"In the last decades heuristic approaches based on logic rules have been one favored tool to control flotation units and plants on top of distributed control systems. Fundamental knowledge on flotation processes, expressed in reliable models, and programs to assure the quality of the information, contained in available measurements, are still insufficient to develop robust predictive control strategies. In this paper the idea of using simplified models, when a known disturbance is coming into the process, is explored. As a first approach, the set points of the froth depth and air flow rate controllers are estimated based on this model. Since these target predictions are only approximate, a conventional feedback expert system, based on logic rules, continues the task of calculating the set points of the distributed controllers, in order to decrease the gap between actual and desirable metallurgical targets. This combined actions permitted a fast response of the process to change the operation of the circuit when a measured disturbance is detected. This control system was implemented and experimentally evaluated in a pilot rougher flotation circuit, with three pneumatic cells, with froth depth and air flow rate controllers in each cell. Since the circuit is operated for the air-water system, a phenomenological model, with parameters estimated from industrial data, is fed on-line with real operating variables and virtual values, characterizing the feed (grades, solids%, particle size distribution), in order to predict the metallurgical targets (recovery and concentrate grade). Several cases are discussed showing the benefits of this control system and the possible improvements to work on. INTRODUCTIONToday, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design."

Diagnosis of the surface chemical factors playing a part in flotation separation of a valuable sulfide phase requires measurement of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic species that are statistically different between the concentrate and tail streams. Time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) can be used to identify sufficient particles of a specific mineral phase for reliable statistics determining a mean value for each species with 95% confidence intervals (1). Using the region of interest (ROI) facility in the Tof-SIMS software, a mass spectrum from each particle, at 1-2 monolayer sensitivity, is recorded and stored. This analysis is reported for a chalcopyrite / pyrite / sphalerite mineral mixture conditioned at pH 9 for 20 minutes in order to study transfer of copper from chalcopyrite via solution to the other two mineral surfaces since this mechanism can be responsible for their inadvertent flotation in copper recovery. Analysis from mineral selection based on specific ToF-SIMS signals (eg. Pb, Zn, Cu, Fe, Fe/Cu) indicated no statistical difference in the copper intensities on pyrite and sphalerite after this conditioning. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the ToF-SIMS imaging data identifies combinations of factors strongly correlated (positively or negatively) in images or spectra from mass spectra recorded at each of 256x256 pixels in a selected area of particles. PCA is a better method of selecting minerals due to multi-variable recognition. It has clearly separated a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases. The method has been extended to samples from an operating plant again with excellent phase recognition and diagnostic surface chemistry.

"In this study, laboratory flow tests were conducted on 2-D artificial rock fracture network models containing a single intersection constituted by two inlet and two outlet branches. Three models with different intersecting angles of 60°, 90° and 120° were tested using both dye solution and distilled water. Constant flow rates were imposed on one inlet, and the flow patterns in the fracture intersections were captured by using a CCD camera. The test results were compared with the predictions made by numerical simulations that solved the Navier-Stokes equations. The results revealed that when Reynolds number (Re) is as low as less than 1, the intersecting angle has negligible influence on the flow rate of each branch and the flow patterns within a fracture intersection. As the interesting angle ? and Re (e.g., from 10 to 200) change, the normalized flow rates of different outlet branches change significantly, due to the inertial effect of fluid flow. These changes could be represented by a series of mathematical expressions involving Re and ?, which could be applied to fracture network models to improve their prediction accuracy on hydraulic properties (e.g., permeability and breakthrough curves of particles) of rock masses. INTRODUCTIONCoupled stress, flow, heat and mass transport are the corner stone subjects for many geoscience and geo-engineering disciplines, such as geological disposal of radioactive waste and geothermal energy exploitation. Many outstanding issues need to be investigated to enhance the knowledge on these subjects, and specifically more in-depth research in testing and modeling of the fluid flow in fractured rock masses is needed. In recent years, discrete fracture network (DFN) models have been extensively used to study the fluid flow and mass transport behaviors of fractured rock masses (e.g., Min et al., 2004; Zhao et al., 2011). In these models, each fracture is usually represented by a parallel-plate model, in which fluid flow exactly follows the cubic law. Therefore, comparative flow rate in each outlet branch of an intersection in these models only depends on its aperture. In reality, due to the surface roughness of fractures, the magnitude of mechanical aperture is usually larger than that of the hydraulic aperture of each fracture (Li et al., 2008; Xiong et al., 2011), and abundant flow patterns could exist in an intersection, influenced by its geometry, varying with changing Reynolds number (Re) (Kosakoswski & Berkowitz, 1999). Recent studies have also revealed that different mixing patterns might exist at a fracture intersection, bounded between streamline routing model and complete mixing model, that determine the final distribution of solutes in fractured rock masses (Johnson and Brown, 2001; Park et al., 2001). Numerical simulation has been the principal method adopted in previous studies, and the studies conducting flow tests on intersected fractures are less reported (Wilson & Witherspoon, 1976; Johnson and Brown, 2001). In this study, laboratory flow tests and numerical simulations by solving the Navier-Stokes equations were conducted on 2-D models containing a single intersection constituted by two inlet and two outlet branches, intersected at different angles. The main objective is to study the influence of intersecting angle on the flow behavior of the intersected fractures and the variations of flow patterns and fluid redistribution in each model along with the changes of the Re and the intersecting angle ?. Alberta Plains coals exhibit an almost rectilinear system of vertical fracturing called "cleat", which is best traced by mapping true bearings of underground coal mine rooms. The cleat pattern is approximately conformable with a pattern of surficial features and a pattern of bedrock jointing in the Alberta Plains, and with the trend of the Rocky Mountain Trench, but not with the distribution pattern of coal rank nor with the trend of the eastern boundary of the Rocky Mountains and Foothills physiographic province. The processes resulting in cleat remain in doubt, but cleat is always of practical importance in extracting coal from deeply buried deposits.

