The Bong Mieu Project lies within the Pre-Palaeozoic Kontum Craton near the southern margin of the regional Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture. The Suture and accompanying Truongson Fold Belt of Indosinian age host significant gold and base-metal bearing districts including OlympusÆ other project at Phuoc Son to the west of Bong Mieu and OxianaÆs Sepon project in Laos. The Bong Mieu Project is located some 90 km south of Da Nang and some 30 km south-west of Tam Ky, the provincial capital of Quang Nam province in central Vietnam. The project area is covered by an Investment Licence of some 30 km2 which was granted in 1991 and a mining permit of some 365 ha granted in 1992. Several mesothermal, gold-silver deposits with assigned resources are present on the property. Deposits with assigned resources contain some 615 000 ounces of gold in situ. These are at Ho Gan and Ho Ray which are potentially exploitable by open-pit mining and Nui Kem which is potentially exploitable by underground mining. Newly discovered extensions to the known deposits at Ho Gan, Ho Ray and Nui Kem, and several other new prospects, are currently being investigated by drilling. The Ho Gan mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein, as well as intrusive breccia hosted style. Nui Kem mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein style. The Ho Ray mineralisation is of skarn (gold-bismuth-tungsten) and lesser quartz vein style. The deposits straddle and flank the east-west trending Bong Mieu Anticline which trends through the central portion of the Investment Licence. In this paper the geology of the deposits, details of resources, results of recent exploration on the Investment Licence and recent engineering and mining studies at Ho Gan are briefly reviewed.

My roots span four generations. My great grandfather, Christian Frederick Fisher, along with twenty-one others was drowned in the New Australasian mine disaster at Creswick in Victoria in 1882. My grandfather, also named Christian Frederick Fisher, escaped and then followed a career of shaft sinking for large companies and operating small mines (very unprofitably according to my father) when funds allowed. My father, an excellent practical mining and mechanical engineer, was also a small miner and my early entry into the industry was, like many before me, very basic. My introductions to the business end of a No. 4 shovel, drilling with hand steel and later with jack hammers without the benefit of airlegs, feeding heavy cordwood to hungry boilers and felling trees for mine timber soon dispelled any illusions I had that mining was a bed of roses.Before it became well known I knew "Life was not meant to be easy".In a family-owned small gold mine in a remote part of Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland I was fortunate in obtaining an excellent grounding in reef and deep alluvial mining. Operating in vertical and underlie shafts the variable ground conditions often required close timbering. Steam pumps were used underground and steam winders for hoisting.The complete absence of municipal or government infrastructure in this remote mining field threw responsibility on each mine operator to be self-sufficient, and responsible for mine development and installation of crushing and milling equipment, accommodation and water supply. Conditions, although harsh, were acceptable in the 1930s, and fostered great self-reliance.The first crushing from our Black Cat Mine in 1935 returned nearly 200 oz from 10 tons of ore. Gold was then worth $13 an ounce compared to about $400 an ounce today; but in those depression years of the 1930s our operation was profitable.This basic education not only returned dividends when confronted with difficult mining problems, but created a deep respect for the miners who develop the small mines and who continue to contribute to the industry today, often under difficult conditions.Australia and mining are synonymous. The industry has been immortalised by the famous historian, Professor Geoffrey Blainey, in his book "The Rush that Never Ended".Initial gold discoveries were concealed and exploration was frowned upon by authority as being disruptive to early rural development. But with the discovery of gold in the Bathurst area of New South Wales by Hargreaves in 1851, the rush to the gold fields began followed by an influx of migrants. The traumatic effect on industry and society that followed, created the pattern of the love-hate relationship that at times became temporarily submerged, but is so evident today.In the harsh economic climate of the 19th century with low wages and no welfare, the opportunity to wrest riches from the earth was literally "rushed" by the adventurous, the poor, the rich, people from all walks of life. Pressures developed on preFederation Governments to provide law, order and infrastructure to the rushes that have never ended.

