Mount Isa Mine should be regarded as a large mining complex rather than one mine. This arises from the geography, variety and extent of the orebodies, the mining methods, and the use of 14 shafts for ventilation distribution. A brief resume is presented here since comprehensive descriptions of lead-zinc mining methods {11}, copper mining methods {2 }{3}, geology 241, stope fill {5} and ventilation techniques {6}{7}, have all been published in the last five years. Mining extends over a north-south strike length of 2.5 miles (4 Ian) with a maximum width across dip approaching 3 200 ft (1 Ian). Current mining is to a depth of 3 150 ft (960 m) with the ore hoisting shafts extending 660 ft (200 m) deeper. The composite longitudinal section, Figure 1, shows a representational disposition of the copper and lead-zinc-silver orebodies in the central shaft complex where the main service and hoisting shafts are located. To the south the X41 man and materials shaft provides access to the copper area. The mine layout is typical of high tonnage track- less mines, utilising a large diesel fleet, raise- borers and some large diameter hole stope drilling. Mining methods include sublevel open stoping, slot and massfire, and a trial vertical crater retreat in the copper ore, and sublevel caving, sublevel open stopes with and without rib pillar recovery, and mechanised cut and fill in the numerous lead orebodies. All ore reports to one of the three crushing systems located below 19 level in the central shaft complex. Copper ore is hauled exclusively along the 19 level computer assisted Rockflo haulage system, and lead-zinc-silver ores report via central orepasses from Granby haulages on 13 level and 15 level. Tonnages hoisted during the 1977178 financial year were 5.0 million for copper at 3.2%. and 2.3 million for lead-zinc-silver at 7.8%. 6.3% and 7.06 oz/ton (216 g/tonne) respectively.

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.

Selective flocculation and dispersion processes for the concentration of hematite ore are strongly dependent on the ionic content of the process water. It has been noticed that magnesium ions are more detrimental to iron recoveries during desliming and flotation processes than calcium. This phenomenon was studied by measuring the zeta potential of hematite ore at various concentrations of magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium at a pH of 11. Results show that zeta potential inverts from negative to positive at very low concentrations of magnesium ions in the solution. It takes a significantly higher concentration of calcium, ions to achieve the same effect. This difference may be attributed to the ability of magnesium ions to adsorb to all surface hydroxyl groups, whereas calcium, due to their larger size, can only adsorb to every other hydroxyl group. This hypothesis was confirmed by results similar to those seen with calcium when this test was repeated with strontium and barium ions. The tendency for calcium ions to adsorb to every other surface hydroxyl group causes higher concentrations of calcium to be less detrimental to hematite concentration processes than magnesium.

