The current application of copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) separation inhibitors is often associated with large dosage, high toxicity, environmental pollution problems. In order to solve these problems, a light sensitive Cu-Mo separation inhibitor LS（light sensitive inhibitor，abbreviated to LS） was developed. In this paper, inhibitory performance, photodegradation rule, and acting mechanism of LS were studied. The subsequent test results showed that, compared with traditional inhibitors, LS has shown comparative advantages, with lower dosage and good inhibiting effect. A series of flotation tests with LS as inhibitor were conducted on a Cu-Mo concentrate. A locked-cycle test showed that a molybdenum concentrate containing Mo 49.88% and Cu 0.6%, with 93.23% molybdenum recovery and a copper concentrate containing Cu 29.92%, with 99.99% copper recovery can be obtained. The photodegradation performance of the reagent was investigated under 365 nm, 254 nm and sunlight irradiation. The degradation of the reagents could be completely achieved by irradiation of three wavelengths of light. However, with the different wavelength of irradiation light, the degradation rate is different, the time required to reach 50% degradation rate being 3 h (254nm), 4 h (solar light) and 6 h (365nm) respectively. The inhibition mechanism on chalcopyrite was studied. FTIR study showed that LS could be adsorbed on the surface of chalcopyrite by chemical adsorption, which could enhance the hydrophilicity of chalcopyrite. Ultraviolet adsorption tests indicated that the adsorption capacity of LS on chalcopyrite surface was greatly affected by pulp pH value, and the proper pH value was 5-9. High pressure grinding technology has gained further interest in various industries. So far in the mining industry, machines are in operation in diamond mines and iron ore applications. In gold and copper ore processing, test work has been conducted showing considerable operational and process benefits. Similar benefits can be expected from HPGR applications in the platinum industry due to the preferred ore breakage along grain boundaries, thus liberating the PGE particles. This paper will provide an update on the state of high pressure grinding roll technology. Developments in the design of high pressure grinding rolls, for minimized maintenance requirements and availability just as high as conventional mills, will be presented. Plant flow sheets and concepts will be discussed, which allow for a reduction of capital and operating cost in comparison to existing two-stage milling circuits.

"A method of optimizing the design of a processing plant has been developed which minimizes capital and operating costs for average stripping ratios and ore characteristics. Models were developed to describe the operating characteristics and costs involved in various operations such as up-grading, leaching and solid-liquid separation.The options available in up-grading policy and the relation between the cut-off grade and the costs incurred subsequently in the treatment of the ore formed the basis of the optimization. To arrive at an optimum plant configuration and a set of operating parameters, the interrelation between grinding size, leaching temperature, leaching time, and various plant recycle options was investigated."

"The most commonly used high-chromium white cast iron (HCWCI) is the hypoeutectic white cast iron that contains 2–3.5 wt.% C and 10–30% Cr. This type of material relies on hard, brittle M7C3 carbides to impart good wear resistance. Due to its good wear resistance, this material has found application in the mining industry and cement industry. However, it has low fracture strength and this challenge led to research aimed at refining the microstructure. This was done by the addition of niobium in the range between 0.1 and 0.6 wt.%. In the as-cast condition, the addition of niobium was found to increase the fracture strength due to the finer eutectic microstructure. The hardness was also found to have increased slightly compared to the reference alloy with no niobium additions. Low fracture strength after heat treatment was observed in the Nb-added HCWCI, which is believed to have been caused by the precipitation of secondary carbides and the transformation of the matrix from austenite to martensitic. IntroductionFor the past few years Mintek has been involved in a project in which a number of alloys have been identified for grinding media applications. The high-chromium white cast iron (HCWCI) alloys were among the alloys researched for this application. The knowledge acquired from the grinding ball media research has now been extended to mill liners, which have traditionally been made of manganese-, chromium- and chrome-molybdenum steels. The replacement of worn mill liners costs the mining industry a significant amount of money and this has led to a need for continuous research to prolong the life of the liners. During milling operations, liner wear has an adverse effect on the capacity of the mill, the energy efficiency and milling efficiency and finally leads to relining, to replace worn liners."

Foamed cement packs offer a viable alternative to conventional timber or other forms of packs for permanent underground support. These packs comprise steel mesh and hoop containment with an outer bag for the grout; woven, laminated polypropylene fabric being ideal for the purpose. The grout is supplied in 25kg bags and fed into a purpose ? designed foam placer machine which delivers the foamed grout directly to the packs from 60 metre long delivery hose. Foamed cement grout as a fill material offers attractive properties for support packs, in summary these are: Variable Grout Strength Grout strength is controlled by the grout density being delivered from the placer machine. This can be changed by the machine settings. Strength Development Fast rate of strength development is possible so that support is available quickly. Pack yield The foamed grouts are compressible so that yielding of the grout pack can be achieved without loss of support. Rate of Filling Three sizes of placer machine are available, these use one, two, or three 25kg bags per minute of grout, pack filling time is therefore a matter of minutes, a typical 0.75m diameter pack x 1.2m high taking some 17 minutes to fill. Tests in a 1000 tonne press have confirmed that the above characteristics can be achieved with foamed cement packs at acceptable cost. This will be illustrated in the paper with experience to date.

