Mill circumferential speed, the number of passes of pulp through the grinding chamber, media type, size and filling ratio were investigated in an attempt to determine how to effectively grind copper concentrates in a stirred mill. The stirred mill product fineness was enhanced to some extent by decreasing media size, high media filling, and an increased number of passes of the pulp through the grinding chamber. Shape also plays a major role in grinding media effectiveness, with spherically shaped media producing a finer size. The fineness of the product increases with increasing power consumption but the method of energy transfer is very important in energy utilization. The effect of the mill parameters on copper flotation was evaluated. Copper recovery was influenced by grinding media size, mill speed and the number of pulp passes through the grinding chamber.

Over the past decade the use of BIM in the AEC industry has grown several fold and with it the number of standards available for implementing BIM. The ?National BIM Standard? by buildSmart Alliance, the ?Contractor Guide to BIM? by the Associated General Contractors of America, the ?BIM Project Execution Planning Guide and Templates? from Penn State University, the ?BIM Roadmap? by the US Army Corps of Engineers are some of the several BIM guidelines that are currently available to the AEC industry practitioners. Some of these guidelines are as comprehensive as defining BIM and the associated taxonomy while others are meant to be used on an individual project basis. From a contractor?s perspective one of the key benefits of using BIM is for the purpose of collision detection and coordination. This research has found that currently available guidelines do not address these issues adequately. For instance, the currently available guidelines do not allow the subcontractor to quickly communicate issues such as naming conventions and color schemes within the model, to the general contractor. Consequently general contractors and sub-contractors find themselves making changes to their BIM deliverables based on each other?s abilities and levels of adoption, apart from reason?s stemming from use of different software platforms. This paper describes how a group of contractors and subcontractors from Atlanta and Birmingham in the United States came together to create and adopt a ?Coordination Guidelines for Virtual Design and Construction?. These guidelines were specifically created with the purpose of streamlining the construction coordination process using BIM. This paper describes how the guidelines created differ from other guidelines currently available in the industry.

"The Madsen mine is in the southeastern part of Baird township, in Red Lake area, Ontario. It lies about 6 miles southwest of the town of Red Lake, with which it is connected by an all-weather road.The Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines Company was formed in March, 1935, to take over the holdings of the Falcon Gold and Jomac Gold syndicates. During 1935 an4 the early part of 1936 No. 1 shaft was sunk and drifts driven on four levels, all on a narrow quartz vein in a granite dyke.In July, 1936, the Austin zone was discovered about half a mile north of No. 1 shaft by Austin McVeigh, a prospector employed by the Company. Diamond drilling showed that the zone included an orebody worth development, and in 1937 No. 2 shaft was sunk, three levels opened up and sufficient ore outlined to justify the installation of a mill. Milling commenced in August, 1938, at the rate of 300 tons a day, which was later increased to 400 tons a day.The total production from 1938 to 1946 was 1,116,307 tons from which gold and silver having a value of $9,949,010 were recovered. The gold produced ranged from a minimum of 0.1910 oz. a ton in 1939 to a maximum of 0.2827 oz. in 1944. The average grade in 1946 was 0.2345 oz. to the ton."

Based on underground observations made in .the coal mines of the Dominion Coal Company Ltd., this paper deals with the stress phenomena in the approach roads and headways and in the gob areas associated with the longwall method of total extraction. The deformation of roadways during development and the deformation of roadways during the total extraction period is delineated and presented in graphical form .. Conclusions are made as to the feasibility of the introduction of the retreat method of longwall extraction in one of the colhenes. The importance of future studies are enumerated, especially. those pertaining to the determination .of the opti.m.um sizes of protective pillars and to increasing the efficiency of the current methods of artificial roadway support.