Introduction The feeding to zero concept involves feeding 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size raw coal to heavy media (magnetite) cyclones along with the +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. Traditional circuits employ desliming or removing the 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size fraction and feeding the cyclones +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. The feeding to zero concept recirculates 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) fines in the circuit. At the same time, a portion of the fine material is continuously withdrawn and recovered. This, in turn, prevents a fines buildup. This concept eliminates desliming screens and secondary fines circuitry for recovery of 600 x 150 µm (28 mesh x 100 mesh) coal. The result is a very simple circuit. Feeding to zero at Island Creek Island Creek Corp. was the first involved with the new concept in 1976. The company needed a temporary plant for the 9.5 mm x 0 (0.4 in. x 0) raw coal at its Pond Fork mine, near Madison, WV, while a full-scale plant was being designed and built. At that time, the Childress Corp., of Beckley, WV, became interested in the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek awarded a contract to Childress to build a single cyclone modular plant, incorporating this feeding to zero concept. The plant was erected in three months. The Pond Fork modular plant proved successful in attaining the desired feed rate of about 63.5 t/h (70 stph), while maintaining good separating efficiencies and low magnetite consumption rates. The 9.5 mm x 150 µm (0.4 in. x 100 mesh) clean coal was recovered and the 150 µm x 0 (100 mesh x 0) size was disposed of to waste. The full-scale plant was completed about two years later and the Pond Fork modular plant was moved to Holden, WV. There, it was incorporated into the Holden 29 preparation plant as a separate circuit for cleaning -25 mm (-1 in.) coal. In 1976, a similar plant was installed in Virginia by another company. These two plants are believed to be the first two operational plants in the United States incorporating the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek subsequently contracted with Childress for an identical plant at the Coal Mountain operation in West Virginia. The plant operated for three years before the mine was closed. The unit was then moved to the Spurlock mine near Martin, KY where it continues to operate. The successful operation of the Pond Fork and Coal Mountain plants before and after relocation proved both the performance and moveability of this type of circuit when constructed in a modular fashion. Since the first two plants were built, Island Creek has incorporated the feeding to zero circuit in nine additional plants. A grand total of 33 cyclones have been installed using this concept. One is the Providence mine, near Providence. Providence preparation plant Island Creek contracted with J.O. Lively Corp. of Glen White, WV in July 1978 for the construction of the Providence preparation plant. The plant began operation in February 1979. The construction period was about halved by building the plant with modular design concepts. Prefabricated sections, floors, and sides were brought in as units and then bolted in place. The Providence plant has a good track record of processing coal at a feed rate of 454 kt/h (500 stph). Feed coal to the plant has an average ash content of about 18% and sulfur content of about 4.5%. It contains about 22% refuse. The coal product has an average ash content of about 8% and sulfur content is about 3%. Raw West Kentucky No. 9 seam coal is conveyed from a box cut in the Providence mine to a rotary breaker. The breaker is fitted with 74 mm-diam (3 in.-diam) opening breaker plates. EMR Microwave has developed several unique processes for the pretreatment of refractory gold and copper ores. This report describes a recent large scale pilot project involving a carbonaceous gold-bearing whole ore. Pilot plant testwork conducted jointly by EMR and Bateman Engineering Inc. has shown that 90+% cyanide soluble gold recovery is obtainable from refractory (sulphide and carbonaceous) Carlin, Nevada gold ores. Typical cyanide soluble gold recoveries for untreated material is 20%. AC energy consumption was found to be between 58.l kWh/ton and 15.5 kWh/t for an assumed heat recovery of 50% and 80% respectively. The plant was operated at reduced temperatures ( 400°C) from previous testwork on similar ore at 600°-700°C.

The Silver Line Phase III Project is the final one mile underground segment of the new Bus Rapid Transit in downtown Boston. The project is expected to significantly reduce existing and anticipated traffic congestion. The twin one-lane tunnels and two station platforms will be built by NATM in Boston saturated soft clay, sand and till layers in proximity to several historical buildings, underpinning two existing cut and cover subway stations and several major utilities in densely built urban area. U.S. mines are among the most efficient, productive and safest in the world. Much of that efficiency is due to the high-technology equipment and processes available to the industry. The U.S. mining industry can produce more material now with fewer people than it could a few decades ago. And that material can be produced more safely. However, the workforce is growing older and fewer young people are filling the holes created by retirements. Even though mining is one of the highest paid occupations in the United States, young people believe they can find jobs that pay almost as well without the risks and the often remote locations associated with mines.

Electromagnetic-based proximity detection systems (PDSs) are utilized on mining machinery to protect workers from being pinned or struck. These systems generate magnetic fields covering the space around a machine, and a miner-wearable component (MWC) detects the field. The PDS determines the distance of miners relative to the machine based on the detected magnetic flux density in the magnetic field. This information is used to establish warning and shutdown zones around the machine. Maintaining a stable magnetic field is essential for system accuracy. However, components used to generate magnetic fields can be influenced by temperature changes. Depending on ventilation conditions and seasonal alternation, a PDS can be subject to significant temperature fluctuation. To better understand and quantify this phenomenon, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed an experimental apparatus to study the influence of temperature on magnetic field generator circuits used in PDSs. Results from the study show that the electric current through a generator can be influenced by both ambient and internal temperatures, modifying the magnetic field that is produced. These findings show that temperature can significantly influence the ability of PDSs, used in underground coal mines, to accurately determine a worker’s position in relation to mining machine.

