Micromixing of the fluid and the particulate phases in a continuous gibbsite precipitator was investigated for three different micromixing states, namely maximum mixedness (MM), complete segregation (CS), and maximum mixedness of the fluid but complete segregation of the particulates (MMF-CSP). The influence of the micromixing on continuous precipitation of gibbsite was studied at different precipitation conditions via simulation. Three different cases were considered with respect to the precipitation kinetics: (1) gibbsite secondary nucleation is favoured with slow crystal growth and agglomeration rates; (2) gibbsite crystal agglomeration and growth are dominant mechanisms with secondary nucleation suppressed; and (3) gibbsite crystal growth is the only relevant phenomenon. Simulation results for the cases (1) and (3) showed that the crystalline products for both the MM and MMF-CSP micromixing states were very similar, but the product obtained from the CS micromixing state was considerably different. This indicates that at those precipitation conditions the fluid micomixing has the dominant effect on the product properties, and the particulates micromixing effect is insignificant. However, when operated under the conditions of fast crystal growth and agglomeration kinetics, i.e. case (2), both the fluid and the particulates micromixing were found to affect the precipitation process, resulting in a significantly different product. Large seismic events have been reported in mines in the Sudbury mining camp for more than 70 years. Nevertheless, no detailed record of the events has been compiled. In 2008, the Sudbury Regional Seismic Network (SRSN) research project was initiated to collect more accurate data with regard to the magnitude and locations of mining-induced seismic events in and near the mines in the Sudbury Basin. The data is used to better understand the mechanisms of the events and cause-effect relations between mining and seismic events. Through the collection of a central database of large seismic events, new insight is being be gained into why some mines are much more prone to large events than others. Fifteen low cost seismic stations have been distributed throughout the Sudbury basin. The data from each seismic station is uploaded to a central server using the internet. Data recorded on the SRSN is processed on a daily basis, and a weekly summary of blasts and events is issued to project sponsors. Seismic events smaller than local magnitude +1.0 have been identified and located. Event location accuracy is less than 2 kilometres, however, many events have been located less than 1 km from a mine. The SRSN fills a seismic monitoring gap between the in-mine microseismic monitoring systems and the earthquake monitoring system operated by the Geological Survey of Canada. Since July 2008, more than 600 mine blasts and more than 450 mining-induced seismic events have been recorded in the Sudbury basin. This paper primarily discusses the technical aspects of the design and operation of the SRSN. The SRSN is a Canadian Mining Industry Research Organisation (CAMIRO) research project, with industry sponsorship and support from FNX Mining, Itasca Canada, Vale Inco and Xstrata Nickel.

"Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texasgulf, Inc., Operates the Kidd Creek Mine, Concentrator and Zinc Plant at Timmins, Ontario. Two different ore types are mined and milled to produce concentrates of copper, zinc, lead and tin. The ores are processed at the Concentrator in three separate individual milling circuits, each with the capacity to treat up to 3500 tons per day. Two circuits treat copper-zinc ore 1t an average combined rate of 6500 tons per day and the third circuit treats 3500 tons per day of silver-lead zinc ore. Conventional crushing, grinding and flotation procedures are followed. The purpose of this paper is to describe Ecstall's experience with rubber mill linings in the grinding circuits.CrushingBoth ores are crushed to minus 6 inches at the Mine and delivered by rail to the Concentrator where they are reduced by secondary and tertiary crushing to minus 5/8 inch.GrindingThe crushed ores are prepared for selective flotation by grinding with rod mills and two stages of ball milling. flotation circuit middling products are reground in regrind mills prior to further treatment. A typical flowsheet of one of the grinding circuits is shown in Figure 1.All the grinding units are Allis-Chalmers Mills. The rod mills are 10 1/2 feet diameter by 16 feet long. Both the primary and secondary ball mills are 12 feet diameter by 18 feet long and all regrind mills are 6 feet diameter by 12 feet long. The primary mills are charged with 1 13/16 inch forged balls. Secondary mills are charged with 1 1/2 inch forged balls and the regrind mills are charged with 1 inch forged balls. All cyclones are Kreb units. The primary cyclones are Dl5B hydrocyclones, the secondary cyclones are D6B hydrocyclones and all regrind cyclones are D6B hydrocyclones."

