A recently completed series of projects funded by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the U.S. Minerals Management Service was designed to assess the distribution of heavy minerals on the inner continental shelf adjacent to Virginia. These projects indicate that a suite of minerals of both strategic and economic interest is present. Analysis of several hundred grab and core samples shows that zircon, monazite, and titanium minerals (ilmenite, rutile, and leucoxene) occur in quantities that probably warrant further study by the mineral industry. Furthermore, side-scan sonography and shallow seismic profiles have provided information on the thickness and areal extent of the mineral-bearing sands. Possible development of the resource is enhanced by a potential use of offshore sand for beach nourishment. The results of the preliminary studies have been presented in open-file publications and oral reports in order that the mineral industry might have an up to date basis upon which to consider more exploratory work. Much of the effort south of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay was made in cooperation with and enhanced by an independent study of sand resources for beach nourishment and other needs. Preliminary review of the quantitative analyses of the heavy-mineral content of several hundred samples demonstrates that the distribution of high concentrations is non-uniform. IHC Merwede is world market leader in the construction of specialist dredging equipment; it is a company with a rich history. The Netherlands is a coastal western country for which water management is a very important issue. Without the enclosure of the coastal areas with dikes and dunes almost two third of the Netherlands would be flooded. These activities are mostly performed by the dredging industry and are the foundation of the dredging industry as it is today. Besides land protection this industry also carries out infrastructure maintenance and performs land reclamation projects. In essence the dredging industry is specialized in horizontal excavation activities and operations in shallow waters with the purpose of gathering bottom sediments and disposing it at a different location. The development is that the activities are moving to deeper waters to a depth of up to 150m. A few years ago IHC Merwede received a request to perform the shallow water excavation techniques at a depth of approximately 2000 meters for the deep sea mining market. In response to the increasing number of requests for deep sea dredging and mining application solutions, IHC Merwede combined all of its activities in this sector to create a new, specially equipped operational unit, IHC Deep Sea Dredging & Mining (IHC DSDM).

"Recent concerns over the availability of many mineral raw materials, and newly available technological developments, produced renewed interest in deep-sea mining. However, environmental concerns, with variable degrees of justification, are raising opposition to the concept. The forecast for the behavior of consumption versus availability of many raw materials, nearly all critical metals, arguably show that consumption will grow much faster than resource discovery onshore. Finding new sources of raw materials seems inescapable. The deep seafloor stands out as the only likely candidate.Sea Floor Mining and the EcosystemMarine mining has already started, decades ago, for diamonds, currently up to depths near 400m. Although the industry recognizes there is a footprint, it considers the footprint quite minor, because the area mined is small: in Namibia, where offshore diamond mining is now 70% of the country’s total, only 3% of the concession of 3,700 sq miles (9600km2) have been mined. As plans to mine deep-sea massive sulphide deposits and polymetallic nodules progress, the environmental concerns grow. INTRODUCTION One of the major concerns for deep seabed mining is its environmental impact, from the disturbance of benthic communities due to the mining activity to the disposal of mine tailings back to the ocean. Yet a significant amount of waste materials would be produced from the on-deck processing on the mining platform, all the materials that produced on the mining platform are to be shipped to the land unless the related regulation and guidelines are developed by IMO and ISA (ISA, 2018). Still, ecotoxicology data for the deep seabed minerals from case studies in deep-sea tailings disposal (DSTD) and submarine tailings disposal (STD) sites are lacking and all other related aspects are also largely unknown. This year, the Republic of Korea has started a research project for the more comprehensive understanding of chemical and physical properties of mine tailings from the on-deck processing and the possible environmental impacts on the marine organisms after its disposal. Based on the scientific data collected from this project, Korea would be able to make recommendations for the methods and technical standards for the deep seabed mining discharges. The subjects of this project are threefold: to understand the physical/chemical properties of the tailings, to model the dispersion of particulates after the disposal, and to assess its impact on the marine ecology. Laboratory Experiments Producing Mine Tailings First, the possible waste materials are produced by mimicking the collecting and dressing processes at sea. The polymetallic nodules (PN) would be mined by using a collector lifting the crushed nodules out of the bottom sediment, and the bottom water, accompanying sediment, and the fine nodule particles which are too small to be recovered would be discharged to the ocean and thus are considered as tailings (Schriever and Thiel, 2013). In the laboratory, PN is crushed into the fragments smaller than 2 cm, abraded in the water using the rock mill, and then sieved to obtain the fine particles to be disposed.

