The present work describes a study of the separation of terbium and dysprosium from heavy RE concentrate through a solvent extraction circuit in a counter-current system. As the efficiency of the REE extraction by acid extractants rises with the increase of the atomic number of the element, the aim of this work is to extract the elements with higher atomic number maintaining Tb and Dy in the aqueous phase. Thus, terbium was separated first with subsequent separation of dysprosium. The experiments were carried out by using IONQUEST®801 as the extractant and a REE-hydrochloric liquor as feed solution. The optimum operational circuit in terbium separation was comprised of 37 stages: extraction, scrubbing, stripping, and solvent washing. For the dysprosium separation 39 stages were required. Terbium separation over 92% with over 95% purity and a Dy separation over 97% with over 95% purity were obtained.

Introduction Throughout the Great Plains region (the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta), numerous clay deposits of widely varying composition and character are to be found. These may be classified into two general types: (1) surface clays, and (2) shales. The surface clays consist of a heterogeneous mantle of silts and clays interspersed with grave! and sand deposits, and may belong to any of the following groups: (1) lake clays: (2) river-terrace or flood-plain deposits; (3) delta deposits . In most cases, the water from which these deposits were ' laid down was derived from the melting ice of the continental glaciers. These surface clays, in general, possess certain characteristics in common, being all more or less calcareous, often silty, and showing a tendency to 'check' in air-drying. The shales found in this region are of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. These deposits have a wide extent, but there is frequently such a heavy covering of drift material that the clays are accessible chiefly along the walls of stream valleys, or along the escarpments of uplands.

"Hydraulic transport of solids has long been an important technique in mining and beneficiation. More recently, slurry pipelines have proved to be economic for longdistance overland transport of many commoditieis, including iron ore concentrates and coal. Now, the Marconaflo system brings the many advantages of hydraulic transport to bulk storage, loading, transportation and unloading of ships and other carrying equipment, thus providing important new means for delivering mineral commodities to market. In this paper, the authors describe the Marconaflo system and the potential economies which can be realized when applying it for loading, transporting, storing, reclaiming and blending a variety of mineral commodities, using several commercial installations as examples."

ABSTRACT: The Victor diamond mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario. The process plant was designed to produce a 95 to 98% by weight diamond concentrate through three stages of comminution, dense medium separation, and proprietary X-ray technology for final recovery. The plant was commissioned over a period of six months, commencing prior to substantial completion of construction. Through effective planning of the commissioning phase, the Victor mine start-up was safely completed nine months ahead of schedule.

"The property owned by Senator-Rouyn Mines, Limited, is in Rouyn township about 17'2 miles southwest of the town of Rouyn. It adjoins the Chadbourne claims of Noranda Mines, Limited, on the south and the Bagamac property on the ·west. It includes seven claims-block 44, blocks 80 to 83 and blocks 96 and 97; the mine is wholly in blocks 44 and 82.Late in 1936 gold was discovered in an outcrop of rusty weathering carbonate rock near the north end of block 44, and the following year the present Company was organized to proceed with the development of the property. During 1937-38, 17,000 feet of diamond drill core were bored to determine the extent of the ore deposit at depth. From October 15th, 1940, to April 15th, 1941, the ore was hauled to the mill at the Arntfield mine for treatment. The mill on the Senator-Rouyn property started on April 25th, 1941, and has been in practically continuous operation since than time. To the end of 1946, 574,874 tons of ore, from which gold having a value of $3,836,450 was recovered, were treated in the mill.GEOLOGYThe rocks exposed at the Senator-Rouyn mine, except in the southern part of the property, are almost wholly quartz diorite, part of an irregular mass that extends west from the town of Rouyn along the north shore of Noranda lake and thence southwest across the Senator-Rouyn claims. In the northern part of the propertyt inclusions of rhyolite occur here and there in the diorite. In the southern part the predominant rock is dacite and in the east-central part of block 44 claim andesite. Dykes of andesite, quartz syenite, and later diabase also occur on the property.The andesite of the Abitibi volcanics is not exposed on the property, but has been intersected in three diamond drill holes, one on the eastern boundary of block 44 and two farther west within the block. This andesite is probably the western end of a band of pillowed andesite well exposed in the Larose claim to the east."

