Burra was the largest metalliferous mine in Aus- tralia between 1845 and 1860 and employed as many as 1000 men and boys. The workforce was predominantly Cornish, Burra being the first con- centration of Cornish folk in Australia. The sur- face and underground mining operations were typically Cornish and virtually all positions of responsibility were held by Cornishmen. Beam pumping and winding engines were imported from Cornwall and housed in traditional Cornish engi- nehouses. Burra had the first significant number of beam engines in Australia: six were installed between 1849 and 1861. These engines, ranging in size from 20 inches to 80 inches in diameter, were used for pumping, hauling, and driving Cornish roll crush- ers and dressing machinery. Derelict enginehouses of the great beam engines are a striking reminder of former mining activity in Cornwall and South Australia. In South Aus- tralia about 35 enginehouses were erected between 1848 and 1887, of which eight still remain, three of them at Burra (Figure 1). These remain as a tangible link with the Industrial Revolution.

IonicRE acknowledges within our mining industry, there is a common belief that workplace health and safety, often referred to as safety, is just a matter of ‘common sense’ – something obvious and easy. However, at IonicRE, we hold a different perspective. We understand that safety is far from easy. We recognise the need to emphasise the importance of understanding and conveying the inherent difficulties of working safely. We are committed to implementing processes that support individuals in achieving our safety objective of eliminating fatalities and permanently disabling injuries. To build resilience and sustainability into safety performance, we draw parallels with the principles underpinning sustainable and exceptional production performance. Achieving sustainable safety performance demands effective leadership, meticulous planning, adept management, genuine care and unwavering commitment. We’ve leveraged various tools and techniques, such as DISC theory, Maslow’s hierarchy, process control, Kaizen, Six Sigma and Kirkpatrick’s 4 levels, among others, to facilitate this improvement. There methods play a pivotal role in developing a Safety Blueprint for enhanced safety performance. This paper provides an overview of IonicRE’s Safety Blueprint, a strategic framework for developing our safety capability. Our capability is underpinned by three key pillars. Firstly, a comprehensive risk management approach is imperative, encompassing the understanding of hazards, the identification of threats to our people and the associated risks. Secondly, it entails providing and enforcing accountability to sustain our safety capability. Lastly, it involves constructing an effective defence system against threats and harm. Implementing these pillars requires a meticulously devised change process. Anticipating resistance and potential setbacks, we underscore the importance of having the right people and a wellcommunicated vision for safety at IonicRE. A Safety Blueprint serves as a detailed plan outlining the path toward a future goal. At IonicRE, we contend that safety in the mining industry has generally lacked a coherent and effective Safety Blueprint – a comprehensive plan to navigate the journey toward a destination. Drawing parallels with NASA’s detailed plan for landing a man on the moon safely, we question why, as an industry, we cannot similarly eliminate fatalities. While progress has been made in the last century, we must not wait another 50 years to eradicate fatalities from our industry. Examining Safe Work Australia data from 2008 reveals that 47 per cent of mining fatalities result from vehicle activity and 40 per cent stem from individuals being struck by an object. As of December 7, 2023, seven lives have been lost in the mining industry in Australia this year, indicating a stubborn trend mirroring 2022, with limited improvement over the past 25 years. These incidents are not isolated or unexpected. We understand the hazards and controls, yet fatalities persist. IonicRE considers that the mining industry stands at a critical juncture – do we accept a plateau in mining safety performance, or do we rethink our approach? At IonicRE, we are thoroughly reassessing the hazards that threaten our people, systematically redefining effective risk control measures and establishing a robust framework to hold individuals accountable for the effective implementation of the control measure.

Data management is a significant, but perhaps unrecognised, consideration for any organisation embarking on a geometallurgy program. While resource geologists are accustomed to dealing with thousands or millions of samples and their associated assays, metallurgists and mineralogists have traditionally carried out only a few expensive and complicated tests and consequently tend to manage the resultant data in spreadsheets. The emerging discipline of geometallurgy arrives with significant challenges as a result of the sheer volume of data generated. As an example, the Olympic Dam geometallurgy program has generated more than:60 000 physical subsamples analysed for up to 30 analytes; 25 000 spreadsheet-based laboratory test results; 30 000 sized fractions analysed via QXRD, MLA and/or QEMSCAN;multiple external providers of data, and more than seven terabytes of data. Considerations for any geometallurgy data management system include storage space, data integrity, accessibility, traceability (sample provenance), maintenance and ease of use, integration with data providers and the ability to modify the system to adapt to changing requirements. Further, aspects of a geometallurgy program, such as conducting a range of tests on one sample, producing subsamples such as concentrates and tailings, compositing and routine QA/QC may not be well handled by existing software and providers geared to standard geochemistry, mineralogy or metallurgical test programs. The development of a geometallurgy database using existing software (AcQuire), and the associated file management system will be described for a large geometallurgy program at Olympic Dam. As with many aspects of geometallurgy there is no approach that meets the needs of every site or program. Recognition of data management as an issue, a structured approach in the program planning phase and commitment to executing the strategy will increase the chances of successfully mining the geometallurgical data.

