The Na-feldspar orebodies in Sardinia occur along structures belonging to a regional ENE-WSW system that developed during the late stages of the Hercynian orogeny, and that was reactived during the Alpine orogeny. The main petrographic facies include granitoids, albitized granitoids, albitites (more or less rich in quartz), and albitites containing Mg minerals. Field observations and petrological and geochemical data point toward a metasomatic origin for the albitite orebodies. Albitization involved depletion of K from K-feldspar and biotite, dissolution of free quartz, and a lowering of Sr/Na2O and CaO/Na2O ratios in the protolith, under conditions of a positive thermal gradient. The absence of later K-metasomatism implies that, during a subsequent decline in temperature, the composition of the albitizing fuids was modified by an influx of meteoric or other waters. Cyanide management practices on modern gold plants are becoming more onerous, due to environmental pressures, particularly for signatories to the International Cyanide Management Code. Operations are therefore seeking to reduce levels of weak-acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide reporting to spigot discharge as well as to any eventual discharges from the tailings storage facility (TSF). Current gold industry standard processes primarily include the oxidation of cyanide by means of sodium meta-bisulfite (SMBS, or SO2) with air, Caro&apos;s acid (H2SO5) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). These processes require the transport and usage of expensive oxidizing reagents, along with the safety and environmental issues associated with these corrosive and toxic chemicals. Maelgwyn Mineral Services (MMS) has developed the MMS CN-DTM process, which utilizes the Aachen ReactorTM, a high-energy mass-transfer superoxygenation system, in conjunction with an activated carbon-based catalyst and no additional reagents, to increase the rate of cyanide oxidation to cyanate, the thermodynamically more stable form. Testwork conducted at the Maelgwyn Australia testwork facility in Perth Australia is described, at both pilot scale and continuous bench-scale, on a sample of tailings effluent obtained from an Australian gold plant. WAD cyanide is demonstrated to be lowered using the MMS CN-DTM process from an influent of 130 mg/L to the required levels for discharge to TSF (<50 mg/L). The continuous test results showed stable operation over three residence time turnovers. The pilot-scale results demonstrated the efficiency of the process at the reasonably large scales required for engineering cost estimation.

"Laterite ore processed by the Ambatovy joint venture in Madagascar is primarily limonitic in nature, containing approximately 40–45 wt.% Fe and 1.1 wt.% Ni. The process selected for treatment of this ore considered the behaviour and deportment of iron in each step of the commercial flowsheet. Such considerations included nickel and cobalt recoveries, reagent consumptions, liquid-solid separation characteristics, and intermediate and final product purities. In this paper, the results for the first three years of commercial operation at Ambatovy are compared with the design parameters, with emphasis on the behaviour of iron.RÉSUMÉ Le minerai latéritique traité par l’entreprise commune Ambatovy au Madagascar contient principalement de la limonite, composée de 40–45 % en poids (wt%) de fer (Fe) et de 1,1 wt% de nickel (Ni). Le procédé choisi pour le traitement de ce minerai tenait compte du comportement et du maintien du fer à chaque étape du schéma de traitement commercial. Ambatovy ore is primarily limonitic in nature, containing approximately 40–45 wt.% Fe and 1.1 wt.% Ni. The nickel content of the ore is approximately 1/40th that of the iron content by weight; therefore, successful recovery of nickel depends on close control of the behaviour of iron in the selected process.The Ambatovy area is located 80 km east of Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. Exploration dates back to 1960, when the Malagasy Service Géologique carried out a limited pitting and auger-drilling program. Phelps Dodge Corporation (now Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc.) was granted the mining rights to the property in 1995 and carried out significant resource definition, environmental assessment, and engineering studies between 1995 and 2001 (Chou, Rooke, Williams, & Hanks, 2000). In 2003, Dynatec Corporation, which was formed in 1997 by the merger of Dynatec International Ltd. and Sherritt International Consultants Inc., signed a joint venture agreement with subsidiaries of Phelps Dodge to evaluate the Ambatovy nickel project. Dynatec became extensively involved in the development of the project, including process selection and pilot plant testing in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta (Collins et al., 2004, 2005; Collins & Vardill, 2005; Collins, Buban, Holloway, Masters, & Raudsepp, 2009). Dynatec acquired 100% of the project in 2005 and a joint venture between Dynatec, Sumitomo Corporation, Korea Resources Corporation (KORES), and SNC-Lavalin Inc. (SLI) was formed shortly thereafter to provide funding for further development. SLI was responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction management of the commercial facilities. Sherritt International Corporation reacquired Dynatec Corporation, including 40% ownership in the Ambatovy nickel project, in 2007. The current Ambatovy joint venture consists of an integrated nickel and cobalt mining, processing, refining, and marketing enterprise between subsidiaries of Sherritt (40% owner and mine and plant operator), Sumitomo Corporation (32.5% owner), and KORES (27.5% owner)."

