ABSTRACT: The technique of various kinds of numerical analysis offered remarkable results to explication of many rock mechanical phenomena. These techniques regarded a rock stratum as a continuum body and solved the governing equation of continuum mechanics by using finite differ-ence method, finite element method and/or others. Using numerical analysis based on continuum mechanics, however, the simulations of destruction phenomena caused by elastic waves and on the other hand, the elastic wave propagation which generated by fracturing events are quite difficult. In this paper, we express a rock stratum by a granular body model and develop a simulation tech-nique can simulate both wave phenomena and destruction phenomena at once. The DEM (discrete element method) simulation results are compared with finite difference solutions of elastic wave equation. Furthermore, we simulate Hopkinson effect by this proposed method. Hopkinson effect is famous as a destruction phenomenon caused by elastic wave propagation. ABRISS: In dieser Studie drücken wird eine Felsschicht durch ein Granularkörpermodell aus und entwickeln eine Simulationstechnik, die sowohl Wellenphänomene als auch Zerstörungsphänomene simulieren kann. Die Ergebnisse der Simulation mit DEM (Diskrete-Elemente-Methode) werden mit denen der Finit-Differenz-Lösung von Gleichungen elastischer Wellen verglichen. Desweiteren simulierten wir den Hopkinson-Effekt mit dieser vorgeschlagenen Methode. Der Hopkinson-Effekt ist als Zerstörungsphänomen berühmt, verursacht durch Fortpflanzung elastischer Wellen. RESUME: Dans cette étude, nous exprimons un lit de roches par un modèle à corps granulaire et développons une technique, permettant de simuler d'un coup le phénomène des ondes et le phé-nomène de destruction. Les résultats de la simulation DEM (méthode d'éléments discrets) sont comparés aux solutions à différence finie de l'équation d'ondes élastiques. En outre, nous simulons l'effet d'Hopkinson par la méthode proposée. L'effet d'Hopkinson est connu comme phénomène de destruction, causé par la propagation d'ondes élastiques.

The latest Draft MPRRB was released for public comment in October 2006. The main purpose of the Bill is to collect royalties at mines developed in terms of new-order mineral rights granted through the MPRDA process. The transition phase stipulated in the MPRDA will be completed by 1 May 2009, on which date mineral royalties will become payable to the state. The royalty rates stated in the MPRRB differ from mineral to mineral and also depend on the degree of refinement. Gold is the subject of this paper, where the royalty rate ranges from 1.5% (for refined gold) to 3% (for unrefined gold) of sales revenue. This royalty is payable regardless of profit, with a maximum 75% relief for loss-making mines. The purpose of this paper is to establish whether or not it would be necessary for gold mines to adjust their mineral reserve statements as a result of this Bill. The methodology is to add the royalty costs stipulated in the MPRRB to the actual quarterly information for the past ten years as reported by the gold-mine members of the COM. The rationale is to investigate the impact this Bill (in its current form) would have had on gold reserves that must be left unmined in the ground because of a higher pay limit. The results of the study point to a significant impact on reserves available for mining with the subsequent shortening of mine lives and retrenchment of workers. Had the MPRRB been effective for the 10 years prior to 1996, it would have resulted in 46 tonnes of gold being sterilised. Stated alternatively, 30 700 workers at COM gold mines alone would have lost their livelihoods.