The machining of thin wall parts, often used in the aeronautical industry still creates a number of problems, including panel deformation. Quality and productivity are often affected. This study seeks to determine the optimal conditions for cutting in order to guarantee a competitive fabrication of parts while still maintaining quality and delivery deadlines. The studied model (Spar) is a typical structural part used in the assembly of airplane wings. The main objective of this study was to improve two performance aspects: surface quality finish (quality criteria) and the rate of cutting by stock removal (economic criteria). To achieve this objective, we used an evaluation process of the geometrical error issuing from the machine-tool. We also determined the stability zones of the machine-tool's dynamic system. Finally, a series of high-speed machining tests (finishing cuts) were conducted using an experimental structured approach (16 000 - 24 000 rpm). Profile measures of surface roughness and cycle times registered during trials allowed us to establish optimal cutting conditions. Surface roughness improved as well as cutting by stock removal. Four parameters were taken into consideration: axial depth of cut, chip load, spindle speed, and cutting fluid. Finally, the influence of the type of cutting fluid was evaluated to show that it did not significantly affect machining results.

The zinc pressure leach plant at HBM&S's operations is now in its fifteenth year of operation. Current pressure leach operation is steady at a concentrate processing rate of around 26.5 tonnes per hour. A new cellhouse with a design capacity of 124,000 tonnes per annum and the capability of expansion of up to 154,000 tonnes per annum was commissioned in July 2001. The potential to expand the capacity of the pressure leach circuit and associated processes, as well as the purification circuit and casting plant, to meet the maximum capacity of the cellhouse has been investigated. This paper reviews current operation of the zinc plant, as well as the possibility of a capacity increase without major process modifications or major capital expenditures.

ABSTRACT: Falcon concentrators are enhanced gravity separators designed for concentrating fine particles. The Falcon UF model is unique in that it is dedicated to beneficiation of ultrafines, one key feature being that it does not make use of any fluidization water. We investigated the physics of particle transport inside Falcon concentrators, and concluded that separation efficiency is governed by differential settling velocity. We derived and published a predictive model of the partition function under dilute conditions. We intend to extend the initial model to concentrated ultrafine suspensions for application to industrial scenarios by adding hindered settling to account for solid concentration effects.

The Hat Creek coal deposit s occur within folded and faulted Tertiary (Eocene) strata of the Coldwater Group, which comprises weakly lithified shales, siltstones and conglomerates underlying the floor and lower flanks of the valley of Upper Hat Cr eek . This upland valley,16 miles in length and 2-4 miles in width, is located within the eastern foothills of the Coast Mountains, 120 miles northeast of Vancouver, approximately midway between the towns of Lillooet and Ashcroft, in the Interior Dry Belt of British Columbia . Most of the valley floor is covered by till and glacial outwash deposits ranging up to 500 feet in depth. Became of this overburden cover , the majority of the data on the coal deposit have been obtained from diamond drilling done during 1974?76 by the property owner, B .C. Hydro and Power Authority. Because of the limitations imposed by the lack of out crop, the Tertiary geology at Upper Hat Creek is imperfectly known; however, it appears from correlation with other coal-bearing Tertiary remnants in the southern interior of the province that these remnants, including Upper Hat Creek, may represent preserved segments of the western shoreline of a Tertiary continental sea along which deltaic swamps developed and were sustained for unusually long stable periods, giving rise to the world's thickest known coal beds.

