"All gold deposits within the Tisdale Group are spatially associated with carbonate alteration zones; however, not all carbonate alteration zones are host to gold mineralization.Within the komatiitic and magnesium tholeiitic volcanic rocks at the base of the Tisdale Group, discordant and stratabound carbonate alteration zones occur throughout. The alteration zones consist of a ferroan dolomite - quartz inner assemblage which is enveloped by calcite-quartz and an outer chlorite-rich subzone. Factors which control the distribution of carbonate alteration include joint systems, flow contacts, synvolcanic faults and bulk composition of the host rock.Two environments of carbonate alteration can be recognized: 1) The subsea-floor alteration zones developed within the volcanic rock succession where hydrothermal fluids did not discharge directly onto the sea floor. Insignificant gold production has come from this alteration environment. 2) Seafloor zones, which represent points of hydrothermal fluid discharge into the hydrosphere, are spatially associated with felsic volcanic rock complexes and are host to syngenetic, auriferous cherty dolomite.Carbonatized, magnesium tholeiitic basalts, which are host to the auriferous, cherty dolomite, are enriched in antimony (>0.35 ppm), boron (>30 ppm), gold (>5 ppb) and lithium (> 35 ppm), but are depleted in copper ( < 70 ppm), with respect to carbonatized basalts not associated with gold. Orerelated, altered komatiitic flows can be screened using gold (>5 ppb), lead(> 10 ppm), arsenic(> 70 ppm) and antimony (>1 ppm).The habit, petrographic characteristics and certain geochemical characteristics of the altered volcanic rocks suggest that the hydrothermal fluid was of sea-water origin."

"The Preissac-Lacorne batholith is composed of suites of early metaluminous calc-alkalic gabbroic to granodioritic intrusives, three late peraluminous monzogranite plutons and numerous Li, Be and Ta-bearing granitic pegmatites. The Lacorne pluton is dominated by biotite and biotite + muscovite monzogranites containing abundant Be and Ta-bearing granitic pegmatites (40-80% volume). The pluton is surrounded by swarms of unzoned or poorly zoned spodumene-rich pegmatite dykes. The La Motte pluton is composed of biotite monzogranites, biotite+ muscovite monzogranites and rare muscovite + garnet monzogranites. Li, Be and Ta-bearing pegmatites are less abundant than in the Lacorne pluton and are commonly associated with molybdenite bearing quartz-muscovite-K-feldspar veins. In the Preissac pluton, muscovite + garnet monzogranites and muscovite + biotite + garnet monzogranites are the dominant rock types. The pluton rarely contains granitic pegmatites and these are generally barren. However, numerous molybdenite bearing quartz and quartz-feldspar-muscovite hydrothermal veins are observed.Li, Be andTa-bearing pegmatites display a crude spatial zonation around their parent monzogranites. Spodumene-rich pegmatites are generally unzoned or poorly zoned and are confined to the surrounding metasedimentary or metavolcanic rocks or crop out in the early gabbroic to granodioritic intrusives surrounding the monzogranites. Ta and Be-bearing pegmatites are usually concentrated towards the margins of their parent monzogranites. The highly fractionated nature ofmonzogranites (high Rb/Sr, low K?Rb, Ba?Sr, Zr/Nb ... ), their peraluminous composition (corundum normative and muscovite bearing) and the numerous occurrences of Ta and Be-bearing pegmatite dykes represent important criteria for the exploration of fertile granites."

The kinetics of the oxidation of thiosulfate by copper(I I) in ammoniacal solutions have been studied in the presence and absence of dissolved oxygen. The formation of an intermediate mixed ammine/thiosulfate copper(II) complex ion has been confirmed and the rate of the reaction monitored by simultaneous on-line spectrophotometric, dissolved oxygen and potentiometric measurements. The rate of the anaerobic oxidation of thiosulfate by copper(II) was found to be orders of magnitude slower than that in the presence of dissolved oxygen and is inhibited in the presence of ammonia and anions such as sulfate and chloride as a result of competition with thiosulfate for the axial coordination sites on the copper(II) tetrammine complex. In the presence of dissolved oxygen, it was found that the copper(I) thiosulfate complexes are only very slowly oxidized while the copper(I) diammine complex is rapidly reoxidised to the copper(II) state. Thus, the initial rapid reaction with copper(II) leads to a pseudo steady-state condition in which the concentration of copper(I) is relatively constant and the rate of oxidation of thiosulfate can be predicted from the measured rate of oxidation of copper(I) by oxygen in ammoniacal solutions. The effects of the concentrations of ammonia and thiosulfate on the oxidation rate can be rationalized on the basis of the above coupled to the species distribution of copper(I) in the ammonia/thiosulfate system. It is shown that, with relatively simple measurements of dissolved oxygen and copper concentrations, the rate of oxidation of thiosulfate can be predicted under typical leaching conditions.

