Newmont has been producing gold from the Carlin Trend for over 45 years. Naturally the focus, scale and complexity of the operations have changed considerably over this time. Newmont discovered and developed the Carlin Main ore body which is located about 32 km (20 miles) north of Carlin Nevada. The property was developed as a one mine one gold mill treatment plant operation which produced about 6,200 kg (200,000 Troy ounces) of dorè gold bars per year. The initial mine, mill and gold refining facilities were relatively small in comparison to today?s standards. The milling circuit used the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process to recover dissolved gold and prepare a concentrated precious metal ?precipitate? to be melted into a dorè bar for sale.

The requirements of the International Mineral Property Valuation Standards Template (IMVAL Template) (includes Petroleum), 4th edition of April 14, 2021, are based on six principles: 2.1.1 competence, 2.1.2 materiality, 2.1.3 transparency, 2.1.4 objectivity, 2.1.5 independence, and 2.1.6 reasonableness. The IMVAL Template describes “reasonableness” as, “The Valuer must ensure the Reasonableness of the Valuation. Any Valuation, assumptions applied, and any method relied upon should be reasonable within the context of the purpose of the Valuation and the Basis of Value. A method applied to the subject Mineral Property should be within the expected capability and consideration of an assumed likely buyer or lessee of the property.” The IMVAL Template’s Guidance 3.6 on Reasonableness states, “The test of Reasonableness is to consider what appropriately qualified and experienced Valuers, acting reasonably, would conclude in the circumstances. The Valuer must form an opinion that is reasonable in the circumstances, that is, what a Valuer believes is rational and plausible in the circumstances and would be viewed as such if considered by other appropriately qualified and experienced Valuers with the same information and at the same time.” Finally, the IMVAL Template’s Definition 4.26 states Reasonableness “[m]eans that other qualified and experienced Valuers with access to the same information for the same Valuation Date and Basis of Value would consider the Valuer's estimate of Value to be within a reasonable range.”

During 1982 Ash Grove Cement Company contracted with Wagester, Walker, Thornton & Company to convert a Calcimatic rotating hearth kiln at its Portland, Oregon lime plant from gas/oil to coal firing. Increasing costs of natural gas and No. 6 fuel oil made this conversion mandatory if the plant was to remain competitive. Unique features of this project are 1) the distributors of pulverized coal to eighteen small burners around the inner and outer perimeters of the doughnut-shaped kiln, and 2) the attrition-dryer-pulverizer mill. Ash Grove, a century-old lime and cement producer headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas (Kansas City area), looked at various schemes for multiple burner firing before employing Wagester, Walker, Thornton & Company. W.W.T. of Pitts- burgh, Pennsylvania was formed in 1980 by acquiring the Solid Fuels Division of the Pullman Swindell Corporation. This division had been active in developing solid fuel firing for brick tunnel kilns, principally in the Southeast. They continue to supply such systems firing wood waste as well as coal to the brick industry and have also converted two Calcimatic lime kilns for Dixie Lime, Sumterville, Florida, a fluid bed calciner for Texas Gulf in Aurora, North Carolina, and a chrome concentrate kiln for Diamond Chemicals at Castle Hayne, North Carolina. Testing and a proposal have been made for INMETCO, Elwood City, Pennsylvania, on an annular hearth furnace for direct reduction of iron ore to metallic iron.

The Coal supply and demand review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. In 1991, the US coal industry produced 902 Mt (994 million st) of coal, according to preliminary data compiled by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table 1). This amount was 32 Mt (35 million st) less than the record 933.5 Mt (1 billion st) produced in 1990. Most of the decrease in coal production occurred east of the Mississippi River. The substantial stock buildup that stimulated production in 1990 was not repeated in 1991. In addition, coal consumption by electric utilities and coke plants dropped by about 1.8 Mt and 4.5 Mt (2 million and 5 million st), respectively. Moreover, a higher level of coal exports failed to bolster the 1991 production. Production Surface mines accounted for about 59% of the 902 Mt (994 million st) of coal produced in 1991. Underground mines produced for 41%. More than one-fourth of the total coal output was from federal and Indian coal leases. Production of all ranks of coal, except subbituminous, declined in 1991. Bituminous coal is produced mainly in the East. It totaled an estimated 590 Mt (651 million st), a 6% decrease. Production of subbituminous coal, mostly in the West, rose 3% to a record 228 Mt (252 million st). Lignite output was from Texas and North Dakota. It decreased by 1 % to 79 Mt (87 million st). Anthracite production, all from eastern Pennsylvania, fell by 17% to 2.7 Mt (3 million st).