Methane hydrate, a solid compound formed from methane and water, occurs naturally in permafrost regions on-land and in deep continental slopes offshore and has been examined as future energy resources. The existence of methane hydrate in the eastern Nankai Trough region, offshore Japan, was confirmed by drilling the MITI well “Nankai Trough” in 1999. Aiming commercialization of methane hydrate production, the Research Consortium for Methane Hydrate Resources in Japan (MH21, core associations: JOGMEC[*1], AIST[*2] and ENNA[*3]) under METI [*4] has been executing geological and geophysical surveys around the eastern Nankai Trough since 2001 as a nation project.

Cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts and nodules ores from seamount areas contain volcanic and sedimentary rocks as substrate or nuclei. During the mining operation, these rocks should be separated as unfavorable waste rocks with the manganese minerals. The ferromanganese crust and nodule ores require mineral processing to remove the substrate rock before the smelting. Deep-sea manganese nodule ores in contrast contain vanishingly small rocks, and can be directly treated with a smelting process without mineral processing treatment. This paper shows phisical and chemical description of the ores for the purpose of mineral processing, and reports liberation degree measurements of crushed ores and gravity separation tests. A mineral processing treatment flow is proposed from the obtained results. There is the first report of applying gravity separation in the treatment of coarse sized crushed products of cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust and nodules ore.

The study of Co-rich manganese crusts has reached the level which allows to start prospecting works in the observable future, and furthermore, probably, exploitation of ore deposits. In this connection, among other goals, the necessity to analyze a distribution of ore bed parameters in details is quite urgent. Foremost, these are crust thicknesses in connection with landforms and elements of submarine mountains relief. This report is based on representative sampling made in course of research cruises run by SSC Yuzhmorgeologiya over guyots of the Magellan Seamounts. Crustal covers could overlie seafloor surfaces which are confined to a various landforms and elements of relief under the condition, that they are free of sediments. These are planed parts of a summit surfaces, edges, spurs, rectilinear parts of slopes, intermountain saddles and volcanic edifices. It is known, that crustal thicknesses are different at a various forms of relief [1]. We processed statistically the data around crustal thicknesses, which were sampled by dredging and submersible drilling (Tables 1, 2).

In October-November 1993, the Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering, Memorial University of Newfoundland and University of Victoria jointly carried out reconnaissance surveys at Pine Cove, Baie Verte, Newfoundland. Pine Cove is the site of a multi-year study examining the environmental impact of a shallow water small-scale marine placer gold mining operation. The reconnaissance survey data collected will be used to develop a multi-year environmental effects monitoring (EEM) program for Pine Cove, Baie Verte, but more generally an EEM protocol for shallow water small-scale marine placer mining, which meets the requirements of Canadian government regula¬tors such as Environment Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The Pine Cove mining operation is currently scheduled for the summer of 1995, and will use two mining methods: a hydraulic suction dredge in shallow water (<10 meters) operated by a scuba diver, and a hydraulically actuated clamshell dredge in deeper water (-30 m). A centrifugal concentrator will be used to extract the heavy minerals from the mined marine sediments, and the tailings will be returned to the sea floor via a suspended discharge pipe. The reconnaissance work at Pine Cove included geophysical, geochemical, oceanographic and biologi¬cal surveys, providing data which will enable prediction of the potential environmental impacts of the proposed mining operation. This abstract discusses selected recent technology developments at the Deep Submergence Lab at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution aimed at fundamentally changing the nature and scope of AUV operations in the deep ocean. The Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Sentry is described in its current configuration with discussion of emerging capabilities. Telepresence enhanced AUV operations are discussed including moving both operations and data processing personnel off the vessel. Autonomous Surface Vessel (ASV) aided AUV operations are discussed including recent experiments where an ASV provided both navigational aiding and a satellite based relay for acoustic communication of telemetery and mission redirection. New flexible communications strategies to perform intervention and manipulation tasks from an untethered vehicle are discussed. The abstract concludes with a brief discussion of industrial collaborations, including the newly launched Center for Marine Robotics.