THE iron deposits of central Labrador occur within a relatively small area, herein called the Knob Lake Iron Range, in which a northwest-trending series of low hills and ridges defines the height-of-land at the boundary between provinces of Quebec and Newfound-land. Approximately two-thirds of the deposits are in Quebec and the remainder in Labrador, with several deposits straddling the inter-provincial boundary. These deposits are being exploited in open-pit mines by the Iron Ore Company of Canada centered at Schefferville, Quebec. Since 1954 this company has produced more than 56 million tons of iron ore to become Canada's leading iron ore producer. With indicated reserves of more than 375 million tons of direct-shipping ore and large tonnages of iron formation amenable to beneficiation, this mining district is assured of a long life. This paper describes the Knob Lake iron ores and their geological settings and stresses the features that lead to a better understanding of their origin. The

The measurement of acoustic signals produced by a tumbling mill has been previously used to determine the operating state of the mill and correlate the variations of the sound intensity with the operating conditions of the mill. Separately, the discrete element model (DEM), a software simulation of the mill, was developed to provide insight into the operation of the mill. Presently, there has not been much work reconciling the DEM simulation of the mill with the acoustic signal. Working from basic principles of linear, time-invariant systems, agreement between an acoustic DEM simulation and the measured signal is sought. First, the impulse response function of the mill is measured. The DEM provides the forces applied to the mill shell as a function of time. A convolution of these simulated shell forces and the transfer function gives the simulated acoustic signal. This signal is compared to the measured acoustic signal, both in the time domain and the frequency domain. Finally, a discussion of the results is given.

The massive sulphides containing ore values in zinc, lead, copper and silver were discovered in 1953 as a result of a joint venture between the American Metal Company and the International Nickel Company of Canada. The discovery was named after Mr. Heath Steele, manager of exploration for Amco at the time of the discovery.Mill production began in February 1957; however, the mine was forced to shutdown in 1958 due to depressed metal prices and metallurgical problems. It was re-opened in 1962 and milling operations resumed at 725 t/d until 1968 when the milling capacity was boosted to 1450 t/d and then to 2700 t/d in 1969.OreThe main ore zones are massive sulphides with very fine mineral grain. The chalcopyrite, galena and marmatitesphalerite occurrences are finely disseminated.Liberation is accomplished by grinding to 68% to 72% <400 mesh. Average mill feed assays are 0.8% to 1.2% copper, 1.8% to 2.5% lead, and 5.5% to 6.5% zinc, with 60 to 75 g/t silver."

The corrosion and wear properties of a series of chrome white iron (CWI) castings were study using electrochemical and low-stress sliding abrasion tests. The results confirm that the corrosion resistance of these materials is largely dependant on the quantity of chromium in the matrix, while the wear resistance is mainly controlled by the volume fraction of chromium carbides. A pseudo-wear/corrosion map is developed to identify alloy compositions that may be suited for erosion/corrosion conditions.