The iron ore industry in Australia has, in recent years, experienced an unprecedented growth phase. But now that major expansions are moving into the operation phase, new challenges have emerged. Whereas initial planning may involve a few modelling studies, ongoing performance monitoring and improvement requires a different, more intense approach. This is especially important in the face of changing factors such as commodity prices, exchange rates and labour markets. Response time is key. As a mining operation proceeds from initial planning to daily operations, the time window for analysis shortens, going from months to weeks to days as the business matures.Simulation models and analysis tools are typically built and run by specialists in the planning phase, but then what? The investment has been made, but realised only once. What if further analysis could be carried out in-house, re-using existing models using up-to-the-minute data? Can we create virtual mines that run in parallel to live operations that allow computers to identify areas of a value creation or operational improvement? These questions can be answered by the innovative application of big data, simulation and predictive analytics. The future will be having this all integrated into one platform that offers, for the first time, an opportunity for non-experts to apply existing modelling and analysis assets – combined with live data – to deliver support for continuous improvement, and the ability to respond quickly to external changes in the best possible way, before they become big problems. These techniques will represent a step change in the ability for operations to maximise efficiency and will underpin the intelligent operations of the future. The safety culture in mining has progressed towards a zero tolerance of injury. This change has required that some historically inherent risks of mining are engineered out or reduced. One of the significant causes of fatality in Western Australia and Worldwide mining is through rock fall, subsidence and inrush. Efforts put into understanding the material properties of the ground we mine and the backfill we place are reflected in improved safety statistics. It is no longer acceptable to not manage these risks and mining, to be sustainable, has to be safe.   Mining historically produced waste products with little consideration of recycling or impact on the surrounding land. The rehabilitation of mining waste products such as mill tailings, heap leach and waste rock is one step towards managing the environmental impact of these waste products. A better step is towards recycling and redepositing these products to produce a more environmentally sustainable mine site.   Gold fields St Ives lease is an active network of new and historic undergrounds and open pits within the Lake Lefroy and Kambalda district. The process of creating voids underground followed by open pits mining through the old voids allows the use of backfilling to control inherent hazards and dilution. Backfill provides opportunity for the disposal and recycling of mining waste materials at the same time as meeting requirements of mine support. Materials available on the St Ives site include spent heap leach, reclaimed tailings and waste mullock. Through recycling and re-depositing these materials to St Ives and neighbouring mines, the reliance on imported material to meet their needs and impact on surrounding land is reduced.   At St Ives, paste fill and barricade design have been reworked to allow backfilling into stopes with water inflows up to six litres per second. This has required a rethink of the drainage and monitoring of water management systems previously used for hydraulic fill and apply them to paste.   The St Ives open pits have developed methods to mine through underground workings and individual stope voids up to 62,000m3. Here backfill is used to reduce the consequence of catastrophic, unexpected failure of the crown and minimise ore lost down voids and dilution through increased blast movement. This paper outlines the less common methods being adopted to use the recycled materials and ways it has been managed to suit the needs of the company.

Active EM subsurface imaging is a proprietary technique developed by Marschall Acoustics Instruments Pty Limited (MAI) to image subsurface features at depths useful for the mining industry. Similar in field operations to high resolution seismic surveying, the Active EM technique employs electromagnetic energy rather than elastic wave energy. Received backscattered energy in the Active EM technique is thus due to differences and contrasts in electromagnetic permeability and permittivity in the subsurface, analogous to LamTÆs constants in elastic wave imaging. Carrying the analogy to seismic imaging even further, the Active EM method employs high power transmissions of very wide-band coded signals of a controlled polarisation. Likewise, the array pattern and polarisation of the receiving transducers is also tightly controlled. Thus, in a certain mathematical sense, Active EM is the electromagnetic equivalent of high power high resolution vibroseis seismic surveying. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. This paper examines the application of Lean Manufacturing in a mining environment, based on experience within the Rio Tinto entities: Rio Tinto Aluminium, Northparkes Mines and Hunter Valley Operations. The three applications have tested the flexibility of the Lean methodology. Within Rio Tinto, Rio Tinto Aluminium was the first group to introduce Lean. The rollout began in late 2004. It was introduced firstly at Boyne Smelters, Gladstone, as a model site with the initial application in the Carbon Bake Furnace area. It was later extended to other sites including the Weipa Bauxite Mine. LeanÆs successful application within Rio Tinto Aluminium was in part responsible for its recent adoption by other Australian-based Rio Tinto business units including Northparkes Mines, a copper mining operation in Central New South Wales, and Hunter Valley Operations, a group of four coal mines in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales. Lean is also being adopted by Rio Tinto Iron Ore. Rio Tinto Aluminium introduced Lean Manufacturing to complement an existing Six Sigma business improvement program and to achieve continuous improvement activities at a workplace level. Lean provides a similar level of rigour and discipline to Six Sigma but its application is everyday and for everyone, everywhere in the workplace. It is a valuable management tool. In a short time, Lean has achieved good and sometimes spectacular results improving productivity and efficiency at all sites, including our mining site. Within Rio Tinto Aluminium, it has also had beneficial impacts on our ability to develop and retain employees.

