Generally pillars in the Southern African hard rock tabular underground mining environment are designed using either empirical pillar design formulae or numerical modelling (analytical) methods utilizing the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. However, none of the pillar design methodologies employed takes cognizance of weak layers either within the pillar material or in the immediate foundation of the pillar. Over the past few years, the presence of a weak layer either within the pillar material or within the immediate foundation of the pillar has resulted in the closure of one platinum mine (Everest Mine), closure of one chrome mine (Wonderkop Chrome) and large-scale instability in a couple of chrome and platinum mines in South Africa and Zimbabwe. A study has been initiated to better understand the failure mode and strengths of the pillars where pillar failure associated with weak layers occurred. Owing to the infancy of the study into the failed pillar strength and failure mechanism, the purpose of this paper is to highlight the circumstances that led to the collapse of mining sections and a shaft, and the difficulty associated with designing pillars in the Southern African chrome and platinum mining operations.

"A review of historic operating practices of the heap leach pads at the Los Filos Mine, Mexico, revealed periods of restricted cyanide addition, reduced leach time, and insufficient irrigation flow. These issues all led to the buildup of partially leached recoverable gold inventory within the leach pads. Drawing down this inventory represented an opportunity to bring value forward. This paper outlines the strategic initiatives which were implemented as efforts to accelerate the inventory drawdown, including geophysical mapping and pressure injection.INTRODUCTION Los Filos is a heap-leach operation located in the Guerrero gold belt in southern Mexico. Operational and hydraulic challenges at the Los Filos Mine have led to a buildup of gold in inventory within the leach pads. Operationally, periods of restricted reagent addition, reduced leach time, and insufficient irrigation flow have compounded over the last eight years, and resulted in significant inventory growth. Hydraulically, the leach pad has issues with low permeability and solution channeling due to the fines and clay content of the ore. The leach pad is storing high-grade pregnant leach solution (PLS) as perched aquifers above areas that are compacted and difficult to drain. These operational and hydraulic challenges made it particularly difficult to spatially predict the precise locations of the inventory build-up. Fortunately, the challenges at Los Filos are not unique to the mine, and others have taken steps elsewhere to reduce metal inventory through a program that targets areas for inventory drawdown. For example, Ghorbani et al. (2016) noted that a method of injecting barren reagent solutions, applied directly to specific areas of a leach pad to reduce inventory, was presented by Wan and Brierley (1997) and Wan (1997). Seal (2004; 2007), Seal and Jung (2005), and Seal et al. (2012) have put the injection methodology into practice in Nevada and Colorado gold mines with a technology called Hydro-Jex®. The goal of Hydro-Jex has been to supply reagents at a high pressure over a short duration, followed by periodical low pressure rinse periods to remove leached metal and resupply fresh reagent to the ore."

Over the past 20 years, pressure die casting has evolved to a point where structural parts can now be produced by this process. This has been made possible by the development of vacuum die casting and by the development of die-castable, low iron content alloys. This resulted in the production of low porosity, weldable die-cast parts on which heat treatment may be applied. In the present paper, the influence porosities on the tensile properties of as-cast A360 tensile test bars was evaluated. This was done by casting 24 clusters, comprising three 6mm diameter test bars each, in a 280T cold chamber pressure die casting machine after a steady dynamic equilibrium had been reached. Modeling of filling allowed to explain the differences in porosity observed in the 3 samples of a same cluster while the results of solidification modeling were related to the microstructure. Tensile samples were radiographed on a real time X-cube apparatus and separated into 2 lots: samples where no porosity defect were visible and samples with visible defects. By measuring the tensile properties of the 2 lots it was possible to quantify the drop in tensile properties brought about by porosity, which is the most common defect observed in pressure die-cast parts.

