"The curtailment of imports of foreign potash during the World War directed attention to the necessity of establishing a domestic source of potash for fertilizer, and considerable study has been given to the subject by Government bureaus, research organizations, and private individuals. These studies have covered all known sources of potash, and among them the extensive greensand deposits of New Jersey in which the potash content is found in the mineral glauconite have been investigated.Several hundred patents have been obtained covering processes for the extraction of potash from siliceous minerals, but up to the present time none have proved successful on a large commercial scale.When the investigation of the potash deposits of Texas was started by the Federal Government, the laboratory study of the drill cores was assigned to the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station at New Brunswick, New Jersey, with the object of ascertaining a possible commercial method of utilization.The purpose of this preliminary study was to investigate existing literature and previous investigations to ascertain the extent and availability of the deposits, the extent of commercial success so far attained in potash extraction, the most promising known methods and by-products obtained from them, probable markets, and possibility of competition with foreign potash, and by a study of these data to determine whether further chemical engineering analysis and laboratory investigation were warranted.As the study advanced it became evident that adequate reserves of green-sand were available for many years supply. and that whereas many processes had been patented few had been tried commercially. The vapor pressures of liquid columbium and liquid hafnium were deter-mined by the Langmuir free evaporation method as a part of the Bureau of Mines program on the study of transition metals. An electron-beam furnace with a water-cooled copper crucible was used for melting. Temperature was measured with a two-color ratio pyrometer. Least-squares analyses of the vapor pres-sure data gave the following equations: [Logp (atm) = 5 .429 -31,310 T] for liquid columbium in the range 2,740° - 3,140° K, and [Log p (atm) = 5,690 28 T] for liquid zirconium in the range 2,500° -2,810° K. Third-law evaluations of each data set gave mean heats of sublimation (298.15° K) of 175.1±3.2 kcal/mole and 148.3±1.2 kcal/mole for columbium and hafnium, respectively. Second-law standard heats of sublimation determined from sigma plots and from sigma-prime plots agreed fairly well with the third-law values. The sigma-prime plots gave standard entropies of sublimation of 30.96±0.84 eu and 33.S6±0.44 eu for columbium and hafnium, respectively.

Reservoir oil in the Greater Aneth area, Utah, part of the Paradox basin, was studied to detect variation in oil characteristics within the reservoir and to determine its relation to age of accumulation and fluid equilibrium. At least three subsurface oil samples were obtained from each of the four largest of five field divisions comprising a producing area of 45,000 acres. Height of the oil column in the Pennsylvanian Desert Creek zone is about 230 ft. In general, the oil characteristics were found to be uniform across the area, and averages were developed for use in engineering applications. Average saturation pressure was 1,780 psia; the oil was undersaturated at the initial reservoir pressure, 2,200 psia. Variation in saturation pressure shows a lack of complete fluid equilibrium and continuing diffusion of solution gas from the main body of the reservoir to two extensions linked by narrow arms. By assuming early accumulation, the time involved in this diffusion process was calculated to be about the same as the age of the reservoir formation. Cause of the concentration of gas in the main body is attributed to differential entrapment during accumulation of oil and gas from an exterior source.

This paper, describing the operations of the Louisville Cement Co. in quarrying limestone for the manufacture of quicklime, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on stone quarries throughout the United States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. Lignite samples were collected so as to be widely representative of the extensive deposits in the western north-central area. These were carbonized at temperatures ranging from 450° to 550° C., according, to a standardized procedure. In general, product yields varied; extremes obtained on selected samples show char recoveries on the moisture- and ash-free basis as 56.7 percent for slack lignite or "leonardite" to 80.8 percent for a concentrate of the fusain component from a typical face sample; normal lignite samples averaged approximately 70 percent. Tar-plus-light-oil yields ranged from 3.3 percent for the fusain concentrate to 11.0 percent for a normal sample, averaging approximately 8 percent; gas recoveries varied more widely both in yield and in composition, ranging, from 10.0 percent to 27.7 percent, the latter being from leonardite and quite high in carbon dioxide. Sampling was conducted with the view of representing, as nearly as possible, all beds delineated by Brant (2);4/ many are necessarily missing since collection was confined largely to worked deposits. Data presented in this report indicate a general uniformity of North-Central lignite in respect to low-temperature carbonization, with a few possible exceptions of a local nature. When processed according to the indicated conditions, maximum tar yield may be realized with minimum loss of recoverable heating value of the original coal. Natural weathering of lignite, however, does affect tar yield adversely and should be held to a practical minimum in any commercial operation.

