Heavy media separation (HMS) is one of the most widely used gravity methods in the mineral industry. The feed is separated, according to the specific gravities, into two products; float (light) and sink (heavy) particles. The universal acceptance of the process is due to simplicity, efficiency and robustness for ease of control. However, if optimum separation is desired during the operation of heavy media plants, a delicate balance of a number of variables is essential. Among the variables, the two which are generally the most frequently checked and controlled are specific gravity and consistency of the medium. The latter is a function of the settling rate of the media. The medium is generally made up of finely ground ferrosilicon, magnetite, galena, shale, quartz sand, clay contaminants and water. The frequently present clay in the medium acts as a stabilizing agent, since the coarse heavy medium solids (called media) would quickly settle if they were mixed only in water. Clay concentration of the medium varies between 3-7% by height (1,2). Although clay is essential for reasonable media stability, clay concentration greater than 7-8% imparts too high a viscosity to the medium, and the feed cannot accurately stratify and therefore separate into the required products. To be on the safe side, plant operators clean the medium from most of the clays, and would rather work at a lower stability than have a very viscous medium on their hands. The most recent advance in the area of consistency control rlas made by the introduction of atomized (spherical) ferrosilicon (3). This extended the upper limit of the use of ground ferrosilicon from 3.3 to approximately 3.6, broadening the range of the optimum operating conditions. A viscosity control method was also worked out by the use of low cost additives which lower viscosity while retaining a favorable low setting rate (4). Recently (5) polymers have been successfully used in oil well drilling muds then the requirements were mainly to suspend and transport cuttings during the periodic shutdowns and dril1ings respectively. Rogers Group, Inc., is the nation's largest privately held aggregates producer (primarily producing crushed limestone and secondarily sand & gravel) and a major regional asphalt paving construction contractor. The company also has interests in building supplies and coal. Facilities are concentrated in five states in the central U.S. (Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama), with an additional location in Southwestern Virginia. At the request of its then CEO and with support from the company's ownership, Rogers embarked on a strategic planning program in late 1986 by retaining an outside management consulting firm. The ultimate goal of this program was to develop a self-sustaining strategic planning process to inject a strategic dimension into every manager's business thinking and to improve company performance. Since then, Rogers has internalized the outside consultants' strategic planning framework --initially, using it wholesale, and later, greatly streamlining and tailoring both the planning process and product to meet the specific needs of the company. Implementation of strategies developed from strategic planning has resulted in significant improvements throughout the organization. The latest product of the strategic planning effort is a company-wide (or, "corporate") strategic plan that carries the theme of "Market Leadership through Excellence". This paper provides a case study of successful corporate strategic planning by examining the evolution of strategic planning at Rogers and by summarizing the key elements of a sound planning process and product.

I would like to first summarize the relevant health information relating to the workers and general populations around uranium mining as a basis for understanding the hazards associated with these operations and their available remedies. This discussion will summarize the literature on Radon and its daughters, among the most toxic uranium decay products. Second, I will discuss waste handling in the uranium industry: past, present and future, discussing exploration, mining, and milling and the volumes of water and solid and gaseous wastes which are associated with these various phases of uranium operations. This paper will also include a discussion of the various past and present materials handling technologies and their responsiveness to the concern for uranium waste isolation. I will then conclude with a summary of recent modifications in the relevant standards as applied to uranium mining and milling. Joseph Wagoner, a research epidemiologist with the U.S. Public Health Service has summarized the literature on uranium mining and its health effects in his written testimony as a commissioned witness in British Columbia Royal Commission of Inquiry into Uranium Mining in January of 1980, entitled Uranium, The U.S. Experience: A Lesson in History.1 Briefly summarizinq his report, as early as 1546, miners of uranium bearing ores in Central Europe were reported to have unusually hiqh frequencies of fatal lung disease2. As early as 1879, the real nature of pulmonary disorders among these miners was first diagnosed to be malignant neoplasia or lung cancers. Of 655 miners dying between 1875 and 1912, 40% or 276 of these Central Europe miners died of lung cancer.4 By 1939, it was reported that lung cancer mortality rate for miners in these Central European mining districts was several times (9.7 per 1000) higher than that for similar populations in Vienna, Austria (0.34 per 1000). Thus, before uranium mining began in the U.S., there was a considerable body of information linking uranium mining to lung cancers. The U.S. experience can be summarized in Table 1 also from Wagoner's B.C. The Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel, under construction in Seattle, will be the world's largest-diameter soil tunnel with an inside diameter of 19.2 m (63 ft) and an effective outside diameter of about 24.4 m (80 ft). The five-lane highway tunnel will be constructed using a "stacked-drift" scheme in which an articulated or "flexible" tunnel lining consisting of 24 concrete-filled drifts is constructed to form a horizontal compression ring followed by removal of the soil core. Geotechnical factors, including variable strength hard fissured soils, high horizontal stresses, potentially unstable sands, and prior slope instabilities, significantly influenced the innovative design and construction approach.

