The rate of liquid copper deoxidation during top blowing of reducing flames has been investigated using a high capacity thermogravimetric unit at 1200 °C. For 1 kg copper samples, it was observed that the rate of deoxidation was proportional to the flow rate of the reducing reagent (H2 or CO). Under similar experimental conditions, it was found that H2 is more effective than CO even though both have similar thermodynamic potential to deoxidize liquid copper. The rate of deoxidation of liquid copper with reducing 0 2/CH4 flames was measured for 0 2/CH4 molar ratios of 1.5 to 2. The deoxidation rate depends on the 0 2/CH4 ratio and decreases as it approaches the stoichiometric ratio (02/CH4 = 2). Estimation of the rate of deoxidation of liquid copper with top blowing flames based on the thermodynamic composition ofH2 and CO in the product gases, agrees well with measured values.

"With growing international interest in mineral resources in Central Africa, the importance of transparency in resource development cannot be overemphasized. Without transparency, the region cannot maximize revenues from resources. Although the importance of transparency is beginning to be recognized, many factors can hold back the gains of transparency from resulting in real economic development for the countries involved. This paper reviews current financial, economic, and development literature for Central African countries, with a focus on identifying underlying conditions and specific transactional conditions impacting the effectiveness of transparency in mining development in the region.RÉSUMÉ En raison de l’intérêt international croissant pour les ressources minérales en Afrique centrale, l’importance de la transparence dans le développement des ressources ne peut pas être surestimée. Sans transparence, la région ne peut pas maximiser les revenus tirés de ses ressources. Bien que l’importance de la transparence commence à être reconnue, plusieurs facteurs peuvent freiner les gains acquis de la transparence à produire un véritable développement économique pour les pays touchés. "Hydraulic transportation efficiency and production optimization are considerations in the surface extraction of Athabasca oil sand deposits. To reduce the dependence on haul trucks, it is possible to extend the hydraulic transport system to production faces using a mobile at-face slurry system (AFSS). The flexible arrangement of connected pipelines transports slurried minerals from the mining face to the processing plant. An experimentally verified mathematical model indicates the friction loss of oil sand slurry associated with the AFSS. Laboratory-scale testing enables extended analyses for examining pipeline slurry transport in an oil sands environment.RÉSUMÉ L’optimisation de l’efficacité du transport hydraulique et de la production sont des considérations importantes dans le domaine de l’exploitation à ciel ouvert des gisements de sables bitumineux de l’Athabasca. Afin de réduire la dépendance envers les camions de transport, on envisage d’étendre le système de transport hydraulique aux fronts de taille à l’aide d’un système mobile de transport des matériaux sous forme de boue à partir du front de taille (AFSS, de l’anglais at-face slurry system). L’organisation flexible des conduites reliées permet le transport de minéraux à l’état de boue du front d’exploitation jusqu’à l’usine de traitement. Un modèle mathématique vérifié de manière expérimentale indique la perte de charge par frottement des schlamms provenant du traitement des sables bitumineux associée à l’utilisation de l’AFSS. Des essais en laboratoire permettent de mener des analyses approfondies portant sur le transport de boues dans des conduites dans un environnement de sables bitumineux. INTRODUCTIONObjectives and scope of studyThe at-face slurry system (AFSS) concept has become a competitive means for materials handling to optimize haulage system efficiency and cost. The mobile and flexible arrangement of the AFSS introduces a unique set of hydraulic transport problems. This paper will focus on developing the mathematical models governing the friction and head losses within the AFSS concept.Background of the problemLarge-capacity shovels and dump trucks are increasingly used for excavation, loading, and hauling in the operation of surface mining. Production cost and efficiency optimization are demanded during the Athabasca oil sands (Alberta, Canada) mining process to secure North America’s energy supply. Increasing haulage distances, rugged terrain, and a constrained mine environment are conditions that will reduce the effectiveness of the shovel-truck haulage system (Frimpong, Szymanski, & Changirwa, 2003). In such conditions, the tire heat index and weight, distance, and time limits for truck haulage can be exceeded, simultaneously creating extreme tire wear and high maintenance costs. In addition to low production cost and equipment effectiveness, a mining environment also requires efficient waste-material recycling and distribution. Waste materials need to be recycled from the processing plant to a new destination such as a tailings dam, or replaced in mined-out areas such as backfill. The Athabasca oil sands configuration and location characteristics result in a mining environment that would benefit from flexible pipelines for constant production and an efficient waste-material recycling process."

