In 2007, a total of 4,639 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Stone mines comprised 31.2% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,051; 44.2%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=373; 8.0%), followed by Texas (n=352; 7.6%).

Flotation studies of phosphate-bearing waste pond materials, low-grade washer products, and raw ores, all from the Tennessee brown phosphate district, showed that these types of materials could be treated without des liming to recover high-grade phosphate concentrates. The investigation showed that fine grinding before flotation was a requisite for increased recovery of the phosphate values and that the optimum pH conditions were in the range of 10.0 to 10.5 when using anionic collectors. Multiple-cleaning of the rougher phosphate concentrate was required to produce high-grade concentrates. Phosphate recoveries ranged from 60 to 82 percent and were inversely related to the grade of concentrate produced.

Because of the extreme interest in materials with high melting temperatures and the advantages offered over the powder route for making high-density material, arc-melting and centrifugal-casting methods were investigated for preparing shapes of hafnium carbide with and without excess carbon. Highly satisfactory equipment was constructed and efficient operating procedures were established. Also, methods for preparing consumable electrodes and shrink-tolerant graphite molds were developed. Although crack-free hafnium carbide (6.3 weight-percent carbon) shapes were not made, coherent castings containing 9 to 13.5 weight-percent carbon were produced; the same compositions were shown to be resistant to thermal shock. Selected physical and chemical tests were performed on castings chosen for investigation by chemical and nondestructive inspection techniques. Electrical conductivity and thermal expansion measurements were made. Measurable oxidation of all the compositions studied was observed to start between 500° and 600° C. Attack by nitrogen, however, did not occur until temperatures exceeded 2,000° C. A linear relationship of the logarithm of the diamond pyramid hardness to the temperature was noted. Considerable scatter of the bend-rupture strengths at room temperature and of the tensile strengths up to 2,000° C was found. However, at the latter temperature and above, a definite relationship of strength to temperature was observed and some ductility was noted.

Material and energy balances for stockpiled lignite were calculated by computer simulation techniques to determine the occurrence of spontaneous heating. Data on properties of lignite which affect spontaneous heating were required. In some cases, best values from reported data were utilized; in other cases, new data were developed. These include specific studies on the rate and conditions that influence oxidation, heat of oxidation, heat of wetting, specific heat, thermal conductivity, and permeability of stockpiles to air. These data are presented and discussed in detail for possible application to other studies. Results of computer simulations confirm past field experience on the storage of lignite containing as-mined moisture, and predict a greater risk of heat occurrence in stockpiles of dried lignite where experience is lacking. Successful storage was predicted for dried lignite of 20 pct moisture content, if it were cooled after drying and compacted to an interparticle void fraction of 9 pct (bulk density of 67 lb/cu ft) compared to 10 pet void fraction (72 lb/cu ft) for as-mined lignite.

"In an earlier consideration of the vapor pressure of iron 3/ it was found necessary to estimate the specific heat of gaseous iron to write satisfactory free-energy-of-vaporization equations for the several forms of iron. That the specific heat of gaseous iron will exceed greatly the classical value of Cp = 4.967 calories per gram-mole per degree is evident from even a cursory Lamination of its spectrum. The two lowest energy states are separated by only 416 cm-1, which is small enough so that the second state is effective, theoretically, at below room temperature. Such phenomena are by no means uncommon, but, while they have been recognized with substances that ordinarily are encountered as gases, classical gaseous specific--heat values still are used, often without question, for the vapors of metals and other elements that are solids under ordinary conditions. The following calculations for iron and copper gases are presented to illustrate the sort of deviations from classical values that are encountered with metal gases.The methods employed in calculating from spectroscopic data of thermodynamic quantities such as specific heat, entropy, and free energy have been described, in detail by Giauque 4/ and others. These will be briefly reviewed here. It is customary to separate the translational energy of a molecule from the rotational, vibrational, and electronic energies. In the case of monatomic gases, only translational and electronic Energies are involved. The classical expression for the specific heat of a mona¬tomic gas, Cp = 4.967, deals only with energy stored in the molecule as translational energy and consequently is valid only in temperature ranges in which no appreciable number of molecules undergoes a change in electronic state."

