"This paper describes mechanical and operating modifications that were and are being made to current on-line flotation cells at Falconbridge Nickel Mines concentrators. Improved metallurgical performance and metal recoveries of some 3·4% over the past ten years are the end result of the modifications made. The paper acknowledges the contribution of operating, technical and maintenance personnel and the Company ""suggestion plan"" program. 1. INTRODUCTIONFalconbrirdge Nickel Mines Limited, incorporated in 1928 is a major product of nickel, copper,coba1t and other metals and minerals. The Canadian Nickel Division operating facilities in the Sudbury Area currently includes seven mines, two concentrators, and a smelter.For many years at all concentrators, improv0mcnts in metal recoveries have been continually under investigation. One area was to improve the flotation cell performance. This paper will deal with mechanical and operating modifications to the cells at the Strathcona and Falconhridge Ni-Cu sulphide concentrators, at the Sudbury Operations.One of the prime means to mineral beneficiation processing has been, and will continue to be, the basic froth flotation cell. The efficient operation of a flotation cell is the key to satisfactory metal selectivity and recovery. The essence of good design is simplicity. Changes to cell design can contribute to a significant improvement in metal recovery.Over the past 10 years, modifications to the flotation cells have contributed to an improvement of some 3-4” in mineral recovery. The year 1987 marked the centennial of the beginning of modern hydrometallurgy. On October 19, 1887 British Patent No. 14174 entitled Process of Obtaining Gold and Silver from Ores was issued*. The discovery was made by John Steward MacArthur (Fig. 1), a chemist-metallurgist, supported and assisted by Robert and William Forrest, two brothers practicing medicine in Glasgow. The discovery was made in the basement of their clinic. The process, which became known as the cyanidation process in reference to the alkali cyanide reagent used, immediately received industrial success in New Zealand in 1889 and in South Africa in 1890t. It displaced the chlorination method which had been in use. In 1903 MacArthur was awarded the first Medal of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in London1131 - The cyanidation process was responsible for the doubling of gold production in the world in the two decades which followed its first application (Fig. 2). To the modern metallurgist, it may be surprising to think of MacArthur coming across an obscure reagent such as an alkali cyanide as a leaching agent for gold ores. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the background and the factors that led to this invention, the development of the understanding of the process, and the application of modern technology.

A mathematical model of a decision is represented by the table in Figure 4. The numbers in the matrix are a measure of the effectiveness of each alternate for an objective. In this case, it is the per cent of desired profit that is satisfied by each alternate for each objective. By adding all of the values in a row, we have a measure of which alternative is best for both objectives. However, if you think that alternate 1 is necessarily better than alternate 2, you are wrong. Why? Because the weight of the objectives may not be equal. It could just be that this plant can sell more than it can produce, so that the loss in profit represented by increased sales is more than twice as important as reductions in costs. (See Figure 5). In that case, let us weigh objective 1 as 30 per cent and objective 2 as 70 per cent. It must also be obvious that the sum of all the "objective weights" must equal 100 per cent. The Lac Otelnuk iron property is located in the Province of Québec in the Northern Labrador Trough. The Labrador Trough is an extensive geosyncline of Proterozoic rocks, unconformably underlain by Archean gneisses. The Lac Otelnuk iron property hosts two significant magnetite iron-formation taconite deposits that outcrop, are sub-horizontal and are known to extend for at least 25 kilometres along strike. The host sedimentary rock package that includes a cherty iron formation is weakly metamorphosed to greenschist facies.