Masses of pyritic copper and zinc ores are entrapped along the contact zone between two volcanic groups in the Matagami area. The upper limits of the sulphide concentrations tend to form concordant contacts against lava or cherty tuffite units of the younger group; the lower extremities tend to either follow transverse structures or merge with zones of dispersed sulphides. The sulphides are deformed and intruded by folded dykes. Close relations between metallization boundaries and volcanic lithology and stratigraphy, and a preliminary investigation of the fabrics and crystallization temperatures of the sulphide masses, suggest that the copper and zinc (but; not necessarily all the iron sulphides) were emplaced at h1gh temperatures during volcanism in near-surface lithological-stratigraphic traps. Introduction T HE Matagami area is centered 120 miles north of the Val d'Or and Noranda camps in north-western Quebec. For the present purpose, it is considered to comprise a 155-square-mile area in Isle-Dieu, Galinee and Daniel townships which encompasses the main sulphide masses. "Bubble size plays a key role in flotation. In this paper, we examine the possibility of using passive acoustic sending to determine bubble size. Software was developed based on Short Time Fourier Transformation (STFT) to analyze the frequency of the acoustic signal emitted from the bubble formation event. Bubble size was determined from the Minnaert frequency. The acoustic-determined bubble size responded to reagent dosage, but was less sensitive than that given by imaging. The constraints of the current acoustic approach are discussed.INTRODUCTIONBubble size is an important factor affecting flotation performance. It determines the maximum available surface area for collecting and transporting mineral particles. Of interest for process control (Gorain, Franzidis, & Manlapig, 1995), it can be determined by several techniques, such as image analysis (Grau & Heiskanen, 2002; Hernandez-Aguilar, Gomez, & Finch, 2002); conductivity (Barigou & Greaves, 1992); drift flux analysis using gas rate and gas holdup measurements (Banisi & Finch, 1994); and optical sensors (Randall, Goodall, Fairlamb, Dold, & Connor, 1989). It is a general expectancy that in most of the construction and renovation project, the contractor is going to hand over the as-built documents to the owner or the facility management team at the completion of the project. The main challenge for the handover process is to ensure the completeness of the captured building information and the accuracy of it in terms of how well it represents the reality. Building information models (BIMs) can be used as an information repository to store and deliver as-built information. However, due to changes made in the construction and renovation phases and errors made in the design and modeling phases, discrepancies can exist between BIMs created in the design phase (asdesigned BIMs) and actual building conditions. Laser scanning technology is able to efficiently capture accurate geometric information, which provides an opportunity to identify and quantify discrepancies and update as-designed BIMs into as-built BIMs. This paper presents a case study, within which the asdesigned BIM of a newly renovated research lab was updated into an as-built BIM using laser scanned data captured in the renovation phase. This paper introduces the challenges associated with the updating process for the as-designed BIM. In order to address these challenges, this paper introduces a framework that supports the update of an as-designed BIM by incorporating point clouds captured by the progressive laser scans.

Underground mining of minerals is becoming an increasingly complicated technological and ecological problem. It can be explained both by worsening of geological conditions of mining and by a specific character of mining industry, which, in contrast to processing branches of industry, intrudes into one of principal components of the nature ? the Earth's interior. At a traditional organization of mining industry, the entire volume of the produced rock mass is brought to the Earth's surface, where valuable components are extracted. This entails not only power over expenditure for long-distance transfer (especially in the vertical direction) of the waste rock forming a part of the original mineral, but also the formation of huge volumes of worked-out spaces. The latter leads (nature cannot stand emptiness!) to an irreversible development of geomechanical processes of shifting of overlying rock masses resulting in an irreparable damage of all surface structures located on the territory undermined by deep mining. Owing to their high productivity combined with low power consumption and instrumental compactness, novel bifunctional technological processes of minerals dressing successfully solve the problem of rock mass processing in underground conditions with subsequent operative disposal of final tailings of such underground dressing in the worked-out space. Besides, an integration of two processes into one is achieved, for example, a decrease in the rock mass coarseness with a simultaneous precise separation of valuable and waste components.

