In pyrometallurgical processes, metal oxides are reduced from molten slag through carbothermic reduction. It is of interest to evaluate the reactivity of the carbonaceous materials towards substances such as slag. Characterization techniques such as coal petrography can provide insight into the influence of feed coal properties and how they potentially dictate reductant performance. This study aimed to compare the petrographically determined organic composition of coal to reductant reactivity. Two South African medium-rank C bituminous coals and one anthracite sample were investigated together with high-carbon ferromanganese industrial slag. The reductant reactivity tests were conducted at 1500°C in a muffle furnace to assess the potential of carbonaceous reductant in reacting with the main slag components. SEM-EDS was applied to understand the extent of MnO (and to a lesser extent, SiO2) reduction from the slag. Coal 2, consisting of a greater proportion of vitrinite (59.5 vol% on a mineral matter-free basis and 54.7 vol% including mineral matter) was the most reactive reductant. The anthracite sample, with the highest inert maceral proportions (71.8 vol% including mineral matter and 76.8 vol% on a mineral matter-free basis), was the least reactive reductant.

Mixtures of MnO and graphite were reacted under argon at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1425°C, and the loss in mass of the mixture was recorded continuously. The results showed that the rate of reduction of MnO increased as the temperature increased and the ratio of MnO to C decreased. The effect of the particle size of MnO and of graphite on the rate of reduction at I350°C was very small in the range 63 to 250 µm for MnO and 45 to 355 µm for graphite. The rate of reduction at I350°C was increased markedly by the addition of Na2CO2 and K2CO3, was slightly increased by the addition of Fe2O3, was unaffected by the addition of CaO, MgO, and AI2O., and was decreased by the addition of SiO2. Some CO2 was always present in the effluent gas, and this was taken as evidence that the reduction of MnO occurred by way of CO2 as an intermediate product. The activation energy of the ratecontrolling step was 57,5 kcal, and this was similar to the measured activation energy for the gasification of graphite by CO., namely, 61,S kcal per mole of graphite. A simple kinetic model was derived on the assumption that the gasification of graphite was the ratecontrolling step, and the results over the temperature range 1200 to I425°C, when plotted in the appropriate form, yielded straight lines as predicted by the model.

The mining industry remains the backbone of many economies in the developing world. Its resurgence in Ghana since 1989 was driven by the global paradigm which emphasizes private sector-led development as the engine of economic growth in developing countries. The historical importance of mining in the economic development of Ghana is evident in the country?s colonial name, Gold Coast (Akabzaa T. and Darimani A., 2001). Ghana earned $2.5 billion from mineral exports in 2007. 20,000 people are employed in large-scale mining whilst 500,000 are employed in the small-scale sector. Mining contributes about 7% of Ghana?s total corporate tax earnings, 41% of total exports, 12% of revenue collected by the Internal Revenue Service and 5% of Gross Domestic Product (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2008). Gold dominates the mining sector and the country is Africa?s second largest gold producer after South Africa. Surface Mining, which refers to a method of extracting minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrows, requires a large tract of land for its operations (Wikipedia, 2008). There is therefore a continuous divergence of interest between land required for surface mining and other land uses such as farming and housing, among others. In recent years, surface mining has been promoted in many mining countries because of the following reasons: ?Cost considerations compared to underground mining; ?Safety considerations, compared to underground mining; ?Low grade ore which requires processing huge quantities; ?Location of the ore bodies; and ?Competition among gold producing countries for investors. This paper looks at the socio-economic impacts and challenges of surface mining by using Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. Tarkwa, Ghana as a case study. The company has a concession of about 208 sq km located in the heart of the Wassa communities in the Western Region of Ghana and undertakes surface mining like most of the other mining companies in the country. Gold Fields, Tarkwa mine produces 700,000 ounces of gold a year with the potential of increasing this output to 800,000 ounces after its current expansion programme. Some of the effects of surface mining identified were: 1. Relocation/Resettlement of host communities and its negative effects; 2. Disturbance to Flora and Fauna; 3. Disturbance to Sacred Places; 4. Land Degradation; 5. Noise and Air Pollution; and 6. Water Pollution. This paper sought to investigate the measures put in place by the government and the Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. to mitigate the above effects in order to ensure peaceful coexistence between the mining company and its host communities. It concludes that most mining companies presume the provision of socio-economic development in mining communities will lead to the company securing a social license to operate. This however is not true but rather effective community relations combined with socio-economic development. According to Gold Fields Ghana Ltds. model, this involves continuous community engagement, conflict resolution and comprehensive environmental monitoring programme which will all lead to effective community relations. The strategies to ensure socio-economic development involves community development programme, livelihood restoration programme and community training and employment. All these will then lead to sustainable development which will ensure the company?s social license to operate. Gold Fields? model is in line with the principles of responsible mining. With this model, the community feels they are part of the company and the social license of the company is guaranteed. Gold Fields? model, which has been tried and tested for the past five years, could serve as a template with suitable modification for local conditions for other mining countries where surface mines operate.