W. R. Lawrie (Member): As all the Institute members present are aware, the Ninth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress was held in Great Britain from 3rd to 24th May, 1969. The Congress opened in London and the first week was devoted to technical sessions. Several receptions and other forms of entertainment were held in the evenings. The Congress was attended by some 1 200 delegates, many of whom were accompanied by their wives. As can be imagined a large organisation was needed to cater for all the whims of these delegates, to arrange accommodation and to provide transport for the technical trips, for the receptions and for the sight-seeing tours. Papers presented at the technical sessions proved of great interest. It was stimulating to hear of the developments taking place in the various branches of mining and metallurgy. The discussions which developed between men from so many different countries were thought provoking, led to new friendships and most of us made valuable contacts for the future. There were 141 papers presented in the one week. They were given in four separate halls with two, three and sometimes four papers coming up for discussion in each of the three sessions per day in each hall. Among the more interesting subjects were those concerning off-shore drilling and the facilities for production of petroleum and natural gas. Beach mining at Consolidated Diamond Mines drew a large audience. Automation, mechanization and other technical developments were well described and we were brought up to date with modern techniques of mineral prospecting. There was general discussion on the future of the mineral industries together with comments on the consumption and price trends of these metals and minerals. The future of uranium, of vital interest to us in South Africa, came in for much debate. During the first week, besides attending the technical sessions and seeing some of the sights of London, we were royally entertained. There was a banquet, attended by some I 400 people, where we were welcomed by Princess Alexandra, a reception by H.M. Government in the Banqueting House, and we were entertained at the House of Lords on a terrace overlooking the bustling and rather muddy river Thames. Then there was the visit to the Glyndebourne Opera. It is only in London that at 3 o'clock of an afternoon, nearly 1 000 people all togged up in dress suits and long dresses and carrying packets of sandwiches for supper could arrive at a station to catch a train, and not even cause a stir of interest or a raised eyebrow! This is the way we travelled 60 miles to the opera from London. Surely there can be no more picturesque or romantic a setting for an opera than this large 400-year old red brick manor house nestling in the green valleys of the unspoilt Sussex countryside. It was a glorious evening and though we returned somewhat late and tired, not one of us would have missed this experience. After the first week in London there was a choice of tours of one week to London and the Home Counties, Cornwall, a Geological tour to Scotland, South Wales, and North England. These were followed by further one week tours to Yorkshire and Lancashire, Scotland, West Country and Midlands, a Geological tour of Wales, and a Mining and Geological tour to Jurassic Iron Mines. We then returned to London for the final session and closing banquet. Post-congress tours were arranged to Europe and to Ireland. It was a wonderful Congress, a great experience, we made many friends and may there be many more congresses! . L. W. P. van den Bosch (Member): Much has already been said in appreciation of the excellent organisation and arrangements made for the delegates who attended this Congress. This report is confined to a brief discussion of the personal impressions gained from the papers presented and the technical visits attended. The papers covered a wide variety of subjects ranging from highly theoretical observations to practical descriptions of operations. There were three main themes, VIZ: 1. The attention given to research and its forceful application to practical operation. 2. A steady development in mechanization and automation leading to savings in manpower. 3. Improvization, modernization and adaptation of exisitng facilities. Thoughts on these themes can best be illustrated by comments on some of the industries visited. COAL The National Coal Board (N.C.B.) has been most progressive and all of us have heard of the Bevercotes Colliery with its completely automatic mining and coal handling equipment. This was not, unfortunately, on show but there is no doubt that this is one of the greatest advances in coal mining leading towards continuous production. Coal in Britain is fighting for its life against oil, North Sea gas, imported gases and nuclear power. Output is dropping, the less efficient collieries are closing down and efficiencies are steadily rising as the following tabulation indicates: In 1931: 1 million men produced 300 million tons of coal In 1947: 0.7 million men produced 230 million tons of coal In 1968: 0.4 million men produced 160 million tons of coal

