Terminals form part of the transportation chain from producer to consumer in the world-wide conveyance of bulk commodities. As such, they are a vital link in providing a buffer between widely differing transporation modes. It is essential in the conceptual design of such terminals that an overall view of the entire system of which they form a part is taken. Only in this way can it be ensured that the system will operate smoothly and without disruption, for in the end such disruptions can have dramatic repercussions, both on the cost of the commodity in the market place and on production. In this respect, computer simulation is a useful tool in arriving at the optimum design for the system. The Richards Bay Coal Terminal provides a good example of such an approach. Commissioned in 1976 to handle 12 Mt per annum, it is now handling 24 Mt per annum, with plans for further expansion to 44 Mt per annum in the future.

P.W.D. ROSTER OF CONSULTING ENGINEERS (Extract from a letter from the Secretary for Public Works) In recent years a large number of professional engineers has entered the consulting field. Although the names of most of these have been placed on the Department's roster of consulting engineers either as a result of representations made by the South African Association of Consulting Engineers or by applying direct to the Department there are still some who seem to think that canvassing through an influential person is necessary to obtain commissions from the Department. The Department's roster is open to all registered professional engineers who are suitably experienced to undertake consulting work and commissions are awarded strictly on merit. I shall appreciate it, therefore, if registered professional engineers who wish to be considered for commissions by the Department could be advised that they must apply, in the first instance, to be placed on the Department's roster. On receipt of such an application a questionnaire listing all the information required by the Department will be forwarded to the applicants for completion and returning to the Department for record purposes. All names which appear on the roster are taken into account when a commission has to be awarded, due consideration being given to factors such as geographical position, seniority, capability and compatibility. AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MINING ENGINEERS 1970 FALL MEETING AND EXHIBIT The Secretary for Commerce has passed to us a letter received from the American Society of Mining Engineers, reading as follows: "We would be delighted to have South Africa attend our meeting next year and to exhibit some of their mining equipment in our Technological Information Exchange. The 1970 SME Fall Meeting and Exhibit will be held in St. Louis, Mo., October 21-23, 1970, at the Kiel Auditorium. The AIME WorId Conference on Lead & Zinc Mining and Metallurgy will be an integral part of our meeting-and an added incentive to attend. It should be understood that we discourage the showing of actual mining equipment and encourage the manufacturers and suppliers to send their engineers to man the booths. We hope that the exhibits will endeavour to put across their story by means of photographs, drawings, models and literature, rather than by display of prototypes of the actual equipment. We will be happy to welcome manufacturerers from South Africa as well as the mining engineers who, from time to time, have registered at our meetings." Book news 1. Book reviews ? Prospecting in areas of desert terrain. London, The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, 1985. 283 pp. £28 (members £25,20). Reviewer: J.S. Mostert This publication records the proceedings of a con¬ference convened to deal exclusively with prospecting in areas of desert terrain. The meeting, organized jointly by The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (London) and the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Morocco, was held in Rabat from 14th to 17th April, 1985, and generated considerable international interest. Exploration cam¬paigns and case studies of successful discoveries in the desert areas of more than 14 lands are described. Since large areas of South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia are characterized by and and semi-arid terrains, this publication should be of considerable interest to explorationists and mining engineers engaged in the search for and development of mineral deposits in southern Africa. The fact that the desert terrains of southern Africa are host to a number of important base-metal (Aggeneys, Gamsberg, Prieska, and O'Okiep) and diamond deposits (Orapa, Jwaneng) has ensured continued interest in these areas from the viewpoints of exploration and mining.

SYNOPSIS This report outlines the development of a model to simulate the radiometric sorting of gold- and uranium-bearing ores. The developed program indicates the optimum mass, reject percentage, and expected reject gold and uranium grades for a radiometric sorter. It achieves this by statistical analysis of the data gathered from a large sample of rocks in the required size range for a particular mine. The program can be used in the optimization of existing sorters, as a design tool for new radiometric sorters, and in feasibility studies on radiometric sorting.

The results obtained from the operation of a batch centrifugal ball mill are reported, together with the development of a model for the behaviour of a particle in free flight within the mill, and the introduction of a cumulative breakage rate function. Schumann and Rosin-Rammler plots show the change in particle-size distribution with time at various configurations of the mill. Graphs showing the rate of production of fines and the rate of breakage of coarse particles are included.

