The plants integrated in the PhosAgro group of companies perform processes from scientific research to the project, from ore mining to shipment of fertilisers and feed additives to consumers. An extensive process chain maintains smooth interaction at all stages from research to production. As an example, the paper shows the revamp of two beneficiation plants (ANOF-2 and ANOF-3), requiring a comprehensive approach to task solving. The intention of the revamp was to increase the total yield of apatite and nepheline concentrate, taking into account the gradual decline in the quality of ore being processed and ensuring the yield stability of final products during re-equipment of the plants. At ANOF-3, the crushing and grinding cycle was modernised, the production of nepheline concentrate was implemented, and the capacity of apatite flotation, dehydration, and drying was increased. At ANOF-2 a new process chain was implemented for the production of apatite concentrate in workshops previously used for the production of nepheline concentrate. The main building was withdrawn from operation, where ore grinding, apatite flotation and apatite concentrate thickening had been carried out. The total increase in apatite concentrate yield at two beneficiation plants was 1.3 times. A further increase in concentrate production is planned. The Tati Activox® Project will be the first full-scale implementation of the patented Activox® process (The Tati Activox® project was deferred in 2008. Please refer to the Norilsk Nickel press issue on the topic for more info). The process was developed by Norilsk Process Technology and has been tested on Tati mine sulphide concentrates in laboratory, pilot and demonstration plant scales and demonstrated its viability. There are inherent risks to the final scale-up of the process from the demo plant and one of them will be investigated in this paper. Compartment 1 is designed to leach approximately 77% of the total nickel leached. For this reason agitation requirements in the first compartment of the autoclave are reviewed. An attempt is made to minimize the process and mechanical risks associated in achieving oxygen mass transfer into the slurry solution. The agitator powers for oxygen mass transfer are calculated using empirical correlations and compared to demonstration plant testwork. The resulting gassed power per unit volume (P/V) is higher than most commercial autoclaves and raises uncertainty on the viability of using such high unit power inputs. Additionally, there is concern about the ability of the autoclave shell to withstand and support the higher loading of large agitators. An alternative solution to designing for the increased P/V is assessed in which the number of compartments within the autoclave is reduced from 5 to 4 by removing the compartment wall separating compartments 1 and 2. This results in an enlarged first compartment containing 3 agitators instead of 2. Therefore the compartment 1 oxygen demand is supplied through 3 agitators, which lowers the P/V per agitator. The reduction in the number of autoclave compartments raises the potential for short-circuiting the mean flow pattern by slurry particles. Short-circuiting and low velocity zones could result in a lower recovery of metal and localized hot spots, respectively. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis was conducted to quantify these concerns and also to evaluate further design considerations. The results indicate that the proposed design change to 4 compartments affects short-circuiting. The impact of increased short-circuiting on the overall autoclave recoveries is not quantified, however; it is expected to be negligible based on testwork done in the Tati Demonstration Plant and similar modifications made to another operating autoclave. The CFD analysis also suggests that there will be no low velocity zones within the compartment.

There are many underground mining software tools available to plan and schedule the development of underground mines. A shortfall of these tools is the optimization of the underground equipment and strategy in order to maximize the development rate. This paper will illustrate how the SimMine® software was used to maximize underground development at Petra Diamonds' Cullinan Diamond Mine. It will also determine the effect of various development strategies and equipment capacities on the underground development rate and pinpoint potential bottlenecks in the mine development cycle.

In a cobalt precipitation plant, phosphoric acid is used to eliminate excess uranium from the pregnant leach solution, resulting in a cobalt hydroxide product that has little uranium contamination. However, the amount of phosphoric acid added must be monitored and controlled to avoid financial and sustainability impacts and to prevent negative impacts on the final product quality. One possible solution to this problem is the use of online residual phosphorus measurement techniques to regulate the addition. By continuously monitoring the residual phosphorus levels in the solution, the plant can adjust dosing in real time to maintain the target residual phosphorus level. As a result, the cobalt precipitation plant can improve phosphorus level control, lowering the risk of overdosing, and ensuring consistent product quality. This approach can also improve process efficiency, reduce operational costs, and have a positive environmental impact

