There is a large economic opportunity associated with improving metallurgical performance in mineral processing plants that use process control. Thus, future control systems will be developed towards more sophisticated user friendly, computer-based systems that use powerful software analysis and control techniques. Auto-tuning, adaptive control and process models will gain expanded use because of their transparent availability to the system designer. Control of individual unit operations will be optimized and coordinated through expert systems that monitor economic conditions and management directives and direct operations accordingly. Plant areas, once considered cost centers, will be integrated into plant-wide control systems for economic control and optimization. This article looks at new control hardware, process sensors, control strategies and software development tools. It also looks at the economics driving the continued development of advanced process control systems. Process control systems routinely used in the mining industry were born when the microprocessor was invented. They have continued along an evolutionary path from vendor specific processing hardware and proprietary operating systems to computer industry standard "open architecture" systems. The many economic forces that drive the development and functionality of these process control systems will cause this evolutionary process to continue. Introduction During the last decade, the metallic minerals segment of the industry could be categorized as a "feast-or-famine" business. It is no secret that metallic minerals are cyclical. Employment opportunities greatly depend on the supply and demand for its mineral products. It is also not unusual for there to be a lag between the industry's manpower requirements and academia's ability to produce new graduates. Due to this lag, there will be years with manpower shortages, as in the mid-1970s. At other times, supply will exceed demand. The question is where will the jobs be in the years to come? This presentation will review reasons why employment opportunities have declined within the metallic minerals industry. It will also predict future demand for mineral engineering graduates. And it will outline strategies for obtaining an employment offer. Historical Review - Employment From 1977 through 1983, about 75% of all metal mining employees were directly engaged in production activities, down from 83% in 1965. This decline reflects increased use of labor saving equipment, and more government regulation and foreign competition. Metal mining's employment decreased from 74,000 jobs in 1982 to fewer than 68,000 in 1983 - an 8% decline. The overall industry is having these problems because of the general downturn in the economy. For example, at the beginning of this decade, US automobile and steel industries were in trouble. Interest rates were too high and volatile. This adversely affected construction, housing starts, and manufacturing. All these industries, being large users of base metals, drastically affected the metals industry. US copper companies are still having problems. Reports indicate that many copper employers have cut production, laid-off workers, and permanently closed mines, refineries, and smelters. A decline in the demand for US produced metal products, such as copper, obviously affects some mineral engineering employment opportunities. Other factors to consider when looking at employment opportunities and why it has become difficult for US metal producers to compete in the world market include: • The grades of ore bodies of many US minerals are considerably lower than the grades of ores being mined elsewhere in the world. • The grades of ore bodies currently being mined in the US are steadily declining. • Foreign producers are largely government controlled and are not necessarily subject to the realities of supply and demand. • US environmental regulations have considerably added to production costs. Foreign producers in most countries do not have to worry about these additional costs. • US mines are getting deeper. This adds to the cost of production because of the increasing distance the ore has to be transported. • Plants and equipment are outdated. Many companies find themselves operating with equipment and plants that need modernizing or replacing. This obviously hinders competitive productivity. • Labor and management have had problems. Work stoppages in certain mining businesses and high wage and benefit costs in relation to foreign producers place US producers at a disadvantage. • Much land is unavailable. The US government owns most of the land considered to have the best potential for minerals development. Most of this land is unavailable for mining or exploration. Therefore, it appears that finding employment with a company whose primary business is mining and processing most metals, such as copper, in the US will be quite restricted and competitive. Future Demand It is difficult to anticipate what key employment opportunities within the next few years will be available to mineral engineering graduates. The Engineering Manpower Commission estimated that US engineering schools awarded 72,471 undergraduate degrees in 1983 vs. 66,990 in 1982. This was the eighth consecutive year in which the number of baccalaureates awarded has increased. On a brighter note, the US government's Occupational Outlook Quarterly stated that the growth rate through 1995 for all engineers is an encouraging 49% over present levels. Introduction The Homestake Mining Co. has always been big on gold. After 108 years in the business, the company and its principal product are almost synonymous. The relationship continues. On Sept. 28, 1985, Homestake held formal dedication ceremonies for its newest gold mine - McLaughlin. The McLaughlin open-pit operation is located in northern California, some 113 km (70 miles) northeast of San Francisco. It lies near the boundaries of three counties - Napa, Yolo, and Lake - and a portion of its facilities are located in each. McLaughlin was originally the site of the Manhattan mercury mine that produced nearly 80,000 flasks of the quicksilver from the 1860s to 1978. At the September dedication, Homestake renamed the mine in honor of the late Donald H. McLaughlin. McLaughlin was with Homestake for nearly 60 years. He rose from exploration geologist to his ultimate positions of chief executive officer, director, chairman of the board of directors, chairman emeritus, and chairman of the executive committee. The discovery of the McLaughlin deposit occurred in 1978, the last year of operation for the Manhattan mine. Homestake geologists used a newly developed model and found surface gold at the mine site. That same year, Homestake signed an agreement with the property owner and began a two-and-a-half year exploration program. An initial discovery announcement of 31.1 t (1 million oz) of gold was made in 1980. In 1981, this was revised to 93.3 t (3 million oz), or 18 Mt (20 million st) of ore grading 5.2 g/t (0.152 oz per st). Expected mine life is 20 years. Construction began in September 1983, following the issuance of stage one permits. Start-up of operations took place in early 1985 and the first gold-silver dore bar was poured on March 4. Since then, more than 540 kt (600,000 st) of ore has been milled, producing about 1.6 t (50,000 oz) of gold. Of special interest at McLaughlin is the use of three autoclaves for gold extraction. According to Homestake, this is a first. The autoclaves are designed for a 90% gold recovery rate. Early results have proven yields at this rate and higher. To accommodate the immediate and long term growth of the Hunter Valley, one of Australia's major coal producing regions, a third coal terminal was required in the Port of Newcastle, N.S.W. The initial capacity required was 15 million tons per annum, made up of 40 different blends, to be expanded to 50 million tons of 100 different blends, made up from 70 grades. Coal arrives in 3,200 ton unit trains, a total of 16,000 trains in a year.