"4.1. IntroductionThis chapter reviews the geochemistry of the platinum-group elements (POE) in sulphur-poor silicate rocks, and the limited data on POE in silicate, oxide, sulphide, arsenide and sulpharsenide minerals. The earliest geochemical studies of POE in silicate rocks, minerals and meteorites were carried out mainly by Goldschmidt, the Noddacks and their co-workers, and are reviewed in Crocket (1969). These researchers established the siderophile character of the POE, emphasized the common association of the group with sulphides in ultramafic-mafic rocks and suggested that very low concentrations of POE are typical of sulphur-poor silicate rocks and minerals. Much of these data were for Pt and Pd only and are more than 50 years old. Because of the poor sensitivity typical of the available analytical methods, few reliable data were obtained on silicate rocks in these early studies. Surveys of POE geochemistry demonstrate that the data base for sulphur-poor silicate rocks is very restricted, although considerable highquality data for Pd and Ir have been accumulated (Wright and Fleischer 1965, Yushko-Zakharova eta/., 1967, Mertie 1969, Crocket 1969, 1979, Keays 1981).Two recent publications, Vol. 71, No. 7 (1976), of Economic Geology (An Issue Devoted to Platinum-Group Elements) and Vol. 17, Part 2 (1979), of The Canadian Mineralogist (Nickel-Sulphide and Platinum-Group-Element Deposits), are of special interest. These volumes are clear testimony to the impressive progress made in the last decade toward describing the mineralogical and geochemical aspects of POE ore deposits, but at the same time demonstrate the constraints in modelling POE ore genesis due to our meager knowledge of the. POE content and distribution among minerals in the source rocks of ultramafic and mafic magmas. It is clear that the phases hosting POE in mantle source rocks are poorly understood. Nevertheless, Naldrett and Duke (1980) have shown that the absolute and relative concentrations of POE in magmatic sulphide ores are related to the degree of partial melting of mantle peridotites, and subsequent processes of batch equilibration and fractional segregation of sulphides."

An account is given of the developments brought about in the last fifteen years by metallurgical research in the field of heat treatment of steels. The practical aspects of these developments are especially emphasized. Methods of representation of the phase-change during austenitizing and sub-critical transformation of austenite are described and the importance of time-temperature-transformation charts for the planning of heat treatment cycles is shown. Special copies such as retained austenite and internal stresses developed on quenching are also discussed in some detail. Due to the interest shown currently in these problems, it has been thought advisable to describe briefly the underlying principles and present some of the results already available.

GENERAL Location of Property THE Stirling zinc-lead-copper deposit is in Richmond county, Cape Breton, about a quarter of a mile southwest from Stirling P.O., and some 45 miles southwest from Sydney. The property is accessible by road for at least nine months of the year, and during the navigation period coastal boats maintain a service touching at the port of Fourchu, eleven miles from the mine. When flying conditions permit, the Cape Breton Flying Club, of Sydney, will carry passengers to or from the property, a service which has been particularly advantageous on two occasions when hospitalization was urgently required. The Company has mining rights on leases Nos. 73-74, 78-80, and 101-104, inclusive, and owns 166 acres at Stirling and one acre at Fourchu. The ore deposit is in lease No. 73. History The Stirling deposit was discovered in the 'nineties', probably about 1895. The original discovery is said to have been made in the bed of Copper creek, which traverses the ore-zone. For a number of years, indifferent development work was carried on with a view to copper production only, and it was not until1915-16 that attention was directed to the possible production of zinc. Previously, the ore had been considered too complex for metallurgical treatment. During the period 1916-24 several operators attempted to develop the property, among them being the Stirling Exploration Company, Stirling Mining & Smelting Company, New Jersey Zinc Company of New York, Hayden & Stone Company of Boston, and The Eastern Mining & Milling Company. Up to 1924, the work was limited mainly to trenching, stripping, ? diamond drilling, and shot drilling.