"The Eastern Abitibi Sub province (Quebec segment), contains two main types of gold deposits: the common quartz-vein type and the rare pyritic type. Both occur in areas dominated by volcanic rocks and are spatially associated with major fault zones.Quartz-vein gold deposits consist of simple to complex networks of quartz-carbonate-pyrite veins in reverse shear zones and extensional fractures. They occur in areas dominated by mafic volcanic rocks and are commonly associated with small syn- to late-tectonic porphyritic felsic intrusions. Associated alteration, which postdates peak metamorphism, is dominated by carbonatization, sericitization and pyritization of the wallrocks. These deposits formed late in the geologicalevolution of the Abitibi.Pyritic gold deposits range from deformed massive sulphide lenses to zones of syntectonic pyrite-rich veinlets and associated pyrite disseminations. These deposits occur in environments dominated by felsic volcanic rocks that are typically converted to sericite schists near the deposits. The associated pre-metamorphic aluminous alteration is now characterized by metamorphic sericite, andalusite, kyanite and chloritoid, overprinted by a late retrogression of alumino- silicates. These deposits probably represent deformed volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, but the timing of gold introduction in these is not fully understood.The differences in geological attributes reflect significant differences in the genesis these deposits: the pyritic deposits probably have a multistage genesis, including a pre-tectonic stage, in contrast to a single stage late-tectonic genesis for the quartz-vein deposits.RESUMELa partie Est de la Sous-Province de l’Abitibi( segment québécois) renferme deux types de gites d' or: ceux de type ""veine de quartz"" et ceux, plus rares, de type ""pyriteux"". Ces deux types se trouvent dans des secteurs particulièrement riches en roches volcaniques et mantrent une association spatiale avec des zones de failles majeures.Les gites de type ""veine de quartz"" correspondent à des réseaux de complexité variable de veines de quartz-carbonate-pyrite se développant dans des zones de cisaillement inverse et des fractures de tension. Ils se concentrent dans les régions dominées par des roches volcaniques mafiques et s’associent fréquemment à de petites intrusions porphyriques felsiques syn- a tardi-tectoniques. L’altération associée ace type de glte est postérieure à la phase majeure du métamorphisme et consiste en une carbonatisation, une sericitisation et une pyritisation des épontes. La mise en place de ces gites est tardive par rapport à l'évolution géologique de l'Abitibi.Les gites d' or de type pyriteux consistent en des lentilles de sulfures massifs déformes, des zones d' abondantes veinules pyrite uses syntectoniques, et des zones de pyrite disséminée. Ces gites se retrouvent dans des empilements contenant surtout des roches volcaniques felsiques qui sont transformées en schiste à séricine pres des gisements. L’altération a l’umineuse pre-metamorphique associée a ce type de glte a donné naissance, lors du metamorphisme regional, a la sericite, a 'andal ousite, a Ia lcyanite et au chloritoi""de; par la suite, les alumino-silicates ont été affectes par une alteration retrograde tardive. Ces gites representent probablement des depOts de sulfures massifs volcan gènes déformes, mais la chronologie de la mise en place de l'or dans ceux-ci est encore mal comprise.Les caractéristiques géologiques propres à chacun de ces types de gites reflètent des conditions de formation différentes: le type ""pyriteux"" montre une histoire génétique polyphasée, incluant une étape pre-tectonique alors que le type ""veine de quartz"" s’est développe au cours d’une seule phase tardi-tectonique."

"As mining has evolved over a century, so are the challenges associated with mining. In addition, the stakeholder expectations are growing along with challenges associated with highly complex mine permitting processes and changing demographics of mining jurisdictions. The dynamic metals market adds to these challenges impacting the long term development and sustainability of mining projects.These challenges are compelling mining companies to look at various innovations with an integrated approach focusing on meeting the needs of various stakeholders. Mining companies are slowly tapping into some successful concepts that have transformed other industries such as manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceuticals along with oil and gas.This paper provides an overview of various innovations and technology developments in mineral processing that have shaped the current mining industry. A glimpse of the present and future challenges in mining is also presented. An integrated approach to problem solving involving various stakeholders is gaining momentum and this has been reflected in this paper. Various developments that are being pursed in mineral processing focusing on a change in the existing mining paradigm are also presented in this paper.INTRODUCTIONAs mining is evolving, so are the challenges associated with mining. Introduction The property of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company is on the east side of Howe sound, some twenty miles north of-Vancouver. The camp is served by two settlements, one at Britannia Mines townsite, approximately three miles from the water's edge at an altitude of 2,100 feet, the other at Britannia Beach, on Howe sound. The first discovery of copper ore on the property was made in 1888, but it was not until 1905 that production started. From that year until the end of 1944, production had totalled 732,414,420 pounds of copper and 261,126 ounces of gold from six orebodies, known as the Victoria, Empress, No. 5, Fairview, Bluff, and Jane. No. 8 orebody, with which this paper is concerned, was discovered in 1937 by diamond drilling from the 4100 level, some 300 feet above sea level. Development of this orebody to the end of 1944 had included the sinking of a shaft from the 4000 to the 5250 level, and a limited amount of stoping. This work has delimited the orebody from the 3800 to the 4950 level and has indicated upwards of 1,000,000 tons of copper-zinc-gold ore. It is planned to commence production in the near future, while continuing exploration of the orebody at depth.