Over the last six years I have been involved with the calculation of ore reserves and mine planning using various computer systems and soft- ware packages. This experience has given me a unique perspective from which to view the needs of the engineers and geologists whose job it is to produce geologic and mineable ore reserves. The purpose of this paper is to share that perspective with those who are in this field or are thinking of purchasing computer software to aid in these calculations. My first experience with computers in mining was the creation of a mini-computer based coal reserve and mine planning package written as part of my Easter's thesis. This package took about ten weeks to write, four weeks to document, and two weeks to install at the mine for which it was written. It did what it was designed to do, which was to emulate the hand procedure which had been used prior to its installation. The package was specific to its application which involved several small seams of coal being mined simultaneously and would have required major modification for it to be applied to a mine where, say, one thick seam was mined in two benches.

Next month, American Commercial Barge Line Company will begin moving coal from mines on the old Camp Breckinridge property in Western Kentucky to TVA's new 2600 MW steam plant at Cumberland City, Tennessee. By April of 1973, this movement will reach a level of 7,000,000 tons per year. TVA bought the coal rights to this property from the General Services Administration in 1965 for approximately $7 million. The reserve contains about 120 million tons of recoverable No.9 coal, and about the same recover-able amount of No. 11 coal. TVA then contracted through competitive bidding with Peabody Coal Company to mine the No.9 seam through two slope shafts. The mines are about 300 feet deep and are separated by the one major fault on this property. The mine portals are approximately 3-1/2 miles apart, with the northern portal being over nine miles distant from the Ohio River (see Figure No.1). In 1969 TV A took bids on alternate methods for transporting 120 million tons of coal to Cumberland City at seven million tons per year. These alter-natives included overland transportation to the Ohio River by rail or conveyor, water transportation from Union County, Kentucky to Cumberland City, and total transportation packages from Camp Breckinridge to Cumberland City. The latter could be a joint land/water package, or all land (rail). Ultimately American Commercial Barge Line was awarded an $88 million package transportation contract to convey the coal from Camp Breckinridge to Uniontown, Kentucky; to store it at Uniontown in a quantity sufficient to allow ratable delivery to the steam plant; and to barge from Uniontown to Cumberland City via the Ohio and Cumberland Rivers.

High-grade uranium ores of Cluff Lake and Key Lake mines from the province of Saskatchewan in Canada are treated with nitric and hydrochloric acids with the objective of leaching 230 Th and 226Ra simultaneously with uranium to produce environmentally safe mill tailings, h is found that optimum conditions for uranium leaching are 50°C, 4 h, 30% solids in leach slurry and an acid concentration of 1 mol/L for HNO, for both the ores. In the case of HCl, a 3 mol/L acid concentration is needed and addition of an oxidant is required because otherwise 230Th and 226Ra extractions remain poor.

During its modem era, the southern Powder River Basin (PRB) in Wyoming has grown from meager origins in the early 1970s to become one of the most important coal-producing regions in the United States. In 1993, production and sales of southern Powder River Basin coal exceeded 190 Mt (209 million st), or about 20% of the US coal industry. Despite the remote location of the PRB relative to its potential markets, most coal industry observers anticipate continued strong growth to meet utility compliance plans for Phases I and II of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA). This article is an overview of supply and demand issues concerning the marketing of southern PRB coal. It reviews the events leading up to the recent run on spot coal and offers a forecast of demand and prices.

The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. The Coal Creek Preparation Plant is the coal cleaning facility of Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company. Located three miles west of Redstone, Colorado, and at an elevation of 8,040 feet the preparation plant cleans coal produced at the company's Dutch Creek Mine and L. S. Wood Mine. (See Fig.1.) Current production is at the rate of 2500 tons per day clean coal. Plant capacity is rated 350 TPH raw coal. Reject rates vary with mining conditions from 8% to 25%. Factors which influenced the design of the coal cleaning facility were the characteristics of the coal, the location in a tourist oriented resort area, and the extreme winters of the area. Lack of areas suitable for settling ponds and the necessity of keeping effluent waters out of the fishing streams dictated a closed circuit plant. Severe winter conditions, which last six to seven months out of the year and temperatures which have dropped to 40° F. below zero on occasions demanded that the plant be totally insulated and enclosed indoors.

