The MIDAS project is funded by the European Commission (DG Research) and began on the 1st November 2013. The project will investigate the environmental impact of deep-sea mineral and energy extraction: specifically, polymetallic sulphides, manganese nodules, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts and the potential mining of rare earth elements. As deep-sea mining becomes ever closer, and the International Seabed Authority begins to develop its regulatory framework for exploitation of deep-sea minerals, MIDAS is well timed to provide fundamental scientific information. The MIDAS partnership represents a unique combination of scientists, industry, social scientists, legal experts, nongovernmental organisations and small and medium enterprises. MIDAS is carrying out research into the nature and scales of the potential impacts of mining including 1) physical disturbance of the seabed by mining, the creation of mine tailings; 2) the potential effects of particle-laden plumes in the water column, and 3) the possible toxic chemicals that might be released by the mining process. Key biological unknowns, such as connectivity between populations, impacts of the loss of biological diversity on ecosystem functioning, and how quickly the ecosystems will recover will all be addressed. The plan is to use this information to aid development of recommendations for best practice in the mining industry. A key component is the involvement of industry within the project and through stakeholder engagements to find feasible solutions. The project will work closely with European and international regulatory organisations to take these recommendations forward into legislation. A major element of MIDAS will be to develop methods and technologies for 1) preparing baseline assessments of biodiversity, and 2) monitoring activities remotely in the deep sea during and after exploitation, including ecosystem recovery. To carry out this work MIDAS is conducting a number of research cruises to examine the above issues at potential sites for exploitation of SMS and nodule deposits. This talk will present some of the recent findings of the project.

Determining the number of boulders and cobbles that will be encountered in the tunnel envelope is one of the most difficult problems confronting the geotechnical engineer in the design of tunnels in glacial terrain. This issue is very important to the contractor, both in determining what methods will be used to construct the facilities and the advance rate that can be achieved for the chosen construction methods. The cost of constructing tunnels by pressurized face tunneling techniques is very sensitive to accurate characterization of the very coarse fraction (large cobble and boulder sized clasts), and no standard method is current available for characterizing boulders and cobbles. Careful use of large diameter borings and the sampling and analytical techniques outlined in this paper can provide a means to answer this difficult question. By performing large diameter borings and carefully recording and sampling the cobbles and boulders encountered, an estimate for the amount of these materials present in the formations sampled can be provided. Using this method allows the designer to communicate the expected geologic conditions to the prospective bidders in a manner that is both definitive and defensible. This paper describes the method as it was used in conjunction with the design of a large diameter sewer tunnel in the Columbus, Ohio area.

"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research on jackleg use and related accidents in underground metal mines. This paper provides an analysis and overview of jackleg drill usage, accidents, operational characteristics and alternatives, based on information from injury reports, legacy research, stakeholder input and published literature. The results indicate that jackleg drills are involved in more groundfall accidents in underground metal mines than any other drill, and jackleg-drill-related injuries are most prevalent at the face in the course of installing initial ground support. Practical mechanized alternatives to jackleg drills for drilling and bolting under incomplete support in narrow underground openings have not yet been realized. Small, versatile mechanized bolting equipment needs to be developed to address jackleg-drill-related accidents and improve safety at mines where jackleg drills are being used. IntroductionJackleg drill is a generic name for a handheld, rotary, percussion rock drill equipped with an attached reaction leg to provide stability and thrust (Fig. 1). All of the drill and leg controls are located near the operator’s handle at the rear of the head portion of the drill. Jackleg drills are classified according to the bore size of their pneumatic pistons, which normally range from 6.03 to 8.26 cm (2.375 to 3.25 in.) (Kurt, 1982; Clark, 2012). Jackleg drills typically weigh 46.7 kg (103 lb), but the weight can approach 54.4 kg (120 lb) after being fitted for operation with drill steel and air and water hoses (McKibbin and Clark, 2001). In underground mines, jackleg drills are commonly used to drill 3.8-cm (1.5-in.) diameter holes up to 1.83 m (6 ft) deep in rock."