At Dillinger Hüttenwerke/Germany steel production of grades for linepipe applications especially for sour service has a long tradition. The BOF process after replacement of the vessels is optimized by a newly developed lime addition model and variations in lance tip geometry. Equipped with three state-of-the-art VOD tank degassers metallurgical requirements of lowest contents of e. g. sulphur, nitrogen and hydrogen can be achieved. Three continuous casting machines of vertical bending type with solid core even improve already high levels of cleanliness. The vertical part corresponds to the metallurgical length of 12 to 15 m and therefore assures a maximum of cleanliness after solidification before bending. Slab thickness up to 400 mm can be produced with model controlled dynamic soft reduction. The accurate alignments of the casters assure minimized segregation and microporosity. Surface and internal cracks can be avoided by special cooling, bending and straightening strategies.

"Abstract - The Little Falls member of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation is situated in the northern part of the Brunswick Belt of the Bathurst Mining Camp and has been interpreted as the distal equivalent of proximal tuffaceous rocks that host the stratiform Brunswick No. 12 and No. 6 Pb-Zn massive sulfide deposits. It comprises fine-grained, greenish-gray tuffaceous sandstone in the lower part, and coarse-grained, crystal-rich tuffaceous sandstone in the upper part. Petrographic evidence suggests that these rocks have a turbiditic origin. The Little Falls member is underlain by the Vallée Lourdes member, mainly composed of relatively shallow-water calcareous rocks, and is conformably overlain by Mn-rich sedimentary rocks, mainly red argillites that host the Tetagouche Falls Mn-(Fe) deposit. All these rocks are considered to belong to the Nepisiguit Falls Formation, part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Whole-rock geochemical data from the fine-grained tuffaceous sandstone and coarse-grained tuffaceous sandstone indicate that the two units of the Little Falls member are distinct. Zr and TiO2 contents, and total rare earth element (REE) values are higher in the coarse-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.040, average SREE = 247 ppm, n = 6) than in the fine-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.048, average SREE = 158 ppm, n = 17), which can be attributed to the variation in crystal content between the two units. Both units are HREE-enriched and have elevated La/Yb relative to the typical Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Overall, the geochemical data combined with evidence from the bounding units suggest that the Little Falls member was deposited in relatively shallow water, possibly in a near-arc environment. The relationship of volcanic facies within the Nepisiguit Falls Formation and the geochemistry of these facies indicate strongly that fine grained, reworked tuffaceous rocks, regardless of whether they are the distal equivalents of proximal tuffaceous rocks, are not associated with the major ore-bearing horizons of the Bathurst Mining Camp. Les teneurs en Zr et en TiO2, ainsi que la teneur totale en Éléments des Terres Rares (ÉTR) sont plus élevées dans l’unité à grains grossiers (Zr/TiO2 moyen = 0.040, SREE moyen = 247 ppm, n = 6) que dans l’unité à grains fins (Zr/TiO2 moyen = 0.048, SREE moyen = 158 ppm, n = 17), ce qui pourrait s’expliquer par la variation de la quantité de cristaux dans chacune de ces deux unités. The flotation separation of salt type calcium minerals is problematic, due to the similarities in their formation properties and the same active Ca2+ related site for interaction with anionic collectors and similar physicochemical characteristics such as solubility, point of zero charge, surface speciation, Ca-site density. The work was performed to achieve effective and selective separation of the calcium-minerals using pure minerals samples: four calcite, two fluorite, and two apatite samples. The effect of pure and mixing anionic collectors such as oleic and linoleic acid to different ratio (2:1; 1:1; 1:2) as well as the role of nonionic collectors on the selective separation of Ca minerals were studied. All flotation tests were performed in self-aspirated flotation cell. The results obtained with the blend of anionic collectors with the molar ratio of 2:1 show a separation between apatite and calcite at pH 5 and a ratio 1:2 at pH 9. The enhancing of separation contrast using the sodium silicate as a depressant for calcite and apatite is also examined as a function of oleate/linoleate ratio. Additionally, this paper discusses the enhancing of the selective separation of Ca minerals when anionic collectors were blended with nonionic reagents. The surface reactions in aqueous mineral suspensions and the adsorption of anionic collectors blended with nonionic reagents were studied by FTIR spectroscopy. An unexpected synergistic effect was observed for some ratios between anionic and nonionic reagents. The mixture of fatty acids and nonionic reagent showed very high flotation efficiency in comparison with fatty acid alone for the flotation of an igneous low-grade phosphate ore.