INTRODUCTION The extension project of the East Line Subway of Atlanta's subway network includes the construction of two single track transit tunnels under Interstate Highway 285. The project will be in DeKalb County, Georgia. The length, width, and height of each tunnel are 54.25, 6.3, and 7.2 m (178, 21, and 23 ft) respectively. The ground cover above the tunnel crown ranges from 1.5 to 3.25 m (5 to 11 ft). A soil pillar about 5.5 m (18 ft) wide will remain between the tunnels. The construction of each tunnel includes (i) installation of 21 steel soil support pipes of 75 cm (30 in) diameter, (ii) jet grouting 15 soil cement shafts of 60 cm (24 in) diameter in the soil under the pipes, (iii) contact grouting behind the tunnel lining and between soil support pipes and pavement, (iv) excavation of soil inside the soil support arch, and (v) installation of steel pile foundation, steel sets, and permanent tunnel lining of cast-in-place concrete, all as shown on the cross section in Fig. 1. The soil profile can be described from top to bottom as cement/asphalt concrete pavement, a fill layer consisting mostly of stiff sandy silt/firm silty sand, a residual soil layer consisting mostly of silty sand/sandy silt, partially weathered rock, and solid rock.

Three run-of-mine bituminous coals, which ranged in rank from low volatile to high volatile A, were floated at nominal -28 mesh (590 µ m), -100 mesh (150 µ m), and -400 mesh (37 µ m) feed particle sizes with selected pyrite depressants and a dispersant. For the coals tested, pyrite and ash-forming minerals were usually rejected best at a -100 mesh feed particle size. Depressant additions tended to improve flotation selectivity between pyrite and coal. When joint dispersant-depressant systems were used at -100 mesh (150 µ m) feed particle sizes, the total sulfur content of the clean coal decreased further. For a comparable coal yield, less fuel oil collector was required for the flotation of -100 mesh coal than was required for the flotation of either -28 or -400 mesh feed.

The Chinese city of Shanghai is one of the fastest growing in the world. To keep up with the growth, two tunnels, three-lanes each, are being built beneath the Yangtze River to connect Shanghai with the Changxing River Island. To complete such a large project, Herrenknecht Tunneling Systems was brought in to construct the largest tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world. The first Herrenknecht S-317 Mixshield has a diameter of 15.43 m (50.62 ft). It was built to construct one of the two 7.2-km (4.5-mile) tunnels. The tunnels are part of the Changjiang Under River Tunnel Project and will be at depths of up to 65 m (213 ft) beneath the Yangtze River in Shanghai-Pudong. These two tunnels are to be opened to traffic in April 2010, in time for Shanghai to host the World Expo. More than 20 million people live in the Shanghai area. The area itself has been growing at an extremely rapid pace for more than a decade and is in need of more space. The search extended beyond the natural limits of the Yangtze River Delta. As part of its incredible growth, 500 new vehicles are registered every day. The new tunnels will connect the Changxing River Island, with a population of approximately 600,000 people to the road traffic network. A bridge construction will also provide a traffic link between Changxing Island and the large island of Chongming.