The purpose of this study was to determine if miners are at risk from exposures to chemicals used in the mining industry, and determine the nature and sources of the illnesses and injuries. The authors reviewed the Mine Safety and Health Administration?s (MSHA) Employment and Accident, Injury, and Illness database and identified 2,705 cases of chemical-related injuries and illnesses that were reported to MSHA from 1999-2006, involving 66 different chemicals. The main source (cause) of chemical-related cases was acids/alkalis (about 39%). The primary nature (effect) of chemical-related cases was chemical burns (about 57%). The job classification where workers incurred the most chemical-related injuries and illnesses was cleaning plant operator/media operator/boney preparation plant operator/crusher worker. The number of nonfatal days lost did not change significantly and overall, the incidence rate of chemical-related cases decreased by 36%. Chemical burns accounted for a large number of injuries; mining companies should carefully examine their personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, training methods, and safety culture to insure that their workers are protected.

Sources of sulfur have varied based on technology and societal needs. It has been mined in its elemental form for centuries. Twentieth century technology brought thermal mining (Frasch, 1894) to the forefront of sulfur extraction. Then, by the 1980s, petroleum processing generated almost 40 percent of the 50 Mt (55million st) of sulfur in all forms (SAF) produced in the world. Metals processing (the reclamation of effluent gas by various means as “sulfur in other forms,” or SOF) followed at 30 percent of all sulfur values produced and then Frasch at 22 percent. Petroleum and gas processing now generate most of the elemental sulfur produced in the world. Single Two Frasch mines remain, one each in Iraq and Poland. Conventional mining of small to insignificant volumes also survives in Russia, Latin America and Indonesia. The volume of “recovered” sulfur (the name commonly given by the industry to hydrocarbon-derived material) generated will increase faster than energy consumption as oil and gas with greater amounts of sulfur are used and environmental restrictions on the sulfur content of the fuel consumed become more stringent.

Agnico Eagle (Cadillac Quebec, Canada) selected the new Eimco PEC E – CAT™ clarifier thickeners for their counter-current decantation circuit, which handles approximately 200tph leached gold/silver ore. The E-CAT is based on rakeless ultra-high rate thickening technology that originated in South Africa. Four 9m diameter and two 10m EIMCO E – CAT ultra high rate, rakeless thickeners were installed in the fall of 2000. Thickening and clarification performance has been excellent. Problems with level control have been resolved and the plant personnel continue to improve the operating control techniques. The CCD circuit is critical to the success of the operation and good recovery. Data will be presented showing the wash ratios and recovery achieved. A brief history of the operation and the decision to utilize the CCD system will be presented.

Bolivia is nor a major gold producer but has produced continuously since pre Inca times. Production reached a peak in 1964 of about 4,000,000 grams and is currently about 1,000,000 grams. Production is mainly from the Tipuani River valley north of La Paz and is derived from Pleistocene basin fill: the Cangalli conglomerate and overlying terraces. Abandoned Pleistocene lake terraces south of La Paz in the Oruro area are another source of gold whose potential have not been realized. In both the Tipuani and Oruro areas, primitive hand methods are the principal means of production, with the exception of a single modern dredge. In spite of a long history of production, probably very little of the gold potential has been mined.

This paper presents the authors? personal experiences in the design and operation of moly separation circuits in copper-moly concentrators. Topics discussed include column cells versus mechanical cells; use of nitrogen; use of CO2 and sulfuric acid for pH modification; and general equipment selection and sizing. A benchmarking of main operating parameters for industrial plants is presented. Upgrading curves for commercial column and mechanical cleaning circuits are also presented, showing that with average flotation kinetics and rougher concentrate grades, technical grade concentrates can be easily achieved with five column cells operating in counter-current configuration.