However, where silica dust of less than 10 micron sizing is present, they Cannot be recommended. Generally, they are more acceptable to the men than the heavier but more efficient types of industrial respirator.The best avenues of approach to training appear to be:(a) Liberal use of vi~ual aids (posters, photos, slides, etc.)(b) Efficient interpreter service.(c) Constant follow-up and check by foreman and fellow workmen.Mr. W.Marsden (B.H.P. Many mines have an interest in improving fragmentation at their sublevel caving operations in order to produce better ore recovery, lower dilution and less overbreak. The primary requirement for the extraction phase is to understand and optimise the flow of the fragmented rock in the rings including interactions with the caved material. Rock fragment formation is critically controlled by the blasting phase and can potentially be improved by optimising the dynamic energy distribution throughout the ring through the crafting of explosive charging, priming position and initiation timing. The modelling of fragmentation and damage due to explosive loading of complete rings is inherently and irrevocably a three dimensional problem that is difficult to address. We have therefore initially utilised an analytical code to predict vector peak particle velocities and energies that are restricted to the plane of a ring. Dynamic energy distributions based on common timing and priming practice have been compared with other possibilities using conventional pyrotechnic detonators as well as initiation designs based on accurate electronic detonators. The energy distribution can be quite subtly tailored to increase energy in appropriate regions or to decrease energy in the brow region for example to potentially reduce instability and the probability of misfires. We have also recently developed the capability to efficiently model particle flow using four-sided polygonal elements. Despite the 2D limitations of such a model this results in more realistic fragment interaction and stacking than can be achieved using conventional rigid circular elements. Modelling of a typical sublevel caving ring utilising these elements activated by the correct dynamics offers considerable potential for understanding the influence of the blasting energetics and timing on the complex flow and extraction process.

"Brazil is the sixth worldwide producer of aluminum and Votorantim (Metals) has been operating three bauxite open pit mines in a particular way of working. In those the deposits occur on the top of hills, under forest, coffee, eucalyptus plantation or pasture area.The deposits are not large and normally mining takes an average of two months to be completed before starting the rehabilitation process, which demands a good strategy in mining planning to achieve the production goals.The benefit function developed to select feasible areas uses, beyond production costs, fees from the owner by using their area and rehabilitation cost. Both are based on land use and occupation field survey data. In this process each area with different land use receives a specific rehabilitation cost as input into a block model.Once the selection is made the mining schedule begins, taking into consideration the following premise: the orebody needs to be mined in a short period of time because during this time, the surface owners receive from Votorantim a compensation based on the expected profits from their plantation or pasture, plus royalties related to the ore amount existing in their area.Not all operations have waste dumps. Waste is pushed down by bulldozers to the lower part of the ore border. After loading and transporting ore, the waste is handled back to the mined area to fit the topography. Traditional coal mining planning seldom considers key æsustainability factorsÆ such as: societal impacts in the area; jobs (both created and lost); dislocation of towns and residences; impact on neighbouring communities and individuals; infrastructure concerns; post-mining land use (except when limited by law or other factors); habitat disruption and reconstruction; long-term economic impacts in the community; and net long-term community benefit. This paper presents a systems engineering approach based on the premise that systems can only be optimised if all factors are considered at one time. In theory, coal mine designs can be optimised for return on investment, environmental protection and sustainability. Using this approach, the permitting process may be quicker and less costly, relationships with neighbours, communities, environmental groups may be improved, the mining industry may be seen as a positive for the short-term and long-term and the mining industry may increase profits. This paper discusses geographic information system (GIS) tools that may be used to incorporate ecological and other sustainable development concerns into models of coal mine sustainability performance. Along with coal production cost and value information obtained from past and present coal mining operations, GIS data are used to develop mathematical cost and equation models. By analysis of on-the-ground data, the parameters to be included in these models are identified, the relationships between these parameters quantified and the models developed. The paper also discusses the next phases of the work to be completed once the data is obtained and the models are adjusted and validated. At that time, site-specific information will be input into the models and the approach to mining a particular property evaluated and optimised for financial rate-of-return and other desired outcomes, such as preservation or enhancement of sustainability values. Finally, the paper will examine how this approach can be combined with traditional mining engineering considerations in order to develop an optimised mine plan for a specific mining property.