"This paper will describe the methods and the results of studies to integrate polymetallic nodule extractive metallurgy methods into existing and operating technologies or plants with the aim of reducing the capital cost of deep-sea mining challenges and to streamline the supply chain of raw materials where such opportunities exist (Moa Bay and others). It will also assess the possibility to carry out pre-industrial processing operations with productivity corresponding to pilot mining operation in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (5–10% of assumed annual production) with the use of existing facilities. The present study shows the results of high pressure acid leaching of polymetallic nodules (PN) mixed with laterite non-commercial ore. It also presents PN processing in the presence of ammoniacal tailings obtained from the Caron process. The experiments were carried out according to 24 full factorial design. The regression equations were determined for extractions of Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn. The obtained results show that increasing temperature, the acid/ mineral ratio and the leaching time have a positive and significant effect on extraction of all the studied metals. However, increasing the tailings addition favors the extraction of the Co, Zn and Mn. The extraction of Fe diminishes, while the extraction of Ni is not affected. In the following conditions; 180 min, 260°C, 0.5 kg acid /kg minerals and 2.5 kg PN/kg tailing; the following extractions were achieved; 96% Ni, 90% Co, 97% Cu, 99.9% Zn, 43% Mn and 26% Fe."

The solubilities and distributions of molybdenum and iridium in iron silicate slag and copper-iron mattes were studied using an equilibration-quenching technique and subsequent direct phase composition analyses by EPMA (Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis) and LA-ICP-MS (Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry). The equilibrations were carried out on a wide matte grade interval, ranging from 55 wt-% Cu to 75 wt-% Cu, in pSO2 = 0.1 atm at 1300°C. The results in equilibrium with a solid iridium-molybdenum alloy indicated an iridium solubility of 150–500 ppmw in the sulphide matte, depending on the matte grade, and a molybdenum solubility of 100–600 ppmw. Iridium was distributing predominantly in the sulphide matte with the distribution coefficient of 10+3 - +4 but molybdenum deported predominantly in the slag with Lm/s(Mo) = 0.02–0.1. The effects of alumina and lime additions in the smelting slag were also examined. INTRODUCTION Iridium is a highly siderophile element (HSE), which means that it is incompatible with the sulphide forming elements and possesses a small solubility in mattes, such as copper- and nickel-iron sulphide melts. Molybdenum behaves only modestly in that way (Walker & Li, 2008; Righter et al., 2017). They both are known to be trace elements accompanying copper and nickel sulphide ores. No solubility data, however, are available for them in copper-rich sulphide mattes. Geochemical data on the behaviour of Ir and Mo deal mostly with low-iron silicate systems, e.g. basaltic melts, and high-sulphur sulphide solutions and mattes (Ertel et al., 2008; Fonseca et al., 2007). They also indicate that Ir and Mo dissolve in silicate melts primarily as oxides and not as electrically neutral metal species. Most geological data of iridium focus on high-sulphur systems of the monosulphide composition and typically Fe-Ni mattes where copper is a trace element (Fleet et al., 1996; Sattari et al., 2002). Direct solubility measurements for mattes and iron-lean silicates have also been made using pure Ir or an Ir alloy as the saturation phase (Borisov & Palme, 2000; O’Neill & Eggins, 2002; Makovicky & Karup-Møller, 1999; Ertel et al., 2008; Mungall & Brenan, 2014). A recent summary about the solubilities of HSE’s in iron- and sulphur free silicates is available in Laurenz (2012). The thermodynamics of molybdenum partitioning between oxides and Fe-S-O melts was studied by Mengason et al. (2011). Their results indicate strong accumulation in the iron-rich sulphide in reducing conditions (pO2 = 10-9.6 atm in Ni-NiO equilibrium at 1050°C). Molybdenum dissolves in iron-lean silicate melts as MoO3 species in oxygen pressures above the Fe-FeO equilibrium and as MoO2 in more reducing conditions (Farges et al., 2006; Righter et al., 2017).