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYNowata County, in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, is one of the principal oil-producing counties of this stripper area. Many fields in the county were opened and much oil was produced before statehood. The location of the major fields, as defined by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, 2/ the outline of the areas of water-flooding activity, and the location of the several projects described in detail in this report are shown in figure 1.There was some drilling in the county earlier; but it was not until after 1904, when the Secretary of the Interior confirmed as valid the leases granted by the Cherokee Nation, that the major drilling activity began. Initial development in this part of Oklahoma was in the Chelsea field in Rogers County, which adjoins Novata County on the south. The activity spread rapidly northward to the Alluwe and Coody's Bluff fields, and then to the Nowata-Claggett field. Continued exploration resulted in discovery of the Delaware-Childers field, where some wells having an initial production of 1,000 barrels daily were completed. Fields discovered and developed during the next few years included the Lenepah (Elliott), Adair, California Creek, Curl Creek, Woody, and South Coffeyville. The oil-production history of Nowata County is shown in figure 2. In assembling the data for a production curve, it was found that the combined production records for Nowata and Rogers Counties were available for 1914 to 1951, inclusive, and that records for the individual counties were available only from 1926 to 1951, inclusive. The early production figures for the counties from 1905 to 1914, inclusive, except for 1909, were calculated from the initial production statistics of the Federal Geological Survey mineral resources bulletins and production data assembled by C. H. Beal. 3/ The production values for 1905 to 1926 for Nowata County were obtained by dividing the total production for the two counties by a percentage factor derived from known facts regarding the oil industry in the area. Production figures for the individual counties from 1926 to 1933, inclusive, were obtained from the files of the Oil and Gas Journal, and the figures from 1933 through 1951 were obtained from monthly reports of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission."

Field Demonstration of the Remote Mine Sealing System in a Coal Mine 8. 1 Selection of Field Test Site Eastern Associated Coal Corporation (EACC) offered its Federal No. 1 coal mine in Grant Town, West Virginia as the site for field testing of the remote sealing system. The choice of Federal No. 1 mine was particularly appropriate as the first attempt at fire control by remote sealing was done in this mine in 1963. EACC provided the men and equipment required for much of the initial preparation. Considerable assistance, advice, and background on coal mining technology was given by Mr. William Laird, Vice President for Research and Development, EACC, and by Mr. Lawrence Jackson, Resident Engineer at the Federal No. 1 mine. District 3 USBM office, the West Virginia Bureau of Mines, the Technical Support Group of the USBM, and Local 4047 of the United Mine Workers of America also cooperated. 8.2 Preparation of Field Test Site 8.2. 1 Underground Site Preparation The underground site chosen for the field testing was in a non-working portion of the mine within a few hundred feet of the main haulage road, as shown in Figure 80. Known as "Seven Switch, " this area was a 20 minute walk or 5 minute "jeep" trip from the man-trip shaft. Ten years having passed since this area was actively worked, considerable effort was required for gob clearing, roof bolting, rock dusting, and rejuvenating the track from the haulage road to the test area. "INTRODUCTION Retsof mine, adjoining the village of Retsof, Livingston County, New York, is about 5 miles northwest of Geneseo and 55 miles (air-line distance) due east of Buffalo. It is a single-bed rock-salt mine having extensive horizontal workings as much as 2-1/2 miles long and 1 mile wide and has been in continuous operation since 1885. Retsof tine is the largest producing salt mine in North America and is reputed to be the largest active salt mine in the world.Retsof is one of three large salt mines operated by the International Salt Co., Scranton, Pa.; T. Forster Courthope is general manager of Retsof and also of the company's Detroit salt mine in Michigan and has held that position for 27 years. He is assisted by Stanley Martin, general superintendent; R. Goetz, Maintenance superintendent; and John Riordan, mine superin¬tendent. All are old-timers at Retsof and, according to Courthope, contri¬buted the ""lion's share in bringing the mine to its present standard of safety.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTThis circular was made possible by the generous cooperation of T. Ten to twelve million tons of dust is produced by cement kilns annu-ally in the United States, resulting in a serious waste disposal problem. The Bureau of Mines investigated two alkali volatilization methods for converting this dust into materials for making portland cement and a useful potassium product. Portland cement kiln dust was found to be composed of finely ground cement raw materials (CaC03 and 8i02) having a layer of alkali sulfate (K2S04 and Na2S04). In this form, it cannot be directly recycled to cement kilns because concrete is weakened by a reaction between the alkali and the aggregate. Portland cements with 28-day strengths above 5,000 psi were produced from low-alkali residues using sintering and melting methods. For nearly complete removal of alkalies, primarily potassium sulfate, from cement kiln dust, a temperature above 1,300° C and a reducing atmosphere were required.