Recycling of such municipal solid wastes as glass containers, metal cans, and newspapers has received increasing attention recently. However, municipal solid wastes account for only 1% of the total solid waste stream in the United States. The remainder includes hazardous and non-hazardous industrial wastes. Generators of industrial wastes are facing higher landfill costs. Future liability potential, and public image concerns which are forcing them to seek innovative and often profitable solutions to minimize, reuse, and recycle their waste streams. Opportunities for the mining industry in industrial recycling include recovery of mining wastes and by-products, and utilization of mineral products for treating waste streams.

The strength of anchorage of various types of roof bolts in permafrost depends on the types of rock in which they are installed. Variation in the mine thermal regime results in weakening of the roof and walls, and at times total loss of ice cement bonds takes place in the surrounding rockmass. In mines with positive ventilation air temperature, the wedge or expansion types of bolts may become weakened due to the transfer of heat into the anchorage through the metal rod and subsequent thawing of rocks. Effective operation and evaluation of roof bolt systems for mine workings in permafrost require predictions of the dynamics of wall thawing by warm ventilation air. The Lower Olentangy Tunnel (LOT) Project involves the construction of a 17,000 ft (5,200 m) long, 12 ft (3.65 m) internal diameter Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) tunnel. The tunnel is excavated by using an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine designed to cope with soft ground, weak rocks and water pressure. The project is located in the city of Columbus, Ohio and the main geotechnical hazards are related to the heterogenous soils and the low overburden in an urban environment. This paper focuses on the performance of the EPB first drive and the comparison between the design assumptions and the actual TBM performance during construction.

"The drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a coproduct of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut off 10 percent of the world’s vanadium output. In February 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation.This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries — China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 96 percent of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage.This article summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal.Trend in vanadium explorationThe most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grades than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers.The 10 percent shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the state of Bahia in Brazil. It commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to produce between 7.6 and 8.6 kt (8,421 and 9,523 st) of V2O5 in 2016 at a target production cost of $3.71/lb (Largo Resources, 2016). This is the first primary vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in more than 35 years."