A property based dynamic model of flotation was built and validated for training purposes. The model is based on the work of the AMIRA P9 project. The recovery of each particle with composition and size is calculated in a given simulation step. The model takes into account machine and operational parameters such as air flowrate and froth height. The model was created using fullscale test data on Pyhlisalmi Cu-Zn-pyrite ore with flotation kinetics of multiphase particles determined. Simulation and validation shows that model can predict the dynamic behavior of the process accurately enough for training purposes.

"GeneralGIANT ORE is complex, with the gold values for the most part occurring in extremely close association with arsenopyrite, stibnite, jamesonite, and a wide group of antimonial minerals locally termed 'the grey minerals'. Pyrite is the most abundant of the sulphide minerals• and minor quantities of chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite also occur. Pyrrhotite has been found in some sections of the mine, but to date none of it has been nickeliferous. Native gold occurs in varying amounts throughout the ore bodies.In 1944, ore dressing investigations were commenced on diamond-drill core rejects and samples of surface outcrop ore. Results soon indicated that treatment to produce satisfactory recovery of the gold values would involve fine grinding to 80-85 per cent minus 200 mesh, recovery of free gold by jigs, followed by flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrate, and subsequent cyanidation of the calcine. Proceeding from this information, the flow-sheet was prepared, plant design worked out, equipment purchased, and construction of the treatment plant commenced in May, 1947.The crushing, grinding, and flotation units of the plant were rushed to completion and commenced operation on May 12th, l.948, at 225 tons of ore per day. This rate was maintained until January 27th, 1949, when the Allis-Chalmers roaster and cyanide plants were completed and commenced operation. During the period May 12th, 1948, to January 27th, 1949, gold recovered by amalgamation was the sole source of revenue. Flotation concentrate was stockpiled pending the completion of the Allis~Chalmers roaster and cyanide plants."

UV-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and vibrating tube densimetry have been used in our laboratory to determine equilibrium constants of aqueous species at temperatures as high as 325 °C. The UV-visible and Raman spectra of solutions containing metal complexes and ionized acids or bases can be used to yield formation constants by applying curve fitting methods to resolve the contribution of each species. Colorimetric pH indicators identified by Johnston and coworkers at the University of Texas (Austin) provide an alternative means of determining ionization constants and the pH of complex mixtures. High precision density measurements over the same range yield standard partial molar volumes, which are key parameters for "equations of state" for aqueous species. Examples are given for the copper-ammonia system, simple carboxylic acids, and the iron-sulphate system.

This paper reports two aspects of reactivity of complex Ni-Cu sulphide ores: variations that result from stockpiling of a nickel-copper sulphide ore in the Sudbury area and its consequences on flotation behaviour, especially in terms of metal losses to scavenger tails. In relation to the first aspect, self-heating characteristics of the stockpile were carried out by monitoring the internal temperatures of the stockpile. Six heat sensors were installed with respect to external conditions in local weather during a 7-month period. Stockpile temperatures were mainly influenced by ambient temperature with some retardation effects. The maximum temperature recorded in the stockpile was 44 °C. Samples taken at the beginning and at the end of stockpiling were tested to assess variations in behaviour of the rougher-scavenger flotation. Relative to the fresh ore, nickel and copper losses in flotation of the stockpile fines were 5.0 and 3.6 %, respectively. The fresh ore yields concentrates with higher nickel grades due to differential flotation behaviour of pentlandite and pyrrhotite relative to the stockpile fines, which exhibit a truly bulk flotation behaviour at least during the first 3 stages.