The 18th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, New Vork, October 5, 6, and 7, 1959. The meet was sponsored by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with State mine inspection agencies, management and labor of the mineral extractive industries, and other safety minded groups. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made a11 the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1959 contest. In recent years the issue of human stress response in emergency workers has begun to receive attention. This paper presents a rationale for considering human stress as a significant factor in the management of emergencies. It discusses the concept of stress, Critical Incident Stress in emergency responders, and introduces the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) process. It is suggested that, in a disaster, the CISD process can improve the effectiveness of response teams on site, their turnaround time on site, and post disaster time off the job. This paper, prepared by a US Bureau of Mines research psychologist, offers some ideas to the mining industry in general, mine rescue trainers, and more universally, to those responsible for developing emergency management plans.

The Bureau of Mines undertook the development and evaluation of a system to provide a simultaneous, on-line determination of both iron and silica in iron ore beneficiation streams as part of a program to improve the efficiency to mineral separation processes, Californium-252 (252-Cf) was the neutron source used in the system for measuring the amounts of silica and iron in bulk slurries by thermal neutron capture-gamma ray spectra analysis. The theory of thermal neutron capture-gamma ray reactions and their potential application to mineral processing stream analysis is discussed. The prototype system and supporting software developed by the Bureau is described. During the initial phase of the work, both simulated and actual pilot plant slurries were investigated using a 60-to 32-µg 252-Cf neutron source. The percent solids of the slurries was ranged from 2 to 40 percent and the silica and iron content ranged from 1.5 to 83 percent and from 10 to 65 percent, respectively. Accuracy of the determination of the components in the solids was dependent upon the percent solids in the slurry.

The Bureau of Mines conducted both laboratory and field investigations to study the effectiveness of medium-pressure (up to 30,000 psi) water jets in controlling the generation of airborne respirable dust during the hydraulic fragmentation of coal. Laboratory studies were conducted at the Farmington High Energy Test Site of the Twin Cities Mining Research Center, and field studies were carried out at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, Mount Morris, Pa., in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The water jets were produced by commercially available triplex pumps. The dust samples were collected by midget impinger samplers, and analyzed by electronic and optical counting techniques. Respirable dust concentration for a full-scale production model was projected at below 2 mg/m3, the maximum exposure allowed by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.

6. Development of Mine Sealant Material Systems 6. 1 Introduction The preliminary evaluation of material systems described in Section 3 led to the selection of the following four promising systems for further development: System A: Aggregate, Fly Ash System System B: Aggregate, Fly Ash, Urethane Foam System System C: Aggregate, Bulkhead, Light Expansive Concrete System D: Aggregate, Self-Supporting Thick Slurry Preliminary laboratory tests indicated that the building of effective bulkheads from one borehole would be extremely difficult. Two extra boreholes would be required adding to the overall cost of the system and making the system less attractive. Tests with light expansive concrete showed that bulkheads would be required, the material would not support itself. As a result, further development of this system was terminated. Foam concrete was selected as the most suitable material to be developed into a self-supporting, rapid-setting slurry. A laboratory investigation of its use for mine sealing was conducted during this program; the results are summarized in Section 6. 5 and details of the laboratory program are presented in Appendix B.