The title of this paper suggests rather a comprehensive survey of the industry, but since it is not possible to do justice to this in a short paper, and, as the bulk of the Australian trade consists of buttwelded tube, the author proposes to deal only with this type.The buttweld process has been praetised for many years and, as the methods of manufacture are not widely known, a brief history of its development may be of interest. Few good reference books in the English language are available, and this reticence may possibly have retarded advancement in manufacture.The earliest method of making ferrous tubes consisted of bending a thin plate or strip to form a "skelp." The "skelp" was then raised to a welding heat and hammerwelded on an internal mandrel on a smith's anvil. Necessity, however, soon produced mechanical methods of making tubes, and, in 1812, an Englishman named Osborn patented machinery for "welding and making barrels of fire-arms and other cylindrical articles." The apparatus was arranged as shown in Fig. 1.The skelp was raised to a welding heat and placed in the swage block "A." A mandrel was then inserted and the tube lapwelded by the action of the tilt hammer.Various modifications of this apparatus quickly followed, to keep pace with the rapidly growing demand and the exigencies of war. These tubes were essentially of short length and mainly used for gun barrels. The advent of coal gas for lighting (patented by Murdoch) created a demand for small tubes of longer length, and necessity, as usual, produced a solution. In 1824 Jas. An investigation was carried out at Diavik Diamond Mines Inc (DDMI) to identify and quantify the mechanisms through which ammonium nitrate (AN) was entering the mine discharge water. The goal was to develop and complete an investigation of the potential AN loss mechanisms in order to assess their contribution to ammonia in the mine water system. The initial phase of the project involved the collection and analysis of blasting and water quality data that were used to determine the mechanisms by which the ammonia enters the mine water system and to establish a baseline data set for comparison with results from future trials designed to reduce AN loss. Three potential options for reducing AN loss were identified through the first phase of the project. The second phase of the project involved conducting a series of monitored trials with changes made to the drilling and blasting process. The results of these trials were compared to the baseline data set to determine if the changes introduced for the trials had reduced AN losses while producing satisfactory blast results. This paper describes the process for the collection of the baseline data, provides an analysis of the resulting data, discusses the changes made to blasting operations in order to minimise AN loss and describes the results observed subsequent to these changes.

Unnamed early prospectors panned gold from creeks drain- ing the Great Dividing Range in the early part of 1851. The first publicised discovery was credited to Edward Hargraves near Bathurst in New South Wales later in 1851 and during the ensu- ing gold rush, prospectors rapidly made discoveries elsewhere in New South Wales and later across the border in Victoria. Reference to the attached graphs of gold production indicates that for much of the first 100 years, gold production came from the easily worked and readily discovered shallow alluvial deposits, many of which were located in the creeks draining mountainous regions of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland (Fig. 1 and 2). As these deposits were exhausted, prospectors turned their attention to outcrop lode deposits which led to the development of underground mining techniques and a significant boost in over- all gold production. With the discovery of the rich Golden Mile lodes in Kalgoorlie in 1893, gold production increased signifi- cantly and peaked around the turn of the century. At that time, the enormous potential of the great Witwatersrand deposits in South Africa had only just been appreciated and for a few years, Australia led the world in gold production (1855-1863 and again in 1903). Underground mining continued in the Eastern Goldfields area of Western Australia, the Bendigo-Ballarat region of Victoria and in northeast Queensland. Very few of these operations continued beyond the Second World War, except the larger producers in the Kalgoorlie region where recovered grade had dropped to about 6 g/t Au. By the early 1970s with the gold price fixed at US$35 per ounce, most of the operations were shut down as labour costs escalated, with only the low cost bulk mining operation at Mt. Charlotte and the high grade reefs at Norseman continuing in Production.