"This paper begins with a brief history of Madawaska Mines, a brief description of the geology, mining methods and equipment, and the historical development of 7/8-in. tapered drilling equipment. It then outlines the performance characteristics and inherent problems of the traditional 12-degree, tapered connection, blade-type insert bits. Service-free (Unipass) button-type insert bits are presented as a possible solution to these problems. The paper concludes with an analysis of button bit performance to date.Brief History of Madawaska MinesMadawaska Mines Limited, near Bancroft, Ontario, is in Faraday Township, Hastings County, approximately 100 miles northeast of Toronto and 100 miles west of Ottawa.The mine re-opened in 1976committed to 1,500 tons per day to provide approximately 600,000 pounds of yellowcake (U3O8) per year to A.G.I.P. (an Italian government agency) under the joint ownership of Federal Resources Corporation, Salt Lake City (51%), and Consolidated Canadian Faraday Limited (49%). At present, the mine is producing approximately 2 pounds per ton (.1% U3O8) at the rate of 60,000 pounds per month. The mine employs about 400 employees.Brief Description of Geology, Mining Methods and EquipmentGeologyThe Grenville metasediments of the mine area are chiefly paragneiss, amphobolite and some carbonate (marble) rocks, which were intruded by a basic rock, altered to a metagabbrometadiorite. These formations are generally concordant, striking east to northeast and dipping 45 to 60 degrees to the south. Locally, the metagabbro is often discordant. The above group of rocks (mixed hybrid gneisses) forms the hanging wall of the south-dipping Faraday granite sheet and was intruded by nepheline syenite, syenite and granite. The ore occurs in the granite-syenite-pegmatite dykes that are probably genetically related to the Faraday granite. The ore shoots are erratically distributed within the pegmatite bodies, mainly on the hanging or footwalls but also medially. Their size varies from 50 to 350 feet in length, 5 to 40 feet in width and 50 to 200 feet in height. The ore occurs most frequently in a medium-grained granite or syenite, well hematized with 10 to 30% mafic crystals of pyroxene, amphibole and/or relics of the host rock."

The campaign life of furnaces in the copper making industry is greatly affected by damage caused by normal operation cycling and abnormal conditions. Proper monitoring and assessment of the existing conditions and safe remaining life of the vessels and their refractory lining is key to prevent an unplanned early replacement. This paper presents an industry-proven refractory management program as well as a typical fitness-for-service assessment of a rotary vessel shell in order to extend the campaign life of copper making furnaces and enhance safety. The furnace refractory management system involves a comprehensive audit and monitoring program which has been successfully applied to several copper flash smelting furnaces over the past 15 years. The fitness for service assessment provides a methodology to estimate the remaining life of the steel components by evaluating the existing damage and future damage rate based on the historical survey data. The above practices can provide the operator with cost savings by extending the vessel campaign life in lieu of implementing more rigorous refractory lining and shell audits. INTRODUCTION Primary copper smelting is generally divided into two categories of flash smelting and open bath smelting. There are many different types of vessels that can be used to convert the copper concentrate to blister copper including, flash, Mitsubishi process, TSL (ISA/Ausmelt), SKS Bottom Blowing, Anode and Teniente/Noranda furnaces, reactors, and Peirce Smith converters. Each vessel has its own complex and intense environment which requires careful refractory and steel design to withstand the severe thermomechanical and thermochemical attacks within its campaign life. The campaign life of furnaces is greatly affected by damage caused by normal operation cycling and abnormal conditions. Proper assessment of the existing conditions and safe remaining life of the vessels and/or refractory lining is key to prevent an unplanned early replacement. This paper presents an industry-proven refractory management program as well as a fitness-for- service assessment methodology to estimate the remaining campaign life of copper making furnaces resulting in cost savings and enhanced safety of the operating vessels.

Selection of a suitable site for a metallurgical plant is crucial for the success of the business case. For a brownfield project, with the decision to locate the project on a site with existing production facilities and activities, the selection of the site has been made. For a greenfield project, important economic and logistical considerations include proximity to primary and secondary resources and/or to the market, infrastructure, and access to energy and water. National and regional aspects, including the social license to operate, can be decisive in final site selection. Key to recruiting and retaining a labour force are proximity to urban areas, along with weather and health conditions at the site. Risk factors include site geotechnical parameters and topography, contamination, as well as probability and types of potential natural disasters.