Methods have been developed for processing and analyzing reflected solar radiation data obtained by Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper multispectral scanner. Spatial resolution for the Landsat series satellites is 30 meters per side per pixel. Materials on the Earth?s surface absorb or reflect different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum depending on their physical and chemical properties and, therefore, typically have characteristic spectral ?signatures?. Using these signatures, environmental parameters such as surface water and vegetation may be identified and analyzed. Principal advantages of the satellite image method for environmental monitoring include: a relatively long historic period beginning in 1985 for which information is available, the reliable numerical basis for the results, and the ability to assemble a historic environmental baseline and provide on-going monitoring for large or remote areas where standard monitoring methods may not be practical. However, because the long-term continued operation of Landsat 5 is problematic due to the age of the equipment, QuickBird and IKONOS satellite images were processed to determine if the two systems are sufficiently similar in their results to allow continuing monitoring using QuickBird data. The QuickBird satellite was launched in 2001 and collects the same visible and near infrared spectral bandwidths as Landsat 5, allowing for equivalent process algorithms for QuickBird, IKONOS, and Landsat 5 data. Spatial resolution for the QuickBird images is 2.4 meter per side, allowing for more detailed characterization of the land surface; spatial resolution for the IKONOS images is 4 meter per side. Because of several differences between the satellite systems, including degradation of the Landsat 5 sensor, it is necessary to calibrate QuickBird and IKONOS results to the Landsat results to verify similarity. Recent images from the satellite systems have been processed and results have been compared to determine the validity of comparing Landsat 5 and QuickBird/IKONOS images so that these newer data can be used reliably in the future instead of Landsat 5 data. Results from this comparison are presented in this paper and suggest that analyses for vegetation using the two satellite systems are comparable, and that little calibration is required. Results from comparison of surface water results from the two systems are less comparable and is currently being investigated by the authors.

Open pit optimization forms the basis of mine design, production planning and construction of mine facilities. The negative effects of this phase may include substantial reductions in ore recoveries, relocation of waste dumps and surface infrastructure, extraction of unwanted waste, with a cumulative effect on mine value reductions. As a result, this area has received significant research focus using linear and dynamic programming, heuristic, genetic and stimulation algorithms and the graph theory. These algorithms are derived from rigorous mathematical models, but they are built on the assumption that all the periodic production capacities are extracted at the time of analysis. This assumption weakens the models because mining occurs over significant time period. In order to develop a comprehensive model that accounts for the timing of material extraction, the current models, which are built on the economic block value (EBV) concept, must be modified to account for time. In this paper, the authors develop a model of the optimization problem using the 2-D Lerchs-Grossmann?s optimization algorithm. This model is used to investigate the effect of periodic discounting on the optimal pit layout design by designing an integrated pit optimiser (IPO) that incorporates ?production scheduling?. IPO uses the ensuing discounted economic block value (DEBV) as a basis for the pit optimisation process. The time-dependent model is compared with a time-independent model. The results show that discounting has no effect on the optimal pit contour although the reported pit value is overstated if the EBVs are used instead of the DEBV. The authors, however, believe that this conclusion may not be general and could have been influenced by the nature of ore body geometry and the proposed mining strategy.