SYNOPSIS A back-analysis procedure based upon 35 mm photography was developed on a laboratory scale for the pur¬pose of determining the percentage of oversize particles known to be present in heaps of fragmented rock. Eight simple blends of crushed stone containing varying percentages of oversize on a 1:40 modelled scale were examined. Simulated test conditions for the following were subjected to the photographic study: (1) a bench heap, (2) the surface exposure of a partially excavated heap, (3) a gravity-sorted surface as occurs on an apron dump, and (4) four quadrant views of an incrementally built conical heap of rock fragments. The best back-analysis determinations were obtained from (4), the cone, over all eight blends of fragments. The mean error was within -0,16 per cent of the true value, with a range of ± 1,872. This was for oversize contents of 5 to 20 per cent where a minimum 25 per cent of the photograph area was processed by digitizer. The worst results were from the apron dump at - 1,462 per cent for a mean error of ± 4,174 per cent. The intermediate results were from the undisturbed bench at -0,186 per cent with a mean error of ±2,862 per cent.

The effects of utilizing recycled tailings pond water from the flotation plant at the Mining Company of Guemassa (MCG) on galena recovery and selectivity towards chalcopyrite (RPb-Cu) , sphalerite (RPb- Zn), and pyrrhotite (RPb-Fe) were studied at bench scale. The results showed that recycling the tailings pond water in the lead circuit without addition of fresh water gave a good flotation performance in terms of lead recovery (Rpb) (75%) and selectivity towards the other metals: RPb-Cu (54%), RPb-Zn (60%) and RPb-Fe(65%). This allows the water to be recycled at least four times. However, increasing the d80 from 100 μm to 160 μm currently used at the MCG plant had a negative effect on the lead flotation performance.

To evaluate the quantitative tunnel behavior influenced by characteristics of discontinuity, this pa-per executes the parametric study using 2 and 3-dimensional DEM analysis. First of all, this study finds that displacement and the stress of shortcrete are proportioned to frequency of joint and rockbolt axial force is adversely proportioned too. Secondly, it is found that the most sensitive in-put parameter used in Barton-Bandis(BB) model is residual friction angle. Finally, when joint sets are encountered at tunnel excavation face, to identify the most critical joint orientation is very crucial for a stability of tunnel. La thèse a pour but d’étudier les influences sur la stabilité du tunnel, au niveau du réseau de la discontinuité et de la valeur de sa nature aquis par le projet récemment exécuté en vue de mener à l’analyse quantitative de cette stabilité, en appliquant chaque différent paramètre comme la fréquence de diaclase, la constante de résistance des modèles de Barton-Bandis(BB) ainsi que la relation entre le sens d’excavation du tunnel et le réseau de diaclase en 3 dimensions. En fait, cette étude nous a montré que la fréquence de diaclase s’accroît proportionnellement au déplacement et à la contrainte du béton projeté. L’angle de friction résiduel s’est montré le plus sensible à la stabilité du tunnel parmi les modèles de BB. Aussi à travers l’analyse à 3 dimensions, il s’est vérifié que si l’angle de pente du groupe de diaclase est horizontal entre l’axe du tunnel et la direction, il donne une influence importante sur le comportement du tunnel. En particulier, l’influence était la plus importante sur un fond rocheux dont la diaclase horizontale est grande. Um das quantitative Verhalten des Tunnels zu bewerten, eroertert dieses Papier eine parametrische Studie mit Hilfe der DEM Analyse. Auch wird hier eine zweidimensionale Analyse von Ver-bindungen verschiedener Frequenzen in der Gesteinsmasse, eine sensitive Analyse von allen der im Barton-Bandis-Modell (BB) genutzten Parameter und eine Dreidimensional-Analyse mit ver-schiedenen dreidimensionalen geometrischen Veteilungen von Verbindungen ausgefuehrt. Erstens: Die Studie findet heraus, dass Vedraengung und Druck im Shortcrete proportional zur Frequenz von Verbindungen und Axialkraft der Steinbolzen antiproportinal ist. Zweitens: Es wird herausge-funden, dass die am meisten Sensitiven der im BB-Modell angewendeten Eingaben die am Ende uebriggebliebenen Reibungswinkel sind. Und schliesslich wird herausgefunden, dass wenn Ver-bindungsteile an der Tunnelaushoelungsoberflaeche ausgemacht werden, fuer die Tunnelstabiltaet die Identifikation der meist kritischen Verbindungsorientierung sehr bedeutungsvoll.