"All mine shaft conveyances in Canada and most of the United States that are supported by a single hoist rope or attachment point and used for transporting persons are required by regulation to be equipped with safety catches and mechanisms. These safety mechanisms, commonly called safety dogs, are designed to stop and hold a free falling conveyance, with a full personnel load, in the event of a hoist rope or attachment component failure. The conveyance’s safety mechanism must be tested under dynamic conditions before it is used to transport personnel. This paper will discuss free-fall testing and it’s results on conveyance free-fall tests performed in the test tower at INCO Limited, Sudbury, Ontario.Topics covered will be free-fall tests on various wood types such as B.C. fir, Karri wood and Trusjoist MacMillan Limited Parallamwood (PSL), comparison of deceleration rates versus free-fall velocity and the influence of safety dog tooth design on deceleration rates."

"This paper briefly reviews some of the gravity research done at McGill University and current Canadian operating practices, with emphasis on results of interest for operators. The following topics are addressed: security, economics, predicting recovery, circuit optimization, unit selection and final upgrading. Emphasis is placed on the Knelson Concentrator.The topic of security and economics are addressed jointly, in terms of the place of the gravity circuit in the mill flowsheet. Actual plant experience is drawn upon to identify potential problems and actual solutions.Predicting primary recovery is linked with a characterization of the ore, the choice of a circuit, and the fraction of the bleed used. Factors such as feed preparation, preliminary upgrading, fraction of recycle treated, ability to recover fines and location of the bleed are discussed.Final upgrading is achieved almost only by tabling and smelting. This can lead to fine gold recovery problems when more effective units are used upstream. Alternatives are discussed.IntroductionResearch on gold recovery by gravity over the past eight years has associated McGill University with a number of gold producers. This paper attempts to review the information gathered from a practical perspective. The Islamic Republic of Iran is a very important producer of raw materials in the world. The country holds 68 types of minerals, including salt, sand and gravel, chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, and iron-ore. With more than 37 billion tons of measured and indicated reserves and 55 billion tons of total mineral resources, Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral-rich countries. Sangan iron-ore mines (SIOM) is one of the biggest iron ore mining complexes in Iran, located in a remote, but strategically important area near the Afghanistan border. The Iranian government has planned several mining projects in this region for a stepwise development over the next 5 years to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. In cooperation with private companies, these projects shall be realized as sustainable as possible. This paper introduces SIOM and describes socially responsible activities undertaken during the initial development of this mining complex. The effects of these activities will be demonstrated. Unique attributes of the Sangan area have a significant impact on the acceptance of SIOM by regional stakeholders. The government has made several social investments that benefit workers´ families and the community. They are attempts to build social capital for the mining operations and demonstrate a commitment for socially responsible mining to the communities and the local population. They aim to create a balance between the local and regional expectations and requirements and the necessity to secure the corporate profitability at a reasonable and sustainable level. Investment in socially responsible activities is not a choice but a necessity to improve the relations between mining companies and stakeholders in the communities. It is recommended that social investments should be carefully planned and implemented from the early stages of mining activities, and should proceed throughout the life cycle of the mines.

A ventilation improvement index (VII) was developed in an effort to propose an optimal ventilation improvement measure for a designated mine. The index was designed to incorporate both ventilation effectiveness and cost efficiency. To verify the effect of the index, a mine experiencing a ventilation problem was selected, the ventilation assessed and ventilation network analyses were conducted. In the selected mine, four areas with ventilation difficulties were detected and an improvement schemes for each area were proposed. These were simulated through network simulation and evaluated using the ventilation improvement index. As a result, an optimum ventilation improvement scheme was proposed. The improvement scheme with the highest VII value was incorporated in the design.