"A reconnaissance geochemical survey, using the stream sediment technique, is described. The survey covered an area of about 400 square miles, in the Seal Lake area of central Labrador, underlain by basaltic flows, diabase and metadiabase sills, and sedimentary rocks. Previous work had indicated numerous small copper occurrences within the Seal Lake group of rocks. Stream sediments were tested for the readily extractable copper content and total heavy metal content. The results of the copper survey did not yield any new data on the distribution of copper mineralization. Results of the total heavy metal survey attracted attention to a remote portion of the area (Ten Mile Lake), which had hitherto been regarded as having no economic interest. The anomalous values found, suggested that zinc mineralization should occur in this region. Geological mapping indicated that the rocks exposed belonged to the Letitia Lake Group, which is older than the Seal Lake Group exposed to the east, which contains the copper mineralization of the district.Investigation of the area lead to the discovery of: (1) uneconomic lead-zinc mineralization; (2) radioactivity extending over a considerable area. Evaluation of the radioactive rocks led to the discovery of columbium-thorium mineralization in amphibolite and in diopside-actinolite schists along a contact with intrusive alkali syenite.Thus a geochemical survey, which was planned to evaluate a copper province, resulted in the discovery of lead-zinc-columbium-thorium mineralization."

Fangyuan Two-Step copper smelting process was commercialized in October, 2015 and has been operating for 3 years and 5 months. As the unique continuous copper smelting process with simplified flow in the world, production parameters have been significantly improved after three years. In the first half of 2018, the feed rate was above 200t/h, availability reached 97.5%, operation cost was about 20% lower than the conventional three-step processes showing obvious economic advantages. The Two-Step process in Fangyuan is composed of 1 Submerged Lance Smelting furnace (SLS) and 2 Submerged Lance Converting& Refining furnaces (SLCR). Two SLCRs work alternatively to ensure continuous production. High grade and liquid matte from the SLS is introduced to the SLCR by sealed launder to complete converting and refining. The SLCR is an original and independent innovation of Fangyuan, for which Fangyuan completed lots of development and improvement. This paper will introduce the process and experience. INTRODUCTION China is the largest producer and consumer of refined copper. Most of the processes adopted in China are conventional "Three-Step" copper smelting processes, which are comprised of smelting, converting and refining. There exists some problems in the conventional processes, such as high energy consumption, large heat loss, low altitude emission of SO2, etc. To deal with these problems, Fangyuan developed the new copper smelting process with simplified flow, low cost, clean and high efficiency. The SLCR that combines converting and the refining process was also developed, which shortens the process flow from conventional three steps to two steps. The SLCR is of great significance in promoting the development of the copper industry. Development and industrialization of SLCR At present, copper concentrates are treated in three steps: smelting, converting and refining. Anodes are also produced by continuous converting processes such as the Mitsubishi process and the Double Flash process. Problems like matte transportation by ladle, capacity limitation, and low altitude pollution exist.

"Recently, the remarkable strengthening effect of ??-Al(Mn, Fe) Si dispersoids at both ambient temperature and elevated temperature were found by several researches. A large amount of dispersoids can be formed by applying special heat treatments and within a suitable range of chemical composition of AA3xxx alloys. In the present work, the influences of Cr addition on the mechanical properties and microstructures of the Al-Mn-Mg-Si alloys were investigated. The mechanical properties at ambient and elevated temperatures were evaluated by micro-hardness and yield strength. Moreover, the microstructures in as-cast and heat-treated conditions were quantitatively analyzed by optical and electron microscopes. Results revealed that Cr also had effect on the number density and volume fraction of dispersoids. Micro-hardness and yield strength at ambient temperature increased with the increasing content of Cr, and the Cr addition increased the yield strength at elevated temperature as well. Moreover, the creep resistance at 300°C improved dramatically with the increasing content of Cr.INTRODUCTION Traditionally, AA3xxx aluminum alloys were widely used in packaging, automobile and architecture industries, because of its good formability, excellent corrosion resistance and weldability. And AA3xxx alloys were considered as non-heat-treatable alloys. However, the strengthening effect of dispersoids in AA3xxx alloys was discovered recently (Li & Arnberg, 2003;Li, Muggerud, Olsen, & Furu, 2012; Li, Zhang, & Chen, 2016; Liu & Chen, 2015).Alarge amount of dispersoids could precipitate by a proper heat treatment.In order to further improve AA3xxxalloys, the composition of the alloys should be optimized. A few previous studies were reported to investigate the influence of compositions on AA3xxx alloys. Adding Mn element could enhance the precipitation of ??-Al(Mn, Fe)Si dispersoids and improve the yield strength(Muggerud, Mørtsell, Li, & Holmestad, 2013), as long as the concentration of Mn was under the solid solution limit. Fe decreased the solubility of Mn and accelerated the precipitation rate of ??-Al(Mn, Fe)Sidispersoids(Li & Arnberg, 2003), the yield strength and creep resistance at elevated temperature could increase with an optimized content of Fe(Liu & Chen, 2016). Mg element would affect the nucleation process of ??-Al(Mn, Fe)Sidispersoids by forming metastable Mg2Si(Hirasawa, 1975; Li, Zhang, & Chen, 2017a; Lodgaard & Ryum, 2000), metastable Mg2Si precipitated during heating process and promoted the precipitation of ??-Al(Mn, Fe)Sidispersoids, moreover, Mg provided solid solution strength for AA3004 alloys(Li et al., 2016). Si increased the volume fractionof ??-Al(Mn, Fe)Sidispersoids(Muggerud et al., 2013)and decreased the size of ??-Al(Mn, Fe)Sidispersoids(Li, Zhang, & Chen, 2017b). With the addition of Mo, the size of dispersoids became finer with a higher volume fraction, the volume percentage of dispersoid free zones was reduced. Elevated temperature yield strength and creep resistance improved due to Mo addition (Liu, Ma, & Chen, 2017).However, the effect of Crelements on microstructure and mechanical properties of AA3xxx alloys were rarely reported."