Pt-based alloys for high-temperature applications in aggressive environments have been under development for over 10 years, and are targeted to be used as either as bulk, or as coatings. The alloys comprise Pt, Al, Cr, and Ru, and the microstructure has been improved by composition to a best possible analogue of the nickel-based superalloys, which these alloys could partially replace. This was necessary because the previous best alloy had a strengthening precipitate volume proportion of only approximately 40 vol.%, whereas the nickel-based superalloys have around 70 per cent, and a lower volume would mean that the strength would not be the best that could be obtained. The microstructures were assessed using electron microscopy, and have been related to the alloys? hardness values. The current microstructures are much more like those of NBSAs, with a high proportion of the strengthening ~Pt3Al precipitates. Since the samples have to be small (platinum is expensive), hardness has been used as an indication of strength. Nano-indentation studies showed that the hardness and Young?s modulus were higher for ~Pt3Al than the (Pt) matrix. More extensive oxidation studies have been undertaken on the previous optimum sample, and the effect of cooling rate after heat treatment has also been ascertained. In addition, the samples were studied after different heat treatment times, and cross-sections were made in order to characterize the alumina scale that formed. The oxide scales of Pt-11Al-3Cr-2Ru (at.%) up to 100 h exposure did not spall, and were at least as good as those of the ternary alloys. There was no discernable Al depletion zone in the substrate, although it could have been at a greater depth than thickness of the samples studied. Further additions to the Pt-Al-Cr-Ru alloys have been studied, to increase the melting temperature as well as to reduce the platinum content without compromising the properties. Reduced platinum content would have the benefits of reduced density and cost. The target elements include vanadium and niobium, of which vanadium is of special interest, since it is a South African product. Before these additions could be made, phase equilibria studies were undertaken so that the maximum addition could be ascertained, and also to check any possible ternary phases, which could be deleterious. Work on the Pt-Al-V system revealed a ternary phase, ~V27Pt54Al19 (at.%), which has a eutectic reaction with (Pt). The maximum V addition is likely to be around 15 at.%, otherwise ~Pt3V or the ternary phase will form, and not the required (Pt)/~Pt3Al phases.

Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the ?fine? and ?coarse? size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: ? Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery ? Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery ? Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for ?fine? and ?coarse? particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

How this simple plant generates a large revenue stream. The concept behind the Tailings Scavenging Plant (TSP) is simple: it is a non-complicated modular plant which is designed to be more stable than upstream plants. This, plus the use of ?high energy?, enables the plant to recover any metal missed by the upstream operation. Impala Platinum?Mineral process started pilot plant exercises in June 2003. The pilot plant ran for one year before the capital for the full-scale plant was approved. This year was used to motivate, design and cost a full-scale plant. The metal produced during the pilot and feasibility study enabled this part of the project to run at a small profit. The scale-up to full-scale was relatively simple as the pilot plant had a capacity of 180 m3/hrand the full-scale plant was designed for a capacity of 550 m3/h. The design for the full scale plant was completed in May 2003, with ground breaking taking place on 19 May 2003. The construction phase of the project went well with the commissioning of the first two modules taking place on 22 October 2003. The remaining two modules were commissioned two weeks later. The plant was at full capacity by the 20 November 2003. A review of the plants performance for the first 5 production months is as follows: the plant has required only a few minor modifications and additions, it has run well in excess of 95%availability with no major wear apparent. In addition to this, the plant has produced 3 times the metal forecast.