Altering the microstructure in order to improve the tensile properties of bow shackles resulted in inconsistency in the fatigue performance. This raises the question whether the inconsistency in fatigue life can be attributed to microstructural changes along the profile of the shackle or to decarburization at the surface. Bow shackles forged from 080M40 (EN8) material were subjected to different heat treatments in order to alter the microstructure. The shackles were subjected to five different fatigue load cases, which represented typical loads experienced at termination points for an overhead power line with a span length of 400 m, with changes in conductor type, configuration, wind, and ice loading. Although the change in microstructure does improve both the tensile and fatigue performance, we found that the depth of the decarburization layer has a greater effect on the high cycle fatigue life of bow shackles than the non-homogeneous microstructure.

"Electron microbeam analysis of metallurgical samples covers a broad field and has applications in the areas of minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, physical metallurgy and corrosion.Some idea of the possibilities of microbeam techniques can be illustrated by examining the following example of a run of mine gold ore sample. Milling and bulk chemical analysis of the ore will provide major and minor element analysis as well as the gold grade. More detailed chemistlY can also reveal the presence of trace elements that may be advantageous or deleterious to downstream processing. Electron microbeam analysis can provide additional information in the form of - size, liberation, association and composition of the gold, the percentage of refractory gold, the size, liberation, association and composition of enclosing sulphide or arsenide phases and the levels and association of the trace elements that may affect processing. In most cases electron microbeam analysis compliments bulk chemistry, and does not replace it. Both techniques should be used in parallel for maximum effect.This paper touches on the origin and history of electron microbeam techniques, as well as the theory behind microbeam analysis and processing. The more common types of instruments and their applications will also be dealt with briefly - more details on, and examples of, the applications and choice of technique will be covered in the presentation.Mosely first discovered, in 1913, that the frequency of emitted X-radiation excited by an electron beam is a function of the atomic number of the analysed element. This discovery led to the development of spectrochemical analysis. The forerunners of the electron microanalysers of today, however, were only invented during the nineteen fifties. The electron microprobe was developed in parallel by Castaing and Guinier in France and by Borovski in Russia, but Castaing's design was the basis of modern microanalysers. The initial area of analysis was brought down from over 1 mm2 to less than 2 µm, as it is today. In 1956 Cosslett and Duncumb invented the scanning electron microprobe, where a beam of electrons could be scanned across an area of a sample. This, in turn, led to the development of the electron microprobe with both scanning and point analysis capabilities that we know today.Essentially, all electron microbeam instruments operate by the production of a beam of electrons from a filament in a vacuum (i.e. an electron gun). The electron beam leaves the gun and is accelerated and focused by a series of electromagnetic lenses while passing down an evacuated column. The electrons eventually strike the surface of the sample to be analysed and may travel through a thin sample (transmitted electron microscopy) or react with a thicker sample to produce several reflected kinds of radiation."

The results of trials with three stope-face cleaning systems are described. Two of these systems were based on armoured chain conveyors, and the third on a reciprocating-flight conveyor. The operational elements of each system are discussed with reference to their effectiveness, and many problems are highlighted. It is concluded that the reciprocating-flight conveyor is superior, and has the potential for being developed into a system yielding a labour productivity of more than 30 m2 per worker per month and a face advance of 15 m per month working one shift a day.