"The conceptual basis of the developed model is based on the ideas that evolution of geological-geomorphological structure of the CCZ is controlled by four types of geologic factors: geodynamic, sedimentary, volcano-tectonic and erosion-lithodynamic. In terms of time span two factors (geodynamic and sedimentary) can be considered as permanent and the other two as sporadic.The geodynamic factor is responsible for two interrelated geological processes. One is going under conditions of the axial zones of spreading centers and results in formation of the CCZ basement. Historically this process is considered as a starting point for each of the heterochronous fragments of the CCZ. The second one controls gradual shifting towards the Pacific Plate (Hawaiian direction) and subsidence to greater depths of the neogenic fragments (basement). Thus, those processes control basic topography, geomorphology and the seabed depth within the CCZ.Volcanogenic-hydrothermal activity of the EPR is one of the main sources of the ore components, which finally compose manganese nodules as a result of complicated processes of their dissemination and transportation to the bottom in dissolved and organically bound forms.The role of the other constant factor (sedimentary) is displayed in two ways. Firstly, initial relief is smoothed under the influence of this factor, which, subsequently, makes favorable conditions for manganese nodules formation. Secondly, it favors transportation of the majority of the ore components, participating in manganese nodules formation into zones of active nodules formation."

One of the numerous challenge for underwater mining is the positioning. This paper describes an architecture for the integration of an Ultra Short BaseLine (USBL), an Acoustic Synthetic BaseLine (ASBL) operating in Sparse Array mode and a Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) closely coupled with an Inertial Navigation System (INS) for precise subsea positioning in severe environments. By using such architectures, the INS can help to reduce the noise on the measurements coming from acoustic sensors. Another advantage is the capability to reduce the number of required transponders on the seabed, and as a consequence, reduce the time for the deployment and calibration of each transponder. The paper further describes sea-trials performed to assess the ability of a complete positioning system to provide decimetric positioning precision even with a single beacon deployed in the navigation area.

Several potential marine mineral deposits of various types have been identified within the Norwegian EEZ. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology has recently designed and built a new remotely operated vehicle (ROV) system for scientific investigations of the deep-ocean and seafloor. A program to locate and investigate the most interesting of the identified marine mineral deposits using the new ROV system is underway. The ROV has been designed for detailed survey and sampling tasks. Although initially built for a major marine archaeology project, the design is equally suited to locate and investigate marine mineral deposits. The ROV is equipped with a high precision multi-sensory package that consists of various high quality cameras and lighting systems (together with state-of-the-art video and photo mosaic systems), several sonar systems, magnetometer and various other sensors. The ROV is also equipped with a 7-function manipulator arm and an excavation system. Internal collection baskets are used to store material for retrieval to the surface. A closed-loop control dynamic positioning system is used for detailed positioning of the ROV. Position data and other information are stored in a digital data management system. The ROV will also be used together with a specially developed remotely operated tool (ROT). The size and shape of this benthic lander can be adjusted before it is carefully lowered to the seafloor. The ROV can be docked on a moving platform on the ROT, to do detailed scientific investigations. The ROT can also be equipped with a separate sensor and system package, including drilling, excavation and coring units. This paper will present the new remotely operated system and the planned projects in Norway.