"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines processing plant layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects, including additional crushing and screening requirements, transport of rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements), and effects on the processing plant footprint. ¦ KEYWORDS Cold climates, Ore sorting, Plant layout RÉSUMÉ L’intérêt porté à l’utilisation du tri granulométrique du minerai a considérablement augmenté au vu des récents progrès réalisés en matière de technologies de triage et des capacités supérieures par unité. Le tri granulométrique du minerai offre une plus-value intéressante en termes de traitement du minerai à plus faible teneur extrait des mines ; il permet par ailleurs l’acheminement vers le concentrateur de minerai à plus haute teneur et la revalorisation des stériles dans le minerai. On met généralement l’accent sur la susceptibilité du minerai au triage et sur les réductions connexes en termes d’utilisation de l’énergie, de l’eau et de biens consommables. Cependant, l’aménagement physique de l’équipement a une incidence non négligeable sur le coût installé d’une usine de concentration, et les répercussions sur l’aménagement de l’installation d’un circuit de triage du minerai dans l’usine doivent être soigneusement examinées. Open Pit Mining of Golden Band Resources? EP Gold Deposit Golden Band Resources Inc. (GBN:TSX-V) is Saskatchewan&apos;s newest Gold Producer. Located in the La Ronge Gold Belt of northern Saskatchewan, GBN has over 875 km2 of claims with 12 known gold deposits and 4 former producing mines. Production has begun at the Roy Lloyd Mine (Bingo Deposit), to be followed initially by our EP and Komis properties. Development of the underground infrastructure at the Roy Lloyd Mineis continuing and on schedule. Production from these deposits will feed our centrally located and 100% owned Jolu mill. We have our provincial environmental permits in place, and we have an established infrastructure including a 400 tonne-per-day mill, year-round road access, and access to grid power. Construction of the grid power line and the above ground tailings facility are now complete.

New technology first introduced by Nippon Steel Corporation at Kitakyushu in Japan in 1976 now used at a number of plants in other countries, known as dry quenching of coke, uses nitrogen in a closed circuit to avoid environmental emissions. In addition, heat is recovered in the form of steam, from the red-hot coke. In steel plants oxygen is used extensively and therefore by-product nitrogen from air liquefaction can be effectively utilized in this way.

"The recycling of aluminum materials is a green industry while Al–Si–Fe is a typical scrap aluminum alloy. The key point of recycling Al–Si–Fe alloys is to separate Al and Fe. A method by introducing Al–Si–Fe alloy into Mg melt has been investigated in this work. A separation layer with gathered Fe–rich and Al–poor Fe3Al0.7Si0.3particleswereobtained at the bottom of the cooled ingot, indicating that ß–Al5FeSi phase evolves to Fe3Al0.7Si0.3,and quantities of Al are released to the upper Mg matrix simultaneously. However, the evolution of Al3Fe by adding binary Al–Fe alloy into Mg melt is different. It is supposed that element Si plays an important role in the phase evolution procedure, thus affects the performance of this method.INTRODUCTIONThe rapid development of aeronautic, automotive and aerospace technologies strongly depends on the consumption of materials while sustainable development is the future direction. Aluminum is a recyclable material and Fe is one of the most common impurities. Fe can be introduced into Al alloys by adding low–purity alloying materials and by using unprotected ferrous crucible, tools, or equipment (Belov, Eskin, & Avxentieva, 2005; Lu& Dahle, 2005).For instance, wear–resistant rings are usually inserted into piston head when producing Al–Si pistons and an infiltration procedure by putting the cast iron rings into Al melt before casting is always essential. As a result, both the re–melting of pistons and the reuse of Al melt for infiltrating rings lead to the enrichment of Fe element, which can be even high to5 wt.%(Viala, Peronnet, Barbeau, Bosselet, & Bouix, 2002).It is widely known that coarse ß–Al5FeSi particles will form in high Fe–contained Al–Si–Fe alloys which is harmful for the mechanical properties. In the past decades, several methods to eliminate the harmful effect of ß–Al5FeSi have been investigated which can be widely referred (Munson, 1967; Lee, Kawamura, Inoue, Cho, & Masumoto, 1997; Suárez–Peña& Asensio–Lozano, 2006; Eidhed, 2008).These methods can be divided into two kinds. One is to aggregate and remove the Fe–rich phase through the methods of centrifugation, gravity filtration or magnetic separation. The other way is modifing the morphology of flake–like ß–Al5FeSi by overheating the melt or adding neutralized elements. However, these traditional methods are rarely used due to respective disadvantages, while the commonly used method in industries is using primary aluminum for dilution. However, only less than 30wt.% of scrap Al can be added into primary Al melt for each melting work while it also results in the decrease of product quality simultaneously(Zhang, Liu, & Liu, 2016)."