The dream of constructing the new Second Avenue Subway in New York has finally become reality as the first construction contract package is currently underway. This first contract requires the construction a TBM Launch Box in the middle of Second Avenue from which a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) will bore two tunnels south to 63rd Street. This paper will discuss the design of this contract and how construction has progressed including preparation, site constraints, utility construction and com-munity impacts while highlighting the challenges of working in an urban environment. It will also discuss moving forward on this major project outlining the remaining contract packages including their scope and status.

If an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM is operated effectively tunneling can be carried out producing negligible ground movements. Using the methods given in this paper face losses of the order of 0.5% and less are generally obtainable using an EPB. Operating the EPB TBM in this manner reduces the requirement for the building protection measures used to protect surface structures. This can result in a considerable cost saving for the construction of a tunnel under built up areas. This paper to give guidance on the causes of ground movements around a TBM and the methods of running an EPB TBM that will minimize those movements. Details of how this was successfully done during the construction of the Bangkok Metro are given. In recent years, domestic coal mining companies have become more attentive to the contribution safety and loss control programs have on their financial results. Although most have adopted fairly conventional safety programs, some have created systems and processes tailored to their unique circumstances. While each coal mining business must consider the typical risks inherent to our industry, excellence in safety is most likely achieved when a safety program is customized to meet the needs of the individual business.

INTRODUCTION The Bunker Hill mine, located at Kellogg, ID, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, has been a major pro¬ducer of lead-zinc-silver ore since 1887. Since its dis¬covery, it has produced over 25 401 171 t (28 million st) of ore from 20 to 25 veins and ore zones. The mine now covers an area of approximately 1.609 km (1 mile) in length and 0.8 km (1/2 mile) in width and extends from 1097 m (3600 ft) above sea level to 488 m (1600 ft) below sea level. Production is presently at a rate of 1542 t/d (1700 stpd). During 1965, a new stoping method, the Bunker Hill pillar system, was developed to enable the profitable mining of large, low-grade zinc ore bodies. The system was specifically designed to in¬corporate the Atlas Copco T26GH rubber-tired loaders. High productivities were achieved, and the method was adapted for mining the higher grade stopes where large timber square sets are utilized. This results in nearly 100% extraction. GEOLOGY The area encompassing the Bunker Hill mine lies immediately south of the Osburn fault, a major east-west striking, deep-seated strike slip fault which is the dominant structural feature in the Coeur d'Alene district. The Bunker Hill forms a series of veins and mineralized zones which occur as link structures, tension fractures, and breccia zones in folded, interbedded argillaceous quartzites of the Revett and St. Regis formations of the Precambrian belt series. The Rosco ore body is predominantly a zinc ore body above the Cate fault, which is presently known to occur from the 13 level. [elevation 488 m (1600 ft)] to the 1600 level [elevation 304 m (1000 ft) ]. These ore bodies are stringer zones with at least one dominant 1.8 to 4.5 m (6 to 15 ft) wide band of ore. They dip 0.09 to 0.26 rad (5° to 15°) steeper than the local 0.61 rad (35°) dip of the Cate fault, and also deviate 0.26 to 0.52 rad (15° to 30°) in strike from the Cate. Because of the flat dip and fractured weak hanging wall, normal cut-and-fill mining has not proven practical in this ore body. The mechanized timber methods described in the next section and the Bunker Hill pillar system are the mining methods successfully used. Filtration of fine particles involves filter cake formation and removal of surface moisture by drawing air through the porous structure. Accurate assessment of the transport properties of porous media (in this case, filter cake) is of major importance in the development of improved filtration processes. Implications from these studies are important in the design and operation of filtration equipment in order to enhance the efficiency of this important solid-liquid separation process. The microstructure and connectivity of pore space are important features necessary to describe detailed fluid flow phenomena in filter cake during fine particle filtration. In this regard, 3D characterization of pore structure is essential. The pore structure has to be described by parameters which are of special relevance to the interpretation of fluid transport phenomena. These parameters should be based on directly measured variables of the pore system and not inferred from indirect variables (such as those determined empirically from transport processes) valid only for a particular pore structure. In this way fundamental relationships between pore structure and fluid transport at the microstructure level can be described. In order to achieve this level of sophistication the three-dimensional interconnected pore structure of filter cake must be determined. Study of fluid transport phenomena in filter cake using x-ray microtomography to characterize the complex three-dimensional pore geometry is discussed. On this basis the Lattice-Boltzmann (LB) method is used to simulate and to establish a fundamental relationship between pore microstructure and effective transport coefficients.