If the past is the key to the future, we will have ?tough? times maintaining Industrial Mineral reserves we have and proving new reserves around our plants and in new locations. The tough times will come from resources being more difficult to find, more hoops to go thru to make them Proven or Probable reserves. As always, Industrial Minerals require competitive quality, location, and costs. Since in most cases the market has suppliers, you will have to take away customers from their present supplier. This may take years or not happen even with lower cost higher quality raw materials. To determine the finished cost for a new deposit you need to design, determine capital costs, and operating costs for a new plant . Stripping, mining, hauling, processing, and transportation costs are part of the equation. After satisfying that your costs are in line you will need to do production tests to make sure the process works on the ore. You may want to complete permitting before purchasing the property. If you are new in the business you will have to prove you can deliver the right quality, the right quantity, on time consistently year after year at lower cost to take away a customer. Without being in the market this will be hard. The cut off grades to enter a market may be much lower than sale indicates because a competitor often lowers the price to keep you out of the market. We have many more items to check before the new deposits can be put on reserves. Our old reserves will require drilling to check for new products and prove that they do not contain items that would make them unusable for our product line or cause permitting problems. Archeological checks, wetlands, more water discharge testing, county zoning, and endangered species are among many items that have been added to mine permits. There will be more. A 4-6 page mining permit becomes 30-300 pages and consists of 5-15 permits, any of which might be a fatal stumbling block. It is not guaranteed that we can mine what we have on reserves. We may fight and lose. Oil-Dri?s loss in Reno and LaPort?s in England are examples where permitting failed. The NOx, sulfur, and carbon problems are just starting. Dioxin is in the background requiring monitoring on food products to Europe. What other anions, cations, endangered species, and land types are going to be problems in the future are guesses now. What new products are we going to have to test for and cause out of balance reserves? If there are none we probably won?t be here. We are competing for land use with ?Endangered Species?, wetlands, farming, forestry, cities, roads, and hunting. We?ve mined the best quality, low overburden, easiest to mine and process raw materials. The price of land and taxes are increasing. Old royalties are 2-3 times the present acre value instead of 8-10 times the property value when leased. Land taxes are up. It was and is best that we get the land in Fee Simple Title. This isn?t always possible. However, plants are closing and people have overlooked, made mistakes in drilling or interpretation of deposits. These may be opportunities. China is eating up high quality ?Industrial Minerals ?which have caused prices to rise. We may need to change our cutoffs? in terms of smaller pit sizes and higher overburden ratios. This is money in the bank. Overburden ratios and other items increasing cutoff costs need to be rethought. Suddenly doubling cutoff ratios for overburden and decreasing pit sizes are good alternatives to looking elsewhere where we might not be able to mine for a number of reasons. The higher prices make them competitive, especially when a competitor goes out of business. However, our low overburden ratios and short hauls around our plants are not safe from new roads, condemnation by county or city governments (N. J.), zoning changes (Reno, FL., CA, and environmental regulation changes (Buffers GA, MS). New roads ?Interstates? can take reserves, increase hauling distances and reduce tons per load. Let?s combine the Refractories, fullers earth, and bentonite industries and use the last 40 years as a guide to the future looking for problems and opportunities. Some or most of the following will apply to other minerals. WHERE DO WE LOOK? First, on our own properties, those next to our properties and on properties near our competitor?s plants. Where the profit margin has increased, the distance from the plant and thickness of overburden we can use is increased. The thickness of clay is decreased. For new locations we pick the ideal location and look at deposits and closed or open operations in ever increasing distances away from that location. We need to be aware of: 1. Increased transportation costs a. Access to Roads -Backhauls b. Haul with doubles and triples c. Railroads - Loading on sidings - Ability to get switches - Cars/backhauls versus rates 2. Cost of building a new plant 3. Cost of infrastructure 4. Cost of repair or new equipment when purchasing an operating or shutdown plant. 5. Local, state, and federal mine and environmental permitting. When exploring around an established operation expect that property acquisition, drilling, mining, stripping, and hauling costs will be greater due to them having second, third, or even fourth the pick of the deposits. I found this in New Jersey looking for refractories and around Quincy, Florida looking for attapulgite. You may be able to get some better properties because the operating company has angered some land owners, their drillers missed the clay, or the property wasn?t available when they were actively exploring for reserves. "Float coal dust is produced by various mining methods, carried by ventilating air and deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. If deposited float dust is re-entrained during a methane explosion, without sufficient inert rock dust quantities, this float coal dust can propagate an explosion throughout mining entries. Consequently, controlling float coal dust is of critical interest to mining operations. Rock dusting—adding inert material to airway surfaces—is the main control technique currently utilized by the coal mining industry to reduce the float coal dust explosion hazard. To assist the industry in reducing this hazard, NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) initiated a project to investigate methods and technologies to reduce float coal dust in underground coal mines through prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Field characterization studies were performed to determine quantitatively the sources, types, and amounts of dust produced during various coal mining processes. The operations chosen for study were a continuous miner section, a longwall section, and a coal handling facility. For each of these operations, the primary dust sources were confirmed to be the continuous mining machine, longwall shearer, and conveyor belt transfer points, respectively. Respirable and total airborne float dust samples were collected and analyzed for each operation and the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust was calculated. During the continuous mining process, the ratio of total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ranged from 10.3 to 13.8. The ratios measured on the longwall face were between 18.5 and 21.5. The total airborne float coal dust to respirable dust ratio observed during belt transport ranged between 7.5 and 21.8. INTRODUCTION During the extraction of coal, various dusts are produced that can be classified into two categories of interest: respirable and float coal dust. Respirable dust (diameter 10.0 = µm) has the capability to penetrate beyond the terminal bronchioles and become deeply embedded into the human lungs, leading towards respiratory disease complications (Potts et al., 1990). Float coal dust is defined as coal dust having a diameter less than 74 µm (Harris et al., 2009). During the mining process, float coal dust can be deposited on the floor, roof, and ribs of mine airways. With the proper mixture of methane gas (between 5% and 15%) and an ignition source, a methane gas explosion can occur (Barker and Humphreys, 1996). The resulting explosion can develop a pressure wave which lifts the deposited float coal dust material into the air, propagating a disastrous coal mine explosion (Harris et al., 2010). The current technique to safeguard against the propagation of a coal mine explosion is to treat the mine airways with incombustible rock dust (typically limestone), maintaining an 80% total incombustible content of the deposited material. NIOSH initiated a project to investigate control technologies that could be aimed at reducing the amount of float coal dust allowed to deposit in the mine airways using three approaches: prevention, capture, and suppression prior to deposition. Reducing the float coal dust being generated during the mining processes and capturing or suppressing airborne float coal dust prior to deposition would in turn increase the efficiency of the applied rock dust used to prevent mine explosions."