Deformation of gob-side entries has always been a critical concern for ensuring stability in longwall coal mines. This paper addresses the significant deformation and support challenges that arise in thick and hard roof longwall faces (THRLF) due to dynamic pressure. The study aims to elucidate the characteristics and mechanisms of deformation during the retreat of the longwall face. The research findings indicated that the primary cause of deformation was the combination of advanced abutment stress resulting from longwall face mining and the movement of the lateral roof over the chain pillar. To mitigate this issue, we propose a deformation control method known as cutting off the lateral roof (COLR) over the chain pillar. Simulation results demonstrate a significant reduction in roof stress and deformation of the gob-side entry after implementing the lateral roof-cutting technique. These findings provide valuable guidance for effectively managing deformation in gob-side entries, particularly when dealing with thick and hard roof strata.

In this study, the detachment behaviour of 314 μm diameter silica particles from a single 3 mm diameter bubble rotating in a confined cavity connected to a cross-flowing water channel was investigated. The liquid cross-flow generated a rotating flow inside the confined cavity, which was quantified using 2D particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The fluctuating (x-y) velocity components inside the cavity for each cross-flow velocity, U, were then used to estimate the corresponding time/volume average turbulence intensity values, Ti. Turbulence intensity ranged from 9.3-16.2%. In the absence of a bubble, the rotating vortex within the cavity created a pressure field which decreased towards the centre of the vortex; wherein the lowest pressure zone was located at the centre of the cavity. The vorticity into the cavity was found to increase with increasing the turbulence intensity. A bubble, both without and with particles attached, was introduced into the cavity under different flow conditions and its motion was tracked using the shadowgraphy technique. Experimentally, it was found that the bubble-particle aggregate was trapped at the centre of the cavity (low-pressure region) following a spiral trajectory. An interface resolved 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to predict the particle detachment conditions within the confined cavity. CFDpredicted vorticity in the absence of a bubble agreed well with experimental observation. The CFD analysis indicated that the vorticity inside the cavity was not significantly changed when a single bubble was introduced. On this basis, the computed vorticity was utilised in describing the force balance applied to the attached particle. Computationally, it was found that the critical turbulence intensity, beyond which the particle was detached from the bubble, was 14%. This value was consistent with the experimental observation of detachment at Ti at 15.7%, and above, but not at lower values. In the extraction of base metals from printed circuit boards (PCBs) using bioleaching, the accumulation of metal ion stress in solution has been shown to inhibit the microbial regeneration of ferric iron. This poses a challenge for the development of this technology for e-waste treatment. The paper explores the application of a microbial immobilisation system in a two-stage bioleaching system consisting of a chemical leaching reactor in series with a microbial ferric iron regenerating reactor to mitigate microbial inhibition and to enhance base metal extraction. A mixed microbial culture dominated by L. ferriphilum, L. ferrooxidans and At. Caldus was maintained over a period of two months in the presence of polyurethane foam which acted as the biomass support particle. Microbial metabolic activity of immobilised cells and their tolerance to inhibitory Cu ions was investigated. Results showed that immobilised microbial cells maintained higher ferrous iron oxidation activity compared to planktonic cells in the presence of increasing Cu2+ concentrations up to 6 g/L. This presents an opportunity for microbial immobilised systems to be adopted in two-stage bioleaching system. Since 1952, Bond’s equation has been used as a standard to predict the specific energy of grinding for a given duty. The Bond’s equation considers that the exponent is constant for all conditions. Hukki, in 1961, pointed out that the exponent is a function of the particle size, and concluded that the Bond’s equation applies successfully for an intermediate range of sizes; out of this range the Bond’s equation leads to high error as demonstrated in this paper. More recently, in 2004, S. Morrell presented a new formula in which the exponents vary with the feed and product size. This paper is based on Hukki’s approach and presents a new general formula, in which the exponent varies only with the feed particle size. This new equation has been proven in 82 observable cases in Peru and other countries around the world, involving ball mills and vertimills in different configurations over a wide range of feed and product sizes, work indices and mill diameters; in most cases, the predicted value has an error less than 10% with regards to the observed value and no need for any correction factor. A deposit to be mined by underground methods can be accessed by a number of methods: ? Adit ? Decline or ramp ? Inclined shaft ? Vertical shaft. Adits are an economical approach when the orebody is above the general floor elevation i.e. suitable in hilly or mountainous terrain. Incline shafts are limited to relatively shallow deposits, and because they are developed on an incline, development lengths for a given depth are the three to five times longer than for a vertical shaft. Vertical shafts are the preferred method for deposits deeper than 300 m but the development rate is slow and construction costs are very high. Declines or ramps offer early access to shallow deposits, which develops the ore body expediently, but are generally developed at a gradient of approximately 12 per cent. Decline haulages have become an attractive alternative to shaft hoisting, and over recent years the role of decline access has become more widespread throughout South Africa. Traditionally, South Africa has enjoyed the use of shaft systems, largely due to the large knowledge base of mining the Witwatersrand Basin, where vertical and inclined shafts were the norm. South Africa has also had the advantage of cheap electricity, giving shafts a definite economic advantage. However, in recent years the national power utility ESKOM has undergone an expansion programme that has led to tariff increases of nearly 100% over a three-year period. Based on the changes in electricity tariffs and technological improvements to underground haulage trucks, the economic inputs to access development have changed. This paper reviews mine access for shallow deposits as currently applied in South Africa. Based on current economic inputs, the paper investigates at what point a vertical shaft would be more economical than a decline system utilizing typical South African mining equipment.