Consideration is given to the problem of the estimation, from limited data, of the likely grade and tonnage for a new mining property that is to be exploited by the selective mining of two metals that have substantial contributions to make to the total revenue. In particular, the case of a new gold and uranium mine in South Africa is analysed as follows. (I) The applicability of the underlying lognormal bivariate model for different support (i.e. ore unit) sizes is examined. (2) The necessary parameters for the bivariate lognormal models for different block sizes are estimated from abundant chipsampling data from a section of the Hartebeestfontein Gold Mine using alternative approaches, and the results are compared. (3) A method is given for obtaining the necessary parameters for a tonnage-grade relationship relative to a joint pay limit from the very limited information likely to be available at the end of the exploration stage of a gold mine, and the results are compared with those obtained from the large volume of data available from a minedout area.

An understanding of wear in systems conveying solids is extremely important from the standpoints of design and economics. The lifetime of any bulk solids-handling system depends on the type of solids present and the operating parameters of the transportation system. The relationship between wear in backfill pipelines on South African gold mines and the transportation system's operating parameters is well understood. However, the effect of the transported solids on the pipe wear is less well understood, because of an inability to characterize particle sharpness. The sharpness of the particles, together with their size and hardness, is responsible for the aggressivity of particles, or their ability to cause damage and wear. This paper presents a novel method for the characterization of particle sharpness. The results presented rank particles according to the sharpness of their surfaces.

Anglo Platinum have perceived a need to increase the rate of reef development both for new mechanised stoping technology and on conventional new developing mines. The Research and Development Division of Anglo Platinum therefore initiated an experimental reef raise project with a tunnel boring machine (TBM) at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM). The scope of the trial was for the boring of a reef raise 340 metres in length on the Merensky Reef. The boring phase of the trial took place over six months and the average rate of penetration of the TBM was 0,47 metres/hour. TBM utilisation was 22%. The TBM used in the trial was a Jarva MK6 manufactured in 1972 and its design with its backup system was not considered to be an ideal machine for reef development. However it was the intention of the trial to prove the concept of developing with a TBM on reef. In this respect the trial was unequivocally a success. There were many problems and long delays did occur during the boring phase. Nevertheless there is every confidence that a new TBM can be designed specifically for this type of work that will achieve high rates of advance up to (say) 400metres/month and with a more flexible steering system in order to negotiate reef changes. It can therefore be expected that TBMs will be used in the future for reef development on South African platinum mines.

SYNOPSIS The effects of concurrent recovery, prior creep deformation and concurrent high temperature fatigue on the coarsening of some carbides in steels have been studied. It was found that concurrent recovery enhances the coarsening rate by orders of magnitude and prior creep deformation causes an enhancement of about two times. Finally, concurrent fatigue causes an initial greatly enhanced coarsening rate but after prolonged cycling dissolution of the carbides occurs.

The established shared laboratory facilities between the Departments of Metallurgy and Chemical Engineering of the Vaal Triangle Technikon and the University of Potchefstroom are already proving to be a great success.

The hard rock gold and platinum mines in South Africa have seen little development in the technology of mining. Holes are still drilled in the rock—though the latest water hydraulic rockdrills will complete that task in two minutes compared with the eight hours for hand drilling. Charging up is with far safer explosives and with available initiation systems it is no longer necessary to run up the face lighting each fuse. Movement of rock in the stope is predominantly by means of scraper buckets and scraper winches — these were first introduced in the 1920s.Support is still mainly rock, either in sit pillars or backfill, or alternatively wood. Just as themining process has changed very little it is hardly surprising that the productivity of mining is also relatively unchanged. Major efforts have been made to mechanize the mining process. However, most of the narrow reef mines where ‘trackless mechanized mining’ was introduced in the early 1980s have reverted to conventional mining. In the wider reefs mechanized mining is the option of choice, unfortunately most of the gold and platinum mines have very narrow reefs that are not suitable to’ off the shelf’ equipment. The move to introduce room-and-pillar mining into the narrow UG2reefs is at the expense of mining more waste with the reef, fortunately it appears that appropriate waste and reef separation processes are available. Room-and-pillar mining followed by long holedrilling and blasting of a narrow slot of reef out of the pillars currently appears to offer the best of both worlds—maximum reef recovery with minimum waste dilution. All these mining methods are still dependent on blasting to break the rock. The cyclic nature of mining by blasting places severe constraints on the rate of face advance that can be achieved and consequently the utilization of the invested capital. For narrow reef hard rock mining to break out of these constraints and to really make progress in the 21st century it is necessary to follow the lead of the soft rock mining industry and change the technology of mining. In the underground coal mining industry, coal cutting has been proved to be the most cost-effective solution. In narrow reef hard rock mining the future must be based on the development of non-explosive methods of rock breaking that in turn are integrated into continuous mining systems. Non-explosive so that the mining operation can be conducted on a continuous basis, with nodelays for the removal of blasting fumes. Continuous mining also maximizes the return on the capital invested in developing the mine. Rock cutting will define the stope width and that in turn will be designed to minimize waste dilution; it will also minimize damage to the hanging and create a safer environment. Mechanization makes it possible to automate the mining process and further improve safety by positioning the operators in a safer environment. This paper defines the work to evaluate cutting processes carried out by Sandvik TamrockVoest Alpine. The evaluation was in the UG2 and the pyroxenite and norite typical of the Merensky Platinum Reefs. A novel form of mining machine is proposed that will utilize existing technology. Finally the paper describes the interaction between Sandvik Tamrock Voest Alpineand Lonmin Platinum and the initiation of an agreement to develop and trial a prototype hard rock narrow reef mining machine.