INTRODUCTION The entire scope of new facilities for Lake Mead Intake No. 3 includes a sub-merged intake structure, a deep tunnel beneath Lake Mead, a tunnel access shaft, Intake Pumping Station No. 3, and connections to an existing intake and water treat-ment facility, as shown in Figure 1. In March 2008 Vegas Tunnel Constructors (VTC), a joint venture of Impregilo SpA and SA Healy were awarded a $447m Design-Build contract by SNWA for a section of this work (Contract 070F 01 C1), including the 185 m deep tunnel access shaft, the 4.7 km long, 6.1 m diameter tunnel and the submerged intake. Arup, supported by Brierley Associates, is the Design Engineer for VTC. The scope of the work is shown in Figure 2. This paper will describe the design and construction on this contract, with a focus on the access shaft which is the most complete section of the work. The shaft is being sunk using drill-and-blast methods with the finallining placed as excavation proceeds. The shaft passes through a major fault zone, and extensive pre-excavation grouting for water control is required for much of the depth of the shaft.

The currently known and used plastics and rubber recycling or sorting processes cannot be applied efficiently and economically due to large amounts of fine bulky materials (<3 mm). These wastes are mostly given to specialized landfill sites. Starting out from classical and traditional beneficiation processes a new research project was initiated to work on certain new ways to efficiently separate plastic material mixes. First basic results show that the use of new and improved thermal beneficiation methods is a great implementation in the field of plastics separation. The results can be further increased by a suitable combination with other methods as well. This leads to high-quality and almost pure separated plastics and rubber products, easy to sell on recycling product markets.

Although many SAG operators may agree that on-line measurement of SAG feed-size is an attractive notion, applying this information in a control strategy that recovers the investment, engineering time, and maintenance is not necessarily straightforward. The P. T. Freeport Split-Online system was justified based on the assumption that SAG feed-size could be used in a feed-forward control strategy either at the regulatory or expert system control level. Something like “as the feed size changes adjust the throughput to avoid under or overloading the mill” was envisioned. However, following installation and calibration, Cluster Analysis showed that such an approach would not be successful. However, the sensor has been successfully integrated into Freeport’s grinding control strategy other ways. It provides an input to the Kalman filter parameter estimator used in a model-based control strategy that optimizes throughput and grind. The Split sensor also provides a characteristic feed size parameter for use in an on-line work index estimator. This paper describes the calibration and installation of the Split SAG feed-size analyzer, and reviews the evolution of its use in the Freeport C3 grinding circuit control strategy.

A pilot plant was constructed to attrition scrub and deslime North Carolina phosphate ore. A 15.2 cm (6 in.) diameter pilot-scale Linatex Hydrosizer was used for desliming. Four tests were run at a throughput of 2.9 t/hr/m2 (0.30 ton/hr/f t2) and a teeter bed density of 1.12-1.13 g/cm3. The teeter water flow rate was varied to create an upflow velocity ranging from 0.25-0.47 cm/s. (This latter value is equal to the terminal settling velocity of a 200 mesh (74 micron) particle having a density of 2.7 g/cm3.) The recovery of +200 mesh oversize to the sizer underflow was 95%-96%, regardless of the teeter flow rate. The recovery of -200 mesh undersize to the sizer overflow increased from about 90% at 0.25 cm/sec to 100% at 0.47 cm/sec. A metallurgical balance that was conducted for one of the tests showed that less than 2% of the phosphatic value was lost to the overflow. A fifth test was run using an upflow velocity of 0.47 cm/sec; however, the teeter bed density was maintained at 1.05 cm/sec. This change had the effect of reducing the cut point (d50), while maintaining complete slime removal.