Several grindability tests were developed over the years to design grinding circuits or optimize existing operations. Each test has its own strengths and weaknesses and it is imperative to select the proper test procedure(s) to meet project deliverables and minimize the risk of a project. Pilot plant testing of large bulk samples historically constituted the traditional approach for AG or SAG design, but was gradually replaced by small-scale tests. Nowadays, conducting grindability tests requiring only a few kilos of material on several samples is a more typical approach to grinding mill design. This paper summarises the requirements and deliverables of various bench-scale test procedures, their strengths and weaknesses, and cases where AG/SAG pilot testing should still be performed.

"Robex Resources interrupted production at the Nampala Mine in September 2014 following throughput and gold recovery results which were below expectations during the first months of operation. After a thorough plant audit, an important brainstorming took place in order to identify an economical path to resume production. It was clearly identified that a significant investment was necessary at the concentrator prior to restarting the plant, namely the addition of a ball mill and a new elution system.The mineral processing simulation software USIM PAC was used in order to simulate the grinding circuit in design. The simulations’ outputs allowed the ball mill characteristics and the surrounding classification devices to be designed with more accuracy. Many ball mills available from second hand retailers were therefore studied in the simulated circuit. The chosen ball mill, which was in perfect condition, had the advantage of being available for rapid delivery on site.The paper first describes the ball mill sizing method in comparison with the conventional Allis Chalmers method. It then describes the phase 2 concentrator start-up (that took place in 2016) with the commissioning of the ball mill, the classification circuit, the gravity concentration, the four (4) new carbon-in-leach (CIL) tanks, and the Zadra elution system (The phase 1 start-up took place in 2014). It finally provides production data compared to expected simulation data, as commercial production was reached in January 2017.IntroductionDesigning a new concentrator or new equipment within an existing concentrator requires significant efforts to identify possible bottlenecks and their causes (i.e. limiting equipment or sectors) and accurate sizing of major equipment can have a tremendous impact on the economy of the whole project. In the presented case study, the ball mill was the critical equipment and oversizing it could have brought the Capex to a level where the project would not have gone through. Inversely, undersizing the mill could have resulted in lower production and therefore no economic viability for the project once it is in operation.During engineering studies, equipment sizing often relies on a static mass balance and one-by-one sizing of all pieces of equipment. The sizing is then left to the equipment manufacturer or in the case of mills, evaluated with empirical models mostly relying on the Bond equations (Allis Chalmers method) [Rowland and Kjos, 1978]. This methodology shows the disadvantage of not considering interaction between equipment in a mineral processing circuit, especially when recirculation occurs. Also, it has the disadvantage of not using the more advanced grinding models that include the use of the whole particle size distribution as well as phenomenological components by only using limited parameters in the ore particle size distribution (i.e. the P80). This can be explained by the lack of data that sometimes needs to be gathered in order to tune the more advanced models but also by the conservative mindset in mineral concentration engineering which does not always favor the use of process simulation. In many aspects of process engineering, Soutex has demonstrated its affinity to using simulation in order to size equipment with more accuracy, consider process variability, simulate complex systems, and study supply chain management (Berton et al., 2015)."

This paper investigated the loss of cyanide via oxidation in CIP or CIL processes by relating the cyanide oxidation to its major oxidation product, cyanate. The results showed that the oxidation of both free cyanide and copper cyanide complexes are substantially enhanced by the presence of carbon. The rate of cyanide oxidation was found to occur in the order: Cu(CN)32- > CN- > Cu(CN)2-. The cyanide oxidation rate in the presence of copper and carbon increased significantly with increasing dissolved oxygen concentration, typical of CIL vs. CIP conditions. Cyanide oxidation rate of iron, zinc or nickel cyanide complexes was minimal.

In Alberta, oil sands bitumen is utilized for synthetic crude oil production by surface mining, bitumen extraction followed by primary (coking) and secondary (catalytic hydrotreating) upgrading processes, or by catalytic hydrocracking and hydrotreating replacing the primary and secondary upgrading processes. Oil sands tailings, composed of water, sands, silt, clay and residual bitumen, is produced as a byproduct of the bitumen extraction process. Several processes have been proposed for the treatment of oil sands tailings, resulting in different recovered water characteristics, consolidation rates and consolidated solid characteristics, which may have effects on the performance of the overall plant operations. A process for the same purpose has been developed by treating the oil sands tailings with CaO lime and CO2 and thickening it using a suitable thickener. In this process a release water of acceptable properties is recovered in a short retention time, which makes it possible to recycle the recovered water, probably after a reconditioning treatment, as warm as possible to improve the thermal efficiency of the extraction process. The paper presents the theory and laboratory results for the CaO and CO2 thickening of low temperature flotation tailings. The water release rates, segregation potential of the thickened underflow and chemistry of the release water are shown and discussed. It is suggested that in using the proposed process, the thickened tailings underflow can be disposed for further consolidation, or combined with the coarse tailings to produce Blended Composite Tailings, corresponding to the Composite Tailings process in the existing hot water extraction plants.