The Kidd operation mines roughly 10 000 tpd of copper and zinc ore from underground and employs about 700 personnel. In the late summer and fall of 1997, major movements in the proximity of the east wall of the Kidd open pit had been observed. The Kidd pit had been mined from 1965 to 1977 to depths of 260 m (850 ft), followed by subsequent mining by underground methods to current depths in excess of 1830 m (6800 ft). The No. 1 Mine (2600 Level to pit bottom) is approximately 90% extracted, with most of the remaining reserve between 2000 and 2500 levels. Although initial concerns centred on the stability of the pit walls, the potential ramifications of the movements to the underground were recognized and measures were implemented to ensure the safety of personnel as well as to minimize the potential damage to existing operations. In late October, damage to underground operations was observed as deep as the 2000 Level. In the final assessment, the global mobilized mass was a “wedge”-shaped hangingwall block extending from surface to about 610 m (2000 ft) below surface. The “wedge” boundaries are defined by a fault and shear zone which have continuous lengths in excess of 1070 m (3500 ft); its base by shearing through the host rock mass; and its eastern face by deep tension cracks (Fig. 1). Mined and filled excavations at the western face of the “wedge” allowed mobilization of a mass in excess of 30 M tonnes. Movements in excess of 75 cm (30 in.) per day were recorded on the surface stations that preceded the complete shutdown of operations on October 29, 1997. The evaluations in the days following the shut-down were centred on mitigation of immediate and future possible negative impacts on infrastructure and mining of the remaining No. 1 Mine reserves while ensuring the safety of the operators. This effort required the rapid assessment of the potential damage of the block movement on underground infrastructure, stope access, drainage and ventilation, as well as airblast potential due to the falling of a large block into the pit near the ventilation intake at the base of the pit. These assessments were presented in a previous paper (Seldon et al., 1999). In total, the lateral movement of the block on the ground surface was over 4.3 m (14 ft). This paper describes the detailed studies performed to understand the failure mechanism and to assess the impacts on future mining in No. 1 Mine.

Stellite-6 coatings were formulated on two Ni-base superalloys, namely Superni 75 and Superni 600, by a shrouded plasma-spray process, and the oxidation behaviour of these coatings has been investigated in air and in an aggressive environment of Na2SO4- 60%V2O5. Accelerated oxidation tests were conducted in a silicon-carbide tube furnace under cyclic conditions at an elevated temperature of 900°C for 50 cycles. Each cycle consisted of 1 h heating and 20 min cooling in air. A thermogravimetric technique was used to approximate the oxidation kinetics. The corrosion scales were characterised by XRD, SEM/EDAX and EPMA analysis. It has been observed that the coatings nearly followed the parabolic rate law of oxidation. Overall weight gain conceived in air was just 51% of that in the aggressive environment in the case of coated Superni 75, whereas in case of coated Superni 600, the cumulative weight gain in air was found to be one-third of that in the Na2SO4-60% V2O5 atmosphere. Furthermore, the coating showed very good adherence to both of the substrates during the course of air oxidation, whereas some superficial cracks were observed near the edges of the specimens during the molten salt induced oxidation. XRD analysis revealed the presence of phase-like CoO, CoCr2O4 and Cr2O3 in the oxide scales, which are reported be protective against high-temperature oxidation. The XRD results were further supported by SEM/EDAX and EPMA.

Les essais de la séparation du stérile et du minerai effectués en milieu dense sur quelques types de la minéralisation d’or, ont démontré les deux possibilités qu’offre cette technique:• Dans le cas d’un minerai riche, il a été possible de séparer la part importante du toutvenant (minerai dilué contenant le minerai et le stérile) provenant de la dilution, tout en ayant un taux de récupération élevé (supérieur à 96%).• Dans le cas d’un minerai ayant une teneur sub-économique à cause d’une dilution importante, il est possible de produire un concentré ayant une teneur économique à l’entrée de l’usine de traitement, en éliminant une partie du tout-venant.En plus la séparation du stérile peut accroître, en outre, la rentabilité de l’exploitation minière, car le fait d’éliminer la partie de stérile le plus tôt possible diminue certains coûts (transport, traitement et autres). On conclue que la pré-concentration du minerai (séparation du stérile et du minerai) est probablement une seule solution actuellement étudiée qui diminue l’impact environnemental de la mine, sans avoir des conséquences négatives sur la rentabilité de l’exploitation souterraine."

