This paper states how alloy and welding advances have made possible the rapid development of the use of aluminum in the construction of equipment for earth moving and off -highway rock hauling. The main details are given regarding the construction and field testing carried out on an aluminum prototype body. The test results of strain gauge readings are analysed, and a description is given of how these have been applied in subsequent designs. The increase in the number of aluminum units put into the various types of service in Canada, as well as the problems encountered, is described, and the experience gained from five years of field service is discussed in some detail. An assessment is also made of the durability of the e units. The economics of using aluminum, together with the current development position, are reviewed, and predictions are made for considerable future increases in the use of aluminum units in open-pit and off-highway operations.

Mineral exploration assessment file information has long been considered a useful resource for developing mineral exploration strategies, and one of the most common data sets fled in assessment reports is ground magnetic surveys. The new Earth Resources and Land Information System database (ERLIS) now provides a method for rapidly accessing all references to a specific area through a series of raster images. The ERLIS provides access to the Assessment File Research Imaging (AFRI) database which comprises geo-science mineral exploration assessment file data, Mineral Deposits Inventory (MDI), together with provincial aeromagnetic data from the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines(MNDM). Conversion of the raster images of ground geophysical data to vector data files together with the concatenation of grids from adjacent claims provides a method for constructing high resolution magnetic regional images. The value of this resource is demonstrated through the construction of a single composite magnetic image derived from eight assessment file grids for an area south of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, within Pacaud and Catharine Townships. The composite grid of magnetic data provides a map with resolution that is not achieved by currently available Ontario Geological Survey airborne data sets. Details contained within the new high resolution image, permit the differentiation of lithologies and their boundaries, fault orientations and the location of alteration zones with magnetic response.

"Risk, the product of probability and consequence, is an integral part of mining. Whether evaluating exploration priorities, determining property acquisition potential, reviewing the components of an operating mine or assessing environmental/closure issues, the concept of minimizing risk is central to economic and technically appropriate decision making.Until recently, risk evaluations have tended toward a strongly mathematical basis. With this previous trend, it was essential to establish precise probability density functions to all assessed components or issues where often little information was available. The combined effect of the seemingly complex analyses with corresponding insufficient data often resulted in either a poorly executed risk evaluation or no evaluation whatsoever; either result not acceptable for optimal decision making. This paper presents a simple and practical procedure to carry out risk assessments for the mining industry. Although simplistic in nature, the power and usefulness of the technique is immense. The basis for the procedure involves combining deterministic assessments (often “gut feel”) with appropriate probabilistic descriptors. The resulting procedure, termed Potential Problem Analyses, or PPA, can be used anywhere an evaluation of risk will assist in optimizing technical and/or economic decisions. As will be shown, a key element of the PPA procedure is the multi-disciplinary input the framework allows which makes the method ideal for a teamwork approach to decision making."

The Chagres Smelter, part of the Anglo American plc group situated 80 Km north of Santiago in Chile, completed a series of operational improvement in 2005 resulting in an optimum capacity in its operational units. At present the Chagres Smelter has developed an operational strategy which seeks to reduce bottle-necks in the production process. In this way we have managed to lower operational cost, decrease energy consumption and maximize the capacity of the Acid, Oxygen, and Smelting, Converting, Refining and Casting units. A constant application of international benchmarks together with continuous staff improvement and the latest smelter technology have combined to place Chagres among the finest smelting works in the world. In response to environmental challenges, we have studying various options for investment suitable for a profitable business of benefits to both Anglo American and Chile as a whole. The most relevant technical indicators are the figures : Energy consumption less than 6,3 GJ/ton fine copper, Intensity of smelting rate in Flash Smelting unit of 6900 ton of copper concentrate/m2 settler of furnace area and be one of the top five smelter in direct cash cost .