The practice of Countertrade and all of its variations has increased dramatically during the last five years in great part due to the worsening world economic situation and the Third World's increasing debt problems. Conventional wisdom has held that the goods finding their way into countertrade will tend to be manufactured goods of ever increasing value added. It is my contention that this has not been the case. The continued depression of most metals and minerals prices has conspired to keep a great number of metals and raw materials in the forefront of countertrade negotiations. The concept that if a country needs hard currency it will simply sell metals into world markets for cash has been significantly modified by countertrade which encourages subsidies for raw materials which are in turn funded by higher prices for the manufactured goods which the country must import. Countertrade is a term that is relatively new to most of us who have been involved in the international trade of metals and minerals, but it is one that we will continue to hear more of in the future. Countertrade as it is generally known today had its beginnings after the Second World War in Eastern Europe. As the shattered economies of Europe struggled to right themselves, a "cashless" system of trade developed. This system included such ancient concepts as barter as well as more modern ones like bilateral clearing agreements. For over 30 years countertrade was confined mainly to the COMECON nations and their various trade protocols with Third World nations. If metals and minerals were involved, there was little disruption of world markets by such examples as Cuba shipping ferronickel and sugar cane to the U.S.S.R. for a host of manufactured goods and oil. As the world's economy began to slow in the late 70's and the debt crisis began in earnest in the early 801s, this all began to change. As more and more nations which had previously been almost totally dependent upon their mineral wealth over-extended themselves in an attempt to industralize, they concurrently found their income from minerals falling, due to the decreased demand and subsequently lower prices available in the marketplace. At first these nations attempted to balance their payments by promoting the sales of their high value-added manufactured goods. We have all heard numerous examples of U.S. companies going to sell their high technology products in Rumania or Yugoslavia and being confronted with counterpurchase requirements for machine tools, shoes or drill bits. When faced with these demands, a number of companies chose not to sell into those markets while others merrily signed up the obligations without much intent to carry them out. The Performance Bonds required were generally minimal, especially when considered in light of the high margin inherent in high tech items; and the penalty clauses were equally small or nonexistent. A third group of companies actually tried to buy the machine tools or drill bits either for their own internal use or resale but found that due to poor quality and high prices, they were faced with a difficult if not impossible task. This is not to say that no one was able to fulfill a countertrade requirement, but the success ratio on these transactions was incredibly low. This was one of the major contributing factors to the reputation that countertrade has gained as a discipline ... "that it is mostly talk and very little action." In recent years, the need has become more and more accute for a high capacity, high intensity, wet magnetic separator for the concentration of finely ground, paramagnetic minerals. As a result of this increased interest, extensive test work has been conducted at our Central Test Laboratory, and the basic design for such a separator has been established. Three units have been developed to comprise a full line of this equipment: (a) Series 4L (laboratory), Figure I, is manually operated to permit maximum flexibility and precise control of each variable, with a capacity of 4 gallons per minute. (b) Series LOCC, Figure II, functions by automatically controlled feeding and washing cycles, and has a capacity of approximately 1.0 tons per hour. (c) Series 200CF, Figure III, basically consists of an annular pole box, rotating through the high intensity magnetic field. This unit has a capacity of approximately 20 tons per hour.

New developments have occurred in Wyoming's industrial minerals industry since the 32nd Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals in Laramie, Wyoming in 1996. The soda ash trona and bentonite industries have experienced overall growth. Gypsum and limestone production have remained constant, but have the potential for dramatic growth. The mining of zeolite ceased in 1997. The struggling dimension stone industry has increased production, but development has lagged behind the schedule predicted in 1996. The construction of a container glass plant and associated production of glass raw materials, as predicted in 1996 and imminent in 1998, is now on hold due to unforeseen market factors. Increases in railroad and highway construction have, and will, greatly increase the production of construction aggregate for local uses. An iron carbide industry, not foreseen in 1996, is in the planning stages.

EMR's recently commissioned Pilot Plant in Fredericton, N.B. Canada, the latest and largest in the company's sequence of prototype and demonstration systems, is being used as a process development facility for mining clients worldwide. Fitted with two microwave reactors and 75 kW generators, this plant is designed as a two-stage continuous processor with a throughput in the 5-10 tpd range depending upon the material feedstream. This facility has been used principally to calcine pyrite and arsenopyrite gold concentrates although it can readily accommo­date carbonaceous materials as well as a wide range of other ore types. Engineering details of the plant and the results of the first nine months of operation are presented. The plant has proven very successful as an advanced process development facility as well as a basic production unit module.