The Mining industry faces many challenges, one of which is the demand to communicate over a variety of media, be it visual, sound, voice, data or any combination. Over the years multiple infrastructures have been put in place to overcome environmental obstacles and address these communication needs. A mine is an aggressive environment for electronic equipment and as such only the best quality equipment can perform under those special conditions of e.g. temperature, dust and humidity. "The mechanics of crushing and grinding operations in mining and excavation processes has been investigated in a laboratory simulation study. It employs a multi-particle bedded rock target, which is subjected to multiple impacts. The impact set-up consists of a Hopkinson pressure bar and a Piston-holder system. The apparatus, employing a 38 mm diameter pressure bar, was used to apply varying but calibrated dynamic loading force on the rock particles. The energy consumed by the sample during fragmentation was determined by considering the energy carried by the incident wave and the reflected wave. The Pistonholder system is used to hold rock samples and to recycle fragments after each test for particle size analysis, for single as well as multiple impacts. The feed size selected was in the range of 9.5 to 12.7 mm for all rock samples, and the impact velocity was set at 14 m/s. Two strong granitic rocks and a relatively weak limestone were the target rocks. The resulting particle size distribution after each set of impacts, ranging from single to 10 consecutive impacts, were analyzed, and various size distribution functions (i.e. Rosin- Rammler, Swebrec, Grady and Gilvarry functions) were fitted to compare their suitability in predicting the fragment size distribution for each rock type. INTRODUCTIONCrushers are widely used in the mining industry all over the world. Understanding fragmentation behaviour of rock under crushing process is fundamental to improved productivity and efficiency in mining operations. This is particularly so as all subsequent size reduction processes such as crushing and grinding are far more energy intensive than the initial blasting process employed in breaking of in situ rock. A considerable body of experimental studies exists on the behaviour of rock crushers for specific rock types in order to aid in the design of various types of crushers. However, these studies are mainly site specific, that is, the results are largely empirical, and the fundamentals of fracture process that lead to size reduction have not been dealt with adequately. Most such studies have attempted to link the input parameters, such as feed size and crusher parameters, with output particle size, and global energy expended in the process. However the physical mechanism of crushing process is still not well understood. First of all, the energy consumed by the rock sample is hard to calculate during standard crushing or grinding tests; secondly, multi-particle test is hard to perform in the laboratory due to irregular shape of the subject rock sample. In This paper, describes a laboratory crushing apparatus for multi-particle rock samples, with sufficient control of the energy expended in the process, with a view to relate creation of new fracture surfaces in the size reduction process."

ABSTRACT Exploration by geophysical methods and diamond drilling of an occurrence of chrysotile asbestos, located ten miles east of Matheson, Ontario, was commenced on March 25th, 1949, by the Canadian Johns-Manville Company, Limited. The asbestos is associated with a narrow sill-like body of basic and ultrabasic rocks which strikes northwesterly across portions of Munro and Beatty townships. To date, asbestos zones of commercial interest, many hundreds of feet in length, width, and depth, have been outlined by diamond drilling along a 2-mile length of serpentine. The fractures occupied by the asbestos veins are closely associated with the regional faulting in the area. The mining of the first occurrence, or A orebody, will be by open-pit methods. Milling will commence at a rate of 50 tons an hour. INTRODUCTION OCCURRENCES of chrysotile asbestos in Munro township have been known at least since 1914 and references to them appear in reports published by the Ontario Department of Mines in 1915 (1) and 1919 (2). J. G. Ross (3) in his excellent publication on Chrysotile Asbestos in Canada, mentions an occurrence in Munro township. The area was first mapped in detail by J. Satterly, of the Ontario Department of Mines, in 1944, and brief mention is made of chrysotile asbestos in Satterly's preliminary report (4), which was published the following year.