Oil, coal, and gas account for approximately 80% of global primary energy, but only a portion of total airborne CO2 eq (approx. 35% at GWP20 to 65% at GWP100), even though they account for 95% of total measured CO2 emissions. The benefits of these energy sources, as well as their related costs, are not all incorporated in current energy policy discussions. Global greenhouse gas policies must include documented changes in measured airborne CO2 eq to avoid spending large amounts of public funds on ineffective or sub-optimal policies. The authors examined airborne CO2, which is less than half of emitted CO2, as well as reported CH4 emissions and the global warming potential of CH4 as published by the IPCC for coal and natural gas. The surprising conclusion is that surfaced-mined coal appears ‘better for the climate’ than the average natural gas, and all coal appears beneficial over LNG. Therefore, current CO2-only reduction policies and CO2 taxes are leading to unintended consequences and the switch from coal to natural gas, especially LNG, will not have the desired impact of reducing predicted future global warming; in fact, quite the contrary. A large portion of anthropogenic global warming is attributed by the IPCC and IEA to CH4, but it must be noted that CH4 emissions from natural sources and from agriculture account for approximately 40% and 25% of annual global CH4 emissions respectively. Energy accounts for about 20% of documented CH4 emissions. CO2 contributes only approximately 35% of annual airborne anthropogenic GHG emissions after accounting for CH4, over a 20-year horizon. At a 100-year horizon, the contribution of CO2 increases to approximately 60%. Energy policies that do not consider all GHG emissions along the entire value chain will lead to undesired economic and environmental distortions. All carbon taxation and CO2 pricing schemes are incorrect and need to be revised. At IPCC’s GWP20 an approximately 2%1 higher loss of CH4 across the value chain prior to combustion of natural gas versus coal will lead to ‘climate parity’ of coal with natural gas. According to public data, natural gas value chains have high CH4 and undocumented CO2 losses. On a global average, using only IEA-documented CH4 data, natural gas emits approximately 15% more CO2 eq than surface-mined coal, over a 20-year horizon. This difference will increase as the use of shale gas and LNG expands. Investors should support all energy systems in a manner that avoids an energy crisis, including intermittent renewable energy systems where they make sense. If CO2 emissions need to be reduced, one of the most effective ways would be to install ultra-supercritical power plants with CCUS technology. However, the undisputed benefits of increased CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere because of its promotion of photosynthesis and plant growth effects (fertilization) need to be considered in energy policy decisions as well. The authors suggest that future research and development should concentrate on reducing net emissions from fossil fuel power plants and providing cost-effective and reliable new conventional power generation capacity, utilizing clean coal and clean natural gas technology.

The coordination compound tetrakis(1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanediona to)zirconium(IV), [Zr(DBM)4], (DBM = dibenzoyl methane/1,3- diphenyl-1,3-propanedionol) was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [Zr(DBM)4] crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c (a = 24.769(4) Å, b = 10.216(5) Å, c = 19.314(4) Å, and = 101.541(5)°). The coordination geometry around the zirconium atom, formed by the eight O-donating atoms of the four -diketonates, is found to be a near-perfect square antiprism. Crystal packing is stabilized by C?H... interactions throughout the crystal lattice. This structure is a noteworthy example of the application of ambient condition synthesis of zirconium compounds in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) as reaction and crystallization solvent, highlighting the possibilities of aerobic condition metal purification through chelation.

"Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. The implementation of these solutions will ensure that the PGM industry thrives and reaches its potential of growing production to more than 322 t by 2020 (Baxter, 2016)."

"The creation of mine excavations alters the stress distribution in the surrounding rock mass. In modern mining, resin-grouted rockbolts are used as a means of support in order to redistribute stresses and reestablish equilibrium in the rock mass. The success of resin-grouted rockbolting depends on the design of the system and the correct installation of the support units.The support design and rockbolt installation procedure at a platinum mine in the Bushveld Complex were investigated. A number of issues that resulted in poor installation were identified, including resin admixture, incorrect length and orientation of support holes, over- or under-spinning of the resin, and incorrect rockbolt tensioning. The support design used at the mine was reviewed and its limitations identified. A number of recommendations were made for optimizing the support design by reducing the diameter of the drill bit and reducing the length of the support holes. These changes will enable the mine to use different combinations of resin capsules. Implementation of the proposed changes will lead to a significant reduction in the cost of installation per support hole, as well as improve productivity and safety.IntroductionThe creation of any mine excavation disturbs the virgin state of stress in the Earth’s crust. This results in stress concentrations that interfere with the stability of the rock mass surrounding the excavation. It is essential to modify the internal behaviour of the rock mass surrounding excavations in order to reinforce the ground and stabilize excavations. Resin-grouted rockbolts are extensively used for this purpose. Esterhuizen (2014) stated that when effectively installed, the rockbolt exerts a clamping force and a bonding strength that keeps the rock mass together. This increases the cohesive strength of all discontinuities in the rock mass and enhances the stability of the excavation. Poorly designed and installed ground support is ineffective and constitutes a safety hazard. It is therefore crucial for every mine to ensure that any form of ground support is designed and installed correctly. This research evaluates the installation of resign-grouted rockbolts and identifies challenges and solutions for improved safety as observed at an operating hard rock mine. The support design used at the mine was reviewed and the design parameters optimized. The outcomes will enhance the efficiency of support and minimize the costs associated with the installation of resingrouted rockbolts."