Selecting the best possible cranes and identifying spatial conflict-free locations on sites can result in productivity and safety improvements for large-scale industrial construction projects. In the current practice, experienced lift engineers select cranes based on the heaviest lift and/or the largest lifting radius of the identified crane. This practice is relatively time-consuming, and optimization of the crane?s use and location is also difficult. There are many factors which need to be considered during the crane selection process, a reality which further complicates the process. This paper presents a framework which aims at developing a decision support system to enhance the crane selection process and collision-free path planning for large-scale construction projects. This paper utilizes an innovative crane selection matrix in order to establish a process for optimized crane selection for construction projects. The study considers more than 40 different factors in order to reduce time and improve safety for crane operations. Following finalization of crane type (mobile crane versus tower crane), a visualization model to simulate crane operation and identify collision-free crane operation paths is proposed. This process can assist project managers to plan the lifting process more effectively and efficiently. A case study-based approach was utilized to demonstrate the proposed methodology. The methodology was tested in the planning and construction process for boiler house structures in Mannheim, Germany. The project entailed numerous challenges: one of the major tasks was to lift a 102-ton load on the top of the boiler structure through crane collaboration; space limitations on site also presented several challenges related to crane selection, location, and operation processes. Based on the project constraints, the proposed crane selection framework, and the visualization models, two tower cranes were selected and successfully implemented in the case study.

"Many organizations which have implemented Total Quality Management (TQM) are finding that the process has either stalled or is not working so well as originally envisioned. This can be particularly evident in an engineering environment where the uniqueness of engineers and their particular culture has not been adequately considered. Winning the commitment of a highly educated group ojprojemnnJJ1s to the TQM concepts, which are often initially 5W2 as too simplistic poses special challenges.Successful TQM implementations are found among technical groups where employees have significant input into creating the new work culture, feel empowered to make changes and are well trained in teamwork. A coach who is knowledgeable in implementation problems can, when working closely with the technical teams, help them circumvent obstacles and guide them successfully through the difficult early phases. The remaining key ingredient for success is supportive management which leads the change and is both informed and appreciative of the accomplishment being made.This Paper is based on first-hand experience with common problems and results encountered in implementing TQM in an engineering environment. It is necessary to assess the physical and functional conditions of highway bridges at regular intervals to ensure they still meet their service requirements. Currently, this condition assessment is mainly performed through visual inspection, which has been identified with several limitations (e.g. the timeconsuming assessment process and heavy reliance on inspectors? personal experience). In order to overcome these limitations and enhance the current inspection practice, this paper presents a novel method for automated bridge condition assessment using a hybrid sensing system. Under the method, existing conditions of bridge components are first captured with a stream of point clouds and color images. Then, the bridge components and the defects inflicted on the components are detected utilizing their visual patterns. The detection results are mapped to the point cloud. This way, the 3D information of the components and defects can be retrieved. The bridge condition assessment can be made effectively through the 3D visualization of this information before carrying out any on-site detailed evaluations.

This paper describes an autonomous platform for exploration and navigation within networks of tunnels, as those typically found in underground mines and caves. In the exploration mode, a remotely located supervisor instructs the platform to move through successive sections of the network, gathering range data that is, then, concatenated into 2D/3D survey maps of the environment. In the navigation mode, the supervisor specifies high-level missions on the previously acquired survey maps. A motion planner, then, translates each mission into a set of consecutive navigation actions, separated by natural landmarks. Mission execution consists of detecting landmarks, self-localizing and performing the planned navigation actions.

The Argyle diamond mine is located in the Kimberley region in the northern part of Western Australia at approximately 16°43'S, 128°23'E in subtropical bush/shrub savannah. The 46 ha (113 acres) pipe is situated in the Halls Creek mobile zone, which was cratonized about 1800 Ma ago and adjoins the Kimberley Block, a plateau upheld by Early to Middle Proterozoic rocks underlain by presumably Archean basement. The crater and upper pipe zones of the diatreme have been preserved within tilted and faulted strata of Middle to Late Proterozoic age. Its age of intrusion is about 1178 Ma. The diatreme rock is not kimberlite but olivine lamproite which was not recognized as a primary diamond host rock until 1978. The Kalumburu Joint Venture, a syndicate of local and overseas mining companies, started in 1972 to prospect the Kimberley Block with a modest annual prospecting budget of $125,000. Annual expenditure doubled each year and reached $1 million in 1975 after which CRA took over management of the newly-formed Ashton Joint Venture with an annual expenditure of $2 million (all figures are in current US dollars). The Argyle diatreme was found near the end of the eighth field season and after a total expenditure of $12 million. Annual production is about 34 million carats which places Australia as the world's number one diamond-producing country, although, because of the low value per carat, it is number four in terms of total annual value. The global cost required for a major diamond mine is between $300 and $400 million, with a discovery every 10 to 12 years. Because Canada contains large areas of prospective platform rocks underlain by Archean basement it is likely that a major diamond deposit does exist there. It is probable that it will be found before the end of this decade and exploration expenditure may be in the order of $100 million.