The Ekati Safety Guarantee is a conversation that has been taking place at Ekati for the last two years. It is a challenging, confronting, inspiring conversation which encourages people to see and pursue the possibility of guaranteeing that nobody who works at Ekati will be seriously injured or killed at work. The conversation takes us out of the normal, incremental approach to safety improvement; it takes us out of the world of striving, of seeking, of trying, and allows us to stand in, and be a stand for the future possibility of Zero Harm. It requires an unreasonable stand for, and commitment to, our own safety and the safety of our colleagues. A Powerful Conversation The safety guarantee began with conversations between executive team members and has been propagated regularly through the line through management meetings, pre-shift meetings, during workplace inspections, job safety observations, job and project planning, orientation and induction sessions, and when opportunities present themselves. This is a conversation that continues outside of Ekati with family, with government, with community members. It is a stand for safety as a value. The conversation about the safety guarantee is now pervasive at Ekati and forms part of a framework of initiatives that have led to sustained improvement in safety performance. During the last two years, the recordable injury frequency at Ekati has dropped to its lowest level in Ekati?s history. At the same time, job safety observations have increased from 500 per month to 4000 per month, whilst the overall number of people at Ekati has reduced by 30%. It has led to new ways of thinking about the conduct of operations. It influenced the 2008 upgrade of the Ekati process plant, resulting in the development and implementation of a crane lift protocol that eliminated injuries during over 100 lifts in two weeks, in an area of difficult geometry and with multiple entrances. It created space to successfully conduct a challenging commissioning period for the process plant crusher, during which time the machine was disassembled and reassembled several times, without incident or injury. No production pressure was permitted to interfere with this work, in line with our stated aim that we wanted everyone involved to guarantee that they would not be seriously injured or killed?our people had the space to do the work at a pace, and in a way, that guaranteed this outcome.

"Cyclone separators of different design are being used in increasing numbers in the coal industry of today. One recent addition, the Compound Water Cyclone, is finding application in the North American and Australian coal fields for the beneficiation of coking coals and for the reduction of sulphur and ash in steam coals. In this paper, the combination of specific-gravity separation, thickening, classification and water recovery are discussed. All of these operations can now be accomplished by means of cyclones that are effectively combined in circuits of compact design. In the layout of such integrated plants, three main sections are distinguished, namely: a Main Section for cleaning the plus-28-mesh fractions; an Effluent-Beneficiation Section for treating the minus-28-mesh fractions; and a Water-Recovery Section, where the wash water is reconditioned, and the fine solids are removed in a semi-solid state as slugs or pellets. Depending on the nature of the coal and the specifications of the purchaser, water-cyclone circuits can be flexibly combined with HM Cyclones and froth flotation, as well as with ancillary equipment for dewatering and drying."

