These materials include a formal sustainability report prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines (GRI, 2006), a report that outlines key SD challenges and progress toward the GRI targets, and a delineation of risks and opportunities outlined in the firm?s Form 10-K and Annual Report. In keeping with its commitments to SD targets, our client wished to consider SD issues in its decision processes for facility expansion or new projects. Conveyors are a highly effective means of transporting material over long distances. Recently there has been a trend toward long conveyor systems with high capacity single flights. These conveyor systems are an efficient alternative to costly truck fleets. Also with deeper mines, the use of diesel driven trucks becomes more difficult. Another trend is in underground mining, where conveyors are an efficient alternative to drift hoists or dedicated rail systems.

"Construction of the largest desalinization plant in the Americas has commenced in northern Chile. It is part of a several billion dollar expansion at a copper mine whose operations nearly stopped due to the challenge of securing a reliable source of water from the Pacific Ocean in a safe and environmentally sound manner. This paper discusses the risk management, design and construction of a quadruple chamber intake and outfall shaft, high capacity pump station, three 7m diameter vertically drilled marine shafts and three subsea tunnels constructed through challenging Andean hard-rock geology. The three 2.5m diameter subsea microtunnels are being mined with vertical curves through variable quality rock 30 meters beneath the ocean and retrieved in the wet from the 7m diameter marine shafts. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The battle for securing the rights to a constant water supply is a worldwide issue and nowhere is that more evident than the Atacama Desert of Chile, the world’s driest place with areas of the desert that have not seen rainfall in recorded history. The Atacama Desert also happens to be home to some of the world’s largest ore deposits which require huge amounts of water to extract and process. What available water there is comes from three main sources: deep seated wells, glacial water from the Andes Mountains, and desalinated water. Vying for water from wells and glacial streams and lakes are numerous agricultural and domestic facilities in the valleys surrounding the Atacama Desert. Environmental regulations and legal rulings have limited the amount of “natural” source water which can be used for mining purposes. Desalination plants are a known solution for combating water scarcity, albeit a costly one. The total estimated cost of constructing this desalination plant is over $3B USD, which will include a 2500lps capacity and an approximately 118km pipeline from the coast up to the mine located in the Andes. The overall scope of the project includes design, procurement, and construction packages for the 2500lps desalination plant including the seawater reverse osmosis plant, water conveyance to the mine, power transmission, the reservoir and the marine works package which forms the basis of this paper. How is the Government's oil import control program doing? In July 1954 Mr, Eisenhower established the Cabinet Committee on Energy Supplies and Resources Policy. On July 29, 1957, the Administration imposed "voluntary" company oil import quotas on American oil importers to maintain "a healthy domestic (oil) production industry" and safeguard "national security." On March 10, 1959 the President by proclamation made the voluntary program mandatory. But study of the program in practice shows that it is not working out as expected and-that there is some doubt that its aims and other related Administration purposes are being achieved. Take the Administration's anti-inflation policy. To be sure, the President apparently recognized in his March 10th proclamation that in restricting cheap imported oil in favor of more expensive-domestic oil he was making the inflation fight that much harder, for he called for Government surveillance of domestic oil prices to prevent them from getting out of hard, And indeed while domestic crude oil prices have not risen appreciably during 1959 neither have they fallen appreciably (although there has been some price weakness in the past few weeks).

Metal prices are often predicted by relying on time trend projections of various economic indicators or even the trend in price itself Thus, time is the underlying explanatory variable acting through at best, a limited selection of economic variables. The price prediction method described in this paper differs from this by analyzing hundreds of economic variables to develop a few principle components that automatically capture the fundamental changes in the economy and delete duplicate or irrelevant information. This leaves a few principle variables to describe a state-space representation of the economy which can then be used for prediction. Forecasts of the price of a metal are then made based on these principle variables.

Alunite (KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6] is one of the important nonbauxitic resources for aluminum in U.S.A. The major gangue material associated with a unite ore body is quartz. Experimental results indicate that oleic acid flotation of alunite is quite effective in upgrading the ore. The flotation chemistry of the alunite/oleate system has been investigated using various techniques such as: hallimond tube flotation response, measurement of adsorption density using I4C labeled oleated, electrokinetic measurements, infrared spectral studies, contact angle measurements and thermochemical measurements using an isothermal microcalorimeter. Alunite has been found to float readily with oleate in the pH range 4-10.5 and its flotation response is enhanced at higher temperatures. The PZC of alunite has been determined to be at pH 7.2 ± 0.15 which agrees with what would be predicted from solution chemistry and from the flotation response with physically adsorbed collectors. Infrared spectra show a specific peak in the range 1585-1600 cm-1 which has been attributed to the formation of an aluminum oleate surface species. Both adsorption density measurements and infrared spectra indicate that during adsorption multilayers are formed. The heat of adsorption of oleate on alunite has been found to be endothermic and of the order of 4-6 KJ/ mole.