S. were visited, Methods applicable to the N. B. Project were noted for future use.We have both surface and underground mining operations in New Brunswick, Both deface the natural landscape and reclamation varies in difficulty, Surface operation disturbances are the most difficult to correct.Some of the surface mining is carried out next to two main highways and the results are definite eyesores, With this in mind, it was decided to landscape the spoil ground next to the highways and plant “as is"" the ground remote from the public view.The landscaping entailed various degrees of bulldozing from complete levelling to contouring, smoothing and topping, Bulldozing is, of course, the most expensive part of any reclamation project.There are two phases to the planting program; experimental and operational--experimental both prior and, later, in conjunction with the operational planting.Initially in the experimental project, the pH and composition of the spoil was determined using a grid sampling system. Soil samples were tested in a laboratory at the University of New Brunswick."

Titanium aluminides recently replaced Ni-based superalloys as turbine blades in the last LP stage of aircraft engines. To extend their range of use at higher temperature their properties need to be improved, either by alloying or processing. An efficient solution is to reduce the grain size during the solidification process. In the first part of the paper, an overview is given on the possibilities for grain refinement of such alloys, based on literature data and new results. The most efficient grain refinement is obtained with boron addition which leads to boride formations that are detrimental for in-use properties of turbine blades. In this work, the use of the high grain refinement potency of inoculation with non-brittle particles has been used by developing new refractory-based inoculants. The effect of one of these inoculants on grain refinement of an as-cast structure in a Ti-46Al is presented; resulting in a reduction of the grain size by a factor of 3.While less efficient compared to the potency of boron containing alloys, the grain refinement is effective and does not introduce any embrittling particles.

Successful businesses see process control as an integrated engineered system, designed and built into their business models from day one. ? The integration and use of process control sets the stage for years of compounded returns. ? Has been used for years to optimizing recoveries and minimizing waste. ? However, the mining/ore extraction sector has been slow to adopt integrated process control. What is the problem? ? Most executives and engineers do not clearly understand process control when applied to mining/extraction activities. ? Common approach has been to apply generic process control strategies as a blanket cure all and wait for it to pay off. ? No central focus which results in multiple group involvement, overlap and inconsistent application of questionable technology. ? Considered a low priority until production activities commence. ? Comfort in using brute force mining methods. ? An off-the-shelf integrated under ground mining process control architecture has not until recently been available.

"High deposition rate Wire and Arc Additive Manufacture (WAAM) can provide benefits to the aerospace industry, including a reduction in lead time, reduced material waste and, through higher solidification rates, refinement of the as-built microstructure relative to a cast material. However, candidate 2xxx series high strength alloys for this process normally require a solution treatment, which is problematic for large near-net-shape components, and age hardening to achieve maximum mechanical properties. With each layer being subject to multiple thermal cycles, exploiting the thermal conditions in the WAAM process to avoid post-build solution treatment is therefore of interest. A solutionisation model has been developed for the WAAM process, based on diffusion controlled dissolution using DICTRA, which was validated through thermal simulations combined with 2D and 3D image analysis. The model has subsequently been used to simulate the solutionisation behavior during a typical WAAM thermal cycle and to explore what could theoretically be achieved by, for example, refining the starting microstructure.INTRODUCTION There is currently great interest in exploiting additive manufacturing (AM) in the aerospace sector due to several benefits it can potentially provide; including reduced material waste, shorter product lead times and greater design freedom (Herzog, Seyda, Wycisk, & Emmelmann, 2016). However, with aluminium alloys the material properties obtained are generally inferior to those of conventional high-strength wrought products; therefore more research is required to explore the potential for exploiting the unique process conditions in AM to improve the as-deposited microstructure. A range of AM techniques are now available (Debroy et al., 2018), which differ in terms of the feedstock type and power source and it is necessary to match the appropriate technology to a particular application. This generally requires a compromise between the build rate and shape resolution. Wire and plasma-arc additive manufacturing involves using an electric arc to melt wire onto a substrate, and fabricates a part by building up overlapping layers of deposited weld beads (Addison et al., 2015; Williams et al., 2015). The benefits of this process over other AM methods are the much higher deposition rates (e.g. kg’s/hour) achievable and lower capital equipment costs relative to powder bed techniques, which makes it suitable for large scale applications. However, limitations include a lower part complexity, lower solidification rates and a greater need for post-process machining (Frazier, 2014)."