"Nearly 90 per cent of the iron ore produced in Canada is derived from iron-formation or bedded iron deposits. About 70 per cent of this consists of concentrates obtained from iron-formation; another 20 per cent was formed by natural enrichment processes.Four principal varieties of iron-formation are recognized -the Algoma, Superior, Clinton and Minette types. Differences in their geology, mineralogy, chemical com-position and environment of deposition are of special significance in their evaluation as ore.The properties of the ores, including grade, beneficiation qualities and minor element content in taconites, metataconites and naturally enriched ores, reflect characteristics of the primary stratigraphie units from which they are derived. Geologists or mining engineers familiar with geology are frequently requested by mine operators to give correlation in-formation regarding some mining property with respect to an adjacent area on one at some greater distance. It is the object of this article to mention a few of the difficulties involved in securing this information and to point out some of the salient factors upon which correlation is dependent. In view of the nature of the following discussion, a brief statement of the general character of coal formations .. seems appropriate. Coal formations, by reason of their environment of deposition which is in fresh or brackish water, exhibit the features common to continental deposits, in contrast to those of marine deposits. Such deposits are characterized by rapid variation in thickness and in lithological character both later-ally and vertically. (Plate 1 A). They consist essentially of sandstones and clay shales with all gradations between them, and also a few beds of coal and frequently some conglomerates.

I THINK it can be safely said that no mining operation, whetl1er open-pit or underground, is ever entirely free of water. It follows that every ton of ore bears a charge which represents, either directly or indirectly, the cost of keeping the mine workings as dry as possible. Water problems occur in all phases of mining operations. They cause difficult and costly drilling conditions during the exploration stage, they often seriously delay mine development, they can slow mine production and reduce efficiency, and they are a continued burden over the life of the mine. It is therefore in the interest of all mining men to be familiar with the methods and materials used for grouting. The most common grouting material is cement. The coal mining area in Northern Shaanxi, China, has been taken as the study area, and the damage mechanism of the ecological environment is discussed on the basis of analyzing the characteristics of natural eco-environment and resource development in this area. Mining subsidence is taken as an example, and by using the Gray Correlation Analysis method, the key impact factors have been selected. An assessment model with fuzzy comprehensive evaluation has been constructed, and 12 coal mines have been quantitatively assessed. This paper also constructs an ecosystem health assessment method and index system in the coal mine area on the basis of ecosystem health theory, and assesses the ecosystem health status in the Shenfu coal mining area from 2000?2006. The research results are expected to help the eco-environment protection process in the designated coal mining area.

"THE Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation, through its subsidiaries, the Old Sydney Collieries and the Dominion Coal Company Limited, produces 4% million tons of coal annually from eight submarine collieries situated on the eastern coast of Cape Breton Island. The present workings have a frontage of 20 miles and extend 31/2 miles under the Atlantic ocean on gradients varying from 4 deg. to 24 deg. To date, some of the workings have reached .a depth of cover up to 2,800 feet.The pitching seams, the annual seaward advance, the resulting depth of cover and the rdatively soft roof and floor have necessitated the adoption of extensive longwall mining, with room-and-pillar mining con-fined to areas above the 1,000 foot cover line, where 60 per cent of the -coal is left standing in pillars to support the ocean floor. Longwall mining accounts for 87 per cent of the total production with the remaining outputs obtained from room-and-pillar work and the narrow work development. Seventy-four per cent of the longwall production and 41 per -cent of the room and development production is completely mechanized.Although 2 tons of water is pumped from the collieries for each ton of coal mined, the working sections are relatively dry as the heavy make of water is essentially surface drain-age from the land crop areas. The dry workings and the long haulage distances, which in many cases exceed 4 miles, have resulted in a continuing programme to combat the dust hazard, both at the working face and along the mine roadways."