"The Mine Haul Road Optimisation Alliance (HROA) is a unique Australian industry–academia collaboration that has been developed to support mine haul road operators. The alliance integrates industry, end-user service providers and academic research expertise in mine haul road design, construction and operation to identify, quantify, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies and solutions required to drive haulage productivity improvements.Initially, a broad overview of the university–industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis internationally. This insight places into context the opportunity that strategic collaborations present, to drive productivity and efficiency in mining, while also delivering innovative technology solutions.Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry collaborations can deliver a more robust and needs-driven solution to mine haul road design, performance and management, especially where integrated solutions are needed. Critically in this approach, implementation and monitoring data provided by industry and service providers alike form the foundation on which to develop research knowledge and innovation that is more responsive to the end-user requirements, typically represented by ‘early goals’ and practical, implementable solutions.The paper concludes with examples of how the alliance collaborations work in practice to deliver focused mine haul road research outcomes, together with the mechanisms used to ensure industry needs are met through end-user driven research solutions for enhanced operational performance.Citation:Handel, D, Miedecke, J, Thompson, R, Tomicek, E and Tulloch, D, 2016. The paper describes developments since 1959 in major excavators to meet the demand for higher outputs of overburden and coal under less favourable batter conditions than used hitherto in the coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley. Particular reference is made to investigations of designs of bucket wheel head configurations for the digging of these flat batters on high faces, and examples are given of the wide use of models inthese studies. An explanation is given of how solution of these problems and surface conditions unfavourable for wheeled transport confirmed selection of the long boom rather than the compact type of bucket wheel excavator for the Latrobe Valley applications.The past decade has seen advances in the manufacture in Australia of components for excavators and similar machines. The history of Australian manufacture of components for major brown coal excavators is traced;and reference is made to study and application of Australian and overseas (mainly German) codes and practices in the design and construction of machines made partly here and partly in Germany.A section of the paper deals with advances in electrical engineering for large excavators in Australia and its interdependence with mechanical design and construction.Finally, as an example of the versatility of the bucket wheel excavator, a description is given of a recent application for the mining of mineral sands in northern N.S.W.

A better understanding of the hydrogeology within mine waste rock and cover systems is essential for the quantification, prediction and prevention of metals loading to the environment surrounding waste rock piles. The effect of surface condition on the internal flow mechanisms within an intermediate-scale constructed waste rock pile is being investigated at the Cluff Lake Mine, Saskatchewan. Changes in the water balance, the outflow distribution and water residence time have been observed in the waste rock pile following successive modifications of the surface condition. The three year old, run of mine, free-dumped surface was ripped to a depth of 30 cm to 40 cm, and levelled in October of 2001. In August 2002, a 10 cm to 15 cm cover of compacted waste rock was placed on the pile. Outflow, precipitation and run-off data collected during natural and artificial rainfall events have been used to quantify the maximum infiltration rate, and the spatial pattern of discharge and cumulative volume of water that infiltrated into the waste rock under each surface condition. Infiltration data together with the outflow data provide a basis to address the residence time of water within waste rock and the dominant flow mechanisms for different surface conditions. With a free dump surface spatially distinct wetting fronts are observed at the base of the pile that vary in flow rate by an order of magnitude (measured at a 2 m by 2 m scale) and in time by up to a week. Following ripping and levelling, similar cumulative outflows were observed, but the magnitude and arrival time of wetting fronts changed across the pile. A decrease in outflow volume, a decrease in infiltration volume, a two-fold increase in the response time of wetting fronts and a more spatially uniform distribution was observed following placement of the compacted surface layer. Based on preliminary data, the internal structure appears to be the dominant factor controlling outflow variability.

The Dampier Port Upgrade Project (DPU) involves an upgrade to Hamersley IronÆs Parker Point iron ore port facility at Dampier, Western Australia. The $US700 million DPU Project will increase Hamersley IronÆs shipping capacity at Dampier from 72 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 116 Mtpa. The DPU Project comprises a new car dumper facility and rail spur, an upgrade to the existing stockyard and conveying system, a new screen-house and a 450 m wharf extension with two new shipping berths and a new ship-loader. This paper discusses the innovative design and construction of the new car dumper facility, which is capable of automatically unloading 240 car iron ore trains at a rate of 10 000 t/h. The facility design is unique compared to more conventional designs currently in operation, and greatly improves operation and maintenance functions.

Mobile mining equipment presents only a small portion (ten per cent mining project costs but the selected technology will determine to a large extent the mining performance and mine profitability. The actual performance of the selected mobile equipment technology will rely on the support functions, infrastructure, user interface and user acceptance. Optimising the technology to match the circumstances is an increasingly important phase in a mine feasibility study. Smartly done feasibility studies include the possible future needs of changing or building-up of the selected technology. In massive mining applications the machinery faces quite different challenges than in selective or small-scale mining applications. In massive mining applications the efficient and continuous move of large amounts of material has led to the use of increasing degree of automation. This higher degree of automation in a mining application, on the other hand, will be best applied to a smooth and streamlined mining process and operation. Mining methods like block caving support automated operation. Automated mobile equipment needs supportive infrastructure, monitoring and information transfer systems as well as well established working procedures. Too often the user interface and human factor is disregarded during the consideration of automation. Through the available supplier programming tools it is possible to see how much the selected technology provides flexibility in changing production or economical situations, when major rebuilds or replacements are necessary, and view the effects of all these on the mine economy. When adequate technology is available from various sources, the difference becomes from preparing for the future, managing costs and combining the best layout with the most suitable technological solutions.