"This article details the use of an alternative testing method to the 2004 "Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) Recommendations for Prestressed Rock and Soil Anchors" manual’s recommendations for temporary and permanent rock anchors for applications in shafts and tunnels. This method was developed and used for the Black River Tunnel (BRT) project in Lorain, OH as a means to reduce testing time of rock bolts during shaft construction while maintaining a similar level of quality control and assurance. The following sections will detail the project background, subsurface characteristics, shaft construction, the 2004 PTI testing method and associated difficulties, the alternative testing method and conclusions reached.Project backgroundThe city of Lorain is located in north central Ohio on the south shore of Lake Erie, approximately 40 km (25 miles) west of Cleveland and 119 km (74 miles) east of Toledo. The city chose to build a large-diameter storage tunnel and pump station to meet its requirements to reduce sanitary sewer overflows to the nearby Black River. NTH Consultants Ltd. (NTH) was retained by the city’s prime consultant, Malcolm Pirnie Inc. (now the water division of Arcadis), to perform a geotechnical investigation, develop design and construction bid documents for the tunnel and shaft liner systems and ultimately provide oversight assistance during the construction phase of the project.The BRT is an approximately 1,700-m (5,560-ft) long, 7-m (23-ft) diameter rock tunnel to be lined with a 5.8-m (19-ft) inside diameter secondary concrete lining (Fig. 1). The tunnel is designed to accept flow at a new drop shaft (Shaft 3) located on the west side of the Black River, across from the city of Lorain Black River waste water treatment plant (BRWWTP). The tunnel will be dewatered at the south end by a large diameter pump station (Shaft 1) located in the existing Lorain Port Authority Public Boat Launch. Flow from the new pump station will be discharged into an existing shallow interceptor sewer and directed back to the BRWWTP."