A graphical method has been developed for the evaluation of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Act Noise Exposure Index and the Equivalent Continuous Sound Level. The method makes use of a noise survey form and a mechanical integrator with two sliders, and is less tedious and susceptible to error than alternative methods. The graphical method is adaptable to various codes for noise exposure and may be used with any instrument that measures noise level. One example of its application to a practical situation in a Canadian mine is given to demonstrate the procedure .

"Brogan coal containing mean averages of 6,93% w/w total sulphur (1.1% sulphate sulphur, 1.6% organic sulphur and 4.24% pyritic sulphur) and 16.34% mineral ash was used as the test coal in these studies.Shake-culture leaching studies on seven size fractions of the coal, ranging in size from 0.045 mm to 1.7 mm, showed that the rate of pyrite leaching was inversely proportional to the particle size. As the use of continuous stirred tank reactors would be uneconomical for the reclamation of waste coal, column leaching studies were initiated on coal sieved to >6.35 mm to < 12.7 mm, The leachate was monitored for all metal ions and the release of iron was used to monitor the rate of pyrite oxidation . Measurable amounts of Zn, Co, Ni, Mn, and V, all of which can replace iron in the pyrite crystal structure, were released during the initial stages of leaching. Further, high concentrations of AI, Ca and Sr and trace amounts of Sn, As. Se, B, Ca, Cr, Si, and Ti were detected in the column effluents.These studies suggest that bacterial leaching will remove the pyrite and qualitative amounts of environmentally undesirable trace metals from the coal if such a process is developed for waste coal reclamation.IntroductionIn 1947, Colmer and Hinkle showed that acid mine drainage was the result of an oxidative attack of the iron-mineral sulphides by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans to produce sulphuric acid . Ashmead (1955) proposed the use of these organisms to desulphurize coal , but the subsequent research effort was concentrated on the metabolism and physiology of these extreme acidophiles.A limited number of studies have been reported on the bacterial leaching of pyrite from coal (Silverman et al., 1963; Dugan, 1977). However, the bacterial oxidation of pyrite is a self-limiting first-order reaction, probably due to the precipitation of Fe(OH)J and elemental sulphur , which progressively inhibits intimate contact between the bacterial cells and the sulphide-mineral surface. Consequently, the best pyrite oxidation experiments with coal reported to date required five days to remove 97070 of the pyrite (Dugan &Apel , 1978) using mixed cultures of T. ferrooxidans and T. thiooxidans."

"Behaviour of rebar bolts subjected to combined shear and bending in underground potash mining applications is not well understood. An experimental investigation compared load applied to resin-grouted No. 25 metric rebar to theoretical load, calculated using elastic bending theory. Distributed optical sensing (fibre optic) technology allowed axial strain measurements at 1.25 mm increments along the length of rebar. Experimental procedure, data processing methods, and equipment improvements are needed for field applications of optical sensing technology. Medium and low carbon steels, modified with uranium, were studied in order to evaluate the influence of uranium on forge ability, mechanical 11roperties, response to heat treatment and microstructure. Uranium contents ranged up to 0.70 per cent. The medium carbon steels are hot short if the uranium content exceeds about 0.35 per cent. More uranium can be tolerated in low carbon steels. The hot shortness is caused by the formation of intergranular phase UFe2. Critical transformation temperatures, Jominy hardenability, and resistance to tempering are not significantly affected by the 11resence of uranium. Similarly, uranium has little or no effect on the tensile properties of carbon steels. The addition of uranium has a favourable effect 11n the stress-rupture characteristics and some beneficial effect on fatigue properties. However, more results are required for verification. In the steels investigated, it seems that most of the uranium carbide combines to form complex inclusions of U (0, C, N) or (C, N), rich in oxygen or nitrogen or both.