1. INTRODUCTION The economic importance of bringing a new mine to production in the shortest possible time, is well known. In recent years the rate of escalation of mining costs has accelerated more rapidly than at any time in the past. This fact has enhanced the need to reduce time schedules and made it an overriding and predominant objective when planning new shafts. The squeezed profit margins and widely fluctuating metal prices have also increased the emphasis being placed on this aspect. Moreover the increase in the present value of future profits due to the reduction in the time element, can be so substantial that expenditure on equipment and additional labour can be justified conditional on sufficient gain in shaft sinking speed being achieved. The emphasis on time saving becomes more abundantly clear when considering the very large increase in the capital required to bring a modern underground mine to production. As an example, the initial capital expenditure requirements for a large new gold mine in the Western Transvaal, which has commenced production recently, is estimated at R200M, and a major extension to another deep level mine in the same area is estimated at R300M. With the uncertainty of future metal prices and the recent trends in increasing inflation, it is becoming more difficult than ever to estimate the profitability of proposed mining projects and any cost saving due to more rapid sinking of shafts can only assist in this respect. Since the shaft systems are frequently the most expensive set of underground excavations and no other underground work can commence until they are completed, the speed of shaft sinking is subject to closer scrutiny than in the past. In the following sections of this paper the factors contributing to the high average advance rates achieved by South African shaft sinkers are discussed. It is difficult, if not impossible, to estimate the effect of any single factor, in isolation, on the overall sinking achievements. However, the cumulative effect of improvements made in the inter-related activities is, probably, the most important contributor. Although there has not been any single major technical change or innovation to shaft sinking practices in the last decade, the average sinking speeds have increased, due to improved application and technical improvements in established procedures. 2. GENERAL When discussing South African shaft sinking techniques and average sinking rates compared to those achieved in other parts of the world, it should be remembered that the size and depth of South African shafts are often considerably greater than in most other countries. INTRODUCTION In 1979 the Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health of the Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) defined a programme of work needed to improve radon dosimetry and monitoring. A Group of Experts in this field was established by the NEA and at the first meeting of the Group the authors were designated an initial task with the following terms of reference:- To review dosimetry of radon, thoron and their daughters, and in particular:- - to examine analytical models for the assessment of dose to individuals who are exposed to aerosol mixtures of these nuclides; - to examine the state of knowledge of the characteristics of aerosol mixtures of these nuclides and other factors that influence the dose to the lung, and identify those parameters which should be measured for dosimetric purposes in radiological surveillance programmes; - to identify areas where further study or research are needed. In this presentation we attempt to examine, with these objectives, the relationship between exposure to radon and thoron daughter aerosols expressed in terms of the working level month l (WLM), or its SI equivalent, and dose accumulated by sensitive tissues of the lower respiratory tract. Over the past two decades many attempts have been made to calculate the lung dose equivalent to l WLM exposure in mine atmospheres, usually in terms of the maximum dose to basal cells in a small part of the bronchial tree. The calculations have employed variously detailed models of airway anatomy, aerosol deposition, ciliary clearance and dosimetry of tissue at the bronchial surface, and are well reviewed elsewhere (Walsh, 1970; UNSCEAR, 1977; Jacobi, 1977; Fry, 1977). They agree in the conclusion that basal cells in segmental bronchi (between about the third and fifth bronchial generations) receive the highest dose, although estimates of this dose differ by more than an order of magnitude, ranging from about 0.2 to 12 rads per WLM (2 mGy to 120 mGy). The most critical parameters of these models are the assumed depths of basal cells below the bronchial surface and the fraction of the WL carried by free ions. When more realistic values of these parameters are substituted (Jacobi, 1977), the dispersion in calculated maximum doses to basal cells is reduced to give a much smaller range from about 0.3 to 1 rad/WLM (3 to 10 mGy/WLM). The parameters and methods employed in these various models, however, remain too diverse to infer the sensitivity of the dose conversion to practical variations in aerosol characteristics and the additional factors determining lung deposition and clearance. We have therefore taken the approach of developing newer models (Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980; James et al, 1980) that can encompass the range of available experimental data on the physical and biological behaviour of radon and thoron daughters and also accommodate the different interpretations that can be put upon them. In 2016, a 3.7-ML magnitude event caused by mining activity occurred at a longwall mine in southwestern Virginia which was recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and felt by local residents. The event was the largest of its kind since a global mine design change by the operator was instituted in 2008 following three large events in 2005, 2006 and 2007 (3.4, 4.3, and 3.4, respectively). Two of the three pre-2008 events (2005 and 2007) damaged ventilation controls in the mine which fueled a mine fire. In 2016 the mine’s management requested researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to access geological data and determine what parameters could possibly lead to events of a magnitude of 1.0 ML or greater. The Otjikoto Gold Mine in the Republic of Namibia is located approximately 300 kilometers north of the capital city of Windhoek. The project features surface mining with a modern gravity/carbon-in-pulp mill for ore treatment and recovery of gold. Initial mill design capacity was 2.5 million tonne per annum but then expanded after 9 months of operation to 3.1 million tonne per annum. The technical steps to establish the Otjikoto mill design from process selection in the due diligence stage, through flowsheet development in the feasibility study followed by detailed engineering design are reviewed in this paper along with mill performance during start-up and in 2019.

