case. A museum at Grand Canyon features a geologic clock that compresses Earth's age of 4.5 billion years into 24 hours. Man's estimation of the earth's age has changed radically in the past half century. In 1930, one prominent geologist asserted that the age of the Earth was ". . . at least 600 million years." Later, physicists used radioactive clocks to conclude that the Earth's age was 1.6 billion years. More recently, geologists have found rocks in northwestern Australia estimated to have formed 4.5 billion years ago. As we learn more about what is underfoot, the estimate of Earth's age might change again. The Grand Canyon's 24 hour clock shows that the dinosaurs were the dominant life form for 165 million years. Then an event occurred that wiped them out about 65 million years ago. The prevailing theory is that an asteroid struck the Earth and generated enough dust to wipe out the vegetation upon which most dinosaurs fed. During Earth's existence, there have been at least 12 such mass extinctions - the worldwide disappearance of diverse animal groups. On a planet that has been around for 4.5 billion years and that may continue to exist for another 4.5 billion, it seems reasonable to expect that further mass extinction's will occur. According the Grand Canyon's 24hour clock, the 165 million year reign of the dinosaurs amounted to about five minutes. On that 24 hour clock, the world has been dinosaur free for almost two minutes.

The determination of the proper cutoff grade for an open pit metal mine is based on economic criteria and the operating philosophy of the mining company. Previous papers have dealt with the balance of a fixed mine production capacity versus economic return. Mine production capacity is often controlled by the amount of mining equipment and the working area in the pit. A complete cutoff grade strategy is a balance of economic return of mining higher grade material versus the capital costs of additional production capacity and the operating cost of moving the waste and low grade material to assure proper ore release. An approach to the problem is presented which is based in part on work by previous authors and provides guidelines to proper cutoff grade strategy encompassing the time value of money and variable commodity prices.

Thunder Basin Coal Company received the 1987 Wyoming Excellence in Surface Mining Award for construction of the State's first major sediment control reservoir to be designed using the new settleable sol ids standard. Use of this standard resulted in construction cost savings of more than $250,000; reduced water quality monitoring; enhanced downstream channel stability because of more natural sediment loading; allowed simultaneous establishment of permanent waterfowl and fisheries habitat; and provided a quality recreational site. This article will address factors associated with the design and construction of that sediment reservoir and the benefits that were realized. Consistent increase has been the mark of North American potassium (K) consumption. In 23 of the last 25 years there was upward progress The pace of usage has quickened in the past three or four years This, together with a predicted accelerated future demand, has created unprecedented interest -and activity in the potash industry. Potassium enjoyed a ninefold increase in consumption from 1940 to the present time in North America (Figure 1). Since 1950, it increased from just over a million tons of potash (K20) annually to nearly three million tons in 1964. World-wide usage exclusive of mainland China is now about 10 million metric tons. Some predictions call for another doubling in consumption in the next 10 to 15 years, About 20 percent of the four million tons of K20 produced in North America is now exported overseas and this percentage is likely to increase in the years ahead. Ten years ago, exports represented only 3-1/2 percent of total K2O production from this continent.

"Excavation and initial support of the New Irvington Tunnel presented significant challenges, including rapidly changing ground conditions, heavy ground loads, and squeezing. Such behaviors were anticipated from historic tunneling records of the adjacent Existing Irvington Tunnel, and extensive site investigation, but clearer understanding of their actual extent and causes has resulted from convergence measurements, observations of ground behavior, initial support monitoring and detailed geologic mapping. Time-dependent movements, documented hours to months after excavation in clay-rich rock and in moderately to intensely fractured rock, identified squeezing areas, allowed classification by currently-used predictive methods and added to the list of lessons learned in tunneling such ground. INTRODUCTION In March 2003 the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) authorized funding for the $4.6 billion Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) to repair, replace, and seismically upgrade its water system. The program consists of 35 local projects located within San Francisco and 48 regional projects located in several counties from the Sierra foothills to the San Francisco Bay Area. The New Irvington Tunnel (NIT), a key component of the WSIP, is located east of Fremont in Alameda County, on the east side of San Francisco Bay. The NIT is a new 18,660 foot (5,689 m), redundant tunnel, 190 to 670 feet (58–204 m) offset from, and subparallel to the Existing Irvington Tunnel (EIT). Built between 1928 and 1932, the EIT was constructed with an unreinforced cast-in-place concrete lining and is vulnerable to damage in the event of a major earthquake along the two closest active faults. The Hayward Fault is located less than a mile west of the tunnel, and the Calaveras Fault is located half a mile east of the tunnel. Although the alignment does not intersect these faults, the shaking and sympathetic displacement along secondary faults that cross the tunnel alignment are potential hazards. The NIT provides a seismically reliable water transmission facility capable of withstanding earthquake damage and maintaining continuous water service after a major earthquake. The NIT also adds system redundancy and provides for operation flexibility of running water through both tunnels, or through one tunnel while the other is out of service for inspections and maintenance."