10.1-SHAFT SINKING AND RAISING BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS VICTOR L. STEVEN 10.1.1-SHAFT SELECTION A great deal of thought and planning should go into the selection of a mine shaft to provide the most effective use over the greatest, period of time. It sometimes is better to make an additional capital expenditure in the initial shaft program to achieve the greatest overall shaft usage. It is possible to sink a shaft which could be used for mine development, and initial production and later convert it to a ventilation, service or escape shaft. It is important to consider a second shaft in the original planning to provide ventilation, an escapeway and services for overall efficient production and safety. A second shaft usually is required to comply with state and federal mining laws. The main items to consider in shaft selection are: 1. Installation from surface or underground. 2. Vertical or inclined (sec Sec. 10.1.4L for discussion of factors involved in choice). 3. Tonnage to be hoisted. 4. Size of mining equipment to be lowered through the shaft to the underground workings. 5. Amount of water to be handled in the mining operation. 6. Ventilation requirements. 7. Type of ground the shaft is to be sunk through. 8. Position of shaft with relation to ore body. After the main features of a shaft arc determined, such as vertical or inclined, shape, size, type of lining and support, compartments, and shaft. facilities (air, water, ventilation, pump lines, power cahles, etc.), then :I sinking plant and procedures should be planned. At this point it should be decided whether the company will sink the shaft with its own crews or award the job to a competent shaft contractor. Company sinking generally will cost less if competent shaft men are available. Money also will be saved in plant costs, such as for hoist, headframe, compressed air, buildings, etc., as these will be part of the permanent plant and can be used in the sinking operation. Labor costs generally will be lower than contractor construction rates. The advantage of having a contract, or is the speed of completion of the project. Contractors usually have headframes and hoists ready to move on the job immediately and have trained crews ready to complete the project in the shortest possible time. Next, the type of surface sinking plant (hoist, headframe, etc.) should be selected and a determination made whether it is to be temporary or permanent. In most cases it is less expensive to install the permanent, headframe and hoist, and use them for sinking. The type of actual sinking equipment to be used should be evaluated for the most efficient sinking cycle, e.g., mucking method, drilling method, and lining or support means. The proper cycling of drilling, mucking and lining is extremely important in obtaining the most favourable sinking costs. 10.1.2 - GROUND STABILIZATION AND WATER CONTROL Prior to the shaft-sinking operation an investigation should be made into ground-water conditions. On the east side of Washington DC, the DC Water & Sewer Authority is developing a Facility Plan for the Anacostia River CSO Control Projects, including 8 to 12 miles of CSO storage/conveyance and flood relief tunnels and associated facilities. The project includes major technical and non-technical challenges, including: completion under a Federal Consent Decree schedule; large diameter (estimated 25 to 35 ft) soft ground tunnels and shafts up to 200 ft depth; operations without use of active flow control systems; and close coordination with several major public and private construction and development projects that are being advanced in the project area.

The El Sauzal deposit is a classic, high sulfidation, epithermal gold system located in the southwestern Chihuahua state of Mexico (Fig. 1). A Francisco Gold geologist discovered the prospect in1995. El Sauzal was encountered as a result of an extensive grassroots exploration program in the rugged, dissected volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, around the historical Batopilas silver camp. At El Sauzal, high grade gold is hosted within a series of more permeable, low-dipping, lithic and fine-grained dacitic rocks of early Tertiaryage. The mineralization appears tobe structurally and lithologically controlled. The alteration characteristics are typical of a high sulfidation system, including kaolinite, illite, alunite, dickite and pyrophyllite.

Ultrafine copper, gold and silver minerals flotation has become increasingly important because of the rising demand for processing finely disseminated ores. This paper investigates the improved flotation of ultrafine ores from a Troilus Gold project. Troilus is primarily an Au-Cu deposit but contains minor amounts of Ag, Zn and Pb, as well as traces of Bi, Te, and Mo. As a result of ultrafine Cu-Au-Ag dissemination and associated grinding requirements, Eriez’ column/StackCell and Denver benchtop cells were utilized to optimize their respective flotation responses. Enhanced flotation results were achieved using column and StackCell technologies. KAX 51 and SPRI 206 collectors, Na2SO3, and ZnSO4 depressants were the primary reagents employed. In column/StackCell flotation of three main mineral deposit ore composites, the rougher-scavenger-cleaner circuit Cu, Au and Ag flotation recoveries were 90.4~95.8% at a copper grade of 13.6-17.4%, 87.5-95.1% at a gold grade of 101-145.9 g/t, and 88.6-91.8% at a silver grade of 62.6-251.4 g/t, respectively. The benefits of Eriez Column/StackCell flotation technologies include high flotation selectivity and increased recovery due to unique hydrodynamic designs. Specifically, the StackCell design facilitates high turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates to improve fine particle recovery and incorporates countercurrent wash water to significantly reduce hydraulic entrainment of the finest size gangue minerals to the froth product.