The purpose of the project was to optimize load haul dump (LHD) machinery use as they were spending too much time doing what they should not be doing. During the investigation, the author found that the machine's actual availability was 86% and the utilization ranged between 30% and 42%. This shows that the availability of the machine has met its target. Therefore the main problem was with the LHD utilization and that is what the project focuses on. To satisfy the objectives, the author firstly studied the existing mining data like the key performance indicators (KPIs) in order to analyse the machine's availability and utilization; this is what gave direction to the problem. Secondly the author did a literature review on mines with similar problems. This gave the author ideas on what to look at in approaching such a situation. Thirdly, the author gathered information on what the LHDs are doing on a daily basis by doing a time study. This gave the author an idea of how long it took the LHDs to complete a specific task. The author also interviewed operators and their supervisors in order to find the best practice work. This helped in identifying the problem areas when comparing the best practice work with what the LHDs are actually doing. According to the project results, it was found that the LHDs are underutilized due to shortage of drivers and the long distances the LHDs have to travel for material loading and refuelling. The author recommended that the machine utilization should be improved by training more operators in order to eliminate the 'no operator' downtime; the cost arrangement of this recommendation is included in the report. The author also recommended that the travelling time should be reduced by using tractors instead of LHDs when long distances need to be travelled for material loading. Another recommendation for reducing travelling time was to bring the mobile fuel tank closer to a section; the cost arrangement for this recommendation is also included in the report. "This article presents laboratory test work conducted on an African haematite ore to determine the influence of the flotation pulp pH on the final iron grade and recovery. Results show that a combination of an isodecyl ether propylene amine/amino acetate and 1,3-propanediamine, N-(3-(C10-C16-alkyloxy)propyl)-derivatives collector is suitable for separating haematite from quartz. Higher iron grades were obtained at pH levels between neutral and pH 9. This underlines the importance of the surface charge effect of the ore on its flotation characteristics. The results serve as good baseline conditions for further optimization. IntroductionBeneficiation of iron ore by flotation is widely used in Brazil, India and China. In Africa, however, this practice is not yet commercially developed.The aim of this test work is to serve as a starting point by establishing suitable pH conditions for the development of a practically implementable reagent suite, which will then be included in a larger beneficiation circuit for producing high-grade iron ore sinter feed.In the literature, African iron ore types are graded as low-grade (60.0–62.9% Fe; 8.6– 12.5% SiO2 and insolubles), high-grade (66.0– 69.9% Fe; 0.8–4.5% SiO2 and insolubles), and meduim-grade as the remaining portion (Astrup et al., 1998). The low-grade ore used in this work contains less than 60% Fe.For Brazilian ores consisting of a combination of haematite and quartz, it is common to use corn starch as a depressant and ether amine blends as collectors with additional frothing characteristic (Araujo et al., 2005). Work by Turrer and Peres (2010) shows the possibility of using other depressants successfully as well.The main mechanism of the reverse flotation of quartz from iron ore is based on the electrostatic theory of flotation. This is due to the strong pH dependence of the zeta potential of the mineral edge planes on silicate particles (Fuerstenau and Pradip. 2005)."

Biooxidation, a biohydrometallurgical process, utilizes a mixed microbial consortium to mediate the dissolution of refractory gold-bearing ores to enhance gold recovery during cyanidation. Recognition of water as a critical resource has prompted improved water management strategies within mining and minerals processing. Bioremediated wastewater from the cyanidation tailings provides a potential water source to supplement the water required for the biooxidation circuit, reducing freshwater extraction. Gold biomining operations have typically been reluctant to recycle this wastewater due to the potential inhibitory effects of cyanide and thiocyanate (SCN-) on the microbial population. Historical process upsets suggest that the microorganisms are sensitive to SCN- concentrations as low as 1 mg/L. However, effective bioremediation processes resulting in effluents with low or negligible SCN- concentrations may allow gold biomining plants the opportunity to recycle available water. Microbial activity as well as alteration in community structure were monitored as a function of increasing SCN- concentration over the range of 0 mg/L to 5 mg/L to investigate the response of the biooxidation community to potential SCN- spikes resulting from upsets in the remediation process. Appropriate microbial growth and ferrous iron oxidation activity with a nominal shift in community structure were observed at SCN- concentrations up to 1 mg/L. Thiocyanate concentrations above 1 mg/L resulted in the complete inhibition of ferrous iron oxidation activity. This was attributed to Leptospirillum ferriphilum’s sensitivity to SCN-. Exposure to a SCN- concentration of 5 mg/L resulted in a lower cell concentration and a significant increase in growth lag time, and the absence of L. ferriphilum from the microbial population. At. caldus and Ap. cupricumulans were still present at 5 mg/L SCN-, although Ap. cupricumulans was unable to oxidise ferrous iron at this SCN- concentration. It was concluded that recycling bioremediated cyanidation tailings wastewater within the biooxidation circuit is feasible; however, to retain process performance, SCN- concentrations should not exceed 1 mg/L. Since 2012, Ghana has been implementing local procurement regulations in the mining sector to broaden and deepen linkages between mining and other sectors of the economy. The regulations have been implemented in collaboration with the mining industry. This paper offers an in-depth analysis of how the local procurement regulations and related initiatives have been implemented so far. Primary data gathered with semi-structured interviews and secondary sources of data indicate a steady improvement in both in-country procurement and local manufacturing of inputs for the mining industry. There are, however, some challenges relating to tariff structure and support (financial and technical) for local suppliers and manufacturers to meet high standards and demands of the mining industry. This calls for a well-thought-out strategy and programme of activities to sustain and improve on progress made.