"The number of underground mines replacing diesel by battery powered mobile equipment is growing worldwide. The latter produces locally zero emissions and less heat, improving air quality in the working areas, and can potentially reduce energy costs due to lower ventilation requirements and in the face of higher fuel prices. However, there is a lack of systematic approaches to evaluate the potential economic benefit of switching from diesel mobile technologies to electric ones. This paper presents a method to answer the question of whether a mine with known operating conditions should invest in battery-powered electric equipment to reduce its total costs. Furthermore, this method provides the optimal number of electric and diesel equipment in relationship with their impact on the ventilation system and the total costs of running the mine from the energy perspective. A case study of an underground mine in Northern Ontario (Canada) is presented to validate the method proposed. The scenarios studied include the specific climatic conditions of the region, and the possibility to use heat recovery for the ventilation system. Overall, results show that the use of electric mobile plants is cost competitive, especially so when electricity cost can be lowered through load-shedding strategies.INTRODUCTIONOf the multiple advantages of using electrical vehicles (EV) underground in mining, the potential increase in air quality and comfort is the most significant (Paraszczak, Svedlund, Fytas, and Laflamme, 2014). Until recently, fully battery-powered electrical underground heavy duty machinery (i.e., loaders or trucks) were not available, so that tethered and trolley assisted vehicles were the only electric alternatives to diesel powered vehicles (Bétournay et al., 2011). Today, several commercial battery-based alternatives are available (General Electric Fairchild, 2015; RDH Mining Equipment, 2015; Paraszczak et al., 2014). Operational details can be found in Ewing (2015). The main battery technology used (Lithium Iron Phosphate, LiFePO4, or LFP) was already anticipated in Bétournay et al. (2011) as a good candidate for these types of vehicles. "Closed mine sites are widely regarded as a negative asset due to their legacy of environmental impacts. These sites are often characterized by waterbodies with elevated metal concentrations and low pH that are traditionally considered to have little or no value. These sites are potential sources of beneficial biocompounds produced by microalgae in response to environmental stresses. A bio¬prospecting program found that certain microalgae from waterbodies near historical mine sites exhibited higher antibacterial activity than any microalgae previously reported in the literature. There is potential for the mining industry to be involved in examining features such as tailings ponds at mine sites for high-value compounds, including ones that might help mitigate rapidly growing microbial resistance to current antibiotics. ¦ KEYWORDS Antibacterial, Closed mining sites, Metabolites, Microalgae, Stressed environments RÉSUMÉ Les sites miniers clôturés sont généralement considérés comme des actifs négatifs en raison de leurs répercussions sur l’environnement. Introduction The Sydney coal-field extends for a distance of thirty miles along the northeastern coast of Cape Breton island. At a central focal point at the tip of the south arm of Sydney harbour, seven miles or so in from the Atlantic ocean, is the city of Sydney, with Port Morien to the southeast and Sydney Mines to the north . Mining centres along the ocean coast between these points include Birchgrove, Reserve, Glace Bay, and Waterford. The field is divided into three districts or &apos;basins&apos;, namely, Morien basin to the south, Glace Bay in the centre, and the Lingan-Sydney Mines basin to the northeast. The eastern and western portions of the latter are known as the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basins, respectively. Six distinct coal seams are described as existing in the Morien basin, nine in the Glace Bay basin, and six in both the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basin. Although known by different names in the several basins, a definite continuity of the seams has been established.

As a branch of Operations Research, decision making is a widely used application in both science and social sciences. There are many different methods developed to solve decision making problems in the literature. In this study, Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is performed for the selection of reclamation project selection in an open pit mine and the optimal solution of the problem is investigated. Different reclamation project alternatives are prepared for an open pit mine, which continues to its production activities in magnesite sector in Turkey. The data obtained from Magnesite Cooperation is used in the application of the method. A decision-making process is prepared as considering the project alternatives for the purpose of selecting the most suitable reclamation project. The entire criteria that affect the decision-making process are identified and transformed into a hierarchical structure. The problem is solved by using Fuzzy AHP method developed according to this structure. It is found that Fuzzy AHP is a method that may help decision-makers in solving different decision-making problems in mining.

"A description is given of a series of tests performed to determine the comparative effects which dynamic and static straining, in compression, have on the physical strength properties of mild steel and an aluminum alloy. The dynamic deformation was imposed during the passage of single stress pulses of about 100 micro-second duration. These pulses were recorded with strain gauges mounted near both ends of the specimen. The resulting records were analysed using a simple wave theory; there from the dynamic stress-strain curves for the respective metals were deter-mined and were then compared with the static stress-strain relation. The respective hardnesses of the metals after deformation are evaluates by means of static stress-strain curves in compression. The micro-structures of the metals before and after deformation are also shown. It is observed that dynamic de-formation considerably modifies the rate of strain hardening. This modified hardening appears to be persistent. The observed differences in physical strength properties and micro-structures are discussed in the light of the accepted dislocation theory for metals."