Over the next two decades there will be significant trade and development opportunities in China for mining, engineering, equipment, and construction companies interested in becoming part of the development of China's chemical and fertilizer industries. At last count, China's phosphate ore reserves of 11.8 Gt (13 billion st), ranked fourth in the world behind the US, the USSR, and Sahara-Morocco. However, a recent statement by the head of the Ministry of Geology and Minerals, Sun Daguang, claims that with increased prospecting in the last few years, China's phosphate reserves now rank first in the world. Whatever the actual size of its known and potential reserves, China's present phosphate processing capabilities fall far short of demand, while the substantial progress that has been made in this area points out the severity of the problems that still remain. Since 1949 China has developed 181 mines and increased its phosphate concentrate production from 10 kt (11,000 st) to 10.86 Mt (11.97 million st). By the 1980s, China was the third largest chemical fertilizer producer in the world-although this claim is slightly misleading as China's nitrogen/phosphate potassium ratios are far from average world ratios and even further from US standards. According to the Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in 1982, the country's development plans emphasize the expansion and upgrading of key energy and industrial sectors, including that of fertilizer production-specifically phosphate and potash. Within the framework of the plan, the Ministry of Chemical Industry's development priorities are to: • Increase potash production by 150% to 50 kt (55,115 st). • Raise phosphate fertilizer production 21.2% to 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st), 46 kt (50,705 st) of which will come from new projects constructed and completed within the Sixth Five Year Plan, with projected new production of phosphate concentrate and complex fertilizer in the next decades totaling 500 kt (551,146 st). • Commence work to increase phosphate ore production by 8.33 Mt (9.18 million st). Facilities for 2.43 Mt (2.68 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Commence work to increase iron pyrite ore production by 3.69 Mt (4.07 million st), facilities for 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Verify 600 Mt (661 million st) of new phosphate ore reserves. Since the promulgation of the Sixth Five Year Plan, Chinese authorities have announced that 70 key construction projects will receive top priority in the implementation of the plan. These projects include five in the chemical industry area, including the construction of four fertilizer plants in Urumqi (Xinjiang), Zhenhai (Zhejiang), Beijing, and Lucheng (Shanxi), and a pyrite mine in Yunfu (Guangdong). In addition, by 1985 the state will expand or construct three major phosphate mines: Wangji in Hubei, Kaiyang in Guizhou, and Kunyang in Yunnan. Fertilizer Ratios In 1982, China's fertilizer production was slightly higher than 12 Mt (13.2 million st) and consisted of 80% nitrogen, 19% phosphate, and 0.19% potassium. By 1985, state officials project that fertilizer production will reach 13.4 Mt (14.8 million st) and consist of 78.4% nitrogen (10.5 Mt or 11.6 million st), 21.2% phosphate (2.8 Mt or 3 million st), and 0.39% potassium (52.3 kt or 57,605 st). To attain the world average using the country's 1985 projected production level for nitrogen, China will have to double its 1985 phosphate production to 5.76 Mt (6.35 million st) and increase its 1985 potassium production almost 80 times to 4.1 Mt (4.5 million st). These numbers demonstrate the seriousness of the fertilizer production problem in China today and the long-term nature of the problem's solution. Development Examples Yunnan is the third largest phosphate-rich province in China with verified deposits of 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st). Despite this abundance, the province only mines around 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of phosphate rock annually. In June of this year, Yunnan announced its intention to initiate 39 development projects within the next two and a half years, requiring an estimated $200 million worth of foreign investment. The Republic of South Africa is an outstanding example of the benefits to a new land by the application of individual enterprise, capital and know-how. While South Africa was colonized by European and Bantu people some 300 years ago, it was only 70 to 80 years agog when diamonds were discovered at Kimberley and gold on the Witswatersrand, that the mining, industrial and commercial potential of the country began to emerge. South Africa s national income rose from R1, 200 million in 1945 to over R4 billion in 1960 (1R = 10 shillings = $1.40 U. S.) The annual national income per head of population -- including all races -- is currently R254 (£127) This compares with £24 for India., £30 for Nigeria, and £50 for Ghana. Allowing for the increase in population, the increase in real income per head of population was about 40% during the past 15 years.

Overcoring tests were conducted at the Near-Surface Test Facility(NSTF) to assess the suitability of five techniques (U.S. Bureau of Mines borehole deformation gauge (BDG), Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) hollow inclusion stress cell, Luleå triaxial gauge (LuH gauge), and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) doorstopper) for in situ stress determination in a closely jointed basalt. This effort is in support of the Basalt Waste Isolation Project, which is studying the feasibility of locating a nuclear waste repository in the basalts of the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington. This paper presents the results from the overcoring study that formed the basis for selection of two techniques to be used during the further exploration of the basalt formations at depth.