"The Rexspar uranium deposits are located near Birch Island in central British Columbia. The property lies within the Omineca crystalline belt of the Cordilleran Orogen. Gneiss, schist, tuffaceous and porphyritic trachyte are the main rock types encountered on the property. These rocks are of pre-Late Triassic or probable Mississippian age.Lenticular bodies of mica and pyrite-rich rock are the host of three closely spaced uranium deposits and are found close to a fluorite deposit. The altered trachytic rock as well as the fluorite and uranium deposits are found in the upper part of the trachyte unit. The latest tonnage estimates are 1,441,820 tonnes averaging 23.46% CaF, for the fluorite deposit, 490,966 tonnes of 0.084% U10afor the 'W' deposit, 164,290 tonnes of 0.074% UP8 for the ""B"" deposit and 459,124 tonnes of 0. 071 o/o UP8 for the ""BD"" deposit.A hydrothermal replacement origin was first proposed for the fluorite and uranium deposits. The mineralizing and altering solutions would have been genetically related to a felsic batholith outcropping a few kilometres south of the property. Another hypothesis has been proposed more recently. A volcanic centre has been tentatively identified in the upper part of the trachyte unit, close to the mineral deposits. The fluorite and uranium deposits could possibly be volcanogenic, rather than related to the Cretaceous felsic batholith.IntroductionFluorite and uranium mineralization occur on the property of Consolidated Rexspar Minerals and Chemicals Ltd. in central British Columbia. The area in Quebec immediately north of the Ottawa river is underlain by a large area of granite gneiss intruded in lit-par-lit fashion into Grenville sediments and low silica intrusives of the Buckingham Series. This complex of metamorphic rocks is intruded by a much later magma found, chiefly, as a very large stock about 20 miles in diameter and extending from Brownsburg to Grenville, and as dykes and small outliers at various places adjacent to its outer margin. 1A similar stock at Rigaud, Quebec, is situated south of the Ottawa river and has been described by O. E. Le Roy. The earliest representatives of the later magma are a series of granodiorite dykes characterized by abundant hornblende, along with primary magnetite and subordinate sulphides scattered as roundish grains through anorthoclase and aligoclase feldspars and subordinate quartz. The rock is found as narrow dykes and shows no prominent secondary structures, either in the field or in thin sections under the microscope.

Introduction The prosperity of any country today is dependent upon the efficiency and growth of its primary steel industry. The ?march of the United States of America to its present commanding position in world affairs parallels the growth of its steel industry. The remarkable growth of that industry was possible only because bountiful providence endowed that country with adequate supplies of the raw materials necessary for steel making -coal and iron ore. If we accept this hypothesis, and surely we must, then to what extent can we envisage the future of our own country? This symposium deals with the most important of the raw materials required for steel making -iron ore. If we are blessed with a bountiful supply of iron ore, then surely a glorious future awaits only our taking advantage of that blessing. It is becoming increasingly evident that Canada has immense iron ore deposits. It is my privilege to make you acquainted with one of these, one that can only be classified as among the more important ore reserves in the world. I refer to the Wabana ore deposits in Newfoundland. Location These deposits lie under the floor? of Conception bay, off the east coast of Newfoundland. They consist of a series of beds which outcropped for a distance of about three miles on the northeastern shore of Bell Island, dipping at approximately 8° toward the northwest. This three-mile outcrop is the only key to the occurrence.

"""The theory of buckling of shafts and Steel tunnel-linings"" was published by E. Amstutz in 1970 and commented on by S. Jacobsen in 1974. The authors have revised and enhanced Amstutz’s work to address Jacobsen's comments on its limitations and to extend its validity over a wider range of pipe/shaft geometries, including those commonly found in deep mine access shafts. The author has looked at Amstutz’s assessment of strengthening with flexible shear anchorages and adapted the theory of non-linear shear deformation response of bolts to develop a method of assessing increased buckling capacity utilising the full plastic shear capacity of studs. INTRODUCTION “Amstutz Buckling” refers to the buckling of pipe embedded in concrete under external uniform pressure. In terms of a mining environment, this relates directly to the design of a watertight shaft. This load case will commonly occur where a main shaft is cast against a geostatically stable primary liner and the only load applied to the final shaft is that of a uniform ground water load. Ernst Amstutz wrote his first paper on buckling of pressure-shaft steel linings in 1950 and subsequently improved his theory (Amstutz, 1970), which was then widely adopted for use within the industry. Years later, an alternative approach (Jacobsen, 1974) was proposed. Within his paper Jacobsen critiques Amstutz work, identifying some mathematical inconsistencies and highlighting limitations of the theory imposed by approximations adopted by Amstutz. Despite these limitations Amstutz work has still been used as the favoured design theory for use in the mining industry. In reviewing this body of work the author realised that with the advent of readily available computing software it was possible to adopt an iterative approach using Amstutz approximate formulae to find a solution to the original precise formulae, thus eliminating the limitations highlighted by Jacobsen The shear deformation to load characteristics of bolts has long been established (Crawford & Kulak 1968) and used for the plastic design of bolted connections in shear. This relationship is directly transferable to the design of shear studs, typical properties are well known, and actual values easily established in simple lab tests. The author has taken this relationship and modified Amstutz theory (Amstutz, 1970) for shear anchored strengthened liner buckling, to give a more efficient solution, using readily available material properties."