Atomic Energy of Canada, Ltd. (AECL) is constructing an Underground Research Laboratory (URL), a major component of-the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. In July 1988. AECL and the US Department of Energy commenced a cooperative research program that included extending the URL shaft by 190 m (623 ft) to the 443-m (1,453 ft) depth. The shaft extension, 4.6-m- diam (15-ft-diam), was excavated by full-face blasting using a burn cut. A Galloway stage accommodated the research activities and the sinking contractor's requirements. Blast designs incorporated controlled blasting techniques to minimize blast-induced damage on the shaft walls. The full-face method has been very effective, with 3.5-m (11.5-ft) rounds being advanced.

In this paper, long-term measurements in five underground mines are presented to demonstrate how these measurements can be applied to stability evaluations and design of underground excavations. These case studies address both the global aspects of strata response to mining activities as well local ground behavior and support loading. The measurements include static (stress and deformation) and geophysical. Case studies quantify pillar behavior, roof-floor deformation patterns, overburden response, and microseismic activities. Large-scale studies quantify the nonuniform nature of overburden deformation and collapse. Local measurements address yield and stable pillar load deformation characteristics, as well as the performance of support systems under combined axial and lateral loads.

The objective of this paper is to present preliminary capital and operating cost estimates (±25%) comparing conventional carbon-in-solution (CIS) with resin-in­solution (RIS) using AuRIX® 100 for the recovery of gold and silver from typical heap leach solutions. Preliminary testwork was carried out with AuRIX® 100 using real and synthetic leach solutions to determine the technical viability of the resin for gold/silver recovery and to provide process design parameters for the preliminary RIS circuit. The scope of the resin testwork was sufficient to support the level of accuracy applied in the capital and operating cost estimates. No parallel testwork was carried out with activated carbon. Industry standard design data and operating data from existing CIS operations were used as a basis for the comparison. Both the capital and operating cost comparisons indicate a substantial savings for a RIS circuit using AuRIX® 100 (- 14 to 18% in terms of capital and 25 to 35% in terms of operating costs) over a conventional CIS circuit depending upon solution flows and grade.

A system, such as a mine production system or a mine ventilation system which includes the movement of commodities or some material between decision points may, in many instances, be effectively modelled as a network. Mining has often been characterized as primarily a materials handling function. To a great extent this is true, even though it is an over simplification of all the activities involved in a mining operation. Accepting the materials handling characterization of a mining operation permits the extension of the characterization to a flow process. That is, the ore flows from the mining face through the mining phase (excavation & loading, hauling, dumping) through the milling phase (crushing, grinding, recovery) through the smelter phase and finally to marketing. With this concept it is possible to depict a mining operation as a simple network. For example consider an operation consisting of two mines (A and B) with mills at each mine (MA and MB) with the possibility open to treat ore from mine b at mill NB, but it is not feasible to treat mine B ore at MA. The product of both mills is sold.

Traditional fine grinding mills in mineral processing relied on the use of steel medium for particle size reduction. The successful development of the Isa Mill(a horizontal stirred mill with 3000 litres of net chamber volume and 1120 kW rated motor power)adopted a novel product separator design that has led to a major revision of medium use in fine grinding. The Isa Mill separator has also successfully operated with a wide variety of medium types such as silica sands, river gravel, smelter slag, run-of-mine ore fractions and steel shots, with size ranges from 0.5 to 10 mm. A great flexibility of the Isa Mill operations has been achieved for processing a feed as coarse as 120 um to a product as fine as 5 µm. This paper discusses the performance of two inert grinding media used in the Isa Mills in Mount Isa Mines of Australia for processing galena and sphalerite bearing ores to below 10 microns. They are the copper reverberatory furnace slag (CRFS)and the heavy medium plant rejects (HMPR). A methodology was also demonstrated for comparing the medium performance and for scaling up the Isa Mills from a 1.5-litre laboratory batch mill to a full scale 3000-litre mill.