"Current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) risk models and asbestos fiber counting techniques for monitoring airborne exposures treat all fibers as being equivalent and ignore the effect of dimension on toxicity. While this may have been appropriate when modern analytical methods were not available, the measurement world is now fully capable of making the appropriate distinctions. The importance of width as a determinant of carcinogenicity has been recognized for nearly 30 years within the published literature. Stanton,1 in a landmark study of a suite of fibrous materials, found that durable mineral fibers with widths less than 0.25 mm and lengths longer than 8 mm were causally associated with the induction of tumors. Pott,2 in a later study, postulated a fiber toxicity model that agreed reasonably well with the Stanton findings, but extended the concept to include varying toxicity as a function of length and width. Wylie et al.3 reanalyzed samples used by Davis et al.4 and found that tumor generation was strongly and inversely correlated with fiber width. Crump5 testified increasing fiber length was correlated with disease occurrence. Lippman6 reviewed a number of studies and suggested that mesothelioma was closely associated with long, thin fibers. Berman et al.7 published a risk model, which found that disease was correlated almost exclusively with fibers longer than 40 mm and width less than 0.25 mm. Recently, Loomis et al.8 reanalyzed textile mill samples and found that aspect ratios greater than 40:1 were highly correlated with disease. Incorporation of width into risk models has been limited by the availability of data from operating asbestos plants and, in particular, the observation of an asbestos plant for which there is no observable mesothelioma. There have been only limited studies published on the dimensions of asbestos fibers, with a few serving as the primary references in other literature.9_13 A rare opportunity to collect detailed concentration and dimensional data of airborne crocidolite from an operating asbestos-cement plant using modern analytical procedures arose, providing a chance to supplement the existing literature on airborne fiber dimensions. The asbestos-cement plant is located in the eastern end of Cochabamba, Bolivia along Highway 4. Cochabamba is a relatively large city located in the Andes Mountains, approximately 250 km southeast of the capital La Paz. The city sits in a valley that runs east-west with mountains to the north and south. The crocidolite used in the products made at this facility is mined in central Bolivia, approximately 75 km northwest of Santa Cruz. The crocidolite is a fibrous magnesioriebeckite 14 (blue asbestos). Crocidolite fibers from Bolivia were the subject of prior reports suggesting the fibers are generally longer and thicker than crocidolite from Australia or South Africa.9 At the cement plant, the run-of-mine crocidolite was first pulverized using a hammer mill and then sieved on vibratory sieves to produce fibers of limited size ranges for use in the cement. The sieved crocidolite is mixed with other components, including recycled cement product, to produce a slurry that is vacuum filtered into sheet form. The sheets are then manually molded into a corrugated shape, air dried, and sawed (using circular saws) to accepted dimensions. The sawed sheets are cured in soaking pits for 28 days before being shipped to the consumer. Prior to shipping, the sheets are finished by a light hand sanding followed (at customer request) by applying one or more coats of paint. An in-seam seismic (ISS) - based void detection technique was developed and tested for three general mine conditions: anthracite, bituminous and trona. The detection range tested varied from 80 to 100 m for trona mines and from 33 to 66 m for bituminous mines. High quality and broad band signals were obtained from these tests and were used to delineate the voids. The paper provides a brief discussion on the technical features of this void detection technique, the testing conditions and results, and a general assessment of the technique.

Cost control is a lot like motherhood - everyone proclaims its need and its worthiness, but is it really appreciated and used to successfully complete a project on time and within budget? Good Cost Control is a yardstick - requiring fixed definition but this does not mean rigidity for the project. It provides the means for telling: 1. Where you are going 2. When you will complete and 3. What it will finally cost. Cost Control does not fix the price of dreams nor the cost of projects loosely defined. It does not control costs in itself but provides the tools whereby engineering decisions can be made which will ultimately affect the project cost It does not even guarantee that a project will be completed within the original funds - but only, if this reflects management desires.