"The flotation performances and adsorption mechanisms of a-hydroxyoctyl phosphinic acid (HPA) to malachite, cassiterite and wolframite were investigated by micro-flotation tests and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The micro-flotation results indicated that compared with styrene phosphonic acid (SPA), diphosphonic acid (DPA), benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), HPA exhibited excellent collecting power to the three oxide ores. In addition, HPA showed superior selectivity against hematite, tourmaline, feldspar and quartz. The results of XPS analysis demonstrated that HPA reacts with active species (M) on metal oxide by formation of P-O-M or P-M bonds.INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, flotation has been the main process for separation and recovery of valuable minerals from complex ores (Mei, 2013; Zhou, 2014). One of the key requirements in flotation process is to increase selectively the surface hydrophobicity of the targeted minerals by surfactant (known as collector in flotation) adsorption so that these mineral particles can preferably attach air bubbles in a slurry or pulp (Bai, 2004; Hankins, 2004). To anchor a solid surface selectively, special functional group are designed to adjust the interaction between the surfactant and the active sites of solid surfaces (Wu, 2006; Huang, 2014).Organic phosphorous compounds have strong affinity toward metals or metal oxides because they form more stable metal complexes than metal carboxylates (Pazik, 2001; Zheng, 1998). In mineral engineering, phosphorous compounds have been exploited as metal extractants and flotation collectors (Alguacil, 2002; Sun, 2008). Ni (2012) and Zhang (1998) introduced diphosphonic acid (DPA) as an effective collector for flotation of fersmite and niobite. Liu (1999) found styryl phosphonic acid (SPA) was a superior collector for flotation recovery of finely disseminated rutile ores. Gruner and Bilsing (1992) thought SPA was one of the best collectors for flotation recovery of cassiterite which could obtain a high-grade concentrates of more than 40% with high recovery values. Bulatovic (1999) investigated the flotation performances of phosphoric acid ester (PAE) to perovskite, ilmenite and rutile and found that PAE was an impactful collector for selective flotation of titanium minerals from complex ores in the presence of petroleum sulfate. However, a-hydroxyoctyl phosphinic acid (HPA) as a flotation collector for recovery of titanium ores were hardly reported in the previous literatures."

"The Oka Carbonatite and Alkaline Complex is a Lower Cretaceous intrusive body of the Monteregian petrographic province. Carbonate rocks of various types, and associated alkaline rocks of the ijolite and okaite suites, are distributed in a double ring-dyke structure 4 Yi miles long by 1 1/2 miles across. Alnoite and alrioite breccia pipes intrude all rocks of the Complex and indicate, from inclusions, that a cover of Palaeozoic rocks existed at the time of emplacement.The results of radiometric, magnetic and gravity surveys of the Complex are compiled and discussed both with respect to the regional pattern and, locally, the bed-rock geology. The Complex is characterized by high-intensity anomalies.Exploration activities started during 1953, and mining operations began in 1961 on the property of St. Lawrence Columbium and Metals Corporation, at one time the world's largest producer of niobium concentrates. Because of the boudinaged and fractured nature of many of the rocks and the variability in grade of the ore minerals, the role of the mining geologist is both demanding and exacting. Rock types are varied and their mutual relation-ships ambiguous, the minerals are rare and complex, and close geological control of the ore is needed in the mine and in the mill. Closely spaced diamond drill holes are needed for mining control, and the ore-waste contact is defined mainly by assay results.In the exploration for 'carbonatites' in Eastern Canada, aeromagnetic surveys are judged to be the best exploration tool, followed in decreasing order by the search for circular structures on aerial photographs, regional gravity surveys and radiometric surveys."

Introduction It is the purpose of this paper to discuss a number of the metallurgical improvements in the technology of copper-nickel ore treatment which have been introduced during recent years in the plants of ?the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. In common with other ore treatment processes, the procedure for extracting nickel and copper is changing almost continuous! y. These changes are necessitated by reason of changes in ore grades and characteristics, rising material and labour charges, and the constant drive to maximize metal recovery and to minimize production costs. It is not possible to present a comprehensive list of all the changes made, and only a selected number of the improvements in the milling, smelting, and refining operations are covered. It should be clearly understood that some phases of the procedures described have been pioneered by others in kindred fields and due acknowledgment is given to their foresight and efforts. Articles have been published over the years describing the operations of the International Nickel Company plants and the reader is referred to the Engineering and Mining Journal, Vol. 130, No. 9, November 10th, 1930, and to the Canadian Mining Journal, Vol. 58, No. 11, November, 1937, and Vol. 67, No. 5, May, 1946. ABSTRACT This paper evaluates the potential of freeze-thaw dewatering using Albian mature fine tailings (MFT). Freezing tests were first performed to study the effect of freezing rate on dewatering efficiency. Lower freezing rate resulted in higher thawed solids content and shear strength. Subsequently, large strain consolidation tests were conducted to investigate consolidation behaviour and how it is affected by freeze-thaw. The consolidation behaviour was presented in terms of effective stress versus void ratio and permeability versus void ratio. The results can be used to predict the field behaviour of Albian MFT and optimize the application of freeze-thaw for MFT dewatering.