Iron ores concentration at Russia’s operations is carried out using conventional flow sheets. They comprise the two-four stage grinding followed by one-two stage magnetic separation. This results in the maximum recovery of magnetite to concentrate and the tailings generation. The final concentrate is generated only during the last stage of magnetic separation. Technologically, this flow sheet layout is not effective at recovering the liberated magnetite grains during grinding to the resulting concentrate. Advanced models of magnetic separators do not allow for the selective separation of the tailings and the portion of the resulting iron ore concentrate. Magnetic product which is the ore mixture of the liberated magnetite grains, high grade and low grade intergrowths is directed to the next grinding stage. In this case, regrinding of the liberated magnetite occurs. In addition, the performance of hydrocyclones during classification in closed grinding circuits is poor. Their classification efficiency does not provide the material separation in accordance with the size. In this case, simultaneous separation in accordance with the density occurs. The quartz particles with the size of 300 mm have similar velocity and trajectory like the particles of magnetite with the size of 60 mm. As a result, light and coarser intergrowths report to the overflow and free heavy magnetite grains report to underflow and return to regrinding (“the density effect”). This resulted in a significant increase of a mill circulating load, the decrease in the feed throughput and higher power consumption. In this connection, the development of iron ore concentrate stage recovery with the focus on gradual liberation of the intergrowths is getting much attention. Gravity concentration technique, particularly, spiral separation is effective at solving the problem of stage recovery not only the dump waste product but also high grade magnetite concentrates at the early concentration stages. This can be attributed to a significant difference in magnetite (4.9-5.2 g/cm3) and host minerals (quartz 2.7 g/cm3) densities, which is the principal during gravity concentration. The test work on concentration of various products samples from current operations (the mills discharges, concentrates from various stages of wet magnetic separation and cyclones underflows) was carried out. Spiral separators SV-500 and ShV-500 manufactured by Spirit LLC were used for the test work. High grade iron ore concentrate (69.05% Fe) was generated during primary wet magnetic separation concentrate concentration using a spiral separator. During the concentration of mills discharges the content of iron in the resulting concentrates and middlings of wet magnetic separation II stage was 64.5% and 64.6%, respectively. The recovery of iron to the concentrates of spiral separation was 33.6-42.0%. The studies presented demonstrate that by using spiral separation for iron-bearing ores concentration, you can separate magnetite liberated grains at the early concentration stages, decrease their regrinding and circulating loads in grinding circuits. This process is able to improve the overall recovery and economics of iron ores concentration process.

"Irgiredmet Institute carried out the study on the development of gold recovery technology from refractory ore from a Russian deposit. The ore contained 1.1 g/t Au, 1.5% of pyrite and 2.4% of pyrrhotite. The recovery of gold achieved was 84.7% using gravity with generation of high grade recoverable gold concentrate and gravity middling. In the course of lime treatment, cyanidation of the middling followed by tailings detoxification the consumption of reagents was 13.0 kg/t CaO, 95 kg/t NaCN and 72 kg/t Ca(OCl)2 of the concentrate. This was capital intensive.In order to decrease the consumption of reagents, magnetic separation of the middling of the concentrates from gravity separation was added to this flow sheet. Pyrrotite recovered to magnetic fraction, which did not contain gold in accordance to this advanced flow sheet. The mass yield of pyrite goldbearing non-magnetic fraction decreased down to 1.5 times in relative to gravity middling. The slurry filtration prior to and after cyanidation allowed the organization of cyanide solution recycling.The results of pilot plant tests using the developed flow sheet showed that the content of pyrrhotite in the non-magnetic fraction decreased from 59.1% to 11.3%. The reagents consumption was 12 kg/t CaO, 3 kg/t NaCN and 16 kg/t Ca(OCl)2 of the pyrite concentrate. The total gold recovery using this flow sheet was 83.4%. Due to a decreased consumption of reagents, cost efficiency of the process was achieved. Based on the results of this research, a project design criteria was developed. A processing plant with the annual throughput of 2.6 million tonnes of ore is being designed."

The benefits of Thiess? extensive experience is brought to each client and project, whilst business improvement within projects, to the mutual benefit of both the client and Thiess, is a key part of all long term contract relationships. Historically, optimal business outcomes were closely related to the achievement of production and cost performance measures. Whilst these remain fundamental to successful mining businesses, other elements of sustainability are assuming increasing importance. As a large energy user, greenhouse and energy management is becoming an important part of Thiess? business. Thiess is a signatory to Australian government initiatives such as Greenhouse Challenge Plus, and is integrating energy management into its operations and business improvement programs, in many cases to the benefit also of the client. This paper will highlight the benefits that an organisation such as Thiess can bring to a mine owner. Thiess? approach to business improvement and cost reduction, sustainability and energy management, as well as the relationship between these will also be considered. Increasingly, overall mining performance is dependent on the alignment of formally disparate elements.