"This paper describes the results of full-scale testing of several multi-layered wood crib configurations that were tested in the Bureau of Mines mine roof simulator in cooperation with the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory and Cape Breton Development Corporation of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Nine different crib configurations currently being used as wood packwall supports for advancing longwall applications in Canada were evaluated. Configuration parameters understudy included the aspect ratio (height-to-width relationship) and percentage of solid material used in the crib construction. Test results and generalized wood crib behaviour are discussed in detail. Recommendations are made concerning crib constructions to maximize strength and stability. A cost benefit analysis of multi-layered wood crib configurations is made. A comparison of laboratory results and underground observations of several wood packwall supports in the Sydney coalfield suggest in situ load capacity is less than that measured in laboratory testing. Reasons for the apparent decrease of in situ load bearing capability are described.IntroductionA cooperative effort was undertaken by the U.S. Bureau of Mines with the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) and the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL) to evaluate the behaviour of gateside packing materials used in advancing longwall mining applications in the Sydney coalfield. As part of this effort, full-scale tests were conducted on wood packwall supports in the Bureau's 3-million pound (13.3 MN) active load frame.Nine different pack configurations were evaluated as part of this study. The wood packwall supports were multi-layered crib constructions from 6 in. (0.15 m) by 6 in. (0.15 m) cross section timbers using timber s 30 in. (0.75 m) and 60 in. (1.5 m) in length . The percentage of solid material in the crib constructions varied as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. A summary of crib constructions is provided in Table 1."

Full-scale rupture tests were conducted on 508 mm (20 in) diameter API X-60 5.7 mm wall thickness pipes containing either axial semi-elliptical cracks or simulated corrosion defects with equivalent depths ranging from 20 to 60 percent thickness. In the case of the cracks, the failure pressures were predicted with reasonable accuracy when considering a level 3 failure assessment diagram (FAD) procedure based on API 579, as compared to level 2 FAD, since the mechanical properties were known. In both cases, the accuracy improved for shallower cracks. Considering simulated corrosion defects, the RSTRENG approach provided more reliable results on predicting the collapse pressure. For a similar depth and profile, the cracked pipes failed at a lower pressure than those containing simulated corrosion defects of equivalent depth.

"The limited development and application of new technologies to narrow-vein mining is currently impeding progress in the industry to a point where productivity, working conditions and operating costs have reached a critical stage in many Canadian mines.In an effort to foster the emergence and application of new technologies, Université Laval, together with other organizations, has carried out a R&D project focussed on the need of identifying new development pos5ibilities and of facilitating the transfer of technology in matters related to underground mining methods and machinery.The first phase of the study consisted of an in-depth assessment of current practices and problems in narrow-vein mining. The second phase was a state-of-the-art survey of mining methods and equipment, together with proposed modifications and innovations. The third phase of the project concerns the experimental development as well as the principal application of various proposed technologies.This paper presents an overview of the organizational, technical and strategic considerations which guided the University group and it serves as well to introduce a newly-published brochure, entitled ""Underground Mining Techniques of Vein Deposits"", which summarizes such work to date. More specifically, a perspective of technological developments applicable to narrow-vein mining is presented."

"The Powell mine is in western Quebec about 2 miles northwest of the adjoining towns of Noranda and Rouyn. It is the original discovery of the area, its gold-bearing quartz vein having been discovered in 1922. Considerable work was done on this vein by several companies and discontinued because the grade, when gold was $20 an ounce, was too low for profitable extraction. Between 1922 and 1924 an inclined shaft was sunk to 225 feet and drifts were driven 240 feet on the 100-foot level.In 1929, due to the discovery and development of the Horne mine at Noranda, interest was revived in the property. Sulphide deposits of the disseminated and vein types were explored on the Powell claims. On the B copper 'showing', a vertical shaft, now known as the 'old copper shaft', was sunk to ·a depth of 167 feet and 300 feet of lateral work was carried out on the 150-foot level. As no orebody was discovered this work was discontinued.In 1933 the present company, Powell Rouyn Gold Mines, Limited, was formed and the gold-bearing quartz veins were again tested by drilling and trenching. In 1936, the price of gold having risen to $35 an ounce, operations were resumed. Since then the inclined shaft (No. 1) has been deepened to 500 feet, a second shaft (No. 2, vertical) on the main quartz vein has been sunk to 2,630 feet, and ll; shallow vertical shaft (No. 3) on the same vein but in the south claim has been sunk to 500 feet.Lateral work now approximates 9 miles, and to November 15th, 1946, 1,685,674 tons of ore, which averaged 0.129 oz. gold per ton and 73.6 per cent. Si02, had been extracted."