"The Kamoa-Kakula copper project—a joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines, Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd, and the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo—has been independently ranked as the world's largest undeveloped high-grade copper discovery by international mining consultant Wood Mackenzie. It is a very large, near-surface stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas within the Central African Copperbelt, approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 km west of the provincial capital of Lubumbashi. A phased development approach is currently envisaged. The first phase of the project involves the development of a 6 Mt/a underground mine and surface processing complex (dual stream concentrator) at the Kakula deposit, a discovery announced in early 2016. The second phase involves an integrated 12 Mt/a two-stage development, beginning with initial production from the Kakula mine, to be followed by a subsequent, separate underground mining operation at the nearby Kansoko mine, along with the construction of a smelter. Project description and locationThe Kamoa–Kakula project comprises a newly discovered, very large stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas, located within the Central African Copperbelt in Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Kamoa–Kakula project lies approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi and about 270 km west of Lubumbashi. Ivanhoe owns a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding, an Ivanhoe subsidiary that currently owns 80% of the project. Zijin Mining owns a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding, which it acquired from Ivanhoe in December 2015 for an aggregate cash consideration of US$412 million. The remaining 1% interest in Kamoa Holding is held by privately-owned Crystal River.The Kamoa–Kakula project consists of the Kamoa exploitation licences (exploitation permits 12873, 13025, and 13026, which cover an area of 397.4 km2) and one exploration licence (exploration permit 703 covering an area of 12.74 km2). The Kamoa exploitation licences, approved 20 August 2012, grant Kamoa Copper the right to explore for, develop, and exploit copper and other minerals, for an initial 30-year term, expiring on 19 August 2042. The permits can then be extended for 15-year periods until the end of the mine’s life."

n interesting situation arose last week when two Vaal River residents wrote to me (and a third telephoned) giving me details of how Sasol wanted to develop an open-cast coal mine on the south bank of the Vaal, just upstream of the Barrage. This is agricultural land and is across the river from Millionaire?s Row, where a number of wealthy people have built river-side mansions. The mine would be hidden by a 30 m-high (10 storeys) earth wall set 300 m back from the edge of the river. It could operate 24 hours a day.

The Electrometallurgy and Electrochemistry Workshop organized by Dr Ian Corans was held at two venues: .Perth on 9th May, 1990, attended by 30 people . Kalgoorlie on 11th May, 1990, attended by 28 people. The workshop had four speakers: Dr Roger Paul, Director of the Process Chemistry Division at Mintek, who introduced the course with the theory of basic electrochemistry and electrowinning; Dr Peter Spencer of Bactech, who spoke on direct slurry electrolysis; Professor lan Ritchie of Murdoch University, who spoke on Zinc cementation; and Mr. Mike Costelo of Minproc, who gave an address on practical aspects of gold electrowinning in Australia. Dr Paul spoke throughout the first session and shared the remaining sessions with the other speakers.

The growing market demand for lithium is mainly due to its use in the manufacture of batteries for electric or hybrid vehicles and portable equipment (smartphones, tablets, power tools, notebooks, etc.). Currently there is great interest in finding new sources of lithium and technologies for its utilisation. Li-S batteries have received attention due to their theoretically high specific energy density, which is 3 to 5 times greater than that of Li-ion batteries. Unlike Li-ion batteries, of which the main raw materials are lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, the main raw material for Li-S batteries is lithium chloride. The anode used in Li-S batteries is metallic lithium, produced by a molten lithium chloride electrolysis process. The extraction of lithium from pegmatites such as spodumene, previously abandoned in the 1990s for being uneconomical, has become attractive due to the increase in prices as well as the need for greater lithium purity of products made from lithium-bearing minerals. The main methods used for lithium recovery from spodumene ore include the sulfuric acid process, the alkaline process (lime or limestone as raw material) and the chlorination roasting process. Thermodynamic modelling using HSC software 5.1 was conducted to predict different reactions that could occur during chlorination roasting of the spodumene/MgCl2+CaCl2 system. Lithium extraction from the solid obtained after the chlorination roasting was also investigated. The results of thermodynamic analysis provided a better understanding of the chlorination roasting process for lithium extraction. Metallurgical tests with a mass ratio of 1:6 (spodumene:chlorides) and molar ratio of 2:1 (MgCl2:CaCl2) allowed over 95% recovery of the lithium contained in the spodumene concentrate. This paper reviews the history, sources, mineralogy, extraction metallurgy, conversion, and enrichment of uranium in South Africa. Over the past 40 years extraction plants were built at 27 sites, an9.over 140 kt of uranium have been produced. Older plants have had to adapt to changing market conditions, no single technology has had the opportunity to become entrenched, and costs have been reduced to a third of those of the original flowsheet. The research efforts aimed at developing the country s nuclear raw materials have been particularly rewarding, as they have enabled South Africa to become a world leader in the extraction of uranium from low-grade ores and to develop methods for uranium enrichment and the production of nuclear fuels.