This paper describes the planning mechanism and implementation of a progressive rehabilitation programme at Hunter Valley Mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales. Hunter Valley Mine is a large open cut coal mine which produces approximately 7.0 million tonnes of coal (run of mine) annually for export. This production level involves the movement of some 60 million tonnes of waste and coal each year.The rehabilitation programme at Hunter Valley Mine has been developed to provide a combination of pasture, based on improved pasture species and timber belts to enhance the visual characteristics of the rehabilitated landform, whilst creating amenity in the form of shade for livestock.The operational philosophy for the rehabilitation programme is that of progressive rehabilitation. The best time to undertake rehabilitation is now.' As a result, planning for the rehabilitation programme is continuous, so that all site works are completed in time for vegetation establishment during the critical periods each year.

Mount Isa Mines Limited commissioned the Heavy Medium Plant in August 1982. The first processing stage using Mogensen Sizer 2056 dry screens, experienced unresolvable cloth blinding problems in attempting to separate fine, damp Lead/Zinc ore at 1.7 mm. A large proportion of the fines incorrectly reported to oversize and hence to the wet preparation screens. This wet preparation screen overloading produced multiple operating and maintenance problems. The plant configuration precluded retrofitting any alternative proprietary screen. An internal Mount Isa Mines research and development programme was established to design and build a screen to achieve the required per- formance within the site constraints. The resulting ISA SIZER screen has exceeded metallurgical performance expectations. A `clean sheet' approach to the design also permitted elimination of maintenance difficulties experienced with the Mogensen Sizer. Four `production model' ISA SIZERS were installed in February 1988. The ISA SIZER screen, now fully developed is available commercially and will satisfy many screening plant requirements.

Pike River Coal Limited (PRCL) is developing the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine is being developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km northeast of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners, road-headers and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumped down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.   PRCL faces significant challenges to achieving the goal of cost effective production. The remoteness, high rainfall (greater then 6 metres per year on average), temperature variation and restrictions on access to this subalpine environment have driven the project to develop some distinctive solutions. These include the establishment of survey control in such a difficult environment with vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, significant vegetation and steep slopes by using helicopter survey, aerial photography and LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) aerial survey. PRCL has also commenced designing the placement of the main ventilation fans in an underground chamber in the stone drive.

The Mako domain comprises the Mako lodes at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, Western Australia. This domain was initially bulk or æbucketÆ domained for the open pit resource in 2000, due to complexity in defining the lodes as a result of low drill density. Negative ore tonnage and positive grade and ounce reconciliations were experienced during mining of the domain in the mega-pit, though only small volumes of the domain were mined. Significant amounts of exploration and underground grade control drilling has been completed since the initial bulk domain interpretation and greater geological understanding of the mineralisation controls and geology of the lodes now exists. Mako provides approximately 50 per cent of the ore tonnes and ounces for the North Wall Cut-back, the latest open pit phase of mining at Sunrise Dam. The importance of Mako to mill supply and life-of-mine planning, as well as past reconciliation performance necessitated a reinterpretation of the domain to increase confidence for mining. Historic exploration drilling, underground grade control drilling and detailed pit-wall mapping were used to build mineralised subdomains within the confines of the original domain. These reflect more closely the spatial extents and geological controls on the mineralisation. A new resource model using the multiple indicator kriging (MIK) technique was generated using the new domains. It resulted in a decrease in tonnes and ounces but increase in grade for the sum total of the new domains compared to the old æbucketÆ domain. This is attributed to the increased selectivity and structural constraints imposed by the new domains. A retrospective comparison of the Mako grade control from the mega-pit versus the new resource model was conducted, which æreconciledÆ 103 per cent tonnes, 106 per cent grade and 110 per cent ounces. This has provided confidence that the new model is a better estimate of the lodes. Qualitatively, the new model is a better representation of the geology and extent of the mineralised structures with significant areas of change identifiable. Grade-tonnage plots comparing the 2006 and 2008 models show that most tonnes have been shed from the low-grade û subeconomic grade cut-offs. This is mostly attributable to the volume reduction of æoreÆ in the 2008 model compared to the 2006 model, where the true mineralised zones are captured by the new domains. The reinterpretation and remodelling of Mako is an example of an evolved domain model and shows that mineralised zones need to be differentiated adhering to the geology and geological controls on mineralisation, which are understood largely due to increased drilling density coupled with mapping.