"The San Antonio gold mine, in the Archean Rice Lake Greenstone Belt, was in continuous production from 1932 to 1968, during which period the mine yielded 1.35 million ounces (41 985 kg) of gold and 195,000 ounces (6065 kg) of silver from 4.88 million tons (4.44 Mt) of ore for average grades of 0.28 ounces per ton (9.0 g/t) gold and 0.04 ounces per ton (1.3 g/t) silver. After the 1968 closure, several publications appeared implying that gold grade of ore decreased with increasing depth.Recent observations by the authors show that the relatively low grades in the middle levels of the mine are controlled geologically. However, the reduced average are grade in the lower levels of the mine was due to inadequate mining control that led to a high level of dilution. The similarity of geological factors such as vein styles within structural domains, variations in mining control, recent ore muck sampling results and lithogeo chemical profiles all indicate the similarity of ore in both upper and lower levels.Strict mining control should yield improved grades of gold for future production from the lower levels at San Antonio, in contrast with the production grades of the late 19605that represented extensively diluted ore. High-quality production records are an essential component in re-evaluating a past producer, particularly where workings are accessible. Poorly founded conclusions which cannot be checked by access to workings can have a negative impact on the evaluation procedure."

"This paper presents the result of the research done on the effect of temperature on the dilatancy of rocks from the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC), where the South African Platinum mines are located. The BIC has higher virgin rock temperature (VRT) than the gold mines of the ‘Witwatersrand Basin Complex’. If the platinum mines advance to ultra-deep levels as the gold mines, since the Merensky Reef has been reported to extend beyond 5km, then the virgin rock temperature at 5 km below surface would be approximately 140oC. Hence, there is a need for the investigation of rock behaviour at high temperatures. Five different rock types (norite, leuconorite, mottled anorthosite, pyroxenite and chromitite) were tested in a 2600 kN servo-controlled multi-purpose triaxial testing machine. The tests were done at a constant strain rate of 5 x 10-1 S-1 and a confining pressure of 10 MPa within temperature range of 20 °C (ambient temperature) to 140 °C. The results show a general strength reduction and increasing dilation angles with increasing temperatures. The results also demonstrate that dilation angle is close to the internal friction angle at lower temperatures; however, they are greater at higher temperatures.INTRODUCTIONMany challenges are faced with increasing depth of mining in underground mines. The most obvious are heat, in-situ stresses and those associated with logistics. Issues related to underground heat have mainly focused on the side effect of heat on workers' health, increasing production costs as a result of higher cost of ventilation. The effect of increasing temperature with increasing depth on the behavior of rock has not been given much consideration. Generally, gold mines in South Africa are deeper than the platinum mines but the latter have higher temperature gradient, which makes the platinum mines to be warmer at similar mining depths. Although the study of the effect temperature on the behaviour of rock can be beneficial to both gold and platinum mines, the focus of the research is limited to the platinum mines because of their higher temperature gradient. Donoghue (2004) stated that the virgin rock temperatures (VRT) and air temperatures increase with depth, due to the geothermal gradient and auto-compression, that is, compression of air by its own weight."

In ferronickel (Fe-Ni) production from oxidized nickeliferous ores, mechanical losses of ferronickel in the slag are reduced by magnetic separation. Slag from the electric furnaces (E/Fs) contains 0.16% Ni. Its magnetic separation gave a pre-concentrate with 0.76% Ni, weighing approximately 6.5% of the feed. Nickel recovery was 29.7%. This pre-concentrate was then treated in a second (concentration) plant. Concentration treatment involves screening, crushing and magnetic separation. A pre-concentrate with 0.76% Ni gave a magnetic concentrate with 2.58% Ni and a non¬magnetic part with 0.35% Ni. Smelting of the non-magnetic part without the addition of a reduction agent in a laboratory electric arc furnace, gave a ferronickel alloy with approximately 20% Ni and a slag with 0.16% Ni.