Concentration of sodium sulphate occurs in undrained basins under semi-arid conditions. Precipitation runoff from land adjacen1 to 1hese basins leaches 1he mineral from the soils and carries it in solu1ion 10 the basins. The process may be largely subsurface, wherein spring seeps feed basins associated with buried (preg/acial) river valleys. A wheel loader is one of the main loading machines in open pit mines. The authors have been conducting research and development on autonomous operation of loading by a wheel loader. The most common loading method by a wheel loader is the ?V shape? path method. The loading operation consists of cycles of scooping from the pile, traveling to the dump truck, loading on the dump truck and return traveling to the scooping point for the next cycle. The traveling path includes a switchback in the middle of the path. The moving direction of the loader is changed at the switchback point. From observation of V shape path loading operations by experienced human operators, it seems that they control the bucket position between the scooping point and loading point on a shorter path for higher productivity. A new path planning method is proposed this paper, whereby a point on the center of the tip of the bucket is controlled moving from the initial point and the final point. The motion of the controlled point is generated by the wheel steering the wheel loader. The controlled point is moved along the direction to the final point; however, the motion and mechanism of wheel loader have restrictions, such as the velocity of the loader, the steering angle, and the steering angular velocity. Because of these restrictions, the path of the controlled point is not a straight line between the initial and final points. When this control method is applied between the scooping and the dumping points directly, the planned path is not stable in the leaving wing of V shape path. Therefore, the initial position of the wheel loader is set at the switchback point, then two approach wings to the scooping and the dumping points are made. The whole planned path is obtained by connecting the two paths. The shape of the planned path is strongly affected by the position of the switchback point, as well as the scooping and the dumping points. By simulation of path planning at different switchback points with the combination of the scooping and the dumping points, the paths for more effective loading are determined. The results of the simulation are presented in the paper.

"The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the convergence measurements in a drift excavated in the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone. The drift axis is in the direction of the major principal horizontal stress whereas the stress state is quasi-isotropic in the drift’s section. The initial geometry of the drift being circular, the anisotropic character of the deformation is taken into account by assuming that the drift shape evolves in an elliptical shape. The convergence measurement data on six different points around the drift are analyzed to identify the main axes of the deformation ellipse, following the methodology proposed by Vu et al. (2013, Rock Mech Rock Eng, 46, 231-246). Then, using the semi-empirical law proposed by Sulem et al. (1987, Int J Rock Mech Min Sci, 24, 145–154), the convergence evolution is fitted independently for each axis of the ellipse. This method permits to distinguish two effects: the face advance effect and the time-dependent behavior of the ground. The results for the two directions of the ellipse axes show very close values for the parameters describing the time-dependent properties of the ground, the distance of influence of the face, and the extension of the decompressed zone around the gallery. Such model can provide valuable insights for predictions of the convergence evolution in the long-term. INTRODUCTIONDeep disposal of radioactive waste has been studied in France for more than two decades. The French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency (Andra) began in 2000 the construction of an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) with the main goal of demonstrating the feasibility of a geological repository in Callovo-Oxfordian claystone. Several research programs have taken place to improve the knowledge of the rock properties and its response to the excavation progress. The optimization of supports design for long-term behavior is an important point to develop. A network of experimental drifts has been constructed with variations on: excavation method, structure geometry, supports system and orientations with respect to in-situ principal stresses’ directions. In each drift different sections have been instrumented to monitor the convergence evolution and the rock deformation. Continuous monitoring of the excavated zone around the drifts revealed the development of a fractured zone (extensional and shear fractures) induced by the excavation. The extent of this fractured zone depends on both the drift orientation and the in-situ stress field (Armand et al., 2014). Indeed, the fractures distribution has an important influence on the convergence of the drifts."