The HW Process Technologies Engineered Membrane Separation (EMS"') technology is a patented system for the removal of multivalent base metal cyanide complexes from cyanide process streams, and EMSni permeate, concentrate and recovery terminology is explained. Specifically, use of the EMS™ system for the removal of Cu(CN)i- and Cu(CN)43- cop­per from cyanide process streams is discussed. The historical "Copper-Gold" processing paradigm of copper related cyanide consumption and complexation and methods to recover copper and copper complexed cyanide from Cu-Au process solutions are summarized. An advanced stage R&D sequential Cu-Au leaching circuit is proposed wherein two PLS streams are generated, i.e., a high copper tenor "first flush" Cu-PLS and low Cu tenor "second flush" Au-PLS. Copper and cyanide recovery from the EMS"' concentrate generated by Cu-PLS EMSTI,f processing by well known acidification processes and lesser developed, but techni­cally feasible, electrowinning processes are projected to be lower cost than similar dilute solution treatments. Gold is described as Merrill-Crowe plant recoverable from the EMS™ permeate stream coming from the Cu-PLS EMS"' process. Gold is also recovered from the EMSTI,f permeate generated by the processing of an Au-PLS bleedstream. The economics of the proposed Cu-Au-EMS"' circuits are estimated as $2/ gpd capital cost for large systems and $1- $3/ l 000 gallons treated operating cost plus royalty.

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) continues to be a concern of the mining industry. A new noise standard (30 CFR, Part 62) is aimed at reducing NIHL in mining through engineering and administrative noise controls. However, the difficulty and expense of implementing engineering controls can make administrative controls an attractive alternative for reducing worker noise exposure. Over the last three years, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted worker noise exposure surveys in underground and surface coal mines and coal preparation plants. The surveys revealed numerous possible administrative controls and an approach to implementation and analysis. The surveys have shown that worker dosimetry, time-motion studies, and equipment noise profiling are important aspects of effectively utilizing administrative controls. A description of the approach for selecting, implementing, and evaluating administrative controls, and a list of administrative controls, are reported.

Coal gasification solid residue (slag) contains unconverted carbon (char), which is considered an impurity for utilization applications of slag. Under this study, table concentration was used to process approximately 24,000 pounds of a nominal-3.4 mm gasifier slag (-85% ash) to separate high (-100%) ash slag from low (-50%) ash char. The results indicated a nearly ideal separation of the slag from the char for sizes coarser than about 1 mm. An overall slag yield of 71 % was obtained. The slag was sufficiently clean to be used as feed material for the production of expanded lightweight aggregate. The recovered char had an ash content of about 47% and was a nominal -1mm in size.

When most people think of coal mining, they envision men in soot-covered clothes and hard hats digging at deposits in deep underground caverns. These mental images commonly include coal cars rumbling on rails as they emerge from the earth, filled to the brim with rocky ore. The world of modern, longwall coal mining is a far different place. Yes, it?s underground, the miners still wear hard hats and the environment is filled with soot. However, today?s mining operations are carefully monitored and the entire process is highly automated. Five kilometers (3 miles) underground, a sophisticated, high-powered mining machine moves steadily through a 2-m (6-ft) high tunnel at an average speed of 3.2 km/h (2 mph), carving out coal, then conveying it to a crusher and carrying it to the surface. Instead of digging out the ore, a longwall mining system slices it from the exposed tunnel face, using giant rotating shears. The shorn coal tumbles onto a conveyer below the shears and is conveyed to the stageloader, where it is crushed and dumped onto the main conveyer belt that eventually hauls it out of the mine. Integral to the longwall shear and conveyor is a moving metal roof that protects it from the thousand plus feet of ground above. The ceiling panels automatically advance above the shears, powered by hydraulic roof supports that stand on the other side of the tunnel, moving in a slow, sideways lock-step with the shears. This complex and massive machine makes longwall mining the most ef?cient and productive method for excavating coal. In fact, it produces 2.7 kt to 22.6 kt (3,000 to 25,000 st) of ore per shift, versus 544 to 907 st (600 to 1,000 st) for the conventional room-and-pillar mining. Using that method, miners develop one section of a mine at a time after carving out load-bearing columns of coal to support the roof above their heads. Longwall mining also is considered safer than the room-and-pillar method, largely because the process is mostly automated, requiring fewer workers. Still, longwall mining has its drawbacks: The equipment is expensive and the mining conditions are harsh. An entire longwall system can cost between $50 million and $100 million, while the electrical controls used to operate it can cost an additional $1 million to $2 million. These investments grind away all day, every day, in hot tunnels filled with coal dust.