Characterization of dust from Boliden Mineral AB’s copper-plant in Sweden was carried out using chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, energy dispersive analysis and wave length analysis using electron microprobe equipment. Dust from four different locations was characterized: the electrostatic precipitator (ESP) after the roasting furnace; the ESP after the copper smelting furnace; from the copper converter ventilation bag house filter; and from the bag house filter collecting dust from the settling furnace and tap gas ventilation. The results showed that the dust is composed of small solid and/or liquid particles from the furnace reactor which have been transported with the process gas to the dust collecting devices. This portion of the dust is mechanically formed. It also contains compounds that have been vaporized in the process and then condensed from the process gas at lower temperature, chemically formed dust. The proportion of mechanical and chemical dust varies with the process generating the dust.

"A test to determine the amount of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given; possible uses are discussed. A case study of how the technology was used at Hemlo Gold Mines is presented.IntroductionUsing gravity to supplement either flotation or cyanidation is a well established practice in the gold industry. It differs from most recovery circuits in that most of the gold recovered by gravity would be recovered in any case by the circuit downstream, be it flotation or cyanidation. The economic justification of gravity is therefore based on small margins (for example. a net smelter return of gravity gold of 99%, as opposed to 94% by flotation). It was easily demonstrated when either flotation or cyanidation were relatively inefficient processes, and labour costs low (as gravity can be labour intensive). Over the past thirty years, the advent of better flotation machines (flash, column, high capacity), more effective collectors, and better control systems has increased flotation's metallurgical performance, thereby decreasing the incentive for gravity recovery. Cyanidation technology has undergone similar changes, with the advent of activated carbon, oxygen and lead nitrate addition, and improved impeller design.Today, gravity could remain an attractive option only inasmuch as it can be implemented with very low capital and operating costs. This has resulted in a relative shift away from gold gravity recovery (except for alluvial deposits), in the seventies and eighties. For example, as of the early nineties, gold gravity recovery has disappeared from the typical South African flow sheet. The advent of the Knelson Concentrator, at the beginning of the eighties, foreshadowed a resurgence of gravity recovery, as gold's grinding and classification behaviour (Banisi, Laplante and Marois, 1991) makes it possible to achieve adequate gold recoveries with very simple, Knelson based, gravity circuits (Laplante et al., 1994).Consider for example the Hemlo recovery circuit, made of a single 61 cm x 122 cm (2' x 4') screen, an automated 76 cm (30"") Knelson feeding a Gemeni table, to produce a 70-80% Au concentrate which accounts for approximately one fourth of the gold production (about 3 million grams per year). The low capital and operating costs make it possible to justify the gravity circuit on the basis of savings in other operating costs (e.g. fewer carbon stripping and reactivation cycles). Any improvements in recovery, which would at Hemlo be difficult to measure, would be additional benefits. Such a circuit is rapidly becoming a standard in Canadian and Australian operations.The justification for installing a gravity circuit must be first based on an estimate of how much gold it will recover (irrespective of what the potential benefits are). This is a function of the nature of the gravity circuit to be installed; however, Knelson circuits, by their very simplicity and efficiency, limit the options. This leaves the amenability of the ore to gravity recovery as the single most important parameter. Various approaches can be used to characterize this response (Woodcock, 1993). External-detonation-generated plasmas, highly ionized zones of reacting material ejected from the surface of detonating explosive charges, are shown to be the cause of channel desensitization, i.e., the self-quenching of a detonating explosive column loaded in a borehole with an air annulus between the explosive and the borehole wall. The effects of this phenomenon on several explosive compositions and types are demonstrated and discussed. The explosives tested include aluminum-sensitized and explosive-sensitized slurries, ANFO, liquid explosives and dynamites. Various techniques are described that can be used to reduce or eliminate the plasma effect.