Introduction One hundred years ago, a recent college graduate created the US aluminum industry. He found an economic way to crack the primeval bond that makes the metal so special. Aluminum doesn't "rust" - oxidize progressively. Rather, when exposed to air, it instantly forms a gem-hard but microscopic oxide coating. This seals off oxygen from the metal underneath. Scratch it and the seal reforms instantly. That tight chemical bond is the reason the metal is not found in nature; it exists only as a compound. The bond had to be broken to free the shiny metal. But once it is free, that self-sealing protection, alongside a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, offers a marvelous material. Until 100 years ago, finding a way to do that economically was a challenge that defied science. Then it was solved, in a remarkable coincidence, on both sides of the Atlantic. And the way was paved for a material that would become the second most widely used metal in the world. Until that time, aluminum was a rare and precious metal. But then two young scientists independently invented the process that took aluminum outside the laboratory and into applications ranging from pots and pans to spacecraft. Discovery of aluminum Other major metals - copper, iron, lead, gold, and silver - had been used for thousands of years. But aluminum was entirely unknown until 1782, when French chemist Antoine Lavoisier suspected its presence. It was not actually discovered until Sir Humphry Davy, in England, detected it in clay in 1807. It was first isolated as a free metal only in 1825, by Denmark's Hans Christian Oersted. For years, laboratory methods yielded aluminum only in tiny amounts costing about $1200/kg ($545 per lb) - $13,333/kg ($6000 per lb) in today's dollars. Methods developed by French scientist Henri Sainte-Claire Deville in 1854 cut the cost to about $200/kg ($90 per lb). King Frederick VII of Denmark had a helmet of aluminum and gold. And Emperor Napoleon III of France reportedly served his most exalted guests at a state dinner with aluminum plates. He left the lower ranks to dine from pure gold. Deville and others continued to reduce production costs. But the price of aluminum still rivaled silver - $31/kg ($14 per lb) versus about $35/kg ($16 per lb) for silver. Then in 1884, a 2.8-kg (6.25-1b), 230-mm-tall (9-in.-tall) aluminum pyramid was cast as the tip of the Washington Monument. It was probably the first architectural use of aluminum. And it is still there after more than a century. The attractive properties of aluminum were obvious: it is lightweight but strong, conducts heat and electricity, reflects light and other electromagnetic radiation, and resists corrosion. But its commercial promise was blocked by its cost. In 1885, the price of aluminum was $17.70/kg ($8 per lb). It stayed there for the next couple of years until the Hall-Heroult process brought it down sharply. Hall-Heroult process lowers aluminum costs The characteristic that kept aluminum hidden so long continued to thwart chemists. Aluminum clings to oxygen so tightly that it is never found as a free metal in nature, and it is hard to break that bond chemically. The best chemical methods of the 1880s required sodium, and sodium itself was expensive. At Oberlin College in Ohio, chemistry professor Frank Fanning Jewett advised his students that anyone who could make aluminum inexpensive would do humanity a favor and get rich as well.

The Upper Silesian Coal Basin is located in the area of the Upper Silesian Syncline and belongs to one of the most complex tectonic units in Europe. It occupies 5,650 km2. In 2020, there were 20 hard coal mines operating in the area. Seismological research in this area consists of observation of precursors/symptoms of shock generation and understanding of their effects. Studies (Teisseyre R. 1972, Mutke G. & Stec K. 1997, Stec K. 2007, Dubiński J. & other 2010, Idziak A. 2010) of complex impacts of rock mass provided a background for determining the conditions for the formation of exploitation and regional seismic shocks. Issues related to tectonic and exploitation stresses, successive extraction of coal seams at higher depths, operation in the vicinity of fault zones, often complex geological and organic conditions result in the activation of a discontinuity surface due to stress caused by deformation of rock layers, which, as a result, causes the emergence of strong shocks above 107 J. The article was based on analyses of extraction value, high-energy shocks, both of mining and tectonic-mining (so-called regional shocks) origin, against the background of changing operating conditions, which, as a result, creates an image of periodically changing seismic activity and location of strong shocks. Observation results show that, with an increase in exploitation depth and declining extraction, the number of strong shocks caused by tectonic stress (107 - 109 J) and exploitation stress (≥105 J) has been steadily increasing over the last 25 years.

A technique was devised by the Bureau of Nines to recover coarse (plus 1.7 m) North Carolina phosphate now discarded as waste. Concentration utilizes the difference in particle sphericity between the relatively flat calcite and the rounded phosphate pebbles. Sizing, treatment in a continuous hydraulic classification system, and grinding upgraded a 17.0-pct-P205 reject to 24.5 pct P205 with a phosphate recovery of 63 pct.