In 1975 the US Bureau of Mines (BOM) under contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), began a systematic mineral resource evaluation of Indian reservations in the United States. The purpose of the BIA/BOM program was to stimulate economic development on Indian lands through exploration and mining ventures with the mining industry. Since that time, 109 phase I reports (literature studies) and nearly 45 phase II and phase III (field studies) reports have been written by the BOM. The various tribes in conjunction with the BIA have access to these reports for decision making regarding mineral resource development.

Investigations of the Mineragraphic Section; Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, have included most of the known stannite-bearing ores in Australia, and have revealed several new occurrences of this relatively uncommon mineral. They provide information about its paragenesis, and its possible effect on tin recovery, that may be of general interest.Several of the investigations used in the preparation of this paper, were made in the first instance by pr. F. L. Stillwell or in collaboration with him.CASSITERITE-SULPHIDE ORES IN NORTH-WEST- TASMANIA Stannite is a minor component of most of the cassiterite sulphide ores of north-western Tasmania. These include the orebodies of Mount Bischoff, the Cleveland mine, Moina, the Stanley River district, Renison Bell, and the Heemskirk-Zeehan district, and form a well defined metallogenetic provence which is related to the Devonian granites of this part of Tasmania.In these ores mineralisation began. with deposition of cassiterite, a little wolfram, and quartz, topaz and tourmaline. With falling temperature, deposition of cassiterite ceased and arsenopy-rite, pyrite, and especially pyrrhotite, formed in abundance, tending to give massive sulphide ore. A little chalcopyrite; stannite, sphalerite and native bismuth accompanied the pyrrhotite. Deposition of quartz ceased after the pyrrhotite, was formed, and the later-formed nonsulphide gangue consists chiefly of carbonates and fluorite. With, the advent of the carbonates the pyrrhotite was altered to fine-gained intergrowths of marcasite and pyrite. Excess iron from the pyrrhotite entered the intergrown carbonate, or was precipitated as magnetite. Some solution of the cassiterite occurred at this stage, the tin being redeposited chiefly as stimnite replacement rims around the residual cassitellrite grains. QNI Pty Ltd operates the Yabulu Refinery located 25 kilometres north of Townsville, North Queensland. The plant treats nickel laterite ores sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia. The cobalt head grade and overall recovery expectations for the 2001/2002 financial year are 0.161 per cent and 53.8 per cent respectively. Cobalt is a valuable byproduct derived from the nickel refining operation which utilises the Caron Process. Any increases in cobalt recovery that are achieved from the existing relatively low level provide significant improvements to the bottom line of the operation. Towards the end of 2000, a project was undertaken to characterise cobalt losses with the sole purpose of improving cobalt recoveries using a variety of analysis techniques. The Time-of- Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS û University of South Australia) method was used to verify the presence of surface bearing cobalt species, originating from either co-precipitation or adsorption mechanisms. Cross-section examinations were also performed using Scanning Electron Micrscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDXS). These techniques indicated the presence of high cobalt concentrations (in the order of several per cent) within a select number of roasted and leached ore particles. The phenomenon of cobalt losses due to incomplete leaching within specific ore particles was not widely documented within the Refinery prior to these studies. In order to quantify losses via this mechanism, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA û JKTech Centre) was also performed on key samples. This paper serves to document a systematic approach in determining the source of significant valuable mineral losses in an established, operating plant. It discusses the use of a variety of analytical techniques, which have been adapted for the minerals processing industry, but are strongly relevant for plant investigations in the hydrometallurgical industry.

The exposed high face of Kerr's Quarry has dominated the township of Ferntree Gully for half a century. The near perpendicular face of bare dacite rock is a crumbling scar in an area of significant natural beauty. Apart from being unsightly, the face is a hazard for any person who approaches too close to its base or to the top edge. The height and the precipitous nature of this man made wall of rock is hazardous indeed. (fig. 1) The rock face is on the municipal boundary between the Shire of Sherbrooke and the City of Knox. This boundary was drawn when partition of the Shire of Ferntree Gully took place. There are many advantages in benching back the wall of the quarry but to do so the operation, located in Knox would need to extend into Sherbrooke. There are planning difficulties involved in such a manoeuvre, but during 1972, at a meeting of Cabinet Ministers, it was agreed that the matter be resolved.