"FOUR PAPERS ON CEMENTED BACKFILL were given at the Annual General Meeting of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1970:Weaver, W. S., and Luka, R., ""Laboratory Studies of Cement-Stabilized Mine Tailings"".Pasieka, A. R., Beattie, H. F., and Espley, G. H., ""Cemented Hydraulic Backill within the Falconbridge Group of Companies"".McLeod, P. C., and Schwartz, A., ""Consolidated Fill at Noranda Mines Limited (Geco Division)"".Clement, W. Somewhat over ten years ago, The Inter-national Nickel Company of Canada, Limited and Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited started experimenting with the addition of Portland cement to mill tailings to produce improved backfill and cheaper floors for scraping. Shortly after, the Canada Cement Company Limited (now Canada Cement Lafarge Ltd.), with full support of the two mining companies, started an extensive research program to provide the technologic-al data necessary to exploit what was obviously going to be a significant development in mining technology."

Mines today use various methods of mining to extract ore. Because of the dangerous nature of many of these processes, remotely controlled LHD machines are being used to extract the ore from the draw point. The remote control system, although being made safer all the time, has remained virtually unchanged for many years. The basic functionality is an operator switching the machine to remote control, getting out of the cab, walking up a stand, operating remotely, returning to the cab, switching to manual, driving manually, switching to remote, and switching to manual. It seems repetitive, and time consuming, does it not? Networking, convergence, video, voice, and data infrastructures, and other technologies are growing by leaps and bounds in virtually every industry and region, except for mining. From the comfort of the living room couch, a Canadian can play hockey online with full voice conversations over the Internet with someone in Russia in real time. Yet, a mine superintendent must jump through hoops to have a private conversation with the front line supervisor underground. "Is Joe around anywhere?" If Joe hears the message, he will respond. If not, who knows? Maybe he's hurt. Maybe he's not. Where is Joe? Nobody really knows, and that is scary. Today, surface knows that the workers disappeared into the cage at 7:00 a.m. They also know that the workers will probably and hopefully return at 3:00 p.m. Is there not a better way to handle this? With such a complex industry, it seems as if, for the most part, the introduction of new technology into mining has either been overlooked or has been met with some resistance. It is time to step back, look at the process, and see how it can be improved. Key areas of focus will be safety, productivity, dependability, and cost-effectiveness.

"Without conscious effort and understanding, a number of factors unique to mineral exploration often hinder building sustainability in host communities. These include the episodic and transitory presence of an exploration team in the community and the inherent uncertainty of outcomes— most projects fail from an exploration perspective. Experience in rural communities across Mesoamerica, however, has shown that it is possible to go beyond pragmatic philanthropy and infrastructure improvements to promote positive, sustainable outcomes in communities. Examples are provided of lessons learned and proven practices that improve quality of life and support a strong social license to operate.RÉSUMÉ Sans une compréhension et un effort réfléchis, de nombreux facteurs uniques à l’exploration minérale nuisent souvent à l’établissement d’un développement durable dans les communautés d’accueil. Ces facteurs comprennent la présence épisodique et transitoire d’une équipe d’exploration dans la communauté et l’incertitude inhérente des résultats – la plupart des projets échouent après l’étape de l’exploration. "This paper explores the history of AC static variable frequency control drive systems on open cast mining machinery, in particular electric mining shovels and electric walking draglines, over the past ten years. It critiques the peformance of these drive systems from a productivity and operating cost standpoint and evaluates the over-all success of the original design concepts as they were envisaged in the 1970s. The paper details the state-of-the-art as it exists today as well as design improvements contemplated for the immediate future.IntroductionConsidering the fact that the very first successful application of an alternating current electrical distribution system occurred at the Gold King gold mine near Ames, Colorado, U.S.A., in the year 1891, it seems somewhat ironic that almost 100 years later, AC excavator drive systems are just now becoming commonplace in the mining industry.If one were to read the biography of Lucien L. Nunn, the first person to successfully install a commercially viable alternating current power distribution system, one would quickly visualize a parallelism between his fight to achieve acceptance of his new lower cost technology and that of those commissioned with the belief that AC static variable frequency control drive systems are not only a better performing, lower cost drive system for mining excavators today, but moreover, the drive systems of the future in our industry.This paper will deal with the evolution and incorporation of AC static drive systems on open cast mining excavators. It will trace the history of the development of these drive systems in the mining industry, the current state-of-the-art concerning these systems, and what the future holds for these excavators in our industry."