The flow behaviour and microstructure development of a near-alpha titanium alloy during beta working has been investigated. Typical cogging conditions were simulated through compression testing of IMI834 at temperatures of 1025°C-1100°C, strain rates of 0.01 s-1 - 1 s-1 and post-deformation heat treatments up to 4h. Using a synthesis of available literature models, a finite element model has been developed and validated through quantitative measures of flow stress-strain data and beta grain characteristics. Flow behaviour was analyzed through a self-consistent method while the microstructure development was considered with regard to the kinetics of beta recrystallization. Deformation at beta or high alpha/beta working temperatures (T>l025°C) produced minor flow softening with complete grain refinement achieved through metadynamic recrystallization.

Large quantities of ferromanganese sludge are generated as waste material by blast furnace during the manufacturing of ferromanganese. These slags are very rich in manganese, zinc and lead (5 to 40 %). These residues have been deposited in a pond in periphery of the steel industry. Considering the market value of the metals, these brownfield sites can now be considered as secondary resources. We have developed a hydrometallurgical process for selectively leaching Zn, Mn and Pb in order to produce compounds of Mn and Zn pure enough to be economically recoverable and a residue rich in Pb. Batch laboratory experiments were carried out to determine appropriate leaching conditions to maximize zinc extraction (100 %) and manganese extraction (90.0 %) with sulfuric acid and to generate a residue containing 15 to 30% of lead. This Pb residue is recyclable by another process.

The promotion of improved coal quality for thermal generation can benefit our national economy. The construction of electric generating facilities in Canada is expanding at a rapid rate to satisfy the demands of a rising population and new uses for electrical energy. With remaining economic water power resources in the process of development, generation from thermal sources continues to grow. The increase in thermal capability has been somewhat arrested by a de-pressed economy, widening of inter-provincial and state transmission networks and decisions to exploit certain water resources before high capital investment is further in-creased by rising construction costs. The introduction of extra high volt-age transmission lines will further delay thermal generation planning, but in due course, when the effects of restrictive factors have been dissipated, steam-electric generation from fossil fuels will rise to considerable proportions. In time, nuclear sources will contribute a growing share to thermal power, but, it is doubtful if nuclear participation will ever displace conventional fuels for steam rising, unless it can be adapted to operate efficiently for variable outputs in peaking service. Mines in Canada and the United States are subject to regulations limiting ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels in mine effluents released into the environment. The primary source of these nitrogen compounds is typically explosive used in blasting operations, as ammonium nitrate (AN) remains a significant component of most explosives used in the mining industry. The amount of AN entering a local water drainage system is related to site conditions, explosives used, explosive handling and blast efficiency. Mining operators acknowledge AN loss to mine water from blasting operations. However, the mechanisms by which ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are entering the water drainage system, or the relative contribution of specific mechanisms, may not necessarily be assessed or monitored adequately. Characterization of these mechanisms, through systematic investigations, allows a mining operation to focus its efforts on reducing AN loss. This paper outlines a strategy for investigating the mechanisms through which AN enters the mine water drainage system and methods to mitigate this loss. This strategy includes collection and analysis of data to identify and quantify the AN loss mechanisms, design and implementation of tests to mitigate this loss, and assessment of the results. Such investigations are not intended to be a separate one-time project, but part of a long-term process of continual feedback and optimization that is related to the collection and reporting of AN levels for regulatory purposes. The implementation of the strategy must be tailored to each mine?s requirements and existing conditions.