Currently, in several caving operations, the spacing between the drawpoints is determined by consulting Laubscher's design guide (Laubscher 1994, 2000), a methodology based on the gravity flow characteristics of the caved rock. Laubscher's methodology is based upon the height of interaction between adjacent flow zones, but does not allow calculation of primary recovery for a given layout. In this paper the authors present a technical and economic methodology based on the flow that occurs near the drawpoint and the associated development costs to estimate the optimal spacing. The flow model at the drawpoint was validated at the El Teniente mine, which extracts coarse caved rock. To validate the flow model, small-scale simulations using drawpoint clusters were conducted and results compared to extracted grades, marker recovery, and drill holes to determine ore remnants that are part of the production control programme at the mine. The results indicate that primary recovery depends on the height of interaction, which varies with the friction angle of the caved rock and the spacing between adjacent drawpoints. Primary recovery estimations indicate values from 85 per cent to 97 per cent depending on the drawpoint spacing used. Extrapolations were then conducted to estimate the primary recovery for different drawpoint configurations planned to be used in the New Mine Level of the mine. The results indicate that the optimal drawpoint spacing is 32 m x 20 m with a through length of 18 m. The methodology developed may be used to estimate optimal drawpoint spacing for block caving mines under different metal prices and mine cost conditions.

De Beers' Finsch Mine is situated in the Northern Cape province, 170 km northwest of Kimberley. The concentrator facility, designed and constructed by Bateman Engineering, was commissioned in 1967 and upgraded in 1979 using diamond liberation and extraction technology available at the time of design. Since then significant advances in diamond processing and technology have been made and these -have been incorporated into the new main treatment plant and recovery plant flowsheets, making diamond liberation and recovery from the Pre-1979 dumps a viable economic option at Finsch."

In this work we have reviewed methods to classify corrosivity of ground waters. Weight loss and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) corrosion tests have been done for rebar and steel strand. No clear indication of SCC was found. The application of tensile stress to 85 % of yield strength increased general corrosion rate significantly in very corrosive waters. The effect of corrosion protection on the axial behavior of steel strands was determined by double pipe axial tests with different embedment lengths. The results showed a significant difference on behavior between epoxy-coated steel strands, galvanized steel strands and plain steel strand. Dans la présente étude, nous avons passé en revue des méthodes permettant de classifier la corrosivité des eaux souterraines. Des tests portant sur les pertes de poids et sur la corrosion FCC (la fissuration par corrosion sous contrainte) ont été effectués pour les barres d’armature et les torons. Aucune indication nette de FCC n’a été constatée. L’application d’une contrainte de traction allant jusqu’à 85 % de la limite d’élasticité a accru de manière significative la vitesse générale de corrosion dans les eaux très corrosives. L’effet de la protection contre la corrosion sur le comportement axial des torons en acier a été déterminé au moyen de tests axiaux à double tube avec des longueurs d’enrobage différentes. Les résultats ont mis en évidence une différence significative quant au comportement entre les torons en acier à revêtement époxy, les torons en acier galvanisés et les torons en acier standard. In dieser Arbeit haben wir Methoden geprüft, die korrosive Wirkung des Grundwassers einstufen. Gewichtsverlust- und SCC-Korrosionstests wurden für Stahlstäbe und Drahtlitzen durchgeführt. Es wurden keine sicheren Hinweise auf Spannungsrisskorrosionsbrüche gefunden. Bei Anwendung einer Dehnbelastung von 85 % der Streckspannung bzw.Ergebnisstärke stieg die allgemeine Korrosionsrate in stark korrosivem Wasser deutlich an. Die Wirkung des Korrosionschutzes bei axialem Verhalten von Stahldrahtlitzen wurde durch axiale Tests an Doppelleitungen unterschiedlicher Versenkungslänge determiniert. Die Ergebnisse zeigten im direkten Vergleich von epoxidbeschichteten, galvanisierten und normalen Stahldrahtlitzen beachtliche Unterschiede im Verhalten auf.