"Cast blasting is the primary means of overburden displacement in a surface coal mine. It serves two purposes; fragmenting the rock and throwing it directly to its spoil pile using explosive energy. Increased throw minimizes costs by reducing the amount of material that needs to be rehandled. Prior studies have shown that by only changing blasthole timing with the same blast design, fragmentation and throw alter. It is necessary in cast blasting to optimize both fragmentation and throw, since larger fragments will require more wasted energy to throw the same distance. In an operating mine in Georgia, an optimum interhole delay for fragmentation has been found by studying timings from 0 millisecond (ms) to 45 ms. Instantaneous timing between holes increased the throw by more than 31 m (100 ft), but fragmentation was poor. Shock and detonation wave collision is a potential reason for this increased throw.Explosives are utilized extensively by the mining industry in order to break rock, as either ore or overburden, for hauling, loading and crushing. An effective production blast strives to achieve optimum rock fragmentation in order to increase the efficiency and reduce the costs of those downstream operations, while simultaneously meeting environmental regulations. The goal of blasting with respect to fragmentation is, according to Hettinger (2015), “to decrease the average particle size of the fragmented rock without overly increasing fines or, in other words, improve fragmentation.”Additionally, the distance the rock is transported by the explosive energy from the blast, also known as throw, can increase efficiency by reducing the amount of material that is rehandled by mine equipment. The primary situation in which this is desirable is the cast blasting of overburden across the narrow pit of a surface coal mine. A key variable in a blast design pattern that can be manipulated to optimize both fragmentation and throw is delay timing between detonations. The invention and increased utilization of electronic detonators have allowed for precise delay timings to be used between rows, holes and even multiple primers within the same hole. These recent developments in the blasting community have also provided an opportunity to investigate whether or not the mechanism of shock or detonation wave collisions caused by short timing delays are responsible for any increased fragmentation or throw. This experiment attempts to demonstrate if an increase in throw can be achieved while maintaining optimum fragmentation."

This paper reports on the behavior of mercury and its compounds during the thiosulfate leaching and recovery of gold. Thiosulfate solutions are shown to dissolve Hg0 and Hg2Cl2 to a similar extent as cyanide, but the leaching of HgS is significantly slower in thiosulfate solutions compared to cyanide. Hence, the use of thiosulfate may be an option for treating ores containing high levels of cinnabar, especially since the legislation concerning the discharge or sale of mercury is becoming more restrictive. The deportment of mercury during gold thiosulfate loading and recovery using a strongly basic anion-exchange resin was also studied. Although the mercury thiosulfate complex loads on the resin, the adsorption is weaker than for gold, with an equilibrium constant between gold and mercury of 51. Resin loaded with gold, mercury and copper was pre-eluted with thiosulfate (to remove copper) and eluted with a chloride and sulfite eluant. The majority of the mercury is eluted by the eluant and, hence, its deportment closely follows gold and the eluate would need to be treated to remove either mercury dur-ing or prior to gold electrowinning.

A study was conducted to examine the potential of diesel emissions control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with exhaust aftertreatment devices and repowering with advanced power packages. The retrofit systems, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), were evaluated individually using a US EPA tier 2 (ter 2) engine operated under four steady-state conditions and one transient cycle. The DOC effectively curtailed emissions of CO, and to some extent organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and aerosol number concentration. The DPF system offered substantially higher reductions in OC and EC mass and aerosol number concentrations. Both, the DOC and DPF achieved reductions in the aforementioned emissions without adversely affecting emissions of NO2 and nano-sized aerosols. The strategy of repowering with an advanced system was examined using a US EPA tier 4 final (tier 4f) engine equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel exhaust fluid-based selective catalytic reduction system, but not with a DPF system. The tier 4f engine contributed substantially less than the tier 2 engine to the EC and OC mass, aerosol number, and CO, NO, and NO2 concentrations. The tier 4f engine was very effective in reducing aerosol mass, NO, and NO2 concentrations, but it was not equally effective in reducing aerosol number concentrations. The implementation of viable exhaust after treatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental to the underground mining industry to secure a clean, economical, and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

The heavy media process is now being used extensively throughout the world for the gravity concentration of a great number of different minerals. The process is a commercial adaptation of the heavy liquid procedure which has been used in laboratories for many years to separate mineral of different specific gravities. In the heavy media process, a suspension of finely divided particles in water is used to increase the apparent specific weight of the fluid to the desired separating point. The original heavy media process used sand, galena, pyrite and occasionally other materials as the solid constituent of the separating suspensions. As the process developed, the need for a more universal media meeting the following requirements was recognized: 1. High specific gravity. 2. Resistance to abrasion. 3. Resistance to corrosion, 4. Readily reduced to a suitable size consist for suspension in water. 5. Available in quantity at economical price levels. 6. Easy to recover by a simple method.