"The purification of rare earth elements (REE) at mining operations is traditionally accomplished by multiple chemical phase-transfer processes including precipitation, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. We describe REE purification results with Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) columns that were developed to improve the speed and economy of REE purification. The SPE columns have the properties of enhanced equilibration kinetics, so that residence time of a few seconds will accomplish selective chemical transfers from solution phase to solid phase. We describe the separation of REE’s as a class from leach solutions and the further purification of REE salts. INTRODUCTIONHistorically the rare earths were first chemically separated from each other and purified by fractional crystallization. This slow, cumbersome, and laborious process was not suited to commercial production. Solvent Exchange (SX) technology was applied to the problem of separating and purifying the rare earth elements when it was determined in the late 1960s that there might be commercial uses for them individually. At the same time the very slow and expensive technique of ion exchange was applied either for ultra-purification of the desired “light” rare earths, or for the recovery and purification of the tiny amounts of higher atomic numbered, “heavy,” rare earths. Solvent Exchange (SX) has today become the standard for separating the rare earths across their atomic number spectrum. Whereas the separation of the light rare earths commercially may take 30 “cascades’ in a modern Chinese plant, the total separation of all of them from each other may take up to 80 such “cascades,” and is only even “practical’ with preconcentrated feed stocks, such as those produced in China by heap-leaching techniques performed in situ on very low grade radio-nuclide free ionic absorption clays.. Ultra-pure materials of all types are produced today by ion-exchange processing of ionic species already separated by solvent exchange.Hard rock deposits and refractory residues of tin mining and residues from uranium mining have been identified outside of China with very high ratios of dysprosium and other heavy rare earths to the majority lighter ones. Research, whether applied or fundamental, is a human endeavour which increases our understanding of nature. It is insufficient to simply observe, explore, record and classify. It i necessary, as well, to fit the observations into a satisfying theoretical scheme; that is, to synthesize. Two examples of successful research programs in physical metallurgy are di cussed from this point of view. A pessimistic view is taken of the prospects for rapid growth of research activities in the Canadian metallurgical industry. THE term "research" is used indiscriminately to describe any intellectual or experimental activity which leads to a change in society. Proponents of various activities, ex-tending all the way from alloy development to subliminal advertising, use the status of the term for special advantage. With the Canadian Government entering upon a project of support to industrial research, it might be well to determine what definition is most in the public interest. As an academic, I have a rather jealous attachment to the definition that research, whether applied or fundamental, is a human endeavour which increases our understanding of nature.

Abstract - The Nanisivik mine offers a unique opportunity to examine the economics of a mining scenario from its original feasibility study through to closure. In the early 1970s, the Strathcona Sound project (exploration around the Nanisivik mine) had advanced to the point where a significant mineralized body had been defined and a feasibility study was initiated. The study supported development of the Nanisivik mine, with government investment in regional infrastructure, and the mine was constructed and operated for 26 years. Many elements of the feasibility study were difficult to estimate because the project was unique in its high Arctic setting. As a result, many differences were found when comparing the actual mining data to the feasibility study. The majority of these differences were the result of an actual mine life of 26 years instead of the planned 12.5 years. Most of the mining costs were higher than estimated and production occurred at a much higher extraction rate than planned. On a constant dollar basis, the metal prices were, on average, below the feasibility estimates. For the most part, these differences balanced out, with the actual mining being only slightly more profitable than anticipated in the feasibility study.

To properly understand industrial conditions in Spain it is necessary to consider the early history of the country. Spain is very backward in many lines. They use the sickle for cutting grain, and plows for cultivating the land, which resemble those of Biblical days. In the great mining camp at Bilbao only one steam-shovel is in use, although about two hundred million tons of ore has been produced, and this almost entirely from open cuts. It is the lack of industrial development, such as is found in many other countries, which permits large mining enterprises to be controlled almost entirely by foreign capital, although Spain is such an old country, and which permits mines opened in the days of the Phoenicians to still operate. Such deposits in America would be exhausted in a comparatively few years. The Phoenicians are supposed to have reached Spain about 1100 B.C. and to have worked some of the properties in the Rio Tinto district. The Carthagenians invaded the country about 236 B.C., and they were driven out about 205 B.C. by the Romans. The Romans ruled until 483 A.D., when they were overthrown by the Visigoths. Then, about 711 A.D., the Moors from Africa became prominent and they were finally expelled by the Spaniards in 1492. Spanish power reached its zenith under Phillip II, during the latter half of the 16th century, and since the close of that century the country has lost its prominent place among the nations. There are some evidences of revival in the development of good roads, the construction of a satisfactory network of railways, and the building of magnificent thoroughfares through the capital city, Madrid.