In initial laboratory tests with a travelling submerged jet on artificially prepared clay it was found that the cavity depth is dependent on the stagnation pressure of the jet and the undrained shear strength of the clay. In addition, it has been observed that the increase in cavity depth with jet pressure is stronger at higher jet pressures. It is assumed that this can be explained by cavitation of the jet at higher jet pressures. At cavitation a cone of bubbles is formed around the jet, which reduces the exchange of momentum between the jet and the surrounding water. This results in a higher jet velocity and a higher stagnation pressure at a specified distance from the nozzle exit. In literature, no relation between the jet pressure of a free submerged cavitating jet and stagnation pressures was found. Additional tests were carried out to determine this relationship. Because practical dredging occurs at relatively large water depths, these tests were performed in a pressure vessel at different pressure levels. It is concluded that the efficiency of a jet (defined as the stagnation pressure at a certain distance divided by the jet pressure), for stand-off-distances smaller than 45 times the nozzle diameter, increases significantly by cavitation in comparison to the non-cavitating situation. However, the jet pressure required for a fully developed cavitation cone increases strongly with water depth. At dredging depths of 20 m and more, the necessary jet pressures are higher than normally applied in dredging practice. Thus in spite of the importance of cavitation in laboratory tests at atmospheric pressure, in normal dredging practice cavitation is of less importance.

India is devoid of coking coal resources, which is a vital raw material for coke making. As a result it has to import about 80% coking coal for steel making. Indian National Steel Policy, 2017 has envisaged crude steel production around 300 million tonnes Mt) by the year 2030-31 and forecasts coking coal demand of 161 Mtpa (million tonnes per annum). One way of improving the indigenous resources is to study the performance of existing washeries and to improve the clean coal recovery by adopting suitable technology. A study was carried out, mainly to focus on the fine coal circuit of an existing coking coal washery, to generate the desired quality of clean coal. The operating coking coal washery being studied is presently feeding coal from nine different sources with varying feed ash contents. The coal fines varied in ash content ranging from 19.5% - 43.6%. For treating the coal fines, the washery has operated a spiral for the past few years. Performance studies were carried out, and it was found that the spiral is not efficient in recovering the cleans. Detailed investigations were carried out on the coal fines using flotation techniques, and it was found that to achieve a low ash clean coal, the froth flotation is a much better beneficiation option than a spiral, The studies showed that the recovery of clean coal through a spiral is 67.7% at ash content of 27.0%, while flotation tests showed a recovery of 68.1% at 16.5% ash content.