"Significant uncertainty is associated with predicting future trends in deep-sea mining projects, especially when attempting to assess markets for associated products such as ships and collectors. In order to help European Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to appraise the future market share of deep-sea mining equipment, a methodology was developed that allows to assess and predict equipment turnover. This study presents a market analysis, which evaluates the scale of the potential market for deep-sea mining equipment for seafloor manganese nodules (SMnN) and seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) based on six key drivers: (i) the worldwide deposit potential of SMnN and SMS deposits, (ii) the profitability of deep-sea mining projects, (iii) the metal market of seven associated metals (Cu, Zn, Au, Ag, Co, Ni, Mn), (iv) the current legal and environmental situation in the Area, (v) investment and maintenance costs, and (vi) a competitor analysis.Figures for the different key drivers are based on public reports and expert interviews. Large uncertainties as well as contrasting views and expectations resulted in different options (scenarios) for the future development of the deep-sea mining market. Several scenarios were developed and based on the future number of “mining projects” in the short-term (2022-2041) and the long-term (2042-2061). The number of such mining projects has been calculated based on the combined analysis of the different key drivers.In the scope of this study, the definition of a “mining project” is a deep-sea mining operation for SMnN or SMS lasting for 20 years. This operation includes the purchase of a set of deep-sea mining equipment consisting of a mining support vessel, a vertical transport system and the seafloor mining equipment, in line with other work within the EU FP7 project “Blue Mining” (GA No. 604500)."

The big money is backing both manganese nodules and manganese crusts as the most likely deep ocean mining development by 2010, but seafloor massive sulphides of copper/gold/zinc offer an alternative bet for a start-up by 2010. A study of the ?form guide? or comparison of these resources provides direction on which resources are economic candidates for commercial deep ocean mining development by 2010. This paper covers the commercial and technical issues of exploration, resource definition, drilling/sampling, sea bed mining options, mine plans, environmental issues, legal tenure and capital and operating costs (i.e., profitability) of these two mineral types. Nautilus Minerals has just completed a pre-feasibility engineering study of mining sea floor massive copper/gold/zinc sulphides at 2,000 m depth. The Nautilus study reviewed a range of mining and lifting options, settling on tracked continuous drum cutter miners to produce 2 million tons per annum of high grade ore. Capital costs are shown to be at least 30% lower than a land based copper mine of the same production capacity. Likewise 75% of world?s copper would be produced at a higher operating cost that the proposed seafloor mine. This paper then draws on the Nautilus study for comparison with earlier feasibility studies by others on manganese nodule mining to predict the likely directions in deep ocean mining to 2010.

Submarine hydrothermal activity and mineralization related to island arc volcanism along the Tonga arc were explored during two research cruises in October 2009 (KODOS 09H) and February 2010 (KODOS 10H), respectively. In KODOS 09H cruise, geophysical survey, including multi-beam bathymetry, marine seismic and magnetic investigations, was performed on 10 volcanoes to find out possible structural discontinuity that can act as fluid pathway for formation of hydrothermal deposits at submarine caldera system. The result provided acoustic and seismic image maps and magnetic anomaly maps of targeted volcanoes. Then, detailed seafloor observation and sampling as well as deep tow side scan sonar survey were performed in KODOS 10H cruise on 5 volcanoes which are selected as targeted areas from the previous cruise. Among 5 targeted volcanoes, TA26 shows most extensive hydrothermal activity. Hydrothermal vents and alteration zone were observed on western caldera and summit of eastern cone of the TA26. Although only weak hydrothermal alteration was observed on eastern cone, mineralized fragments of chimney and mound were sampled from western wall of central caldera on TA25 volcano. On TA12 volcano, strong hydrothermal plume and alteration zone was detected during video tows operated between SW scoria cone and small ridge. However, only small amount of hydrothermal altered rocks were collected from TA12. Although hydrothermal activity and mineralization might be formed, supported by plume detection and result of geophysical survey, only weak alteration zones were observed on other two volcanoes (TA19 and TA22). The exploration area generally show shallow depth up to several tens of meters on summit where subsurface boiling of hydrothermal fluid might occur due to low hydraulic pressure, which can affect on styles of hydrothermal venting and mineralization process observed on Tonga submarine arc volcanoes.