In every business today costs come under almost microscopic scrutiny. It's hard to conceive that less than 30 years ago there was no such cost consciousness apparent in overall industry. Railroads, through their almost absolute monopoly on freight handling, were one of the industries where little thought was given to overall costs. True regulation kept rates in line, but railroads did very little in the area of supplying equipment intended to help the shipper minimize his costs and at the same time result in savings to the rail carrier. During this period, except for isolated cases, railroads placed standard cars for loading. Most railroad car fleets consisted of box cars, hopper cars, flat cars and low side gondola cars certain roads having unique movements developed special cars to accommodate the particular product, but seldom did these cars move in general interchange service. Most of you are aware that several large companies built railroads of their own as an integral part of raw materials handling from remote sources to production plants located near concentrations of usage. On these railroads special cars were built with little thought to inter-change service. Examples of such railroads are the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range, the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern, the Union Railroad, the Bessemer and Lake Erie and the Birmingham Southern.

The Inland Feeder project is a critical component of Southern California’s water delivery system, relying on a strategic plan of water transfer and storage to enable the delivery of an additional 650 million gallons of water a day. The Arrowhead West and Arrowhead East tunnels form part of this system, comprising the construction of nearly13 km (8 miles) of bored tunnel under the San Bernardino National Forest. This paper describes the design and manufacture of the 4.88 m (16 ft) diameter precast segmental primary lining that will be used in these tunnels to resist rock loads, and up to 275 m (900 ft) of external hydrostatic head.

Capital investments are made for a variety of purposes, from providing incremental capacity at existing operations to developing and implementing new technologies intended to radically improve a company's capabilities. These projects generate very different business opportunities and create value in distinctive ways. For incremental improvements, the capital budgeting process assures at least a loose fit between short-term goals and readily available resources. However, the criteria used to evaluate capital projects often prevent a company from committing to more aggressive goals that lie beyond the firm's current abilities or resources. Such projects may not have clearly identifiable future cash flows, and the degree of interaction with other projects and the nature of the risk incurred may be difficult to estimate. Additionally, by focusing only on quantifiable benefits, the budgeting process often fails to recognize "soft" improvements such as increased operating flexibility or new knowledge generated by such projects. By rejecting these projects, the capital budgeting process may actually harm the company's future competitive position.

"Antioquia region, in Colombia, is considered one of the areas with the highest mercury contamination in the world due to its use in gold recovery through artisanal mining, emissions to the environment between 100 and 150 tonnes of mercury are estimated by year. Therefore it became necessary to develop a project in which it was proposed aim to empower traditional artisanal mining community, or in different areas, such as gold mining in the region of Antioquia, in the implementation of safe mining practices and environmentally sustainable, from the introduction of clean technologies, in order to prevent or mitigate the impacts generated by traditional mining on the environment and the communities involved. In order to achieve this training to traditional mining community developed and technical visits to artisanal mining were performed in order to optimize operating processes and promote safe mining practices. In the project more than 1400 artisanal miners were trained.INTRODUCTION In the developing world, a combined 30 million individuals extract more than 30 different minerals using rudimentary techniques. Gold is the preferred mineral extracted by artisanal operators due to its high unit value and its market price, which has increased almost sevenfold over the last decade (Veiga et al, 2014). The artisanal gold mining sector in Colombia has 200,000 miners officially producing 30 tonnes Au/a. In the Northeast of the Department of Antioquia, there are 17 mining towns and between 15,000 and 30,000 artisanal gold miners (M. Veiga, 2010) (Upme, 2014). This production, however, has caused environmental problems, including high levels of river siltation and mercury pollution (Veiga et al, 2014) (UPME, 2007) (Cordy et al., 2013). The mercury contamination in Colombia by artisanal gold mining has been recognized by a number of researchers and local authorities for over a decade estimated that the annual mercury emissions from artisanal gold miners in Colombia in 2007 were between 50 and 100 tonnes, however given recent gold value increases and gold rush activity, current mercury emissions are likely much higher. Colombia is likely the world's 3rd largest source of mercury emissions from AGM after China (240 to 650 tonnes of Hg/a) and Indonesia (130 to 160 tonnes of Hg/a) (Telmer and Veiga, 2008) and is the world's highest per capita mercury polluter (M. Veiga, 2010)."