Physical model testing at Bergbauforschung is done in two rigs, a roadway rig and a longwall rig. The loading of such models, in scale relation to the con- ditions in the collieries provides valuable guidance to the probability and nature of failures, and thus to support requirements, in structural, roofbolts and self- auvancing supports. The success of such modelling when related to subsequent underground designs put to use suggests that such methods of investigation could be extended to pillar extraction problems also.

The ever increasing demand for metals and minerals is putting significant pressure on current mining companies to find more ore. As these companies explore and mine, the future appears to be to go deeper and deeper underground. With depth, however, comes ever increasing costs as infrastructure such as hoisting, ventilation, the movement of workers and materials increase in size and scope. Further, the actual rock mass becomes prone to destruction through rock bursts and the heat generated becomes a major issue resulting in extreme expenditures in cooling plants and some of the biggest air movers in the world. All these issues result in dramatic changes in both capital and operating costs, subsequently making cut-off grades rise. As this trend continues there is an economic limit to how deep one can go, resulting therefore in a severe shortage of accessible ore deposits to mine. This paper discusses the need for larger marine robotics technology and presents the state-of-the-art in current research in underwater tele-autonomy, specifically the development of high bandwidth optical communication networks critical to any future activities (mining, construction, etc) underwater. DURING the four years, 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925, China produced the following quantities of non-ferrous metals and ores: Antimony Products - 67,869 (long) tons. The production for 1925 was 20,869 tons, of which 80% was regulus, 14% crude,and 6% oxide.Arsenic (White) - 4200 tons. The production for 1925 was 1200 tons, but only 90 tons were exported, some 25% of which to Hong-Kong, France, and U.S.A. each, and the rest in small lots to other countries. Domestic consumption was 1110 tons, and thelocal price for "cake" was around £47 per ton on 1925 exchange.Arsenic Ore (Realgar) - 1400 tons.Lead Ore (Galena) - 44,853 tons. The production for 1925 was 10,853 tons, of which 16%, produced in Korea, went to Japan, and 84% produced in Hunan, went to Europe.Manganese Ore (Pyrolusite) - 142,567 tons. The production for 1925 was 42,567 tons, of which 94.3% went to Japan.Tin Ingot - 33,480 tons. In 1925 the exports to Hong-Kong were 8880 tons of usual rough tin of 94% to 96%. Most of this was refined to No. I Chinese quality of 99.3% and exported to U.S.A. and Europe, owing to the good price ruling.Sulphur - 12,000 tons. Sulphur is included in this list in order to explain how its production led to the discovery of some other ores.Wolfram - 19,668 tons. The production in 1925 was 5868 tons, most of which came from the Quee Mee mountain district in South Kiangsi, from the detrital deposits. Civil disturbances prevented the usual output from Hunan border.Zinc Ore (Blende) - 134,190 tons. Exports for 1925 were 34,190 tons of low-grade ore, averaging 30% zinc, 14% lead, and 7% silver...

Broken Hill South Limited's discovery of phosphate deposits in the northwest of Queensland in 1966 prompted intensive exploration which has proved phosphate rock in excess of 2,000 million tons at ten separate deposits. Systematic exploration for phosphate in Australia was initiated by the Company in 1964. Early in 1966, an investigation of oil wells in the Georgina Basin in the Northern Territory and Queensland revealed widespread anomalous phosphate in early Middle Cambrian Beetle Creek Formation and Thorntonia Lime- stone. Phosphorites recognised in oil wells in the southeastern part of the Basin, Queensland, led to the discovery of the Duchess deposits, Exploration of the Beetle Creek Formation since 1966 has disclosed nine other sizeable deposits north of Duchess around the eastern margin of the Basin. The Lady Annie and the adjoining Lady Jane deposits, by reason of their location, 160 miles south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, are expected to be the first to be brought into production. Beneficiation testing and engineering investigations commenced in 1967. Transport between the deposits and various port sites in the Gulf of Carpentaria has been extensively studied and a slurry pipeline as a means of transport to a deep water island port, is now being investigated.