Several metallogenic zones including Sakmara, Magnitogorsk, and East-Ural zones were revealed in the Ural fold belt (Fig. 1). These zones are considered to be the paleogeodinamic sectors corresponding to marginal sea, island arc system, and uplift respectively. Ferruginous-manganiferous sediments in the Southern Urals are hosted by the basalt-rich volcano-sedimentary series of the Magnitogorsk paleoisland arc system with West- and East Magnitogorsk island arcs and Sibai inter-arc basin. The manganiferous mineralization occurs in association with the Middle Devonian stratabound hematite-quartz rocks and bedded red jaspers localized on the foot or handing walls of massive sulfide deposits. Fe-Mn nodules are widespread in jasper horizons on the flanks of manganese deposits. We have studied Fe-Mn nodules from the Faizulino and Yanzigitovo Mn-deposits formed in the Sibai inter-arc basin and compared them with well known Fe-Mn nodules from modern oceans.

Mineral exploration problems in the S.W. Pacific are not unique to that region, but a combination of favourable circumstances render it an ideal area to attempt to solve such problems. The land area of the S.W. Pacific island nations is only a fraction of the total sea area they can claim under current International Law. Hence, they have a great need to explore and evaluate their offshore areas. For the past ten years the focus of this work has been CCOP/SOPAC which has individually and jointly with other groups initiated and maintained far reaching marine mineral exploration programmes. In association with CCOP/SOPAC the writer has obtained and analysed approximately 650 sediment samples from the S.W. Pacific region for seventeen elements. Multivariate statistical techniques have been applied to the data set. The aim has been to identify chemically anomalous sediments reflecting either sea floor mineralisation and/or mineralisation on adjacent land areas.

The City of Honolulu mines sand from nearshore deposits for beach maintenance. The suction dredging operation creates a discharge plume which is carried by currents and other motions until it settles out of the water column. The dispersion of such a plume is influenced by distribution of particle size, as well as site dynamics. Interest in dispersion characteristics stem$ from concern about possible deleterious influences of such a plume on the nearshore environment. The behavior of such plumes has been modeled by Brandsma and Divoky (1976), as well as others. This study is an attempt to calibrate a plume model (modified from Brandsma and Divoky&apos;s model by Wang), using concentration, turbidity, and fluid velocity measurements of a small plume taken under field conditions. This calibrated model could then be used to predict dispersion characteristics of a much larger plume. Sand suction-dredged at a depth of 12m with a four-inch pipe and discharged at midwater was used to create a test plume closely simulating the conditions found during regular mining operations. Water samples containing suspended material were taken at varying distances from the discharge, from which concentrations were measured in the lab. Transmitted natural light measurements were used to provide estimates of turbidity. Current velocities were measured using current meters, as well as drogue-following methods. These data were then used to help estimate the vertical diffusion coefficient in the model.

With the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development fast approaching it is timely to reflect on the integral role seafloor polymetallic nodule mining will play in facilitating sustainable development and alleviating global poverty. Polymetallic nodule mining presents mankind with a unique opportunity to advance the world?s sustainable development aspirations, particularly given the ultimate beneficiaries from polymetallic nodule mining will be the billions of people around the world that require greater access to more affordable minerals for their social and economic development. This paper discusses the importance of polymetallic nodule mining in the context of sustainable development and forecasted growth trends, supply and demand dynamics, the decreasing grade and quality of terrestrial mineral resources, and the Green Economy, as well as in light of a comparative analysis that demonstrates polymetallic nodule mining offers a socially and environmentally advantageous alternative to terrestrial mining.
