The Institute revived a valuable tradition when, on the 19th of March, 1983, it held its first 'annual' banquet in some fifteen years. It was such a sparkling success that it is sure to be held more frequently in future. The success of the occasion was borne out by the fact that the main banqueting hall at the Wanderers Club was filled to capacity, with over four hundred members and guests.

Some years ago, the authors developed an analysis of non-Newtonian pipe flow based on enhanced turbulent microscale and associated sub-layer thickening. This analysis, which can be used for various rheologic modelling equations, has in the past been applied to smooth-walled pipes. The present paper extends the analysis to rough walls, using the popular Bingham plastic equation as a representative rheological behaviour in order to prepare friction-factor plots for comparison with measured results. The conditions for laminar-turbulent transition for both smooth and rough walls are also considered, and comparisons are made with earlier correlations and with experimental data.

The results of slow crushing tests in a stiff testing machine for both small and large step reductions of particle size are given. The energy consumption required to produce a given weight of minus 74 um material was determined when both single-crystal quartz and Witwatersrand reef were crushed. For comparison the two materials tested were also comminuted in a ball mill under optimum conditions. There are indications that slow crushing under stiff conditions is the most efficient method of breakage that can be devised. The comparison with ball milling results thus yields a value for the efficiency of ball milling of approximately 80 per cent. These results confirm that the best current estimates of milling efficiency, which are based on the free boundary surface energy of the material being milled, are probably too low by at least one order of magnitude.

Tests were conducted during the middle of this year to evaluate techniques and the equipment used in a novel continuous mining system for use in narrow reef tabular orebodies. Equipment was designed and supplied to test a mechanized drilling rig, a selection of rock breaking techniques and an integrated rock removal system, mounted on a self-advancing reciprocating flight conveyer. As the rock breaking techniques do not depend on the use of large quantities of conventional explosive the systems and equipment employed here have the potential to run continuously for 24hours per day. Whilst the tests carried out use simple prototype equipment employing established technologies, the long-term objective remains the use of sophisticated machinery capable of running continuously and un-manned, only interrupted by brief service intervals. Three groups of unacclimatized men were subjected to five-day climatic-room procedures at wet-bulb temperatures of 29,30, and 31 C respectively. The findings indicated that individuals reach a satisfactory level of heat acclimatization for work in environmental temperature conforming to those at which they were acclimatized. It is, therefore, superfluous to acclimatize men at wet-bulb temperatures that exceed those at which they are destined to work. These methods of acclimatization can be linked advantageously to heat-tolerance testing at mines with suitable underground temperatures.

The Metsep Process for the separation and recovery of zinc, iron, and hydrochloric acid from spent pickle liquors by T. H. TUNLEY, B.Sc. (Ch em. Eng.) (Visitor), P. KOHLER (Visitor), and T. D. SAMPSON, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.), B.Econ. (Visitor) A spray roaster has been installed in the Johannesburg area for the treatment of spent liquors from a variety of small pickling operations. A new process was developed for the processing of the liquor that is contaminated with zinc chloride, and a commercial plant was built incorporating this process. An ionexchange plant separates the zinc from the iron chloride, and a liquid-liquid-extraction plant converts the zinc chloride to zinc sulphate and recovers the hydrochloric acid.

The Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) held their fifth successive annual seminar at Observation City, Scarborough, in Perth on 15th November, 1990. The title of the seminar was 'Strategies for Grade Control'. The Seminar attracted 158 delegates, including 10 speakers. In addition to geoscientists, the attendees included mining engineers, metallurgists, and mining analysts. The welcoming address was given by Rob Duncan, Chairman of the Westem Australian Branch of AIG, who said there is a strong demand for this type of seminar in Western Australia (WA). It helps geoscientists to keep up with former colleagues and to keep abreast of technical developments.

The relationships between mill power and pebble load, bulk density of the load, and circulating load were investigated on the pebble mills in the grinding circuit at Buffelsfontein Gold Mine. This paper describes the most significant relationships among the operating and control variables on the plant, and illustrates these by reference to experimental data gathered from the plant during operation. The results were used for the development of very successful multivariable peak-seeking controllers for the pebble load and bulk density of the load on these pebble mills. The peak-seeking control algorithms are described in detail. The control system has operated successfully at Buffelsfontein for more than 18 months and is still in operation.

The authors and Iscor's management are to be congratulated on an interesting and detailed paper that discloses Iscor's philosophy, strategy, and action concerning what can also be termed productivity improvement. Aside from the pioneering work of Beeforth and Dicks regarding Dynamic Profitability Analysis at Vaal Reefs, there appears to be a shortage of papers on this topic from the mining groups.