Over the past several years, the mining and minerals market was overloaded with discussions around reviving mature terminologies like distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), and the ?new comers?: hybrid control systems (HCS) and programmable automation controllers (PAC) and, in parallel, which technologies would be more appropriate for mining and mineral processing applications. Ten years ago, a careful comparative analysis would make more sense. Control approaches had very distinctive differences where users needed to choose the right approach.

In 1991, LTV Steel Mining decided to close an open-pit taconite mine in northeastern Minnesota using a passive-treatment approach consisting of limiting infiltration into the stockpiles and wetland treatment to remove metals. More than 50 Aft (55 million st) of sulfide-containing waste had been stockpiled adjacent to the mine during its 30 years of operation. Drainage from the stockpiles contained elevated levels of copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc. Nickel is the major trace metal in the drainages. Before the closure, the annual median concentrations ranged from 1.5 to 50 mg/L. Copper, cobalt and zinc are also present but they are generally less than 5% of the nickel values. Median pH levels range from 5 to 7.5, but most of the stockpile drainages have pH levels greater than 6.5. Based on the chemical composition of each stockpile, a cover material was selected. The higher the potential that a stockpile had to produce acid drainage, the lower the permeability of the capping material required Covers ranged from overburden soil removed at the mine to a flexible plastic liner. Predictions of the reduction in infiltration ranged from 40% for the native soil to more than 90% for the plastic liner. Five constructed wetlands have been installed since 1992. They have removed 60% to 90% of the nickel in the drainages. Total capital costs for all the infiltration reduction and wetlands exceeded $6.5 million, but maintenance costs are less than 1 % of those for an active treatment plant. Because mine-drainage problems can continue for more than 100 years, the lower annual operating costs should pay for the construction of the wetland-treatment systems within seven years.

The need to optimize surface mining operations has led to the use of discrete event simulation (DES) modeling of truck-shovel systems. Often, these models assume truck cycle times are independent and identically distributed (iid) random variables, although, with significant bunching on the haul routes, this may not be valid. The objective of this paper is to present a methodology to (i) account for truck bunching due to slow trucks; and (ii) test for cycle time dependence (i.e. whether truck cycle time data is iid or not). We built a DES model that accounts for bunching due to a slow truck(s) and used the cycle times as data for further analysis. We then tested for cycle time dependence using Pearson correlation coefficients. The results show significant correlation of truck cycle times for different number slow trucks, with variable speeds. Assuming iid in modeling results in over-estimation of productivity and the uncertainty surrounding it. The over-estimation of uncertainty is pronounced when the relative difference in truck speed increases. The confidence interval of the means of truck loads/shift decreases with increasing number of slow operators. This work extends the usefulness of DES in truck-shovel applications.

The more than 40,000 mining industry professionals that are expected to attend the National Mining Association’s(NMA) MINExpo International2000 trade show and conference will be treated to the exhibition’s largest display ever. The exhibit is expected to cover more than 60,385 m2(650,000 sq ft) and feature more than 1,300 exhibitors. The event is set for Oct. 9-12, 2000 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV. Richard L. Lawson, NMA’s president and chief executive officer, said, “MINExpo 2000 will showcase everything that mining is proudest of. This is the largest premier mining exposition in the world.” MINExpo is held every four years.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities, and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations, or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life, and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training. Like most of you, I would rather work on a job than talk about it. But it is fruitful to spend some time taking stock of important developments in the heavy construction field. One of the strongest recent movements affecting the industry has been the push for safety. I regret that it is a recent development. Not that builders were against safety. Too often though, it was easier to continue with dangerous old work methods than to try something new. Too often, it was easier for equipment manufacturers to build production tools with little consideration for worker safety. And too often, accidents and gruesome disasters occurred. The ultimate result of on-the-job injuries in construction and other industries was the Federal Government&apos;s Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Individual states were required either to accept OSHA or pass updated regulations at least as stringent as the Federal requirements. These new rules must be strictly obeyed -- not just because they carry civil and criminal sanctions -- but because they correct unsafe conditions and reduce hazardous acts. Though some OSHA measures have been criticized as superfluous, most of them do in fact save lives and limbs. Equally important, the tunneler who follows the new safety regulations can be fairly certain of an efficient, uninterrupted operation. Regulations do sometimes bring rewards.