The deformation and recrystallisation of magnesium yttrium alloys containing 0.23, 0.84 and 2.71wt% yttrium and commercially pure magnesium extrusion has been investigated at temperatures between 200 and 350°C. The alloys were produced as billets 7.5 cm diameter, solution treated at 525 °C for 8 h and extruded into 3 cm diameter bar at 390°C. Channel die compression was employed to deform the samples at a strain rate of 1x10-3s-1. For the 0.23 wt% yttrium alloy and the pure magnesium, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurred at all temperatures and the amount of DRX increased as the temperature was raised. In the alloys containing 0.84 and 2.71 wt% yttrium DRX was almost completely suppressed at all temperatures. The absence of DRX in the 0.84 and 2.71 wt% yttrium alloys was accompanied by a decrease in the ductility, except at 350°C the highest deformation temperature. It was observed that this increase in ductility was accompanied by a reduction in deformation twinning and the initiation of pyramidal slip. This work highlights the important role that DRX plays in enhancing the ductility of magnesium alloys.

"Nineteen streams in the copper and zinc flotation units of the concentrator of the Matagami Division of Noranda Inc. have been sampled f or particle size distributions, chemical assays, and gold and silver contents in each particle size interval. The data are upgraded by the mass balance package BILMA T. These results, in conjunction with microprobe analyses, are used to quantify the silver losses in the copper cleaning flotation stages and to determine how over-all silver and three silver-bearing minerals are recovered in the plant final products. Pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores can be conducted on ores with high carbonate content using just water or water with alkaline reagents to promote fast kinetics, and suppress the formation of elemental sulphur and CO2. In this work, a fundamental study was conducted to explore the silica-pyrite interaction in the presence of calcium and sodium carbonate. It was found that an alkaline environment increases the pyrite decomposition kinetics on one hand, but on the other dissolves silica, which encapsulates the dissolving pyrite thus hindering ultimately its complete decomposition.

"This paper summarizes research that was done at the Mines Branch, Ottawa, to evaluate samples of phosphogypsum for gypsum products manufacture. The samples were from phosphate fertilizer facilities at: Port Maitland, Ontario ; Valleyfield, Quebec; and Fort Saskatchewan and Redwater, Alberta. All samples were wet-screened, washed, filtered and calcined in a laboratory kettle at atmospheric pressure. Tests were also made at higher pressures in a small autoclave. The gypsum and resulting hemi-hydrate, being acidic, were treated before, during and after calcining with various bases. The hemi-hydrate products were checked for time of set, compressive strength and bond to gypsum wallboard paper. The results of this study indicate that phosphogypsum from each of the sources investigated has potential as a substitute for mined gypsum in gypsum products manufacture. Pilot-scale testing is recommended to confirm that the product would be satisfactory for the manufacture of plaster products on a commercial basis."

Introduction The operations of The Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, L1mited, have always been concerned with the mining of low-grade copper ores. In the fifty years of this Company's existence, nearly 60,000,000 tons of such material has been successfully mined and treated. During these years, many changes in mining practice took place. However, at Copper Mountain, due to the large tonnages of very low grade material, it was realized that something more than changing mining methods would have to take place if these low-grade orebodies were to be mined at a profit and the Company and. its employees enjoy many years of successful operation and employment. Production costs were mounting commensurately with rising taxes and the increasing cost of supplies, labour, freight, and smelting, while the value of the product on the market was not increasing in price to compensate for the higher costs of production. A survey of the mineable ore in 1944 indicated that, of the 12,000,000 tons in the reserves, only 3,500,000 tons was now profitable ore. This reduction in the commercial ore reserves was a serious matter, as it meant that the mine had only two years of life at the profitable shipp1ng rate of 4,800 tons per day. Further, the location in the mine of the orebodies making up the 3,500,000 tons was not suitable for such high production.