"INTRODUCTION Secondary recovery of oil by water-flooding is practiced more extensively in North Texas than in any other section of the State, and the progress and experience of the operations in that area are of continuing interest to all branches of the oil industry. The first Bureau of Mines report on water flooding in North Texas 7/ chronicled the activities from December 7, 193f', when the Railroad Commission of Texas granted The Texas Co. the first permit to inject water into an oil-bearing sand, through 1944. This second report has been prepared as a supplement to Report of Investigations 3906 to show the progress and expansion of water-flooding. The format of this report is almost identical with what of report of Investigations 3906, except for a few miner changes. For the sake of brevity, certain basic information contained on the first report has not been repealed, and the reader is urged to consider the two reports as corporation writings.The North Texas area, as encompassed by the two reports, corresponds Railroad Commission of Texas Districts 7P and 9. Oil-development operations in the two districts, since oil was discovered in 1904, have resulted in the recovery of approximately 1,400,000,000 barrels of oil from a proved area that has been estimated to exceed 413,000 acres. During October barrels of oil was produces by primary and secondary-recovery methods from 1,746 flowing wells and 25,211 pumping wells, a daily average 6.6 barrels per well. Of this total volume of oil recovered in October 1947, 47,965 barrels (0.87 percent) was recovered from leases on which water-flooding operations were in progresses."

The Bureau of Mines developed a stopping design that allows the stopping to be blown down by strong blast forces without incurring any permanent damage. Trials with the new stopping, dubbed the quick-fix blowout stopping, have been conducted in the Bureau's Safety Research Coal Mine at Bruceton, Pa., and in two New Mexico uranium mines. Results have been favorable in all cases. Compared with conventional brattice stoppings or wood bulkheads, the quick-fix blowout stopping is easier and less time consuming to install, is easier to maintain, and in most cases is just as efficient an air barrier. There is same indication that the shape of the stopping makes it more resistant to blast fore s than the fabric stoppings now in use.

"Vanadium and uranium occur widely distributed throughout western Colorado and eastern Utah, and a few deposits have been found in northeastern Arizona and northwestern. New Mexico. The area in which it occurs includes approximately 10,000 square miles and is generally referred to as the vanadium region of Colorado and Utah.The majority of the deposits consist of replacement bodies and impregnations of rare minerals in the lower Morrison formation of Jurassic age. The ore bodies are flat, with irregular margins, and most of them conform to the stratification.The ""rim rock"" topography of the region includes many steep-walled canyons and plateaus, which afford an abundance of outcrops that have been responsible for most of the discoveries of mineralized areas. Delimitation of ore bodies within the areas is accomplished most effectively by core drilling from the surface.The deposits were discovered in 1899 and from 1911 to 1923 wore worked extensively for radioactive uranium ores, principally carnotite.The discovery and marketing of the richer and more cheaply mined pitch-blende ores of the Belgian Congo left the Colorado-Utah deposits without economic importance as sources of radium and uranium, and the region became inactive in 1923. After a period of comparative inactivity, the rising demand of the alloy-steel industry for vanadium renewed interest in the deposits, which were known to contain that metal. By 1938, vanadium production in the area had achieved respectable proportions, and new impetus was given to it by the United States’ entry into World War II in December 1941. In 1942, new treatment plants for vanadium ores were completed in Monticello, Utah, and Durango, Colo. In order to meet the requirements of these and other plants in the region, it became necessary to open new vanadium mines and prepare old onus for production.In an effort to stimulate mining, the Metals Reserve Company initiated a stock-piling program and appointed the united states Vanadium Corporation, to act as its purchasing agent.The extra production was expected to come largely from small, independent operators whose limited funds did not permit them to maintain development and exploratory programs. Study of conditions made it apparent that extensive exploration would be necessary to sustain production, and accordingly the Bureau of Mines initiated an exploratory drilling project on a cooperative basis with the Geological Survey. The principal objects of the work were to enlarge the known ore reserves of the area and, if possible, discover new ones. The results have been gratifying in both respects."

During the fiscal year ended September 30, 1932, there were 27 fatalities in the coal mines of Indiana. Four of this number occurred in small mines employing less than 10 men, over which the State Inspection Department has no jurisdiction. In addition to these coal mine fatalities, an explosives accident in a clay mine resulted fatally to one man. Tables 1 and 2, which follow, list the fatalities as to cause and occupation. This paper describing the mining methods of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The story of mining at Inspiration is of particular interest because, after 127,812,000 tons of low-grade copper ore were successfully mined, the mining method was changed from block caving to open-pit. As the open pit became deeper, many features of the former block-caving operation that were exposed elucidated concepts of the mechanics of caving that previously had been assumed but not observed. The conversion to open-pit mining was accomplished by unique combinations of equipment and the introduction of ingenious engineering and operating practices that have extended the expected life of the mine for many years.

In this issue, the Bureau of Mines announces the availability of the latest of its Mineral Perspectives series: ?MP-4, mineral Industry of Western Europe." This publication describes the mineral industries of 19 Western European countries. For readers unfamiliar with this new series, reproduced below and on the two succeeding pages, is the section dealing with the mineral industries of France. Information regarding acquisition of this publication is found inside the back cover of this issue. FRANCE France is a moderately important producer of minerals, including iron ore, coal, potash, fluorspar, and uranium. In addition, France is a significant processor of imported minerals, chiefly for its own consumption. In general, it has exportable surpluses only of a little iron ore (low-grade ore exported to Luxembourg) and some nonmetallics.