"THE CHALLENGE The 14km long, Arlbergtunnel, closed for public traffic during summer 2015, receiving a comprehensive and substantial renovation from 2015 to 2017. The main works discussed here, carried out during 2015, comprise 37 drill and blast SEM/NATM emergency escape tunnels from road level to the ventilation duct plenum have to be constructed as well as eight additional lay-by niches and three transformer tunnels. This presentation comprises the construction ventilation design, designed according to national regulations, suitable for 150 employees working 24/7 simultaneously at more than 40 single working sites lined up along the tunnel. The ventilation-system chosen was utilising two existing shafts for intake/discharge and a cross passage to surface, to handle a total fan power of 1.600kW. DESCRIPTION OF RENOVATION WORKS Linking Tyrol and Vorarlberg, two Federal States of Austria, the Arlbergtunnel is a single tube two-way road tunnel with vent duct plenum, constructed in the mid-1970s. According to latest EU legislation, additional escape exits have become obligatory. The existing seven cross passage links to the adjacent Arlberg Railway Tunnel, with average spacing of about 1.500m constructed in 2007, an additional upgrade to shorter escape spaces of approx. 400m was now required to comply with the updated legislation. Additional transformer tunnels, lay-by niches and small niches for emergency maintenance use, cleaning and other purposes, as well as a the installation of a new fire main in the invert, coupled with the simultaneous replacement of virtually the entire power and signaling cables, generated several dozen small and large single sites distributed along the 14km of tunnel.Purpose of the 37 walkable emergency escape tunnels is to reach the “upper deck” of the Arlbergtunnel, the vent duct plenum. These have an 180deg curve in plan, inclined at 10% and approx. 60m (65yd) long tunnels, excavated using drill and blast method starting from road level and working upwards to the level of an “intermediate soffit”, the vent duct plenum in the crown of the tunnel. The vent duct plenum is separated into a fresh air part and an exhaust air part, shown in Figure 1. The escape tunnels end with a pressure door in the fresh air section of the ventilation duct plenum. From there illuminated signs show the shortest escape route to the safe area between the road tunnel and the railway tunnel, as shown in Figure 2."

The Bureau of Mines has developed a continuous ultrasonic flotation cell for the recovery of Florida phosphate ore. Within a small mixing chamber near the bottom of the flotation cell, an ultrasonic probe agitates an injected mixture of air, water, and phosphate ore and breaks the air into fine bubbles. Phosphate particles are preferentially attached to these fine bubbles and floated in the main chamber of the flotation cell. Over 94 pct of the phosphate was recovered, resulting in a 30 pct P205 concentrate. The ultrasonic energy consumption was less than 7 kW.h/mt of phosphate ore.

It hardly needs to be repeated that if coal is to continue as America’s premier source of cheap energy, it is absolutely necessary that the carbon dioxide from its combustion somehow be sequestered. A promising method proposed to accomplish this is the “indirect” carbonation of serpentine in a concentrated magnesium chloride brine. Indirect carbonation could be also applied to precipitate magnesium in lateritic nickel processing: this would not only solve magnesium-control problems in laterite hydrometallurgy, but also reduce its energy requirements and create CO2-sequestration credits. Fifty-five percent of the electricity generated in the United States comes from coal-fired power plants, and American coal reserves can last over 500 years at 1990-level consumption1. Coal is therefore both abundant and cheap: it could (and in fact probably will) continue to be an affordable source of energy, both for producing electricity and as a feedstock for liquid hydrocarbon production by Fischer-Tropsch reactions. As a result, it is important to find a workable method of permanently sequestering CO2.

A stream sediment (minus 80-mesh and minus 60-mesh panned concentrates) and lithogeochdcal survey for gold did not locate any Triassic-age placer deposits in the northern Wadesboro and southern Sanford basins in North Carolina. A stream sediment geochemical program for uranium funded by the North Carolina Energy Institute did identify one and anomalous site (8.5 ppm U; 5 ppm Th) near Covenington, North Carolina and eighteen possibly anomalous sites (1-1.6 ppm U) . Five of the eighteen samples with uranium levels in the 1-1.6 ppm range have high thorium levels (112-853 ppm) and may indicate a monazite source for the uranium. Gold values as high as .83 ppm in the stream sediments and 9.3 ppm in the panned concentrates were obtained during the survey. Small (<.5mm) flattened grains of gold (1-4 grains) were observed along with coarse kyanite and/or monazite in some of the panned concentrates. A distinctive pattern of high gold values in the sediments was observed in the vicinity of Mangum, N. C. where Minard (13) reported values as high as 2.1 ppm £ram a Triassic lithology. Follow-up gold analyses on over 400 rock samples from twenty-eight exposures near Mangum failed to obtain any high values (<55 ppb). The presence of coarse kyanite, monazite and gold in panned concentrates may be from a source younger than the Triassic lithologies that the streams currently drain or adjacent Paleozoic rocks.

This report describes research leading to the design, prototype fabrication, and successful in-mine proof-of-concept testing of two improved stench fire warning systems for underground noncoal mines. The stench system, widely used in underground noncoal mines to warn of fire or other emergency suffers several serious shortcomings, including the toxicity of the odorant leading to debility in miners; reactivity of the odorant with iron oxide, resulting in unreliable warning because the odor may fade when transported long distances in steel pipe; lack of control over the rate at which agent is released into the air-stream, resulting in some work areas receiving unbearably high stench concentrations and other areas being missed altogether; lack of visual indication of system status, valve positions, or proper system operation; and excessively long stench transit times. In 1979, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, began research to upgrade the stench warning system. Two systems were subsequently developed which offer significant advantages over current systems.