"The mining and mineral industries have been, and remain, a major component of the Canadian economy. There are approximately 560 producing mining establishments of which there are some 130 metal mines and an equal number of non-metal mines, the balance being quarries for stone, sand and gravel. For 17 metals and minerals, Canada ranks within the top five as a world producer. There are 29 metallurgical plants. Employment in mining, smelting and refining was about 150000 in 1990. Mineral production, including coal, is about $20 billion. Exports up to the metal stage amount to $15 billion providing a positive trade balance of some $10 billion.The producing industry has a wide diversity of products. The companies range from small single mining operations to large multinationals. In terms of technology the industry has always been in the forefront of cost-effective practice, either using home-grown innovation or freely importing technology from around the world,The Mining Industry Technology Council (MITEC) makes an annual survey of the exploration and R&D expenditures of the senior mining industry that is the mining companies that are involved in mineral production from their existing mines. It does not include those companies solely involved in exploration using funds raised through equity sales.Table 1 shows the actual R&D and exploration expenditures as a per cent of sales. R&D shows a rising trend since 1988although the drop in value of output due to lower prices must be recognized as contributing to the increase. The point about this compilation is that the mining industry re-invests some 4070 of its sales in both exploration and R&D in order to sustain itself. Exploration for the renewal of metal inventories for future mining is a process unique to mining. It is not classified as R&D, and the necessity for this investment goes unrecognized by those who state that the industry does not do enough R&D."

Supplying ventilation in underground metal mines can be one of the most energy demanding services required to support production activities. Consequently, as energy, in the form of electricity or combustible fuels can be expensive and their unit cost is expected to increase, there is significant interest in reducing the overall demands of a mine?s ventilation system through such initiatives as controlling ventilation based upon demand and exploring other power alternatives to the current usage of the diesel engine in mobile mine vehicles. However, determining the benefit of any energy saving technology is complex and not universal applicable across the industry, consequently they have not been widely adopted. For these technologies to succeed they must be strategically applied based upon sound business cases. The intent of this paper is to provide information on some of the prospective control strategies and their potential impact on the power consumption related to supplying ventilation.

PORRITT: When the collars of the holes, particularly the diamond-drill holes, are close together, two out of three holes are loaded only to within six or seven feet of the collars, and the intervening holes are loaded close to the collars. When the collars are farther apart, the holes are loaded close to the collars. No spacers are used, and the holes are filled solid with powder, this applying particularly to the diamond-drill holes, except, of course, where the collars are close together and some holes are not loaded close to the collars. MR. J. G. L. McCREA: I would like to enquire in respect to the various efforts made to reduce the cost of diamond drilling to the lowest point, what is. the relative cost of the solid bit to the standard bit? It would seem that the solid bit has the higher cost. MR. PORRITT: The non-coring or solid bit gives a slightly lower diamond cost than the coring bit. With the coring bit, the greatest diamond loss is on the inside stones, apparently due partly to vibration, but mainly to the core blocking against these stones. This condition, of course, does not apply with the non-coring bit. Our experience is that the non-coring bit, which drills out a much greater area, has a diamond consumption slightly less than the coring bit. The non-coring bit is sturdier, and is far less liable to damage in starting holes and in drilling through cracked or broken ground.

"In the present paper, the optimization of a tilt poured permanent mold will be carried out using filling and solidification modeling. This exercise resulted in 3 modifications of the initial mold design which was based on the foundry experience. The optimization provided a 20% improvement in the yield while increasing the output from 10 to 15 castings per hour.In a subsequent study, the value of the critical fraction solid of AlSi7Mg (A356) alloy was verified by radiographic analysis of the castings produced in the first 5 cycles of a run, which are necessary to bring the mold to a dynamic thermal equilibrium."