Froth flotation is widely used for upgrading of ores and other materials. Efficiency of flotation depends on many parameters, including type, chemical structure and dose of flotation reagents. Selection of a proper frother in flotation depends on the material used, necessary dose of frother and its selectivity. The selectivity of flotation can be characterized by proper separation factors and indices. In this paper separation selectivity and power of frothers were evaluated basing on separation data for a given material and frother, plotted as the recovery of the useful component in the concentrate versus the recovery of the remaining components in the tailing. Such a plot is called the Fuerstenau upgrading curve. The selectivity was defined as the location of the whole upgrading curve in relation to no and ideal separation lines, expressed on the scale from 50 (no separation) to 100% (ideal separation). In turn, the flotation power was defined as the dose of frother to reach a certain upgrading level at which recoveries of the useful and unwanted components are equal. The power and selectivity of frothers were determined for the Kupferschiefer stratiform copper ore floated in the presence of a fixed amount of xanthate and varying doses of frothers using a laboratory flotation machine. Basing on the separation results for different poly(propylene glycol) (CnH2n+1O(C3H6O)mH, CnPm) and poly(ethylene glycol) (CnH2n+1O(C2H4O)mH, CnEm) alkyl ethers, it was found that the concentrate yield and recovery of copper as the useful component in the concentrate were greatly influenced by the type and dose of frother. However, the same results plotted in the form of the Fuerstenau upgrading curve clearly indicated that the selectivity of frothers was similar, while their power was different. It proves that both selectivity and power of frothers are useful parameters for characterizing flotation systems.

"The gold mines of Kirkland Lake are in Teck township, Timiskaming district, Ontario, latitude 48°9'N. and longitude 80°3'W., at an elevation of 1,038 feet above sea-level.There are seven contiguous producing mines in a length of 3;1/2 miles along the general east-west strike of the deposits. The seven mines are, in order from west to east, Macassa, Kirkland Lake, Teck-Hughes, Lake Shore, Wright-Hargreaves, Sylvanite, and Toburn.The first discovery of gold in the zone was made by W. H. Wright in 1911 on the east claim of the Wright-Hargreaves property, and the following year the Tough brothers and H. Oakes found gold in what is now the No. 1 vein_ at the Toburn. Production began at the Toburn in 1915, followed by Teck-Hughes in 1917, Lake Shore in 1918, Kirkland Lake Gold in 1919, Wright-Hargreaves in 1921, Sylvanite in 1927, and Macassa in 1933.To the end of 1946, 31,938,350 tons of ore had been milled at the Kirkland Lake mines, from which 16,132,700 oz. gold, having a value of $498,517,600, were recovered. The bullion varies from mine to mine between 800 and 900 fine, the average for all the mines being 853. "The following description of the geology of the Northern Empire mine is recorded by the senior author, but is based on the observations and complementary mapping of both authors.The Northern Empire mine is a mile east of Beardmore, and 100 miles northeast of Port Arthur, Thunder Bay district, Ontario.Production started in March, 1934, and terminated in September, 1941. The total number of tons milled was 425,866, from which 153,103 oz. gold was recovered. The lowest level from which ore was mined was the 1,900- foot, but considerable drifting was performed on the 2,075-foot and 800 feet on the 2,415-foot, the deepest level,The vein strikes about N.72°E. and has an average dip of80°S. In stoped sections the quartz averaged about 2 feet wide. On the 1,725-foot level it was drifted on continuously for more than 7,000 feet. In the mine as a whole, practically no commercial ore was found beyond points 1,400 feet west and 1,800 feet east of the shaft. Conspicuous wall-rock alteration extended throughout this section, but not much beyond these limits. There was some splitting of the vein and widening of the alteration halo on the lower levels. The average general colour of the quartz changes with depth .The vein is in 'Keewatin' lava flows, to which it is almost conformable. It lies only a short distance south from the 'Timiskaming-Keewatin' contact ( Fig. 2). This contact is marked by a black graphitic fault. So far as is known the fault is parallel, or nearly parallel, with the flows in strike, but dips at 72°S., which is 5° flatter than the average dip of the overturned flows. A post-vein, almost flat sheet of diabase about 550 feet thick cuts outthe vein from about the 650- to the 1,200-foot level ( Figs . 1 and 3). If it was intruded along a fault, the fault had only minor displacement. A strong alteration halo extends to 200 feet above and below the diabase. The vein was conspicuous but in large part it was below ore grade for 100 feet or more above and below the diabase.-"