Face and pillar bursts, bumps and bounces are violent failures that occur in underground coal mines in response to a complicated interplay of face and pillar geometry, seam depth, coal properties and interactions between roof, seam and floor strata. Additional complications arise from the presence of gas, mainly methane, and associated pressure and flow that vary with time and are further influenced by the rate of face advance. Where gas plays a dominant role, the term outburst is often used; where stress concentration is primary, terms such as burst, bump or bounce may be used. Hargraves [1983] presents an often cited review of outburst phenomena with emphasis on Australian conditions. Beamish and Crosdale [1998] indicate outbursts have occurred for over a hundred years and present tabulations of outburst numbers in major coal basins throughout the world. A central consideration is the rate of depressurization that occurs in the course of mining. Outbursts are not limited to coal seams and adjacent strata; they also occur in salt and potash mines [Molinda et al 1988]. Stress concentration and gas pressure act in consort, so the combined action is important to understanding the mechanics of bursts or outbursts and to the development of measures to reduce the associated hazard. Gas flow is a complicated phenomenon associated with diffusion of gas from micro-pores and the flow of gas along cleats. Laboratory measurements indicate both are dependent on stress and pressure [Harpalani and Ouyang 1998]. Moreover, gas permeability in porous media is often many times water permeability [Klinkenberg 1941]. However, there is also evidence that gas and water permeability are similar at elevated stress and follow Darcy?s law [Dabous et al]. Gas flow is also of importance to mine ventilation. Price et al [1973] in cooperation with personnel of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines developed finite difference models to estimate methane emission in mines in the Pocahontas No. 3 and Pittsburg seams using a premining pressure of 4.69 MPa (680 psi) and Darcy&apos;s law implying laminar flow. However, the effects of stress were not taken into account. In this regard, mine measurements of permeability are usually based on Darcy?s law [Peide 1990]. Early models of gas flow with stress effects were one-dimensional in space and time (x,t) and were developed with the goal of estimating the gas pressure profile from the face into the seam as time passed [Schlanger and Paterson 1987, Zou and Yu, 1999]. A zone of high permeability adjacent to the mining face was recognized in these early models. Later models based on the popular finite element method allowed two spatial dimensions (x,y) and variation in time (t) and for coal seam heterogeneity [Tang et al, 2002]. Zhu et al [2007] formulated a set of nonlinear equations involving a complicated stress-pressure-permeability relationship for application to coal seam gas flow and concluded the coupling was important but failure of coal should also be considered. Wold et al [2008] used a hybrid finite difference - finite element model interleaved with a reservoir simulation model to study outbursts based on extensive mine and laboratory measurements. An important feature of the modeling was the use of spatially variable material properties and Monte Carlo simulation to obtain quantitative estimates of outburst conditions and probabilities. Connell [2009] used the same reservoir simulation model as Wold but used the popular finite difference code FLAC3D for hydro-mechanical responses to evaluate two permeability relationships, one depending on porosity and the other on stress, and concluded that permeability changes with gas production were more complex than computed by either permeability model. Gadde [2010] in an integrated laboratory and field study of coal pillar strength explored the effect of spatial variability and concluded that design based on average strength was acceptable in some circumstances, although gas pressure was not an issue. Liu et al [2011] also applied a FLAC code to analyze two-dimensional gas flow and deformation of layered but homogeneous strata in a Chinese coal mine using a strain-softening model and concluded that damage and gas pressure were important to strata safety relative to the case without gas.