The Bureau of Mines performed a study of the availability of cobalt from market economy countries. The study entailed the detailed analysis of 97 deposits which contain 3.9 billion lb of cobalt at the demonstrated level; in 94 of the deposits cobalt is recovered as a byproduct, and in 3 it is considered the primary product. Since 97 pet of all recoverable cobalt is derived as a byproduct from copper and nickel deposits, the report focused on these two sources. At an assumed market price of $0.89flb for copper, $3.45/lb for nickel, $475/tr 021 for platinum, and $7/lb for cobalt, 1,330 million lb of cobalt at the demonstrated level are potentially available. This total includes 1,105 million lb of cobalt from copper properties, 190 million lb from nickel, 29 million lb from platinum, and 6 million lb from primary cobalt. This analysis indicates that the production cost for 589 million lb of cobalt can be totally covered by the revenues obtained from the other metals produced. The impacts of increases in capital investment and energy costs are also discussed.

In 1984, as part of a project to evaluate Alaskan occurrences of certain critical and strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines investigated a columbium-bearing regolith on upper Idaho Gulch, near Tofty, AK. The regolith is derived from weathering of a dolomitic marble and consists mostly of iron oxide minerals with accessory apatite, zircon, xenotime, rutile, monazite, and the columbium minerals aeschynite, columbite, and ilmenorutile. Two regolith lenses contain 340,000 lb of columbium resources at an average grade of 0.07 pct. Calculated composite concentrates from two regolith samples (approximately 200 lb each) contained 53 and 57 pct of the columbium at grades of 0.97 and 0.86 pct, respectively. In each case the grade could be improved to 1.1 pct Cb with a sacrifice of 9-pct recovery. The regolith's mineralogy, trace-element geochemistry, and similarity to descriptions of other columbium-enriched regoliths suggest that the underlying marble may be a carbonatite. The lack of associated alkalic igneous rocks and the stratiform nature of the regolith, however, may be interpreted as evidence for sedimentary origin of the marble. The marble and regolith are a lode source for some of the minerals in the Idaho Gulch placer deposit.

Infrared reference spectra are presented of compounds of importance in lead sulfide flotation research. Included are the spectra of several short chain alkyl xanthates of lead and zinc, the corresponding dixanthogen compounds, and the common oxidation products of lead sulfide and their sodium analogs. The spectra of several frequently used industrial flotation reagent xanthates are also presented. A thorough, well-documented discussion is given of the various corrections made to correct the as recorded absorption band data to near absolute values.

This report describes field investigations conducted in 1953 of two occurrences of manganese and a separate magnetic anomaly in the Southern manganese district of Aroostook County, vicinity of Houlton, Maine -the Pierce deposits, in Hammond Plantation Township; the Burnham anomaly, also in Hammond Plantation; and the Nickerson-Farm prospect in Hodgdon Township. The manganese occurs in a thinly laminated sedimentary rock containing manganiferous carbonate interlayered with fine-grained metamorphosed sediment, rich in chlorite or hematite. The surrounding rocks are mostly dark gray-green slates. Samples composited for metallurgical testing from the Pierce deposits and the Nickerson-Farm prospect assayed 9.0 to 12.3 percent of manganese. More than 90 percent of the manganese could be extracted with sulfuric acid, but in most instances 30 to 40 percent of the iron was also extracted. Leaching tests indicated that, after being reduced in a hydrogen stmosphere at 600° C., about 85 percent of the manganese could be selectively extracted by a solution of ammonia-ammonium carbonate with iron extraction of only 14 percent.