"The distribution of gold in the grinding-classification circuit of an operating gold plant was determined by assaying the size fractions of samples from each of the streams. This analysis identified the streams with the maximum potential for gravity recovery of gold and revealed that there was up 110 seventy-five times as much gold in the primary cyclone underflow as in the concentrator feed.Laboratory jigging and tabling tests were done on samples from two of the streams to determine what the recovery might be with a gravity circuit and to show that a high grade concentrate could be produced. A numerical simulation procedure was used to calculate a material balance for a circuit that included gravity separation on the primary cyclone underflow. The numerical simulation optimistically indicated that as much as 84% of the gold might be recovered in a reasonable grade of concentrate even though the recovery in batch bench scale tests was only 14%.Incorporation of a gravity separation device would reduce the inventory of gold in the grinding-classification circuit.INTRODUCTIONMany gold concentrating plants include a gravity concentration operation while others do not and the reasons that some do and some do not is not clear. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of gravity circuits are discussed by Penman (Penman 1987) without clear cut resolution. Penman's comments elicited an interesting response from Lloyd (1989) who produced a simple way to determine if the addition of a gravity concentration circuit would enhance the recovery of gold. Lloyd's method does not consider the cost of running the circuit so it only partially answers the question. There are reports in the literature (Wells and Patel 1991, Matwijenko 1988) that as much as 60% of the entire production comes from a gravity circuit when it is used, and that the grade of the concentrate produced often exceeds 65% gold, an assay that far exceeds most Merrill-Crowe precipitates that are sent to refining. In at least one instance (Hood 1984) a range of recovery from 40-50% was indicated from laboratory test work and the plant subsequently realized recoveries in the range of 26-40%. Despite these favorable numbers other plants use gravity separation when as little as 20% of the gold is recovered in the gravity concentrate (Carter 1992)."

The volcanic-dominated Tetagouche Group in northern New Brunswick contains numerous massive-sulfide deposits and intimately associated metalliferous sediments. The massive sulfides are generally hosted by Llanvirnian-Llandeilian volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks of the Nepisiguit Falls, Patrick Brook, and Boucher Brook formations. These formations are intercalated or closely associated with rhyolitic-dacitic flows and/or domes, and minor continental tholeiites of the Flat Landing Brook Formation. Pyroclastic rocks are relatively scarce in the silicic volcanic complex. Tuffites and epiclastic sandstones, of the Nepisiguit Falls and Patrick Brook formations, respectively, generally occur along the fringes of the silicic volcanic complex. The flows and tuffites are intruded by quartz- and feldspar-phyric rhyolite (porphyry) dykes, sills, and domes. Although the volume of the silicic volcanic complex is large, evidence for a previously proposed collapsed-caldera model is lacking. On the basis of host-rock type and stratigraphic position, the sediment-hosted massive sulfides have been divided into three groups: the Brunswick-, Caribou- and Halfmile Lake-type deposits. Syngenetic feeder pipes and asociated alteration zones are generally not present beneath the Caribou- and the Halfmile Lake-type deposits and, if present at all, are poorly developed underneath the Brunswick-type.

"Titanium oxide films were fabricated on commercially pure titanium surfaces via anodization procedure. Anodization parameters, anodization time and voltage were altered, whereas temperature and chemical composition of anodization bath were kept constant. The main idea in this study is to obtain rough titanium-oxide surfaces. The type and feature of titanium oxide formed were observed via SEM and EDX analyses. What was revealed from SEM and EDX analyses were combined with Ti-O phase diagram in order to make judgment on the type of phases obtained, e.g. solid solution and/or compounds. Studies on the different regions of each sample showed that surfaces consist of different titanium oxide compounds with various O/Ti ratios in nano level and solid solutions varying in terms of chemistry on the same sample. Thus together rough surfaces and inhomogeneous distribution of "titanium oxides" were obtained. It was also found that when anodization time and voltage were increased, more granular surface with higher O/Ti atomic ratio was obtained."