The effect of microstructure on the deformation and fracture properties of 3CR12 steel was investigated at different strain rates in the temperature range -196 to 200°C. The yield stress of the as-received steel, showing a banded dual-phase microstructure, was much lower than that of the flake-like dual-phase microstructure produced by heat treatment. The heat treatment also resulted in an increase in the volume fraction of martensite. The fracture toughness of the as-received 3CR12, on the other hand, was significantly higher than that of the heat-treated material. These changes in both yield stress and fracture toughness were attributed to the effect of microstructural parameters on the constraints imposed on the deformation and subsequent failure of the ferritic phase in the as received and heat-treated steels. The exceptionally low resistance to crack extension in a plane parallel to the roiling plane of the as-received material was ascribed to the delamination process, which is typical for controlled-rolled steels. The yield stress and fracture toughness were found to depend on temperature and strain rate. The appearances of the fracture surfaces were found to be consistent with the mechanical properties.

Exceptionally low yields in the coking-coal fields of the Soutpansberg area in the northern Transvaal, are taxing the skill and ingenuity of preparation engineers. The coals are highly intergrown, and a series of crushing and washing steps may be required to extract the maximum usable tonnage. In addition, novel preparation techniques may have to be employed. This paper, which is a case study of work recently undertaken, gives a general account of raw coal properties, emphasizing those related to maximum recoveries, and outlines the steps involved in the design of appropriate flow sheets based on laboratory studies.

The loading and selective properties of a number of commercial and experimental resins developed for the extraction of base metals were evaluated. Particular applications that ",:ere considered included the extraction of copper from artificial dump liquors, the treatment of Iow-grade copper, nickel, and cobalt liquors, and the removal of nickel from a cobalt electrolyte. Reagents that showed promise were two experimental resins developed at Mintek containing pyridyl imidazole active groups and two Dow resins, XF4195 and XF4196.

Hardmetals possess extremely high hardness and wear resistance, which render them ideal for applications such as metal-cutting tools, rock-drilling tools, and industrial wear-resistant parts like dies, punches, and seals. However, hardmetals are britle, and show poor resistance to impact and shock. They can therefore rarely be used unsupported, and it is common practice to attach hard metal working parts to a more resilient tool holder or support, which is normally made of steel. . . . Owing to the widely differing physical and mechanical properties of steels and hard metals, the Joining of one to the other is problematic, and the method used must be chosen with care. This paper reviews several methods available for the joining of hardmetal to steel, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Several rate models for the adsorption of gold cyanide from aqueous solution onto activated carbon are given in the literature. The purpose of this study is to critically examine their ability to simulate the adsorption process over a wide range of conditions. An account is given of a comprehensive set of experimental work on the kinetics of gold adsorption onto a coconut shell- based activated carbon. Equilibrium isotherms were also determined. It is concluded that the homogeneous surface-diffusion model fits the experimental data reasonably well and provides a good balance between simplicity and descriptive accuracy. The model contains two parameters: the extra-particle mass-transfer coefficient and an effective intraparticle surface-diffusion coefficient. Both can be evaluated readily from simple adsorption experiments.

This paper examines the South African fiscal system as it applies to the mining industry and, where components are found wanting, discusses possible alternatives. It is concluded that the South African system has long provided a stable environment for mining investment and growth. However, the introduction, of steep surcharges during the past decade or so (since abolished) and ring fencing (since relaxed but not abolished) has started undermining this stability.

The environmentally acceptable disposal of fine-particled mining and industrial wastes by the formation of hydraulic- fill slimes dams is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the total mining endeavour. Relatively little is known of the behaviour of waste slurries during deposition. This paper describes and analyses the following aspects of slurry behaviour: (i) the relationship between viscosity, shear strength, and water content, (ii) the slope assumed by a thickened slurry, (iii) particle-size sorting on a hydraulicfill beach, (iv) gradients of hydraulic-fill beaches, and (v) internal erosion during the deposition of slurry. v083n04p073.pdf