This paper presents a three-tier web-based GIS application that uses Java Server Page (JSP), Java Servlet and relational database to manage performance monitoring and reporting in the oil sands mining industry. It is a real-time Earth Structure Performance Monitoring System (ESPMS), which allows the user to record and store instrumentation monitoring readings as well as technical observations and instrumentation installation documentations into a complete relational database. The ESPMS introduces the advantages of precise field record keeping, due diligence, security, consistency and completeness while at the same time simplifying the task of reporting. ESPMS combines web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping and data management to facilitate the collection, organization, retrieval, reporting and communication of the vast amounts of monitoring data related to mining and tailings engineering associated with site investigation and construction information. ESPMS utilizes web-based GIS technology to incorporate referenced aerial photographs, Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) maps or AutoCAD drawings as a base map for the monitoring site. It dynamically creates and administers all instrumentation monitoring locations and reading frequencies. It enables the user to collect and manage the data associated with an unlimited number of reading events. It provides the designer with real-time monitoring data (what, why, when, how), thereby allowing them to make early adjustments to design protocols or procedures, or to take remedial action(s) regarding the subject earth structure under construction or after completion. It provides more cost-effective reporting and data sharing through the Internet. It improves security on data entry and eliminates unauthorized data changes. It allows better integration of graphics and illustrations with numerical data files. It is capable of managing the continually expanding workload resulting from new and larger structures in the oil sands or other mineral mining industries. The ESPMS facilitates easier data gathering for preparation of as-built and after-built or regulatory reports, etc. It enables quick location of the interested instruments and summarization of the performance of the instruments. It enables one to visualize performance data and QA/QC construction test results spatially on any given cross-section. Data can be exported to MS Excel for detailed analysis and to evaluate the stability of the earth structures.

INVESTIGATIONS to date have shown that, should there be the need or the appropriate economic stimulus, Canada's mineral resources are sufficiently extensive to allow considerable expansion of its non-fuel mineral industry, during the remaining part of this century and possibly beyond (1, 2). The availability of sufficient capital will be one of the critical factors which will determine whether this potential will be fulfilled. The following analysis centers on the capital requirements of the Canadian non-fuel mineral industry under one set of basic assumptions of capacity growth, cost of new and replacement capacity, rates of depletion and depreciation of mines and plant, and the cost of exploration and infrastructure. Mindful of the fact that exploration and development will not thrive in Canada unless a very positive approach is taken, the writers make no apologies for being "optimistic" about long-term production prospects. Furthermore, in the event that world demand does escalate as anticipated and the forecast realistically attainable levels of Canadian production are not reached, then Canada will not have reaped the full range of economic benefits available, and opportunities will have been lost. Projections for Canadian production between 1976 and 2000 are essentially based on the forecast published in the 1974 paper, "Towards a Mineral Policy for Canada - Opportunities for Choice (3), with some updating on the basis of recent developments.

"Metallurgical slag (MS) such as steel slag, copper slag is a renewable resource and its compressive strength exceeds 200MPa in general. Because pure metal slug can easily be mixed into MS, complex recycle system is necessary in order to realize MS’s recycling. Meanwhile, there is high equipment failure rate in conventional crushing system. New crushing systems with inertial cone crusher could solve this problem very well. Recovery rate of MS tailings requires that crushing product can’t contain too much oversize product, so the essential equipment include two crushers and one sieve in the traditional crushing system. The new crushing system which only includes two crushers can meet the requirement and simplify the crush process. Investment of crushing equipment and infrastructure can be cut down. Operating and maintenance costs can be obviously reduced due to the simple process, which also could achieve high energy saving and excellent economic efficiency.INTRODUCTIONMetallurgical Slag (MS) such as steel slag, copper slag is a typical industrial solid waste and it threatens our environment’s safe. Because pure metal slug can easily be mixed into MS, its uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) will exceed 200Mpa. If crushing station employs traditional crushing equipment, equipment failure will be easily caused because of these pure metal slugs. Coarse crushing equipment usually adapts jaw crusher in traditional Crushing technology and rod mill will be utilized to finish the secondary and fine crushing works. And the same time screening machinery should be used to ensure the suitable particle size (Figure 1)."