"Bioleaching uses iron and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria to extract base metals from sulfide minerals. As bioleaching involves breaking the iron-sulfur bonds by ferric attack, the biologically mediated rate of iron oxidation is recognized to play a key role in influencing the overall kinetics. In this study, we investigate the catalytic ability of an indigenous AMD culture for oxidizing Fe(II) in solution. This culture was subsequently adapted on pyrrhotite tailings (0.6% Ni) by gradually increasing the solids loading. Results from this study show that such an adaptation reduces the initial lag phase in the biotic oxidation of Fe(II), thereby allowing for a higher Ni extraction when compared to experiments with an un-adapted culture at a similar solids loading. The use of adapted cultures also helps to reduce the residence time for bioleaching of Ni from pyrrhotite tailings. INTRODUCTIONAs the world demand for pure base metals grows; the mining industry is increasingly faced with the burden of processing lower grade ores and mining waste streams in order to recover the occluded metal VALUES ((Watling, 2006). The extractive metallurgy of nickel from sulfide minerals focuses on using a combination of mineral processing, pyrometallurgical (smelting) and hydrometallurgical techniques to extract Ni from its ore bodies.Pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) is commonly found in association with pentlandite and chalcopyrite in sulfidic Ni ores, such as those found in Sudbury, Ontario, and in Russia, e.g. Norilsk. The vast majority of this pyrrhotite needs to be removed using mineral processing techniques, in order to minimize the Fe and S contents of the concentrates that proceed on to smelting. If all pyrrhotite were left in the concentrate, much more slag and SO2 would be produced, and the smelter throughput would be limited. Beneficiation of Ni sulfide ores leads to the rejection of unwanted constituents as mining wastes, which may still contain extractable amounts of Ni (Edgar Peek et al., 2010)."

The addition of precipitated silica greatly enhances chalcopyrite leaching in the presence of sodium chloride at moderate temperatures (65-90°C) in acid media with ferric ions as the oxidant. The beneficial effect increases with the increase in chloride concentration and temperature. The addition of sodium silicate and silica sand has no significant influence. The analysis of solubility data in acid/salt solutions indicates that the solubility of silica as Si(OH)4 as the dissolved species is controlled by the activity of water, as expected from the hydration theory. Kinetic analysis shows the trends that copper dissolution from chalcopyrite in the presence of precipitated silica with sodium chloride follows a shrinking sphere model indicating a chemically controlled surface reaction. The effect of temperature on copper dissolution in the presence of both precipitated silica and sodium chloride was also larger compared to the results in sodium chloride alone. The SEM analysis shows that chloride and silica facilitates the precipitation of sulfur on the surface of the silica particles rather than the chalcopyrite particles which avoids the blockage of the mineral surface and thus improves the leaching kinetics.

1N FLOTATION, copper sulphate is used universally for the activation of sphalerite and marmatite and, to some extent, for the activation of other minerals. The copper activated surface readily adsorbs standard collectors such as the xanthates and dialkyl dithiophosphates whereas untreated zir~ sulphide does not. With the host of reagents available, making a mineral float is seldom difficult. The problem is to achieve selective flotation. In zinc flotation, the great value of copper sulphate results from its ability to activate zinc sulphide preferentially to gangue minerals. At the Sullivan Concentrator of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited, the most abundant gangue mineral in the lead-zinc ore is pyrrhotite, and the zinc mineral is marmatite of somewhat variable zinc to iron ratio. For this Cominco study, selectivity between marmatite and pyrrhotite was therefore the most interesting aspect of copper sulphate activation.