The objective of metrology in mineral exploration is to derive unbiased confidence limits for masses of metals contained in reserves and resources. Sets of test results for gold and silver determined in pairs of interleaved bulk samples give unbiased confidence limits for the central value of each metal. The same sets of test results show how to verify spatial dependence by applying Fisher?s F-test to the variance of a set and the first variance term of the ordered set. A significant degree of spatial dependence gives a higher degree of precision for the central values of gold and silver. Plotting variance terms of an ordered set against the variance of the set and its lower limits of asymmetric 99% and 95% confidence ranges gives a sampling variogram. Sampling variograms put in plain view where spatial dependence in sampling units or sample spaces dissipates into randomness. The application of statistical methods to test results for sets of ordered core samples within boreholes, and for sets of ordered ore volumes within profiles, plays an important role in defining reserves and resources.

"The Cumberland Basin of Nova Scotia has long been considered a structural basin by virtue of the elliptical outcrop and inward dip pattern of the Pennsylvanian outcrops. Recent published and unpublished data indicate that subsidence began in the late Devonian, perhaps resulting from a graben or rift. The Mississippian sediments which filled the growing depression were continental, lacustrine and marine with evaporites. The cessation of the riftforming processes is recorded by the alluvial swamp-type sediments of the Pennsylvanian which filled the depression. In excess of 25,000 feet of Carboniferous rocks are believed to be present in the deepest part of the Basin. Starting with the rift hypothesis, we can speculate on the kinds of sediments, their location and the structural features present beneath the Pennsylvanian surface. Using surface exposures and a limited amount of subsurface data, we theorize that (1) the Mississippian evaporites acted as glide zones which effectively divided the Basin into two horizontal structural layers. The rocks above the evaporites, responding to Appalachian stresses, formed the long diapiric folds with cores of overthickened evaporites. Below the evaporites the structures are related to movements of the rift floor, compaction closures and structures formed by differential horizontal movements of the rift walls. (2) The rift, in its deeper parts, will have more and a greater variety of marine rocks than the outcrops indicate. Should the rift hypothesis be correct, the possibility of finding hydrocarbons is enhanced."

"Ventilation is an essential component of any underground mine, playing a vital role in ensuring the health and safety of workers, and a mine’s continuous operation. At a time when mining companies are increasingly having to move to deeper underground operations in pursuit of high-grade ore-bodies, the search is on for more efficient ventilation systems that will allow mining to be carried out at even deeper levels whilst ensuring the protection of workers and the maximisation of productivity through temperature management and the lowering of energy costs. Mining companies today are looking for innovative ways to deliver new technologies and procedures to enhance their mine’s profitability. Energy consumption by mine ventilation systems is higher than ever due to stringent specifications of underground equipment (primarily combustion engine emissions), air quality standards and mining at deeper levels which all require more powerful ventilation systems. With energy costs associated with operating ventilation systems being a mine’s second-highest cost of production after labour, finding the optimal ventilation solution is critical to a mine’s performance. Proper fan design remains a major factor in reducing capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operational expenditures (OPEX), which means that there are compelling reasons for making use of comprehensive factory testing at full power before fans are dispatched to site to simulate the mine’s current and future design requirements, and thus verify the fan’s effectiveness in ‘real’ conditions.INTRODUCTION A primary mine fan is considered the heartbeat of the entire mine ventilation system, drawing fresh air from the surface and providing a safe environment for miners. A ventilation system’s lack of performance often leads to a reduction in acceptable air quality levels for underground working operations and can potentially have an adverse impact on production rates."

Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible.