Long waling is used in most Polish coal seams, with backfilling to support the roof, to create an artificial hanging wall to prevent movement if the rockmass, and to eliminate the fire hazard in abandoned mine workings. This paper discusses the results if tests conducted on 7 different backfill mixtures, and gives equations for the estimation if the flow if backfill slurries through gravitational pipelines.

"The computer methods used by the French Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique, which are applicable to any type of ore deposits, are:(i) Ore reserve estimation. The data are either the core analyses or gamma leggings. To determine the spatial distribution of the ore, three different methods of interpolation are used. Two of these are based on the least-squares theory and the third one is an application of the regionalized variable theory. The interpretations of the orebody by the geologists are introduced in the computer program as often as possible.(ii) Optimal open pit design. From the spatial distribution of ore, the three-dimensional outlines of the optimal pit are determined by a geometrical algorithm which allows different slopes varying with the azimuth.Finally, the optimization of annual successive plans arc discussed."

Application of dynamic simulation for a base metal processing plant is discussed. The plant receives ore of variable quality from two pits and blending had to be applied to maximise recovery. The plant employs multiple stage crushing, screening, dense media separation, two-stage milling, flotation and further filtration. Stockpiles and bunkers are used in the plant to cater for breakdowns and operating delays, the latter being appropriately incorporated in the model. A detail dynamic simulation model was constructed from the rock face to the filtration plant to assist the plant design, notably with definition of the ore blending method, sizing storage capacity and in-plant conveyors. The plant model was broken down to capital equipment items and various feed types and mass balances were tested to ensure that the production target is met. The dynamic simulation tested the proposed blending method, identified bottlenecks, produced risk profiles for all strategic storage facilities and overall helped minimise the project risks and improve confidence in the plant design. A review of some aspects of shaft design by G. W. HOLL, Pr. Eng., Associate of the Mine Managers Association of South Africa (Fellow)- and E. G. FAIRON, Pr. Eng., F.S.A.I.E.E., M.I. Cert. M.E.E., M.I.Mech. E., (Visitor) The reasons for the choice of vertical shafts in preference to inclined shafts of comparable capacity are set out, and the conclusion that the former are superior in virtually all circumstances is substantiated. The shapes of vertical shafts sunk during the past sixty years are recorded, and the shapes of those sunk during the past decade are analysed. From this analysis it is clear that circular and elliptical (and quasi-elliptical) shafts are the shafts of the future and that the rectangular shape will conceivably become obsolete. The determination of the size of shaft is discussed and it is forecast that shafts of a diameter of 13 metres and over will probably be sunk without difficulty in the years to come. The depth of the shaft is determined intrinsically by the Mines and Works Regulations applicable to factors pf safety of winding ropes and the design of the winding system. The Blair winder is the most suitable winder for hoisting rock, men, and material from a depth of, say, 3000 metres on an economic basis. Tertiary shafts will, therefore, be unnecessary in future deep-level mining projects at the limit of depth now envisaged. A few other factors relating to shaft design are described.

"The complex planning required to achieve any planned production yields multiple and dissociated responses over the life of project (LOP). The customary decision-making process negates the possibilities of developing optimized and integral solutions from operating levels up to business and strategic levels. This results in an inefficient project or overall underperformance of the operation.In the project setting, disconnected trade-offs and improved performance studies become inadequate, because they are site-specific and use only a few comparative parameters. They are often based on a small data-set.Decisions taken to achieve overall objectives require the correct determination and dissemination of key performance indicators (KPIs). The KPIs indicate efficiency in operation, whereby the marginal rate of technical substitution corresponds to the rate of production. It is the necessary condition for optimization. Performance realization for sustainability follows optimization modelling, the latter often being presented with financial results such as business net present value (NPV). It considers techno-financial constraints and provides a strategic and aligned outlook of KPI decisions for an enhanced and integrated outcome.This paper explains a mining case study that is rendered efficient, and through business optimization (BO) short-term and sustainable targets are reached. Business optimization increases the NPV by 14.7%. This is achieved by challenging conventional decision-making associated with maximizing business value by including environmental externalities within the LOP."