One by one new metals come to share the burden of modern industry. Long before the Christian era potters and glass workers employed fine and costly blue pigments that contained cobalt. Cobalt blue class has been found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many of the colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients, however, were apparently unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt, and it was not until late in the 17th century that the existence of the element was recognized, Writers in the Middle Ages referred to "cobalos" as an evil spirit that haunted mines and caused trouble to the miners. Subsequently the German worms "Kobold," meaning goblin, came to be applied to any baffling mineral and particularly to minerals that resembled ores but failed to yield metal when smelted. Even to-day there is something of an air of mystery about cobalt, and a medieval cloak of secrecy still surrounds many of the metallurgical processes employed in its production. "Zaffre" was mentioned about the middle of the sixteenth century by Biringuccio, and in 1735 the metal war, first prepared by G. Brandt. To preparation of cobalt compounds, however, must have been carried on in at least a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits of Schneeberg in 1470. By 1790 there were 25 works engaged in the industry, rust of them located in Saxony, but the total output of these works probably did not exceed 300 tone of cobalt annually, mostly in the fore of smalt. The smalt which contained approximately 6 per cent cobalt was sold in Venice in 1520 at about 16 cents a pound. A few refineries in Holland supplied the Irish linen trade, contributed a farce amount to the Dutch linen industries, and alto provided smaller quantities for the manufactuer of litmus in Holland. "INTRODUCTION The determination of moisture in coal is an empirical test, because the time, temperature, and equipment are specified. The essential features of the equipment, and details of the procedure are given in A.S.T.M. Designation: D271-44 5/. According to the specifications, the following features should be incorporated in the equipment used:1. Oven must have uniform temperature in all parts.2. Oven must be constructed with minimum of air space.3. Oven must have means of changing the air two to four times per minute.4. Air must be dried over sulfuric acid (sp. gr. 1.84).The analytical procedures governing most of the nation's coal purchases are those given in A.S.T.M. Standards referred to above. These standards are general and of such scope as to cover all ranks and types of coal. In cases where only the moisture is required, a faster method than the standard procedure is desired.The semi-automatic moisture tester manufactured by the Brabender Corp. has proved itself in many industrial processes where the rapid estimation of moisture is of vital importance. With the approval of A. C. Fieldner, chairman, A.S.T.M. Committee D-5, and through the courtesy of Lowell Malan, chief chemist, United Electric Coal Companies, who loaned the tester, tests were made to determine the feasibility of using this instrument to determine the moisture in coal."

This report presents the results of a study for the Bureau of Mines to compare loan terms for non-fuel mineral projects in developing countries, from various International Financial Institutions (IFIs), and from private sector commercial sources. The study compares IFI and commercial loan terms for seven mineral projects in developing countries. The International Financial Institutions represented are: ? International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) ? International Finance Corporation (IFC) ? Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) ? Asian Development Bank (ADB) ? International Monetary Fund (IMF) In addition, the costs of financing for these mineral projects were compared with the costs of long-term debt to the five largest U.S. mineral producers.

PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in level-dependent hearing protectors and inexpensive personal acoustic monitors. RESEARCH SUMMARY: The results of previous NIOSH research show that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals and that miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and gender. Using hearing thresholds at 4,000 Hz as an indicator, coal miners experience hearing loss 2.5 to 3 times greater than would be expected for persons not exposed to occupational noise. At age 50, 90% of coal miners and 49% of metal/nonmetal miners were found to have a hearing impairment. In comparison, only 9% of a nonoccupationally exposed control group had a hearing impairment at age 50.

Explosives have been fired electrically for several decades. Mountains have been tunneled, deep shafts sunk, extensive coal and metal mine workings excavated and, in times of war, railroads, buildings, bridges, and fortifications have been destroyed by means of electrically fired explosives. Modern engineering depends so much on explosives that their safe and efficient handling and especially their detonation are of prime importance to all those connected with the use of explosive agents. Electric shot-firing is only one method of igniting explosives, but it is rapidly spreading and because of certain inherent safety features should be encouraged. Data collected by the Bureau of Mines indicate that in the United States a large percentage of the blasting in quarries, shafts,· and tunnels, and from 15 to 25 per cent of the blasts in mining operations, are set off electrically. The Bureau of Mines is interested in electric shot-firing because of its use in mining, and especially because electric methods, when properly applied, are undoubtedly safer than other methods commonly used. Electrical problems of many kinds must be solved in dealing with the various phases of electric shot-firing. Success in using an electric detonator is closely linked with the resistance of its bridge, the resistance of its leg wires, and the insulation of its current-carrying parts. The proper layout of a circuit where a number of shots are to be fired simultaneously depends not only on the types of detonators that are used and their arrangement and interconnections, but also on the size and insulation of the wire leading back to the source of power, and even on the source of power itself. Various types of electric shot-firing machines have been developed, and these offer still another field for study. In investigations of electric detonators and electric blasting equipment, the oscillograph is valuable because it can record electrical activity over very short intervals of time. By its use more complete information about electrical performance can be obtained than by any other means.