"Smelter Feed Preparation Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, Sudbury Operations, operate 4 mills and a smelter to produce Bessemer Ni-Cu matte for refining in Norway. Approximately 1400 tons of Ni-Cu concentrate are produced daily which are dried from a filter cake containing 14% moisture to 7.5% moisture pellets. Concentrate drying is done by 4 rotary dryers as shown in the 'Dryer Performance Data' at four separate locations. The dryers all form part of the feed preparation stage prior to sintering.The rate at which concentrate can be produced through the Sinter Plant largely depends on the quality of the dried product which makes up the feed. A feed consisting of mostly hardened pellets will sinter much faster than a feed which consists of broken pellets and dust. Dryer products require:1. Good green strength to survive shipment and handling.2. Correct moisture content.3. Sizing within a range ideally from 1/4"" to 10 mesh in diameter.Dryer performance data is shown in Table 1. Capital costs between the two types of dryers are comparable with the Roto-Louvre producing generally a larger better-formed pellet. Dryer feeds differ in that at both Hardy and Fecunis, Ni-Cu concentrate filter cake is the only feed while at the Falconbridge slurry plant the dryer feed can consist of up to 10% by weight of smelter flue dust resulting in a combined concentrate-dust pellet for feeding to the Sinter Plant. To the Falconbridge Sinter Plant dryer, dust and limestone are added for the smelting process in addition to Ni-Cu concentrate."

The author points out that corrosion works 24 hours a day, every day. It is an economic reality that the cost of corrosion is inevitable and that its cost should be incurred in the least expensive way. An economic evaluation technique to properly assess its relative impact is the Discounted Cash Flow Method. Various remedial and corrosion control measures are available and these, when coupled with a planned corrosion control program, help reduce the cost of corrosion.

THE gold mining industry, in Canada as in other countries, has passed through trying times in the past year. The strains and stresses of war have drawn away much of its man-power, both from the labour and the management. The urgent needs of the war machine have greatly curtailed the amounts of steel and explosives that can be allotted to the mines; and the loss, by enemy action, of supplies of such essential things as rubber, bids fair to reduce operations still further, if not cripple them entirely in time. And, as if these difficulties were not enough, war on the psychological front has been declared on the gold mines. Earnest supporters of the war effort, well-meaning theorists, and perhaps others whose intent is less disinterested, have all combined to clamour against the continuance of gold mining. We have been asked, what is the use of taking gold out of one hole in Canada to put it into another in Kentucky. We have been assured that gold will never again have any value, except for filling teeth. We have been repeatedly adjured to look at Germany, how well it has got along without gold. We have been told that it is unthinkable, when this nation is girding her loins for war, that labour and materials should be diverted to this useless effort. Gold miners should be diverted to the base-metal mines, where they can produce something of real value to the war effort; or to war factories; or, in fact, almost anywhere, so long as they are got out of the gold mines. And, what has made the situation even more disturbing, it has seemed as if all this clamour might be convincing governments. In fact, as you all know, the government of the United States did actually take the step of ordering its gold mines to cease operations. Fortunately, however, for Canada, the facts that no large favourable effects resulted from that action, and that, in Canada, gold mining is a much larger part of the national economy than in the United States, have caused our government, so far at least, to avoid this drastic step. In talking about this, however, let me emphasize that I have no more inside information on the subject than any of you. Like Will Rogers, all I know is what I see in the papers.