Correct sampling practices are of vital importance to the mining industry; key decisions for the business are made on the basis of samples in all the value chain. Geology plays a relevant role in pre- and post-investment stages. Actually the understanding of natural variability is essential for geological modelling, geometallurgical modelling, mine planning, grade and process control. Improper sampling practices obstruct this objective introducing irrelevant variability components, which can cause monumental economic losses. A good approach to accomplish this understanding is the application of heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests, which are useful tools to quantify the variability of a certain well-delimited geological unit at different comminution scales. The application of heterogeneity test can help minimise Pierre GyÆs fundamental sampling error and to study the impact of other sampling errors. IngamellÆs test allows us to define the correct mass of sample for chemical analysis. This paper presents the results of several heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests done in Chilean porphyry copper deposits that belong to CODELCO Chile (Chuquicamata, Mina Sur, Radomiro Tomic, El Salvador, Andina and Teniente), in different geological units (endogenous oxides, exotic oxides, supergene sulfides and hypogene sulfides) and for several elements (Cut, Cus, Mo and As). These tests, considering the natural variability, have helped us develop accurate sampling protocols to minimise the fundamental error to acceptable levels. A major contribution of these tests (more than 30) is the generation of secure sampling protocols using the highest sampling constant obtained in the tests, for new porphyry copper deposits that donÆt have information given by heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests.

Traditional method of explicitly defining three-dimensional (3D) ore-waste and geological boundaries relies heavily on a time-consuming process of manual digitisation. This method of modelling can be best described as surface modelling, as complex surface geometry is built up by digitising points that lie on the surface. With the advent of fast 3D interpolation methods, however, construction of geological surfaces using volume functions is now a practical alternative to explicit modelling of surfaces. Unlike explicit modelling, surfaces contained in volume functions are not explicitly defined or digitised. Instead the existence of surfaces in the volume function is implicit, thus the process of modelling surfaces from volume function is called æimplicit modellingÆ. Based on recent advances in fast scattered data interpolation methods, implicit modelling first defines a continuous three-dimensional function that describes the grade or rock distribution. This volumetric function is interrogated for a grade value, or a geological surface, thus allowing the extraction of the 3D object to be automated and eliminating the need to manually digitise surfaces. Since the function is continuous throughout space and does not depend on a mesh or grid for its definition, the extracted geological or grade wireframes can be constructed at any desired resolution in the specific volume of interest. The volume modelling method can work on scattered drillhole data of any data density, including processing combined information from dense grade control data as well as sparse resource drilling. It offers distinct advantages over surface modelling, including: being able to wireframe geological objects that may take days to digitise in tens of minutes; substantial improvement in modelling accuracy; and the ability to generate conditional models rapidly allowing mining risks inherent in geological modelling to be examined.

The theoretical and experimental studies have been done to clarify the hearth flow of iron and slag. The results of dissections show that the hearth can be treated as a packed bed of coke hav- ing good permeability with a coke-free layer at the bottom of the hearth. 3-dimensional numerical calculations of hearth flow with and without a coke-free layer are carried out, and the results are assured by a water model simulation. The influences of a coke-free layer on the iron flow and the discharge route of iron and slag are examined. The 3-dimensional flow pattern can be represented simply by the travelling time, which depends on characteristically the profile of coke-free layer and the quantity of iron in the hearth. Those flow parameters could be obtained by the results of radioisotope tracer test ( Co for iron flow, and Sc for slag flow) at several furnaces. As a result, it is found that the coke-free layer repeats the cycle of appearance and disappearance at several-month intervals. This cycle corres- ponds to large temperature fluctuation at the bottom of hearth. The relation between iron flow and skull (solidified iron, coke and deposited graphite mixed layer) on the hearth brick was studied by the model experiment and the thermal analysis based on the indications of thermocouples installed in the bottom of the hearth. If a thin coke-free layer is formed on the skull, a fast iron flow is generated in the layer, and melts away the skull. The growth and melting of skull produces the fluctuation of thermal load on a bottom brick, causing brick Damage.

The Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) is undertaking a large research project involving partners from industry, universities and government, which aims to develop the necessary chemical and structural understanding of geopolymer materials made from waste products for them to be used to capture a significant market share of the concrete business for a given industrial region. We are investigating the suitability of a range of soluble silica-bearing waste streams for use as geopolymer concrete feedstocks. In order to utilise a variety of waste streams, either singly or blended, an understanding of the role of secondary metal ions (Fe, Ca, Mg, Ti, etc) in the geopolymerisation process is essential. A range of experimental and analytical techniques is therefore being used to better understand the structure-chemistry-property relationships of geopolymers. Currently, we are investigating geopolymers made from a variety of waste streams (fly ash, kaolinite, red mud, etc) available in the Kwinana Industrial Region, Western Australia. This paper will detail how the basic scientific research underpinning the project is vital if waste streams of varying composition are to be successfully used in a commercial concrete product and the regional synergies required to develop geopolymers from waste streams.