Gravity separation is a technique that depends on the difference in density of minerals for their separation. Although this method is one of the oldest separation techniques, it is still preferred in the industry because of its low capital and operating cost while it is environmental-friendly. In this paper, we present a new numerical methodology that can be used to investigate dynamics of dense slurry flows in gravity separation systems. A simple channel with a set of riffles is selected as a test platform in order to observe the effect of the riffle shape on segregation profile of particles with different densities. It is believed that the riffle shape would affect the slurry flow and possibly cause one class of particles to segregate within the riffle zone. The turbulence, as a disturbance effect within the riffle zone, causes heavy particles to displace the light, that is, the heavy particles will be trapped in riffles, while the lighter particles are carried by water to the end of the channel, which is an example to uninterrupted suspension. MP-PIC model in OpenFOAM is used to study the effect of riffle shape and slurry percentage of solids in this simple gravity separator on particle segregation profile of four discrete mineral density classes, which are Quartz/Clay (SG 2.6), Pyrite (SG 4.2), Chalcopyrite (SG 5.1), and Gold (SG 19.32). Gold particles are found to be readily captured and retained in the riffles because of their high density, while particles with the intermediate densities are more influenced by the flow. The developed model framework has been proven robust and capable of providing physical results even for the flows with a very high percentage of solids, characteristic for mineral processing operations. INTRODUCTION Gravity-based ore concentration techniques make use of differences in density of minerals within an ore to enable separation of valuables from the gangue. As some of the oldest techniques used for ore beneficiation, they are known to offer a range of benefits such as low specific energy consumption and low capital and operating costs (Burt, 1999; Falconer, 2003; Holland-Batt, 1998), however, they suffer from low selectivity, poor separation efficiency, and low capacity. Gravity separation techniques are common practices in the mining industry and are employed widely for the precious mineral concentration, iron ore recovery and coal preparation (Kroll-Rabotin, Bourgeois, & Climent, 2013; Laplante & Spiller, 2002; Williams, 1997). For example, gravity separation systems are highly applicable for precious metal enrichment operations by being included in primary grinding circuits, shaking table tailing separation, pre-concentration of leach feed and flotation concentrate enrichment for both flash and conventional flotation purposes (Burt, 1999; Falconer, 2003; Holland-Batt, 1998; Laplante & Spiller, 2002; McAlister, 1992). Gravity separation can be employed in the copper processing circuits by being integrated into the pre-flotation circuit to capture the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) and any free copper aiming to enhance the gold and copper recovery of the plant. When native copper and GRGs are present in the deposit, this integration not only facilitates plant overall performance via removal of the valuables early in the circuit, but it also reduces downstream operational expenditures due to less retention time of coarser copper particles in the system.

In terms of throughput, product size and power draw, grindcurves provide a measure of the response of the mill performance to changes in mill operating parameters – usually mill filling. Since presenting the principle in 2006, grindcurves have been applied to a wide variety of AG and SAG mills. Mill response has been carefully measured for variations in: mill fillings from 15% to 40%; throughput by a factor of two; power by 50%; feed blends; liner profile; and mill speed from 65% to 80%. The outcomes of this extensive program of work are presented as the measured grindcurves. How they have enhanced our understanding of mill operation and how they may be applied to practical daily mill control is discussed. It is proposed that this technique provides a viable and valuable mill control tool that may find extensive application in the industry.