Generally, monitoring of refractory furnace linings is of interest to the metallurgical industry. The main issues are to control wear of the furnace lining and break out of molten metal. Penetration of molten metal through the lining can cause considerable damage to equipment in the vicinity of the furnace and endanger operators. Rebuilding of a furnace lining is expensive, mainly because it stops production, but also because the lining materials are expensive. Here, two methods for monitoring the lining of a smelting furnace are presented. The methods are based on monitoring of the temperature distribution in the lining, more specific monitoring an isotherm in the lining. One method is based on the assumption of unidirectional heat flow locally, reducing the problem to a set of one-dimensional heat conduction problems. The other method is based on inverse heat conduction. In this context inverse heat conduction means estimating the wear from temperature measurements using mathematical optimization techniques. The study is based on the ilmenite smelting furnace at Tinfos Titan & Iron KS. Some results from real temperature measurements and real observations from the ilmenite smelting furnaces is presented.

In an underground mine the ingress of heat can generally be attributed to two sources (Rock exposure and artificial mechanisms). The heat load relating rock exposure is subdivided into stoping [~40%] and haulages [~20%]. Rock is exposed to the ambient air and as a mine increases in depth the VRT (Virgin Rock Temperature) increases which leads to more heat ingress underground. To counter the heat ingress, especially in low-seam stoping areas of a deep level mine, air is, a) cooled artificially, b) the amount of rock exposed is reduced in the back areas of a stope by backfill applications, and c) ventilation air is used more efficiently. The heat reduction within a stope due to placed backfill could amount to ~50% for operations mining at a mean rock breaking depth of about 4500 mbc (metres below collar). Unfortunately, due to backfill transport methods, the physical fluid properties and application methods adopted, additional heat is induced into the air. The heat ingress due to backfill application could amount to as much as 25% of the overall in-stope heat load. This heat influx, seen as a negative aspect of backfill operations, is nevertheless overshadowed by the overall in-mine heat load reduction capability of about 20% attainable. The in-stope benefit [~50%] attainable from backfill operations could be increased with the incorporation of a heat exchange (cooling) methodology to offset the additional heat ingress into the surrounding air of a deep underground mine.

The thermal state in submerged-arc furnaces (S.A.F.) producing ferro alloys is important for the conditions of both the grade of alloy produced as well as specific energy consumption. The temperature profile in the S.A.F. is affected by the endothermic chemical reactions and the rate of gas evolution. The gas evolution commences at about 900 C due to the reduction of iron in the ore. A first-principle-based 2-D model has been developed to predict the temperature profile in the furnace. In this study, four ores of different grades have been considered in order to simulate the thermal profile in the S.A.F. The influence of the composition of the ore on the thermal profile and its significance in rationalisation of charge distribution to optimise the process are discussed.

A number of base-metal operations would like to increase production to take advantage of the higher metals prices. In general, this higher production should not be achieved with major operating changes. In hydrometallurgical facilities, leaching and pressure leaching represents one area where upfront limitations may be a bottleneck to the capacity of the entire plant. An assessment of the capacity of the leaching tanks and autoclaves was performed using a predictive model within the AweSym flowsheet simulator. The model is described, and the results of the application of the model to a number of different leaching reactors are presented. It is argued that the leaching number, which relates the residence time, particle size and the leaching rate, is of prime importance. Finally it is shown that there are some unexpected catastrophic events in increasing production capacity without a thorough understanding of the leaching operation.

Outotec?s direct leaching process is an atmospheric leaching process for sulphidic zinc concentrates. The direct leaching process, based on special leaching reactors developed by Outokumpu, is the most economical way to produce electrolytic zinc. The production scale applications of the process realized so far are in use at Boliden?s Kokkola and Odda zinc plants. A new full-scale application of Outotec?s direct leaching process will be started in 2008 in China. The process is integrated to the existing production plant, replacing part of the old production facilities by modern technology. Besides high zinc extraction the plant expansion and modernization offers also indium recovery, iron precipitation and solution purification processes. The process equipment includes tailor-made reactors designed on the basis of the work and experience of Outotec research center. The potential application of fluidized beds in several sectors of the ferroalloy industry is promising. They can be used in the direct reduction of iron ores to produce a feed for steelmaking, in the reduction of manganese dioxide to produce a lesser oxide for feeding to smelters, in the preheating of chromite for the production of ferrochrome, and in the calcining and pre-reduction of nickel laterites for the production of ferronickel. This paper discusses the potential of fluidized beds in theses processes and highlights the advantages of the technology over other technologies, such as rotary kilns. Two primary advantages?(1) that fluidized beds can treat fine materials and (2) that fluidized beds can be integrated with smelters in a way that allows for more efficient use of energy?may well see the technology gain prominence as more deposits of lower grade are mined and industries strive to use their resources more efficiently. In discussing the potential of the technology in the ferroalloy industry, this paper focuses on the application of fluidized beds in the smelting of chromite, nickel laterites, and manganese ores. Central to the successful operation of this technology is a knowledge of how particle properties influence the behaviour and design of fluidized beds.