Union Corporation are experimenting with a high-pressure water jet to remove blasted rock from short panels. The advantages are that the jet provides a highly efficient, flexible, and mobile cleaning tool that eliminates much of the lashing. Cost estimates show it to compare favourably with the existing system, with potential savings of 30 cents per ton milled. Equipment and method trials are continuing with the ultimate objective of eliminating hand lashing entirely while retaining the flexibility of the present method of mining.

The Copperbelt areas of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have recently been seeing the development of a significant number of new projects. Due to the current economic climate, some of these projects have been delayed but the region remains an important resource for copper and cobalt for future years. Many of these projects will utilize an agitation leach followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning to recover both copper and cobalt. The flowsheet route for copper is fairly well established while the processing options for cobalt vary considerably depending on the final product (metal or salt) the operator wishes to make. The mineralogy of ores in the area is typically associated with high gangue acid consumption during the leaching process. This has resulted in acid availability to the area being constrained and acid prices have risen accordingly. Agitation leach circuits, typically, have a tight water balance which needs to be maintained and a bleed of process liquor needs to be continuously removed from the circuit in order to maintain this balance. This bleed, typically, contains fairly high levels of acid and requires neutralization prior to tailings disposal or secondary metal recovery. It is, therefore, desirable to minimize the acid concentration in this bleed stream in order to decrease total acid requirements and neutralization costs for the process plant. An in depth case study by Cognis and Bateman Engineering evaluated three different flowsheets with the aim of determining relative operating costs between the three alternatives, together with differences in plant capital cost requirements.

In many automated mines, multi media video and audio funtionality has to be combined with sensor information or steering commands, which is the idea of a new, PC based integrated and multi media capable control system. The new control system (Multimedia Control - MMC) bases entirely on TCP/IP networking and internet technology. For the first time, this enables the ‘intelligent’ use of video and audio information: pictures and voice sequences may be forwarded on request only, they may be stored if particular events occur (e.g. video black boxes) and sensor signals as well as actions from the automation system can directly be assigned with multi media sequences. MultiMedia Control entirely bases on object oriented software. It uses most modern software technology. As user interface, only a standard web browser is required. This makes the handling of different machines easy. By using mobile web pads, dedicated local operator interfaces are not required any longer. The service staff just connects to the automated equipment by – wireless –LAN to make required adjustments. Customization is easy using an open Application Programming Interface. Software modules may be added to the system without touching or recompiling existing components. The system was prototyped in 2000 using a demo-application. The performance tests showed very positive results both regarding the control system behaviour and the speed/latency timing behaviour of the multi-media information processed. The system now is slightly reshaped to completely meet the final product requirements. It is expected to be available by the end of 2001. MINING IN SOUTH AFRICA Mining is the single most important contributor to this country's foreign-exchange earnings. Minerals and processed mineral products together account for about 70 per cent of South Africa's total foreign exchange earnings. The mining sector employs in excess of 670 000 people, and is one of the largest employers in the country. The construction and development of cities and towns like Johannesburg, Welkom, Orkney, Springs, Benoni, Witbank, and Klerksdorp is a direct result of the contributions of the mining industry to economic activity in these areas, as well as of the multiplier effect of secondary industries.

Simulation is a way to obtain quickly today future information on how planned systems will most likely behave in various selected situations. This information may then be used to optimize the system and its components and maximize the performance and output. Simulation is a way to fine-tune the layout, match the mobile fleet and optimize the schedule and the way of working to meet the desired production requirements. Simulation provides a glimpse of the upcoming operation, ‘future today’ and helps to predict its restrictions and sensitivity to various aspects. OptiMine™, the Sandvik Tamrock Corp. and CyberCube Oy developed simulation tool is designed to simulate underground rock flow and match suitable technology with various layout options. This tool can be used to view what-if situations and determine what kind of impact mastered changes have to production. The findings of critical points in the layout and working procedures at an early stage of a new mine can help to optimize the layout and material flow. OptiMine™is modular based simulation tool that combines the supplier machine knowledge and traffic guidance with mine operational know-how and mine environment. It is developed to work in a way that an effect of an individual incident, such as the effect of one additional turn in a continuous loading cycle to the daily capacity can be identified. The reported output can be used for economical impact evaluation of selected options. This paper discusses the use of simulation in general and the way the OptiMine™ simulation tool operates and how it may be used for operation, technology and material flow optimization.

I am a partner in a minerals' development company called A.B.F. Limited, that does minerals development in Africa and Asia. I have read your very fine magazine often at the Colorado School of Mines Library in Golden, Colorado. I would like to ask your assistance in trying to locate a South African smelter; preferably on the coast, but not totally necessary for the project, that can separate the first four metals (Au, Ag, Cu, and Pb).