The Hydraulic Institute has completed the task of developing a new ANSI/HI standard 12.1-12.6 (2005) for rotodynamic (centrifugal) slurry pumps covering nomenclature, definitions, applications, and operation. The standard provides examples of the different slurry pump types and contains an extensive section on pump and slurry definitions. The effect of slurry on pump performance is covered along with the pumping of froth. Reference is also made to ANSI/HI standard 9.6.7 (2004), which contains a new method for pump performance correction when handling viscous fluids. Classification of slurry services is established and then is used to determine limitations on velocities and total head per pump in order to obtain acceptable wear performance. The new service class, head per stage and other limits are directly related to capital and other cost considerations that will affect solids transport system economics. The writers review the contents of the new standard, highlight the main points, and discuss the reason for the slurry classification, corresponding limits and expected implications, particularly with respect to operating costs of the pumps in solids transport systems.

Stationary mine air control equipment enables monitoring of CH4 concentration only in sensor locations. CMC-4 individual indicator built into a caplight has been developed in Ukraine, extending CH4 monitoring to manned job sites. Major technical characteristics of the indicator are demonstrated. It features two operation thresholds: 1st threshold 1.0 to 2.0% vol. 2nd threshold 1.5 to 2.5% vol. Basic absolute accuracy ± 0.2% Caplight battery is a common power supply for the lamp and CH4 indicator, providing at least 10 hours of the system non-stop operation. Average pre-failure life is at least 10,000 hrs. It features: an explosion proof design and intrinsically safe test circuit; a small-sized sensor as an integral part of the caplight; a hybrid microcircuit to facilitate functioning of methane monitoring unit. The CMC-4 indicator weight is the weight of the caplight itself and equals 2.4 kg. A two-threshold design makes possible to distinguish between methane sources: slow accumulation due to diffusion or sudden rushes due to a gas-dynamic event. The utilization of computer assisted tomography (CT or CAT-scan)as general non-destructive examination (NDE) technique and as research tool for scientists in South Africa, is limited due to the relative unavailability or nonexistence of such specialized analytical equipment. Many medical hospitals are equipped with X-ray CT scanners for the diagnostic examination of patients but do not easily allow paleontologist or other scientist to utilize their very expensive equipment. As from 2003, Necsa hosts the South African Neutron Radiography (SANRAD) and tomography facility where neutrons from the SAFARI-1 nuclear research reactor and their penetrating power as well as X-rays as a complementing tool, are utilized in many R&D applications. This facility is being made available to HEI and specifically utilized by postgraduate students as part of their studies and/or by industry on an ad hoc commercial basis. The capability of these radiation imaging facilities at Necsa will be demonstrated in areas such as paleontology, geosciences and specifically the physical properties of rock and the distribution of minerals in borehole cores, petrophysics to predict the percentage tar/oil/water content within sandstone samples and others. The penetration capability of neutrons through specimens with a matrix of high atomic number (dense materials) and their ability to be attenuated by low atomic number material (light density) makes neutron imaging complementary to X-ray imaging. The capability of X-ray and gamma radiation for relatively easy penetration through specimens of low atomic number allows for viewing of imbedded high atomic number materials and density variation. X-ray micro focus radiography is capable of resolving objects of micro scale size that are micro distances apart whereas X-ray phase contrast radiography utilizes the wave properties of the electromagnetic spectrum of X-rays to clearly define edges of the specimen under investigation. Many applications with neutrons as imaging probe are successfully applied at several facilities across the globe such as at NIST in USA, Neutra at PSI in Switzerland, and ANTARES at FRM2 in Germany, etc, are documented 4?9, through world conferences on neutron radiography, for example. This is achieved through very well thought through and implemented instrumentation from the production of neutrons to their detection and interpretation of the images. The need arose at Necsa to upgrade the current facility from 42-year-old technology, which was successfully applied in neutron imaging over the past 10 years, to state-of-the-art technology found at European facilities. This initiative started under the auspices of an IAEA-TC programme for the period 2007?2010.

Bateman Engineering managed the establishment of a second diamond treatment plant at the Letseng Mine in the Mokhotlong District of northern Lesotho, about 100 km from the town of Buthe Buthe. Letseng Diamonds Proprietary Limited, is owned 70 % by Gem Diamonds and 30 % by the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho. The second plant, which commenced construction in late 2006, doubled Letseng Mines' hard rock processing capacity from 2.6 million t/yr to 5.2 million t/yr, making it the worlds' seventh largest diamond mine by throughput. Bateman Engineering provided the engineering design, procurement and construction management of the new plant.