The Bokan Mountain area on Prince of Wales Island, AK, contains vast quantities of heavy rare earth minerals. To lessen the US dependence on foreign sources, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated yttrium recovery from this ore. By sulfating the ore at 250 ° C for 1 hr at an H2S04:ore ratio of 1:1 and then water leaching the sulfated material for 1 hr at 20% solids and 25ºC, over 74% of the yttrium, cerium, and lanthanum were solubilized. Solvent extraction (SX), using a synergistic combination of OPAP and DEHPA, selectively loaded 100% of the yttrium. Yttrium was stripped directly as a solid using a 2M, 35 ° C NaOH liquor. When the OPAP/DEHPA mixture was tested in a continuous SX circuit, yttrium loading and stripping were 100% and 96%, respectively. The organic showed excellent recyclability properties with minimal solvent loss.

The Lucerne Valley Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division of Chas. Pfizer & Co., Inca, are located about 5 miles south of the town of Lucerne Valley, California. These operations consist of several limestone quarries, a whiting plant which produces finely pulverized limestone products, a-kiln which produces granular quicklime and lime products, and maintenance shops, warehousing, shipping, and office facilities. Construction of the Lucerne Valley plant began in 1961 as the result of a decision to utilize large undeveloped reserves of limestone in that area. Quarry development was started in the following year; and by 1965, Lucerne Valley had become the principle limestone and lime facility of the Western Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division.

The key objective of forming a cartel is to increase profits to members of the cartel by taking the following action: a) control output; and b) control price. However, while attempting to obtain monopoly profits the cartel members have to contend with costs associated with cartelization and such costs include the following: political costs; the cost of coordinating output and price; organizational costs (such as cheating); and administrative costs (such as the cost of attending cartel meetings). The objective of commodity exchanges is to provide an open, free market where buyers and sellers may openly complete transactions and pricing information can be immediately disseminated. These transactions include the following: a) to provide facilities for "hedging", or transferring price risk from buyers and sellers of physical commodities to "speculators" through the medium of buying and selling futures contracts, and b) taking physical delivery of metal on due dates.

To mine safely and efficiently the working conditions must be systematically de¬fined. Their uniqueness distinguishes mining from other engineering professions. The worst case in underground mining is delineated and termed "encumbered space'", since it "seriously impedes motion or action." Working space is inherently hazardous, transitory, and expensive, inducing it to be of low quality, tight and congested, vulnerable and deteriorating, and isolated and inaccessible. These adverse conditions, are damaging to cumbersome, mobile equipment, and affect all activities, including surface work. The conditions are reorganized using the fundamental engineering dimensions: space, matter time, people, and money. Comprehensive tables are presented with attention paid to "disaster potentials". Examples are cited.

Carbonate-hosted massive sulfide (60%) ores of the western Cordillera compose a distinct class of deposits although they vary widely in detail and perhaps genesis. They have been important sources of lead, zinc, copper, silver, gold, and more rarely, molybdenum, tin, and tungsten in complex mineral assemblages usually dominated by pyrite. They occur as concordant stratiform bodies, as discordant mantos, and as chimneys crossing tens of meters of section; many are associated with faults and breccia bodies. Environments of formation of carbonate hosts range from craton basin to shelf with ages from Proterozoic to Cretaceous; in many instances, dating has shown mineralization to be significantly younger than hosts. Temperatures of formation determined for many deposits are high (200°-400°) and many districts are centers of igneous activity manifested by dikes, sills, and stocks. However, direct cause and effect relationships have been difficult to establish. Many important problems attend the renewed interest and study of these deposits and include questions of metal-sulfur sources, metallization processes and histories, geological controls at all scales, and relationships to broader patterns of metallogeny.

Regression analysis of calculated on measured displacements were used to assess the influence of fill and fold plunge on shaft pillar mining at the Homestake Mine. These effects were neglected in the original three-dimensional finite element analysis undertaken in 1991. An average fold plunge of 15? and a 24K fill (Young’ modulus of 24,000 psi or 165 Mpa) were used in the reanalysis. Measured displacements were obtained from an array of 36 m (120 ft) multiple-position borehole extensometers installed in June 1994 and read to March 2003. Results indicate the effects of both on calculated displacements and thus on regression parameters are noticeable. However, these neglected effects would not have changed the original inference of Ross Shaft stability during pillar mining.