The soil was decomposed shale and diabase from the Witwatersrand Supergroup. The location was in the car park of The Wilds (a public park) in Johannesburg. The method proved very simple and required less complex plant and equipment than normal when excavating the shallow soil sections in shafts. It involves driving steel sheets ahead of the shaft sump into the soils and then excavating inside the ?tub? created by the sheets whilst supporting the sheets above with regularly spaced circular Steel Rings. It is the intent of this paper to discuss the method and design approach to the method. This will be done at the hand of experiences at E2 shaft..

Colin Maynard Spence was born in November 1921, and was educated at the Durban Preparatory and High Schools, in both of which he was a Dux Scholar. He graduated from the University of Natal in 1942 with a B.Sc. degree in civil engineering. In 1958 he received a Diploma in Town Planning from the same university. Jackleg rock drills expose their operators to high hand-arm vibration levels. To address this problem, an antivibration handle has been developed. The antivibration properties of the handle were achieved through a suspension based on a hinge design, achieved with a torsion spring and o-rings. To provide some bench marking for this new handle and to follow the evolution of its performance over time, a test bench was developed to characterize the vibration emission values of jackleg drills under controlled operating conditions. Testing of four antivibration handles on the test bench have shown reductions of the overall weighted acceleration level in the order of 54 % to 60 %, with most of the attenuation occurring in the zh-axis at the rock drill percussion frequency.

The stability of slopes is a crucial problem not only in open pit mines, but also in civil engineering situations. The deformational behaviour of slopes is in general monitored during/after the excavation by carrying out field measurements where displacement measurements are commonly adopted. In monitoring the slope stability it should be emphasized that the measurement results must be properly interpreted so as to assess whether the slopes are stable or become unstable in the future. In order to interpret the data, back analysis is extremely useful. In this paper a slope stability monitoring system is described. It consists of displacement measurements by GPS, and a back analysis of measured data. The use of GPS has a great advantage, because of the fact that continuous displacement measurements with high accuracy for a large extent of concerned area can be easily achieved. On the other hand, the back analysis can reveal the mechanical characteristics of the ground, which make it possible to assess the stability of slopes quantitatively.

Platinum mines in the Bushveld Complex are located in areas with a high geothermal gradient. This means that, compared to, for example, gold mines of the Witwatersrand region, high rock temperatures are encountered at relatively shallower depths. Thus air cooling and refrigeration need to be considered at early stages in mine development. Another factor that influences air cooling and ventilation requirements is the use of trackless diesel equipment for loading and hauling broken rock. At shallower depths it will be more cost-effective to locate the cooling and ventilation equipment on surface, whereas for deeper mines the more cost-effective option is to locate cooling equipment underground. For intermediate depths, trade-off studies need to be undertaken to determine the optimum mix between more cooling and less air or more air and less cooling, as well as the optimum location for this cooling equipment. Factors that are taken into account include power requirements, positional efficiency, and additional infrastructure requirements. Traditionally the approach has been to ventilate ?all of the mine all of the time?. However, with increasing power costs and growing pressure to ensure sustainability, this strategy must be modified to apply ventilation and cooling on demand. In other words, both cooling and ventilation equipment should be operated only when needed and should be adjusted to the demand at the time. Obviously there will be areas that will need to be ventilated (and cooled) continuously (for example, for dilution of flammable gases), but this can be built in to the overall strategy. In addition, in devising ventilation on demand (VoD) strategies, occupational criteria relating to exposure to gases, noise, and heat need to be taken into account. This paper discusses options available for implementing energy-efficient ventilation and cooling systems and suggests ways of changing traditional thinking in the overall ventilation and cooling of mines. Efficient ventilation and cooling designs can play a major role in improving sustainability and reducing energy costs and carbon footprint.

This paper summarises a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialled at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.