How best to grind? This article compares conventional crushing and grinding circuits to semiautogenous circuits, reviews recent installations of each circuit, and describes seven methods of using autogenous or semiautogenous techniques. In addition, steel and power consumption data are reported and benefits of a dedicated digital computer are discussed. Size reduction is the most expensive operation in most mills. Crushing and grinding are usually the greatest part of capital costs. They often make up 60-70% of total mill operating costs. Picking the proper crushing and grinding method must, therefore, be done with great care, so the best circuit is chosen. In the past 10 years, there has been a strong trend toward using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding in mills throughout the world. Autogenous grinding is favored when the ore is quite competent and a fine grind is needed. Semiautogenous grinding is applied when fine crushing could cause severe problems or when ore varies in hardness or competency. The taconite iron ores of northern Minnesota fit the description for an autogenously ground ore and many are successfully ground that way. Most im¬pressive are the nine lines of 11 x 4.9 m (36 x 16 ft) mills powered by 9 MW (12,000 hp) motors at Hibbing Taconite. Porphyry copper and molybdenum ores fit the description for semiautogenous grinding. Recent installations include Highmont in British Columbia, Canada, and Quintana in New Mexico. Sampling Many mills have been built based on inadequate sampling data or insufficient tests. With the cost of many mills exceeding several hundred million dollars, it is mandatory that geologists, mining engineers, and metallurgists work together to prepare representative testing samples. Simple, repeatable work index tests are usually sufficient for rod and ball mill tests. However, pilot plant tests on 50-100 t (55-110 tons) of ore are frequently necessary for autogenous or semiautogenous mills. Preparation and selection of the test sample is of utmost importance. Procedures for autogenous and semiautogenous mill pilot plant tests are relatively simple for those experienced in running them. Reliable and repeatable results can be obtained if simple, fundamental procedures are followed. The accompanying figure shows a typical conventional crushing-grinding circuit with three stages of crushing followed by ball mills or a rod mill-ball mill combination. This flowsheet is typical of many mills that have been built throughout the world. Also shown is a typical semiautogenous (SAG) circuit with feed coming directly from a primary crusher, and the semiautogenous mill product going to the separation process. Many similar semiautogenous circuits are built today because they are simple and flexible, lend themselves readily to high tonnages, and usually cost less to build and operate. With some ores, it is possible to send mine-run ore directly to the semiautogenous mill, eliminating the need for a primary crusher, as at Benquet's Dizon mill in the Philippines. An autogenous or semiautogenous circuit, as the name implies, uses the ore itself to assist in the grinding process. Generally, for this type of circuit, the ore must be competent so large ore chunks can be used to grind smaller ones. If ore alone is used, then the circuit is autogenous; but if balls are added to supplement the charge, then the circuit is termed semiautogenous. Ore competency is not always a criterion, to break up large pieces and wash away cementing material. Autogenous and semiautogenous mills have been very successful on relatively soft uranium ores where the values are frequently found in the material that cements together the sandstone grains. The use of a series of thickeners for-washing of the slime fraction of a leached ore is not uncommon in the uranium industry; however, few ore processing mills have used a thickener circuit for washing leached total ore. The, common, practice is to wash the sand fraction in classifiers and, the slime fraction only in thickeners. At the Uravan mill of Union Carbide Nuclear, Company, a total ore' acid leach is employed to extract uranium values from sandstone ores. These leached ores are then washed at a nominal rate of from 1,000 to 1,300 tons per day in a series of washing thickeners. A typical screen. analysis of the ore being washed in these thickeners, is 25 percent -200 mesh, 3 percent +35 mesh and about, one' percent +l4 mesh., The amount of slimes (-200 mesh) will vary from 20 to 30 percent s the mill receives ore from 150 different mines The washing liquor is acidic, from a pH of about 2 in the first thickener to 0.6 pH in the last thickener and of course ally acid duty equipment must be used. The Uravan mill of Union Carbide Nuclear Company is located in Montrose County, Colorado and is physically located on a canyon wall along the San Miguel river. The thickeners referred to in this, paper are located on top of the mesa above the canyon. For purposes of identification, these thickeners are numbered 1 through 8 from south to north.

Guided seismic wave propagation was studied in the Lower Freeport (6A) coal seam in the Oak Park No. 7 mine near Cadiz, OH. Three component geophones were implanted in the coal at distances ranging from 72 m to 183 m from the seismic source. Both Love- and Rayleigh-type modes were observed but the Love-type mode produced the best data. Detailed analysis was performed on the best Love data and a Dziewonski map of group velocity vs. frequency was constructed. This map was in excellent agreement with a theoretical dispersion curve calculated for a model of the coal seam. The Love wave group velocity was found to have a minimum value of 510 m/sec at 275 Hz. Only the fundamental mode contributed significantly to the observed signal and it was observed up to the maximum distance available.
